this is my element (+ album)
asking me to pick my fave album is like asking an orphan matron to pick her favorite baby boy
thats some weird and cruel circumstances to put upon me i feel like it changes every damn week like a rota
i mean what if my beats misbehave and i gotta put 'em in time out i cant play permanent on that theyre too cute
but yknow what i can show you one thing thats been on my mind lately
===
so when i was a kid we had this skateboard vid by "element skateboards" on DVD
they were this skateboard kit slash apparel company that was all about progressivism and shit and they did these much lauded comp tapes of dudes riding around on their boards and doing the dopest of macho tricks on the shit
flipping it turnways
putting the rock in the house like a big man
we had some of their merch actually
===
so anyways the one we had back then was This Is My Element
released 2007
mostly clips from cali i think and i mean the camerawork is fucking insane on some of those shots
this is gonna sound lame as fuck but i prob spent so many cumulative hours just peelin through the footage and ogling the shit outta it
that framing was tight
===
so you may be asking yourself or me
dave you genuine dicksucker i asked about your fav album not your favorite sordid ass display of smooth dudes hardcore riding and grinding them boards in public dude you have a problem
ok well that wasnt a question first of all so jot that down
but anyways to THAT i say
listen to the music
the whole thing has an original soundtrack of ambient beats
got some abstract hip hop jams, got some more indie stuff, lots of acoustic sampling
HELLA underground
and basically every track minus one is done by sampler beast david p. madson AKA "odd nosdam"
dude is my hero seriously
he is the master of the beat machine i shit you not hes always been kinda my idol on this stuff
aside from bro obviously
===
obviously.
===
anyways he had an E-mu SP-1200 which is a really oldschool sampler invented by dave rossum in the late 80s
revolutionary to the hip hop scene
nosdam had this mega distinct sound to his music that i always wanted to replicate on my own beats
still do
i dont know for sure if he used it on T.I.M.E. but he uses some of the same samples from "vol. 9" which was exclusively SP-1200 so im gonna get a lil j’accuzi on that
it couldve been a boss dr sampler SP-202 though idk
he had one of those
===
so aside from beating the shit out of the pause/resume button to flip my whole cranium at the cinematography or whatever i would also kinda play it on loop to listen to the soundtrack and space out at 2am
the lonely broner seemed to free his mind at night
ok shit broner is good but i didnt mean it like that
that was goofy lets just keep movin
it was the only way i had to listen to it back then but i mean the video is 50 mins long so its basically just an odd nosdam album with accompanying ambient skater sounds and random expletives and whatever
random car sequence
yknow what i dont think people respect enough?
the dude who catches all the "mad stunts yo" on camera
i swear to god at least half the time hes ALSO on a board and that shit is bananas to me
bros gotta be on some whole other level of zen to skate good AND catch all them glamor shots of his fellow skater
thats like an express ticket to the ER imo
the ambulance is already on the scene watching you like an eager crow watches a half dead dog
===
ok gonna go ahead and lay it out flat
not great on a board myself
kinda dogshit at it actually
so maybe im not exactly an arbitrator of skateboard heinousness
but i always kinda liked watching THEM do it i mean who doesnt?
whats an even crazier layer to stack on the "dave" cake is
and dirk told me this because unfortunately it kinda happened post-2009
he would do all these collabs with one of my childhood favorite underground rappers david cohn aka serengeti
surrounded by daves left and right dude even before all the time travel horseshit
thats like
serendipitous as fuck i think!
===
if sburb was just a revolving door of artists called dave that i could bump fists with
instead of other mes in various states of aliveness tending toward extremely dead
i wouldve probably given it something higher than 2 stars on my TGN review
===
so yeah you ask me my favorite album its T.I.M.E. by odd nosdam i guess
bump that shit on a walk your mind will go places unknown to man

hi kora as you are the resident horror expert and i have never watched a horror movie (at most ive been in the room as a kid while my cousin watched them, but never for more than a few minutes) do you have any recommendations for someone who gets scared easily and doesnt really like feeling afraid? i like watching people play horror games sometimes but it's easier to have the scary elements filtered through their reactions and commentary. I'm mainly asking because I'd like to watch horror movies because I think I'd enjoy the narrative elements of it but if i get too scared i wouldnt be able to watch a whole movie. you don't have to answer this if you don't want but if you do then thank you!!
also if this helps i mainly have trouble with heavy gore/body horror (some is fine just not like. the whole movie.) and jumpscares (idk if those are really common in horror movies but I know theyre a staple of horror games)
oh hiiiiii <3 delighted to be your little horror gateway!! im not sure if youre looking for slashers or something a little plot heavier, but thats my favorite subgenre, so forgive a but od a bias towards them. oh, and yes, most movies do have at least one big jumpscare :( theyre not my favorite kind of horror at all so none of these are chock full of them, but almost every horror movie’s got a few. you can check them on wheresthejump if youre super worried!!
first, just about anything from the 70s or 80s probably wont scare you all that much because of the limitations in quality. i would stay away from cronenberg if body horror isnt your thing, but theres lots of fun to be had in those decades that either isnt super gory or didnt have the budget/tech to be disturbingly gory to our modern eyes! im also um…..desensitized to movie gore, so take anything i say with a grain of salt. okay! lets rec!
(these first ones are a little on the sillier side)
- nightmare on elm street
- happy death day
- creepshow
- scream
- an american werewolf in london
- cabin in the woods
- ready or not
- the lost boys
- night of the creeps
(these are less silly, but i tried to keep all really big scares off while giving some nice plot driven ones)
- carrie
- halloween
- night of the living dead
- candyman
- antiviral
- alien
- dawn of the dead
- lake mungo
- the hitcher
- pyewacket
- kristy
and if you follow me then you know im a huge fan of saw, child’s play, IT 2017, and reanimator, all of which i cant recommend enough! but i’m so fond of them that i have no idea if they’re really scary or not…..anyways! thats a little list for you with some that are very common and some that are a little less known, i tried to put a little of everything in there, sorry for my bias against supernatural horror :/ if theres something that looks interesting and you want to know more about how scary it is or the content warnings shoot an ask or a dm!! hopefully this is helpful, i hope you have fun <3

would you ever write some of creature or non human Jaskier? and if you did, what would you most like to write?
!! oooooo.... i could definitely be persuaded, i think. i do really like jaskier as the Human element of their ragtag little team, especially as someone who's ineffectual but kept around out of love-- what he provides is as important as a big scary witcher or an all powerful sorceress or even a warm meal, and that's LOVE!!! :) so i definitely respect a non-powered up jaskier, and am regularly intrigued by him being nonhuman and this not at all aiding his combat abilities, just making him relate to the world differently. but also obviously fae jaskier is fun, and big scary monster jaskier is all good!! ah man there are so many options im having trouble narrowing it down to just one idea...
i usually like character driven stories with a dash of angst, so probably i'd write something where he feels monstrous and pursued, so he hides it from geralt, only for it all to be revealed at the final moment, and it turns out geralt fully accepts him.
or maybe something where geralt discovers what he is and starts getting very monster-fact-nerd-y about it, suddenly geralt is the one with a million questions, and jaskier finds the flipped script endearing.
ooooo or i've always thought it would be really cute to have a fic that'sike, a monster of the week type fic, told from largely outsider POV, detailing geralt and jaskier's little adventures through town. and the longer they stay, the more the townsfolk talk, and start thinking about things, and... hey, hasnt that bard been traveling with him an awful long time? 50 years? 60? 80? more, even? but he doesnt look a day over twenty. maybe it's someone new? but the familiarity, the same name the white wolf's bard's always used... he turns to look at the pack of gossipers. too far away for him to have heard, and when he smiles it's too sly. he winks and a chill shoots up each of their spines. the white wolf's bard, by his side for a hundred years, and never a day over 23. they whisper at what darkness must lurk beneath the surface, but they'll never find the answer. what is he?
(geralt rolls his eyes and scruffs jaskier. "stop teasing the townsfolk." he says as he drags a pouting jaskier away. "but they make it so easy!"
he tells the barkeep at the next town theyre at "you wanna know what jaskier is? he's a Nuisance.", but in a tone that makes "nuisance" sound like maybe it's a species? or like maybe he just finds jaskier very annoying. it's hard to tell. jaskier stands behind geralt's shoulder and brightly proclaims "but im HIS nuisance! :D" which gets him a huff of acquiescence and a strongarming into a gruff hug. no one know what his deal is, but he's mostly harmless... probably.)

modern au red/milo dump while i try to get myself together to answer asks nd work on ATJ:
(tw for alcohol mentions near the end, also this is an EXTREMELY long post, its so long that even after i split it into categorized sections each section could be its own post)
CLOTHING
milo absolutely has no sense of fashion. i feel like this is basically canon - for the styles at the time, he dresses fairly basic, mostly focused on looking put together for his job (definitely dresses aimed more towards how he would like to be treated by his peers, despite his actual position - then again our best example outside of the expedition is when he's about to deliver what he considers the most important presentation of his life, so who knows, maybe he usually dresses like a slob). aside from that his main concern seems like practicality and comfort. his wardrobe is dominated by earth tones - beiges and greens set with white and greys. all of that taken into account, i can see him dressing like this in a more modern era:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
basically- a lot of cardigans, usually collared shirts or comfortable turtlenecks (since he does still occupy a research position at the smithsonian, even if only in title), big ol' coats, khakis and chinos and slightly stiff dress pants complete with ironed creases. i can see him wearing similar clothes outside work, just more comfortable - jeans and knitted shirts, henleys, more turtlenecks, and comfy cardigans over short sleeved shirts. i dont really see him wearing a lot of prints, i think he'd veer more towards solid clothes in lighter colors, but maybe he has a few. hes definitely the kind of guy to think of wearing the single graphic tee he owns as "bold and wild".
im very married to the idea of him wearing converse though. i cant explain it. milo in converse keeps me going in this world
hes kind of broke so i think maybe he got the converse secondhand maybe? or a gift of some kind. aside from the converse i can see him wearing a lot of oxfords and maybe wingtips
i want to see him in a hawaiian shirt so bad. i am losing it at this thought. he buttons it all the way up to his neck like someones awkward dad. milo wears a hawaiian shirt to "let loose". he wears it with like, khakis. or knee length jorts AHHHHDJHDSGJHDSJGh
a tie??? does he wear his hawaiian shirt with a tie???? does he think it makes it look cooler?????????? i am sobbing
red is the COMPLETE opposite. in the canon 1914 setting, red is already very rebellious for an AFAB person of their era- theyre openly a suffragette, they frequently refuse to wear skirts even in public and dress in mens clothes even before they were openly nonbinary, despite not being accepted into the male-dominated research fields and colleges they continue to educate themself with or without help, they purposely aim for an "unfeminine" silhouette when they dress, refuse to wear corsets, etc. (spoiler alert- there's a clear reason they get on so well with audrey in ATJ)
theyre also easily mistaken by people that didnt know them prior to their transition for being just a very small/young cis man- even though they canonically have a very soft "traditionally feminine" face
so basically, in any era theyre set into, red is always gonna aim to be ahead of the curve- both in their personal beliefs and practices and in their fashion. theyre also very androgynous in their clothes, although they tend to aim a bit more masculine (thats partially due to the era though, and having been forced into skirts exclusively for their entire life- i think in a modern setting where its more acceptable for AFABs to dress and act in a less hyperfeminine way, theyd be more okay with a fluidity in their gender presentation).
all that taken into account, i can see them dressing like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
lots of baggy clothes, especially baggy jackets and shirts. they like loose fitting high waisted pants like JNCO jeans, cargo pants, etc but they arent averse to pencil legs. they rarely ever wear skinny jeans or drainpipes though. messy hair is a lifestyle for them- their haircut is definitely home-done
you know how in BICSTLY they used to have really long hair before they cut it? in a modern au i can see them impulsively doing the cut at like 3am and waking milo up at his door cause they screwed it up and he ends up having to help fix it (even though hes literally no better at cutting hair than them. worse even)
definitely have an undercut bob- bob on top, shaven on the bottom layer. they might end up growing their hair into a mullet at some point if they get bored. probably dyes their hair all the time out of boredom and then regrets it later and has to use dye remover.
lots of ripped tights and fishnets, leggings with big loose crop tops, big hoodies, safety pin jewelry and homemade jewelry. maybe some sticknpokes.
all that said, they still know how to dress in a professional situation. since its a modern au theres really nothing holding them back from the education and career they canonically want but cant get in the 1910s, so i imagine they would work at the smithsonian as well, maybe their father helped them get the job? potentially in that case they might be his assistant- after all, he trusts their opinion on artifacts more than anyone else's.
at work you can still very much see the punk/skater/grunge/goth style but its more understated- turtlenecks, high waisted and looser dress pants, lots of black, slightly unbuttoned collared shirts with a loose overcoat and no tie
since i elaborated on milos shoe taste i may as well elaborate on red's: they definitely wear converse as well, probably newer than milo's since their father is fairly wealthy and they can afford it. they also have a doc martens collection. they have a pair of demonias but they never wear them and milo is really the only person to even know they own them, let alone see them in them. they really dont like to wear heels much, but they own a few just to play around with. they have a bad habit of wearing any laced shoes untied, but they never trip over the laces. they also use lace code- their most-worn Docs have purple laces on the right foot and yellow on the left. some of their Docs have (reclaimed) pink laces.
has an extensive pin collection including feminism pins, anti-racism pins, punk-related pins, skater-related pins, and pop culture pins (80s music, modern music, old movies, etc)
MUSIC TASTE
milo's into a lot of older music- stuff from the 50s is his favorite. really into jazz and ballroom style stuff. his favorite band is queen, i think- he likes the old-fashioned sound, the jazz-chamber-ballroom influences, the diversity of their lyrics, and the complexity between the guitar riffs, the basslines, and freddie's vocal runs as well as the vocal harmonies.
sometimes he hums good old fashioned lover boy to red and they two-step in the living room in their pajamas :pleading:
also very into rush. yes, he is a rush guy :pensive:.
also listens to a surprising amount of lo-fi? he really likes stuff that remixes older music with hip hop and lofi elements, like earl grey. nearly exclusively into instrumental stuff but also very into louie zong. he listens to it while he works a lot.
knows a lotttt of foreign artists, especially niche ones. fuckin LOVES casiopea
red's spotify is a goddamn mess. everything from 2000s emo, to classic 70s punk, to post-punk and new wave, to 90s pop, to rap. they cant be easily classified at all
their favorite bands are oingo boingo, prince, queen (they listen to a lot of their harder-rock music, but milo knows theyre into the ballads too. theyll never tell anyone else though), doja cat, lil nas, fall out boy, and billie eilish.
red recites the intro monologue to lets go crazy very seriously to make milo laugh, sometimes. they get very into it with their facial expressions. sometimes it devolves into a full air guitar/keyboard/drum and wild dancing session. milo does not know how to participate in this but he loves watching them have fun with it. sometimes they pull him off the couch to make him dance with them, though
they are a huge sucker for dark pop, vaporwave, retrowave, EDM, hip hop, emo, punk... etc etc. anything that combines any two or more of those genres in an original or interesting way gets their attention right away
there's a lot of sharing between the two of them- even though their music tastes are so different, they like a lot of the others taste, and theyre always up to listen to whatever their partner is playing.
red is a huge softie, and milo has found them more than once listening to or humming something he was playing for them the other day because it reminded them of him
speaking of which- in the 1914 canon, red can play piano. i think that carries over to a modern au, where they could play piano and by extension keyboard. i like to think they experiment with a lot of instruments but i doubt they ever really mastered any others. maybe theyre okay at drums or bass?
they learned to play and sing teo torriatte for milo, as a surprise. when they first performed it for them, they had everything set up for when he got home from work- the lights were dimmed, they had candles lit around the keyboard, they draped stuff in cloth to make it look pretty, they scattered flower petals around. when milo walked in and saw it all, he almost proposed then and there- the only thing that stopped him was that he would kick himself for the rest of his life if he did that without a ring.
HOBBIES/ACTIVITIES
milo is still an avid chess player in this, but i like to think hes in some kind of groupchat or text or discord server for it. he doesnt necessarily consider any of the others in the chat close friends, but he does know them all by name
he tries to get red into chess but they never really get it
he tells them all about the stuff that goes down in the games and they just. do not understand. but they love listening to him get excited about it anyway
"red you're not gonna BELIEVE this, eddie played an italian game on star today! i thought for sure she would see through it since everyone knows it but she slipped and he beat her in like, 13 moves! i wouldnt have believed it if i hadnt been there!"
"yes sweetie please tell me more" (barely disguised pained expression)
red is a skater and a regular at the skate park by the smithsonian
most regulars there know them by name, they can spot a newbie a mile away
they have a sticker of a broken tv with a skull inside of it on the underside of their board, its become recognized as a symbol of them unofficially
since theyre so regular and have been going there a lot longer than most of the other skaters that frequent the place, a lot of what they say is kind of just accepted as the rules
they have a bad habit of lecturing new kids who show up without knee/elbow pads or helmets at the very least. all the other skaters enforce it too. kids dont end up showing up without protective gear very often after their first visit
they brought a first aid kid and left it there and everyone has kept it stocked pretty well without them having to have much input. its kind of just a communal first aid kit
they once drew the broken tv symbol on the inside of a half-pipe and everyone started calling it red's ramp after that
they also started calling the bowl at the center of the park the Soup Bowl and now thats just accepted as the name. some of the newer kids genuinely thought that it was called that by the park and were shocked when they found out it was just a random nickname red gave it one day
theyve brought milo a few times but hes extremely awkward on his feet and could never really get his balance on a skateboard, and quite frankly red is afraid of what might happen if he tried even a low ramp, so he usually just sits at the rim of the bowl while red skates around
everyone knew he was their boyfriend before they even met him. a few of the regulars called him by name right away. one of them was certain red had brought him before.
but no
they just talk so fuckin much about him that its like they already know him
aside from skateboarding, red is pretty good on rollerskates/blades
they tried to take milo to a roller rink once but it was a disaster and they ended up going home, changing into pajamas, ordering chinese food, and marathoning movies till they fell asleep on the couch together. so not a total loss
theyre both very into movies. red is deep into horror and milo likes indie/art movies and just Cannot handle horror at all, but they both agree on old movies, from the 80s and 90s to like the 30s.
red has shown milo some of the classic horror movies and the niche old ones (from like the 40s) since theyre not difficult to stomach
every so often when red brings up wanting to see a horror movie milo is like "aw babe we can watch that tonight i promise it wont be bad" and he genuinely thinks he can handle it this time
he cant
he never can
it is always a lie
red ends up holding him every time and talking him to sleep, but it thankfully never causes like a major panic attack or anything like that
they love going to museums together, of all kinds. they love art museums. they also go to aquariums and aviaries
sometimes they like to go to other history museums and criticise the veracity or accuracy of exhibits/translations, all in good fun of course. theyre never actually being mean about it
SIDENOTES/UNCATEGORIZED
they both used to work at starbucks, when they were younger and before they worked at the smithsonian. they worked at separate stores 2 blocks from each other.
milo cant stand soda or carbonated drinks, red can and will chug a java monster in order to survive a long workday if they must. milo is constantly concerned for their health and wellbeing
they r both lightweights when it comes to drinking. they can split a six pack and both be falling-over drunk by the end of the night.
given the changes in beauty standards people DEFINITELY think milo is more attractive than they would in 1914. cmon. hes a lil twinky nerd. you think people wont eat that up?
he never really catches onto the flirting much though
did u think i would forget ki/da and the others? youd be wrong.
i simultaneously like the idea of something similar to the movie happening, but also just like... ki/da just being a regular person living on the surface. in either case they r all friends still
in the case of ki/da just being a regular person on the surface- i like the idea of atl/antis just being A Place in this au, maybe its a bit of a closed off country though? like, not many foreigners live there and to get there you basically need to be there as a diplomat or a scholar
maybe ki/da visits DC as a diplomat? she is a princess, after all
red meets audrey online cause they both yell at the same misogynistic asshole on twitter
they exchange discord names in the replies of the tweet and tell the guy not to interrupt them while theyre talking in his replies
i like to think red and milo are selected to go on an academic visit to atl/antis (to learn about the culture, with permission of the king), and audrey ends up as the mechanic on the ship during the visit and theyre like (spiderman pointing meme) at each other
red and audrey have so many inside jokes that they basically speak a different language. milo gets some of the terms from context and pop culture (they use "so very" in real life- as in "wow, that shirt is so very.") but he is hopeless to learn all of it
one of their inside jokes is any variation of "milo hot girl summer" and they REFUSE to explain it to him no matter how much he begs
milo wears that iconique tank top on the ship and they say it literally any time he bends over, picks anything up, reaches for anything, moves, BREATHES. he is bewildered and at this point concerned
(in truth, the joke came from red taking a really blurry picture of him in a short sleeve shirt where he looked pretty cute and captioned it "milo's having a hot girl summer rn" and they just could not stop repeating it once audrey met him IRL)
they have a minecraft world. i do like to believe that every so often vinny finds a way in- theyre never sure how- and griefs the shit out of them by blowing up EVERY. monument.
this post is getting long bc im enraptured by the idea of an atl/antis modern au so im cutting it off here but expect WAY MORE later

Bored and thinking about my slasher OC Andy, the Alligator one, and like what her movie arc would look like. The following long ass post details each movie and how good it would be:
Her first movie would be called Gator, releases in the early 80s. It's a suspenseful murder mystery set in Florida that seems to point to the killer disposing of bodies in the swamp for the gators to eat but then its revealed the Killer is killing them with their fucked up teeth so it only looks like theyve been munched on by gators. Andy gets away after being shot a bunch in the end. a solid 8/10 movie, the dialogue kinda sucks
The second movie, which is titled something like Gator II - Birth of a Monster and its a lot like "i know what you did last summer" where a group of now adult friends are being picked off for something they did and it turns out to be Andy seeking revenge for the torment they put her in from her childhood. Andy is arrested in the end but chews through her cuffs and kills the police before escaping. a 4/10, lots of sex scenes between unlikable characters???
Third movie is a clusterfuck, it markets itself as another installment in the franchise but really its a creature feature with elements of the first 2 thrown in. Just called Gator III. HEAVILY rips off Jaws about 30 years too late. The villain here isn't Andy but a congregation of alligators tearing apart a small Florida town, lead by a massive albino gator covered in scars. Andy appears in flashbacks and a house is discovered in the swamp that seems to be where she lived but now is infested with gators. a half rotten skeleton with only one jagged tooth found nearby is implied to be her. 2/10 movie, no one likes it and animals were harmed on set, causing activist pushback
So you know the weird cult plot that happened in the later Halloween movies? The fourth movie, Gator IV - Tooth and Nail does that, retconning Andy's backstory and saying she was groomed by a cult because they see her birth defect as a sign from their demon patron that she will be its vessel. Her remains from last movie are brought back to life in the last half hour as a alligator demon woman that the studio forced the crew to make sexy instead of gross. Effects/makeup for it are practical tho and the movie is considered a 3/10, with some solid kills from the cult throughout and great effects but the pacing sucks and the main cast is awful.
Okay so. Jason X exists, right? Yeah in the late 90s this happens. Titled Sewer Gator. Unrelated to the Andy of the previous movies, a young woman is experimented on in a genetics lab and infused with alligator DNA. She mutates into a fucked up gator woman thats actually gross this time except is 1999 and CGI is the hot new thing and the studio execs cover over all the fun practical effects and makeup with godawful CGI. She escapes the facility and into the sewers of New York where she begins a massacre and continues to mutate until she's exploded with military grade weaponry at the end. a stinger after her death shows she laid eggs but this goes nowhere because the movie makes no money and its never touched again. Surprisingly good actually 7/10, the bluray remaster gets rid of the CG and adds back in as much of the practical footage it can find and it becomes a 8.5/10
The series goes dormant for ten years
The series is rebooted in 2009 with a remake of the OG, except now its called The Swamp. Much more character focused, starting with a herpetologist and a poacher coming to town to help with the alligator problem. Theyre at odds immediately, the poacher insisting the gators need to be dealt with his way but the herpetologist is like "hey these bite marks arent anything like an alligators what the fuck is going on???" the big reveal of the movie is the poacher knows its not an alligator, but his deformed sister who he was keeping locked up until her escape a few years back and he's here to kill her. He's killed in the end by Andy and the herpetologist manages to snare her in a bear trap and get away but when the authorities show up Andy's chewed through her own leg and escaped. 7/10, goes on too long and the reveal exposition is weird and plot holey but audiences enjoy it. Has really good nu-metal on the soundtrack.
The Swamp II comes out 2 years later and sucks so bad. 1/10. The plot takes the Family angle from the last movie and goes full Wrong Turn incest cannibals in the swamps of Florida with it. Weird and creepy and sexual. Andy is there, missing a leg, as the eldest child of this family who serves an insane mother but the movie focuses on her other siblings with their weird deformities let loose now that the "normal" poacher brother is gone. movie heavily implies one of the female characters has sex with an alligator at one point. trash movie, don't watch in a place someone can walk in on you in
Series goes dormant again.
A miniseries drops unexpectedly in 2019. Swamp Diaries. 5 half hour episodes in the style of a found footage film of a group of friends searching for the legendary "Gator Woman of the Swamp." First episode introduces the characters, all likable and well rounded, college age. Second episode is the beginning of the expedition, outlines a lot of the history of the Gator Woman urban legend. Third episode the group runs into actual gators and starts finding weird, Blair Witch esque shit, becoming lost after they have to run from something, the first death happens. Episode four is suspenseful and horrific as the group tries to get home, another person dies. Episode five is the kicker, ending with the reveal Tamara, one of the last survivors, is actually working with the actual Gator woman, her childhood friend who she promised to protect and later on, feed. Ends with Tamara killing the last survivor and telling Andy it's time to go home. 8/10, paced mostly well and very scary, lots of shaky cam but the final twist is a hit with monsterfuckers bc its all but said Tamara and Andy are together.

You don't have to answer this if you don't want to but what's up with the Courtney Love controversy? Why are people accusing her of manipulation or whatever? I'm totally new to this discussion
hey darling!! no worries, I love discussing Kurt & Court bc theyre my surrogate parents and they emotionally raised me when I had a difficult relationship w my Mom and Dad, plus I’m named after Kurt and he’s part of the reason I realized my ~gender~, so needless to say I have a surplus of information on them. Plus their music fucks. anyways, this is gonna be a masterpost-
my credentials(sources I have taken my information and formed my opinion on Kurt & Court’s relationship from if u need to look into them):
-Heavier Than Heaven(Book by Charles Cross, authorized by Kurt’s estate. Charles Cross is a well known grunge/music historian and has literally devoted his life to researching and writing rockstar biographies, including several on Nirvana. One of my favorite books ever.)
- Montage Of Heck(Documentary on Kurt’s life. Produced by his daughter, Frances. I have some heavy criticisms of this film and of the interviews in it, but it does have some reflections on Kurt and Courtney’s relationship that I think are important.)
- Hit So Hard(a documentary on Hole’s drummer, Patty Schemel. Minor discussions of Kurt and Kurt and Courtney.)
- Verse Chorus Verse(Fan-made documentary series on Kurt’s life, widely regarded by Nirvana fans the most in depth play-by-play biography that exists- and it’s free on YouTube, which is lit.)
sources I don’t pull from, but many younger Nirvana fans do(the people who buy into the conspiracies generally):
Kurt and Courtney- A documentary made in the late 90’s under the guise of biography, but is actually about the conspiracy theory that Courtney killed Kurt. I saw it when I was a new fan and I literally laughed out loud from how apeshit it was.
Soaked In Bleach- ‘Biopic’ about Courtney killing Kurt. I haven’t seen it but straight men who think Courtney is ugly take it more seriously than the Bible. Very little truth ever goes into these theories, besides maybe names and dates.
Anything Hank Harrison(Courtney’s father) has to say- He wrote a book on the subject. He also gave her acid and lost custody of her when she was three years old. He’s a shit parent and I doubt he’s actually seen his daughter since the 80’s.
Anything Buzz Osborne(Kurt’s friend, singer for the Melvins, a band Kurt looked up to in Montesano) says- I think Buzz’s opinion is taken way too seriously by a lot of the fan base, I read an interview of his criticizing Montage Of Heck because Kurt ‘didn’t really have a stomach disease’ and was just lying about it to get high, and also about how he hated having to see Courtney naked, and made a good long point about how disgusting her body is. IOn top of all that(none of which really has to do with critiquing the film...?), he mocked Kurt and called him a loser for committing suicide. I don’t care what your opinion on his stomach, his wife, or his music is, that shit is callous and idiotic, but totally reflective of the 70’s and 80’s mentality regarding the mentally ill. He’s part of the legion of pretentious punk dudes who *kind of* knew Kurt, who think Courtney’s the one who ‘corrupted’ him, which brings me around to answering your question.
So, there’s this idea regarding Kurt and Courtney’s relationship, which is pretty similar to the one surrounding Sid and Nancy’s(or at least used to.) Courtney is the whiny, annoying, petulant bitch who attached herself to the first trophy she could find, and through her terrible manipulative personality kept him with her and kept him from getting better. In this mode of thinking, She’s also the person who ‘started’ him on drugs, and in a few people’s eyes, the person who ‘forced’ him to have Frances.
The reality of the situation, as I see it, as someone who’s gone to pretty decent lengths to inform themselves on the subject, is that Kurt and Courtney’s relationship was toxic: But the toxicity was mutual. This doesn’t mean they were a “problematic” couple, or that they were abusing each other, or even that either one of them was ‘evil’, it means that they fell deeply in love as young trauma survivors with substance abuse issues and huge ambitions. That’s a lot to put on any relationship and it’s a lot to talk about, so I’m gonna split this into categories of complaints that you’ll hear pretty routinely as a new Nirvana/Hole fan.
1. “She got him into drugs!”
Courtney started on heroin in the late 80’s in L.A., when she was still playing with Sugar Baby Doll(her band with Jennifer Finch and Kat Bjelland). Kurt, as said in Heavier Than Heaven, tried heroin for the first time around 1988-1989(I don’t remember exactly.) At the time, he was still living with(though I don’t believe they were still dating) Tracy Marander. Because he was destitute, he didn’t have enough money to start forming an actual habit until Nevermind started gaining speed, and by the time he and Courtney started dating(they met a couple of times and phoned a couple of times before cementing a relationship) he had been taking it for a while. That’s the thing I think people look over when it comes to Kurt- He was embarrassed about his addiction and he hated the physical side effects, but he loved heroin.
Courtney says in Montage Of Heck that she had both tried and kicked heroin by the time she met Kurt, but I think the Heavier Than Heaven description is probably more accurate: That she did heroin socially, and her addiction worsened after the two of them began living together because Kurt was(in her own words) ‘obsessed with oblivion.’ She also said in Montage Of Heck that his dream was to ‘Get to three million dollars and become a junkie.’ She’s stated several times that her drug problems came out of a need for ‘comfort’, and Kurt was into getting so fucked he couldn’t do anything else(also confirmed by his friend, Dylan Carlson, who was also into heroin and did it with him often.)
On top of that, Courtney was the one who orchestrated interventions for Kurt, went through the process of reviving him when he’d overdosed, and broke his syringes/scared off his dealers to try and keep drugs away from him as much as possible. At one point, she even made a rule that no drugs were to be done in the house- So he started renting motel rooms and doing them there. It was she who was the head of his final intervention before he went missing.
If anything, Courtney is the person who tried her hardest to keep drugs away from both of them. Considering how much people still talk about her doing heroin while pregnant(which occurred very early on before she was aware of her condition), Kurt is the person who struggled the most to stay off drugs during her pregnancy and after Frances’ birth, even going so far as to hide in the bathroom from her while she was struggling with morning sickness so she wouldn’t know he was getting high.
2. “She manipulated him into dating her/marrying her!”
Here’s the thing about Courtney; She is an enigmatic, entertaining, talented, maternal individual. Here’s the thing about Kurt; He’s a shy, quiet, non-confrontational guy with mommy issues. There’s been a lot of discussion on how Courtney was ‘obsessed’ with Kurt, and how she wouldn’t rest until she pinned him down: That’s untrue, or at least it reads less like crazy-bitch-steals-rock-god and more like cute-singer-has-crush-on-fellow-cute-singer. She was really into him, but when she met him she was still dating Billy Corgan, which deterred her from pursuing him until that relationship(basically) dissolved. When Kurt met her, he had just gotten out of a relationship with Tobi Vail, which most likely fell apart because she refused to be what Tracy Marander had been for him. She wasn’t interested in caring for him and she wasn’t interested in a full-time monogamous relationship. She was working too hard at her own career and was way too involved in the burgeoning riot grrrl movement to worry about looking after Kurt Cobain. That just wasn’t going to work for him.
Kurt was a big believer in the nuclear family model, he was very monogamous, and besides that he lacked the ability to physically take care of himself. If he wasn’t living with a partner who would clean up the house and remind him to wash his hair, it just didn’t happen. He was chronically ill, depressed, and he’d spent most of his adolescence AWOL from anyone who would actually raise him, so Tobi’s rejection deeply hurt him for a number of reasons- While Courtney, the opposite of Tobi in a few key ways, was exactly what he wanted. On top of looking like the archetypical punk girl, “I was attracted to her because she looked like Nancy Spungen,” she had a maternal streak (In Montage Of Heck, when he’s found sitting beside her while she cuts his hair, and, typical for people living with Kurt, mentions that she cleans the house because ‘nobody else fuckin does.’) Early on in their relationship, Kurt had a meltdown and begged Courtney to come to his apartment. She did, and looked after him the rest of the night, a pattern which would become common for them, and was stated by her half sister to be the ‘original strain on the relationship.’
Besides her mothering elements, Courtney was brassy and loud, and her presence allowed him to be less introverted and freer with himself. She was an ambitious young musician who shared a similar childhood to him, and had the same yearning for a safe home life that he did. She was well-read and artistic, and introduced him to the literary side of music creation, which he hadn’t explored yet. After spending a night on the phone with her, he went around telling everybody she was ‘the coolest girl in the world,’ and broke off another burgeoning relationship with Mary Lou Lord on live TV after spending the night with her. The famous quote, “Courtney Love is the best fuck in the world.” is in fact real. And yeah, he could’ve handled that one better.
The attraction was mutual, and I find it hard to believe that Kurt was ever forced into anything romantic with her based on how well she suited his tastes.
3. “She used him for his fame/money!”
As stated above, Courtney was attracted to Kurt before Nevermind was even recorded, and if she wanted to marry a famous dude right out the gate, at the time they met there were plenty of people who were way more famous than Kurt. In Heavier Than Heaven she mentions really liking their song “Dive,” and later in life she mentioned hearing “Sliver” and being impressed with Kurt’s writing abilities. Both of those songs were released a solid two years before Nevermind. She was interested in Kurt because he was cute and talented and she was savvy in the music scene, meaning that she kept up with underground bands.
Now, a point of contention between Kurt & Courtney was their different attitudes towards fame. That is entirely true. Courtney wanted to be famous, enjoyed celebrity, loved attention, and could handle touring, press, and the craziness of success. She was very charismatic, very physically strong, and let’s face it, definitely an attention whore. Kurt liked being praised, he liked being successful, and he definitely had a thing for attention- But he hated pressure, he had inferiority issues, he didn’t know how to handle his life being pried into all the time, and he wasn’t strong enough to do massive tours. Courtney just didn’t understand that, which is pretty common if someone doesn’t share your same mental illness/physical illness: Touring hurt Kurt’s stomach, it worsened his anxiety and emotional instability, it wore his body out, it didn’t agree with him. He loved playing live but couldn’t handle the mania or the travelling, meaning he didn’t mind blowing off huge tours that would bring in loads of money. Courtney, who did feel envious and intimidated regarding his success, would get angry at him for that- She didn’t want him to blow off massive paychecks and press coverage because it’s not what she would’ve done. I definitely side with Kurt on this, nothing is more frightening and frustrating than people trying to force you to do things you can’t handle health-wise. Courtney, being naturally business-oriented, was also aware of how things appeared to the public, and definitely cared about their image more than Kurt did- One of their fights revolved around her nagging him about how important the “Heart-Shaped Box” music video would be for him, and how he should look good. He reacted by stubbing out a cigarette on his forehead and saying, “Do I look fucking good enough for you now?”
So yeah, Courtney, like a lot of people in Kurt’s life, was all about furthering his career and success. A lot of people read that as her being money-hungry or manipulative, in my opinion it’s just a natural response from a person who’s spent their whole life trying to be a success and wouldn’t really get there until 1994. I think some of it was envy and I think some of it was her using him a little vicariously, neither of which are healthy but neither of which are malicious, either. She wanted to be a rockstar, she was ready to be a rockstar, she wasn’t; He thought he’d wanted to be a rockstar, he didn’t really want to, he was.
4. “She emotionally abused him!”
I hate to say this because I love Kurt so much but, as someone who’s been through a codependent relationship where they were bailing water out of a sinking boat, Kurt’s behavior throughout their marriage set off way more red flags for me than Courtney’s did. I don’t think he was actually abusive, but I do think he was a little too underdeveloped and unresolved to be married to someone. He had to grow up slower than everyone else because he missed out on having concrete mature influences, which Courtney did as well, and like I said earlier I think a lot of their problems came through a lack of adult communication skills. Both of them were really jealous people: Courtney couldn’t stand Kurt talking about Mary Lou Lord or Tobi Vail, Kurt was completely convinced that Courtney was cheating on him with Billy Corgan(even going so far as to talk to their lawyer about a divorce shortly before he died.) This was the catalyst for a lot of mind games and unnecessary drama, especially coming from Kurt.
Kurt couldn’t handle conflict. He was really passive aggressive, and would do things to purposely piss Courtney off or communicate to her that he was displeased. While she was trying to stay clean he would declare that he was going to do drugs in the apartment, when she started talking to a psychic to help her with her problems he mocked her and put her down, when she staged his final intervention his entire argument against rehab was that she was just as ‘fucked up’ as he was(she had already agreed to go into rehab, though whether he was aware of this or not I’m not sure.) He made his first suicide attempt by overdosing on Rohypnol on their wedding anniversary because she took some pills and fell asleep and he decided that meant she wasn’t interested in him anymore. I’m not arguing that that’s an irrational response to your partner getting stoned and falling asleep, especially when he’d apparently set the night up to be as romantic as possible, but the overdose put him in a coma and sent Courtney into hysterics.
Her mental health began to decline due to paranoia that he’d end up dead, and her weight dropped due to the added stress. As someone who’s been through a pretty similar situation to that and exhibited the same symptoms, I can tell you that it is never okay to use a suicide attempt to deal with a perceived injustice from your partner. By this time, Kurt was facing either getting clean or dying, and his behavior was very depressed and erratic, so there are explanations for the way he was acting and I don’t think he was trying to manipulate her with a threat. Despite my understanding of that, there is nothing more exhausting than being the caretaker of someone who is hellbent on never getting better. I can’t imagine being the caretaker of someone who won’t stop until they’re dead, and I do think at that point it would’ve been better for them to separate.
But that isn’t to say Courtney wasn’t toxic herself, I’m not trying to paint a wholly negative image of Kurt here. I’m merely trying to stand in the way of Nirvana fanboys who have no grasp on the more sickly sides of his personality, and give Court a bit of a break. Definitely, she struggled with her jealousy: As stated, she never wanted his ex girlfriends mentioned around her and would tear them apart if they were. She was ambitious and career driven, which eroded a lot of her platonic relationships/working relationships as well her marriage to Kurt. She was one of the people who was pushing him to recover in time to play Lollapalooza, and she was one of the people who pushed him into his last stunted tour before his death. She weaponized his relationship with Frances in ways that I and most people agree are gross: She told him he should be playing massive gigs to support his daughter(though their medical and legal bills were big they were hardly poverty stricken), and admitted in an interview later that she called him in rehab once to tell him he’d dropped Frances on her head(She mentioned during this that Frances was wearing a furry hood, and that he didn’t hurt her. In my opinion he was doing his best by even trying rehab again, and that he was already so worried that he was a terrible father that it was just cruel to make him feel worse.)
She has a tendency to be self-obsessed, and to put her own self interest before people she cares about, even if she regrets it later. She struggles herself with mental illness and addiction, both of which tend to give a person poor judgment regarding the people they care about.
Once again, Courtney and Kurt weren’t a healthy couple, but it wasn’t because they were evil or abusive towards one another. They cared for each other deeply, they had a very pure devotion. Underlying all this nastiness were two people who prayed together, wrote together, fantasized about a Valentine’s Day wedding, and faxed each other R-rated love letters like modern versions of James Joyce and Nora Barnacle. During one of his more successful stints in rehab, Kurt wrote Courtney love letters every night(though he did decorate them with blood, wax, and semen.)
They had some serious therapy they needed to attend, the both of them. But 90% of these demonizations of Courtney are either untrue or blown out of proportion.

Ok so for someone who knows absolutely nothing about fashion and gay culture, what is camp? I tried googling it but i still dont really get it and idk if its just me not understanding english or me not finding the right definitions
camp is SUPER hard to define, i can link u a very famous essay that basically did the impossible and attempted to define camp (susan sontag’s notes on camp from 1964) but camp essentially is part of gay and black culture (and you can still see it in drag culture). camp is a hyperbole on style of sorts, camp is loud, camp can seem tacky, camp plays with the definition of good taste (but not in the vulgar sense), camp is colorful, camp is exaggerated, camp is big, camp is weird because its not mainstream it often utilizes elements that are shunned bc theyre not elegant etc
a textbook example is leigh bowery whos outfits have inspired MANY MANY fashion designers over the years
Tumblr media Tumblr media
heres leigh bowery and heres alexander mcqueen directly inspired by the style
Tumblr media
80s camp was THE MOST it was really incredible
Tumblr media
modern camp can be fun too though !!
Tumblr media
camp is just like... its too much but in a fun way that challenges you to think like ‘yeah.... we do dress in a boring way why not be extra ???’

SOME random ninjago hc that is in the RTO au
i wrote a lot of hc that fit the RTO au, not necessarily associated with Future and so here we are
it’s long so here’s a summary of the HCs, you’ll find them under the cut
Timetwins childhoods
+ Kronos HCs (as requested by @moonprincess101)
cyrus HC
Pixal HC
couple other than future in RTO
EMs and elemental power in general
Zane & the ICE EM reincarnation
Morro & Ronin sibbling
Nadakhan & Dilara
AGE CHART
Bonus : Pokemon AU (+ doodles !!)
WARNING : LOOOOONG
Timetwins childhoods ( + Kronos HCs)
“Acronix" and "krux" isn’t their birth names, Acronix came up with them when they were younger, as super heroes names after discovering their powers. Krux loved the idea and they kept referring each other as these names. Krux forgot what is original name was, but Acronix still remembers them. i’m guessing that they might use them again after getting back into society
They grew us in a country side village with their mother for a big part of their life, didn't socialized much til their mother passed.  Krux was always overprotective and nix, not having anything else to compare, thought krux directing him was normal. when joining the EMs when the serpentins wars happened, Nix easily became friend with some of the EMs, unlike krux . tho they really did not got along with wu and garmadon
their elemental power was passed down to them by a Unknown Man whom they never met, as he left before their birth, Kronos :
- kronos was the previous user of the time element, he used it for good, preventing some disaster, saving people’s life, Wu knew him well.
- tho he was young when he married and didn't know how what would happen to his power after having kids. he took his power for granted and overused them even for simple task. to him , having powers was normal and sounded arrogant when speaking with other EMs or people in general
.- during his wife pregnancy, he noticed his powers started fading and freaked out, he went to wu, asking for help and learn the truth about what would happen to his powers after his sons where born. he was never seen again afterward.
when wu met krux and acronix, he knew they were related to kronos , but when asking them about their father , the twins would not reply and looks uncomfortable
- his personality shifted rapidly afterward, without powers he went mad, more aggressive, salty, self centered
Cyrus HC
- Cyrus grew up taking inspiration from DR. julien work to build his own tech, he never really expected to become so popular later in his life and sometime feels overwhelmed by it .
- Cyrus is a billionaire, and donate to charity all the time , ninjago doesn't seems to have any problems beside villains attacking time to time, you can expect rich people of the world to be actually helping RIGHT ?
- Cyrus isnt paralyzed, i imagine him more having weak legs motor control that dont support his body weight enough to let him stand, if he did, he would feel dizzy very fast, (this is heavly based on this HC )
it has some hint in the show, but you dont wanna mess with cyrus, he can be agressive toward people that bother him or his loved ones, he will not hesitate to fight the best way he can !
Pixal HC
- pixal was a project he worked on for YEARS, but she was only fully finished at the beginning of S3
- pixal was built to be gender neutral, until she told her father that she wanted to be seen as feminine , and he loves and support her
- pixal is very polite and usually call people by title, unless she knows them personally, she would never call cyrus by anything else than “father”
- when she first got in contact with people other than her father, she found them fascinating, and specially zane, knowing that he was a nindroïd like her.
- she used to have a crush on zane that for a while, felt mutual, until she got dismantled .. she was glad zane found a way to keep her around but as time passed, the lack of physical body, zane becoming colder with her afterward , and him getting closer to cole after the event of S4. made her loose interest, they were living as one but she missed being herself
- ronin was the one who dismantled her, after he captured zane, pixal tried to defend her friend but got destroyed, ronin used part of her body to repair his own . his left arm being partially made from pixal Original body
- she took inspiration from nya’s samurai X mech to build herself a new body
- in the process she developed feelings for nya. like zane earlier in her life, she felt like it was mutual but she isn’t sure the relation is working out, nya and her are spliting and getting back together every month or so
-she is an hopeless lover and tend to crush on anybody that express kindness to her
Couple other than future in RTO
RTO mainly focus on future, but also : samurai, Glacier, Scruff  and A BIT of jaya , in general, the ninjas (minus lloyd) are pretty much all in open relationships with one another and it’s mostly just polyninja but main focus on samurai and glacier
EMs and elemental power in general
- EM lives longer that other people , roughly 120~ years instead of 80 , and that even if they lost their powers
- being an EM can be either genetic or Given .. Powers can be passed down only two ways : a Em can have a kid and during pregnancy, the element will start fading until the baby is born, element will take time to developed in someone’s body , it roughly take 10-15 years for someone to discover their power. however this process inst guaranteed, and some EM’s kid can be born without powers, this is usually the case when only one of the parent is a EM, in case a EM have more kids than powers (eg. twins) the power will either splits up, or one of he kid will be born without powers
- the second option is strong bound, if a EM is dying (or dead) without kids or non of their kids inherited their powers , they can choose a Vessel .. it can be human, creature or any sentient being.
- taking someone’s power away by force CANNOT happen, it’s BULLSHIT.. wu and garmadon simply blocked krux and acronix powers, they are still considered EM and if they wish to, can pass down their powers to someone else , who WILL be able to control it (tho since the power Split up, nix can only pass down slow and forward power) after that, the time blade will lose their powers.
Zane & the ICE EM reincarnation
for his HC i’m going to call the previous ICE EM “simon”  i cant remembrer who named the Ice EM simon, if you know it please lemme know !  i love it tbh
-julien and simon knew each other very well, they were Close friends
- simon knew that julien loved making machine and heard about a new project "zane" a robot that could protect people that could protect themselves, julien loved zane like his son . later in his life after the serpentine wars , simon feeling old, wanted to pass down his elemental power to someone before passing away, and thought julien was perfect, after all they knew each other, but he changed his mind and decided to pass it to zane instead. He touched zane heart and after that, he slowly lost his powers till he passed . neither zane nor julien knew about it, but by freezing his heart, it gave him a part of his soul ( 9 STYLE) ,  a unusual but strong power source to zane, the elemental power of ice and changed his behavior a bit
Morro & Ronin sibbling HC
Morro and Ronin are brothers , morro is the oldest and inherited the wind power, unlike ronin.
ronin loved to provoque people and overall was a little brat. one day with morro, he annoyed a citizen of Stiix, that will later be known as “soularcher” that decided to curse him and his brother
Morro was terrified and fleed, he eventually decided to join wu’s monastery , who adopted him. morro was sure that becoming the green ninja of the prophecy would make him a hero and lift the curse on his soul. he was even more devastated to learn that wu was wrong
on his own ways ronin tried his best to fix his mistake growing up , without much success. falling into robbery, con artist, failed marriage and alcoholism
when morro came back as a ghost, he felt guilty and wanted to fix his mistake but he finally had people like nya and dareth (whom he met at a bar and chatted with him when he was sad) that cared about him and decide to fight for good for once
Ronin had a wife and a daughter a WHILE ago, but lost them . his daughter was roughly the same age as nya and she remind him of her
Nadakhan & Dilara
Dilara and nya are related
Dilara and captain sotto knew each other (family related ;;; OR she was cheating on nadakhan idk but either way she cared about him too )  and she help sotto capture nadakhan and his crew but made a mistake and got killed in the process
Dilara was just there to use nadakhan for his powers but nadakhan wanted her for his infinite wishes so I GUESS THEYre a good pair ???

A story about Racing, Police ignorance, and Love Ft. This Corny Ass Title.
((Wrote this over two days. little editing, lots of writing.))
The camera in my hand could hardly hold steady and I had a grin ear to ear on my face like a village idiot. From the passenger seat, I could see the excitement on Jessie’s face as she brought the car to a slow. It was 1:00 AM and she had somehow gone undefeated, back to back, in a series of drag races on the street. Five races, five wins, and a whole lot of promised money would probably make anybody grin ear to ear.
I turned the camera to her and without missing a beat, she turned and stuck her tongue out at me.
“Tell me, Jessie, How does it feel to win three grand without lifting a finger for work?” I asked in my best fake news anchor voice.
“Feels fucking good!” She shouted, slapping the steering wheel in joy.
I was caught on a laugh and it almost felt like that teeth chattering cold feeling running up my spine. Pure electricity. We were both having the time of our lives and I felt closer than ever to her.
“Woah, what the hell?” She murmured under her breath.
I must have held the camera on her longer than i thought because when i turned to look out the windshield, the crowd was dispersing fast. All the people that were once watching were now either running to cars, their friends with cars, or just plain running. They scattered like ants before us. I zoomed my camera in and followed two people as they ran and hopped a fence into someones backyard.
Thats when we both noticed the bright red and blue flashing lights up ahead. Fuck.
A portly man jogged through the crowd and towards our car, reaching to his hip. He stopped in our headlights and yelled something. To our suprise, he drew his gun and aimed at us through the windshield.
“STOP RIGHT THERE. STOP RIGHT THERE” He shouted at us.
I looked to Jessie who seemed to be weighing her options. She stared at the cop infront of us and chewed her lip, a nervous tic i've noticed over the years. Illuminated by the flashing lights, she grew a small smile.
“Put on your seatbelt” she said quietly.
“Its already on” I replied.
“Good”
She shifted the car into reverse and stuck her hand out of the window, raising her middle finger.
“FUCK YOU, PIG!”
I didnt even have time to laugh at her tenacity before I was thrown forward in my seat. She had hit the gas so hard that we spun the tires going backwards. She turned around in her seat to look out the back window and I raised the camera out the windsheild. The cop knew that pointing his gun was useless since he had no real reason to use it. He wasnt about to kill us over a drag race.
He started talking into his radio and I laughed. I laughed hard. One hand on the steering wheel and one on the top of my seat, Jessie watched the road behind her as she drove backwards at high speeds. I watched her through my camcorder. Her eyes said determination but her lips said fun. I looked at her skinny form admirably. Her dyed hair fluttered in the wind and her silver lip piercing caught the dashboard light just right. Watching her in her element like this was stunning. She did it all with such a natural grace. Her motions sharp and accurate like a blade under flesh.
She dropped back into the drivers seat and wrapped her hand around the e-brake. With one hand grabbing the ‘oh shit’ handle above me and another on my camera, I braced myself.
She yanked the handle back and spun the steering wheel, throwing our momentum to the left. As the car spun, She grabbed the shifter and threw it into first. She dropped her foot into the gas pedal and the car caught traction. I sank back into my seat as we took off again. The engine roared in a fury, drowning out all noise around us. A light flashed on the dash and she hit the clutch, shifting again. The car lurched and went faster.
She was grinning wide as the blue lights became distant behind us. She shifted again and gained more speed. The houses, trees, sidewalks, all became a blur as we blasted through the neighborhood.
All of a sudden a police car with the blues on pulled out infront of us and stopped, blocking the intersection ahead. Jessie laid the gas into the floor and shifted again. I looked over at her like she was crazy. She smiled and concentrated on the car ahead. We must have been going at least 80 at this point.
The car was getting closer when all of a sudden i felt our momentum swing again. Jessie had pulled the e-brake again and hit the gas, sending us swinging around to face where we came. I could smell the burning rubber around us. The smell got worse as Jessie put the car in first again and slammed the gas, taking off in the opposite direction of the cop car.
I looked behind us to watch as the cop car turned to follow. Of course, considering how Jessie was driving, I wasnt sure If it would be able to keep up. The car lurched as Jessie shifted. The mustang revved hard and kept pace, sending us down the street.
Two more cop cars showed up in the distance. I could see their blues before i could see their headlights. They were headed straight for us, side by side. No way around them.
I watched Jessie analyze it all. She was quick like this. She knew the curb was too high to climb without popping any tires. She also knew that these dumb ass cops werent backing down.
One cop car behind us, two infront of us.
She took her chances with the one behind us.
She slammed on the brakes, coming to a skidding stop in the middle of the street. The cop behind us, who had been picking up too much speed, had no choice but to either crash into us or swerve around us.
The cop car swung itself around our vehical and came a stop in the center of the intersection. This also blocked off the two cop cars ahead. Jessie threw the car in reverse once more and hit the gas, sending us backwards. She looked behind her for an opening and as soon as she found herself in a spot with no cars parked on the side of the road, she swung the mustang around again and put it in first, launching off for the final time tonight.
We peeled out and we were gone.
The street lights strobed through the windshield as the mustang flew down the street. Tunes poured from the radio and filled the car with good vibes. Every so often the car would lurch as Jessie shifted, but otherwise it was smooth sailing. Cops were long gone, probably trying to pull the fingers out of their ass so they could keep harassing people like us.
“Fuck the po” Jessie stated, turning down the radio a bit.
“They really are fucking worthless around here” I replied in earnest.
“You think theyre still stuck in that intersection trying to figure out how to get around one another?”
I laughed a bit at that.
“Probably” I said.
It was quiet for a bit with no other sounds save for the engine and the semi quiet radio. I stole glances at her from the passenger seat and I could tell she was thinking kinda hard about something. It made me wonder what the next step in the night would be.
“Tonight has been fun” she started, “but it kinda sucks that im gonna have to have my car painted again”
“Why is that again?” I asked
“Well, I cant exactly drive around freely in this thing when the police are on the look out for a red Ford Mustang. Kinda beats the point of running from the police”
“I get that...Still, you made a good chunk of change tonight. I imagine it wont run you too much to paint it, will it?”
“Nah” She replied, “but I dont know… I liked the red. I thought it looked nice…”
“Well I think you look better when youre not behind bars…” I said softly, almost wishing she didnt hear me at all.
“Yeah, its not exactly something I wanna see in the mirror every morning”
We sat in silence for another moment before i could scrape up the words to keep the conversation going.
“What color?” I asked.
“Hmm?”
“What color are you gonna paint it this time?”
The corner of her mouth twisted in contemplation.
“Well it was black, then that color got too hot...I liked red but this just isnt gonna do anymore…”
“How about pink?”
“Ew, no” she grimaced, “Talk about a big red flag saying ‘Im a female and i think its important above all that everyone should know that””
“I think thats a bit of a stereotype”
“Yeah? Well stereotypes exist for a reason.”
“Ok, ok, what about something fancy?”
“Like…?”
“Well, ive seen a few cars do a sort of sunburst color. Im not sure how expensive it would be to get that, but i think it could look nice. Besides, you could still use the red on your car for either the top or bottom depending how you do it.”
“Hmm...ya know, thats not a bad idea….”
“I also think it would be cool if you made the center black. Like a zero sun or something”
“Im gonna have to have someone sketch something but… I think i dig the idea of it…”
Jessie pulled the car to a slow and turned into her driveway. Hitting the button she had strapped to the visor, the garage door slowly rose open. She drove the car inside and hit the button again, closing it behind her.
With that, she turned the car off and opened the door, getting out. I followed suit.
As I stood from the car, the first thing Jessie did was pop the hood and walk over to the mini fridge in her garage. She leaned over and opened the door, grabbing two beers from the rack before shutting it. She brought one over and put it in my hands before cracking her own and taking a sip.
She sighed deep and walked over to her tool box, grabbing her socket wrench and bits, before standing over the engine bay.
“Timing is always a bit off with this thing…” she muttered as she went under the hood.
I cracked the top of my own beer before sitting down in the office chair she had lying around. I took a hearty drink from the bottle as I was quite parched. Moving fast and dodging cops really worked up a thirst, even though i was only filming it.
I watched Jessie tinker with the motor again. I don't think she will ever be satisfied with it even though it does the job just fine. Thats one part of her that really gets me. She loves her car a lot, Almost too much. She loves it to the point where I sometimes wonder if she really can really love another person beyond a one night stand. I can almost understand such a fondness for something inanimate, I mean, I love my camera to death and I use it almost as much as Jessie drives her car, but it almost makes me feel... Jealous. And even thinking that makes me cringe a bit. The idea that I would be jealous over the way someone treats an inaminate object over me is just silly. But god damn it if sometimes i dont get frustrated.
Ive had a crush on Jessie for nearly 2 years. She means the world to me and im not sure if she even knows that. I spend most of my free time with her. Ive loaned her cash many times either to put into her car or on tools. I mean she always pays me back and thats fine, but i just wish that I could say the thing that I wanna say without coming off as some weirdo. I dont even think she sees me in that way and it hurts.
It hurts really fucking bad.
I take another long drink from the bottle until its empty. I place the empty bottle on her work bench and grab another from the fridge, quickly popping the cap off.
Its not even her fault. Its not her fault at all. Its my fault for always being such a chickenshit anytime the moment arises. She even teases me about getting a girlfriend so she can steal her. (She is bi, but i dont think she would actually do that to me. Jessie is a good friend and if anything, she would probably act as my wingman. Shes cool like that.) It really blows that she pretty much sees me as a brother...or a lamp.
I dont wanna be a fucking lamp.
I watch as she cranks away at some form of machinery under the hood. Youd think after all this time spent around her, talking about cars and racing, that i would learn a few things. And i cant tell you that youd be wrong. I. Am. A. Dumbass. When it comes to cars.
Ask me about film or editing or what-have-you and i can pull answers out of my ass all day long. But anything beyond a standard oil change? No idea.
I watched as she went to take a sip from her own beer only to find it empty.
“Hey nerd boy, wanna grab me another beer?”
And like the whipped dog i am, I got right up and grabbed her another bottle.
I set it down on the car just a tad harder then i intended and winced when she took notice. It did not damage the car or anything, but there was a notable change in mood.
Fuck.
She set a hand on my shoulder before i could go sit back in my pity corner.
“Is something wrong, dude?” The way she looked at me pierced me. I was stuck. And if i didnt say something soon i was gonna look like a weirdo.
I sorta shook my shoulder, the one her hand was on, a bit to see if she would remove it. She didnt.
“Its nothing, really. Im just thinking about something shitty that youtube did, thats all.” I spoke quietly before looking away.
Her hand stayed on my shoulder, firmy clamped. Not enough to feel pain, but enough to know she was squeezing it in consolement.
My lonely ass practically shivered at the touch. Ive been starved of human contact for far too long.
“Yeah, im not buying that. Look at me” she said firmly.
When i didnt move my head from the side, she set the tool in her hand down on the car and grabbed my jawline, moving my head to face her.
She stared at me in something mixed with concern and...i guess something like motherly instinct?
“Why dont you tell me whats really going on? I know you too well to know that something small would bug you this much.”
I decided that I could probably get away with a half lie. Probably.
“I uh… Ive been having trouble with this girl…” I started sounding more unsure than id hoped. Motherfucker…
Her eyes lit up for a second. Shock? Suprise? Yeah I wouldnt believe me either.
“You actually found a girlfriend?” She asked quickly, somewhere between suprise and excitement.
“Well, I uh...No… Its more like I have a...crush…on this girl.” I spoke slowly trying to keep my tone even.
She then let go of me and speed walked over to grab both of the wheelie chairs and set them so they faced each other. All in one motion, she made sure we both had bottles in our hands and we were sitting down facing each other.
“So…” She started, “Tell me about this girl…”
I sat and thought about the most vauge things I could bring up so that I could wiggle out of this.
“Well, uh, shes got shorter hair. Not quite short, but about shoulder length. She has these beautiful eyes. Amazing, stunning, eyes…. Shes uh, a bit on the shorter side but i think thats adorable, really…”
“She sounds cute!” Jessie started, bouncing her legs in place excitedly. “Whats she like?”
“What do you mean?”
I knew what she mean.
“Ya know… like her personality or whatever…”
“Oh, yeah” i said rubbing the back of my neck nervously, “She uh...Shes real tom boyish, likes to play rough and have fun on the wild side of things...She also isnt afraid of anyone or anything and could probably take down people twice her size anyday of the week...She also has a really cool music taste...Shes one in a million, really”
I saw something flash real quick in her eyes before switching back. Oh fuck. She knows…
“Well she sounds like someone special” She said taking a sip of beer, “Have you thought of how youre gonna tell her?”
My heart started pounding. It was pounding harder than it was when the police were on our ass less than an hour ago.
“See now, thats the frustrating part. Im always trying to figure out how im gonna tell her...but im afraid she will be put off by me…”
“And whys that?” Jessie asked me.
“Because...uh...because…” I stammered trying to think of something to say.
Her eyes shined brightly and bored into my own. She concentrated on me like I was the only thing visible to man. I could feel my palms start to sweat.
“Because….me and her...got really close over the past two years...and i dont think she shares the same feelings...thats why its frustrating.”
Jessie leaned back in her office chair and drank down the rest of her beer before continuing.
“I see…” she started, “And would this girl happen to own a red ford mustang that she enjoys racing with and using to run from the police when the occasion arises?”
I looked down at my feet and nodded my head yes.
I heard the glass of her bottle clinking against the concrete floor before she rolled her chair closer to mine. I felt her hand around my jaw line again. This time it was more of a caress than a grab. She slowly lifted my chin up to meet her and my first expectation was to get laughed at for my burning red cheeks.
Once we were both staring at each other, I saw her move in closer to my face.
Her eyes drifted shut and before i knew it, her lips were against mine. It was a light kiss with hardly any movement. Timid and testing, like a deer investigating something new in the wild. I felt her head tilt more to the side and i did the same in the opposite direction.
I….I didnt really know how to feel. I was overwhelmed, trying too hard to read the situation at hand. My brain was going so fast i felt like my head was gonna explode.
And before i realized how amazing this moment truly was, she broke away from the kiss.
To my suprise, her breath was actually a bit laboured. And she stared at me with a big smile on her face.
“Ive been waiting....two long years for that, nerd boy.” she whispered so softly.
This time, I grabbed her chair and pulled her too me as I met her with my lips again. Our faces came together and this time it was all a lot messier. She moved her lips against mine, roughly, hungrilly even. I tried to mirror what she did but to be honest, my experience with kissing was minimal. Then I felt something poke between my lips and at my teeth.
I opened my mouth a bit more to accept her tongue. I could feel her reach behind my head and grab on, shoving us closer together. I ran my hands up her back, watching not to cross any boundies.
It was like a dance, really. She lead and i followed. And what a dance it was.
We broke apart for air and stared at each other. My hands had rested at her hips and she had a hand on each shoulder. We were both just about hanging off the edge of our chairs.
Out of breath she spoke quietly.
“Backseat?”
I nodded frantically, like my life depended on it.
“Backseat”

Bitcoin guru Mike Novogratz went where few have gone in expressing his optimism about the cryptocurrency. Beyond merely referring to it as “digital gold,” he said that its role in the crypto market is akin to gold’s on the periodic table.

Novogratz made that connection on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Milken Institute MENA Summit being held in Abu Dhabi. He discussed some of the reasons that he believes Crypto Winter is finally coming to an end, including the arrival of more institutions in the nascent marketplace.
Novogratz: Bitcoin is [Still] Digital Gold
The periodic table analogy may have caught many off guard. No matter, Novogratz doubled down on explaining why Bitcoin is still like digital gold, even after an 80 percent market crash.
“There are 118 elements on the periodic table; only one – gold – is valuable just because of its store of value. Bitcoin is going to be digital gold.”
He added that Bitcoin is going to be a place where you have sovereign money. It’s not U.S. money, nor is it Chinese money. Instead, it’s sovereign.
“And so sovereignty costs a lot, and it should cost a lot.”
Novogratz also addressed Bitcoin naysayers who say it’s too expensive and too slow to use in transactions.
“Have you ever been to Ft. Knox?” Novogratz asked a Bloomberg reporter. He went on to say:
“We keep gold surrounded by guns and deep vaults. It costs money to store gold because gold is a store of value. So the idea that it’s supposed to be free and cheap is misguided. That’s what makes Bitcoin unique. It requires security that other cryptos don’t need.”
Where’s the Institutional Herd?
Mike Novogratz still believes Wall Street’s institutional herd is just around the corner. | Source: Shutterstock
Novogratz is optimistic about Crypto Winter coming to an end due to the entry of more institutional investors into the space. Just this week, two pension funds made their first investments in cryptocurrency, albeit indirectly.
He joins billionaire investors Jim Breyer and Tim Draper who are steadfast in their optimism about the long-term trend of crypto.
Novogratz said the crypto world had a “fantastic bubble that popped at the end of 2017 and start of 2018.”
“All the retail frenzy that came up and down washed out, and now you’re in this process of handing off ownership from the people’s revolution, from retail to institutions. All the architecture that institutions need to feel comfortable with this is being put in place.”
He called complaints about institutions not entering the space as being a reason to doubt their interests rubbish.
He pointed to the crypto space starting to see more venture funds and hybrid funds enter. Novogratz is very excited about Yale University investing in a cryptocurrency fund. CCN reported that the Ivy League school, whose endowment is the second-largest in higher education, had invested in cryptocurrency fund Paradigm.
He said:
“Where yield goes, people will follow.”
Custody is Turnkey Moment for Crypto

— Milken Institute (@MilkenInstitute) February 13, 2019
What’s stopping institutions from investing in crypto primarily has to do with custody issues, Novogratz believes.
“The turnkey moment is when custody solutions begin to come online. We will see that happen over the next few months.”
Coming online is Fidelity’s custody solution, which will reportedly launch as early as next month. Then there is Bakkt, which was launched by Intercontinental Exchange. Plans call for it to facilitate physically-settled Bitcoin futures trading in the first quarter of 2019.
All these things are just getting started, and the crypto market will start seeing custody come online this year, Novogratz predicts.
“There are four or five really decent custody solutions. All of those custodians are working with institutions. Fidelity’s has 100, 200, 300 customers lining up to be customers. And so, they are not going to rush in on day one. They’re going to want to see the water run through the pipes. But over next six to twelve months you’re going to start seeing institutions contribute their assets, their money.”
No Lofty Bitcoin Price Predictions This Time
Novogratz once said Bitcoin would hit $40,000. Now he just says it could go up or down. | Source: Shutterstock
For now, Novogratz says that the Bitcoin price could go up or down. That’s quite a vague prediction from the former hedge fund manager who once said Bitcoin was going to $40,000. CCN listed this belief as one of the worst Bitcoin price predictions of 2018.
On Wednesday, he left the prediction banter at this:
“If you look back at any market that has these bubbles, it’s going to bubble back up. We’ve kind of hit an equilibrium in this $3,400 $3,600 zone. Could Bitcoin go down? Of course, it could. It could go either way. But it feels like we’re kind of just grinding along at the bottom, so the next move could be significantly higher.”
He’s also more confident that the next generation of altcoins are not going to be mere copycat versions of Bitcoin, as they’ve previously been.
He concluded:
“In the next run, we’re really going to see Bitcoin really separate itself from a lot of other cryptocurrencies.”

12 Graphic Design Trends that Will Be Most Influential in 2019
Courtesy Apple
With only moments to grab consumer attention, a compelling design offers the best chance to engage your customers and leave a memorable impression. As we wrote,
Marketing studies show that the average American is exposed to around 5,000 advertisements and brands per day. Out of that veritable flood, they found only 12 made enough of an impact to leave an impression. You can help your business be one of those twelve through effective, attractive design.
What will be trendy and hot in 2019?
Whether you’re looking for a modern logo design for a new business or considering a rebrand, creating or refreshing your product packaging or package graphics, or looking to redesign your company’s website, you should be familiar with these 12 graphic design trends that will be most influential in 2019.
12 graphic design trends and styles that will be most influential in 2019:
Bold typography
Light and dark color schemes
Gradients and duotones
Authentic stock photography
Vivid colors
Open composition
3D
Metallic effects
Fluid and flowing effects
Text on backgrounds
Strokes, stains, and doodles
Pantone color of the year
1. Bold typography
by vontrapp on crowdspring
Typography is a fundamental part of graphic design. As such, it’s no surprise every year that designers take typography in a different direction.
Recently we’ve noticed an increase in the use of type as a bold, often primary element in graphic and web design. Allowing your typography to stand front and center creates a powerful impression.
by thevierde on crowdspring
With advertisers and marketers fighting to stand out in increasingly competitive marketplaces, using distinctive typography can be an effective strategy to make a stronger impact on consumers.
Don’t be afraid to use bright colors, 3D effects, and unusual spacing to further emphasize the boldness of your type.
by elike_smith on crowdspring
The best part about the bold type trend?
It’s surprisingly versatile and works well in a wide variety of mediums.
2. Light and dark color schemes
by akosiaki on crowdspring
Many companies embraced the dark side in the past year.
The latest version of Apple’s Mac OS X (codenamed “Mojave”) has a dark mode, and updated apps from Microsoft, Facebook, Google, and more also incorporated dark color schemes.
by crealine on crowdspring
This trend continues as more companies adopt dark and light colors into their products.
Using light and dark color schemes can give designs a visual pop that helps draw attention.
Whether you want to shine the light or delve into darkness, core design concepts like simplicity and gestalt theory can really make a difference.
But be careful. Dark color schemes might pose readability challenges.
Be wary of the contrast ratio between the color of your text and the background behind it. Online contrast tests like the one offered by WebAIM can help.

3. Gradients and Duotones
by JStyle on crowdspring
Designers tend to have a love-hate relationship with gradients.
If the last year is any indication, all signs point to a giant heart emoji as gradients seem to be everywhere.
Gradients can add a sense of movement and dynamism to design, and companies are tossing out gradients like visual candy.
Check out the use of gradients and duotones in designs from streaming music services like Apple, Spotify, and Pandora.
Other companies are getting in on the multicolored action too (Stripe, tech site The Verge, and mattress retailer Purple, among many others).
If you want to give your brand energy and a youthful vibe, mixing several colors could be what you’re looking for.
Sites like uiGradients  and ShapeFactory’s Duotone have generators that help you test out color combinations. As with light and dark color schemes, be sure your choices have enough contrast so any text you use is still readable.

4. Authentic stock photography
At crowdspring, we’re very clear on the limitations of stock art:
It’s generic, lacking in personality, and the very same stock art could and does show up on your competitors’ websites, business cards and logos. It’s one reason that a business owner should never buy logos at so-called “logo stores” that sell pre-made generic tamplates. These are all factors that will weaken and muddy your brand.
Companies are beginning to recognize the limits of stock photography, and many have made efforts to address this.
The trend of “authentic” stock photography – stock photos that seem more genuine or real – is accelerating, as more companies create their own in-house banks of realistic-looking stock photos.
Some companies (like Apple) have created their own authentic stock photography for years, while others (like Uber) have made it a key component of their recent rebrands. What companies want are photos that appear to have been taken by a real person.
Instagram may be a big reason why authentic stock photography is on the rise. Consumers can now spot a bad stock photo from a mile away, and many do not trust or appreciate brands that use generic-looking stock in their designs.
The look of authentic stock photography isn’t hard to find: Imagine a very careful curated Instagram influencer’s feed and you’ll get a good idea of what it looks like.
5. Vivid colors
by besartm14 on crowdspring
The use of vivid colors continues the spread of 80s and 90s nostalgia into every nook and cranny of our existence. Companies and brands continue to go bold with their color choices.
Color is an important part of branding and product design. As we wrote:
Color has a deep and often subconscious effect on our behavior. Color is often used to persuade or influence us.
According to a study examining the effect of color on sales, 92.6% of people surveyed by the CCI: Institute for Color Research said that color was the most important factor when purchasing products.
In part, this trend is a continuation of the 80s color palette blown up and updated for a new generation of consumers.
All of the pastel shades have morphed into their brilliant counterparts.
Companies have planted their flags on energetic, eye-catching colors that jump out and grab the viewer’s attention.
Apple is one of the most influential companies on the vanguard of what’s on trend for design.
The release of 2018’s brightly colored iPhone XR reflected the growing trend for bold colors.
It’s not just Apple parading a lively palette of hues and shades. Nike, Adidas, and other clothing companies also tapped into vivid colors for their marketing efforts as well as their products.

6. Open composition
It used to be that designs were bound by frames, but designers have increasingly broken free and this will continue into 2019.
Open composition designs utilize every part of the canvas. Online, these can be websites that scroll in all directions or advertisements where elements seem to extend past the edge of the image.
by mandex on crowdspring
Websites are one place where this effect can be quite spectacular, especially when its combined with a user’s action like scrolling or clicking.
The Magic Leap website is a great example of this, where whales move in and out of view.
Scrolling zooms out, showing that there’s much more to see that was out of view.
It’s a powerful effect and very on brand for a company focused on alternative reality products.
youtube
Your brand might benefit from adding a zoom effect inside of an airy, open composition. It adds a spacious feel and can be very effective when done correctly.
7. 3D
by MadisonFriday on crowdspring
With the steady march of alternative and virtual reality into the mainstream comes the growing use of 3D as a design element. 2019 will be big for designs with isometric, extruded, and 3D components.
Advances in browser technology enable designers to bring 3D elements to their websites. Extending design into the third dimension brings its own set of challenges, but it can (literally) bring some much-needed depth to your brand.
Courtesy Lyft
Brands like Lyft use 3D in the form of isometric illustrations to bring a different feel to their brand. It’s an effective technique to give simple illustrations a more sophisticated look.
But remember – it’s important to use these types of effects sparingly.
Courtesy Apple
8. Metallic effects
Metallic effects are back in a big way.
Until recently, most metallic effects in design fell out of favor.
This has changed as companies like Apple and Samsung add metallic flourishes (or even whole elements) into their designs.
Done well, metallic design can be sophisticated and classy. Take care to not overdo it, however, as the line between classy and classless is a fine one.
by muxalex on crowdspring
9. Fluid and flowing
Designers are merging their designs with liquid or fluid effects to create something new and otherworldly.
These effects add an organic feel to designs that can make them seem softer and more natural. It’s also a great way to add a visually interesting texture that can turn an otherwise generic-looking design into something more dramatic.
The key with fluid effects like any other trend is to consider whether or not it fits your brand.
Transitions can be especially tricky if they’re not done well (or done gratuitously). If you’re looking to add flair to your brand, patterns inspired by liquids can be unique and visually arresting.

10. Text on backgrounds
by Paula23 on crowdspring
Text set on background images is an old graphic design trend that is again coming back in style.
The look features bold typography on evocative, visually engaging backgrounds.
In addition to its visual impact, designers use text on background colors to align a business with its vision, mission, and brand values. This helps to strengthen a company’s brand identity.
Visually linking a business with its core brand aspirations and character is a great way to further your message to consumers.
Whatever the reason, adding an image behind your text is an effective way to draw attention to your copy.
11. Strokes, stains, and doodles
by loginstudio on crowdspring
Illustrations were huge in 2018, and 2019 continues this trend as more companies incorporate drawn elements into their designs.
The trend is shifting from more abstract or painterly illustrations to ones that appear more like doodles or quirky drawings. Designers are adding strokes and splashes of color to spice up their designs and give them a visual edge.
Adding doodles to your design can also make your brand appear more friendly and welcoming.
Brands use doodles and splashes of color in place of stock photography and other more traditional visuals.
A well-placed doodle can turn an otherwise stark design into something warm and approachable.
Doodles can be tricky to create.
They need to look professional and brand consistent, but still retain a hand-drawn feel.
If you plan to use doodles, it’s best to consider their use throughout your brand. Consider them as a primary branding element and use them consistently throughout.

12. Pantone color of the Year
Pantone is going on twenty years of major influence across many industries with its choice for Color of the Year.
The color selected influences product development and consumer purchasing from everywhere from apparel, merchandise, industrial design, packaging design, and anything you can think of where color is involved.
This year, Pantone has declared “Living Coral” the color of the year for 2019.
Image courtesy of Pantone Color Institute
Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute Leatrice Eiseman said in a statement:
With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord.
Pantone selects a new color every year based on several considerations. New trends in design, art, travel, social media, and even the socioeconomic climate are all considered in choosing the color for the year ahead.
We’re looking forward to seeing this warm, comforting color appearing everywhere from logo design all the way down to the throw pillows in your mom’s house.
Wrapping up
Strong graphic design is a cornerstone of any business’s brand. It impacts your company’s logo, website, app, packaging, and more.
It’s no longer enough to design something once and then call it a day.
Design, like consumer’s tastes, evolves over time. It’s crucial the look and feel of your business changes along with it.
Incorporating trends into your design is a good way to keep the spark alive. The key is to find trends that work with your existing brand, not against it.

Installing An Undercounter Fridge
Every kitchen needs a fridge. Otherwise, you’re not going to have a place to store all of your foods. With that being said, you need to understand that all fridges are different. Some are big and gawky. They are going to decrease the aesthetics of the kitchen. If you want to make sure that your kitchen remains sleek and stylish, you will definitely want to install an undercounter fridge. This will tuck the fridge away and make it look so much more stunning. The undercounter fridge is definitely one of the hottest kitchen renovations ideas of 2019.
Install New Lighting
There is absolutely no doubt that your kitchen needs a little more lighting. Without a sufficient amount of lighting, your kitchen is going to look dark, dull and it’ll be uninviting. With this in mind, you should add more lighting to your kitchen. Just remember that some lighting is better than others. A chandelier is the most luxurious type of lighting you can buy. This type of lighting is downright luxurious and it will definitely add elegance to your kitchen. While it might seem complex, installing a chandelier won’t be too difficult. What do you have to lose? Go for it!
Upgrade The Filters
In some cases, renovations are about improving your health and less about aesthetics. With that being said, you should most definitely think about upgrading your kitchen’s filters. You need filters in your tap and in your fridge. You’ll want to upgrade to the best filters humanly possible too. To get the most for your family, you will definitely want to invest in solid block carbon filters. They’ll protect your family to the fullest and help ensure that your water is clean and free of impurities. Be sure to upgrade to these types of filters sooner rather than later. In the long run, you’ll be glad that you did.
Upgrade Appliances
Every so often, you’re going to need to upgrade your kitchen’s appliances. After all, they’re not going to last forever. Eventually, your appliances are going to wear out and they’ll need to be replaced. When this happens, you should use the opportunity to enhance your kitchen’s appearance. You can do that pretty easily by investing in the right appliances. Make sure that you buy stainless steel appliances. And, you should upgrade all of your appliances simultaneously. This will make a big difference and it’ll definitely make your kitchen look so much better. Be sure to use this combination of kitchen renovation ideas to completely revamp your kitchen in the upcoming year.
Different Kitchen Sinks
You probably don’t think about it much, but you really use your kitchen sinks every day. In fact, the kitchen sink can be quite an interesting design element in the kitchen. There have been a number of trends come and go over the years. You have probably seen everything from the white tub to the stainless steel sink. It is true that these styles of sinks are still popular amongst the masses, but 2019 is going to bring about some major changes. In 2019 you are going to see sinks that are fully decked out. These sinks will include everything from removable cutting boards to integrated coasters and even put holders, ice buckets, and the list goes on.
Open Storage
Storage is without a doubt one of the most important aspects of your kitchen. Not only do you need appropriate storage for your cookware, but also you need appropriate storage for your food. That being said if you have beautiful dishware there really is no sense in hiding it behind monotonous cabinetry. And, that is why in 2019 you are going to start to see more open shelving. Many homeowners will be proudly showing off their beautiful dishware.

Moon Duo’s guide to psychedelia
Ahead of the release of their new two-part psychedelic opus, Moon Duos Ripley Johnson reveals his key psych releases
As the founder of San Francisco drone-rockers Wooden Shjips and one half of synth-driven psych pairing Moon Duo, Ripley Johnson has frequently set the controls for the heart of the sun. The new Moon Duo album, Occult Architecture Vol 1, is billed by its label Sacred Bones as the first instalment of a two-part psychedelic opus yet Johnson is keen not to define psychedelia too rigidly. All music has some psychedelic elements to me, he explains. Its something that disrupts reality and transports the listener into a different mindspace, forcing them to perceive things differently. And all kinds of music can do that. With that in mind, here are Johnsons seven favourite head-spinning, reality-disrupting, genre-defying psychedelic albums.
Funkadelic, Funkadelic (1970)
youtube
I discovered this through a friends older brother, which is how I came across a lot of stuff as a teenager. It was the same person who turned me on to the Stooges. At the time, you couldnt really find this stuff in a local record shop. You needed someone to guide you. We would record albums to cassette and carry a boombox out into the woods, take psychedelics and trip out to this crazy music.
Growing up in the 80s in New England, we were always looking for something weird as a reaction to the culture of the time artists who were breaking social norms, who were rebels in some way. Funkadelic seemed a little wilder than the usual classic rock stuff Id already heard. They were doing something irreverent and fun but also super weird. The album creates its own world, it takes you along on a ride. You want to go where these guys are going.
Monoshock, Walk To The Fire (1996)
youtube
The first real band I was in was called Botulism. We were inspired by things like Blue Cheer, [the Velvet Undergrounds] Sister Ray, the Stooges, some of Neil Youngs more extreme guitar stuff. We were young and a little bit angry. There wasnt a whole lot going on for bands like that in the 90s. But Monoshock were one band who gave myself and my friends hope that we werent the only ones.
If you listen to Walk To The Fire and then play the first Comets On Fire record you can hear an evolution. When Wooden Shjips first came out [in 2006] and people were talking about this new psychedelic movement, there was an attitude that nothing had been happening since the 60s. But there was lots of stuff happening, it was just underground. Monoshock had already split up by the time we came along, but their album got re-released and now I think its right there in the pantheon.
Twink, Think Pink (1970)
youtube
Twink was the drummer in the Pretty Things when they made SF Sorrow. This is the solo album he did directly after that with members of the Deviants, before they all went on to form the Pink Fairies. I came across this album around 10 years ago after a Wooden Shjips show. Someone from the audience came up to me, really enthusiastic, but also very strange maybe he was actually tripping at the time and wanted to tell me about one of the most psychedelic albums of all time, which was Think Pink.
And hes right, Think Pink is one of the great records of the original psychedelic era. It uses all those classic psychedelic effects, a lot of phase-shifting and panning, but to great effect. It sucks you in and messes with your head. Its well-produced, but its weird. I dont think it was recorded with any intent of being on the charts. Back then, it was harder to make a record. Whats great about a lot of the classic-era psychedelic records is that people got a chance to go into a studio, which was a big deal, and then they made something completely weird that had no chance of selling but they did it anyway, which I think is really admirable. Twink was a genuine freak, he was living the radical lifestyle to the full.
Sergius Golowin, Lord Krishna Von Goloka (1973)
youtube
This is one of three records released on Rolf-Ulrich Kaisers Die Kosmischen Kuriere label the others being by Walter Wegmllers Tarot and Seven Up by Timothy Leary with Ash Ra Tempel, recorded while Leary was on the lam in Switzerland. Theyre all great. This ones got Klaus Schulze on drums and synthesizers. Its really serene and pastoral and then Sergius Golowin, who was sort of a mystic character, does these really bizarre, otherworldly monologues over the top where he talks about Krishna although its all in German so I have no idea what hes really saying. Its incredibly bizarre. Just when youre settling into this relaxing, droning music, these intense German vocals come in, mixed really loudly. Its like nothing else, it takes you to this strange place.
The Congos, Heart Of The Congos (1977)
youtube
I dont think of psychedelic as a genre, I think of it as a descriptor. To me, some of the best psychedelic records are those which come from outside the world of psychedelic rock. This ones a Lee Perry production. It has a very claustrophobic and heady vibe to it, even though it was made in Jamaica, which we think of being bright and tropical. I think its a masterpiece. The vocals are really haunting, with these fire-and-brimstone-evoking lyrics, so theres a sense of dread. I dont know what their mindset was when making it, but it sounds like no other reggae album Ive ever heard.
There are a lot of experimental reggae producers but none that can really hold a candle to Lee Perry. I love how much chance is involved in early dub. These days, especially with computers, things are a little more surgical. I like music thats a little more rough around the edges, that allows for circumstance to be part of the record.
Royal Trux, Twin Infinitives (1990)
youtube
In Wooden Shjips it was very hard for us to tour, for everyone to get time off work and to make it work financially. The impetus for Moon Duo was to do something with just two people that was practical and pragmatic. When youre in a band with four or five people, the vision can sometimes be less focused. When you have just two people its more like a conversation, its much more intimate.
Our obvious inspiration when we started Moon Duo was Suicide but we were also looking at other duos, including Royal Trux. Like us, theyre a duo who were also a couple. Twin Infinitives sounds very personal, very claustrophobic. Theres a certain way they used reverb that instead of making things sound big and open, it made it sound like there was a fog around them. Its also very noisy and fractured and disorienting and sounds kinda dangerous, like they were living on the edge. I listen to it and I worry about them.
J Dilla, Donuts (2006)
youtube
To me, this is the most psychedelic record thats come out in the last 15 years. Im not a huge hip-hop person but this album blew me away. Were back to the idea of psychedelic albums taking you on a journey and creating a world you can enter. This album is like an acid trip or a carnival ride. You put it on and you just get swept away. The songs are so catchy, but they change before you want to them to, which creates this sense of freefall.
For people who dont really appreciate sampling, this is a great record for them to listen to. On the one hand you can say its easy, that with machines and electronics you can create anything. But thats a creative challenge right there. Whats your vision? Whats the story youre telling? Having the tools is great, but you need the vision and you need the soul, the humanity. That all comes across in this record. When you read the story of how he made it, in a hospital bed, its even more incredible [J Dilla was suffering from an incurable blood disease and died three days after Donuts was released]. Its so joyous and so fun. A psychedelic record takes you to a different place it can be a dark place, it can be a light place, it can be something you just never imagined before. And, to me, thats what Donuts does. It never ceases to surprise me.
