for this, send me a number and a ship and i’ll write a thing!
There’s a certain calm around mid-day you’ve grown used to. It might be your room, how it feels like a home away from home with the sun just right and the controlled chaos that is the mess that spreads. You think it’s the kids with their tiny voices and their tiny hands and the light pitter-patter they make as they reach for the collection of utensils in the middle of the table. You think it might be Clarke and the way her tongue peeks from between her lips as she scribbles away on her colorful piece of construction paper, the crayon small in her hand.
It also might be all of these at once.
“Close your eyes and hold out your hands.”
You look at Clarke next to you and her smile is wide, a hand hidden behind her back and the paper gone. The suspicion you feel is second only to the warmth that spreads through your chest, but you raise a brow at her anyway, taking a quick glance at the children gathered around the table before setting down your colored pencil and wiping your palms on your jeans.
You hold out your hand, but Clarke chuckles and gives a slight shake of her head. “Nuh uh, eyes closed.”
And after one last glance at the kids, all too preoccupied to give the display much attention, you do. It’s a few seconds before you feel the the roughness of the construction paper being placed in your hands and the brief softness of Clarke’s skin where it touches yours.
“Can I open them now?”
“Mmhmm,” Clarke hums.
So you do, and in your hands is a neatly folded green paper with your name. You open it carefully, taking in the detailed little toy car speeding along the bottom and the writing which reads in her messy crayon script: I wheelie like you.
“I wheelie like you, too,” you say back, lips splitting in a grin. Without caring of who might see, you lean over and kiss her gently on the cheek.
A loud groan sounds at the back of the room and you look over just in time to see Anya roll her eyes, perform an about-face, and walk right back out the door.

#it's essentially a romance#wlw#that follows a young lakota girl in the mid 1700s who is born two-souled and sets to fulfill her destiny among her people#and i was hesitant to read it at first cause there's was no way i could be sure/know the book would respectful in its portayal#but the reviews were overwhelming positive and from the sample i read it appeared to be written with care#And i immensely enjoyed the immersion into lakota culture#and subsequently anpo#one of the two main leads#who i loved like she's such a great character#but some of the plot points and aspects of kathleen#the other main lead#left me like !!!!???#in not a great way#i think i set myself up to be disappointed bc i went in after reading the sample with my own ideas about how things might evolve and grow#and felt like let down that the main conflict near the end centered around a /misunderstanding/#i really realllly hate when romances use misunderstandings as a way to make conflict#idk this is kinda gettin rambly now but i wanna shout about this book to somebody but it looks like its a niche and rather unknown read#and its not like it was bad!!!#overall i would say i enjoyed it a lot but like it could have been mooorree#so im here like :CC#blah de ba blah
