In the Young Wizards 'verse, how would the universe handle two wizard-potentials going for the same manual at the same time, like reaching for the same book at the library? Would it somehow magically duplicate itself? Would it avoid the question entirely by waiting to choose the potentials until later? Would either (or both) of them get a notification of the manual installing itself as an app on their phones, thus distracting them from grabbing the book? (So many options!)
The Young Wizards series is one of my all-time favorites, by the way. Thank you for putting it into the world ❤️❤️ I need to reread it again soon!
First of all: thanks for the nice words! Delighted that the books were there for you. 😊
As to your question: I'm not sure this is a problem that's likely to come up, for an array of reasons that have to do with the basic nature of YW-'verse wizardry.
Basically, though: every wizard (like every other human, and every other sentient being) occupies a unique temporospatial position that doesn't just involve where they are, and when they are, but who they are; as well as where they've been, and what they've experienced. Different people, born in different places and raised in different ways by other different people, are inevitably going to have different personalities and different worldviews... and therefore, also, different preferred ways to engage with wizardry.* The chances that a given instrumentality offered to a given person is going to be an exact or even near-exact duplicate of the one offered to another person are pretty small. I don't think we need to worry too much about the two-hands-reaching-for-the-same-Manual-at-the-same-time paradigm.
Bear in mind also that there are a lot of different ways to get at Speech-based wizardly info besides books. Offered instrumentalities can vary wildly due not just to cultural norms, but personal preferences. Someone who likes stories but doesn't care for reading physical books might have their Manual turn up as an (apparent) audiobook. (Or maybe a podcast: or a videoblog: who am I to judge?) After all, we've already had wizards who manage spells or otherwise engage with wizardry by listening to the Sea, acquiring the Speech through sentient laptops, hearing it as in-mind speech which they manage by (probably somewhat Speech-enhanced) memory; by direct communications with the Powers that Be via an (apparent) little magical light source they carry around with them, and numerous other methods. (And don't forget the slightly unusual instrumentality that turns up in the YW 30-Day OTP sequence, in which one new probationary wizard obtains his Manual access via what appears to be Tuxedo Mask's rose from Sailor Moon.) ...Additionally, I have a vague memory of one wizard carrying around a Manual access that seems to be the one and only Magic 8-Ball featuring answers that are not hazy. Don't ask me which book it's in, though. Might be Games Wizards Play, but that's a guess.
As for app installations—no reason that Manual access might not turn up as an app update. Also, in terms of dedicated devices, wizPads and wizPhones (formerly wizPods) have been around for a while now, and both have become canonical over time: Darryl McAllister's using one of the wizPhone-based Manual versions in A Wizard of Mars. (Though these may occasionally present problems for practitioners testing out a new paradigm.) As a wizard grows into their practice of the Art, it's not at all unusual to change instrumentalities as one finds something that works better for them than what the Powers sent them the first time out.
Anyway: hope this helps! 😀
*As for the probably inevitable question, "But what if they're twins?" To quote a well-known authority, "It's never twins." :) (And that said: starting with Wizards at War, we see that occasionally, it is twins... and I'm pretty sure they acquired their delivery instrumentalities separately, though I can't recall whether this gets dealt with in canon.)

July 2022
Today is the day Elvis is premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, and I'm terrified to put it in simple terms. Austin and I are currently in the car on the way there, and I'm trying my best not to chip my nail polish on the rings my stylist slipped on my fingers. I keep nervously messing with my jewelry, but I'm keeping my hands out of my hair for the most part. Austin notices my nervousness and gently takes my hand in his. I glance at him, and he's smiling softly at me, eyeing my outfit carefully.
"You look beautiful. I'm so excited for everyone to see how talented and gorgeous you are," Austin says.
You'd think after all these years, I would stop getting butterflies. But they roar in my stomach anyway. I smile back at Austin and focus on the scenery flashing by the backseat window. I would never have thought I'd be here. I'm still convinced I'm dreaming. There's no way I played a significant role in a big movie and am now on my way to a world-renowned film festival. But I am. In a shimmery rose gold gown, my hair delicately braided out of my eyes, and a face of glowing makeup, I have truly arrived. I'm who I'm finally supposed to be.
When the car slows to a stop, the nervousness peaks again, and I try my best not to tremble as I follow Austin out of the vehicle. I plaster a smile upon my face for the cameras and all but death grip Austin's hand as I finally plant both my feet on the ground. Flashes surround the both of us as we walk towards the carpet where the rest of the cast has also just arrived. It's been a little while since Austin and I saw the rest of the cast, as everyone had started new projects. So when Dacre opens his arm to offer me a hug, I accept it with a smile. We both flash grins for the paparazzi. Meanwhile, Austin wanders over to Priscilla, where they have some small talk. I observe as Austin motions toward me. He catches my gaze and beckons me to come to where he stands. I gulp nervously, having never properly met Priscilla Presley. We've had brief conversations over Zoom and the phone, but we've never seen each other face-to-face due to the pandemic. Until now.
"Priscilla, let me formally introduce you to Roman," Austin places his hand on the small of my back, gently pushing me toward the woman with flaming red hair and a brilliant smile.
"Hi," I say meekly, "It's good to finally meet you," I reach out a hand for her to shake, not knowing what to do.
Priscilla takes my hand and wraps it in both of hers, cameras flashing beside us at the gesture.
"I'm delighted to meet you as well. Austin talks about you all the time," she says.
"Oh," I glance at him with a small smile, "All good things, I hope."
"Wonderful things. From what he's told me, I have no doubt that your performance in the movie will be fantastic."
Priscilla is asked for more photos down the carpet, so she lets go of me with a final wave.
"You look starstruck. Never thought I'd see the day that happened," Austin says jokingly into my ear.
I roll my eyes, "Of course I am. She's Priscilla Presley!"
Austin shakes his head at me, laughing softly as he places his hand on my waist. We stood for photos for a while with each other and our costars. All my nerves slowly melt away until it's time for the screening to begin.
Austin and I are next to each other as the film begins. I grasp his hand. This is the first time anyone, including the cast, has seen the movie since editing finished. As the movie continues, I find myself enthralled with Austin's acting. He has truly outdone himself, and I couldn't be more proud. It's odd seeing myself on a big screen as a main character. I struggle to hold back tears when the final scene is on the screen. Baz did a great job pulling at heartstrings throughout the movie, especially at the end. When the film finishes, the theater erupts into applause. And it doesn't stop. Austin stands up along with Baz, and Austin pulls me up with him. Eyes are on us from every direction, and I feel incredibly seen, but in a good way. The applause lasts for over ten minutes. Tears well up in Austin's and my eyes, and a sense of pride swells in our chests. The underdogs in acting have now done something monumental and did a kickass job at it, too.
The after-party is as wild as you'd expect. I was swarmed several times by different people asking me questions, patting me on the back, and gushing about how good my acting was. I took every compliment the best I could, even if I still doubted my new talent at times. But I wasn't expecting what was about to happen at all.
"Roman Todd, right?"
I spin around from my place at the bar, a glass of champagne in my hand, "Yes?"
"I'm Matt Duffer," the man behind me offered a hand for me to shake, "I loved your performance."
"Thank you," I smile, trying to decipher where I recognize him from, "I wasn't expecting the role, but I'm glad to have played it."
"So I've heard," Matt returns my smile, "I'm impressed. It's not often an extra comes up so fast in the business."
"I'm just as shocked as you are," I say, taking a sip of my champagne, wondering where this conversation will go.
"Have you thought about what you're going to do next?"
I ponder for a moment before answering honestly, "I actually haven't."
Matt rubs his chin, "Well, my brother and I are about to start filming our show again. We're looking for a certain personality type for a new character. And you seem to fit that character from what I've gauged so far."
"Really? What show?" I furrow my eyebrows, somewhat surprised that a producer is interested in me.
"Just this little show on Netflix called Stranger Things. Ever heard of it?" Matt says jokingly.
My eyes widen, "Of course I have! You want me to be a character in the show?"
"I'm definitely keeping an eye on you for it. Here's my information," Matt says, fishing a card out of his pocket, "Call me when you want to meet and talk with my brother and me. We definitely would love to get to know you and have you audition for the role."
"Wow, okay. I'll contact you when I can for sure," I grin, trying not to seem giddy.
"Great," Matt returns my grin and bids me farewell, disappearing into the party crowd.
I down the rest of the champagne in one go and scan the room for anyone I recognize. I spot Luke walking up to the bar, and I nearly bolt over to him.
"Guess what," I tap his shoulder, excitement obviously etched on my face.
I shove the card in Luke's face, and his face contorts into a large smile after he quickly scans it.
"That's awesome, Ro! Have you told Austin yet?" Luke asks, his eyes glowing.
"You're the first person I spotted, so you're the first to know," I say.
"Let's go find him. He's gotta know right now!" Luke grabs my hand and pulls me through the crowd.
We finally see Austin chatting with Baz and approach them.
"Guess what happened!" I gush when Austin turns to me.
"What?"
"One of the Duffer Brothers approached me, and he thinks I'd be a good fit for a new character on Stranger Things."
Austin's eyes widen with an equally wide smile, and he grabs my face in his hands, "Baby, I'm so proud of you."
"What a wonderful opportunity!" Baz says, "That show is very popular. It could open many doors for you."
"I think you've already helped open doors for me, Baz. Thank you," I say as Austin pulls away from me.
Baz looks at me proudly with a knowing gleam in his eye.
Maybe I'm not just an extra after all.

First of all, I hope that wherever you are in life you're healthy and as happy as you can be. I also must confess that I did reactivate my tumblr account from eight years ago to send this message.
In high school, I used to read your Glee fanfics at night alone in my room when I was so far in the closet that I was eating fucking Turkish delight in Narnia. Those stories breathed life into me and unraveled a beautifully complicated and seemingly unattainable fantasy where two women can be together romantically. Granted Santana and Quinn did have a hard time staying together, but you get my point.
I used to get butterflies in my stomach when I saw that there was a new chapter update, not only because I got to crawl away into a queer world, but because the creation of this world was done so carefully and artfully. The complexity of LIALTHI and IBYM are impressive and exhilarating, it was better than watching a thrilling movie. While much of the thrill was the queer representation--if it can really be called "representation," when it was simply was just the queerNESS--but the writing and storylines were beautifully crafted while both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I felt like I experienced every emotion outlined in the text on screen of my iPhone 3 before I panically cleared my browsing history out of fear someone might discover my sins.
You didn't ask, but don't worry, things got better. I'm out and have worked through plenty of internalized homophobia. Even in a healthy gal pal relationship. Glad I didn't place bets on how my future would pan out when I was that sad sack in high school because I'd have lost a lot of money.
I recently reread LIALTHI and IBYM , they were wonderful again as I expected. And while we've come a long way in access to queer storylines and leading characters and shows, I can't seem to stop thinking about Quinn and Santana's story in this series. I'm left a little hollow thinking about them swimming around in the abyss, unfinished, unrequited, undeserving of being left on the precipice.
Let me be clear, this is NOT me shaming you for not finishing the story. These characters are creations of your brain and they don't "deserve" anything. You did unpaid labor that probably benefited thousands of people, and for that you should not feel bad about dropping off. This was meant to more be a "thank you" for creating this world. And while I'm sad the world now exists in a plane that doesn't intersect with our own, I'm better off for crossing through it for the time that I could. Sometimes I like to think that unfinished stories go off into space and finish themselves (wanky) purely for their own benefit.
Like many, I was devastated about Naya's death. I felt like she played a character I knew in so many other ways, from so many other non-canon stories, and now they were all lost. I thought I would feel queasy reading anything in this world again, but it felt like coming home to friends. To friends who were there for me when I needed them most. And who I'm still invested in after all this time.
Now I know I just (genuinely!!) said I feel no type of frustration or sense of injustice that you didn't finish the story, because you're a person who has a real life that exists outside of fanfiction.net. And I can't emphasize enough how that is far more important. However I would low key pay you to finish lol. Kidding, not really, name your price, jk... :)
Anyway. Thank you for giving so many extra layers to these characters and for serving a community with your creative mind. It was special for me to be able to go back and read one of my favorite stories. Again, I truly hope you are out there living a life you love. Stay well xx
Whew,
This is a such a gift of a message. I wish I could ping you in some way, Anon, to tell you that I've finally responded to this.
Love the Narnia reference. The wanky one later as well.
Writing fanfiction really helped me. I had been "out" for years before I started writing but my imagination when it came to queerness really expanded when I began writing and engaging with the community here.
I want you to know that they got a happy ending. That was the only plan ever for me. They are healthy (working more towards whatever that is bit by bit) and happy together.
Feel free to message me off anon and we can discuss the things I had planned or how happy you are with your gal pal. I am happy for you and I am fucking proud of you.

Y’all I got the funniest email from the BioWare Gear store today regarding my preordered nug and I just had to copy and paste it here because this shit is hilarious
——————————————————————————
There is no "right" way to tell a fan that there is an issue with their order...so let's skip past the awkward introductions and just jump in with both feet.
Recently, we were contacted by the folks at Sanchee about our latest order of Squeaking Nugs they were providing to us. When they got the shipment from the manufacturing plant, there was a issue with those cute pink Nugs.
Tumblr media
You see, instead of the normal dark pink spots, these little guys have black spots. There was lots of shock and dismay, but then they found this note in the crate...
“Greetings Adored Readers!
NugWatch (the only scholarly dispatch all about that most noble of creatures) is here with an incredible update! We recently received news about a colony of Nugs found living on an island off the southern coast of Rivain, in a series of caves north of the city of Llomerryn. Llomerryn (as you’re no doubt aware) currently serves as a port of ill-repute for the Felicisima Armada.
There’s some debate over how this colony of nugs came to be on the island, but we at NugWatch have theorized that some sailors in years past brought them to the island (either as pets or provisions) and lost of track of them, and the Nugs, being the incredibly adorable survivors that they are, have thrived. What isn’t a matter of debate is that, while undeniably cute, this group of Nugs is having a negative effect on the native flora and fauna of the island. Luckily, with the help of a powerful friend from Orlais (and after a series of negotiations with a captain whose name I shan’t transcribe here for the sake of propriety) we were able to secure all of the nugs for transport and adoption to loving homes across Thedas!
It should be stated that there appear to be several minor differences apparent in this colony when compared to the common nug you’re all familiar with. Most notably, the spots on their hind-quarters are considerably darker than on their mainland cousins. Less stark, but no less fascinating, the flesh of their inner-ears appears to be somewhat darker as well, and their overall skin tone seems faintly deeper, too. We haven’t yet been able to figure out the cause of these slight differences (though we suspect being fed off of scraps from the privateers… unique diets has played a role, at least in part.
Regardless, we know it won’t affect that love and affection our readers will show to these delightful companions, and we urge you to look among them and see if there’s one (or perhaps more) you’d like to adopt into your family. Take a look today and help us get all of these lovable little scamps to good homes!”
So, now you know that we were sent some very rare and uncommon Nugs instead of our normal Squeaking Nug. The question is now, do you wish to accept your amazing new Black Spotted Nug, or would you prefer to receive a refund for you order.
If You Want A Refund:
All you need to do is contact our Customer Service team and request your refund prior to 3/11. They can be reached at https://gear.bioware.com/pages/customer-service
If You Want Your Nug:
You 've got it easy. You can do absolutely nothing and your nug will be sent to you after the deadline expires.
PLEASE NOTE:
While we might be having a little fun with this announcement - we certainly aren't taking this issue lightly. Both Sanchee and the BioWare Gear Store are very upset about the breach in trust we've committed with this manufacturing mistake. Please accept our most sincere apologies. We hope that we can earn your trust agin in the future.
——————————————————————————
They fucking made up lore to go with their manufacturing error I can’t even take it
Anyway catch me snuggling my rare and adorable black spotted nug in the near future

We're Home
Actually, we've been home for a couple of days- I'm just exhausted. Not even sure why I'm tired, probably from wondering if the people on our flights were super spreaders. Honestly, the airports and flights were better than I expected. The airports looked like ghost towns, security screening took mere seconds, and flying into Baltimore our flight was about half full. Coming home our flights were packed and that made me nervous. We're vaccinated and we never took our masks off in the airports or onboard - I'm not sure what else we could have done. I'd never forgive myself if we carried this awful virus to our sweet, unvaccinated grandgirl. ANYWAY... Our trip was quick but productive. We covered a lot of ground and definitely know where we would and would not like to live. I took notes because I knew that it would all become a blur..."Which town was that blue house in?" We still love Chestertown. It offers an awful lot, especially for people staring retirement in the face. The only problem with Chestertown is that the housing inventory is limited. We saw an adorable house that had been flipped - top to bottom with gorgeous HGTV worthy finishes. But they saved money by not installing central air. As a woman of a certain age, there are some things I'm not willing to compromise on and good air conditioning is one of them. The closer we looked the more it seemed that money wasn't the only reason for leaving out the HVAC update, that perhaps the electrical wasn't upgraded on the (old) home and might not support a system. Farewell, beautiful kitchen. I love the way you look but I'm not willing to sweat inside my home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We found several neighborhoods in Easton that we liked - quiet, wooded, lovely homes, and convenient to everything from healthcare to shopping. Easton also has a charming downtown. Loads of history, sweet parks, fun shops and restaurants. We explored a bit and sat outside Storm & Daughters ice cream shop and enjoyed a cone. There's a lot to like about Easton and it's definitely at the top of our list. Bonus, Talbot County property taxes are quite reasonable. Just down the road from Easton we toured Denton. It's a small but vibrant town. They boast a cute, historic downtown, and seemed to have an involved community. We found a couple of neighborhoods that we really liked, one even had lots for sale. The downside is that even though it's just a few miles to Easton and Talbot County, Denton is in Caroline County and the property taxes are much higher. Still okay, but high enough to make me pump the brakes. We're definitely not taking Denton off the list, but we'd probably opt for less house there. I'll be honest, my favorite house was in Denton. It ticked ALL of my boxes. Roomy, updated kitchen, pantry, walk-in closets, garage. The back yard was postage stamp sized, but we're not getting any younger so it's fine. The neighborhood was delightful and convenient to so much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I checked on the property taxes for 2020...almost four thousand. Get outta' here. I know that we're really spoiled with low property taxes here in Wilson County, and we understand that we'll pay more in Maryland...but...ugh. Right now there are people in New Hampshire saying, "Four grand?? That's a steal! Buy it!" It's all perspective and something I'll have to work on. We traveled town to town, loving some of them and putting others in our rear view as fast as possible. Centreville? Loved it, but pricey. Ridgely? NOPE. Rock Hall? Charming, loved the Harbor Woods neighborhood, but they have one mom & pop grocery store and I didn't even see a clinic anywhere. It's 30 minutes to Chestertown, some of it through a wildlife refuge where my brain was screaming "SNAKES!". Adorable, but no. I think it will be Chestertown or Easton for us. Exploring the Eastern Shore was a fabulous history lesson and I'm eager to learn more. Back in the day they were big on their monarchs. There's Queen Anne, Princess Anne, Queenstown, Caroline County, and so on. In a pretty park in downtown Centreville there's a really lovely statue of Queen Anne. Some 271 years after Queen Anne of England signed the charter that created Queen Anne County on Maryland's Eastern Shore, a statue in her honor was unveiled by her namesake, the current Princess Anne. I'll bet that was a big day in Centreville. The statue shows the queen seated, holding the charter she's just signed and a little spaniel sleeps behind her chair. I thought I'd snapped a couple of pictures, but all I can find is this really bad video.
youtube
I was more in love with that tree than with the statue. Just across the street from that park was an Irish pub named O' Shucks. In my mind that was amusing, like saying darn it. More likely it has something to do with shucking oysters.
Beyond all the royalty and colonial settlements of the 1600 and 1700 hundreds, the Eastern Shore also has a rich history of Underground Railroad and abolitionist activity. Cambridge was the birthplace of Harriet Tubman and there's a museum and plenty of historic spots documenting her fearless work. Over in Easton they're proud of native son, Frederick Douglass. His story is fascinating, from slave to statesman. He was self-taught - a brilliant orator and writer, responsible for great social reformation, tireless in his pursuit of equality and fairness. He was a staunch supporter of women's suffrage, saying, "In this denial of the right to participate in government, not merely the degradation of woman and the perpetuation of a great injustice happens, but the maiming and repudiation of one-half of the moral and intellectual power of the government of the world." In other words, by not allowing women a vote our country was wasting half of its intellect. Here in Tennessee you'll find proudly displayed busts of KKK leaders in government buildings. Our parks are home to statues of the confederate generals who fought to keep slavery alive. Don't give me that B.S. about the Civil War being about state's rights. Ask yourself, a state's right to do what? Enslave people! It was economically beneficial for the south to enrich itself on the backs of slaves. Okay, I'm rambling- from property taxes to Civil War issues. None of which you probably care about. The very best part of the trip was, of course, quality time with the grandgirl. And oh, she is grand. We played princesses, we did a craft, we read books and made snacks. We squeezed a whole lot of fun and love into a short visit. She's smart, funny, curious, sweet, and beautiful. That's my 100% unbiased opinion. No matter which town we land in, it's closer to her and we'll get to enjoy all of the milestones that are so important. FaceTime is fine in a pinch, but nothing beats being there. Time for me to hush and get a couple of things done around here. There's laundry to fold and a dishwasher to unload. I'm currently sitting at my desk, gazing out at the gardens (the pumpkin plants were 3/4 dead when we came home and I'm not taking any heroic measures to save them) and loving what September is showing me so far. I love this month, the light hits differently and everything seems to calm down. After the busy, blazing summer months it's a welcome change. We still have some hot weather ahead, but there's a hint of change in the air.
youtube
Also, I'd like to add that IT'S JUST 53 DAYS UNTIL HALLOWEEN!!!
Tumblr media
I'm getting happier by the day. Join me. Stay safe, stay well, and start stashing away some candy for the kids. XOXO, Nancy
