My "new" sewing machine I got myself for the holidays!
Well, I say new. She's a 116 year old hand-cranked Singer model 28, dated to the 4th of September 1907 with the grapevine designs and the "Victorian" decals if I did my research right. She pre-dates the independent governance of my country by three weeks, and can't be said to be built like a tank because she was built before tanks were invented. But whatever she's built like, she sews like a fucking champ despite being 116. Four layers of fabric on a stitch length of about a millimetre? Give her a challenge already, she takes that like it's nothing.
All she needed when she arrived was some cleaning up and a bit of tension adjustment to her presser foot!
I shall name her Bernadette, for yes I am a gullible simple bitch who got into antique sewing machines via Bernadette Banner. So in honour blame, she shall be Bernadette. And now, since I was hand-stitching before and not very well, the clothes I make shan't fall to pieces upon the mere glance of a washing machine!

Tragedy!
Halfway through 9 meters of ruffles my ruffle attachment broke 😭
The little bit that pushed the pleat somehow got under the needle and it broke. I don't know how that is possible. Now it drops pleats🥲

This is feeling like a "little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing" situation, because I know what that is, and I know just enough about this stuff now to feel like I could/should go around buying old machines out of people's barns & fixing them all up.
I am exercising self control, telling myself that they don't usually sell for enough restored to make it a business decision, and you should finish the machines you have first. (But not enough self control to stop checking fb & CL for cheap good machines.)
It's a 1916 Singer 27, with the treadle cabinet, and I bet they'd take $40 for it if you offered.

Introducing the newest addition to my sewing table. A Singer 28k from 1894. After many years and some considerable patience I'm so happy to finally have a machine from the late 1800s.
I can't wait to get sewing on her, but first a once over and some fresh oil.
Sorry for this personal post, I just had to gush about her, ahhh I'm so happy.

Thing I found among my grandmother's things, a geniune Singer that still works like a charm. Might be a mild fire hazard cordwise, but she's a geniune beut and I am very excited to use this!

Handspun socks, a fire on a cold evening. Life's simple pleasures.
-
Another pleasure I've been enjoying lately that isn't as simple, is this retro (second hand) threadle machine I got as a birthday gift the other day. A Husqvarna Class 12, 705. It's in such good condition, almost no crusty grease or dust at all. Only she has a hitch in the way she rotates and it's been wonderfully frustrating and stimulating going through her and trying to find the fault. I'll get there one of these days. I feel it.
Tumblr media
(as a sidenote I've discovered she's a wankel engine. Which has been so much fun trying to wrap my head around. I don't think my Singer back home is built that way. They're really similar in build but the internal mechanisms are actually surprisingly different. It's fascinating.)
Ps: if anyone know anything about her make and model, feel free to tell me. I've found it super difficult in finding out anything about her.

On the subject of “I’m gay, how hard can it be?” please enjoy this picture of my sewing machine’s deconstructed motor and all the old chunky grease I scraped out of her!
Tumblr media
ps. Her name is Greta and her wiring is in good shape! The internal gears need cleaning and re-oiling though

And here is my 1950s Singer sewing machine. This is also an old photo, but she was missing her bobbin, although I think she had nearly everything else. Like the others in my collection, she is a hand crank sewing machine.

Vintage sewing machine: Functional!
I decided to put off dealing with the drawers (if I ever refurbish them at all), painted the stripped pieces black, coated the main section with epoxy (for structure), installed a new belt, and the damn thing even works!
Tumblr media
It’s almost midnight now (oops), but I’m pleased as punch! It’s not the prettiest thing, but nothing that can’t be improved upon later. The main thing is the wood has been treated and sealed so should be more structurally sound and less likely to grow fungus or further rot. The moving bits are all cleaned and freshly lubricated or oiled. The machine itself got a professional dust-off and look over.
And it works!
I’m just bummed it’s too late to actually start using it.
But at least Mr Glee can use the punching bag in the garage again. >>
