Still badgering away at The Chicken Salad War and I did not realize how delighted I was going to be by introducing semi-masc nonbinary Jes Deimos to gallant butch Ylias Lazaar. I don't quite know where their subplot is going to go if anywhere but I feel like it may be somewhere awesome.
"Mr. Lazaar," said a familiar voice, and she turned to see LeFevre at her elbow, looking pleased. "A great success for you, I think."
"Seems to have gone all right, yeah," she agreed. "I heard you were going to crash."
"Alas, I could not -- I ended up invited," he said, grinning.
"And you brought guests?"
"Ah, I didn't mean to bring the royal family down on your head so soon," he said, leaning in. "They are terrible gossips; I should have remembered when I told King Theophile that he would likely share the information. Still, His Grace Gerald is pleased you use his oil and His Grace Michaelis enjoyed the matbucha greatly."
"And you? No constructive criticism?" she asked.
"Not tonight. I have never opened a restaurant myself, but I can understand this is your triumph! And in any case they are small quibbles. I will need to dine here more times before I speak," he replied. Someone tapped him on the arm, and he turned, then nodded at the person standing just behind him -- the one who'd been speaking with the old king a moment before. "Mr. Lazaar, may I present Ser Deimos, who came with His Grace. This is Mr. Lazaar, the chef of the hour. She/her," he added with a smile.
Ser Deimos looked amused. "They/them," they said, holding out a hand. "We're honored to be able to attend -- I don't think we realized when Gerald told us he was going that it was your soft open."
"It's my pleasure. Not everyone gets to feed the royal family on their first night," she replied, bowing over their hand. "And you're an ornament to any dining room."
Deimos looked delighted. "Thank you, that's kind of you to say. If I'd known the food was going to be this good I'd have scared up a party. I have a lot of friends in from out of country at the moment."
"Well, we open reservations tomorrow morning -- but for the royal family, I can set aside a table," Ylias replied.
"Don't, just yet," Deimos said, looking around. "I'm thinking more of a party. Could we rent the restaurant?"
"The whole restaurant?" Ylias asked, blinking. Simon looked smug.
"If not, that's fine -- we'll take the offer of a table -- but my son's graduating next week, and we were thinking of a group dinner the night before. Simon here is catering the night of," they added. "It'll be twenty or thirty people, and some of them have been doubtful that Fons-Askaz could live up to New York, foodwise. Yes, I felt the same," they added, catching Ylias's expression. "The only thing Fons-Askaz can't offer that New York can is the pizza, and only because our Eddie hasn't got the time to open a pizza restaurant."
"I hadn't..." Ylias fumbled slightly. "I'm sorry, we have a catering menu but I hadn't arranged any kind of contract for renting the space. It'd need to be a handshake deal and I couldn't quote a fee off the top of my head."
"Of course, I threw this at you with no warning. Here," they said, reaching into their pocket for a wallet and pulling out a card. "Email or phone is fine. If you can send me a proposal by Sunday, I can make a deposit on Monday. I'm comfortable with an informal deal as long as we have terms written out over email. If you don't feel ready, just let me know -- we'll definitely be back regardless."
"I'll be in touch," Ylias managed. Deimos gave her a bow and a smile, and retreated to their table.
[Then, later]
As they left Plate & Press, full of good food and possibly slightly tipsy, Jes leaned against Michaelis's arm and said, "Holy shit."
He gave them an amused look. "Yes, the food was very good. Nice space, too. I can't remember the last time I had such a pleasant evening out."
"Well, yeah, but I meant the chef," they said. He glanced at them, frowning.
"The Lazaar fellow?"
"Lady, I think. Uncertain, actually. Butch, possibly. She/her but Simon called her Mr. Lazaar."
"I noticed her, but I didn't see anything particularly unusual. Why?"
"I love you to bits but you're hopeless," they said. "You really didn't think she was hot?"
"I don't form opinions about sex appeal, generally," he reminded them. "Present company excepted."
"Well, she is hot in a very specific way -- like you, actually, sort of masculine and chivalrous -- and she called me an ornament to her dining room. I may have had a little moment."
He laughed. "Oh dear, am I going to have to fight a chef for your favors?"
"No, it's just nice to know I still got it."
He kissed the side of their head, affectionate. "You're an ornament wherever you go, but I'll make a note to remind you of it more often. Seems she's making a stir -- Simon likes her also, I think. Sometime soon we're going to have to kick Gregory and Eddie out of the residence for an evening, and I think I'll recommend that place for dinner. Gregory loves Tunisian food and I think Eddie would find a lot to interest him."
"You just want to spend a whole evening cuddling babies," Jes said.
"Joan and the twins all require the benefit of my wisdom on a regular basis," he said. There was a wolf-whistle directed at them from somewhere over their heads; some young wag, out on the second-floor balcony of a small hotel, clearly getting an early start on Pride. She waved a pink-and-blue flag in their direction.
"You can't have him!" Jes called.
"I was whistling at you!" the girl called back.
"I'll take him," her friend offered from the chair next to her.
Michaelis chuckled. "Drink some water, young ladies, or you'll be in no condition for the parade this weekend," he called.
"Vodka's sixty percent water!" someone on another balcony shouted, and someone else yelled for everyone to keep it down, and the discussion went on without them.

hahaha hey you guys guess what. you'll never believe it. got the guy who's in charge of my fraud case on the phone and he was like "who'd you give one-time security codes to yesterday" and i was like "the guy who called me from the fraud department after they noticed a weird login in florida??" and he was like "that was the fuckin hacker. you got got. IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!" i handed my entire savings over to a fucking guy on the phone on a silver platter. like some kind of fuckin rube. bro
#IT IS OK THOUGH I HAVE BEEN SORTING IT OUT#account is LOCKED DOWN! card is DELETED! fraud paperwork has been FILED! i have requested a fraud alert AND credit freeze#from the NATIONAL CREDIT BUREAU!#a friend of mine is taking me to MAINE next saturday to go to the BANK! i sent an email to my landlord asking if i can pay rent by CHECK!#i went to my other bank and deposited my BONDS! so i have some MONEY! to pay RENT!#i also got a new debit card from them. and made sure i could use my old checks.#i also bought some STAMPS while i was out and a BIRTHDAY PRESENT for a FRIEND#now i am going to start switching over some auto deposits#so when i get my paycheck on tuesday i will actually get it.#i feel so STUPID but i think i have done all i can to fix this. i am feeling better about it#by next weekend i will have my money again. it's all fine#and hopefully next time i will not get got so easily. lol.#anyway dont get got by people pretending to be your bank i guess. i did think it was weird how many questions they asked but..#they ALWAYS ask lots of questions at the bank!!!!!#i got a text message FROM the bank saying they would be calling me soon and then the next call was from the scammer#and then like a half hour later got one from the bank and was confused bc they'd just 'called me'#anyway. it'll be fine. scary for a while but at least i have things i can do to make it better. it's all good#genuinely feeling like i ought to take out like a thousand bucks cash and keep it in my desk to replace my bonds tho tbh hahah#just in case something like this happens again. you never know. what would i have done if i DIDNT have those yknow#ok thank u all for being along on this journey with me

things are picking up in my job search hell yeahhh
#one of the companies i interviewed with on wednesday wants to schedule a second interview!!!#AND another company reached out and was like:#“so funny story. we canceled the position you applied for lol. but we think you're cool wanna talk about other opportunities”#and it was a personalized email not an automated rejection. i've gotten automated emails that are similar#this one was from an actual person lol#i haven't heard back about the company i interviewed with on tuesday which is my top choice atm but that's fine#that's the company that didn't reach out until a month after i applied so i'm guessing they just move slowly#the job i'm having a second interview with said they want to move quickly. if i get this job it'll be within the next 2 weeks#i'd be taking a slight paycut but that's fine. i asked for the salary i was paid last year so it's not some super crazy low salary#(my current salary was slightly higher than the max range in the job listing that's the only reason i lowballed lmao)#it's an interesting company. and it's headed in minneapolis and they apparently fly the team out there sometimes which is neat#m.txt

working alone at the location im usually in with my annoying coworker, and i had to change out every SINGLE trash can in the office because they were overflowing with garbage. meaning she didn't even go around and clean them out throughout the week

aghh everybody keeps asking me to consider doing More Things on wednesdays and i don't know if i can do any of them 😥
#dept head asked me to consider adding another class to my schedule. and it sounds super cool#music theory genre studies seminar. aghh#the course says it's offered on a rotational basis but idk when it'll be offered next so idk if this is my one shot or whatever#but i would have to redo my office hours schedule to fit it in. which is annoying for me and my coworkers :/#and the (redacted) band rehearses wednesday evenings. and i COULD make it#but that would be a third weeknight out of five i'd be busy all day#and pack both a dinner and a lunch for myself on the go. aghh#i could probably do one or the other though it'd be A Lot. doing both seems insane#the smart thing to do is probably turn down either. but aghh. fomo :(#i like playing and the class sounds cool!!#but gd i need downtime. and i need time to do homework for my existing classes.#aghhhh#well. i think tomorrow i'll email the prof of that class and ask for more info about it#and i'll talk to my coworkers about potential schedule shuffling#and i'll talk to dan when we get coffee bc man i could use the counsel of a fellow oboist about all this LOL#kindred spirits and all#i wanna talk about me

why does the college have a seperate thing for getting your name changed on school records and getting your username for various school shit changed. why would the latter not just be done automatically when you submit the legal name change
#They were like 'oh it looks like you never opened a ticket asking for the username change I'll open one now'#and tbf I don't think I was looking for it at the time#but I don't think anything on their website or forms mentioned anything about doing some other thing for that#I guess maybe it woulda been done automatically if I was a student at the time? but still. very weird to have to deal w/that now#anyway. apparently they only do the changes between semesters so it'll be fixed on ~December 14th#and I mean I don't even start 'til early January so. works for me#also. can I just say how much I fucking hate having to do this over the phone.#I sent an email first explaining the situation and someone was like 'sure! but we gotta do it over the phone so we can verify your identity#so I call the next day and have to reexplain everything to some guy who just did Not understand what I was talking about at first#and apparently managed to mishear me saying I submitted the name change in 2017 as saying I submitted it 'several months ago' ?????? how#college stuff

#tried to arrange an appointment for internet for the new place#went through the whole thing of arranging it with one provider#only to realize after doing it that I didn't get an email for it#and I signed up immediately after so it'd be linked to an account but the site was having SO much trouble#and now I literally do not know if I have that appointment or no because I can't find it. anywhere. no confirmation#so now I have to try to cancel it so they don't show up unexpectedly but customer service is no longer open#so it'll be for tomorrow. an annoying call to make just to check if it went through at all. and then be like. cancel it#but I just. why. why did I go through all the steps already instead of waiting. i didn't even particularly want to.#I just went through on autopilot to see what the next page would say and now I have to undo it#I hope the current inhabitants don't get a letter about this that would be awkward#I hate this. I was not made for this. idk how to do anything. tonight is not going my way.#bien rambles

oh I love feeling somewhat hopeful and excited about academia again :( I just have to get through this hellish year and then next year should be so much better. KNOCK ON WOOD.
#tbh my term is basically over i just have to write fourish essays and then do an exam#but it's so hard to get the motivation to do them i just feel so far behind after Everything that went down#and I'm sleeping ok now (KNOCK. ON. FUCKING. WOOD. ) but what happened with it fully did wreck me#and i went from actually being pretty ahead of everything i had to do to being way behinf#**behind#and btw i asked for an extension and she was like yeah I'll check and get back to you. and then never responded#and it doesn't even go toward our grade. so that essay isn't getting fucking written lol#especially when i have one due worth 80% like be serious...#<- it's worse too because the 20% assignment was due in. you'll never guess when. february. so you can guess how that went#oh and i STILL haven't gotten my shitty february essay back from that professor i emailed either!!! girl HELLO#anyway. hope u enjoyed that tour to my terrible academic life#the thing is. and i don't know if this is worse. when i actually do do the work even when it's last minute etc i do well#like if i just crack down for a day i can get a first in whatever essay. but lately i just can't do it. because of the illnesses.#but it's fiiiiine i have a month and I'll write them and they'll be good and it'll be fine. knock on wood. ��#**YEAR. not term. my term IS over. and then i have my third one next month. I'm sure you don't care about this#but i like accuracy.

just a little update!! bc i feel like it
#i finished compiling the zine last night (yay)#it's technically a proof rn and we haven't sent it out to our contributors yet but!! i wanted to yell about it somewhere#i had a whole crisis exporting the pdf bc i realized the bleed border somehow didn't save into the original file#but thankfully i was able to add it in at the end and bc i had scaled the files correctly i didn't have to modify much#thanks ig i.ndesign /reluctant#was the process frustrating? yes. was it fulfilling though? absolutely. i'm so proud of everyone that participated#also i finally got the confirmation email for the conference i applied for and my supervisor emailed me her congrats w/ emojis ;u;#it's next month. terrifying. but i know at least 2 ppl speaking too so it'll be ok#i'm going first hjdfhs and then i'll show up to support them#i'm on the final part of that project and it needs to be done before i present so.. just a bit more to go#the vibes have been off lately but things are getting done over here#not saying i'm going on hiatus bc i'm still gonna be doodling to stay sane but it's a possibility in the near future#i do have ideas and things i want to post for archival purposes ofc so it will never be radio silence#oh right and i haven't done any of the new quests bc [gestures at above]#note
