Papa Meowth AU: Humans With Pokemon Powers
So obviously we already know that in canon there are people who have the ability to use Pokemon moves-heck, Ash is one of them. Well in the Papa Meowth AU (as well as other Pokemon stories I come up with) I’m expanding it to include all the different types.
Fighting and Normal- Aura Manipulators, with the Aura Guardians as the most well known group associated with the ability. While it’s fallen into obscurity, almost everyone has the potential to use at least a little aura since it’s literally life force, which is why someone can get hit by a hyper beam and only get thrown back instead of vaporized. It’s also the most versatile of the bunch, since if you know what you’re doing you can modify the properties of the projected Aura and learn moves from other Types.
Psychic- Psychics, obviously. In modern day it’s the most widespread and well-known out of all of them.
Ghost- Witches. It’s more-or-less the only one that can’t be used directly by humans, since they’re still alive. Instead, they utilize potions and rituals that produce various effects. It’s mainly centered around the idea of sacrifice, namely the sacrifice of materials, time or effort in the case of the more ethically sound methods, though there are...other paths.
Dark and Poison- Ninja, though these days it’s extremely rare to encounter one that can pull off actual moves instead of just conventional Ninjutsu.
Dragon- Dragon Tamers/Riders. Like with Ninjas not many modern tamers or riders can pull off moves on their own, but there are quite a few who can understand Dragon Types, either Empathically or through straight-up translation.
Grass- Druids and Acolytes of Celibi. The latter are also able to learn time manipulation, though usually only clairvoyance and reading the past of an area or object.
Ground, Rock and Steel- Earthshapers, which were wiped out almost entirely by the King of Pokelantis during his attempts to control Ho-oh and take over the world. When they were still around the majority of them tended to specialize in one or two of the relevant types, but the most powerful could use all three.
Fire- If there was ever a specific group for it, it’s been lost to history. Currently anyone with an affinity for fire is either focused on a specific species (like Laramie Ranch and the Charific Valley) or absorbed into the Dragon clans.
Fairy- Mages. A bit like Witches, but since they’re not using magic based on death they can actually use it directly, which makes things get...Weird.
Water and Ice- There’s never been any specific group, mainly just sailors who have more sea in their blood than they think, hikers who can go higher and longer than normal, and Gym Leaders who are just a bit too in their element. It’s a very subtle sort of power.
Electric, Bug and Flying. The ones I’ve got nothing for. I would assume that there are people who can use these types of moves but I have no idea what kind of groups there’d be for them.
Shadow- Just like Pokemon, powered humans can have their energy corrupted by pain and brainwashing, and it ain’t pretty.

*Sigh*  The things that can happen on this goddamn site...
This post I made about the five most narcissistic evil team bosses in Pokemon has seen pretty positive reception and a good amount of engagement with likes and reblogs, but I kind of knew that eventually it’d draw some strange responses and ire. And sure enough, some weirdo reblogged it just to throw out an accusation of “ableism!”, saying that my post was “demonizing” NPD and those who have it.
Nevermind that the post is very upfront about distinctions between different forms of narcissism at the start (generic NPD is not the same as Malignant and Pathological NPD, and is not always even destructive or harmful in any serious way), and that I covered how Giovanni manages his narcissism in a mature, graceful and even healthy way, and how Maxie and Lusamine are not beyond the capability to learn better and do better in spite of their narcissism.
I am also a fan of some unambiguously narcissistic characters, ranging from Asuka Langley Sohryu to Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Hell, I’ve vouched for Miki Goddamn Kawai from A Silent Voice being not written off as a lost cause beyond forgiveness and the friendship of others, and she has got all the hallmarks of Covert Narcissism!
An analysis/opinion post about fictional narcissistic antagonists is not ableism, nor is it meant to stigmatize any real life people who may suffer from some form of NPD. But I will say again what I said to this person and stand by, just to make it clear: I have little to no sympathy for Pathological Malignant Narcissists. Life in the real world has been made so much worse by the words, actions, and continued existence of such people in recent years, so do forgive me if I’m not keen on looking at evil, ego-driven assholes who cause widespread suffering for so many others just to further enrich and elevate themselves as poor victims or talking nice about them even in fictional narratives.

“the sausages in pokemon are made from milktank!! people eat pokemon!!” posts are so dumb because while yea, pokemon do hunt eachother in the wild,
This is a universe where theres widespread, cheap, easily accessible devices that warp spacetime allowing living creatures to safely live and exit from pocket dimensions stored in plastic spheres.
And I genuinely have no idea WHAT kind of civilization would have figured out how to do that before inventing tofu and like, synthetic meats that provide proper nutrition and taste nice. Especially in a world where the cows can learn how to create blizzards, shoot lazers, earthquakes, tsunamis and thunderstorms by touching a cd.

FEATURE: How Does Christmas Work In The Pokémon World?
Tumblr media
  In the world of TV, Christmas-themed episodes are not a rare thing. Nearly every long-running series imaginable has at least one episode centered around December 25th and all of the hijinks and misery that can occur on it, and that includes the Pokémon anime. But while it's established that Christmas is an annual event in Ash Ketchum's world, how exactly does it work? Well today, thanks to my deeply necessary investigative skills, we're gonna find out.
  So, first off, it's important to keep in mind that in the Pokémon world, Christmas is a purely secular holiday. It carries with it a lot of the values that we've imbued into it, but it has no religious ties or foundation. Secondly, Santa Claus definitely exists here, both as a figure of childhood whimsy and as a flesh and blood gift giver that is, quite frankly, terrible at his job. Santa appears in one (now banned) Pokémon episode and three different Pikachu shorts — three of those four either features one of his Pokémon getting lost or getting sick in a way that he is entirely unprepared for. I'm not saying that Santa doesn't need some help from time to time. I just think that if you're traveling around the world and your flying Stantler gets feverish in a way that only a certain berry can cure, you might consider carrying said berry.
Tumblr media
  All images via Pokemon TV
  This flying Stantler also brings up another aspect of the Pokémon world: magic. To pull Santa's sleigh, he employs either a team of Ponyta or Stantler, neither of which are Pokémon that typically know how to fly. So Santa is definitely using some kind of sorcery to make this happen. However, Pikachu could not typically use the move "Surf," but in games like Pokémon Yellow and episodes like "The Pi-Kahuna," we learn that with enough practice, items, and (possibly) wizardry, Pikachu can learn to ride waves with the best of them. So perhaps it's a situation like that? Regrettably, "Flying Ponyta" has not yet attained the same status as "Surfing Pikachu" in Pokémon lore, but give it time.
  We also know, thanks to a line in the episode "Island of the Giant Pokémon," that Team Rocket's James received his Koffing as a Christmas present. Now, it's unclear whether Santa gave him the gift or he received it from a friend or family member or Giovanni, but we at least know that like in our own world, sometimes new pets are given as Christmas presents. How they are hidden to make them a surprise remains uncertain — considering that, if it was in the same house as James, he would've definitely heard it shouting "KOFFING" every few seconds — but if Santa gives them, he likely uses the same technology that goes into PokeBalls to keep them hidden, mechanics that in the Pokémon world are fairly widespread and barely proprietary.
Tumblr media
    Finally, Santa is so approachable in the world of Pokémon that gifting is a two-way street. A song on the truly bizarre Pokémon Christmas Bash album called "I'm Giving Santa a Pikachu for Christmas" details Professor Oak's plans to return the favor to Santa and grant him a Pikachu for all of his hard work and the joy he's spread. Oak's lines indicate that Pikachu will be both best friend and utility as it supplies his sleigh and workshop with "Pika Power." Oak also makes puns about Santa finding Pikachu "rather shocking," the pun he made just after Pikachu shocked Ash Ketchum for the first time, a jolt so devastating that some fan theories state that it put Ash into a coma. That Professor Oak will arrive in his living room on Christmas morning to find Santa Claus electrocuted and unconscious on his floor seems to be of no serious concern.
  And where does Santa live? In the banned "Holiday Hi-Jynx" episode, he dwells in the North Pole, which unlike the landmass under the South Pole, is a region of Arctic sea ice. Does this mean that the Pokémon world is subject to the same climate concerns as the earth? Topography, biomes, and the relationships between various ecosystems are an important part of games like Ruby and Sapphire, but the fact that in the Pokémon world, the North Pole is also located on a massive chunk of ice makes me wonder how much of a continuous issue it is.
Tumblr media
    Along with Santa, many of the traditions of Christmas carry over to the Pokémon world, including holiday parties, visiting home, and the idea of "mistletoe" being a sort of romantic elixir. Not only does Brock ask Santa to put Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny under the mistletoe in the titular song "Pokémon Christmas Bash," but Ash and Misty have an entire duet called "Under the Mistletoe" in which they both desperately pine for one another. And from the Pikachu shorts and a Meowth song entitled "Nobody Don't Like Christmas," we see that Pokémon also partake in seasonal traditions and find the holiday to be important, anthropomorphizing them another step further.
  Regardless of whether or not you celebrate Christmas, I hope you're happy and healthy this winter. And I hope you continue to watch Pokémon and many, many other wonderful series. Because as we all know, anime is truly the gift that never stops giving.

2019 in review in review:
A few years ago I started tracking yearly goals, books read, movies watched etc in a year, along with overview blurbs, in private posts. End of 2019/beginning of 2020 I was really frazzled/burned out about a lot of stuff and just never finished up making the thing. 8 months later, got the urge to read back what I’d got done, then figured I’d maybe go ahead and see about finishing.
Media tracking below the break. thoughts/blurbs written in 2020 italicized, 2019 not.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~_____________________________~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Didn’t do so hot on explicit personal goals, but had a lot of stuff go ok around them this year.
School’s been fine/better than fine.
Job’s probably the biggest failing. Still with same job, haven’t made the firm moves to jump off, dragging my feet too much on exploring stuff w/ Columbia/NASA GISS.
Did not get better with covid, lol
Dating life still non-existent, but I’ve registered on apps, gotten more comfortable with selfies, improved general social life dramatically, been flirted with, updated my wardrobe, and generally started to get comfortable accepting that I’m a hot person.
Somehow got extremely better during covid.
Books
Grant (finished)
We stan a taurus legend
Guy was good at exactly one job, and was fortunate enough to have been in the right place/right time to get to do it.
Mort (discworld)
Definitely best discworld I’ve gotten to so far.
Don Quixote p. II
Really entertaining in a way that part 1 wasn’t; I was shocked how much the meta element landed for me.
Consider the Lobster (DFW collection)
had zero context on who DFW is/was when I read, and still don’t exactly tbh. Wanted to wait for a pause in The Discourse before diving into more of him, but dunno if I’m ever going to get that.
Crime and Punishment (revisited)
Weirdly didn’t get much more out of this than I did the first time I’d read it
Better Than Sex (HST Gonzo papers)
Xerox/widespread fax accessibility opening citizen access to mass media in a manner really reminiscent of what social media would go on to do at a much larger scale. Has a much more deliberate narrative arc than the other gonzo papers collections, also has that excellent HST richard nixon eulogy
The Brothers Karamazov
SPQR
Slouching Towards Bethlehem (Didion collection)
Pet Sematary
Not my favorite King, but not bad
Sourcery (discworld)
still funny/charming, but Mort really made clear/reminded me how much the hapless sadsack Rincewind mold of protagonist wears on me after a while.
The Devil's Teeth
My Year of Rest and Relaxation
Liked it a lot more once I realized it was doing a Fear and Loathing thing.
Homage to Catalonia
This should be the Orwell that gets taught in schools. Make it a followup to All Quiet on the Western Front or something, jeez.
Lyndon Johnson I
Having now finished all of them, this one’s probably the least-interesting but sets up a bunch of important context that the others still then feel the need to retread.
The Razor's Edge
Recommended to me as a “white guy discovers eastern mysticism” book, but also is more interesting in its treatment of that than I’d expected (helps it was written in the 40s).
Cat's Cradle
There’s a part in this where Vonnegut’s making fun of people who try to bond with strangers over being Hoosiers, and my dumbass immediate thought was “ooh, Vonnegut’s a hoosier? Me too!”
Lyndon Johnson II
Robert Caro felt compelled to apologize for spending so much words lionizing Coke Stevens, segregationist opponent to Johnson’s senate run. His goal was pretty clearly to show lbj’s lack of campaign charisma by contrast, definitely definitely overcommitted in his own narrativising.
Libra
I want to go back to this after reading some more De Lillo.
Gravity's Rainbow
This book absolutely kicked my ass
Overstuffed and referential in a specific way that really keeps me hooked in instead of put off. When I learn about some piece of cultural context that I retroactively recognize as being referenced in this, I want to go back and reread the entire thing.
From Caligari to Hitler
Kind of fails both as film criticism and cultural analysis, but absolutely made me want to run for the hills when considering current relationship between mainstream movies and demands of pop culture.
I took a class on Weimar cinema in undergrad that I now realize was probably biting pretty heavily from this and never once referenced it.
Movies
Venom
Movie itself is not as fun as the Tom Hardy hype coverage. PG13 was the absolute worst space to aim for, PG- or R- versions of this could have been a blast.
Harryhauser Argonauts
Was tripping when I put this on, and it was all kinds of fun.
2001: a Space Oddyssey
First time seeing this, all-time classic for a reason!
A Good American (the NSA doc)
Dr. Strangelove
Mel Brooks History of the World p. I
Not my favorite Brooks, best joke was at the beginning.
In Bruges
Had been a while since I saw a proper dark comedy.
Spiderverse
Fukkin awesome!
Visually great, and extremely better than usual superhero stuff for being aimed at PG instead of PG-13.
You Only Live Twice
Highlander (Revisited)
I watched The Old Guard on netflix recently and it mostly just made me wish I was watching Highlander instead, because at least Highlander knows exactly how goofy it is
Moonraker
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Much like The Shining, I though this would have been 100% spoiled for me by cultural osmosis, but turns out it wasn’t, and even the scenes I had seen *totally landed* in-context still.
Kung Fu Hustle
Ichi the Killer
Really gross, really fun
Matrix Reloaded (watched thru highway scene) (Revisited)
The highway scene was not nearly as cool as I remembered it being.
John Wick 3*
Probably dumbest plot of all of them, best choreography. I like how every single fight had its own distinct flavor. “Knife museum fight” “horse fight” “halle berry dogs fight”
Akira
A classic
Pet Sematary * (ugh, bad)
Why can’t john lithgow be in good movies anymore
The Revenant
MCU Spiderman
Fuck this was awful.
MCU Spiderman 2*
Really weird, complete Rorschach Test of a movie: it’d be totally valid to read into this that global warming is Fake News, for instance.
Lmao this was completely awful
Rites
Dredd (non-stallone)
oh hey Lena Headey’s in this
For All Mankind!
Watched in honor of moon landing anniversary
Lion King *
Watched it way too stoned, was like dark side of the moon + wizard of oz except instead it’s a lion king script reading + nature footage edited for lip syncing.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood *
Many scenes of very long setups for really stupid shaggy dog jokes, which sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. I do kinda want to rewatch now knowing more about manson, which I knew pretty much nothing about beforehand
Blowout
A good john lithgow movie
also I think I like travolta in things.
Lord of War
A Good cage movie
I like when Eamon Walker shows up in stuff.
Taxi Driver
A classic
Snowpiercer
Watched in a bar with only one speaker working, which is the correct way to watch. Weirder and funnier than I thought it was going to be, which still doesn’t make it good, but,
dbz big green dub
Exorcist III
Brad Dourif just tearing it apart
Deep Red (argento)
Suspiria (1977)
Watched the remake in 2020, which was ok, but nothing tops the Goblin score.
Elf Bowling
Thanks, Gnome
Parasite *
Interesting to me that this one seems poised to hang around people’s good esteem for a while
TV
FMA: B
Rick & Morty
Saw some episodes, generally pretty funny, some misanthropy that’s probably appealing to a certain type of teen al a something like House, but ultimately I don’t totally Get the intensity of discourse about it.
Leterkenny
Mob Psycho 100
One Punch Man
Deadwood
Watchmen
Only watched like half of it. Was playing around with a lot of hefty imagery/thematics, but didn’t really seem ready to rise above playing (tho also I feel like it’s weird on some level to *expect* them to rise above that in the first place)
Music
New Avantasia
HEALTH/ show
lol remember concerts
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard/ show
Just learned about King Gizz in 2019 and got completely obsessed with them. I don’t tend to expand my music selection very readily, and a lot of what I currently *do* know is old/inactive stuff, so it was/is incredibly exciting to have an active group with good momentum just immediately win me over like that.
Mistimed the edibles and ended up with a really good finale and a really long subway ride home.
New Yeasayer
Sad they split up
Steve Wilson Tull remixes
Aqualung’s a good album and the sound mixing’s kinda bad, so I liked this project.
Stonefield
Opened for Gizzard. Really good as studying music
Video Games
Civ VI: Gathering Storm
Hades
Turns out Supergiant’s design proclivities all work *extremely well* on a roguelike
Baba is You
Untitled Goose Game
Cute, if maybe a bit overhyped
finally fucking finished Pillars of Eternity
Had fun with it, but too long, and really dour for how long it is.
Pillars II
Kinda drifted off it eventually, but I do genuinely like that the flavor of the fantasy is colonial era rather than medieval.
There’s a Balancing Bastard Factions element where it’s like the writers are just being smartasses after a while. Having to go extremely out of their way to make siding with colonizers seem like a competitive option.
Pokemon shield
Cuphead
pisses me off, which was a nice outlet when I was stranded by flight cancellations during thanksgiving
Celeste
Also very difficult, but really easy to stay patient with, which is nice.
Disco Elysium
None of the discourse made me want to play this, but people talking about the mechanical stuff it did got me extremely interested. Mostly Delivered IMO.
Breath of the Wild
You can approach the nodes of the main quest in the order you choose, and the second one I chose made ninjas start fucking spawning everywhere when I’m just trying to explore, and there’s no way to make it stop. May go back to it one day.
Podcasts
Relentless Picnic Patreon feed
The treats really helped me start distinguishing individual personalities, compared to the regular eps.
Picnic Discord!
Fun, but also I think Mechs are not my shit.
So perhaps it's a situation like that? Regrettably, "Flying Ponyta" has not yet attained the same status as "Surfing Pikachu" in Pokémon lore, but give it time.
  We also know, thanks to a line in the episode "Island of the Giant Pokémon," that Team Rocket's James received his Koffing as a Christmas present. Now, it's unclear whether Santa gave him the gift or he received it from a friend or family member or Giovanni, but we at least know that, like in our own world, sometimes new pets are given as Christmas presents. How they are hidden to make them a surprise remains uncertain — considering that, if it was in the same house as James, he would've definitely heard it shouting "KOFFING" every few seconds — but if Santa gives them, he likely uses the same technology that goes into PokeBalls to keep them hidden, mechanics that in the Pokémon world are fairly widespread and barely proprietary.
Tumblr media
    Finally, Santa is so approachable in the world of Pokémon that gifting is a two-way street. A song on the truly bizarre Pokémon Christmas Bash album called "I'm Giving Santa a Pikachu for Christmas" details Professor Oak's plans to return the favor to Santa and grant him a Pikachu for all of his hard work and the joy he's spread. Oak's lines indicate that Pikachu will be both best friend and utility as it supplies his sleigh and workshop with "Pika Power." Oak also makes puns about Santa finding Pikachu "rather shocking," the pun he made just after Pikachu shocked Ash Ketchum for the first time, a jolt so devastating that some fan theories state that it put Ash into a coma. That Professor Oak will arrive in his living room on Christmas morning to find Santa Claus electrocuted and unconscious on his floor seems to be of no serious concern.
  And where does Santa live? In the banned "Holiday Hi-Jynx" episode, he dwells in the North Pole, which unlike the landmass under the South Pole, is a region of Arctic sea ice. Does this mean that the Pokémon world is subject to the same climate concerns as the earth? Topography, biomes, and the relationships between various ecosystems are an important part of games like Ruby and Sapphire, but the fact that in the Pokémon world, the North Pole is also located on a massive chunk of ice makes me wonder how much of a continuous issue it is.
Tumblr media
    Along with Santa, many of the traditions of Christmas carry over to the Pokémon world, including holiday parties, visiting home, and the idea of "mistletoe" being a sort of romantic elixir. Not only does Brock ask Santa to put Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny under the mistletoe in the titular song "Pokémon Christmas Bash," but Ash and Misty have an entire duet called "Under the Mistletoe" in which they both desperately pine for one another. And from the Pikachu shorts and a Meowth song entitled "Nobody Don't Like Christmas," we see that Pokémon also partake in seasonal traditions and find the holiday to be important, anthropomorphizing them another step further.
  Regardless of whether or not you celebrate Christmas, I hope you're happy and healthy this winter. And I hope you continue to watch Pokémon and many, many other wonderful series. Because as we all know, anime is truly the gift that never stops giving.
FEATURE: Why Paleontology Is So Important To Pokémon
Tumblr media
  In the last few decades of the twentieth century, there was an invigorated interest in paleontology. It was likely the most intense era of fascination with the prehistoric since perhaps the Great Dinosaur Bone Rush of the late 1800s, with scientists not only focusing heavily on the extinction event that ended the reign of the dinosaurs but also on their beginnings and how they evolved in intricate and surprising ways to become the dominant creatures on the planet. It was the age in which novelist Michael Crichton wrote Jurassic Park, a science fiction novel that would eventually become the highest-grossing movie of 1993. And a few years later, it was the age that gave us Pokémon.
  Now, Pokémon has many ties to paleontology. First and foremost, there are the "Fossil Pokémon" in the games, monsters that can be revived from their long-dead bones and turned into warrior pals for you to add to your team. Many of these Pokémon are based off of real-life prehistoric animals. Tyrantrum is a souped-up Tyrannosaurus Rex. Anorith is based off of the Anomalocaris, a kind of big, ancient shrimp. The Cranidos is very obviously derived from the Pachycephalosaurus. And the Aerodactyl is, well, a pterodactyl. And that's not even mentioning how many real-world animals have been named after Pokémon.
Tumblr media
  The existence of these creatures, like the existence of dinosaurs did when they were revealed centuries ago, opens up numerous questions about the Pokémon world. Did they exist with modern Pokémon? How did they die out? What was their ecosystem like? In some cases, they're shown to be still around and living — like in the anime episode "Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon" where a dynamite mishap reveals a cave full of dozens of them. But for the most part, they provoke our curiosity. What other ages are there in the grand scheme of Pokémon history (and pre-history)? What other species roamed the planet in the age of the Aerodactyl and the Omanyte? How different would a Pokedex look millions of years ago?
  This widespread passion for paleontology and dinosaurs gave kids a perfect foundation for their eventual acquaintance with Pokémon. Coinciding with the scientific research was a pop culture revival as well, one that sought to transform dinosaurs from the bloodthirsty titans of the Creature Feature-filled 1950s and '60s to a more benign and ultimately complex classification of animals. Stuff like the 1985 documentary Dinosaur!, featuring narration by the late Christopher Reeve, and the critically acclaimed Microsoft Dinosaurs interactive computer game gave us an image of dinosaurs as wonderful reptilians rather than terrifying, clumsy brutes. Popular films like Jurassic Park and The Land Before Time showed a more multi-faceted depiction of these creatures than had ever been seen before — they were scary, intelligent, caring, and even beautiful at times.
  So when Pokémon came out, a franchise that took what looked like RPG enemy monsters and filtered them through a lens of companionship and growth, kids were primed to receive them as such. The images we'd seen of dinosaurs roaming across the screen, whether they were solo or in herds, was not too different from what we'd see in the Pokémon anime. Being a fan of Pokémon did not directly imply that you were once a fan of dinosaurs or vice versa, but the connection in their presence and in their representation is clear.
  Finally, both foster a need for exploration. The case of the dinosaurs is one that is ceaselessly intriguing. They reflect how the earth changes, how species evolve to survive, and how the way we study something can change drastically over the years. To become fascinated with dinosaurs is to become fascinated with natural history in total. Similarly, it's hard to be a fan of Pokémon without becoming interested in the bigger picture — how it relates to other RPG series, how its many, many monsters have become simultaneous characters and branding iconography, how the series evolves in some aspects and doesn't in others. Both are stepping stones into wider areas of interest in ways that are borderline profound.
  I write this because starting in July 2021, various museums in Japan will be hosting a touring exhibit called Pokémon Kaseki Hakubutsukan. There, visitors can learn about how various dinosaurs and other examples of prehistoric life relate to the Pokémon franchise. I desperately wish it was coming to the United States, so if you're in Japan this year — or next year, depending on the museum — check it out if you're able to safely.
  I grew up loving dinosaurs and then I grew up loving Pokémon, and to see them be so intertwined over the years makes me ridiculously happy. The former lived in a real world that almost seems fantastical, the latter exists in a fantasy world that, thanks to many, many Nintendo handhelds, I've been able to visit over and over again.
