My list is nearly DEVOID of GMMTV tunes, not because I don't love them, but because when I started watching BL, I realized that my streaming service (Tidal) just didn't have most of the GMMTV songs. So when I built my BL playlist, it by necessity didn't have any GMM songs. So the songs I grew to love and know by heart are not the big hitters. (I now have a YouTube playlist that I'll listen to occasionally, but I still mostly listen to non-GMMTV songs!)

I LOVE THIS SONG. Amp writes so many of the big BL songs these days, to be sung by others--I think she wrote Our Song!--but this version is so delicate and lovely.

Have you watched Gaya Sa Pelikula? You really should. Is it a BL? We can quibble about it, but regardless, it remains one of my favorite shows I've watched since I started watching BL. It's so good. And this song! I love this song so much that I did a deep dive into Ben & Ben and ended up going to see them live when they toured the US...whenever that was. THEY WERE INCREDIBLE. They are incredible.

'Be Your Sunshine' is from About Youth, a WONDERFUL little Taiwanese coming-of-age BL. (I truly loved it.) I love this song. It's just so lovely.

Hell yeah, I LOVE THIS SONG. I have complicated feelings about the BL it's from (The Eighth Sense) for like, five million reasons, and yet I also have to say that I fucking love the show too. Anyway, this song grabbed me IMMEDIATELY. I adore it. Such fun to sing along to.

Eleventy million songs from MSP could have gone in this spot; I love so so so so so many. But this one remains my favorite to turn waaaaay up, put the car windows down all the way, and scream sing as I'm driving really fast on the expressway. If you hear Fourth singing real loud from a car near you, it's probably me. The only way to listen to music in the car is so loud every other car around you can hear it.

Today on- Random new Thai expressions I stumble upon:

A pun on มุก /mook/

This clip is from ep. 2 of DMD Friendship the Reality which airs Sundays on Mandee Channel and is about Domundi's new artists, also known as Gen 3. The end goal of this show is to form two pairs to be the mains in a new Domundi BL (possibly what they announced as Fan Boy during their lineup for 2023?). But it's mostly about all the kids bonding, trying out different skills, and showing off their strengths and personalities. These two are FirstOne (left) and Latte (right) and they're likely gonna be a คู่จิ้น /koo jin/ (= shipped couple)/have a fixed working partnership, considering the show's editing and them already having fans together.

ANYWAY- literally none of this is relevant for the actual joke. First asks why Latte would choose him and Latte says:

เพราะว่าเราโบบากันได้อยู่ /phraaw waa rao boba gan dai yuu/ = "Because we can boba together."

หมายถึงเล่นมุกนะ /maai theung len mook na/ = "Meaning playing jokes!"

มุก /mook/ as in มุกตลก /mook dta lohk/ = pun, joke but also as in ชานมไข่มุก /cha nohm khai mook/ = pearl/bubble milk tea aka boba 🧋

The weirdest thing happened: I was listening to NuNew's cover of this song (listen- I'm aware I discover a lot of songs through him but he IS my favorite performer dsjshdhhs) and got real confused because I was able to sing along right away but cannot for the life of me recall how I knew this song already! I hadn't seen the MV, no one I follow seems to have covered it, and I didn't know the artist at all?? It remains a mystery to me but I've played it endlessly since then. I don't remember how I originally found it but it's one of those songs that routinely has me singing along. The title translates to 'From now on every love song will be yours'. I love the lyrics a lot!

This is one of many songs and artists I discovered on that one afternoon-turned-evening-turned-night when I decided to start tracking down every song Amp Achariya has had a hand in (I then realized I was in over my head and that she'd worked on so. many. more. than I ever expected and that my spreadsheet skills weren't sufficient to catalog them lol). Needless to say, Matcha is incredibly talented and I've so far only scratched the surface of her discography.

This song was written by ณกมล ��ุคคละนันท์ aka PEPPERY P who penned a lot of the My School President songs - อีกนิด (Come Closer), รักษา (Healing), พูดได้ไหม (Let Me Tell You), ก้อนหินกับดวงดาว (Rock&Star), and รักคู่ขนาน (Multi-Love). I could've chosen so many songs among the Cutie Pie OSTs but ended up deciding on this one because P'Pin truly wrote this song to highlight both their vocal talents and it shows. ✨️ He works a lot with Domundi artists (especially ZeeNuNew) and FreenBecky, writing songs and OSTs for them and arranging songs for them for concerts - his IG is full of song insights and singing snippets if you like any of these artists!

I'm not a KP girlie and this song wasn't even on my radar when I watched the show. I kinda rediscovered it a few months later, most likely either by going through Jeff's discography or maybe through Joong Archen singing it on an IG live (I realize it must look like I sit and watch a shit ton of IG lives but the honest truth is that I don't even use IG, I just stumble upon clips on twt and YT a lot lol). And boy howdy did Jeff's writing strike a chord! Don't get me wrong, the English version is nice too and all but it doesn't come close to the Thai lyrics and how well they flow with the melody, Jeff really outdid himself there!

นาคี is not a drama I've seen and, yes, I again know this song through a NuNew cover lol but I really wanted to make sure to include a ลูกทุ่ง (Luk Thung) song because I love this genre. This song is extra special because the lyrics are in Isan, which is a Northeastern Thai dialect (though it's actually far closer to Lao than Central Thai). I routinely get this song stuck in my head.

Hi, so does Mhok mean clouds? I’m probably getting the tone wrong, but that would be cute as heck.

Hmmm almost~ It is a weather-related word! Without outright giving you the translation (because of your learning style):

A cloud and หมอก are both water vapor. A cloud will be found in the sky, หมอก you'll find close to the earth's surface.

Same as you can use cloud as an adjective (clouded, cloudy), you can do with หมอก to describe something being like that weather phenomenon หมอก (in color or quality).

In English, there's different words for it depending on how dense it is and how much it impacts people's sight. This quality of หมอก is arguably the reason why the character Mork is named as such. Because it describes how/what Day sees: Day's sight is หมอก and Day sees Mork.

Can you tell what หมอก means? 😌

Sidenote 1: Highly recommend revisiting the OST ประตูวิเศษ (Better Days) at some point because its lyrics also explore what it means to see with one's eyes vs. to perceive. ...and maybe also because I'm a big fan of its writer Amp Achariya - who you'd know, zimmbs, from several Cutie Pie OSTs! ☺️

Sidenote 2: Come to think of it, the actual word for 'cloud' sounds close to หมอก in that only the vowel and tone differ.

The Little Prince

Disclaimer: not a native speaker, still learning 🙏

Some followers or mutuals may know that I started reading the Thai version of The Little Prince and even though I haven't gotten that far into the book yet, I did skip ahead to find the two passages that came up in ep. 1 of Last Twilight. So naturally, I wanted to draw some comparisons with the dialogue in this lovely scene from ep. 8:

บางอย่างเนี่ย /baang yaang niia/ เราไม่ตองใช้ตามอง /rao mai dtaawng chai dtaa maawng/ ก็มองเห็นมันได้ /gaaw maawng hen man dai/ = For some things we don't need to use our eyes to look yet [we] can see them anyway.

ใช่ บางอย่างมันก็ต้องใช้หัวใจรับรู้ /chai. baang yaang man gaaw dtaawng chai hua jai rap ruu/ = Right. Some things need to be perceived by using the heart. เหมือนความรู้สึกพี่ตอนเนี้ย /meuuan kwaam ruu seuk phi dtaawn niia/ LOVE he means love!! all-encompassing, indescribable l o v e! I was almost expecting one of them to express it in words but what we got instead expressed it perfectly in actions

I'm not sure where Day is reciting from in ep. 1 (or if they had to change it for copyright reasons that I'm unaware of??) but it's very slightly different from the book so let's look at both!

เจ้าชายน้อย /jao chaai naawy/, ch. 21, p. 125, the Fox:

[...] เราจะมองเห็นแจ่มชัดด้วยหัวใจเท่านั้น /rao ja maawng hen jaaem chat duuay hua jai thao nan/ สิ่งสำคัญนั้นไม่อาจเห็นได้ด้วยดวงตา /sing sam khan nan mai aat hen dai duuay duuang dtaa/ = We can see clearly only with the heart. What is essential cannot be seen with the eyes.

Day in ep. 1:

เราจะมองเห็นทุกอย่างกระจ่างชัดเมื่อเราใช้หัวใจนำ /rao ja maawng hen took yaang gra jaang chat muea rao chai hua jai nam/ สิ่งสำคัญไม่อาจมองเห็นได้ด้วยตา /sing sam khan mai aat maawng hen dai duuay dtaa/ = We can see everything clearly when we use [our] hearts. What is essential cannot be seen with the eyes.

Sidenote: While trying to find out if Day was reciting from a different translation, I happened upon this article from 2020 which included this lovely photo of one of many Braille translations! :)

Back to the editions at hand though!

My edition is from 2013 and translated by อำพรรณ โอตระกูล (Amphan Otrakul). Hers was the first Thai translation, originally published in 1969. There are uhh a lot of versions by now though.

Judging from what I can see of the cover in ep. 1, my assumption is that Day's version is a print of this 2003 one which says on the cover is still the Otrakul translation but this site credits as being translated by พงาพันธ์ุ โบบิเยร์ (Panga-Phan Bobier), originally in 1997. I know there are three well-known translations and I've checked the one by อริยา ไพฑูรย์ (Ariya Paitoon) (pdf version here) so I'm just gonna stick with the assumption that Day is quoting from the Bobier translation. 🤷‍♀️

And because I'm very highkey in love with this song-

ประตูวิเศษ (Better Days), written by Amp Achariya, specifically Jimmy's lines:

/aat mai hen, dtaae rap ruu duuay jai/ = might not see but perceive with the heart /thee mai hen gaaw dai hen duuay jai/ = what isn't seen can be seen with the heart /kham waa rak man gaaw chat nai jai - praw ter/ = 'Love' is clear in [my] heart - because of you.
