For the WIP title asks:
Rising Tide (which is also a song by Sunny Day Real Estate)!
Tell me, do Kyogre and Groudon meet at the shore to enjoy a nice playdate while Maxie and Archie fight over land/water property lines like the suburban dads they are?
this ask is sending me, oh my lord. thank you--i laughed pretty hard at this :D
and this song is within the time frame of songs i'm referencing in the fic, so that's just perfect! thank you!
"color your skin with gold, and the violence remains cover your eyes with rose, but the stain remains will you repair your life with all the holes you fill? smother your will and drain you of your passion..."
oh yeah, that's going on the playlist.
as for our beloved suburban dads, i can't say too much without spoiling the last quarter or so of the fic--though i guess i have been pretty transparent about maxie actually succeeding in catching groudon. that's a thing that happens. gonna be mum about the circumstances and implications and fallout of that, though. i'm sure it turns out fine.
as for the wip itself, it's the first chapter of eye of the storm. the title refers to the circumstances that drive may to leave home in the first place--things get to be too much for her.
for a little context about my may, she's 22 at the start of the fic, and had moved out of her parents' house at 18, back when they still lived in johto. she opted to move back in with them temporarily when they moved to hoenn (instead of staying in johto by herself), and it's a choice she starts regretting very quickly. snippet under the cut. i feel like i should add a trigger warning for this as well--it's a bad situation if you've ever been in it before but pretty vague if you don't know what you're looking at. tw for implied emotional abuse, i suppose.
This was bad.
May sat on the carpeted top stair and gripped her empty mug so tightly her knuckles turned white. A faint “godsdammit” floated around the corner that led into the living room and up to her ears. Whatever her mother was fussing with down there had her, to be incredibly mild, extremely pissed off.
This was bad, but it had probably been worse at some point before. Not that May could put a finger on when, exactly; the last four years of solitude had papered over the memory of her mother’s moods with a series of perfectly pleasant lunches and borderline enjoyable outings to the movies. The tone of voice May was catching now, in snippets from the ground floor, was a knife widening the old wound of the six years before that, during their time in Olivine, after their last big move. The first time this had happened, May had been thirteen and stupidly hopeful.
She didn’t have age as an excuse this time.
Did she really need another cup of coffee? She could turn around, tail between her legs, and head back to her room. This one locked, though that might cause her more problems in the long run. She’d already endured the years of formless suspicion about why she kept her door closed all the time, and even that particularly bad summer where the door had been removed entirely. She didn’t need, didn’t want a repeat of that. Something told her the offense her mother would suffer over a locked door would be far greater than over a closed one. Teenagers were just like that, after all. From an adult it would be an insult.
Moving back in had been a massive fucking mistake.

bandom x pokemon au
This whole thing got way out of hand and overdeveloped into a full blown brainrot and I blame @grayvineyard for indulging me (who made LOVELY art for this au <3)
Bear with me, set roughly in the 1st/2nd gen of pokemon so Kanto/Johto except for the pokedex, there's a mix of those just because. Technically thought out for geetrick with a side of petekey in mind, but also a shit ton of gen.
Here are the basic foundations:
-> pokemon teams
Gerard's champion team: Espeon, Typhlosion, Nidoqueen, Parasect, Mismagius and Salamence
- His Espeon is blind due to a surprise ambush kinda critical hit by a venom type back in his teens.
- Lots of rumors ensued from this, but they don't like talking about it.
- She guides herself by psychic waves/a psychic mental map and through both the mental bond with her teammates and Gee.
Patrick's: Ninetails, Togekiss, Staraptor (uncanny resemblance to Pete...), Venusaur, Ursaring, Luxray
- Although his team overall seems big and scary they are all sweethearts, extreamely nice
- Meanwhile he's small and snarky, the meanest out of them all
- Ninetails has an attitude problem. she's a princess and she expects to be treated as such (it's Patrick's fault really from spoiling her rotten when she was a little vulpix)
Mikey's: Jolteon, Arcanine, Ampharos, Milotic, Butterfree, Xatu
Pete's: Ambipom, Gliscor, Gengar, Sunflora, Honchkrow (uncanny resemblance to Patrick...), Coralina
Ray's: Magby, Houndoom, Charizard, Victini, Chandelure, Clefable
- it's a mystery how he found Victini, he refuses to explain, just showed up with them one day and that was that
- very smug about it when he uses them in battle (unofficial ones only, the league doesn't allow them in his elite team)
- bane of Gerard's existence how Ray babies them around (Victini enjoys this very much, he gets extratreats and hangs on his shoulder/head), like cmon, that's a fucking legendary!
- hatched Magby from the egg himself, and he turned out to be a crazy kid, running around without looking twice, there's always gotta be at least one grown human or pokemon supervising him at all times
- his Clefable doesn’t seem to fit but is the secret trick, knowing fire blast as well as solar beam and water pulse.
-> general context
Professor Way moving into town (Pallet i guess?) with Mikey
She's... Not the best at parenting
cue him journeying through Kanto with Pete and Patrick (suppose they are around 17ish during that as an start point)
Pete as the high-spirited, optimistic trainer who sees the good in everything and fully beliefs in the power of friendship to rise over any challenge coming into his path. Strong trainer, makes friends with everyone, extreamely focused on the experiences the adventure brings, half assedly aims to become pokemon master. (kinda ethan/gold vibes ngl)
Patrick as the other side of the coin, not completely opposite, but a stark contrast to him, where Pete is ambitious in his journey, challenging gyms and aiming for the league, Patrick isn't too sure about his path, is critical of the battling business and more theoretical/book strategic when approaching a challenge. Doesn't mean he has a worse bond with his pokemon. Uncanny, natural gift at battling tho, but honestly doesn't think twice of it ("what like it's hard?"). Lowkey on a midlife crisis at 18 going from trainer to breeder (pokemon daycare worker?) to researcher, boy does not know what he's doing. But it's fine. Mostly.
Mikey's the kid that looks too cool to be a nerd and simultaneously seems like too much of a nerd to be as cool as he is. Has their only braincell for most of the time. Doesn't give a fuck, only he knows what his plan in life is, does he challenge the gyms? does he plan to go into research under his mom? he just vibes. BAMF, keeps the other two out if trouble more often than not. Lowkey mommy issues
Gerard as reigning champion, child prodigy, went on his journey with Ray at 13ish, crowned at 14, practically a legend. Extreamely extravagant, drama queen all around. Lots of rumours about him AND his blind Espeon. Honestly overworked, plus mommy issues (my emotional punching bag <3). A mountain hermit that thinks living on top of a freezing mountain is better than doubling down to the unsurpassable merit of peaking as a preteen. Deep down a sweetheart with a passion for pokemon and training.
Ray takes it easier, one of the elite four, fire type trainer. Local sunshiney, polite guy who Knows What He's Doing. Actually a badass who is tired of everyone's shit. Mostly holds the last braincell he and Gerard have left. Perchant for petting every fire type he encounters no matter how big or dangerous.
Ray and Gerard took out Team Rocket when they were teens, with them now being around 21.
Professor Way centers/ed her investigations on legendary pokemons, devoting most of her time and attention to it. Gerard would try to help out, not really successfully, and eventually developed a weird relationship with them as a concept, slightly obsessed, slightly frustrated, an underlying splinter still dug inside him.
When the Ways were kids there were a bunch of Eevees in the lab for research purposes or whatever. They always played with them and eventually kept one each.
Pete’s jacket’s fluff is made of mareep wool which, paired with his penchant for hugging Mikey’s and Patrick’s electric types, means his always charged with static energy and he’s a nightmare to be physically close to
Mikey Pete and Patrick are little shits and they lure Gee’s pokemon with too many berries
Like Patrick quickly becomes their fave bc of all the treats and how little he gives a fuck about Gerard’s stubborness
Specially after Gee runs off to Mt. Silver for a while and he’s the one who has to periodically hike up to make sure the idiot’s still alive
(He’s fine btw, it was never that serious)
Yeah, I think that’s it for now but it’s ever growing…

now im thinking abt different managers' style of play in the hypothetical pokemonverse
i think klopp would prioritize speedy pokemon with good attack. glass cannons who are fragile defensively (get it bc liverpool players are always injured...). he'd use lots of priority moves along with things like u-turn and volt switch to try and overrun the opponent. always tries to hit as hard as he can, lots of boosted crit rate moves too
pep would be pretty flexible i feel and he'd always have something to counter the "meta". held item merchant. entry hazards galore. runs builds you never in your life would think that they work but somehow they do. he has an entirely different team depending on the day and the direction of the wind so you can never predict what's up
arteta feels like the type of guy who likes a good buildup so he always tries to set up offensively. always has a clear plan in mind and good use of baton passes. every pokemon on his team has a clear role. doesn't like powerful low accuracy moves as they're unreliable so he prefers the consistent but constant damage
mourinho would be an absolute cunt to face off against. setting up defensively, pokemon who are def/SpD walls. spamming recovery moves. protecting every other turn. poisoning your whole team. pp stalling you. most toxic (ha) trainer to ever exist
ancelotti.... now i don't know much about him tactically (so sorry if it's inaccurate) but there has to be something in that "power of friendship" meme right. so he'd run some pokemon that evolve via friendship and use return a lot. no thought behind team composition just his strongest pokemon and pure vibes
on a similar note. don pioli. hates switching out. level 70 ace (leao) and level 30 rest of the team
ok thats it from me for now

I came up with a pokemon fusion AU where the figabros got a pair of twin shiny eevees for their birthday a few years before The Coin TossTM (it just seems to me like shinies would totally be a status symbol bc of their rarity so ofc the princes would get one for their birthday) and because it's an AU and I love my boys they unintentionally discover two new eeveelutions entirely by accident- Edgar discovers steel, and Sabin discovers fighting. They're both shiny so nobody knows what they would normally look like yet but Edgar is so thrilled at his little indestructible robot cat-fox and Sabin is very proud of his super strong buddy. When they meet back up during the events of ff6, their new eeveelutions recognize each other!
Behond: Macheon! ("machine evolution")
Tumblr media
I was going for a steampunk looking vibe to match the setting of the game! I also went on about Macheon's stats and Edgar's strategies a little long so I'll put the rest under a cut so it doesn't take up too much dash room.
It evolves with high friendship + high def + holding a TM 053 (as of gen 9, this is Smart Strike). Edgar figures this out fairly quickly by attempting to replicate it with another eevee, so he can make notes about Macheon's physiology, behaviour, and temperament for the pokedex. (Edgar gets to write a whole new pokedex entry!! He's the first one to discover Macheon!! He's absolutely ecstatic about it.)
Macheon's highest stats are his defensive stats (physical and special def, HP) and his offensive base stats are in the more average range, the lowest stat is his speed (because he's made of metal lol). Edgar being the smarty pants he is had Macheon learn Trick Room to make his low speed an advantage!
Macheon's moveset:
Smart Strike (70 base power phys steel attck, never misses)
Trick Room (status move that warps the battlefield so slower pokemon move first)
Work Up (increases phys and sp attck by one stage with each use)
Parabolic Charge (electric type sp attck with 50 base damage that restores the user's HP by 50% of the damage dealt)
Depending on the situation, Edgar will have his partner learn or remember moves as well- if he can, he always goes in prepared. Macheon can play both support and offense well, just like Edgar himself in ff6. Its learnset has several status moves, as well as attacks that inflict status conditions and debuffs on the opponent. Edgar will usually swap out Trick Room for a move like Screech (lowers opponent's phys def by two stages), Supersonic (inflicts confusion), or Thunder Wave (inflicts paralysis) if he's battling alongside allies with faster pokemon. He gives Macheon a Covert Cloak to hold, so it can avoid the additional effects of moves like Discharge or Shadow Ball that may inflict status conditions or debuffs. Pokemon with status moves like Haze (resets all stats to their base value), Safeguard (protects from status moves), and Taunt (prevents the use of status moves) would be The Worst if he wasn't able to run a mixed setup with Macheon, but he is!
Essentially, Macheon is very similar to Umbreon, except without the weakness to fairy, bug, and psychic type moves. It still has a weakness to fighting though, as well as being vulnerable to fire and ground. However: as a steel type it is immune to poison! The irony of which has not been lost Edgar, what with his father having been poisoned by the Empire and all.

So what'd I like about Pokemon Scarlet?
Tumblr media
Quaxly is a good boy. 10/10. Kind of weird that they made a starter a single stage evolution though. His name is Athos and he will be the best Musketeer one day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love my bicycle boys. Good good lizard mounts. They can stay forever. One day I might buy me a plush of them. The cyclizar is named Rizzo and taking this picture was so fucking difficult. I miss ffxiv's gpose.
Tumblr media
I caught a shiny! I have spent many hours through out the years shiny hunting and the only times I've found them is when I haven't been looking for them.
Tumblr media
Big fan of the megas-man. Mine is named Aramis and she is the most powerful cannoneer in Paldea. She is the only mon that has stayed in my party since capture.
Tumblr media
So I was fighting one of the Titans: the False Dragon Titan and I was way under leveled and all my other pokemon had fainted and it was just me and Pockets here. Pockets held the fucking line, tanked two hits that should have fainted her in a row, paralyzed the Titan, and pulled out a clutch crit for the win. The power of friendship saved the day and despite having a mid design, I couldn't bring myself to abandon my Reliable Partner. (Which she earned almost immediately after that fight so my hc is that that's how she earned it.)
Tumblr media
Sorry the pic is rotated but this is my Poison Tera type Goodra. Her name is Ophelia and she exists to ruin Fairy Types days.
Tumblr media
I really love these little candles? I wish they had been a bigger feature of this city's gym. I was really expecting I'd be going around using the candles as clues to some kind of puzzle.
I dont have any relevant pics for the rest of these but the Falling Rocks Titan or whatever its called was another skin of my teeth battle. I was really excited to have some difficult moments in a pokemon game. I felt very clever and talented after Athos and I eeked out a win.
I enjoyed Arven's plot line. Probably the most compelling story line in the whole game. I hesitate to describe it as an arc because I'm not sure how much he grows, but I was invested in his problems enough that I prioritized finishing his quests first.
I like the concept behind tatsugiri and dondozo, though it seems odd to include in the game considering how rare double battles are.
I liked the Ruinous Artifacts side story a lot. The pokedex entry for the tablets friend I think is very telling and I was surprised they didn't carry that theme through the others in the set. Either way, I enjoyed hunting down the stakes. Finally gave me a reason to explore.
I liked a lot of the character designs. Rika is stellar and she just oozes gender. I like how many buff ladies are in this game. Eri is an icon but I'm not sure of what she is. So much of the cast as such big trans energy that my official verdict is Eri is cis just for how gender non-compliant she is. Truly there has never been a more gendered pokemon game.
My favourite teacher was Mr. Hassel. I had a lot of fun in his class. Sure isn't as visually appealing as, say, Ms Raifort or Mr Saguaro, but I have done enough school to know the best teachers are usually strange little book creatures who thrive on obscure content area trivia. Will take Mr Hassel's class until I run out of hours in my degree plan.

Throne of...
That Scarlet sketch reminds me of...
youtube
I tried that game recently. A Pokemon sweatshop game? Hehehe. Of course. Unfortunately it was just a 1-hour trial so I never got to build up an empire using sla- ahem, volunteering pals. Nothing stops them from leaving whenever they want. In that vein, nothing stops me from chasing after them with a bat again.
It was a fascinating experience. A lot more hands-on than the whole Sujimon thing in Yakuza 8. In that game, you recruit Sujimon by either pulling them from a gacha machine, at which point the Sujimon are released from behind bars (they're criminals, after all), or you run into them in the streets, beat the crap out of them, and then give them a gift so they fight for you and work at your sweatshop in Dondoko Island, where all they get for their hard work is just a pat on the head, and even that is optional. Fully grown-ass men, sifting through mountains of garbage for salvageable screws and metals, and all they get in return is a pat on the head.
But in Palworld, I recruit more workers by first beating them with a bat and then stuffing their near-dead bodies in a ball. Just like in Pokemon, their health can NOT be all gone in order to be captured. Which was something I learned pretty quickly. "Oh, so despite the cutesy art of swirling eyes, they're actually dead so I can't catch them. And that's why I got meat off of them." ... I beat a lot of chickens with a bat in that game. Yakuza Ishin's chicken racing trauma hasn't gone away yet even though it's been over a year at this point. Flustercluck, you son of a-
In a Pokemon game, where the Pokemon have more power than you, the whole friendship crap is actually necessary to get these things to listen to you. Or have one very strong Pokemon that you actually take care of, and the rest are expendable thus coerced to obey. But in Yakuza 8, the Sujimon are forced to listen to you because either you saved them from jail, or you already beat the crap out of them once before and nothing stops you from doing that again. So in that vein, in Palworld, I made sure to establish my dominance first by beating them up with a bat, and killing a few of their friends. "Huh, 3 cat things over there. I have one Poke... er... Palball. So I'll beat one to death, let one run to tell its friends what happened here, and then catch the last one, which would be all too eager to prove its usefulness."
Heh. In Pokemon, any unnecessary extras are simply released into the wild, merged with some other creature to create an abomination before being let loose in the wild, or traded to a game whose save file is about to be erased so they are lost in the void for all eternity. In Yakuza 8, the unnecessary extra Sujimon are sent to The Committee, where what happens next is "strictly confidential". And in Palworld, the unnecessary extras are... eaten. I never got to test if the chickens in that game would eat grilled chicken. "Remember your friend that was slacking off all the time? ... This is that friend."
A shame I never got too far in the game, since it was just a trial. I'd eventually tech up to rifles. I don't know if a sniper rifle is in the game, but... hehe. A sniper rifle, an assault rifle, a bat, and a dagger, and then I'd be all set to make my own version of Majima Construction.
Tumblr media
"I'll kill ya first!"
Hehe. Welcome to 135's Palworld, where the pals are inspired and motivated by listening to Majima Construction Anthem, and have their safety assured by the overlord, who watches from her sniper tower with her sniper rifle, who also leads by example with a bat and a dagger. Remember, pals, your safety is your concern!

Hi professor!
(ooc)Wanted to say that I’ve been wanting to do a blog similar to this for a long time but I’ve never really gotten around to do this and have kinda been a bit nervous to make one. Now though, I’m in the works of planning things out and setting one up thanks to you and this blog (not a professor blog but still). You’ve been a big inspiration to me and I wanna thank you!
In the meantime though, I did want to ask, what’s your thoughts on Pokémon evolutions that happen while trading? It doesn’t seem natural to me and it does kind of confuse me a bit on how it could work like that.
I'm going to step out of Professor shoes and be a little ooc here to think about this is a broader sense, and explain how i look at them. From there you're welcome to elaborate, ignore, or use that as a basis for your own thoughts on it. Evolution via trade is just an evolution triggered by a large life change. This trigger is adaptable and poses as different thing, be it like the Anime, where we see a pokemon evolve to protect its trainer, or change forms to win an important battle, or impress a mate. Unlike games, we see this happen mid-scenario, not after gaining exp from a win or use of skill. This leads me to believe it’s the emotional state of the Pokemon that’s the true catalyst here.
In the wild, at least on this blog, I like to think of it like this:
Machamp who rule their pod, and look after their fellow machops and machokes will grow old, they eventually come to a point where a new leader must be selected. Their fellow pokemon will show their skills, and the chosen winner to take over the group will receive the dying machamp’s belt. That belt being handed over is enough to evolve the Pokemon, and for them to take their place as the new leader, with their new improved stats.
Onix tunnelling along underground may accidentally stray into a vein of the same rare metal that we produce metal coats with, enough of that metal will trigger their evolution. They may actively search for it, or it could be an accident.
Alakazam outsmart each other for fun, if they get smart enough, they too could just evolve out of accumulative experience.
A Pokemon risking itself to protect its family, trainer, or friends, can use its energy stores up (if they have enough of course) and force the evolution. If we see Pokemon rejecting and deciding not to evolve even without stones and items, then the theory stands that they can suddenly decide to tap into that power.
I believe in general there are a multitude of ways for Pokemon to evolve, not just the set in stone (pun sort of intended) ways we see in the games. For example, eevee. It’s evolutions are triggered by location. Flareon live in hotter climates, and flock to volcanoes, hot grassy plains, sweltering jungles, and even hot springs in some areas. They bring their young. Their young then evolve too eventually, through time spent in the area. No stones involved. You could argue there’s Firestone’s in the area perhaps, a vein underground? Sure. Maybe? But there also might not be.
Do we also ask the same questions of friendship evolutions? How do you measure that? What’s the unit for friendship? Feels to me like another evolution through life experiences, not all that different from a trade (leaving one trainer to join another, a pretty big event for anyone) if you ask me. It’s just like...I don’t know, it feels like a lot of evolutions are aided by items, are more successful with items, or would be a sure fire way to achieve it, but quietly, subtly, all Pokemon must gain exp and skills through simply living. For doing regular normal stuff day in day out. After a while, that energy equates to the stones, or the trade, or the item, and the Pokemon evolves without any fancy method.
Humans and trainers figured out how to speed run growing battle-ready Pokemon partners, to win money, stay safe, become famous, even commit crimes. We say Pokemon in the wild handling items or doing tasks and they just happened to come into contact with the right thing, and evolved. We now mass produce held items to aid this. Could argue there’s a strong financial reason for the lack of talk about ambient evolution as discussed above.
Gotta remember too, these were marketed video games, meant to be sold and to make money. The games would implement mechanics like evo-trades, to bring excitement to kids who had only one of the games as a kid, to get them to trade with other people who might be able to help them get those elusive evolutions for the games completion. Back then they developed this evo-via trade methods to encourage social gaming in children, amongst other things. It was widely thought of as a bit of a gimmick from what i've gathered. For this reason I’m a little flexible with the mechanic as a whole, it feels like a neat thing for kids to discover when trading Pokemon back when it was first brought in, Googling answers wasn’t so much of an option, you use to have to get a guide book, or ask someone who knew how. On average kids had to find out either by chance, or by word of mouth. It made people want to interact. Don’t we all have memories of our fav evo trade finally being ours when playing? It’s a great bit, people enjoyed it.
Take what you will from this, I got a little too into it, I think a lot about these things, but never have a reason to write it down....or try to haha! I'm glad you got going with your own blog, it's really nice to see so many people give it a go. We can all do with more content, and why not make what we want in the pokemon world right? its a lot of fun, creative, and can bring joy to others too. I see no down side.

Cinderquil
Word Count: 4900+ (oneshot)
[AO3]
Genre: Fluff/Friendship
Characters: Cinder Fall, Cinder’s Pokemon
Summary: Pokemon AU. Ever since they were young, Cinder's only Pokemon has been her starter, Ella the Houndoom. She is proud of her position as her Trainer's sole companion and sees no reason for anything to change, thank you very much. So when Cinder brings home a new addition to their team, Ella's world is turned abruptly upside down.
Warnings for implied/reference child abuse and animal abuse
Inspired by this art by @astoria00!
~0~
Ella, like her Trainer, had no concept of downplaying her own importance.
She considered herself the paragon of partner Pokemon. Ever since she was a little Houndour, tripping over her own paws and barely able to cough out a flame, she had always done her best to look after Cinder. The girl she had grown up with was whip-smart and strong, as hotblooded as any Fire-type, and Ella would follow her commands without hesitation.
That being said, she didn’t always understand what was going on in Cinder’s head. For instance, coming to this unfriendly and unfamiliar region on the orders of that shadowy organization. Sure, the safe house they’d been provided was comfortable, a small and cozy cabin in the woods, but, Ella wondered, at what cost? She had been alone for hours.
Ella watched the thick forest around her with all the alertness of a hunter, gnawing at the large Grumpig ear she had been given. It was not hard work, guarding the cabin while Cinder was out on her mission, and it was clear that Ella was better suited for the job than Talonflame. The Flying-type had been lent to Cinder by her new leader for easy transportation, and while the supercilious look in his eyes got Ella’s hackles up, she didn’t feel threatened by the new addition. Talonflame was, if not temporary, nothing more than a utility.
Ella was Cinder’s only Pokemon. As for Ella herself, she disdained the company of both humans and other Pokemon alike. None of them had ever done anything for her: all she needed was her Trainer.
It was growing dark, and she could smell impending rain in the air — not unusual, in this awful cold and wet region — and was glad when she caught Cinder’s scent alongside it, growing steadily closer. She did not move from her spot on the front porch, but her ears perked up and her gaze homed in on the speck of red in the distance. Small as it was, it stood out against the dark greens and cloudy greys that surrounded them.
Ella didn’t scramble up and run to her as she would have in the past — she had learned professionalism alongside Cinder as well — but her shoulders relaxed and her barbed tail flopped back and forth against the wood. Finally, her Trainer was home and things were the way they were supposed to—
Wait a blasted minute.
What was that?
“Hello, Ella,” Cinder greeted her as she stepped out of the trees, as if everything were normal. “Did you miss me?”
Ella jumped to her feet with a furious bark, the Grumpig ear clattering down the stairs. Her tail stood straight out and her head reflexively jerked up and down, showing off her horns to the tiny, dirty, squirming thing that Cinder was carrying into their house.
To the Cyndaquil’s credit, she got the picture immediately. She didn’t even try to flare up her back before emitting a loud squeak and attempting to leap out of Cinder’s arms, presumably to scurry back to whatever hole in the ground she had come from.
Unfortunately, instead of coming to her senses and letting it go, Cinder held Cyndaquil tighter, close and protective. After a few seconds, she curled up timidly against her chest.
“Shh, relax, it’s okay. Ella’s not going to hurt you.” She narrowed her eyes warningly at Ella as she walked up the stairs and into the cabin. “Ella is going to be a nice girl and hear me out.”
No, Ella damn well would not. Not without standing her ground and making her case. She followed Cinder inside growling and bristling.
Once the door was shut behind them, the one Pokeball at Cinder’s belt burst open, and Talonflame flapped across the living area to his perch next to the fireplace. His beady black eyes watched them with unusual interest, and Ella resented the sense that she was putting on a show for him.
What’s gotten into you?! she barked at her Trainer, who had begun trying to coax Cyndaquil out of her defensive ball. You said all you needed was me! Why would you do this without even asking me?
True, all Cinder could hear was “Houndoom Houndoom Houndoom Houndoom,” but after all this time, Ella knew she was getting the gist of it.
“I realize that this is sudden,” Cinder began, her tone deliberately calm and even. “But I couldn’t exactly leave her there and run back to check with you. And we can’t just toss her out now that I’ve brought her here.”
Ella snorted. Very convenient for both of them. And how soon can I expect to be replaced? Was I that shameful of a starter?
With her free hand, Cinder reached over to grab a towel from the kitchenette and started rubbing the dirt from Cyndaquil’s damp fur. She let out a muffled squeak at the sudden touch, but didn’t uncurl.
“I expected to run into some people while I was out, that wasn’t the problem. There’s plenty of towns and cave systems around these mountains to look through. I didn’t plan on actually battling anyone, but apparently somebody on the trails had something to prove. One of those rich boys — you know the type, of course.”
Yes, they had met more than enough of those in their time. One of Cinder’s new teammates even seemed like one all grown up, complete with an equally smug Toxitricity by his side. Ella didn’t relax at all — in fact, her shoulders tensed up more — nor did she soften her accusing glare, but she did cease growling.
“So he won’t take no for an answer, won’t even break eye contact, and I decide that if he insists, I might as well teach him a lesson. He had three other Pokemon, and they were high-level but sloppy. I’d bet money that he didn’t catch them himself, that they were gifts or trades that he had no idea how to actually deal with. Talonflame made short work of them, but then — hm?”
Cyndaquil had been starting to lift her nose tentatively out of her defensive ball, and only now that she wasn’t too frightened to think did she notice the running slow cooker and containers of Pokemon food on the counter. The realization made her pick her head up and squeak loudly, and the smile that broke out on Cinder’s face was of the sort that Ella hadn’t seen in years.
“Are you hungry? I know, you’ve had a long day...” She dug around in the box of PokePuffs — not strictly belonging to Ella, but who else’s would they be? — and pulled out a Basic Spice to offer it. “Here, you can have this, can’t you?”
Cyndaquil sniffed the treat, and gnawed at it a little, but didn’t move to take or actually eat it. Cinder sighed.
“Well, I had hoped so, but I guess not.”
She gently pushed the treat into Cyndaquil’s stubby arms until they gripped it, and then knelt to set the tiny Pokemon on the floor. Ella tilted her head as she scowled down at her: what was the matter with her, stumbling around like that? Had she hit her head somehow?
Cinder shot Ella a warning glance that, in Ella’s mind, was completely uncalled for. “Be nice.”
Ella huffed, and stalked deliberately closer. Cyndaquil paused in trying to figure out what the PokePuff she held was, and looked worriedly between the human and Houndoom glaring at each other. Once Cinder was satisfied that Ella would not, in fact, rip the smaller Pokemon’s head off like some kind of feral beast, she turned around and started going through the cabinets and minifridge.
“I did beat his whole team, as far as I’m concerned,” she went on with her story as she retrieved the big saucepan and a carton of milk. “All the ones who were fit for battle. But when I held out my hand for the money he owed me, he went purple in the face and insisted that we weren’t done. He pulled another Pokeball out of his pocket, and sent her out. And of course she had no idea what was going on, did you, dear?”
Cyndaquil blinked, puzzled, and nearly tripped over her own chubby legs. Ella’s anger was very quickly giving way to confusion of her own; she knew that the average starter Pokemon wasn’t wildly powerful, to match its equally inexperienced Trainer, but surely they started at at least level one?
“No, she didn’t. I don’t know what garbage breeder they got her from, but she was definitely not ready to be separated from her mother. Even Talonflame backed off.”
Something finally clicked in Ella’s head, and her eyes went wide. She lunged forward, claws clacking on the hardwood floor, to sniff vigorously at Cyndaquil, who nearly fell over backwards in surprise. Under the rainwater and dirt, the scent of juvenile pheromones was unmistakable.
From up on his perch, Talonflame chirruped, amused. It really took you this long to notice? Do you usually growl at baby humans, too?
Ella was too stunned to even bark back. True, she didn’t spend any time around other Pokemon, but she should still have known...
“Obviously this spoiled brat had no business keeping her in his care,” Cinder said, stirring vanilla and cinnamon into the simmering pan. “But fortunately, it was very simple to set up an exchange.”
Talonflame chirruped, amused. Your Trainer throws a mean Mach Punch, Ella.
Cinder smirked at the fresh memory. With her free hand, she reached into her hip pouch, pulled out the shards of a shattered Pokeball, and tossed them into the trash can. Ella heard muffled clinks, and caught a glimpse of a coin purse that definitely was not theirs. Or, well, it hadn’t been before.
“I think it’s about time we start expanding our team, anyway. We’re in service to a very powerful leader now. We should be meeting a higher standard.” She glanced at Ella while digging back in the cabinet for the Vespiquen honey, and amended, “An even higher standard. I know this was a shock to you, Ella, and I don’t expect you to babysit her. But I couldn’t imagine a better example for her than you.”
Well. Ella couldn’t argue with that. She considered Cyndaquil for a moment more, watched her twitch her nose curiously up at her, and then ducked her head down to take the smaller Pokemon’s scruff in her mouth. As expected, she was still young enough that she went limp in her teeth.
Cinder blinked, but didn’t move to stop her. “Ella? What are you doing?”
Ella didn’t respond; she was already carrying Cyndaquil over to the living area. She laid down on the rug, deposited Cyndaquil between her front legs, and set about licking her short, downy fur. She wasn’t sure how Typhlosion mothers usually groomed their young — she barely remembered how her own mother had done it — but this felt right.
Cinder smiled and returned her attention to the pan on the stove. Cyndaquil, for her part, didn’t seem upset, but she was certainly confused.
Who... She was cut off by Ella’s wide tongue sweeping over the top of her head, but tried again. Who are you?
My name is Ella, she informed her, making sure to get the back of her neck. Cinder’s hasty rub with the towel hadn’t done anywhere near enough to rid her of the residue on her fur, and it certainly hadn’t done anything for the scrapes on the skin underneath. I am your teammate now.
Oh. Cyndaquil squirmed around some more until she could look up at Cinder’s back. That lady’s nice. And warm.
Her name is Cinder. She is your Trainer, and you should do as she tells you.
My Trainer’s sleeping on the ground back there, Cyndaquil said with innocent bluntness. I don’t think he got up yet.
Talonflame let out a deliberate, throaty laugh, and Ella shot a warning glare over her shoulder before returning to her ministrations.
You can forget about him, she insisted to Cyndaquil. All you need now is us.
Perhaps it was only because Cyndaquil was too young to fully grasp the reality of her new situation, but she didn’t question it any further. Instead, she settled down between Ella’s front legs and continued to watch Cinder make her dinner, submitting to a thorough grooming as she did so.
Talonflame tilted his head back and forth as he stared down at them. You’ve changed your tune quickly, haven’t you, Ella?
Shut up, said Ella curtly, in between licks. You’re not staying.
We’ll see about that, Talonflame replied, too lazily to be threatening, as he tucked his head beneath his wing for a brief nap. Wake me when dinner’s ready, will you?
Ella made a noncommittal noise in the back of her throat. She couldn’t find the room to care about that right now. Not when the cabin was steadily filling with sweet and savory scents, when the room was growing warm in the way it only did when the evening chill was falling outside, when there was a sense of comfort settling into her bones that she hadn’t felt in quite a long time.
Not since...ah.
Ella looked up at Cinder, who gave her a knowing smile back. Of course she remembered too.
~0~
It’s only the adrenaline surging through her veins that’s keeping her moving. She just wants to run, run, run, as far and as fast as she can, because if she stops for an instant they’ll catch her and drag her back, but she can’t feel her paws anymore and it’s very quickly not her decision.
The driving rain is already making it hard to see what’s in front of her, but then her vision blurs out completely, and she’s dropped right into a puddle before she even realizes her legs have buckled from underneath her. She doesn’t have the strength even to struggle back to her feet. All she can do is shuffle on her stomach through the mud, inch by miserable inch, until the sore tips of her toes brush rock, leaving behind smears of blood that are quickly washed away.
Her eyes flick upward: less of a cave than a hole in the ground, but she’ll take it. It’s a painful squeeze through an opening that’s just barely bigger than her own body. When she finally manages it, she collapses, lying like a wet pile of fur on the rough stone. Even here’s not really dry — cold runoff drips steadily right into her ear — but she couldn’t move to a better spot even if she tried.
She closes her eyes, the sound of her own labored breathing filling her head. She doesn’t know if she’ll ever get up again, and right now, she doesn’t much care. All that matters is that she’s not moving, that no one can touch her here.
So it takes her a good minute to register the strange scent wafting into her nostrils, underneath the heavy smells of rain and earth: acrid enough to make her nose twitch and fur raise. With a colossal effort, she lifts her head an inch, and finally notices that she is not alone here.
Barely a few feet away, desperately trying to cram herself into the far corner of the cave, is a human not much bigger than her. A little girl, just as skinny and soaked as she is, her amber eyes huge with terror. She wonders what she’s so afraid of — wonders if there’s anything behind her, if she should be afraid too — before realizing.
Oh. This was your hiding place first.
The girl doesn’t seem to have been here long: she’s out of breath, eyes puffy and red, and none of the mud spattering her once-white shirt and pants has dried. She gapes at her for a long moment, before hesitantly scooting forward and reaching out towards her ears.
What ear she has left pricks straight up. She might have intruded on this human, sure, but that doesn’t mean she gets to touch her.
Her hackles raise, her lips pull back, and she snaps at the offending fingers the second she realizes where they’re going. She misses — the girl gasps and scrambles back again, holding her hand protectively to her chest — and her smooth, flat-topped teeth clack painfully together.
“I-I’m sorry!” the girl yelps. “It’s just...you’re hurt.”
She’s fine. So what if her ears and tail had been cut into this awful shape? So what if she’s been robbed of her fangs, and now her claws? She’s still a Pokemon and not some spoiled brat’s toy. Still strong, strong enough to defend herself against one pathetic human.
She growls, but it’s weak even to her own ears. She is strong, it’s either tell herself that or lose hope completely, but she’s running on fumes. If she can’t fight back...if she can’t make them stop touching her...
The girl is doing something puzzling now, and it almost makes her let down her guard. She’s pawing at her shirt as if looking for something, but it doesn’t seem to have any pockets or other affectations. Then after a moment, to her shock, she grabs the one part of it that isn’t filthy, tears a long strip away, then tears that in half with a soft snap.
“Here...” She edges closer, slowing but not quite stopping at her growls. “I — I get it if you don’t want me touching your face. But your paws are bleeding, and...”
She narrows her eyes and keeps her teeth bared in warning: with the combustion pouch in her throat snipped or punctured or even pulled out entirely, whatever they had done to it, a cigarette lighter could produce a bigger flame than she can right now. But she doesn’t have to act like it.
The girl bites back a whimper, the smell of fear still coming off her in waves. “I’m not trying to hurt you, I promise. I just want to help. Please?”
Growls keep bubbling up from her throat, but they’re half-hearted. Against every instinct, she slides her front paws forward. The wounds on her half-amputated toes sting when the scratchy fabric wraps around them, but it’s a small relief to have the bleeding finally staunched.
The girl smiles. “There. Better?”
This close, she can see in the girl’s sunken cheeks and ashen skin how starved she is, spot the jagged outline of a fresh scar around her neck. The faint smell of human blood, not quite covered up by the muck, reaches her nose. Oh. So they really are in the same boat.
She goes quiet, and tries to relax, and is rewarded with the fear-scent steadily receding.
“My name’s Cinder. Do you have a name?”
She heaves a deep sigh in response; she’s never been called anything but mongrel, dumb mutt, dirty animal, and she’s pretty sure those don’t count as names.
“No? I’ll think of one for you, then. Just give me a little bit, I’ve never named anyone befo—aah!”
Thunder shakes what felt like the whole world around them, and they both jump so badly they hit their heads on the painfully low walls. She lets out a whine despite herself, curling tightly in on herself to keep from shaking. Cinder doesn’t look much happier, but instead of recoiling...
“Here...” Cinder mimics her, getting down and snuggling up next to her back on the floor. “I know I’m not very warm, but I should be better than nothing.”
She makes a soft noise of assent. When Cinder slings an arm over her shoulders, hugging her body close and gently petting her flank, it doesn’t exactly make her feel fuzzy on the inside. But it stirs something deep in her chest that she doesn’t have a name for yet, and it’s a welcome distraction from the cold and wet.
“We can stay here until the storm stops. We could figure out where to go together,” Cinder suggests, in a hesitant murmur. “We could be friends.”
Friends. She’s never heard the word before, and isn’t sure what it means, but she wouldn’t mind finding out. She twists her head around and licks Cinder’s cheek, and the girl giggles like she’s never tried to before.
The rain drives down hard and punishing outside, washing away all traces of them. Freezing droplets fall on them from the roof. They’re hungry, dirty, and shivering, with no idea of what they’re supposed to do next. But tonight they’re huddled together, the world outside this cramped little cave does not exist, and for the first time in their lives, they aren’t alone.
 ~0~
“Dinnertime,” Cinder said, balancing four dishes as she came into the living area. Talonflame stirred and flapped down from his perch to join them as she served the meal: beef stew from the slow cooker for the three of them and warm spiced milk for Cyndaquil.
The baby Pokemon let out her loudest squeak yet and bounced out of Ella’s legs when the dish was set beside her, but stopped short of actually going for it, looking up at them hesitantly.
“Go on. It’s all for you, dear.”
Cinder, sitting cross-legged on the floor with them, smiled as she watched the tiny Pokemon scramble eagerly towards the milk.
“You like it? There’s plenty more where that came from. We’re going to raise you to be big and strong, and one day nobody will dare mistreat you. Right, Ella?”
Ella loyally thumped her tail on the hardwood floor: she knew better than anyone. She knew that she wasn’t the starter Pokemon that every child dreamed about, nor, she conceded, had Cinder begun as the cool and confident Trainer that any Pokemon would want. But still they had fought every day to survive together, to become strong enough that nobody could ever lay a hand on them again.
She had evolved under Cinder’s command, and with evolution the body parts that had been carved away from her when she was young were restored to her. Most importantly, it had given her her fire back, and she knew in her heart that she would never have been able to reach that point on her own.
It was just like Cinder used to say, in the dead of one of their countless nights huddled up together: It’s all right if nobody else loves us. All we need is each other.
That had held steadfastly true for them, from childhood to adulthood. Ella saw no reason why the same could not apply to Cyndaquil, if she herself were magnanimous enough to allow it.
As she gulped down tender chunks of beef, she watched the tiny Pokemon lapping up the milk so earnestly she seemed in danger of falling headfirst into the dish. It had taken Ella a long time to train herself out of scarfing her food down like that, so fast she didn’t even taste it, to be sure that nobody would snatch it away from her now.
Though Toxitricity and Drapion still acted as if they would sometimes, just to get a rise out of her. While she was still small, Cyndaquil would be free to take refuge behind her legs or in Cinder’s arms, but soon Ella would have to teach her how to stand up for herself, and to not roll over for them or anyone else. There were a lot of things the two of them — three, if Talonflame decided to make himself useful — would be responsible for teaching their newest member. She ought to start making a list.
Not that there was much room in her head for that right now. Cyndaquil polished off the milk before the rest of them were halfway finished with their meal, and after licking the dish clean, she looked up and glanced uncertainly around at the three of them.
Now that there was nothing to distract her, it was starting to sink in that she was all by herself, in a strange place surrounded by strange people, with no idea what was going to happen to her next. Ella knew that feeling: the sudden drop in her stomach, the cold spreading like frost over her skin. She remembered. She expected that Cinder did, too.
Her Trainer was watching Cyndaquil intently, and at the first tiny whimper that might have been the prelude to crying, she set her bowl aside and held out her arms.
“It’s okay, sweetheart. Want to come here?”
With only slight reluctance, Cyndaquil allowed Cinder to scoop her into her lap. Smiling, she rubbed the tiny Pokemon’s belly with one hand and scratched the back of her neck, just above the incendiary spots, with the other. Cyndaquil let out a series of high-pitched cheeps and squirmed happily in her lap, clearly unused to such affection.
“There, you see?” Cinder cooed, as Cyndaquil twisted around so she could scratch under her chin. “Nothing to be afraid of. This is your home now, with me and your big sister Ella.”
Ella! Ella! Cyndaquil squeaked, delighted. She says we’re sisters!
Ella swallowed a chunk of potato and tilted her head at them. Sister. Another word she would soon be learning to embody.
~0~
The next morning, Ella found her need to pace militarily when impatient at war with her utter disgust of wetness and mud. They had planned a schedule for Cyndaquil’s first full day with them yesterday evening, and it would not do at all to start slacking so soon.
Last night, Cyndaquil had tried to sleep in the corner of the bedroom at first, clearly too used to being shunted out of the way. She had needed plenty of coaxing from Cinder and a commanding bark from Ella to feel safe climbing up onto the bed and letting herself be tucked in between them.
She had slept restlessly, kicking and yelping in her dreams, needing constant soothing to calm down. In the morning Ella had had to drag her exhausted body out from under her blanket, shaking the sleep out of her head. Even Cinder, who had always been a light sleeper anyway, had been rubbing her eyes as Cyndaquil followed her out of the bedroom, bouncing at her heels. Arceus only knew where the little Pokemon had gotten so much energy from.
Ella lifted a paw and shook excess mud from it, her lip curling. Cinder had said that they would only be a minute, it had now been several, and if they didn’t get out here in the next ten seconds she was going to march in there and drag her Trainer out with her teeth—
“Being patient, Ella?”
Ella turned and fixed Cinder with A Look as she watched her coming down the front steps of the cabin, determined not to return her easy smile just yet. She was supposed to have been introducing Cyndaquil to a new Pokeball, but as it happened...
“Yes, I know,” Cinder said, reaching up to steady Cyndaquil as she sprawled happily on her belly, atop her new Trainer’s head. “She does have a new Pokeball now, but I think she likes it better here with us. Right, dear?”
Cyndaquil chirped assent, grinning and swinging her stubby legs.
“You’ll need a proper name soon, too. But training comes first, so watch your sister carefully, now. Ella, if you would?”
Ella gave a firm nod and stepped back, facing the open space in front of the two of them, so Cyndaquil could get a good view of what she was about to demonstrate. The smaller Pokemon, while still idly playing with Cinder’s bangs, was staring transfixed at her. Ella doubted whether she could even muster up an Ember yet, let alone try Flamethrower. Well, then all the better a show for her.
She would never again take for granted how good it felt to flex the muscles in her throat and get her combustion pouch working. It was like taking a gulp of sweet smoke, sparklers lighting just under her skin, as the heat surged up from within her.
Maybe the need to show off to someone younger, which she had never had the chance to do before, gave her some extra fuel: the flames that burst from her mouth burned hotter and stronger than ever, brightening the overcast morning and sending steam hissing up from the puddles before her.
Cinder gave her an approving smirk and some soft applause, but Cyndaquil couldn’t contain herself.
Wow! She took a flying leap off of Cinder’s head and scurried to Ella’s side, mimicking her battle pose. My turn, my turn!
She opened her mouth, throat straining and tail sticking straight out, only to cough up the measliest crumb of flame that Ella had ever seen. It extinguished itself almost as soon as it had been ignited.
Oh, Cyndaquil said plaintively, tail drooping. I...
Ella gave her a nudge with her snout that she hoped was uplifting. Will try again, that’s what you’ll do. As long as it takes. Don’t look so downcast.
“Whatever Ella’s saying to you, she’s right, dear,” Cinder chimed in. “We’re going to become the strongest, but not overnight.”
You do have an advantage. I had to figure this all out on my own. Ella re-assumed her attack position. She would go slower this time, explain the physical aspects of combustion that were innate to all Fire-types, so the little one could better lean in to what felt most natural. You have me to look after you. And when you’re finally ready to be in a real battle, you’ll be far more prepared than the others. Understand?
Cyndaquil nodded very seriously, then mirrored her once more, sparks flying already from her arched back.
Good. Now, watch closely...

Summary: Claire helps Patience hone her abilities. Patience helps Claire track down a cat.
Written for SPN Women Week Day 1. Prompt: "skills"
Bub is missing again.
“Bub” is the name of a mean stray cat missing a chunk from his ear. Claire’s been leaving cat food out for the ugly old thing for weeks now, and whenever he doesn’t come running she panics.
So, for the third time, Patience finds herself enlisted in the search for a cat that Claire doesn’t even technically own. “If it’s gonna bother you this much every time,” Patience says, “why don’t you just take it in? You know, get him his shots, a collar, a microchip.”
Claire makes a face at her before turning back to look at the road. She’s been driving around the neighborhood slowly, scoping out every shrub and checking under every parked car. “Bub doesn’t want to be chained down,” she explains. “He’s a free spirit.”
Alright, well, Patience is too tired to unpack that right now. She lets it lie and looks out the passenger’s side window, alert for any signs of movement. “Maybe he was never a stray at all,” she tries, “and his owner finally tracked him down and brought him home.”
“Do you know that?” Claire asks.
Claire’s always asking if Patience knows things— what happened on Jody’s date last weekend, what Dean’s middle name is, whether or not Alex is the one who ate the last ice cream sandwich in the freezer. Patience keeps trying to explain that she can only see the future. “Psychic” might be a misnomer— her abilities are precognitive, not telepathic.
She basically gets previews, little spoilers about what’s to come. And though she’s been working at it, she can’t seem to get her psychic abilities to do the kind of reading and divination her grandma could do. She gets glimpses with no context, no backstory.
Missouri Moseley could walk into a room and feel every ounce of heartbreak, grief, hope and faith in the people standing there. Patience can barely pick up on it when Alex and Claire are pissed at each other.
Still, Claire brings her along whenever the cat goes missing. Seems to think her ESP can home in on missing animals. Patience keeps telling her otherwise, and yet here she is, once again. That’s the trouble with having no social life and no better plans.
Maybe she should join a book club.
Claire rounds the corner, eyes darting around for any sight of the mangy cat. The first time Bub vanished from Claire’s sight, all the neighbors seemed intent to help. They explained they hadn’t seen the cat, but hoped Claire would find him soon and offered baked goods and platitudes in the meantime.
But these things have an expiration date. You can only lose the cat so many times before the routine gets old and the neighbors lose interest.
“My educated guess ?” Patience sighs. “The cat’ll come back when it gets hungry. Just like before.”
Claire makes a tch sound and mouths “educated guess” under her breath. Apparently, because Patience is psychic she’s supposed to be omniscient. “So which is it?” Claire says. “Is he back with his ‘real’ owners or is he going to come home when he gets hungry?”
“Don’t be a jerk,” Patience says. “I’m here, aren’t I? I’m helping you.”
“... Yeah. You are,” Claire says, ducking her head. “Sorry.” Her eyes scan the road ahead, looking for the telltale streak of a cat darting out from under a parked car or vanishing around a tree trunk. Still nothing. “Hey, Patience the Pet Psychic,” Claire says. “You should write that down, that’d be a great children’s book.”
“Very funny,” Patience says, rolling her eyes. She’s silent for a few moments and then says, “Cla-aire the Monster Slayer.”
“That doesn’t really rhyme.”
“Sure it does.”
When the sky darkens and the streetlights flick on, Claire drives them back to the house, Bub-less and dejected. “I’m sure he’s fine,” Patience tries.
Claire bunches her shoulders, the collar of her leather jacket looking like a cat’s raised hackles. Maybe, Patience thinks, that’s the connection— Claire in many ways resembles an angry cat. She and Bub might be kindred spirits.
“I’m just tired,” Claire says, yanking the keys out of the ignition. “We’ll try again tomorrow.”
Patience considers pointing out that Claire could at least ask instead of just assuming , considers reminding Claire that she has her own life outside of playing “pet psychic.”
But she doesn’t actually have anything to do tomorrow. Or the rest of the week. And as futile as it feels riding around looking for a runaway cat, it is something to do. And it makes Claire feel better.
And… straining her psychic muscles to pick up on any trace of the old tomcat is at least better than doing nothing and letting her abilities degrade. Over the last year, she’s been trying to find ways to train her brain, shape her psychic visions into something useful.
Jody’s supportive, but she, like most people, doesn’t know anything about being psychic. Kaia’s got a fraught relationship with her own special skills and usually chooses not to talk to Patience about seeing the future, and Alex is so entrenched in nursing and hunting that the few “normal” moments she gets at home are devoted to unwinding and relaxing.
Which makes Claire Patience’s most ardent supporter in developing her psychic abilities. A very grouchy, blonde and mostly clueless Yoda. What she lacks in background knowledge she makes up for in persistence.
“Hey, Patience, guess which hand?” Claire will ask, holding the last fortune cookie behind her back. “Hey, Patience, what number am I thinking of?” Claire will ask, perched on the arm of the couch. “Hey, Patience, heads or tails?” Claire will ask, flipping a coin to catch it in midair.
That’s not how it works. That’s not how any of it works— Patience can’t predict things at will. Her psychic visions operate on a schedule of their own, with no concern for Patience’s own convenience or comfort. One minute, she’s watching shitty reality TV while Alex nods off on her shoulder. The next, she’s watching Jody narrowly avoid being bitten by a vampire.
It’s a lot different from just guessing a coin toss. Still. Patience can’t help but think that her grandma would’ve passed all of Claire’s little tests with flying colors.
That night, Patience doesn’t dream about anything— at least, not anything useful. She has an anxiety dream about being lost in Aldi, roaming the aisles with increasing frustration. But nothing about the future. Nothing about Bub the cat.
She’s pouring herself a bowl of cereal when Claire stomps inside, the porch door swinging shut behind her. “Still gone,” she says darkly, grabbing the cereal box and her own bowl. “Food hasn’t been touched.”
“Claire,” Patience says, “why don’t we just go to the SPCA? You can get yourself a cat that’s not, you know—”
“What? Not damaged? Not a lost cause? Not hard to love?”
Whoa, Patience wants to say. “A cat that’s not missing ,” she finishes. “We can get him his shots and a collar and everything.”
“I don’t— I don’t just want some random cat,” Claire says. “I want to find Bub. I want… I want to find him and bring him home. I have to bring him home.”
“I know,” Patience says, and just like that she does . She does know.
She knows everything, feels everything, the aching loss in Claire’s bones that’s both recent and so, so old. Memories of Claire hitchhiking and stealing and conning her way through the country, desperately chasing a mother who was desperately chasing a dead man. Jimmy Novak’s voice in her head, his face seen through Claire’s eyes, Please, Castiel, take me. Just take me. Again, his forehead pressed to hers, Take care of your mom, okay, bub?
Bub.
Patience looks at Claire. Sees her, in a way she hasn’t been able to see anyone before. “Bub… ‘bub’ is what your dad used to call you.”
Claire squints at her. “Uh. Yeah,” she says. “Wait, I didn’t… I didn’t tell you that.”
“No,” Patience breathes, meeting her eyes across the kitchen, “you didn’t.”
Slowly, a grin spreads across Claire’s face. “Holy shit , Patience, you just… ? You just did that. You, like, read me.”
“I, uh, I didn’t know. That I could do that,” Patience says, caught between marveling at this new development and feeling self-conscious at intruding on Claire’s emotions and her past.
Claire doesn’t seem put off at all. She’s actually bouncing with excitement. “We gotta test this out. Oh my God. It’s like a whole new Pokemon evolution for you.”
“It’s not really. Like that. In any way.”
But Claire is already humming the Pokemon theme song. She grabs her car keys. “Alright, well, let’s go look for that cat. I’ve got a good feeling about today.”
“I read you, Claire, that doesn’t mean I can read the cat,” Patience reminds her.
“Yeah, yeah, but you can still help me look,” Claire says. “I don’t need your third eye, just the two on your face.”
“That’s… yeah, fine,” Patience acquiesces. To be honest, she’s buzzing with the knowledge of what she can do with her powers. If Claire’s happy to be her test subject, she’ll spend all day with the girl. “Just let me grab a coffee.”
“Ooh, me too. Wait!” She wiggles her fingers toward Patience. “Do you Know how I like my coffee?”
“Half-and-half. And enough sugar to kill you,” Patience reels off. “But that’s not because I’m psychic. I’ve just seen you fix yourself coffee before.”
“Y’know, I think the line between ‘psychic’ and ‘observant’ is thinner than you might think.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Patience says, and then pretends to stumble backward toward the table, overacting the part. “Oh, oh, I’m having a vision… I see you … making coffee for us…”
Claire rolls her eyes, but she dutifully sets her keys down and busies herself with getting the travel mugs out. “That’s not gonna work for everything, you know.”
“Aaah I see you bringing Jody’s suit to the dry cleaners next week. I also see you driving me to the science museum.”
“Hilarious.”
Patience smiles at her. It’s nice to have someone else get excited about her powers. It’s nice to be allowed to be excited about this, to learn a new skill and have it mean something good to someone besides herself. She doesn’t feel like a freak or a failure. She just feels… like a psychic.
She feels like her grandma would be proud.

OK so i beat legends (aka got the credits) so here’s my pokeau thoughts, as expected
warning for legends story spoilers roughly recounted in a pokeau lens, no aftergame spoilers bc im tired and havent gotten there
preface ; the gang just kicked ramiel’s ass but the entire thing stressed ridley out so bad combo’d with aster triggering a ptsd attack caused ridley to throw themselves 500 years in the past and creating a fractured, alternate past.
the legends world is more of a pocket space than anything, a copy of 500 years ago but some dude who thinks theyre washed up in their early 30′s is there (ridley)
ridley is stuck for roughly 2 months and time in the normal timeline moves on without them there - so they’re considered a missing person in the main world
im going with the canon ~500 years now because kamado mentioned they went to sinnoh to escape war and conflict, which also happens to align with when aurelien was setting everything on fire in the pkau timeline
so yada yada ridley gets picked up and thrown into team galaxy. they dont really like it much at first because of trauma related to being a trainer but then their cyndaquil looks at them and theyre like ‘fuck’.
they started off as a pokedex artist but was moved to field work after they beat up too many people in battle and kamado was like ‘yes lets send the person with chronic fatigue out for this job because they are good at battling. what could possibly go wrong’
ridley meets the diamond gang and adaman is kinda like :eyes: at ridley’s phone like ‘wtf is that’ and ridley , being stressed out of their mind, lets it slip that they’re the emissary of dialga and adaman is immediately like ‘ok. we’re besties now.’ despite ridley emphasizing they seemed to have overcharged/lost their ability to manipulate time - adaman seems determined to help them get it back
so everyone runs around aimlessly for a while, ridley deals with the lords and uses their ability of being adaman’s new favorite person to get him to get along with irida more and general have everyone be friends
ridley is starting to feel more confident in themselves , they’re still dealing with fatigue but being more active has helped, they’ve formed important bonds with people and pokemon. they do however cry at least once a week about the fear of being unable to ever return home
so the whole defeating all 5 lords thing happens, and ridley causes their fractured timeline to become more unstable - kamado thinks this is on purpose and kicks them out so they hang out with adaman until volo is like ‘BRO WE GOTTA GET THE RED CHAIN’
because this is a fractured alternate space the lake trio still exist (and havent re-merged with arceus yet) so they go and have some introspection there i guess
then they go up tha mountain and are like ‘cool time to throw the red chain at the hole in the sky’ . however, like when ridley was 11, it turns on them and reactivates their godly powers and they’re struggling to control them. but with the power of ~friendship~ . adaman and irida talk ridley down from losing control and killing everyone (again).
so ridley is like ‘sick i feel like ive finally harnessed and realized my power for things other than speedy art commission delivery’ HOWEVER they kinda forgot they arent the only sinnohan legend , and because this world is a fractured distortion created by ridley , palkia is a horse plinko fractured distortion as well. not a true legend, but more like a manifestation of their insecurities. they have a cool epic god battle and ridley wins and everyone is happy :)
[insert aftergame here i havent played it yet but i know something happens]
anyways after everything is REALLY dealt with ridley starts thinking about home more and more since they regained their powers and now have the ability to go home - but their new friends dont want to see them leave and ridley has Big Conflicted Moment. however, they end up deciding they want to go home, as painful as it is.
but adaman butts in and is like ‘hey can i come with. i think it’d be cool mai dont burn down the house while im gone!’
so ridley is like -heavy sigh- and takes adaman with them to THE FUTURE and reunites with everyone and its happy the end

Stick of Truth Commentary
Intro
Intro cut scene is a nice touch! The animation is nice, and it adds story and stakes to the game the boys are playing. Reminds me of “Lord of the Rings.”
I like how the boys see the stick as a golden staff, but it’s literally just…a stick.
Create your character
Fighter, Mage, Thief, Jew – which is the best and why?
Intro to New Kid and family
Dialogue between parents creates an ominous backstory. Who is looking for New Kid and why?
New Kid is a mute weirdo and I love it.
The first quest (making friends) reminds me of “The Sandlot.”
The shitting feature is awesome.
New Kid meets Butters and is brought to KKK
What exactly is the power of diabetes?
Chekov’s Clyde!
It’s cute how cool everyone is with Princess Kenny.
I like that every player is called Douchebag, but I wish every player didn’t have to play as a boy.
Elves attack
Funny how Cartman’s alarm is just Butters yelling “Alarm!”
Cartman has pretty good commentary when New Kid is fighting. I actually miss that later on.
How did the elves snag the stick? Either Clyde is a bad watchdog or Kyle is super strategic. I choose both.
New Kid must find Token, Tweek, and Craig
Token
I never knew Token was so rich that he had security! It’s probably to keep Cartman out.
I love that Token’s property is calling Dark Meadows.
Token: “The elves took the stick again?” Haha!
Tweek
Tweek is the only employee at Tweek Bros.? That’s called child labor!
I love that Mrs. McCormick thinks the meth heads in her garage are just nice renters. Is she being paid in meth?
Why would a 10-year-old boy be an undercover cop? Only in South Park.
Tweek was totally named after the word “tweeker.”
Craig
Craig is in detention for (of course) flipping off the principal. Is Principal Victoria still principal at this point?
Craig’s alias is Feldspar the Thief? I refuse to believe this isn’t a reference to Malcolm in the Middle.
On the “thief” option at the beginning, Cartman says he’s never seen a white thief before, yet Craig is a thief. Hmm…
“Heeeere they come…I’ll be outta here in ten minutes.” Smug, snarky Craig is the best Craig.
I like that Mackey seems to know he’s in a video game (by referencing the boss fight). It’s very Deadpool.
The Bard
The Inn of the Giggling Donkey is just Jimmy’s house. His living room is convincing as a bar/lounge/hangout.
Twitter = carrier raven
“There once was a maiden from Stonebury Hollow / She didn’t talk much, but boy did she swallow / I had a nice lance that she sat upon / The maiden from Stonebury who was also your mom.” I love Jimmy’s songs!
Butters: “No hurry, Douchebag. The princess is just being raped.” OMG
An elf was jumping on the bed to simulate raping Princess Kenny? The boys are really committed to this game.
Cartman: “Good job, Princess Gone Wild. Double D buddy powers.” Kenny flashing his man boobs is the best distraction tactic.
The Brown Note is Jimmy’s best attack.
“Welcome to the KKK!”
Alien abduction
Cartman’s fart lessons finally come in handy! New Kid’s ass is too strong to be probed.
I love that alien abduction is viewed as just another annoying part of living in South Park.
The guy from the recordings is the hobo hidden onboard, right?
The Nazi zombie hobo is the game’s first instance of the Nazi zombie plot. It tells us that the aliens are responsible for this when the ship crash lands to Earth and green goo gets in the sewer.
New Kid crashed an entire spaceship. He’s kind of a badass. And he gets to keep the alien probe!
The big bad government is involved now to deal with “another UFO crash.” How often does this happen??
Only South Park would try to pass off a UFO as construction of a Taco Bell. And only South Park citizens would believe it.
Recruitment (pt. 1)
All New Kid has to do to get the goth kids to join is put on black clothes. I’m glad to see they still have low standards.
New Kid finally meets Stan and Kyle! I’ve been waiting for this.
According to Kyle, Cartman lied about the stick being stolen and is hiding it. According to Cartman, Kyle is lying because New Kid can’t retrieve the stick if Kyle claims he doesn’t have it. It’s a game of “he said, she said” but I’m inclined to believe Kyle. This is Cartman we’re talking about…
PTA meeting
I’m disappointed no one yelled “Rabble, rabble!” at the PTA meeting.
Is no one else alarmed that Randy lured a young boy into the bathroom alone?
“That’s all you’ve got is a sign? At least crap on a desk or something!” Mr. Garrison is speaking highly of Cartman, I see.
She-Ogre
“Give me back my iPhone, DEMON!” This is an accurate depiction of a brother-sister relationship.
It’s adorable that Stan uses Sparky in battle.
Taco Bell
I love that the big bad government agents are such bad liars that they killed a guy asking about encharidos.
“Goddamn it! I’m so tired of Nazi zombies. It’s so…overused!” Haha!
I’m surprised the adults actually took the bombing threat seriously and weren’t bummed about no Taco Bell.
Recruitment (pt. 2)
The final goth test is DDR?? That’s so conformist.
Once you win the goth kids over, you can recruit them to either Cartman’s side or Kyle’s. I always pick Kyle’s side when I play this. I’ve been itching to betray Cartman since this game started!
South Park Elementary
The huge battle scene takes place at the school because it’s where Cartman supposedly hid the stick. South Park Elementary is busted and makes a great setting for a battle scene. More “Lord of the Rings” vibes!
New Kid’s farts help Kyle’s side get the upper hand. Take that, Cartman!
Another reason choosing Kyle’s side is better: New Kid’s battle against Butters is more impactful because he was New Kid’s first friend. If it was a face off against Stan, it wouldn’t be as emotional.
The final battle gives New Kid one last chance to pick a side. Like Stan says, “I can’t believe this is even a choice.” Kyle vs Cartman is like Chanel vs Walmart.
Yet another reason choosing Kyle’s side is better: Cartman’s farting fire at the end of this fight is one of the best scenes of the whole game.
Clyde
I love the twist where neither Kyle nor Cartman was lying. Clyde really punked the fuck out of everyone.
Kyle is the only one to acknowledge he’s aware of the green goo and how dangerous it is.
Stan: “Clyde, but why?” Cartman: “I banished him to be lost in space and time and now he’s all pissed off.” Haha!
Clyde’s fortress is so badass. I can see the appeal of the dark side.
How the hell does Clyde have control over the Nazi zombies??
I love that Clyde’s power move is keeping his friends out past their bedtimes. The stakes are higher now, but this reminds us this is still a kid’s game…or it started as one.
Underpants gnomes
Gnomes: “The kid is awake! What do we do?” “Oh, fuck, I guess we gotta kill him!” Me problem solving.
Since when do underpants gnomes have warlocks?? I thought they were all failed businessmen.
For some reason, high pitched gnome voices yelling “Oh, fuck!” is really funny to me.
New Kid fighting underneath his giant parents mid-coitus is another iconic fight scene. How many times must New Kid dodge his dad’s ballsack?? The kid is hardcore.
The girls
Kyle convinces everyone to team up against Clyde. I’m continually impressed by Kyle because of his leadership, intellect (he spent all night researching), and open mind (he doesn’t balk at teaming up with the humans or inviting girls to play). I’m totally Team Kyle, if you haven’t noticed.
I love that the girls blindfold New Kid when they bring him to their lair. That’s some Mafia shit.
Annie: “He…doesn’t really talk.” Bebe: “That’s hot!” ME
Sunshine, sparkle, glitter…I wanna talk like this all the time.
Heidi Turner was the two-faced bitch! That’s very Mrs. Cartman of her.
Abortion clinic
New Kid’s abortion doctor is named Dr. Poonlover because of course he is
The big bad government is doing Plan B at the abortion clinic. Clever joke!
Where did Randy get that blonde wig from?? The men in South Park cross-dress so much.
Khloe Kardashian’s aborted fetus as a Nazi zombie is also a legendary fight.
Canada
New Kid didn’t get that his photographer was a pedophile even when he was almost butt naked?? Also, who was that guy who jumps out from behind the boxes?
The layout of Canada is clearly a parody of Pokemon games, right? Either way, I love it. The shitty jpeg videogame look is very Canada.
“They’re like wolves, but they’re dire.”
Getting trained by Terrance and Phillip makes all this back and forth bullshit worth it.
Clyde’s fortress
Of course Cartman butts in when Kyle’s trying to give an inspirational speech. What an attention hog!
It’s funny to me how easily Craig switched to Clyde’s side. Loyalty much??
“I really found myself relating to Clyde’s views about darkness and enslaving the world.” Jesus, Craig!
Cartman’s negative reaction to electricity is a callback to the chip put in his head in Bigger, Longer & Uncut.
“It’s my favorite kid!” WOW, RANDY
“Who could it be?” I love how long New Kid lets them all wonder before he steps up.
Stan: “Dude, that’s not Taco Bell sauce.” Clyde: “Then why’d I find it at the Taco Bell?” A+ logic
How dare you, Clyde! Let Chef rest in peace!
Government interruption
“Whenever aliens are spotted, vampires run amok…” Vampires exist in this universe??
I love that the boys don’t care about the big bad government’s scheme.
So New Kid’s special power is making friends on social media! I should’ve known.
Princess Kenny’s betrayal
Princess Kenny planned to steal the stick all along! This game is full of betrayals.
Kenny makes a pretty cute anime princess. Nazi zombie? Not so much.
Princess Kenny is a badass final boss. And I never saw it coming!
I’m glad the “never fart on someone’s balls” joke meant something in the end. I can see why it was banned – it’s super deadly!
End
The boys unite to save friendship and love…by chucking a stick into a lake.
New Kid stole Cartman’s catchphrase!
Why did Al Gore appear so ominously at the end?? What are you gonna do to the kids, Al Gore??

10 Favorite Characters
Tagged by @pinkafropuffs (girl this are so fun to do, thank you!) about my 10 favorite characters so here we go-!
(y’all are ready to see how basic i am?)
1- N (Pokemon)
When will he return from the war-
Ferriswheel shipping flashbacks because honestly? When will Pokemon give us a character as good as N again
2- Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Ah, Fullmetal is basically responsible for me being a weeb lol
While everyone else can do an analysis of his complexity, I simply will say Edward is the sort of character I love as protagonists of anime-
Love how he isn’t either too serious or too goofy. Hmm it’s hard to me to say what I like specifically about him lol.
Maybe it’s just nostalgia
3- Edmond Dantes (Fate Grand Order)
Ah yes, the current husband of mine- discount Komaeda.
By seeing my art you should realize how much i love him lol
4- Nanami Kiryuu (Revolutionary Girl Utena)
YOu see, normally I DESPISE characters like Nanami, even after they develop as characters since most of the time they end up being “mean because inferiority complex” HOWEVER Nanami doesn’t have that, she is great and she know’s it!
(Also most of the time, these types of characters aren’t really used comically- and I don’t mean in the sense of “Haha the bully girl got what she deserved!” but instead of this character getting themselves in comical situations)
But it’s the way she matures across the show what made her my favorite among the cast. I love the cast and the show as a whole- but if I had to pick one character among them, it’s Nanami.
5- Akihiko Sanada (Persona 3)
I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS-
But jokes aside Akihiko is my favorite character in Persona 3 (well....close tie with Shinjiro BUT).
He is just (lies on the floor) THE character I always romance because his route is just so cute and makes me feel warm and fuzzy having FEELINGS-
And I remember distincly rejecting his advances on accident and then realizing what I did and going “D:!!!!”
THis man right here was my REAL introduction to HAVING FEELINGS for anime men and I’ll never forgive HI-
6- Xion (Kingdom Hearts)
Shoutout to the firsts characters who I made deeper that the author intended.
If you ever have to fight agains me set it to Vector to the Heavens- if you have to avenge me set it to Another Side while you fight.
Do you fucking know how I was at 12 years old?? No friends, no homework playing KH 358/2 days??? How much I got attached to Roxas and Xion as a lonely girl who was just discovering things about friendship?
so I’ll ramble on about my interpretations on them because i’ll make it as deep as i want-
The way in which they form a friendship related on both knowing about the keyblade and having no memories from their previous life and the way in which it all comes tumbling down thanks to things outside of their control and how much they try to stop it-
The way Xion is willing to sacrifice herself for a greater good fully knowing that what the Organization is doing is bad and would endanger the worlds at large and how she, on her own accord, chooses to return her memories to sora even if it means dissapearing from the memories from everyone and truly dying in every sense of the world- all while having to run away from the organization because she would drain all the life from roxas because that was how she was created as a puppet-!
And the final clash! the way in which xion uses all of her power left to fight against the control of the organization because she wants roxas to slay her because she would rather die and lend her power to roxas instead of killing him and being used by the organization!
The way that final fight got integrated into the story! how she warns roxas when she will attack, or how she screams at him “STOP HOLDING BACK!” as her last efforts as an individual hanging to the remnants of their bond-!
As an extra note I’m so glad they didnt “end up together”- it was a good showcase of two teens who had a solid friendship that didn’t need to be turned into a romance because they already love eachother as friends!!!
So as you can see i have a lot of feelings for Xion-
7- Kishinami Hakuno (Fate/Extra)
SHOUTOUT to my favorite protagonist in the Fate Franchise she is so good and I just,,,,,,,,,love her?????
(if you pick Male Hakuno you are absolutely invalid)
So I completly love how she ends up inderectly being a subversion of the “amnesiac character self insert” because she NEEDS to start in a black slate for her to grow.
Love how sassy she can be in the dialouge options and SHE ALLOWED SABER ARCHER AND CASTER TO GROW AS PEOPLE and-
Play Fate/Extra
8-Kcalb (The Gray Garden)
He is so good :c when will he return from the hiatus.
Honestly he is the best character in the game and I love his interactions with Etihw and honestly he defined what 14 year old me loves in character design. AESTHETICS
9-Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Of Course I had to add the one who started this mess.
Sonic the Hedgehog deserves a better writting team than the one he has! SONIC’S CHARACTER PEAKED IN THE FICKUGGN SIDE GAME SONIC AND THE BLACK KNIGHT BUT EVERYONE IS LIKE “HAHA WHAT A BAD RETELLING OF ARTHURIANA”-
So anyways- Sonic the Hedgehog in the GOOD games with story is someone who never gives up no matter how hard or grim everything may seem, and how he shows kindness to those who needs it, who does what HE feels is the right thing, no matter what everyone else may say and maybe I’m reading too deep but this lil fucker whas the first videogame I ever *emulated* owned and had been a part of my childhood since I learned what the Internet was- I pirated the entire anime and took a REAL liking to drawing thanks to him.
Everyone out there in early 2010 tracing anime while I traced Sonic X screenshots lol
10-Steven Quartz Universe (Steven Universe)
I have a lot of feelings for Steven Universe as a show- and especially his protagonist.
When the show started everyone complained how annoying Steven was- but I never found him annoying? I really like how he has “traditionally femenine” traits and powers (healing, shielding, crying a lot) and isn’t shamed for it? The show has MANY problems but it I LOVE it.
And, since the start of the series I liked Steven, I love how he develops in the show, and honestly so many moments I saw myself in him- and then came Steven Universe Future which he explores his trauma after the events of the series- just everything about him just hit’s home- even more than I expected (the cactus Steven-)
How Steven goes from viewing the Gems as these all knowing powerful mother figures- and how he feels as if he has to live up to their expectations, and the impossible barrier set up by his mother at the start of the series-
(How later he view’s himself as a fraud- and how he doesn’t “pay the consequenses” and he is just “as bad as his mother”- the internalized self hatred, his drifting friends and represed trauma- I’m glad the show does this- I don’t think I would have self reflected as much as I did without this show)
Steven Universe is a show I hold close to my heart, so do I with it’s protagonist.
Haha I don’t feel like tagging people after that lol

Rules: name your top 10 favorite characters from 10 different fandoms, and I’m tagging anyone who wants to scream about their faves!
Tagged by @suricata-passer, I will do my best but don’t know if I have 10 fandoms worth to share lol!  1. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - Tetra! (I love my smol angry pirate captain!) 2. Harry Potter - Ron Weasley is my King 3. A Series of Unfortunate Events - Klaus Baudelaire (the narrator, Mr. Snicket, is very close to winning this spot) 4. Star Trek Voyager - B’Elanna Torres (I talk a big game about Janeway, whom I love, but B’Elanna is RIGHT THERE) 5. My Little Pony Friendship is Magic - Applejack is best pony and I am not taking criticism at this time 6. Mass Effect Series - Liara T’Soni could set a hit squad on me and I’d thank her 7. Star Wars The Clone Wars Animated Series - Ahsoka Tano (is this shocking to anyone?/s) 8. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power - .............this is actually hard because I love them all? When I’m watching the show literally whoever is on screen is my favorite character. In fandom tho I gravitate towards small angry women. So Catra wins ............................. Okay, to cheat this system and list more characters- 9. Pokemon - Misty (I discovered fandom through Misty fanfiction, but never actively participated or went bonkers. I tried to though! I joined a local gym at Hastings to kick ass at the card game and was the only one there who was excited. We got boxes of unique cards and since there was 4 of us the gym master gave us handfuls of them. I was literally given all the gym badges by my guy just because he saw that I came with a binder of cards and actually wanted to play the game) 10. The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind - M’aiq the Liar (I sunk hundreds of hours into this game, but never went full fandom, just enjoyed it by myself. I had a wood elf (forgot his name, oops) who I played the whole game through with my only rule being I wouldn’t use the land striders. Can’t explain how magical it felt to wander under the stars and along lakes for that run. Collecting potion ingredients for the mage’s guild and imperial cult was *chef kiss*)
#ask game#tag gane#fandom#favorite character#about the author#okay so those last two feel cheater cheater pumpkin eater to me#beacause I have a strong personal disconnect between#fandoms I was part of and things I loved to death but was never part of the fandom#and while if I'd grown up with pokemon and the internet existing widely at the same time I would have DEF been an awkward 9-11 year old#talking mad shit and loving Misty with my gay little heart#also I may have lied about my age on FF.net not just to get an account but read the NC-17 fics with Misty#because I didn't get why I wasn't allowed to and then when I did read them felt rather dissapointed that it wasn't like a bigger deal to me#hey kid your asexuality was showing there#Morrowind I never would have gone fandom on#I loved it#I loved learning the lore and find secrets and RPing by myself#(I did not love the cliff racers St. Jiub is a hero)#but I never had a desire to participate with other fans or even consume fan content#*shrug*#but there we are!#10 of my faves!#BONUS TAG ROUND#SW TPM: Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi#I went nuts for him when that first came out then burned through my SW love in about 1-2 years and hated it until I found SW TCW#I got the Obi-Wan costume and everything!#while my friends could wear the robe and even use my lightsaber if they asked nicely#NO ONE WAS ALLOWED TO WEAR THE PADAWAN BRAID BUT ME#I wanted to be Obi-Wan so bad folks#mom bought me Jedi Apprentice books because I wanted more Obi-Wan and Qui Gon#Then old fan dude bros made me hate the whole franchise for fucking

Everything about the pokemon au is perfect... is there lore???
oh you know me of COURSE there’s lore
It’s all kind of tangled together and hard to explain right now, so this post is gonna be a little less narratively-written and a little more expository. but as always, shoutout to @crystalfloe for being my partner in crime in developing this!
Some of the Ninetales dex entries say that it “came into being when nine wizards merged into one.” Naturally, we took this and ran with it: you know how illusioners are a sort of “secret mob” in Minecraft that were never actually implemented? Hundreds of years ago, in this lore, nine illusioners (possibly the last of their kind) met together in secret to preserve themselves. After a lengthy process of spellcasting, all of them gave up their physical forms and agency to create a new, pokemon spellcaster: Seto. Seto is his own person, not a conglomerate of nine, and he never really feels that he’s not; sometimes, though, when he argues with himself, it feels like there’s nine voices in his head all with different opinions. Being based on a kitsune and also having access to magic and curses in this AU still, he can shapeshift/illusion himself into a nearly human form-- he can’t/won’t get rid of the tails though, ever.
In these hundreds of years ago, Seto did some travelling, and his illager background eventually brought him to a wooden mansion. He lived there for a while, learning new magic under an evoker, and developing a gradual distaste for most other “humans” because of everything negative the illagers had to say about it. One lone adventurer, though, as they always do, stumbled upon the mansion, and found their way inside. Many illagers were asleep at this point in the night, but Seto wasn’t; he was the one who “greeted” the intruder firsthand. Said intruder wasn’t the nicest person either; they lashed out and tried to grab Seto’s tail to hold him down in a fight.
More Ninetales dex entries will tell you that “grabbing one of its tails will result in a 1,000-year curse on you and your descendants.”
Said adventurer lived and died uneventfully after that, but their descendants bore the burden. Sneaking around at night, looking to steal from illagers, and digging their way through the frostbitten winter woods, the family line was cursed with Weavile aspects; the original adventurer was doomed to slowly become one, even losing their mind in the body. Their bloodline wasn’t quite as unfortunate, but became a version of werewolf; were-weaviles, technically. Looking at too much moonlight at any one time causes them to transform and be mentally “replaced” by a far more animalistic version of themselves.
That’s why SSundee wears his glasses; they block out any excess moonlight. Of course, on the full moon, he has no choice but to close every curtain, because at that point there’s just too much to avoid. SSundee lives a rather quiet life, running a pastry shop in a no-name village, keeping his transformations to a minimum. He somehow inherited the original map that led to the mansion in the first place; he keeps ahold of it just as a reminder to not go there, ever.
SSundee’s got a friend, though, who’s willing to do anything for easy money.
Husky took the map, and ignoring SSun’s protests as just standard-SSun-paranoia, went to find the mansion to dig up any potential treasure there. Once inside, he was pursued by illagers, and fell between the walls; in the darkness, he reached for what he thought was a rope. It wasn’t, of course, and Seto had a whole new curse to lay. Husky had never been a fan of rain, surfing, or even baths as much as showers; Seto thought it would be the funniest thing to ruin the experience for him even more. (do I really gotta specify what pokemon Husky is) Husky’s started down the path of slow transformation, with an extra wrench in the formula; if any part of him gets touched by water, that part takes on more kip-like traits until he dries it. He found out while using SSun’s shower, and blamed it on him like it was some sort of shitty prank; when SSun wasn’t open about what he thought happened, Husky threw the door open.
It was a full moon that night (because of course) and Husky was terrified for a short while (because of course), running as far as he could. SSun, before he lost it, was even more terrified, because as far as he knew Weavile were nothing but predators; he doesn’t know much about Weavile, though, and what he neglected to learn was that Weavile are pack bonders, and that he had already built up a strong friendship with Husky. In summary, Husky spent that night trying to avoid being force-fed dead sandshrew by this terrifying demonic weavile that was also still somehow the mom friend.
BACK TO SETO, he has 1 (one) friend who isn’t an illager: a fellow troublemaking fox. Lox is a lonesome zorua who somehow wormed his way into the mansion (because doesn’t everyone eventually) and learned how to control his illusions by watching Seto in secret. Lox uses these illusions, generally, to fuck with people; it doesn’t help that Seto finds it absolutely hilarious. Eventually, Lox learned to create his own individual human form to cast, and learned sign language; he set out on his own just to explore, planning to find more people to mess with. Lox eventually discovered a small cottage in the woods, and was ready to just completely ruin this person’s day by unveiling that Deep Pokemon Magic--
--but True was, unfortunately, already a pokemon fanatic.
Even disregarding Tepig and Zubat, True tends to a bazillion wild pokemon, all the time, constantly. He’s invested in learning everything he can (scientifically) about how they work, especially their ties back to humans. (True is, in this AU, the one person who would be 1000% on board with being part pokemon, and also the one person who never will be.) When Lox tried to mess with him by impersonating people, True immediately recognized him as a Zorua, and tugged him inside for interrogation. True was relentless in his efforts to understand, poring over books, tests, and learning sign language to communicate with Lox better. Lox eventually mentioned that he didn’t want to be pinned down to one location, and didn’t plan on living forever in True’s little house; True realized this, of course, and waved him off, saying Lox was free to go wherever he wanted. Once away, Lox realized that though he liked the outside, he had enjoyed his time with True almost just as much; now Lox looks for any excuse he has to come back, and pops in from time to time for no reason.
One big excuse to come back, of course, is discovering another human-pokemon anomaly; when Lox saw a man with golden horns quietly using telekinesis to steal a lunch in a market square, he intercepted him and led him all the way back to the cottage. Sky was, understandably, confused and a little distressed; eventually after True sat him down they were able to have an actual conversation.
Sky’s history is (surprise surprise) Mary-Sueish. He’s a shiny hoopa (the only hoopa, so technically nobody knows he’s shiny?), and in this world, all legendaries have the ability to form-shift between pokemon and human. He was created by two other legends-- Notch (Arceus) and Herobrine (Giratina) to assist in preserving/expanding/helping the world. They both act as sort of guides for him in this AU, with neither really being evil or omnipotent. After creating Sky, they realized that while he was powerful, he had no experience in the world; they set him in a mostly-human form and instructed him to travel the world, meeting new people, and understand how humans and pokemon interacted and got along. They also, via a certain amount of magic, prevented him from saying what he or his history was; they didn’t want anyone finding out about the legendary child and trying to kidnap/control him. One notable ability of Sky’s is wish-granting; Hoopa being based on a djinn, we had to give him the magical bullshit. He can only grant one a day, though, in total, and he has plenty of restrictions on them-- no time travel, changing things that already happened, etc, etc.
While Sky couldn’t tell True any of his actual history, True has been helping him learn more about his abilities and is 100% willing to travel with him anywhere to learn more about him.
SPEAKING OF NOTCH ARCEUS did you know he had a bastard son?? And that son was Xephos? YEAH THATS RIGHT TC/YOGS CROSSOVER AND I DONT GIVE A SHIT
Respawning doesn’t exist in this AU, so the yoglabs complex serves a real purpose via the cloning machines. Xephos doesn’t actually know he has any Arceus genes in him; they’re locked away and not apparent at all. That’s not why we’re looking at yoglabs right now, though: we’re here for Bajan.
Backtracking once again, Bajan grew up in a relatively decent-sized village, watching Wizard of Oz (Poke-Oz?) and absolutely loving the Infernape character. When he was about eight, his village was raided by pillagers; he had to run, as fast and as far as he could. Eventually he stumbled into the mountains, and up to Xephos and Honeydew, who were conducting a relatively boring test compared to normal, and YES i’m saying that Bajan’s gay dads are from the yogscast, nothing matters anymore
Bajan was adopted into the compound and was a very curious and energetic child. So curious and energetic, in fact, that he stole a transformation talisman and used it without calibrating it first; he passed out and was given two weeks to live, with his human DNA in constant conflict with the over-abundance of non-specified Pokemon DNA. Not wanting to support child murder, Xephos developed a particular method that he severely hoped would prevent Bajan from dying; he had Bajan pulled out of his safety-fluid-tank for a few hours so he and Dew could talk to him. They explained the procedure and asked if he had any requests-- Bajan still loved Infernape, so that was the first thing out of his mouth.
In the experiment, of course, they had to use Chimchar DNA to more closely match Bajan’s youth, but the procedure worked; he was given a very specifically calculated transformation talisman to wear to prevent him from becoming unstable again. (He was a little miffed that he had been given the “baby” form, but hey, what could you do.) Bajan lived for the next few years as a poke-human hybrid in the labs, generally being a good, if destructive, kid, practicing his firey abilities. On his birthday, he committed a small act of mischief; he lied to Dew and was able to go outside the labs for the first time since he got there.
Bajan fucken loved the outdoors, because who wouldn’t, and went running around way past his curfew before he got lost. While lost, he stumbled upon an absol-- Jerome had been on the run for as long as he could remember, because of the human superstition of absols causing natural disasters. After enough poking and prodding, Jerome eventually agreed to lead Bajan back to the vault door; on the way back, he locked up and refused to move. Bajan followed his gaze and realized that Jerome had sensed an avalanche before it could even begin-- there was no way they were going to outrun it. Bajan positioned himself between the oncoming snow and his new friend, and put every effort he could think of into spitting out the most powerful flamethrower he ever would--
--and he evolved. Bajan had never realized he could evolve before, and spent the next five minutes in complete and utter glee before yanking Jerome back to the labs to show off his new form and his new friend. The yogs weren’t as excited as he was to bring an absol into a place prone to nuclear disaster; he was grounded for lying, staying out past curfew, and the aforementioned absol-napping; Xephos took a mild amount of pity on Jerome, though, and agreed to test whether or not he was actually the cause of natural disasters. Eventually, when nothing really proved that he was, Jerome was allowed to talk to Bajan again-- at which point Jerome asked Bajan to translate his request to the yogs.
Jerome had lived his life being unable to enter human society, even as a pet, because of the superstition around absol; seeing Bajan, a healthy and happy human-pokemon hybrid, had give him an idea. As Bajan translated, Jerome himself wanted to be a hybrid, so he could talk and interact with people. Xephos, though skeptical, was never one to turn down a scientific opportunity, and eventually was able to complete the procedure. Armed with a new half-human friend, a newly evolved form, and an advanced understanding of maturity, Bajan approached both Xephos and Dew one night with a request: he wanted to go outside the labs, with Jerome, and explore the world on his own to participate in battles. Eventually, they conceded; Bajan was abso-fucking-lutely ecstatic, and so was Jerome, to be travelling with someone for the first time ever. They currently roam the world as a duo, picking fights and having fun.
The entire team will eventually meet up, either through Sky’s wish-granting, Bajan and Jerome’s roaming, or Lox’s people-hunting; maybe a combination of all three. From then on they can travel the world together, working hand-in-hand to discover new things about each other and help one another as some of the only of their kind in this world.
Xephos, however, still sits in the labs, working on understanding pokemon in a much less communication-based way than True. Every time he re-clones himself, some piece gets lost, sending his mind into a darker spiral... it’s only a matter of time before he discovers his locked Arceus genes, and uses them in a way he definitely never should have.

it’s...... it’s a plotting call from yours truly......................... hide
Tumblr media
no please don’t hide because i am actually really desperate lmao ANYWAYS hola amiguitos!!!!! i am angel and i play four mocosos: vera, delaney, reagan and mafe! sadly, i am a whole flop who lacks plots (i have like...two in each one it’s sad) so here is i, crying for plots in the most non-aesthetic way because i am way too tired to make my aesthetic hoe ass do something cute to catch your eye before going to school.
i’m going to list three possible plots i would like on each character (and a lil blurb of them so you can get A FEEL, yanno?) and if there’s anything that catch your eye         pleeeeeease          let me know by either liking this, messaging me through ims or sending me a message on discord:      fullmetal#5312.         bonus if you message me through discord, though... i usually reply faster there because it’s in my phone and my phone lives in my hand skjshksjklsjslkj. i’m also going to point out that i’m more desperate for plots for vera and reagan.
vera.  one quarter vampire slytherin witch. i’m going to be corny on this one but... looks like she could kill you but is actually a sinnamon roll who could actually kill you. zodiac and astrology hoe. apathetic and funny as fuck. your favorite local tarot reader. give her candy and she will either shut up and love u. @nintendo release pokemon she DESERVES to play pokemon
guinea pig: THIS SOUNDS SO MEAN I KNOW BUT IT IS NOT!!!!!!!! so, vera is GOOOOOOD at potions, and she loves making unneccesary but very cute potions: for example, one day she came out with a potion that not only tastes like the wix’s favorite drink, but it can also make them see the stars more clearly at night.... but probably makes them wake up late next morning and skjjsjhskjhsjshs they probably have a bit of fun and talk a lot...... probably the wix can also help her on the potions / coming out with something stupid that has her saying ok i will do it
best boy friend: explanatory. i want it. nothing left to say.
you see this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I WANT THIS SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
reagan. current auror trainee, former magizoologist. [everything’s on fire] it’s fine :). magical creatures enthusiast... could talk about every single creature for hours. brilliant but VERY lazy. the epitome of a libra man. “he’s a parseltongue????? but he is sooooooooo chill!”
best girl friend: i cry everyday please give him a girl bff lksjskjsklsjlksjsk they either met on the train or have known each other since they were kids because of something corny LIKE... their families being friends or something like that (in this case she had to be either a pureblood or a half-blood). bonus if she graduated on ‘86/’87.
drinking buddies???: explanatory because sometimes ree REALLY is a need of like five drinks . ree doesn’t get drunk bc he knows his limits so if the wix loves to get drunk he will be the one taking them home before they set something on fire lskjlskjsk probably have a lot of funny stories together.... BONUS if they used to be ~drinking buddies~ when he was still a student
family friends: self explanatory but this could go to two ways: one) they met through family and actually liked each other! probably act like siblings considering their families were friends. two) they met through family but either one of them or both aren’t the biggest fans of each other. why? idk we can talk about that KSJLSKJSKLS.
delaney.  current healer trainee. the softest girl you will ever meet. there’s always a cute lil skip on her step. didn’t know she was a witch until she received the hogwarts letter bc her half-blooded mom didn’t want her to be a witch SO when she became a ravenclaw student she didn’t know ANYTHING and was dumb af so everyone called her delayed-ney but dont call her pls that it makes her sad. she is trying to stop crying.... she is trying
best friend: PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEE just give her a best friend, either a boy a girl or both! someone who either met an eleven year old and very confused delaney on diagon alley before the start of hogwarts and bc she looked really ????? they gave her a hand and after that they became bffs.... or someone who probably felt bad for her being that dumb in school so they tried to help her through her first year and the friendship just ~evolved~
one-sided dislike: delaney likes everyone!!! she would die for everyone!!! but this certain person makes her roll her eyes and this wix has no idea why someone as kind and bubbly as delaney would give them the cold shoulder! but word has it that once upon a time they used to say really mean things about her or made disgusting comments about a close friend so since then she dislikes them. yeet.
wingman/woman: you see.. delaney doesn’t go out. she is a boring non virgin who does nothing about her romantic and party life so this wix who is a close friend to laney is like , i am getting you to this place and you WILL leave with someone. spoiler: she never does becuse she runs away from whoever is trying to get her attention
mafe. unemployed bitch!!!!! a loud, quirky and annoying bitch! always flying in her broom cross legged no matter where she is. really silly. flower power baby. the queen of gobstones....... she really is that bitch. half of the hogwarts population dislikes her but she DOESN’T CARE
.......the boy who made her realize she was gay: SHSJSLKSKJSKLSJLKS listen... mafe used to be a crazy-for-dick bitch but then she realized she was gay when she was with this certain boy.... a one night stand or a boyfriend. this probably ended up really awkward between them until mafe told him to get over it and be her friend again and he either said yes or no idk yeet LKSJLSJSLKSJ
now the girl who made her very gay: skjslsjlksjsklsj self explanatory. just a pretty witch who made mafe weak to the knees. either something happened between them or not but now that i think about it.... it would be sad if said witch was closeted so nothing happened between them and since then mafe has been like :( my gay heart jksjskjslksjklsj
inspiration: someone who looks up at her stupid, silly ass.... please..... someone look up at her for once............. she’s annoying but she doesn’t care about anyone’s opinions and that’s.. COOL

aaaa i went ahead and ordered Shadow Of Mordor as a total LOTR noob who hates dark soulsy gameplay
This is THE POWER of a good interesting procgen enemy personality system! I’m so addicted to watching videos of it AAAA I’m already preemptively attatched to all the damn orcs and I’m kinda sad the ones I encounter will be totally different but also at the same time excited??
And also randomly I’m excited for like.. tiny shred of LGBT representation?? I mean it’s just a random ‘quirk’ the orcs can have, but there’s a dialogue set that flirts with you while you’re fighting. And there can also be ‘blood brothers’ pairs that can potentially act like grudging rivals, best friends, or even rather affectionate. I mean like.. probably none of this was INTENDED to be positive queer rep or logical worldbuilding given to a historically nonsensically all-male species. But still dammit I will cling to it!! And the flirty rival voice set is definately intended to be read as flirty, it’s just left kinda ambiguous whether its supposed to be seen as ‘funny’ or ‘more evil’ or ‘gross’ or whatever. I don’t think these orcs were supposed to be this endearing, considering how the whole game is about killing them. Seriously I almost cried when I saw this lets player kill an orc and a popup revealed him as a ‘blood brother’ and then his partner spawned in and attacked to avenge him. Noooooo... T_T
Seriously can this just become a trend? Not awkward ambiguously positive or negative queer rep, I mean, but ‘games with complex randomly generated personality AI’. I wouldn’t be buying a game from a franchise i know nothing about if there were more options, yknow! And I really hope someday something like this will happen in a genre that’s like.. sympathetic to those AIs?? I know you can capture the orcs in this game but its like mind controlling them and using them as pawns to kill each other, and you still have to kill a million of them and beat the leader to within an inch of his life before you can capture his brain with your magic powers. It’s like all those edgy theories about pokemon being dogfighting except real! You really do beat the shit out of this guy in hyper realistic violence and potentially cut off an arm or an ear, and then brainblast him into magical loyalty and throw him into literal gladitorial arenas. And even more creepy cos they’re all sentient! I know they’re supposed to be all evil and magically created to be evil and blablabla but its hard to believe when they have all these realistic personalities and interpersonal relationships and just OH MAN I THOUGHT ABOUT HOW MESSED UP IT WOULD BE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE DUDE’S BLOOD BROTHER! like.. wow... their poor allies!! Imagine some guy runs in and stabs you all and you’re trying to defend your boss and then the dude pulls some mojo and your boss switches sides and starts attacking you instead! And even if you flee and survive, you have to see him walk off back to this creepy lil human magician’s camp and fight for his cause and never come back. AND THIS CAN HAPPEN WHEN YOU’RE BASICALLY ORC MARRIED Okay okay anyway the point I am making is that complex personality AIs are ENDEARING and it’d be awesome for them to be playable, and playable in some sort of game that’s.. well.. aware that they’re endearing and treats them as such? Like a pokemon or a standard jrpg or even this same exact thing of being a big evil army but you respect your generals and have friendship points with them and when they die its a sad thing. I WANT TO CHERISH MY ORCS!!!
