FYI artists and writers: some info regarding tumblr's new "third-party sharing" (aka selling your content to OpenAI and Midjourney)
You may have already seen the post by @staff regarding third-party sharing and how to opt out. You may have also already seen various news articles discussing the matter.
But here's a little further clarity re some questions I had, and you may too. Caveat: Not all of this is on official tumblr pages, so it's possible things may change.
(1) "I heard they already have access to my data and it doesn't really matter if I opt out"
From the 404 article:
A new FAQ section we reviewed is titled “What happens when you opt out?” states “If you opt out from the start, we will block crawlers from accessing your content by adding your site on a disallowed list. If you change your mind later, we also plan to update any partners about people who newly opt-out and ask that their content be removed from past sources and future training.”
So please, go click that opt-out button.
(2) Some future user: "I've been away from tumblr for months, and I just heard about all this. I didn't opt out before, so does it make a difference anymore?"
Another internal document shows that, on February 23, an employee asked in a staff-only thread, “Do we have assurances that if a user opts out of their data being shared with third parties that our existing data partners will be notified of such a change and remove their data?” Andrew Spittle, Automattic’s head of AI replied: “We will notify existing partners on a regular basis about anyone who's opted out since the last time we provided a list. I want this to be an ongoing process where we regularly advocate for past content to be excluded based on current preferences. We will ask that content be deleted and removed from any future training runs. I believe partners will honor this based on our conversations with them to this point. I don't think they gain much overall by retaining it.”
It should make a difference! Go click that button.
(3) "I opted out, but my art posts have been reblogged by so many people, and I don't know if they all opted out. What does that mean for my stuff?"
This answer is actually on the support page for the toggle:
This option will prevent your blog's content, even when reblogged, from being shared with our licensed network of content and research partners, including those that train AI models.
And some further clarification by the COO and a product manager:
zingring: A couple people from work have reached out to let me know that yes, it applies to reblogs of "don't scrape" content. If you opt out, your content is opted out, even in reblog form. cyle: yep, for reblogs, we're taking it so far as "if anybody in the reblog trail has opted out, all of the content in that reblog will be opted out", when a reblog could be scraped/shared.
So not only your reblogged posts, but anyone who contributed in a reblog (such as posts where someone has been inspired to draw fanart of the OP) will presumably be protected by your opt-out. (A good reason to opt out even if you yourself are not a creator.)
Furthermore, if you the OP were offline and didn't know about the opt-out, if someone contributed to a reblog and they are opted out, then your original work is also protected. (Which makes it very tempting to contribute "scrapeable content" now whenever I reblog from an abandoned/disused blog...)
(4) "What about deleted blogs? They can't opt out!"
I was told by someone (not official) that he read "deleted blogs are all opted-out by default". However, he didn't recall the source, and I can't find it, so I can't guarantee that info. If I get more details - like if/when tumblr puts up that FAQ as reported in the 404 article - I will add it here as soon as I can.
Edit, tumblr has updated their help page for the option to opt-out of third-party sharing! It now states:
The content which will not be shared with our licensed network of content and research partners, including those that train AI models, includes: • Posts and reblogs of posts from blogs who have enabled the "Prevent third-party sharing" option. • Posts and reblogs of posts from deleted blogs. • Posts and reblogs of posts from password-protected blogs. • Posts and reblogs of posts from explicit blogs. • Posts and reblogs of posts from suspended/deactivated blogs. • Private posts. • Drafts. • Messages. • Asks and submissions which have not been publicly posted. • Post+ subscriber-only posts. • Explicit posts.
So no need to worry about your old deleted blogs that still have reblogs floating around. *\o/*
But for your existing blogs, please use the opt out option. And a reminder of how to opt out, under the cut:
The opt-out toggle is in Blog Settings, and please note you need to do it for each one of your blogs / sideblogs.
On dashboard, the toggle is at https://www.tumblr.com/settings/blog/blogname [replace "blogname" as applicable] down by Visibility:
Tumblr media
For mobile, you need the most recent update of the app. (Android version 33.4.1.100, iOs version 33.4.) Then go to your blog tab (the little person icon), and then the gear icon for Settings, then click Visibility.
Tumblr media
Again, if you have a sideblog, go back to the blog tab, switch to it, and go to settings again. Repeat as necessary.
If you do not have access to the newest version of the app for whatever reason, you can also log into tumblr in your mobile browser. Same URL as per desktop above, same location.
Note you do not need to change settings in both desktop and the app, just one is fine.
I hope this helps!

I think that the “vote blue no matter who” disposition that has spread through American social liberals is honestly a fascinating psychological crisis and another instance of magical thinking at work. Trying to convince people to vote is one thing and at least makes some sense. Though given the frequent inarticulate, condescending approach I see so often, I think there’s a psychological urge to do this so that when they lose because their pitch is unappealing, inadequate, and anti-political, they can remain on moral high ground.
But the invocation often goes beyond that - any public critique of the Dems is considered counterproductive to the election, or at least requires a disclaimer that’s like “make sure you vote for them though!” (No concept of leverage at work here - promising your vote and demanding something in exchange for it are incompatible tactics.) And then, when Biden loses, it won’t be because of *the things that he did* which repelled people - it will be because not enough people listened to us, they willed failure into existence by talking about the problems.
“Vote blue no matter who” is not going to persuade Arab Americans whose family members are being murdered with US-funded munitions or disabled people left out to dry by an inadequate COVID response - this isn’t just a problem of Congressional deadlock, even in areas where Biden has meaningful power he has not used it well or in ways that will be lasting if, at any point, a Democrat is not elected President (which, uh, I think is a reasonable likelihood at some point). Getting the nickname “Genocide” is kind of not great for any political career - but confronting that reality would mean having to think up a new plan for making good things happen politically.
What the public performance of unflinching loyalty to the Democrats does do is absolve the speaker from having to confront that uncomfortable reality. It parallels the cultic or corporate invocation of “FUD” in order to tamp down internal dissent or flight; “actually, you can trust us, you should buy in, ignore your skepticism or critical thought - and if you don’t any consequences are your fault, not ours.” In a weird way, despite the catastrophic predictions, it’s a kind of toxic positivity: even if you vote you should otherwise remain silent on your criticisms or demands because those might convince someone else not to vote.
And I mean, this is all ignoring how utterly fucking repugnant it is to refocus conversations and activism around a US-financed ethnic cleansing back to the presidential election.

The current Polish ruling party is banking heavily on nuclear energy, claiming that the first plant may go live as soon as in 2026. They promote it on billboards, in TV clips, etc. I have two thoughts about it:
Since a large part of the population is in the throes of severe Kaczyński Derangement Syndrome, I wonder how many people (who weren't anti-nuclear before) are anti-nuclear now, just to reflexively oppose anything associated with PiS. My guess, which I have zero ability to verify, would be tens of thousands.
Some opposition candidate (from the Greens, of fucking course) is on the record saying that she got the OK from the opposition leader to possibly look into and "revise" the contracts regarding the construction. Now this may have been exaggerated by the hostile media, but there was also the usual FUD kvetching about the "disadvantages" of nuclear, the trouble with storing waste, and so forth. Now, if they win, and if they actually go though with it...
If they manage to cancel the fucking construction of the power plants...
[I would be advised by my lawyer to not finish this post, if I had one]

There is a widely held belief — thanks to anti-EV FUD sponsored by the fossil fuel industry — that supplying enough electricity to charge all the electric cars expected to be on the road in a few years will cost gazillions of dollars for the grid upgrades needed to meet the demand for EV charging.
Now, thanks to the folks at the Green Energy Consumers Alliance, we have facts we can rely on rather than the disingenuous distortions disseminated by partisan actors who are scared to death that electric cars will wreck their business model and make all those lovely profits they are used to earning disappear. Those people care not one whit about the climate emergency brought on by their own actions. Why believe anything they say when the truth is so easy to obtain?(..)
P.S. All this is true with one caveat, when introducing electric cars on a massive scale, a real functioning electric car infrastructure must also be built. Existing "legacy electric car" charging stations often do not work and exist only in the fantastic tables of statisticians, which have nothing to do with real life. Now, we need to talk not about range anxiety, but about "CHARGER ANXIETY"!!! Public EV charging infrastructure designed for legacy automakers is really crappy (The charging stations simply do not work and no one maintains them. And those useless charging station operator "apps" that are as unpredictable as the lottery) and unreliable!!! If you don't have a private house with your own garage and charging station, then using an electric car in many cases becomes very problematic and turns into a real pain in the ass...
Unfortunately, For an ordinary working person, the only economical form of car transport is an old second-hand, smoky diesel or petrol car of simple design. Today's modern internal combustion cars are overgrown with so many "comfort devices" that as they get older, maintenance turns into a bottomless "money pit". More and more often in Latvia I meet people who say: "The government will take my old diesel from the late 90s only from my cold hands. Those old cars just work...and don't ruin your family budget, but these new "modern" cars are expensive, unreliable junk... Compare how much it costs to repair modern car"s fancy LED adaptive lights when the car is out of warranty... and compare it to the repair of an old diesel from 1980s...New "luxury" cars are unreliable and their maintenance costs are nightmarish...!!!

Binance and its chief executive Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to criminal charges for anti-money laundering and violations of US sanctions under a sweeping deal with the US Department of Justice. The deal, which will allow the company to continue to operate, will also see Zhao step down as CEO. Binance will pay a $4.3 billion fine.
As well as leaving his role as CEO, Zhao will also pay $200 million in fines as part of the settlement. He appeared earlier today in court in Seattle to plead guilty and faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
In court documents, Binance was charged with money laundering violations, US sanctions violations, and conspiracy to conduct an unlicensed money transmitting business. Binance admitted that it had failed to prevent and report suspicious transactions made by terrorist organizations, including Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades, the Islamic State, and Al Qaeda.
“Binance became the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange in part because of the crimes it committed—now it is paying one of the largest corporate penalties in US history,” said US attorney general Merrick Garland.
The court filing states that Binance allowed transactions worth more than $890 million involving customers in Iran, a country against which the US has imposed strict financial sanctions. Binance also allowed transactions between US users and counterparts in other sanctioned jurisdictions, including Cuba, Syria and illegally occupied regions of Ukraine, the indictment says.
“Binance turned a blind eye to its legal obligations in the pursuit of profit. Its willful failures allowed money to flow to terrorists, cybercriminals, and child abusers through its platform,” said US Treasury secretary Janet Yellen. “Today’s historic penalties and monitorship to ensure compliance with U.S. law and regulations mark a milestone for the virtual currency industry.”
Zhao also “prioritized Binance’s growth and profits over compliance with US law,” the indictment alleges. He acknowledged the company operated in what he described “grey zone,” but instructed staff that it was “better to ask for forgiveness than permission,” the indictment states.
Richard Teng, currently head of regional markets at Binance, will take over as CEO. Teng was the CEO of Abu Dhabi Global Market, a financial regulator in the UAE. Teng is said to be a popular choice among Binance staff, according to sources.
“Binance is no longer a baby. It is time for me to let it walk and run. I know Binance will continue to grow and excel with the deep bench it has,” Zhao said in a post on X announcing Teng's appointment as CEO.
In the last year, Zhao had taken to responding to negative headlines on X, formerly Twitter, by posting “4”—a symbol he adopted to dismiss allegations made against the company as baseless FUD (shorthand for fear, uncertainty and doubt). But the DOJ investigation into Binance was an open secret in crypto circles, and Binance insiders say that staff have been anxiously waiting for charges to drop, amid a “general sense of doom.”
Binance is by far the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world by transaction volume, with around 40 percent of global market share, and is a major part of the infrastructure underpinning the crypto business.
The company also faces two civil lawsuits in the US, brought by the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), alleging, among other things, commingling of customer assets, anti-money-laundering violations, and artificially inflating trading volumes.

Is the Bitcoin mining network decentralized enough? Or do the big miners control a significant part of it? Here’s what the latest data says. Public Bitcoin Miners Control Around 28% Of The Total Hashrate In a new post on X, Bloomberg Intelligence market analyst Jamie Coutts discussed how the mining industry has evolved. The first thing Coutts talked about is what the share of the global Bitcoin hashrate is looking like between private and public miners. The “hashrate” here refers to the total computing power the miners have connected to the Bitcoin network. This metric can serve as a measure of the security of the blockchain, as more mining rigs being attached means a 51% hack is harder to perform. The security also depends, however, on how decentralized the hashrate is. A large amount of it being controlled by a single entity could make it easier to access all that hashrate, at least on paper. Now, here is the chart that the CMT has shared that breaks down the hashrate contributions of public and private miners connected to the BTC blockchain: How the Bitcoin global hashrate is divided among these two categories | Source: @Jamie1Coutts on X As displayed above, 28% of the total Bitcoin hashrate is owned by public miners, while the rest is under the control of private entities. While public companies control a notable segment of the hashrate, it’s not alarming (at least not yet). The fact that 72% of the hashrate is private does deal a blow to the FUD narrative that spreads around about the BTC network being centralized under the big public entities. “Small-scale miners remain critical to keeping the industry decentralized and more anti-fragile,” explains Coutts. “But for some countries, mining is outlawed or economically unfeasible.” Below is a chart from a recent CoinGecko report that shows how much the electricity costs to mine 1 BTC in different countries worldwide. The cost of BTC mining in various countries around the world | Source: @Jamie1Coutts on X The analyst notes that the Western nations leading the charge towards a transition to clean energy have some of the most expensive electricity. Thus, the solo miners in these countries are effectively priced out of mining the cryptocurrency. Here is a table that displays the top 10 most expensive nations in this metric in a more easy-to-digest format: Looks like Italy is on top of this list | Source: @Jamie1Coutts on X For the top nation on this list, which is Italy, a miner would end up incurring an electricity cost of $208,560 to mine just one token of the digital asset. The value of Bitcoin would need to rise multiple times over for the miner to break even. On the contrary, some smaller nations have quite cheap electricity costs, as the table below shows. Lebanon appears to be the cheapest country for mining BTC | Source: @Jamie1Coutts on X “But even where electricity prices are dirt cheap, there are risks of overloading fragile energy grids,” says the Bloomberg Intelligence analyst. “Not to mention, these countries are some of the most politically unstable on earth.” BTC Price Bitcoin had made a sharp move towards the $26,800 level earlier in the day, but it would appear that the recovery move has failed, as the asset has already returned to under $26,300. BTC has already retraced the recovery from the past day | Source: BTCUSD on TradingView Source

Bitcoin Network Surprises Analysts With Largest Block In Four Months
Tumblr media
An intriguing event occurred as the world's attention was fixated on whether Bitcoin would experience growth or decline at the start of February. The Bitcoin network recorded its largest block in the past four months. Preliminary investigations showed that the substantial transaction within the block went through without incurring fees, a rare occurrence. Reports indicate that Taproot Wizard, an NFT project, performed the transaction. The Bitcoin blockchain transmitted a unique NFT, sent as a full JPEG image, a surprising shift from its traditional, small data packets. A significant rise in data transmission marks this. Historically, block size limits have restricted the Bitcoin network's transaction capability and speed. The experimental NFT project, Taproot Wizard, links the recent NFT transaction to innovation on the Bitcoin blockchain. Bitcoin Core opposes NFT experiments due to concerns over more important block size requirements to accommodate NFT functionality. Bitcoin's block size remains unchanged, and larger blocks could lead to decreased security and diminished anti-censorship qualities for the network. Bitcoin has struggled to keep an upward trend since the start of this month, which coincided with a surge in the block size limit. Suspicions of a network attack attempt arose, and speculation triggered FUD, causing concern among investors. Related Reading | NEAR Protocol Sees Explosive Growth In January Furthermore, Bitcoin drops 5% from its YTD high of $24,258 to $23,129. Despite this, there's a good observation for the next price move. A possible golden cross forms as Bitcoin's 50-day moving average approaches a cross with the 200-day moving average from below, seen as a bullish signal. Market conditions sway the advantage towards either bulls or bears. Read the full article

This is a viewpoint editorial by Robert Warren, partner at Distributed Hash and service advancement at Upstream Data Inc. The layperson understands just one feature of Bitcoin mining-- it utilizes a lot of energy, which is bad This mind-virus, effectively spread out by the environment extremists and anti-Bitcoin street corner preachers (generally bring a proof-of-stake torch) is meant to be the death knell of our blossoming market. We utilize a great deal of energy, and utilizing energy is undoubtedly a awful thing It follows that we must be rejected, pursued and managed out of presence. We remain in an environment crisis, so as we all understand, the very best strategy is to set up solar on your roofing system, purchase a Tesla, closed down the coal and gas plants in your area, and argue anything except that is methodically racist. Proof-of-work is the opponent. This argument is, to the majority of affordable individuals who take pleasure in running their dishwashing machine and having the lights on in the evening, patently outrageous. But there is still that a person huge concern: "Doesn't Bitcoin mining still utilize a great deal of energy? And do not those computer systems block our garbage dumps the 2nd they end up being unprofitable?" If you discover yourself under the interrogation of the Bitcoin curious, needing to respond to for all of those megawatts we're taking in, there is one concern you must ask in reaction to, "Doesn't Bitcoin utilize a great deal of energy?" Yes, however which energy? Source: Author NOTE: Before we go any even more, let's draw a clear difference in between energy and electrical power. Energy originates from main sources like a gas well, or hydroelectric dam. These main sources are utilized to create electrical power, the secondary energy we make all over the world, sent out through high voltage wires and utilized to power our dishwashing machines. If you desire a resource to check out even more, appearance HERE NOTE TO THE NOTE: Today not all bitcoin miners are utilizing waste or excess energy. My assertion is that this is the instructions our market patterns over the long term, despite generation type, since basic supply and need drives miners to the most affordable priced energy. Which Energy Do Bitcoin Miners Use? As long as waste energy exists, Bitcoin mining exists and pays. Let me reiterate that for those of you in the back rows. As long as there is waste in energy production and supply chains, it will constantly pay to mine bitcoin, no matter hardware type, producer, age, place, anything Even well-regarded Bitcoin Mining FUD masters like Alex de Vries of Digiconomist stop working the most basic of financial analyses in the bitcoin mining area. That is, not comprehending supply and need. Which is why they release findings like, "A comparable vibrant eventually figures out the fate of ASIC-based mining gadgets as advances in ASIC chip performance lead to more effective gadgets that ultimately crowd out older, less effective innovation ... Because the technical life time of ASIC mining gadgets normally goes beyond the time period throughout which the gadget can perform its job successfully (McCook, 2018), the minute they end up being unprofitable identifies their life-span and the point at which they end up being electronic waste ... We display in this research study that the life-span of Bitcoin mining gadgets stays restricted to simply 1.29 years." So, we are to comprehend, that performance in the ASIC market is the single chauffeur of energy intake and e-waste produced? I'll conjure up Brandolini's Law (" The quantity of energy required to refute bullsh t is an order of magnitude larger than that required to produce it.") as my reasoning for not resolving the above straight, and will rather go over energy waste. By waste energy I indicate the numerous points throughout energy supply chains where energy is readily available to carry out work, however for one factor or another does not.
This takes different kinds throughout the marketplace, whether it's methane venting and flaring on oil and gas websites, wind farms, hydroelectric plants, atomic power plants, and solar farms powering down due to low need. Bitcoin mining is the supreme waste decrease tool, due to the fact that as long as waste exists in the energy sector, and it constantly will, there will constantly be a reward to mine Bitcoin with that energy, no matter ASIC type. (NOTE: If you are Alex de Vries, I require you to re-read that last sentence and reevaluate your 1.29 year quote for ASIC life expectancy.) Source: Author Source: Author The energy that deserves the least, is the energy that never ever makes it to market. The methane vented or flared on an oil well, the wind turbine that sits idle in a megafarm, the hydroelectric turbine that does not spin. When it comes to solar, you have production times that inequality need times, so excess capability goes unused midday. I.e., People turn lights on more when the sun goes down Bitcoin miners have no interest in your Science-Backed Turbo Grid ™, your political idealizations, or which all-star team you put together to form a research study council. Whether you desire 89% nuclear, 71% solar with Tesla Powerwalls, removal of nonrenewable fuel sources entirely or 93.7% hydro-power, is unimportant, we do not care. We are the everlasting free enterprise totally free representatives. We desire your waste and excess. We are the dung beetles of the energy sector. And currently the structure of this robust market is establishing. Rack, power circulation system and transformer knowledge for indoor operations, a range of containerized services created to secure miners in rugged Texas Summers and freezing Alberta Winters, half engine half datacenter chimeras birthed for the sole function of consuming gas, house mining black boxes that discard excess heat into your home throughout the winter season all exist. A secondary market in software application and hardware emerges in firmware, maker management, upkeep and life time extension. Everything is created around a single objective, the recognition and usage of the most affordable priced energy in the most effective method possible. That least expensive priced energy is not the electrical power you're utilizing to charge your iPhone, or enjoy Netflix-- it lives away and away in a substation with excess capability, or a gas plant with underutilized turbines. In this method Bitcoin mining brings a market to all over there isn't one in the energy supply chain. At almost every point in the energy supply chain there is some waste or excess that is much better priced and taken in than left idle. So when your Bitcoin curious buddies next corner you to inquire about those dreadful megawatts that the bitcoin miners are utilizing, your very first reply might most proficiently be: Which energy do those Bitcoin miners utilize? This is a visitor post by Rob Warren. Viewpoints revealed are completely their own and do not always show those of BTC Inc or Bitcoin Magazine Read More
