French artist Rosa Bonheur was born on this day in 1822. One of the most famous female painters of her day, she was known primarily for her realistic depictions of animals. She would regularly exhibit and win numerous awards at the Paris Salon from 1841 to 1855, and her work quickly gained popularity around the world. Bonheur’s success provided her not only with economic independence but the freedom to act as she wanted, which included dressing like a man during a time that women would be arrested for indecency if they wore pants. At the time, women were often only reluctantly educated as artists, and her success helped to open doors to the women artists that followed her.
“Barbaro after the Hunt,” around 1858, by Rosa Bonheur

Almost Invisible
Past social and economic pressures made it nearly impossible for women to be artists. Virginia Woolf concluded that poems signed 'anonymous' were probably written by women. In science, contributions of women and ethnic minorities have also been erased from history. Alice Ball, born on this day in 1892, was nearly forgotten. Although she died aged 24, she had a remarkable career. Likely the first Black American to publish in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, she was the first woman to earn a master’s from the University of Hawaii. Most importantly, Ball developed an injectable form of an extract from chaulmoogra tree (pictured) seeds – making it the most effective leprosy treatment for two decades. After her death, the president of the College of Hawaii claimed Ball’s research as his own. Fortunately, historians rediscovered Ball’s story in the 1970s and restored her credit. But how many more brilliant scientists have been pushed to the margins of history?

Vasily Kandinsky, who was born on this day in 1866, advanced the development of abstract art in both his writings and paintings. In 1950 Marcel Duchamp wrote: “In tracing his lines with ruler and compass, [Vasily] Kandinsky opened to the spectator a new way of looking at painting . . . a clear transfer of thought on canvas. This has been the real contribution of Kandinsky towards a conception of esthetics.” These laudatory words easily apply to "Circles in a Circle," in which geometric forms and subtle color harmonies combine to make an effervescent, abstract composition.
"Circles in a Circle," 1923, by Vasily Kandinsky

Burt Lancaster teaching Ava Gardner some acrobatics during the shooting of “The Killers.”
You can just see his delight at being able to share his joy of physical activity, a natural-born athlete as he was; and she was obviously very yar, as they called it in ‘The Philadelphia Story,’ bless her soul, not every girl would be so hearty.
