Maurice Prendergast (American, 1858 – 1924) Beach at St. Malo ca. 1907 Oil on canvas, 36.8 x 44.5 cm Carmen Thyssen Collection • #Repost @paintings_i_love № 3205 Prendergast, who enjoyed swimming, depicted the seashore in countless paintings from Revere Beach or Gloucester in Massachusetts to St. Malo in France. Prendergast loved the sea, and at times, as he was attempting a water cure to alleviate his deafness, his pleasure in bathing took on an almost hedonistic quality. "To take off one's clothes and lay full stretched on the sand exposed to the wind and the sun is the finest sensation I know on a spring day. Even in cold days in March one little realizes the penetrating force of the sun on the body." Although Prendergast had visited St. Malo during his 1891-1894 stay in Paris and also in 1914, it was his two-month summer visit in 1907 that inspired most of his canvases. St. Malo, situated on the Brittany Coast, had at the time a little more than ten thousand inhabitants. Prendergast was obviously attracted by the coastal town with "its high tides and ramparts, " where he painted such landmarks as the lighthouse and Chateaubriand's Tomb, but it was the fine sandy beach with its colourful bathing tents that attracted him the most. Portrait of painter Bernard Perlin (1918-2014). Perlin was closely associated with the group of painters around Jared French and Paul Cadmus. His paintings are also linked to their magic realism, but Perlin created a totally distinct style, which is very recognizable in his most well-known piece, the striking Orthodox Boys. Author Glenway Wescott, one of Perlin's friends, commissioned him to draw a portrait of author E.M. Forster, when the latter was in the US for the first time in the late forties. There exists a very homely picture of Wescott and his partner Monroe Wheeler, taken by Perlin, where you can discern this portrait of Forster in the background. I wanted to bring a bit of nature to the client’s interior and the long format made me think of Monet’s large waterlily painting that’s in MoMA’s collection, so I used that as a starting point. Portrait of painter George Tooker (1920-2011). Together with Jared French and Paul Cadmus, Tooker's paintings can be understood as magic realism. Tooker, who also used the Renaissance egg-tempera technique to paint, focused on subtle social criticism and created fascinating and rich works. While sharing an atelier with French and Cadmus, Tooker became Cadmus's lover.
