March 3, 2024 - Hispaniolan Parrot or Hispaniolan Amazon (Amazona ventralis) These parrots are found in palm savannas and mountain forests across Hispaniola and several nearby islands and have also been introduced to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. They feed on fruit, seeds, and sometimes flowers. Breeding from February to May, pairs nest in cavities in palms and cactus, often those created by woodpeckers. Females lay clutches of two to four eggs. They are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN because of habitat loss, persecution as crop-pests, hunting for food, and trapping for the cage-bird trade.
