This Day in History: The “other” Paul Revere
On this day in 1751, Samuel Prescott is born in Massachusetts. He is best known for riding with Paul Revere during the early morning hours of April 19, 1775. In fact, when Revere was captured by the British, Prescott was the one who finished the last leg of the ride. In other words, the little-known Prescott, not Revere, warned Concord that the British were coming! As the story goes, Prescott was in Lexington on April 18, courting his fiancé, Miss Lydia Mulliken. He left her family’s home in Lexington quite late, intending to return to his home in Concord. A romantic start, isn’t it? Unfortunately, not every historian is sure that Prescott was actually courting Lydia. Either way, Prescott was on the road from Lexington to Concord in the early morning hours of April 19. The story continues here: https://www.taraross.com/post/tdih-samuel-prescott

On this day, April 18, in 1775,  riders including Paul Revere and William Dawes ride from Charleston to Lexington warning the “regulars are coming!”
Tumblr media
Revere and William Dawes rode (via different routes) from Boston to Lexington to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams that British soldiers were marching from Boston to Lexington to arrest Hancock and Adams and seize the weapons stores in Concord. Revere and Dawes rode toward Concord, where the militia’s arsenal was hidden; they were joined by Samuel Prescott, a doctor who lived in Concord and happened to be in Lexington. Revere, Dawes, and Prescott were stopped by British troops in Lincoln on the road to Concord. Prescott and Dawes escaped, but Revere was detained and questioned and then escorted at gunpoint by three British officers back to Lexington. Of the three riders, only Prescott arrived at Concord in time to warn the militia there.

A pack horse librarian delivering books in rural Kentucky in 1938. During the Great Depression, the Pack Horse Library Project was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) program in which the librarians, who were often called "book women" or "book ladies," delivered books to remote parts of Appalachia.
Librarians are amazing. They love reading so much, they will find a way to get books to people.
