Thinking about the parallels to be made between chise's curses appearing as voices/urges to be more violent whenever her life is in danger vs the curse that philomena's father placed to protect philomena if her guardian were to ever be struck down (presumably then her life would be in imminent danger) that destroys whoever activated it. Both are the product of goodwill, chise to save the dragon and to then save stella, adam to try and protect his daughter from the cycle of toxicity and trauma he was born into. The intent of never being the one to strike the first blow but if threatened they react tenfold. The human nature to not only want to survive but to protect.

Love, Power, and Safety in The Ancient Magus’ Bride

Although The Ancient Magus’ Bride is serialized in a shounen magazine in Japan, it bears a lot of parallels to the supernatural romance fantasies you commonly see in shoujo, particularly in its focus on the emotional life and development of the young female protagonist.

In the story, 15-year-old Chise Hatori willingly allows herself to be sold at an underground auction for members of a secret magical community, where she is purchased as an apprentice to one of the last true mages, Elias Ainsworth. Although Elias appears inhuman, he treats Chise with a kindness she has only rarely encountered—and also declares his intention to one day marry her.

I was fortunate enough to see the first three episodes of the anime in theaters, where a pretty diverse crowd was gathered. I attended mostly with other female friends who had already read the manga, but in line we got into a conversation with a group of young men who had bought tickets on a whim, since they were fans of Attack on Titan (also produced by Studio WIT). They asked us if we knew what the show was about. When we told them, they were shocked and initially uncomfortable.

Certainly, the premise of Magus’ Bride is a strange one, but their surprise stemmed more from concern that the story would be a horror tale about the protagonist being mistreated. The reactions of these strangers probably aren’t representative of some larger gender divide in how people react to this show, but it did make me think that, as a fan of the manga, I may have started to take the power imbalance in the premise for granted.

So I started reading a manga called Frau Faust today (which I recommend! It's from The Ancient Magus' Bride creator and it's only 19 chapters long)

And not to get too spoiler-ish with it, but it made me think about an AU in which it is Sebastian who allows himself "to lose Ciel's soul forever" and turns him immortal before his master could die

Ciel is...actually not too happy with getting cheated out of his promised death. Cut to a centuries old chase in which one immortal is running left and right to find some way to die

While the other puts pebbles in his road at every turn

Hey yo it's me again. First of all I LOVE THE NEW CHAPTER!! And seriously can't wait for the next one!

Second, I've read like 14-15 volumes of the ancient magus bride manga and I really like it. Everyone who says it's grooming or pedo obviously haven't even read the manga. I would love to into details, but I don't wanna risk giving out spoilers if you ever want to read or watch it ☺️

i love it i love alllll the symbolisms surrounding what chise is she’s a bird she’s a queen bee she’s a phoenix she’s a wolverine she’s a fox she’s a wolf she’s a dragon she’s a walking corpse she’s an incomplete monster she’s an immortal being she’s a bloody goddess she’s functionally the same as whatever elias is supposed to be she’s learned and grown to be so many things but none of that is as grave or terrifying as chise growing to be human

The Ainsworth home is lively once again. Silky is pleased.
