Happy Monday, All!

Here's a page of sketches I did when working on Animal Crackers. I hated my handwriting (still do... but I'm okay with using in my journals now) so I scanned in my sketch page and typed my words in photoshop.

Looking at it now... it's cold. Impersonal.

It took me doing this for the film to realize that I wasn't journaling for show. I need to journal for ME.

But, I was scared that people would think my handwriting "ruined" the journal pages.

I wound up sketching all of the cast and all of my experiences, but there were just empty boxes where words WOULD go...

I wish I would have just put my thoughts in there. In my own handwriting.

It would have felt more real. More genuine.

BUT... It's a lesson I learned and hopefully I'll get to make another film soon and do it the way I want to... with my own handwriting.

favourite colour: At the moment, its dark green. It reminds me of the forest and I find it quite cosy, I love my green cardigans 💚 ~

currently watching: The Apothecary Diaries. My boyfriend found this anime and I love it, i'm only 5 or 6 eps in, but its beautiful and fun :) Its set in China, about a girl called Maomao who ends up as a lady in waiting and official food taster for one of the Emperor's Concubines.

sweet/savoury/spicy: I prefer savoury. I used to polish off so much chocolate, but now it takes me months to get through it after birthdays etc. I am addicted to Ritz crackers, give me a box and I go feral. I don't like alot of spice or bitter tastes.

relationship status: In a relationship, for 13 years. I'm surprised I haven't scared him off yet 🤣💖

current obsession: Too many to count. I have a handful of Hyper Obsessions, these include One Piece (of course!), Good Omens, Dragon Age Inquisition and I am also Guinea Pig mad.

last thing you googled: Whether or not The Witcher, Netflix, was getting cancelled. I loved the first two seasons but I don't think I even made it through the first ep of Season 3 sadly.

What is he watching?: Probably Something he's already seen. I know this might sound insulting because it is, but he's really basic looking for someone in a fantasy game, so I think he would enjoy Riverdale.

What is he eating?: Well, if he was still pretending to be a gamer he would eat some chips and drink soda, but someone with abs like that lives on protein so he's eating chicken strips.

I could image a film working today, what with all the adult animated shows like Legend of Vox Machina, Hellova Boss, Bojack horseman, and Harley Quinn, and I think that's what netflix was going for, when I look at Jamie's storyboards for cracker island it feels way more grittier and scary, I'd love the idea that gorillaz was making a documentary(mockumentary in our world) but was hijacked by celebrity zombies (or in cracker islands case celebrity cult members) throughout the documentary, and its worked kinda like a parody of a found footage horror film (think of the Scooby Doo blair witch project parody but more mature). but unfortunately we'll never get a film because Netflix is just like any of capitalistic money hungry corporation that will gut there animation team for a quick buck. (i have the strong opinion that a gorillaz film or even an album with heavy lore hasn't worked not just because they had too many ideas but because of capitalism too)

the climate's better for a gorillaz animation now compared to 2003, yeah. and i completely forgot about the mockumentary angle though they were throwing out a ton of ideas... i'd like that more tbh! gorillaz has a good amount of b-horror film references it can work. though flashing cult imagery in relation to hollywood or celeb worship culture and making an entire movie about it requires a very fine line to be tread.

i do agree with your strong opinion. they have a lot of ideas and not a way to fund it properly, and asking tv or movie companies for help is a surefire way to get your project manhandled by corporations who want to dumb it down and make it palatable for everyone else. which, they avoided with dreamworks via backing out, and were saved i guess by netflix dropping them. i really do want to hear what the script was since they were in the middle of writing it and celebrity harvest got to have some tidbits dropped here and there. damon said cracker island was created after the cancellation so it wouldn't be a wild guess to say it was related to whatever new plot they had... certainly explains the story-book level information dumping. BUT that's me making shit up rn as i wait for info

and on the heavy lore-based album part, i don't know! it could work or it couldn't. i personally think they work better in an episodic style, maybe you can see how it railroads the characters if they go down a heavy lore style, it can be stifling for a band like gorillaz where the style changes when new ideas and world events crop up which is why i prefer the band stuff to lore stuff... of course referencing past events/history between the members is always great, but it gets kind of heavy handed when the crazy events of plastic beach occurred and its been like, 3 albums of 2D and murdoc having tension but bouncing back to being friends then suddenly referencing the kidnapping and shit, and since PB didn't feature much of noodle and russel talking they've stagnated since then. if they can avoid that kind of stuff i'd be all for it. (it's hard to sum up my feelings on recent stuff between 2D and murdoc because they like don't hang out as much anymore

I'm seeing the conversation of shows having shorter seasons. Where old series would have 16-20 episode seasons, 8 episodes seem to be the standard now. Series are missing "Filler" episodes.

SIDE NOTE: Western media never had "filter" episodes. Filler episodes is a term originating around anime, where animes based off of mangas would catch up to the current story line and would have to produce episodes to buffer the time. Think vamping during live shows, noise until the next band or act is ready.

There is a server lack of non plot driven episodes.

Some series do not need them, they are written in a way where that the audience has all the information they need. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to know the complete backstory of every single character. Some things can and should be left up to the imagination.

'The Last of Us' is a great example of this. We connected to the characters and story with zero "Filler" episodes. Every episode was too push the plot forward.

Controversialy, Hazbin Hotel also did not need these episodes. It is structured like a Broadway musical so it's storytelling reflected that. You don't just stop the story of a play to have two characters have date night unless that moved the plot forward.

Other series would benefit from these episodes. As much as I love 'The Mandalorian' and 'Loki', both series would benefit with longer seasons. Choices and moments felt rush and you either didn't connect to characters or they felt really out of character.

The reason for shorter seasons could come down to several things.

Networks/Streaming services will only pay for 8-10 episodes

Show creators, fearing cancellation, condensed their stories down

Audience comprehension of media literacy

I believe in some article it was revealed that Netflix has technical specifications for every single one of their shows down to what cameras can be used. So it's not out of the realm of possibilities that networks/streaming services would limit how many episodes you could write. With limited episodes come with limited storytelling, You now have to figure out which pieces are important and which pieces you can leave out.

Series are also getting canceled in shelved almost everyday on these platforms. So creators knowing this try to squeeze as much as they can in a small format thinking it's better to tell any story whether it's good or bad. Just hoping they can make it to a second season to "fix" things.

MEDIA LITERACY. There is a growing number of audiences that if something is more complex than a saltine cracker it confuses the everliving fuck out of them.

Villains must be villainous in heroes must be heroic. Do not make my villain have a sympathetic moment. The hero can't be seen as an asshole they're the hero. The plot isn't going in a straightforward line, confusion. Why are they on this side quest this has nothing to do with the main mission, even though later on it will. How Am I supposed to know those characters are together, they haven't had sex or kissed !?

And if audience are reviewing something bad because they couldn't understand it networks/streaming services are going to shift gears to reflect that. Meaning complex in slow burning stories are out the window. They want simple fast pace easily consumable shows.

Until networks/streaming services stop thinking only of money, and show respect for those creating their series AND audiences start comprehending things above a first grade reading level we're not going to see any changes.

Networks/streaming services make money off of these series and they're just consumable enough to get people talking about it.

If you're wanting complex long form series your best bet is going to be indie project and companies. Those who are in it for the art.

Hi Scott! Hope you're having a wonderful day! My question is: Is there a piece of art you have created that stands out to you as one of your best works?

Hi. I don't know if it's my BEST work... but the Animal Crackers movie poster is one of my favorites.

And, I think the reason why is because... a year before I painted this... I had NEVER used gouache paints before.

I decided I wanted to make the movie poster in gouache so it had an "old time movie poster" feel and I taught myself how to paint with gouache by just painting a little portrait every day.

For a year.

This painting wound up taking me about 12 weeks, I think? It's really big and I had SO much fun.
