🔎 YA Under the Radar 7 🔍
I have been working on this list in the series all year 😂 it just took me that long to read a decent amount of underrated YA - but I got there in the end and I'm pretty happy with the recs on this list 🥰
there are rainbow flags next to LGBT+ rep, wheelchair symbols next to disability rep and koalas next to Australia YA simply because there's a lot of that on this particular list
so take a gander and maybe consider picking up a title or two (or ten) in 2024 to support lesser-known authors and books 😊

Hi I saw your post about the phrase "se ei ole mistään kotoisin" and the book you linked looks interesting I just might get it 👀 I have an Amazon gift card that I want to spend on something fun and I was wondering if you have any Finnish book recommendations!! Either with translation or in simpler Finnish works too :D
Omg!
Ngl you were in my mind when I was writing that book recommendation :3 I hope you will enjoy it if you end up getting it! But keep in mind that because it is humorous it is not a deeb dive but rather scracthing the surface.
I will have to do a confession here that I don't read too much of finnish literature (something that I need to fix)
A general tip: try adding "selkokirja" (or selkosuomi/selkokielinen) to your search. Selkokirjat are books writen, or re-writen into simpler finnish than the original. (yle's website has a section "selkouutiset" where you find news in selkosuomi
Sorry, I wrote you a really long list, but maybe more is better so you can pick and choose.
-The moomin books by Tove Janson! Pick any one, Comet in Moominland and Midsommer Madness are my faves. They were originally written in swedish because Tove was swedish-speaking finn, so finnish editions are translations. There's also comics.
-Not Before Sundown by Johanna Sinisalo. English translation (and many other) is available of this one. This book is about a gay man called Enkeli (angel) who takes a baby troll into his house and tries to take care of it. But troll is part of a wild nature and the night. From tiny snippets we follow how this turns out. Finlandia Prize winner.
-The Unkown Soldier by Väinö Linna. This is THE Book in Finland. A finnish classic and the nation's "collective memory" of the Continuation war against Russia. Many movies made out of this one. According to wikipedia there is a new english translation from 2015, which is better than the previous but some of the localization has been critizied.
-The Purge by Sofi Oksanen. A very dark and depressing book set in the soviet occupation of Estonia. Haven't read this one yet but it is widely popular. Check wikipedia for more info.
-Ja hän huutaa: Splatterpunk-Antologia (Aaave Taajuus, 2014) I took you like violence and blood, well here's a collection of splatterunk short stories writen by different finnish horror authors. Havent read all of them yet, but the ones I have read have been... good in a way of "I wanted to be disgusted and I got what I wanted". Let me tell you, these shortstories are propably the most gruesome shit writen in finnish horror scene. All warnigns ably. You honestly just need to read the backcover. It's only available in finnish but I don't think the language will be too complex.
-Pyöveli by Anneli Kanto. Only available in finnish but it's a humortictic, grotesk story set in medieval Finland following the son of an executioner, a newly (un)happily married judge in Vaasa and a peasant determined to get a new, succesfull life.
- Magdalena Hai writes speculative finnish fiction
Some recomendations by my friends: -Ilkka Remes is a thriler writer but I couldn't find any of his works translated
-Childrens books: Risto Räppääjä -books (K makes references to him in few songs!) and Heinähattu ja Vilttitossu.
-Kepler62 by Timo Parvela (Scifi)
-Varjot by Timo Parvela (fantasy)
-Hirviöasiakaspalvelu, kuinka voin auttaa by Anni Nupponen (monster customer service), the publisher is Osuuskumma
-Leena Krohn writes horror/fantasy
Also some classic finnish books are:
-The seven brothers by Aleksis Kivi, the first novel writen completely in finnish. I read this one, at first it was fun but near the ending draged on way too long, sori Aleksi. You will see this one being referenced all the time.
-The Egyptian (Sinuhe egyptiläinen) by Mika Waltari.
-Minna Canth's plays like Työmiehen Vaimo or Annaliisa. They deal with women's position in the victorian era.

i think i’ve lost it since, but a bookseller in nola gave me a map of all the bookstores in the french quarter. i remember arcadian books being one of my favorites, though all are really lovely.
plus on royal street (which i ofc call the rue royale in my head) there’s a really nice stationery store (papier plume) plus a perfume store (bourbon french parfums). if y’all have been in the area, you might have already found these places, but they’re worth checking out if you haven’t yet and you’re still there.
hope you guys enjoy! nola is one of my favorite cities for many reasons including anne rice.
i don’t know how much longer you guys are staying but if you’ll be there this week for spring break i would be remiss if i didn’t mention some events. theres a ton of burlesque and cabaret shows going on this week including the lieder and lingerie opera burlesque on wednesday and the storyville burlesque show on thursday. i’ve never been to those specific ones so i don’t know if they’re the best or anything but the first one makes me think of tvc and the opera thing and the storyville one incorporates history into the show so its pretty relevant to iwtv tv. friday theres the st patricks day bar crawl and the st patricks day balcony party + a lot of other parties in the clubs. some of these you can only get the tickets on eventbrite or facebook though which is annoying.
We're back now and we saw your asks!! Thank you both so much for the reccs! We made it to all the Royal St shops and they were fantastic! Especially the perfume place, Sofi and I were super excited to visit that one the whole trip!
Unfortunately our schedule was pretty booked up so we didn't make it any specific shows, but personally if I ever go back that's at the top of my list! I'd love to spend more time in Storyville, we didn't get super far outside of the middle of French Quarter very often, but what we did see of it was really cool! I feel like we could've easily spent another eight days just in NOLA

‘t Centrum in Westerlo, Belgium: Kamp C circular office building
The province of Antwerp, July 7 2020 – Kamp C
Province of Antwerp – The most circular office building of the Low Countries can be found at Kamp C in Belgium
Kamp C, the living lab of the Province of Antwerp for sustainability and innovation in the construction industry, and a previously selected consortium of seven companies have recently completed ‘t Centrum in Westerlo (Belgium). This is the first completely circular office building in Flanders. The three-storey building has a total surface area of 2,400 m2. The building’s high level of circularity is remarkable. It has been entirely constructed from reusable materials and can thus be completely disassembled and rebuilt elsewhere. The builders used innovative materials, applications, techniques and new business models throughout.
photograph : persfoto
Kamp C is strongly committed to the transition in the construction industry, from traditional processes to circular building. ‘t Centrum stimulates the building’s users as well as people and businesses around it to use raw materials differently. Waste streams were reduced to a minimum and investments made in a sustainable energy supply and water management. The team has also paid a lot of attention to raising awareness and encouraging behavioural change, in addition to reducing the energy requirements of the building’s users. The experiences with alternative forms of partnership as well as the financing and business models will be shared with the public. Kamp C’s intention with ‘t Centrum is to show that circular building is possible, in addition to nudging the construction industry.
photo : persfoto
The building, with its well-thought-through circular design and conscious choice of materials, techniques and innovative business models, is a catalyst for circular construction in Flanders and beyond. ‘t Centrum has been designed according to a modular, standardised grid. With this concept, the consortium hopes to demonstrate that the building can be easily moved and expanded.
Photos below by architectuurfoto
“Major players in the office market, such as Immobel, predict that the demand for sustainable buildings is set to increase in the coming years. We hope to get as many construction companies as we can on the bandwagon with ‘t Centrum. This benefits both the climate, as well as employment in the construction industry, one of the economic spearhead sectors in the Province of Antwerp”, says Kathleen Helsen, member of the Provincial Executive responsible for Work and Economy and the President of Kamp C.
“It is obvious that we need to take a more future-proof approach to construction. That is why we built ‘t Centrum”, says Emiel Ascione, project manager at Kamp C.
Alexander Van Haesbroeck (Kamp C), Jan Laga (Tenerga), Sarah Theeuws (West Architectuur), Kathleen Helsen (Kamp C), Jurgen Vervoort (Beneens), Stefan Belmans (Streng-th), Teun Depreeuw (Muurtuin/Ecoschelp), Jeroen Bruyndonckx (TEN), Maarten Puls (Kamp C), Brecht Beirinckx (Streng-th), Chris Baert, Sofie Torfs, Anne Goidts (Kamp C), Joeri Beneens (Beneens), Marijke Aerts, Kelly Penen, Emiel Ascione (Kamp C) © Kamp C & Compagnie Fotografie
Innovative applications
The office building has standardised modular walls, floors, columns and beams. The timber frame elements use GL and CLT. The result is a building that is easy to adapt, expand and renovate with components that are easy to recover and thus retain their value in the long term. Building with a deposit system is now possible. All the materials used are listed in a Building Information Model (BIM) to which the materials passport is directly linked. BIM is a digital model that combines all the data of a building and is used to facilitate collaboration between all the construction partners.
’t Centrum uses an innovative building management system. The system contributes to the lowest possible, optimised energy consumption, but is also used to manage preventive maintenance and extend the building’s lifespan. The building management system is fitted with wireless sensors, eliminating many metres of cable in the process and making it easier to expand or downsize the installation.
The Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) shows that the building has a very low environmental footprint. Compared with similar-sized conventional buildings, it saves approx. 800 tons of CO2 (comparable with the capturing of approx. 70 hectares/100 football pitches of forest).
A BTES field is used to heat and cool the building Cementless screed and foundations were especially developed for ‘t Centrum. The cementless foundations were produced by the URBCON Interreg project. By applying the URBCON concrete composition in these foundation elements, 22,500 kilos of secondary materials were used and 13,000 kg less CO2 emitted, compared with conventional foundations. The floor is made from shell insulation and a green wall will purify grey water. The furniture of the information centre at Kamp C was reused and upcycled and incorporated in the offices.
Circular economy
The team reused wood from Hangar 26, a former events venue in Antwerp, for the façade cladding. Antwerp-based sheltered workshop Kunnig gave the wood a total makeover. The wooden beams were given a second lease of life as façade cladding in ‘t Centrum.
Circular showcase
The staff of Kamp C has since moved into its new offices in ‘t Centrum. The building is a showcase for circular building, serving as inspiration for new initiatives and innovation. Kamp C wants to showcase as many materials and techniques as possible in ‘t Centrum. You will soon be able to consult additional information online or on-site.
You can also take a guided tour of ‘t Centrum. To book a tour, send an email to [email protected] or book a tour via the website from June 10th www.kampc.be.
Project partners
‘t Centrum was built by a consortium, named Kamp Circulair. It consists of seven companies: Beneens bouw en interieur, West Architectuur, Streng-th, Muurtuin, Tenerga, TENgroup, and VITO.
