I think the reason why the Nomai statue in the museum chose our astronaut player character is because Gabbro, who was also chosen by another Nomai statue before us, isn't fucking doing anything with his remaining time. lol

Think about it. You're supposed to stand IN FRONT of the statue for it to make the connection. Instead, this one had to MOVE itself to turn to your direction. It moved itself to face you. It didn't connect with you when you were in front of it the first time but it chose to do it when you were at its SIDE when you were about to leave. It's probably because there was someone standing nearby at that time and if it did its thing right then & there, your friend might've interrupted or interfered or could get affected. Who knows? But I think it had to force itself to move because Ash Twin Project is getting desperate and really needs someone capable enough to finish the Nomais' mission. There were only 22 minutes left after all.

But Gabbro is also capable. Sure, their ship is floating aimlessly at Giant's Deep but it didn't look broken. And they actually went to go check on the Deep Space Satellite so, they still have the energy to go anywhere. Them connecting with a statue may have been an accident of sorts but it still chose them the way the other one chose us. But alas, Gabbro the bro is just way too chill & relaxed to want to try to figure out what's up with the supernova & the "time loop".

So, our player character was ATP's last resort.
