(I won't apologize for voltron. I am too far past the shame. i wrote a paper on voltron queerbaiting and it got me into college. I owe her everything.)

(this is my fic with the most hits which is great except there's a softcore porn scene in it I forgot about and subsequently subjected my grandpa to when he was reading it and making edits for me. so now it makes me want to die a little thinking about that. no he never brought it up.)

(once someone bookmarked this with the tag 'out of character' and it has haunted me every single fucking day since I read that. WHY DID THEY BOOKMARK IT IF THEY DIDN'T LIKE IT. sorry it drives me crazy. I DONT UNDERSTAND.)

20-year later reboots coming in 2023:

X-Men - An X-Men animated movie created in the style and quality of the 1992 animated series.

Just the 99 of Us - Each child of the Just the Ten of Us family has another 8 children. They all get together when the family patriarch dies. It's a reboot of Too Many Cooks.

Slap Bracelets versus Hypercolor - First film in the Fad-iverse Franchise, followed in 2024 by Bop-It: Origins.

Reboot - Producers refuse to update the AI "for authenticity," but do use rigging technology. Shia Leboeuf voices Gigabyte. The result veers so far into the uncanny valley that early edits incite an on-set murder frenzy. WB execs order a 2nd season.

Murder, They Wrote - Jessica Fletcher’s nibling, Ani finds themselves following in the footsteps of their great-aunt, but they also begin the journey that reveals her deepest secrets. Features a deepfake Jessica Fletcher (Andy Serkis). The series is so painfully Hollywood Woke that it makes Bros look like Steven Universe. Backlash includes GLAAD filing queerbaiting charges against 3 writers, everyone clapping when the series is double-canceled by the CBS CEO via the company’s official Tumblr, and racism against white people briefly becoming a real thing,

Cartoon All-Stars versus Robot Chicken - The titular stars of the 1990 television special band together to hunt Seth Green and Matthew Senreich. First in a trilogy.

Due South - No one from the original series returns in what is essentially copaganda which drifts quickly into softcore gay porn. No one gets it. The second and final season is picked up by Netflix’s spinoff streaming service, Nflx.

Only the Real Ones Know - An aging millennial reflects on his life when he can't pay rent and is forced to live with a house full of zoomers. As the effects of climate change begin to unravel society, he finds he is the only one in the house with the skills to survive. In this series, writing in cursive, using a rotary phone, and using a pencil to fix cassette tapes are the REAL skills required to survive the apocalypse. A remake of The 120 Days of Sodom.

Fat Albert - Ben Shapiro is billed to produce with writing by Milo Yannanapolis and Ye. The racism is unclassifiable but omnipresent. If there was Misogyny at the Olympics, it'd take supergold plus. The script is dadist at its core. Scandal erupts when it's revealed that all creation was performed by an AI trained on Parler posts.

Jurassic Park - The 7th movie in the franchise, it focuses on a Ceratosaurus attempting to realize his vision in a Allosaurus' world. He is unable to realize his dream, but before he dies he sees it realized by his daughter: a park made for amusement with rides and games for dinosaurs of all ages and overpriced concessions. Directed by Damien Chazelle.

podcast: they kissed a bit, also the love interest is a criminal

me: i don’t know how i feel about this but i’m glad they didn’t queerbait. i’m also glad they didn’t start fuckin’ because there’s a huge stereotype about gay promiscuity and if i wanted bad softcore i’d read some fujoshi fic.

podcast: protag also flirts with women

me: nice!!!! bi/pan rep!!

podcast: protag has made out with this woman three times in an extremely short span

me: this... feels forced? he is even more forward with her than he was with the guy. also if i hear that squishy kissing sound effect one more time i am going to throw my phone in The Garbage

podcast: protag admits he can’t continue the relationship because he still has feelings for the first guy (the subtext being that this was rebound behavior, which explains the weird, impulsive overly amourous behavior)

me: [smashing my fists on the table] THAT’S WHAT I’M FUCKIN TALKING ABOUT

Don’t make assumptions about queer people’s experience with queer media based on their age - it’s honestly really rude and assumes that people aren��t old enough to make an informed, genuinely queer opinion on queer issues within the media they watch.

Also, younger queer people don’t grow up with more positive queer representation.

We grow up with a larger quantity of bad queer representation based on toxic stereotypes and thrown around slurs written by people who weren’t us, for people who weren’t us.

We grow up with infinite unrelenting queerbait, softcore porn lesbians and heteronormative fork & spoon gay couples and scads of dead trannies and faggots on law & order svu.

Essentially, we grow up with more televised and visible reasons to hate ourselves.

So stop telling younger people that their critiques, opinions, and views of queer media are somehow less because we grew up with more representation.

Representation isn’t necessarily good.

Queerbait is STILL a problem and is EVOLVING along with the times.

Just because I’m younger than you doesn’t mean you don’t get to assume that I’ve been hurt less by simply seeing myself reflected in the media I experience because let me tell you that is a broken mirror and the shards have left so many scars.

Okay so I finished the last part of the sa/o anime I hadn’t seen like 2 weeks ago and here’s my rankings of the arcs:

1. G.G/O - Okay like, I think this arc was trying to do some interesting things and telling a meaningful story about dealing with trauma and didn’t like, crash and burn every part of it. Main Girl of Arc Falling for K was actually like, the least annoying instance of this. Also there was only one. Could have done without evil boy trying to assault Sin*n but also made sense for the kind of villain he was? would definitely suck less if sa/o didn’t just suck in general. Bits where everyone just monologues about how great K is are obnoxious. Also definitely wish As*na got to like. Do Something. Besides cry and pray.

2. Ain/cr*d - had a really interesting premise and then just fucking tripped and dropped the ball right into a pit of annoying and bad anime tropes. But when I finished it I was like, severely disappointed instead of like. Angry. Too many female characters after K’s dick like please stop. Fan service was present but not like, totally derailing anything. I care about As*na and i wanted this stupid show to be better

3. Mother’s Ros/ari.o? That’s what this part is called? And is apparently just a side story? - Love focusing on Asun*, fell for the queerbaiting, somehow didn’t see ‘lesbian dying from super AIDS’ coming but once it was there knew it couldn’t be anything else, because s.a/o ruins everything it touches in the worst way

4. A.L/O - hell. Takes my dashed dreams from arc 1 an grinds them to a pulp before throwing them into the sewer. Remember the fanservice that was kind of annoyed you in arc 1? dial it up to 11 and break the knob off. Sick of any and all main female characters falling head over heels for protag boy? Well we’re gonna do it again, and also this time it’s his little sister. Felt like As*na didn’t get to do enough at the end of arc 1? now she literally just gets to be the prize for K and creep of the arc to fight over, with a quick gig being the victim of softcore tentacle porn assault, by monsters that did not fit the theme of anything. Also final confrontation includes her being assaulted again and K committing acts of gratuitous violence against his foe after incapacitating him and before freeing As*na. Why. why did you do this to me. I just wanted to know what happened to A after arc 1 was over.
