Holiday Cookbooks: The Gift That Keeps On Cooking........
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know that I’m not alone when it comes to reading cookbooks similarly to the way one would read a novel. The cookbooks that interest me tell a story about the recipes and the author, or have a unique theme. Who else is a fan of single-subject cookbooks? Those that feature a certain ingredient in each of its recipes.
There are those who follow comedian Rita Rudner’s quote, “I read recipes the same way I read science fiction. I get to the end and say to myself, ‘well, that’s not going to happen.” However, they still enjoy a cookbook as a “prop”, or appreciate a beautiful coffee table book, where not one recipe is used, but the glossy cover has mouth-watering visuals.
This is the time of year when so many cookbooks are released; just in time for gift-giving season. Going through my ever-increasing collection, I picked some for you to consider as a gift for the cooks on your list. I am sure you will find one to buy for the cook-in-you too.
With kids spending more time at home these days, it is important to keep them occupied with fun activities. And, what child doesn’t enjoy spending time in the kitchen, and then enjoying the results of their efforts?  Written for 8 to 13 year olds, “The Complete DIY Cookbook for Young Chefs,” by the editors of America’s Test Kitchen (2020, $19.99)  teaches them to prepare common store-bought items from scratch.  From peanut butter, chocolate hazelnut spread, and apple sauce to bagel chips, cheddar cheese fish crackers, and strawberry Pop Tarts, to vanilla no-churn ice cream, hot fudge, pancake mix, hot cocoa mix, they probably won’t go back to store bought! The symbols for each recipe denote if the recipe is for a beginner, intermediate or advance recipe, and if the recipe requires the use of a knife, microwave, stove, oven or no knife or heat required. I found the pages dedicated to secrets for “Success in the Kitchen,” “Decoding Kitchenspeak,” “What’s Up With Ingredients?,” “How to Measure and Weigh,” and ”Essential Prep Steps,”  provide the perfect introduction to cooking. The “DIY Mixes” chapter details ways for kids to make homemade holiday gifts.
A companion book to the above title, is “Kitchen Explorers: 60+ Recipes, Experiments, and Games for Young Chefs,“ also by the editors of America’s Test Kitchen (2020, $12.99. The workbook format structures at-home learning, making it easy for parents to use the kitchen as a classroom. Experiments using food, interactive games and kid-centered recipes, allow youngsters to practice skills in a fun way. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on science experiments and activities, as I learned a few things along the way.  Experiments include “What Makes Fizzy Drinks Fizzy?,” “The Gooey Science of Melting Cheese,” Amazing Emulsions.” After the experiments are completed, the “Understanding Your Results” helps the learning process. The “For Grown-Ups” chapter, created by educational experts, helps guide learning and connect lessons in the workbook to school curriculum.  With “STEAM,” kids will learn how cooking involves Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.
Bakers and dessert lovers will appreciate “Holy Sweet!: 60 Indulgent Recipes for Bigger, Better Desserts,” by Peabody Johanson (2020, Page Street Publishing, $21.99).  Like the author, I have a sweet tooth too, so it has been added to my collection. This book was inspired by the author’s childhood favorites. Her introduction, mouth-watering photos, fun-to-read headnotes to each recipe, and  the creative creations drew me to the book. Johanson takes pies, cakes, cookies, and cupcakes and infuses them with flavors of cereal, ice cream, candy and booze. Think, Milky Way Pie, Cookies and Cream Ice Cream Bread Pudding, Cap’n Crunch Boston Cream Pie Layer Cake.  And perfect for the holidays, Peppermint Bark Red Velvet Layer Cake. Now don’t you feel like a kid in a candy store?
Brunch seems to have reemerged as a new craze. During the winter months, I prefer eating brunch, especially on Sundays. “Let’s Brunch: 100 Recipes for the Best Meal of the Week,” by Belinda Smith-Sullivan (2020, Gibbs Smith, $24.99) celebrates the meal that isn’t going away. The author writes in her introduction, “brunch just might become the new dinner party.” When life gets back to normal, this book will be a welcome addition to those who like to entertain. In the meantime, they have many recipes to explore. The chapter “Breads & Toppings,” has a recipe for one my favorites, Sweet Potato Buttermilk Biscuits.  Pannettone Grand Marnier French Toast, Brisket –Stuffed Herb Cornbread, with recipes for jams, syrup and flavored butters to round out the chapter. Starters include Smoked Salmon Blinis, plus Jumbo Shrimp and Lump Crab with Vodka Cocktail Sauce. Of course, Smith-Sullivan includes many egg dishes and sides. Desserts run the gamut with Lemon Curd and Gingersnap Trifle, Savory Spice Olive Oil Loaf Cake among others. And what brunch is complete without a cocktail? Pomegranate Mimosa, and Chef Belinda’s Creole Mary should fit the bill.
Cheese aficionados on your list will welcome I Heart Cheese: A Cookbook, 60 Ooey, Gooey, Delicious Meals for Serious Cheese Lovers, by Mihaela Metaxa-Albu (2020, Page Street Publishing, $19.99). The vivid photography of the dishes coupled with the elegant plating will make the reader want to get right to work, preparing the mouth-watering dishes using a variety of cheeses. I found the breakdown of the chapters by type of cheese helpful. Before each chapter’s recipes, there are details and nuances about the cheeses in the chapter with suggestions on how to draw out the best flavors of each cheese. Both sweet and savory dishes are included, such as Ricotta Coconut Almond Cake, Savory Chili and Grana Padano Cookies, Deconstructed Cheese Board Salad, Savory Pancakes with Crumbled Feta and Chives. The recipient will enjoy their journey to cheese heaven with these recipes.
One doesn’t have to be vegetarian or vegan to enjoy plant based cooking. This style of cooking is popular because of the growing interest in healthier eating and sustainability. “The Complete Plant Based Cookbook: 500 Inspired, Flexible Recipes for Eating Well Without Meat,” by the editors of America’s Test Kitchen (2020, $34.99), is the book to help its recipients prepare meals that are not only healthy where vegetables take the center of the plate, but in a tasty and creative way. I found the makeovers of comfort foods quite interesting. For example, PB & J transforms into Sautéed Grape and almond Butter Toast, featuring fresh grapes sautéed with lemon and thyme, topping crusty bread slathered with almond butter. The book gives the reader inspiration to create plant-forward meals that don’t use processed ingredients. And, those beautiful photos are inspiring, as are their renown signature headnotes; “Why this Recipe Works.”
What cookbook roundup list would be complete without one for chocoholics? I am sure you or someone on your list is one. From everyday recipes to more extravagant treats, Sabine Venier, author of “The Chocolate Addict’s Baking Book,” (2020, Page Street Publishing), shares tips and tricks on how to make it easy to incorporate chocolate into a plethora of dessert recipes. Now, who wouldn’t savor S’Mores Chocolate Cheesecake Bars, Zucchini Chocolate Olive Oil Bars, White Chocolate Carrot Cake Blondies, or Sweet Potato Chocolate Cinnamon Roll Pie, or Apple Cider Chocolate Macadamia Toffee? Venier’s flavor combinations are creative and meld well. For those that prefer standards, there are recipes for Soft Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies, Peanut Butter Cupcakes with Chocolate Frosting, Brooklyn Blackout Chocolate Cupcakes and Flourless Chocolate Cake.

5.8 Undersea Restaurant
I’m currently on an epic vacation in the Maldives, staying at the fabulous Kuredu Resort on an all-inclusive package... and yet yesterday I ventured out at lunch on a ferry ride to a neighboring island to pay $250 out of pocket for a 5-course lunch.  Why?  Because it was an opportunity to dine under the Indian Ocean at the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant.
Tumblr media
Upon arriving at Hurawalhi Island Resort, we are escorted along a pier covered by solar panels towards a building at the end of the path.  We are given a complimentary refreshing drink and then guided to a room where we are asked to remove our shoes to descend down a spiral staircase.  As we step down, there are a couple windows where we can see we are walking below water level.  At the end of the staircase, we find ourselves in a 18x5m tube made of 5-inch thick glass separating us from from the ocean.  Upon entering, it is hard to not be in awe or feel like you’re in the middle of your own “Finding Nemo” experience.  On each table is a guide with photos for what to keep an eye out for - I did see about 75%of the sea life in the guide, but there were some surprise guest stars that were gorgeous but I have no clue what fish they were.  My only disappointments were not spotting an eagle ray and a sea turtle.  The beauty and elegance were not limited to only the breathtaking view under the sea - the plating of each course was also well done.
Tumblr media
The first course was tuna tartare with cucumber yuzu sorbet and roe. I loved the pairing, especially the contrast between the the sweet and tart of the sorbet against the savory in the roe. The clever presentation was putting this clear dish on a plate of sand for the whole oceanic feeling.
Tumblr media
Next was seared scallops in prawn and coconut milk bisque, paired with cucumber dill and fried tapioca. The flavors were excellent, though I would have liked a stronger sear on the scallops.  The coconut milk almost overpowered the flavor of the prawn, but there was just enough there to still support and complement the scallops.
Tumblr media
We were then served red mullet in lobster bisque with bean purée and squid ink. The fish was cooked very well though unimpressive by itself, but all the elements on the plate together really transformed the dish into a noteworthy course. The bean purée thickened the lobster bisque while absorbing its flavors, and together added more dimension to the red mullet. On top of that, swirling the bite into the squid ink created a beautiful marbling of the sauce and gave a complete taste of the sea.
Tumblr media
The poached lobster in beurre blanc sauce was one of main course selections. It was light but satisfying. The lobster was the perfect texture, tender not rubbery. 5.8 repeated the cucumber yuzu combination again though here as foam. As expected, it paired very nicely and was refreshing, but I would have liked to have a different accent.
Tumblr media
The other main course option was the Wagyu tenderloin topped with Wagyu cheek confit and then doused with truffle jus upon serving.  While all the courses were wonderful, the Wagyu was a welcome contrast from the seafood we had.  This was definitely a hearty dish and did not necessarily flow as well with the other courses, but it was so delicious that you can’t mind.
Tumblr media
Last but certainly not least was the deconstructed mango cheesecake with coconut ice cream.  This dessert was beautiful but deceptive.  It looked very simplistic, and I wasn’t even sure if it really was cheesecake when served, as it looked only like mango pieces topped with ice cream, fruit, edible flowers.  My first bite was so surprising and revealed the complexity - it really was cheesecake.  As for the coconut ice cream, it was perfect for cutting through the richness of the cheesecake.  This was a well-balanced dessert.
5.8 Undersea Restaurant opened about three years ago and became world famous in that short amount of time.  After dining there, it was easy to understand why.  From the gorgeous views surrounding you to a delicious multi-course meal, the experience is very unique.  Tables are limited, so there are only 3 servings per day - two lunch shifts, and dinner, which becomes a 7-course meal and higher cost of $285.  At dinner, however, you might get to enjoy the sunset underwater and see what sea life may venture out with the sun gone and cooler waters.  Given the high cost, dining at 5.8 may not be an experience everyone would want, but if you choose to go you will get a good meal with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

9 Instagram-worthy desserts you must try in Queensland
We already knew it. But now it’s official. We no longer just look for the best things to see and do when planning a holiday, but also what to feast on.
According to a survey by Hotels.com, 76% of young travellers say foodie experiences on holidays are the most memorable. So, if you love peppering your Instagram feed with equal amounts palm trees, poolside cocktails and decadent treats when on holidays, snap your way through this list of Queensland’s most Instagrammable desserts.
Twix Tacos at Ze Pickle
A deep-fried chocolate bar nestled inside a red velvet pancake? Sounds crazy, but prepare to have your mind blown. The guys at Ze Pickle have filled this unusual creation with ice-cream, brownie salsa and shaved Milky Bar. You’ll never eat a Twix straight out of its wrapper again.
Where: Fortitude Valley, Brisbane and Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast.
DIY Puffles at Hello Mister Frankie
The best part about Hello Mister Frankie’s towering puffles – that’s soft-serve wrapped in an egg waffle cone and stacked with colourful sweets – is that you can create your own. Choose a puffle base, a soft-serve flavour (try Oreos and egg rolls with banana and coconut sprinkle, or marshmallows and TimTams with Hershey’s choc sauce) then go nuts on the toppings.
Where: Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.
OTT Cakes at Tome
Stopping the thumbs of Insta fans around Queensland, the shelves at this Maroochydore café are full of snap-worthy treats – from caramel-filled dark chocolate brownies topped with glazed pecans to lemon meringue pies – but it’s the made-to-order tiered cakes that will make your ‘likes’ go as high as your sugar levels.
Where: Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast.
Loaded doughnut fries at The Doughnut Bar
Brisbane‘s popular Eat Street is where Insta-dessert-dreams come true. The sweetest praise, however, goes to The Doughnut Bar stand – get your filters ready for a bed of hot doughnut fries topped with caramelised white chocolate soft serve, salted caramel crispy bits, caramel and white choc fudge and Kit Kat sticks.
Where: Northshore Hamilton, Brisbane.
Super shakes at Piggy Back Café
The Insta-famous rainbow coffees at Piggy Bank Café are one thing, their super shakes are another (really awesome thing). The ‘Unicorn’ treats you to a tall glass of ice-cream, strawberry and jelly lollies, while the ‘Double chocolate brownie’ is one for the choc fans with ice-cream, chocolate syrup, brownie and cream.
Where: Jindalee, Brisbane.
Gelato at Alowishus Delicious
Sure, you could have your gelato in a cone… or, you could have it atop the ultimate brownie stack! Say hello to the double chocolate brownie stack at Alowishus Delicious topped with their brownie gelato. Mmmmm, rich! But if a cone is more your thing, you’ll have the tough choice of 34 home-made gelato flavours that are just as pretty.
Where: Maryborough and Bundaberg.
Raw Cheesecakes at Blendlove
They say it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and this certainly rings true at Blendlove. Every single one of their raw-esome cheesecakes – like the Ferrero Rocher option – is vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free, making them the perfect guilt-free treats for your feed.
Where: Southport, Gold Coast.
Funnel Cakes at World Famous Funnel Cakes
Housed in a shipping container turned vintage cabaret parlour at NightQuarter, the boys and girls behind the counter here boogie to lounge music while creating sinful funnel cakes. This North American specialty is crispy like a churro, soft like a doughnut, has the sweetness of a waffle and is served with ice-cream and all the trimmings.
Where: Helensvale, Gold Coast.
Waffles at The Nines
Hidden in the old Maroochydore Homemaker Centre, the brekkie desserts at The Nines will have you snapping away for days. Get stuck into the ‘Gimme S’more’ waffles, a deconstructed plate of deliciousness starring Oreo and pretzel crumb, toasted marshmallows, caramel popcorn, vanilla ice-cream and salted caramel and chocolate sauce.
Where:  Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast.

Satu'li Canteen - Restaurant Review
One of the things that you will find in abundance in Pandora: World of Avatar is a sense of the natural and native overtaking the destructive forces of the RDA - the mining company whose poor practices in regards to the native Na'vi were the center of the conflict of the original film. One place that this is very evident is in the Satu'li Canteen, a former RDA mess hall now converted into a Na'vi cultural center. I like story as much as the next person, but what about the food? Read on to find out more!
As I noted before, the atmosphere at the Satu'li Canteen is a blend of cold and industrial and warm and organic. You can see the original structure very clearly - all very practical, clean lines and harsh, white light. There are large windows that do provide natural light, but these seem to hit the woven baskets and other cultural items suspended from the ceiling and wrapped around the newer, organic lamp posts just right to accentuate them well.
Looking around, you get a sense of the history of the place very well... this affect is added to by a series of photographs along the walls.
Including my favorite: this groundbreaking ceremony photo op featuring several Disney elite with giant shovels - including Joe Rohde at the far right. Joe is the lead Imagineer on the Pandora project, as well as the rest of Animal Kingdom, and is kind of my personal Disney hero. One of these days, I may have to do a write up on him and all he's done with the Disney company, but for now I suggest you follow him on Instagram - it's quite enlightening!
Let's face it, though, you came here for a write up on the food, so let's take a look at the menu board.
Starting with entrees - Create-Your-Own Satu'li Bowls, which allow you to put together your own custom creation, with quite a few choices to select from! Also featured are the "pods" - vegetable curry or cheeseburger.
The Kids' Meals are largely the same as the adult choices, with the addition of a dough-wrapped hot dog and cheese quesadilla as choices (though only the bowls are Mickey check meals, which meet certain nutrition guidelines as long as you don't make substitutions).
And lastly... the drinks and desserts. There are a few beer and wine options (is Bud Light technically an import on Pandora?), the wines chosen based on their name, and a couple of beers brewed specifically for the World of Avatar by the Terrapin Brewing Company..
Did I mention the cool floating mountain tap for Mo'ara High Country Ale? Let me do so now: Mo'ara High Country Ale has cool floating mountain taps.
We'll start with the most unusual menu item: the Cheeseburger Pods. The soft steamed bao bun goes very nicely with what you'll find inside: ground beef, mustard, ketchup, pickles, and cheese. As Tabby put it, it "tastes like a fast food burger from when you're a kid, but in a good way." In other words, it's a bit of a flash back to childhood, but with higher quality ingredients and far less grease. The root vegetable chips are crisp and tasty with just the slightest hint of spicy heat and the slaw adds a nice bit of freshness to the dish, as well as the unique "pop" from the yogurt balls, providing a kind of second "dressing." Definitely a recommended dish for those feeling like trying something a little on the different side (despite the fact that it is, in fact, a deconstructed, then reconstructed, cheeseburger.)
Next up: a Satu'li Bowl with Slow Roasted Roast Beef, Quinoa and Vegetable Salad, and Charred Onion Chimichurri. The beef in this is perfectly cooked: tender and juicy. While I loved my little burger pods, I was admittedly a little jealous of that beef and stole a bite or two. The quinoa and vegetable salad was good, though nothing terribly exciting, but it blended nicely with the same slaw from the burger plate. The chimichurri added the right amount of herbal spice to really bring the dish together nicely.
Here we have the Blueberry Cream Cheese Mousse. I rather liked the presentation on this one - very well themed while not being too "out there." It was topped with a shaving of white chocolate, a dolloped meringue, and a very nice passionfruit curd to add a bit of flavor and texture. The cream cheese mousse itself had a strange (but not bad) texture of "not quite cheesecake, not quite bagel spread," but definitely satisfied the sweet tooth without being too heavy or sugary.
Speaking of sweet, on the right you'll find the Dreamwalker Sangria - a white sangria with a hint of Blue Curaçao. It's quite sweet, but not overbearingly so, and has a nice little alcoholic bite to it. On the left is Hawkes' Grog Ale, which was mildly hoppy with just a hint of fruit that I could not identify, though I'm fairly certain that green color isn't entirely natural. It was a decent beer and a bit of food coloring I was okay with ingesting for a bit of themed fun.
The experience we had at Satu'li Canteen was positive enough that we returned the next day to try the fish (top) and tofu (bottom) in bowls with the black bean vinaigrette - both also quite excellent, having similar slightly crispy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside textures, very lightly spiced. The black bean vinaigrette added a soy sauce-like character to the flavor profile and worked well with the somewhat nutty mixed whole grains and rice. With the tofu, Tabby got the red & sweet potato hash, which in my opinion probably would have complimented the beef a bit better, but overall was quite good.
All in all, I definitely give Satu'li Canteen a resounding thumbs up. The cuisine blends the familiar and the different very nicely, while also keeping with the story of Pandora by not exactly adhering to any one particular culture, blending things to portray both the diversity of Earth ex-pats who moved to the distant world and the world that they now call their home. If you're looking to try something exciting and adventurous on your trip to Pandora, be sure to make your way over to Satu'li Canteen! Until next time, everyone, stay magical!

Ready to get artsy! ❤
Yesterday was one of the best days of 2019 so far, because I ended up having the same day off as my work friends which basically never happens! We made plans a couple weeks ago that we would head to Epcot to explore Festival of the Arts together and I was so excited! This was also my first Disney day in 2019, so I couldn’t wait to get back to the parks!
Full transparency, Festival of the Arts is actually my least favorite of all the Epcot festivals (honestly…maybe even my least favorite WDW special event in overall…oops), but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy it! I’m a full supporter of Epcot having year round festivals and I think over time Festival of the Arts can grow into something spectacular, but it just hasn’t caught up to the others yet. One thing I do love about this festival is that it’s the only special event in all of WDW that I’ve been to every year of its existence, which is pretty awesome. I’ve enjoyed watching it grow even over the past three years and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for it in the future (but it’ll never be Flower & Garden, just saying).
Enough rambling, let me dive into our day! When I first got to Epcot, I immediately noticed that the parking lot was pretty empty which was awesome! Over the weekend I had seen photos on Twitter of the line to get into the parking lot and it looked like New Year’s Eve, so I was thankful that we didn’t have that experience. I walked into the park and met up with Jimmy, who was the only one of us that was on time (haha). We walked through Future World and stopped when we got to the entrance to World Showcase, because we got a text from our friends Hoa and Lisa saying they were here! Once they found us, we started our loop around the world.
The first booth we stopped at was the Pop Eats booth and as soon as we started reading the menu, my eyes darted to the bottom where the drinks were listed. #RainbowSherbertGlitterDreamAle immediately caught my eye and I knew I had to get it! I’m not normally a fan of beer and definitely prefer hard ciders, but it sounded right up my alley and it was only $4.50 (the least expensive price point for any alcoholic item at a Disney festival) so I decided to go for it. It was pretty good! It had a similar taste to the grapefruit beer that they serve in Germany, though not quite as good. I don’t know that I would order it again, but I’m happy that I tried it. And let’s be real, the main selling point of this item was the word “glitter”, which the drink surprisingly delivered on.
The glitter was basically nonexistent in the first photo with the side view so please excuse the rather terrible second photo, but if you squint you can kind of see the flecks of glitter in it. It was the most princess-y beer I’ve ever had and that was good enough for me!
We stopped to look at the menu at the Painted Panda in China and were all interested in the Dragon & Phoenix (spicy shrimp with spinach noodles), but it was $10.50 for what appeared to be a very small serving so we decided to pass on it for now. The next stop we made was at the Cuisine Classique for the Red Wine-braised Beef Short Rib with Parsnip Purée, Broccolini, Baby Tomatoes and Aged Balsamic, which for all of my friends was the highlight of their Festival of the Arts experience. On our first Disney trip as a group (last year) we went to Festival of the Arts and they all ordered this item and fell in love with it, so they were beyond excited to come back and have it again. I’m a pretty picky eater and don’t like any of the side items that come with this dish, so I skipped it, but if you’re not as picky as me I would highly recommend trying this solely based on all of my friends’ reactions!
Our next stop was The Artist’s Table where Hoa ordered the Beef Wellington with Mushroom Bordelaise, Fennel Cream, and Roasted Baby Vegetables. All I know about Beef Wellington is that Gordon Ramsay is famous for it and has talked about it on MasterChef before, but the whole puffed pastry thing is not for me so this was another item I skipped. Hoa said that the beef was overcooked, but that it was good.
We ended up going all the way back around to Mexico after that to El Arista Hambriento, because Hoa had seen the Chocoflan earlier in the day and was fixated on getting it. He said it was too much choco and not enough flan and that he wished it was a chocolate flavored flan instead of being half flan and half cake, but again, still said it was good. Lisa also got an item here – it was a dish that had a lot of black beans in it, but I’m unsure of what it was. Again, I’m a picky eater so these items didn’t appeal to me.
Something we were thrilled about throughout the day was that the park was really empty and we were able to find tables to eat near every single kiosk we visited! We didn’t have to resort to eating on a trash can at all! Near Mexico Hoa started to eat on a trash can, but we almost immediately found another table near by. It was a festival first for me and it was great because I love a chill Epcot day!
After we finished in Mexico, we headed back to Future World. The wait for Soarin’ said it was only 35 minutes, so we headed over to The Land. Much to our surprise, we didn’t even wait that long before we were boarding! We literally walked right on from the beginning of the queue to the pre-show area, which was amazing and something I’ve never experienced before. Something else shocking was that there were two empty seats next to me on our flight and they didn’t fill the row behind us at all! It was really nice and a great first ride of the day!
After that, we went to our Mission:Space fastpass. Much to Hoa’s disappointment, we went on the green side but we still had a nice time! Weirdly enough our wait was longer for Mission:Space with a fastpass than our wait was for Soarin’ without one, but it still wasn’t too bad. We headed over to Spaceship Earth next. Hoa had never been on it and he tends to not be the biggest fan of dark rides, so we were all interested in his reaction. Jimmy and I kept making jokes about all of the animatronics along the way and couldn’t stop laughing when the ride stopped multiple times (especially when it stopped while we were going backwards). I always think the photos on this attraction are funny, because it’s never actually my head no matter what I do. This time it included a ton of black space around my head, but in the past I’ve gotten my forehead cut off or large parts of my hair included as part of my face. I’m hoping when it goes down for refurbishment that this is something they fix.
We had a while to kill before our Test Track fastpass, so we headed back to World Showcase to get a few things we missed at the front. Hoa and Jimmy got the deconstructed strawberry cheesecake from the Deconstructed Dish, Lisa got the poutine from the Refreshment Port, and I got the lemon and blood orange tart from Decadent Delights. Everyone was a fan of their dishes. I think my tart may be one of my favorite dessert items from any festival and definitely my favorite item that I had at Festival of the Arts this year. It’s also SO PRETTY (basically edible art, haha).
The red and green pieces in the back were white chocolate and the circular disk in the middle was like candied sugar. The purple little blobs were crunch meringues and there’s also some candy pearls and blueberries as well. For the tart itself, the main part tasted very similar to a key lime tart (though obviously lemon) and underneath there was a layer of blood orange jam (maybe not specifically jam, but a very similar consistency). It was delicious and I’m so happy that I got it!
Once we finished all of these dishes, we headed to Test Track where something magical happened; we got our own car! It was such an awesome surprise and I was so happy that we wouldn’t have strangers to ruin our photo! It was really chilly out as well, which made it feel like we were going faster than normal when we broke outside. It was fantastic!
not the best photo since it was dark out already, but here are my sad churros.
Before we left for the day, we made one more stop at Taste Track for the paintbrush churros! I was so excited for these from the first time I saw the photos and I couldn’t wait to try them. I’m always jealous of the cute seasonal churros Disneyland gets and I was happy we were finally getting something similar. The line was pretty long for the kiosk, which I should’ve expected since this item has been popular. I was surprised when I ordered to see that they hand dipped the churros into the white chocolate at the time they were ordered, which I didn’t expect. That being said, these were TERRIBLE. I’ve never been so disappointed with a food purchase at Disney. My churros were cold and hard as a rock. I had literally two bites and threw them away. 😦 Not all was lost though. Jimmy ordered the lobster mac & cheese and said that it was decent, so at least our entire experience at this booth wasn’t horrible.
We were all pretty tired at this point and made our way to the exit. It was such a lovely day at Epcot and I’m so happy I got to share it with some of my favorite people! 🙂
  ♥️ – Jessica
Epcot International Festival of the Arts 2019! Yesterday was one of the best days of 2019 so far, because I ended up having the same day off as my work friends which basically never happens!

The Ultimate Guide to Vegan Eating in Montréal
No meat? No problem! Montréal has got a burgeoning vegan game that’s growing strong reaaal fast. Sink your teeth into the many options that span both the city and the globe, culturally speaking – from luscious creamy pastas to middle-eastern treats and Vietnamese pho and cakes for dayyys.
Montréal’s vegan OG
Montréal’s original vegan success story serves hearty rice bowls and a killer brunch from its a sprawling spot on St-Laurent Boulevard. Reboot on the sunny terrasse with one of the famous Aux Vivres smoothies (the Creamsicle is decadently delish), or a slice of berry-topped cheesecake in one of the blonde-wood booths – you’ll swear you’re eating the real thing. Stop by the takeout shop on your way out for a hotel-room snack.
Live music and vegan snacks
This Mile End spot serves daily live jazz, world music or classical alongside its inexpensive pints and great vegan eats. Café Résonance’s maki bowl is a delicious deconstructed twist on the sushi classic, while the cashew-based grilled cheese is scrumptious, made on liberally (vegan) buttered bread from the nearby Boulangerie Guillaume. All the sweets are delicious too – some of the best cookies in town.
Who needs fish in sushi?
Pescatarians agree: some of Montréal’s very best, most creative sushi is served at this chic vegan enclave on the Plateau. Order Sushi Momo’s tasting menu for your size of group (it’s offered for parties of 2, 4, 6) for the full experience: from the crispy centred Dynamite roll to the spicy jackfruit sushi (their answer to spicy tuna), it’ll all leave your taste buds amazed. Reservations are necessary at this hot spot.

Lazy-man’s Chinese buffet
Get the buffet experience without leaving your table at this mock-meat palace on St-Denis. The General Tao at Yuan Végétarien is honestly tastier than the chicken version, while the sesame beef will have you wondering if you’re being punked and this is really meat. (You’re not.) Pay one flat rate at dinnertime and the waiter will bring you endless mini-plates of your dishes of choice. Recreate the experience at home thanks to the vast selection of mock meats in the store section near the exit.
Une publication partagée par Vegan Rapide (@veganrapide) le 17 Mars 2017 à 12h17 PDT
Pizza and burgers and ice cream, oh my
Satisfy your cravings at this little joint on Sherbrooke Street W. in NDG, where the all-vegan pizzas are served on shiny silver stands. Share a signature Vegan Rapide pie with friends at one of the outside picnic tables in the summer, or at the couple of seats indoors in the winter – though most people do take-out. The burgers, served on fluffy pitas and topped with signature sauce, are also a decadent delight – and don’t forget the vegan soft-serve for desert!
Healthy for the heart and soul
Head to Dollard-des-Ormeaux to refill on health-food ingredients and grab lunch at the lunch counter right at the heart of the store. The selection of sandwiches, salads and baked goods at Healthree is always mouth-watering, with the kale and quinoa salads at the top of their all-star list. While you’re there, peruse the large health-food store and its fridges packed with interesting nut cheeses and vegan sweets. The organic produce is also worth the trip.
Raw food reinvented
This local chain of raw food restaurants is so successful, it’s got 10 locations, its own cooking school and a widely-distributed product line. Crudessence is famous for its delish smoothies (the maca-caramel one is a winner), and its spring rolls or seaweed wraps make a nutritious, flavour-packed lunch. There are also meals of the day that astound with raw food’s creative capacities, and desserts like the raw chocolates and lime-avocado pie that are sure to please the palate.
Fully loaded falafels and cookies
Crunchy fried balls of goodness rule here, whether it’s the classic Israeli-style falafel, the nouveau falafel or the vegan twist on shish kebab. All the sandwiches at local chain Panthère Verte come on fluffy pitas, served in either half or full sized – and don’t forget to try the sweets! Some of the city’s most delicious vegan cookies live at Panthère Verte (the cherry-studded Cachewy is a knockout).
Une publication partagée par Falafel St. Jacques (@falafelstjacques) le 16 Févr. 2017 à 5h02 PST
Killer vegan shish taouk
This humble lunch counter in Lachine couldn’t be more authentically Israeli if it were on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv. The most notable difference is that everything at Falafel St-Jacques is vegan (except for some package foods sold the spot that are vegetarian). Try the amazing, greasy, satisfying vegan shish taouk, or any of the other mock meat offerings (most are made with mushrooms), served pitas baked right on the spot. That said, the rainbow-coloured salad bar and the eponymous falafel are the real stars of the show.
Inventive vegan cuisine
Take your vegan game up a notch at this fancy spot in Mile End where invention is always on the menu. Invitation V is a good spot to impress a vegan date, or to brunch the next morning (wink-wink), especially for the vegan omelet stuffed with luscious hollandaise sauce and tons of veggies. The internationally-inspired cuisine here is always creative and responsive to themes, whether it’s Burger Week, Restaurant Week or sugaring-off season.
Une publication partagée par Matthieu Casanova (@mcsnv) le 30 Juil. 2016 à 20h51 PDT
Cozy spot + comfort food
A casual Mile End hole-in-the-wall with yummy soups and sandwiches that opened before vegan was chic. La Lumière du Mile End is a great spot to nosh on quesadillas and catch up with a friend over a nut-milk latte before shopping and exploring the neighbourhood, or to grab a sandwich to-go for a picnic later. Don’t expect the swiftest of service, but it’ll come with a smile and the taste of that burrito will be worth the wait.
Fast food done right!
This fast-food chain is spreading like wildfire, which is a great thing when you want an alternative to the golden arches. Because though the food is fast at Copper Branch, it’s all got a healthier twist. Dive guilt-free into the poutine made with oven-roasted fries, vegan cheese and a rich mushroom gravy – or choose from a whole whack of healthy rice bowls, and an impressive selection of burgers. The shiitake teriyaki is a fave.

Decadent, delicious pastas
The creamiest, cheesiest mac and cheese you’re ever likely to taste – we kid you not – lives at this Plateau restaurant. It just happens not to contain any actual cheese! The changing menu has a comfort-food bent with an Italian twinge at Vegano, but you’re just as likely to bite into a massive burger than a bright plate of puttanesca. One thing’s for sure: you’ll come out of there fully (and we mean full) satisfied.
Authentic (meat-free) Thai
Close your eyes and you’ll swear you’re eating actual crispy duck and this all-vegan Thai mainstay. ChuChai has graced the Plateau with its sophisticated cruelty-free cuisine since before Linda McCartney made vegan matter (or thereabouts). They keep the menu updated with dishes that are ever more delicious, including fan favourites like rich peanut dumplings, chewy pad Thai and decadent “beef” with eggplant and basil.

Vegan Vietnamese food?
Yes, son! Finally somewhere to enjoy this fresh and fragrant cuisine without the usual undesirables. Munch your way through Pho Da Son’s stupendous spring rolls free of fish sauce and other animal bits while you ponder the many options at the buffet-style counter. There are curries, mock-meat stir-fries and specialty dishes like stuffed crepes – everything we’ve tried has been aces!

Top notch nosh, day and night
A fun spot for a saucy date or a lazy brunch (all week, any time of the day) in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. Antidote offers exciting veganized comfort foods and a top-notch organic wine list. Dig in deep with menu stars like fried chicken and waffles, three-cheese mac’n’cheese, crunchy crusted seitan, pulled “pork” poutine and the vegan Big Mac – hey, we never said it was healthy.
Une publication partagée par Cafe Juicy Lotus Official (@cafejuicylotusofficial) le 4 Févr. 2017 à 19h48 PST
Vegan burgers, soups and basics
You’ll find no-nonsense world-type cuisine at this NDG spot, with lots of great to-go options for lunch in the nearby park. Satisfying pasta salads, rainbow-coloured soup jars, spicy samosas and high-stacked veggie burgers (plus a range of interesting products in the onsite shop) make Café Juicy Lotus a go-to resource for vegetarians (almost everything here is vegan, but a handful contain eggs or dairy) in the west end of the city.
Une publication partagée par Aïda’s Flaws & All (@aidasflaws) le 3 Févr. 2017 à 8h46 PST
Yoga + breakfast = heaven
Get your downward dog on before grabbing a bite at this Plateau yoga studio-slash-café. Gorgeous looking smoothie bowls are a specialty at Bélem, especially acai bowls packed with antioxidants – they were one of the first spots to offer them in Montréal. The oatmeal or homemade granola are delectable, as are the coconut-milk lattes and chai teas – truly comfort in a cup that’ll make any day start right.
Une publication partagée par Myriam (@mydery) le 10 Févr. 2017 à 9h25 PST
Plant-based shwarma, ho yeah
This shwarma counter in Laval is well worth the drive up the 15 – vegan Mediterranean food at its best! The falafel are crunchy, large Lebanese-style patties of goodness, the seitan shwarma and shish taouk is packed with satisfying flavour and the creative specialties, like the sliders, the Philly cheese-steak or the ooey-gooey quesadillas, make 57Cals a new favourite in Greater Montréal. (For a really special treat, try the spicy-fries poutine – what a kick.)
The prettiest sweets of all
Gluten-free soy-intolerant nut-allergic vegans, you’ve died and gone to heaven at this chic Westmount bakery. Nestled on tawny Victoria, the ultra pretty white-and-pastel Petit Lapin makes glorious cakes, cake-pops, cream puffs, cookies, madeleines and more without a trace of common allergens. The cakes are true statement pieces (hello, blue ombré triple-decker chocolate!), so expect oohs and ahhs at the next birthday party you pick up for.
The top vegan desserts
Cupcakes with whipped butter(y) maple frosting, fudgy chocolate brownies, berry tarts with crunchy crumble topping… all the good things live here. Sophie Sucrée has been sweetening up Pine Avenue on the Plateau for years now, offering visitors a q2uaint spot to park it and sip tea in pretty floral cups. After you’ve tried a few things on the spot, pick a half-dozen cupcakes for your friend in the self-serve fridge – they’ll love you forever.
Wow-factor vegan cakes
You’d never have guessed raw vegan desserts could be so decadent – and did we mention gluten-free? Rawesome delivers their artfully attractive cakes throughout the city, perfect for your next hotel-room party. The lime-coconut “cheese” cake is something we personally just can’t get enough of – luscious, smooth and rich but without any of the heart-attack heaviness of the dairy version. Other favourites are the crème brûlée cake (mmm caramelly) and the lemon splash – just so darn pretty!
Une publication partagée par La Panthère Verte Restaurants (@lapanthereverte) le 24 Juin 2016 à 2h54 PDT
Want vegan goods on the move?
Don’t miss these vegan options among Montréal’s hot food truck scene!
La Panthère Mobile
Get your falafel fix and your salad satisfaction on the go at La Panthère Mobile’s window, part of the (growing) Panthère Verte empire.
La Wagonette
You’ll find a full, satisfying menu at La Wagonette food truck, including burritos, BTL wraps, veggie sushi, raw truffles and a breakfast parfait.
SmoothFruit
Think smooth at SmoothFruit food truck, where you can order fresh-pressed juices, smoothies, soups – basically fresh, vitamin-dense liquid nutrition.
Lab – Comptoir Roulant
If thirsty is what you are, look no further than this beverage-filled food truck, the mobile version of the popular bar Lab: specialties include teas, infusions and mocktails.

Besides the media tasting, we also have an enriching workshop on birds nest. Learning how to identity the different types of birds nest, differentiation of birds nest with and without bleaching. If you happen to buy chemically treated and bleached, it may increase the chances of your child developing asthma. Whilst pure edible birds nests are rich in nutrients with health benefits for our body. So, it is important to buy the real birds nest without bleaching.
So, how do we identify the real birds nest without bleaching?
The best way is by smelling. Real birds nest without bleaching has a nice egg smell after being cooked. Whilst bleached birds nest has a rather plastic smell.
Visual experience. Real birds nest is very fragile and easy to dissolve in water. It will expand four to seven times bigger than the original size. Real birds nest will have its water translucent throughout the soaking process. Whilst the bleached birds nest have signs of decolouring into the water due to bleaching. I have also spotted that the corner of real birds nest is smooth as compared to bleached birds nest that is thick and chunky.
Or simply visit Nesture for your real birds nest; less the excess worries.

Grazie Ristorante
With high-rise buildings popping up as fast as they can build them, and the major Eglington Crosstown project, Yonge and Eglington is a neighbourhood that is rapidly becoming a major intersection in downtown Toronto. As with any changing neighbourhood, the staples — the places people have always known about, but which relish their under-the-radar reputation — are often the best discoveries. Grazie website boasts that they’ve been operating for 25 years, and it’s the simplicity of their approach — simple Italian dishes done properly — that’s behind that success.
Beet Appetizer by Grazie
Décor
Grazie is unassuming, in a way. It forgoes the minimalist, fine dining approach in favour of a simple — if expected — Italian decor, in a space that has been organized to maximize the number of tables. To some, this might be a turnoff, but I would argue that it is one of Grazie’s strengths, rather. With cliche Italian decor and plenty of tables, the message that the restaurant sends is clear: you’re here to eat, and let’s help you do that.
The walls are styled to look and feel like you are in a small restaurant somewhere in everyday Italy; there are paintings on the walls, and posters for Birra Moretti, and other Italian staples. Vines hand over the entrance to the kitchen. The wood accents give the restaurant an old, worn-in comfort that, as the snow started blowing harder and harder outside, made it feel warmer and warmer inside. Nothing about the decor will sweep you off your feet, but I get the sense that it was never intended to. What’s left is familiarity and comfort.
Atmosphere
Even shortly after 5 p.m., when I walked in, there were small crowds gathering. You can overhear people talking about what they’re going to order "this time," suggesting to me that the atmosphere is a comfortable one, filled with people who feel at home here. As more people file in, this continues: one couple orders without looking at the menu, for instance. Coupled with the homestyle Italian food, it feels distinctly as if you’ve stumbled upon something that others did long before you — not quite a hidden gem, but a restaurant that once you take a chance on, delivers.
Bruchetta by Grazie
Menu Range
If there’s anything better than good Italian food, it’s an enormous selection of good Italian food — and on that point, Grazie makes good. The menu spares nothing, packing dozens of dishes into two pages. The pasta section is split into four categories — divided by sauce type, be it tomato, cream based, blush sauce, or oil — each with almost ten dishes. That’s in addition to an entire pizza section as well. On top of that, there’s a wide range of salads and appetizers. All of which is suffice to say that selection is not a problem.
Appetizers
I went with a staple: bruschetta. ($6.75) Often times, I steer clear of bruschetta, since it tends to be over-toasted and weighed down by too much topping. I was happy to see that the bruschetta here came deconstructed, letting me put as much (or as little) tomato on my bread as I’d like.
The bread came toasted, but still very moist and rich. The topping was simple: tomatoes, oil, and some herbs. Nothing fancy, but the simplicity of it was perhaps its greatest strength. Rather than hide the natural sweetness of tomatoes, Grazie’s bruschetta keeps it front and centre. The herbs serve as a highlight, rather than standing in the way.
The bruschetta was a small order -- only five pieces of toast -- and I ate an entire order myself with ease. Just something to keep in mind.

Main Course
I chose the Tasca dish ($17.50), which was a single large stuffed pasta with ricotta, spinach, and brie. IT was the brie that sold me — I don’t see brie in pastas very often, and it was the perfect cheese to balance the ricotta and spinach. The creamy porcini tomato sauce was full of flavour, and I was given a liberal helping. My only complaint about the dish might be that there was more stuffing than pasta, but I was happy to scoop up any that had fallen out with the bread.
Maybe the best part about this dish was the sauce. Cream sauces can often feel excessively milky, and some of the sharp vegetable flavours washed out. While this sauce was creamy, it also maintained the pointed flavour of a good tomato sauce, while leaning heavily on the richness afforded by the creamy base. There was plenty of sauce, and yet I still wanted more of it. I highly recommend any of the pastas served with the suga di pomodoro cremosa sauce.
Dessert
The desert was the point where it most felt like Grazie was phoning it in. While the creme brulee cheesecake ($8) wasn’t not good, per se, it’s hard to argue that it lived up to the rest of the meal, either. It didn’t taste especially fresh, and while it was a tasty treat, I wouldn’t spend $8 on it again. It felt like the sort of dessert that one could find at a high-end grocery store or bakery.
The dessert menu had a wide range of options, though, and I wouldn’t want to discount the whole of the restaurant’s selections simply based on one dish.
Drinks by Grazie
Drink Options
Like any good Italian restaurant, the staple was the wine list. In addition to a healthy beer selection and what appeared to be a well-stocked bar, the wine list offered a couple dozen wines from around the world, in addition to a sizeable section of Italian wines, beginning at affordable prices, and rising from there. Much in keeping with the rest of the restaurant’s atmosphere, nothing on the wine list felt especially pretentious or contrived — just a good selection of wines.
A shout-out here to the coffee, which though a simple order, carried its weight. After a long day (and some time spent in the snow), a coffee was just what I needed, and Steven, my server, went out of his way to improve upon my "cup of black coffee" order to bring me an Americano with some steamed milk on the side. I’m glad he did, because it was a surprisingly good cup. I am a caffeine junkie, and doing a simple coffee well will always impress me.
Service
It always throws servers off when they serve a single person. I’ve spent time travelling, where eating alone is something you get used to. Truth be told, while I like dining with friends, there’s a certain indulgence to sitting down to eat by yourself. Servers, though, tend to do all they can to try to mitigate the awkwardness that they think you’re feeling. On one hand, I’m used to this. On the other, it can really work to the server’s advantage. Steven, my server, was happy to chat about various things on the menu, improve my coffee order, and chat about the book I was reading. I was never rushed, even though I admit I was taking up a prime table by the window by myself. The food came out at a nice, measured pace, and he was quick to check in to make sure there was nothing else I needed.

Feeling Afterwards
Full, as one should be after a homestyle Italian meal. Though Grazie was a bit outside the downtown core, I was certainly happy I made the trek — Yonge and Eglington is a booming neighbourhood, and it feels nice to have found a restaurant there that I’d definitely return to. Places like Grazie are the best finds, but also sometimes the hardest: it isn’t the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of fine dining, but neither does it have a rugged hole-in-the-wall appeal. What it has is good food, done simply and done well. In a growing neighbourhood like Yonge and Eg, it is sure to gain more loyal diners, and I hope that doesn’t change it one bit.
