I was gonna do a pretty funny story today, but I decided it needed background information first so we're doing that today. Funny dum-dums tomorrow.
ONWARD!
For those familiar with JttW, you may have heard of the Dragon Kings of the 4 Seas, Ao Guang of the East, Ao Run of the West, Ao Qin of the South, and Ao Shun of the North. Or rather, you're probably familiar with Ao Guang because he's the only one that ever does anything significant to the plot and are vaguely aware the other 3 exist. Ao Run (otherwise known as Ao Jun or Ao Ji) also has a semi-decent chance of getting recognized because his sons are Ao Lie, the dragon horse that Tripitaka rides that's so committed to his role play as a noble steed he only ever does anything cool once, and Ao Moang, the dragon prince who helps the gang out one time when his asshole cousin beats up a river god and kidnaps Tripitaka for the third time that week. Other than that, they're kinda just... there.
Anyways, if you know about them and read my post yesterday about the dragon princess, you may be wondering which of the 4 dragon kings is her father and the answer is.... none of them! You see, there's another, more biggerer dragon king that's the boss of all of them! I can't really find a name for him other than Long Wang (lit. Dragon King) but he seems to be in charge of the other 4 and was the one that put them in charge of their respective seas to begin with. I like to interpret this as him being their father and the biggest baddest dragon king, which would make the dragon princess from yesterday their sister and Chiantang their uncle. I think that works out pretty well, don't you?
Other than that there's Ao Bing, Ao Gguang's third son, whose claim to fame is getting killed by Nezha that one time because his dad couldn't leave well enough alone, and Ao Lie and Moang's sister Xihai Longnu who's apprenticed to Kuan Yin, and their brother Ao Cinxin, who I couldn't find anything interesting to say about.
And that's the whole Dragon Clan! (Mostly) Do with them what you will!

Ao Lie
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
referencing posts like; baby Ao Lie meeting the bimawen, and Ao Lie wants to be a godfather.
I thought it would be pretty adorable if part of the reason Ao Lie is able to act a horse so well was because they were like his favorite animal as a little hatchling and while it was considered kinda weird among dragons ("Not even a seahorse? Just a... land horse???") it was fully embraced by a certain celestial stablemaster - Bimawen Sun Wukong.
Ao Lie would run off and "to be a ""play horsey" whenever he wandered away from his dad or brothers when they went to the Jade Palace for summits or banquets. He was too small to actually transform himself into a horse, but he'd turn into his noodley-snake dragon form and slink away into the stables.
Wukong likely came across the white baby dragon as he was riling up the curious horses (they all saw Ao Lie as a snake), and was like;
Wukong: "Damn, how did a baby dragon get in here? Ok little guy best get you back-" Ao Lie, hissing: "No!!! I'm horsey! I stay in stable!" Wukong, trying not to laugh: "Ok? I guess I was wrong. You're clearly a skinny white foal. My apologies." Ao Lie: :3
Even if Ao Lie doesn't remember the encounters that well, it did leave him with a positive opinion of horses, stablehands, and monkeys for some reason.
When the dragon is a teenager by the time of the Journey, all he knows about Sun Wukong is that 1: His dad and uncles don't like him, 2: He steals stuff, and 3: He's in jail. His brain doesn't make the mental connection until much later when Zhu Bajie calls Wukong a "useless bimawen!" during the Gold and Silver demons arc.
When Ao Lie first met Wukong in the stone egg au, he basically had the mental journey of; "Huh. The monkey king is kinda chubby- OMG its an egg!! Why is he walking?! Get off my back Tang monk! Don't you know mothers need plenty of rest?!"
After meeting the steed for the first time Tripitaka wonders why the "Bai Longma" is super insistent on letting Wukong ride him specifically. Remembering that the Monkey is "carrying a stone egg" (Tripitaka only knows that part and thinks its a metaphor), the monk in turn tells Wukong that he should ride instead.
Wukong, tired but still wanting to stretch his legs after 500 years under the mountain is like; "Huh? No way! I'm fine! You ride him."
After a while of Tripitaka insisting that the Monkey rides instead of him, Ao Lie gets annoyed and just sits down, causing the monk on his back to slide off into the mud. Holy cassock now muddy. Wukong gets the message but insists he'll only ride until the next village/when they get a second divine-given horse.
Tumblr media
Zhu Bajie tries to ride Bai Longma *once* and he gets bucked off so hard he gets tossed into a lake. He swears the horse has it out for him.
I hc that this was around the time Ao Lie's older sister was having a baby, and he was really bummed out that he wouldn't be able to attend to his uncle-duties cus of his "community service" [ie. the Journey]. So he redirected some of that excitement onto Wukong, who was carrying the Stone Egg. Eggs are a huge cause for celebration among dragonkind either way since they only produce a few in their long livespan.
Wukong was a little surprised/confused by Ao Lie's doting behavior at first, but started to understand why the dragon-horse was acting that way when he spoke to Ao Moang later on during the Tuolong incident.
Prince Moang: "I must pass on congratulations. It's not common among either of our kind to behold future kin." Wukong: "Oh really? When's the last time you've seen a dragon egg?" Prince Moang: "Last year actually! Our sister Zhūlong's egg hatched around the time of your release." Wukong: "Oh. that explains why Ao Lie spoils me." Prince Moang, excitedly: "My little brother is here!? I have to tell him everything! I have woodblock paintings of the baby!" Ao Lie, running over still in horse-mode: "Show me! Show me!" Zhu Bajie, watching: "Weirdos. Its just babies. Everyone's having 'em."
And Ao Lie continues to be super doting and attentive to Wukong as the Journey continues, though he does ask after a few years when the Egg is supposed to be laid. Wukong doesn't have a clear answer for him.
After a while, Wukong says almost in jest; "With how well you've been tending to me and the Egg, I might as well make you their godfather!"
Ao Lie just *shrieks* with joy!! Yes yes yes! He would be so honoured!
Wukong doesn't even have time to explain it was a joke when the dragon hugs him, heavy tears falling on his fur.
Ao Lie: "I'm sorry. It's just that... no one at home has really trusted me with anything so important before. I know that you might... get really hurt when your Egg finally arrives and I am so glad that you trust me to care for them if you have to leave us."
Wukong realises in that moment... Ao Lie knows about Stone Eggs. He eavesdropped on a conversation held between Wukong and the Bodhisattva Guanyin early on, and silently held onto that knowledge until Wukong was comfortable sharing it with the others.
The Monkey King decides in that moment that he doesn't want to trust anyone other than the dragon prince to care for his future child. He's already proven his kind nature - and if the future Stone Monkey were to truly be born an orphan, Ao Lie would gladly help to raise them in secret away from the prying eyes of Heaven.
Unfortunately the Samadhi Fire made it so that Ao Lie would be unable to fufill this duty either...

The white horse dragon family…
From the youngest to the oldest: Ao Lie, Ao Cinxin, and Ao Moang! I could explain their personality later when i’m finished with Moang and Cinxin’s designs, as well as their dynamic as siblings!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, Nezha concept designs! This one’s unrelated to LMK :)
EDIT: THE LITTLE ICON WAS MADE BY MY FRIEND @sophlockstudios ON INSTAGRAM! they made me a little uncolored doodle of Nezha and i colored it :)

If Ao Guang is still around, I wonder about the other Dragon Kings. If Ao Ji and Ao Lie/The White Dragon Horse are gone, will we find out what happened to them? And what about Ao Lie’s elder brother, Ao Moang? And what about Ao Qin (Dragon of the North) and Ao Shun (Dragon of the South)? And any other children of theirs? Or their sister who had nine sons including minor antagonist  Tuolong? (There isn’t an official family tree, sadly, so I can’t say who else those might be)
I imagine Ao Bing won’t come up, since that story was from Investiture of the Gods, not JTTW. Also, Nezha and Ao Guang are both heroic here, so Nezha murdering Ao Guang’s son might be tough to spin here.
Still, it would nice to know about them, and also have a potential big family of these four clans and their branches! I really would love to see it.

Each child born into the Ao family always has a favorite uncle or auntie. For example, Ao Run's kids all had Ao Guang to look up to and Lian had Yuan and, of course, Cunxin. This would sometimes create a sort of competitive nature between siblings and this includes Moang and Lie fighting over who's the better uncle to Yuan's kids after Lie meets them after returning from the journey.
Joke's on them though, because as it turns out, it's neither of them! In fact, their favorite uncle isn't even biologically related to them at all, but the kids were still too young at the time of meeting him to understand that! Because it's Sun Wukong! He brought them toys and treats and actually let them chew on him while they were still in the biting phase the first time he met them and basically just won their affection forever after that.

No child can resist having Wukong as their favorite uncle

Ok, but... you can bet that Mei isn't the first baby dragon Wukong has had to babysit. He probably knew why dragon-strength grade chew toys were a thing long before and probably had his own trial chewed on by baby crocodile teeth
referencing; shadowpeach babysitting baby Mei + a dog toy.
Absolutely.
I have a hc that when Ao Lie was really small, he'd run off to the Celestial stables/orchards during political summits. Wukong - either as supreme stableboy or Orchard Maiden/Monkey - would be there and be like;
Wukong: "Well I guess I'm tending to a lost foal for the day." *gives knowing wink at the horse-obsessed baby dragon*
Little Ao Lie: ⸜(✧ᗜ✧)⸝
Of course for all his acting as a baby horse - Ao Lie still had baby dragon instincts... which included nomming on things that looked fun to chew on. :3
Wukong let out a yelp loud enough for the whole Western Sea Dragon family to know what their youngest pup had done. Papa Ao Run was super apologetic, while big brother Moang quietly handed Ao Lie an extremely thick-looking teething ring (looked like something you'd give a big dog). Wukong just laughed the incident off, his tail has been bitten many times by curious teething infants back home.
Erlang was also at this incident (he'd been attending the same summit and jumped when he heard his little bro-figure yell), and was pleasantly surprised that there was such a thing as dragon-strength chew toys. He ended up asking a dragon client for one later as payment for defending their territory. Xiaotian Quan still has the (now very chewed-up) toy hidden in her dog bed to this day.
Also fun fact! You can give stable horses thicker dog toys as enrichment items! Wukong is delighted by this fact.

Question:
Where the heck is Ao Lie?
Like, I can understand the other Pilgrims dying. Tripitaka is human, and Baije and Wujing were former celestial warriors cast out from heaven and a mortal life span could have been part of their punishment (or not... *looks at Sandy suspiciously*). But Ao Lie? He's an immortal dragon, direct descendent of one of the 4 great Dragon Kings and a badass in his own right. Why is he not in the show proper? I might have an answer, and it involves Mei.
See, despite being part of the Dragon Clan, Mei and her parents are oddly... human. Like, she still has cool dragon powers from the start, but they seem to have mortal lifespans. For example, Mei calls Ao Lie her great-great-great-times-a-thousand-great-grandfather, but that wouldn't make any sense if she were a full blooded dragon. Dragons, while depicted as different than demons and celestials, are implied to have similarly long lives as evidenced by Ao Guang, who Wukong knows from at least 1,000 years ago, if not more.
Mei's branch of the family, however, can't be more than 700 years old because she inherited the Samadhi Fire from her ancestor. He was not a host for the fourth ring until after the ritual, so he must have married/had children after that. As I stated in my last post, that can't have happened too much more than 500-700 years ago considering Red Son's age. Considering that timeframe and how long dragons probably live, if Mei were a full blooded dragon she should be Ao Lie's daughter, or maybe granddaughter. So she has to be at least partly, if not mostly, human.
Now, here's a question: do you think Ao Run, a Dragon King, would have approved of his son settling down with some human woman? Do you think he might have, oh I don't know, forbade his son from seeing her? Do you think Ao Lie listened?
My answers are yes, yes, and a big fat no.
My theory is that Ao Lie was punished for getting in a relationship with a human woman in defiance of his father, but quietly, so that no celestial monkeys come in to try and help their bestie. And in order to keep the Great Sage Equal to Heaven from asking to many questions about where his sworn brother has gotten to, they come up with a lie that Wukong won't think too much about. Perhaps he got sick and died, or maybe he ascended and is doing Very Important Things for a Buddha or Bodhisattva. No matter what, he's not coming back and can't see his friend ever again.
That still leaves his wife, now a very single mother. Moang or Longnu could have intercede and convinced their father not to do anything to her and their brother's child, but not welcome them into the clan either. Maybe Ao Lie even took the punishment under the condition that his family wouldn't be harmed, but they were also banned from asking a certain monkey for any help. Thus, Mei's branch of the Dragon Clan spread into the human world and prospered because they were part dragon after all, but not really welcome in Ao Run's court either. This would explain why her part of the family seems a bit separated from the rest of the clan. Ao Guang, for instance, didn't know about her at all, despite her being his brother's great-something-granddaughter. You could chalk that up to him not keeping track of every member of a very large clan, but it could also be that his brother tried to keep his son's 'shame' a secret.
This theory probably isn't cannon, but damn if it isn't a good tragic love story!!! It also holds the possibility of Ao Lie escaping his punishment and coming back....

How do you have an episode revolving around the troubled son of Dragon King of the Jing River kidnapping a princess, Zhu Bajie, and Tripitaka and inviting Ao Run and the Crown Prince Moang to come deal with it, and Sun Wukong repeatedly insisting it's a family affair and strictly the family should deal with it
and have the audacity to not write Ao Lie into the script
I'm just so utterly baffled by this, it would have been so perfect and so meaningful for him to play a major role in this episode
like. The disgraced prince whom Ao Guang described as suffering and troubled and the deviant prince who began to cause problems? The son whom his father sent to be executed for arson but didn't even know his nephew was committing heinous sins? The admirable and upright crown prince and his damned little brother?
It would have been so much more meaningful if Ao Lie was the one to bring his cousin to submission and show his father and brother that he's worth something and he's capable of redemption, for them to acknowledge he's a member of their family deserving of their love and forgiveness.
To see Ao Lie and his brother fight together would have been incredible.
For Ao Lie, the son who had once been troublesome, to conquer the troublesome cousin, in a similar vein to Sun Wukong's fight with Liu Er Mihou.
did i mention the visual contrast that would have been between them
Tumblr media
just. what the heck man, i'm so sad right now

As a result of their break-up and especially after the law that forbade immortal and mortal relationships gets changed, Moang, Yuan, and Lie all tend to be pretty protective of their sister whenever she and Erlang are even in the same room as each other, knowing he's still in love with her.
Monkey, meanwhile, couldn't be prouder of her while also comforting her whenever she's feeling upset over her past relationship with the warrior god and Ao Run is... well, he's terrified. Partially because he fears his family losing favor with the Jade Emperor, but also mostly because he thinks his precious daughter has been corrupted by Sun Wukong just because she managed to impress the demon at all! So when he eventually finds out that Nezha has basically been unofficially adopted by Yuan's family (however much Yuan himself denies it), the dragon king nearly has a heart attack.
—Serenity
I love that the entirety of Ao Run's family is specifically doing exactly what he doesn't want them to do.
Sniff, look at these dragon princes and princess go.

She's adorable! Thanks! Though thinking about SXJ now, I just remembered that neither @illustriousellarious or I have ever said anything about their first meeting!
So I'm not sure if you've seen The Swan Princess, but the main characters, Derek and Odette, are also betrothed and absolutely can't stand each other at first. There's even a whole song about it at the beginning.
With Ao Lie and Su Xiaojiao, it's a similar case. It's more that they resent the fact that they're being used as political pawns that really has them worked up, but because they're still kids, they end up directing the anger towards each other instead, to the point where Ao Lie literally calls her "Little Beast" whenever he's talking about her, but never actually says it to her face.
So when he returns home from the Journey, she's there waiting at the door of the palace and because of her clothing and especially due to the fact that he hadn't seen her in a long time, mistakes her for a servant until his brother Ao Moang corrects him, but it's already too late, and after he accidentally insults her again, she goes off on him before stomping on his foot and returns to her room.
Naturally, Ao Moang has no sympathy at all and dryly says that his little brother should take up writing and call his piece How to Insult Women.
Later, after the others reunite and tell each other how their respective returns went, the usually silent Ao Lie just vents and tells them all about Su Xiaojiao, making her appear worse that she actually is. So when Monkey meets her, he's all like, "Oh, so this is the little beast!" Of course, this only angers her more, Ao Lie tries to play it off as it being a term of endearment used by demons, which she takes to mean that he's calling her a demon, and an exasperated Ao Lie just tells her to throw her drink in his face already. She happily does and then stomps on his foot again.
After she leaves, Monkey teases Ao Lie about them liking each other, the dragon thinks Wukong has finally lost it and demands to know what about what just happened would indicate that, and Wukong explains that this was exactly how DBK and PIF flirted with each other when they were younger. Turns out, "little beast" actually is a term of endearment in the demon world.
—Serenity
I watched that movie when I was a kid I remember very little of it
But Xiaojioa stomping on Ao Lie's foot twice and throwing her drink at him it's hilarious!
I can also see "Little beast" turn into a nickname Ao lie uses for Xiaojiao when he feels playful after the two had started dating.
I also wonder how they go from seemingly hating each other to actually starting to like one another. Does it start with the whole combat fan thing?

Note
When they were all younger, Lie would often come into his big brother's room and sleep there, scared that Sun Wukong or some other demon was hiding in the dark and waiting to eat him or that Nezha would come and kill him. Moang would get annoyed at first, but even then, he never kicked him out. This soon became a regular thing, with Yuan and Cunxin often joining them.
One particular night, the kids overhear Ao Run arguing with his brothers and this scares Lie into thinking that that'll be them one day, so the siblings reaffirm the promise they'd already made to their mother, that they won't grow up to be all grumpy and stupid like the adults have been and that they'll all stay best friends forever!
Their mother dies only months after this and Lie knows he's no longer welcome in his big brother's room when he's shoved to the ground after trying to sleep on the bed again.
In the end, it's only the twins who still try to hold on to this promise, Yuan especially. So the fact that little LieLie would eventually find a new family that would include a trio of demons—with one of them even being the infamous Sun Wukong—is something he finds almost hilarious.

WHAT DID I EVER DO TO YOU THAT YOU WANT TO KILL ME SO BAD

Just checked the Chinese version, and yeah, Ao Guang does call the Dragon of the West 敖闰 (Ao Run). Interesting the English version went with the more uncommon Ji, though. Not a bad thing, of course. Also, I was catching up on the stream, so while we're talking about Ao Guang's brothers, the other two are named Ao Shun (Dragon of the North) and Ao Qin (Dragon of the South).
I've mentioned this before, but as even more of a reminder, according to JttW, they also have a deceased unnamed sister who'd been married to the also dead Jing River Dragon King, having had nine children with him prior to his death, with the youngest (a lizard dragon) causing trouble for the Pilgrims when he kidnaps Tang Sanzang and Zhu Bajie to serve them as a meal for one of his uncles on his birthday, and said uncle is completely unaware about any of this until Monkey confronts him about it directly and Ao Moang is sent to help Sun Wukong apprehend him.
Again, this family is a mess and I love it! XD
Anyway, hope you enjoy the rest of the season!
—Serenity
Ah, thank you! I keep forgeting those two's names for some reasons

Same anon who's been trying to do research on the dragons and I've been trying to find if Ao Cinxin (敖寸心) even exists since her only mention is on Wikipedia, there's no citation to this claim, and the page on Longnü doesn't mention the disciple having gone by that name, much less being the daughter of Ao Run.
That being said, however, if Ao Moang is... Ao Moang and Ao Lie is the regarded as the family disappointment, then I can see this hypothetical sister and disciple of Guanyin as being Señorita Perfecta.
The Golden Child.
Practically perfect in every way.
And if she were to be a disciple of Guanyin, then that'd be alot for her brothers to live up to.
OH! I see what you're putting down!
You have a situation similiar to the one with Isabella and Mirabel in Encanto (spoilers for the movie btw).
Ao Cinxin is the perfect child, she's Guanyin's dissciple for crying out loud! And Ao Moang is the first child, all expectations fell on him at first. And maybe he was meeting those expectaions until Cinxin was born and then the first prince fell out of graces pretty fast. And it's maybe why he started to act like an asshole at first! It doesn't justify him but it explains it. Maybe he started with Cinxin but when she left he started to do it with a baby Ao Lie.
And that just starts a cycle of putting all the expectations on the youngest child while also knowing he'll never be as good as his older sister

So thinking about that one meme, I feel like this is pretty much the sort of dynamic the dragons would have with each other in a nutshell. XD
Su Xiaojiao: My boyfriend is too tall for me to kiss him on the lips. What should I do?
Ao Moang: Punch him in the stomach. Then, when he doubles over in pain, kiss him.
Ling Yu: Tackle him.
Wen Zhu: Kick him in the shins.
Wen Jiahao: Dump him!
Ao Lie: NO TO ALL OF THOSE! JUST ASK ME TO LEAN DOWN!

It eventually turns into a sort of almost cartoonish rivalry between them: Sun Wukong comes into the Western Sea kingdom and Ao Run just tries to find more and more creative ways to keep him out. Not because he disapproves of his son's friendship with him (though he doesn't neccesarily approve of it either), but because, well, it's Monkey.
Eventually, the dragon kids (even Moang) are so entertained that they take part in gambling to see just how Sun Wukong will get past Ao Run this time (Ao Lie almost always wins, having known Sun Wukong the longest), and at some point, even Uncle Guang joins in when he comes over to visit. He's tried so hard to tell his little brother to just let the monkey do what he wants, but Ao Run has always been stubborn and he refuses to be made a mockery out of a demon.
—Serenity
Too bad for Ao Run then, because he will keep being the mockery of a demon.
At least Wukong and the two dragon princes are having fun!
