I'm really glad to have found the Hermitcraft fandom here on Tumblr, I've been a long time fan and it's awesome to discover all this great fanart and content and stuff. Any must-follow MCYT/Hermitcraft/Minecraft blogs?
oh gosh, welcome! in general i am BAD about remembering who i follow and who i don't; a great way to find who you want to follow might be to just go through the #hermitcraft tag and follow people you find funny, or, heck, if i reblog a lot of art from a certain artist you like (or not a lot, like one art even), go follow them!
while we're here, a few additional general etiquette rules (keeping in mind that like, this is tumblr, trying to claim ANYTHING is a whole-community norm is basically impossible i am claiming a norm from my specific circle of guys): do not crosstag, only tag things that are actually in your post. don't use the 'minecraft' tag, that tag is for people who like the actual game. (i mean, you can use it if you are posting about minecraft, but not if you're posting about the youtubers). it's generally considered rude to put your crit in the main tags, especially without tagging 'discourse' somewhere so it can be filtered. shipping should generally have a 'hermitshipping' tag on it for filtering purposes as well, but if something is tagged hermitshipping and you're mad about it just like, block them, they did the important part.
the hermits i know of on tumblr (could be more, idk): @/joehills @/pearlescentmoo @/falsesymmetry @/therealdocm77 (not actually active but has the account) @/geminitayyt. cleo also had an account but it is no longer active. also @/inthelittlewood is here and like very active, as is @/askzloyxp and @/quinnhills. as a general etiquette rule, just... act like they're perfectly ordinary tumblr users and continue your business as usual! and don't send them weird asks or anything.

Can you elaborate on the actor-hermitship thing? I'm intrigued

I'm an actor. I've been acting for years and it's something I really enjoy. Most importantly for this, I've done classes on improv and been a member of an improv troupe.
In improv, just like in scripted acting, I'm playing a character. That character may seem just like me: I'm using my same name, I'm hanging out with my friends, I look like me, I have my same interests and life stories, etc. However, that character is not me, because from the moment I step on that stage, everything I say is for the audience or my fellow actors.
There are a lot of similarities between my improv character and me, that's true. Some audience members might even think that I'm not playing a character. That's simply untrue--if an actor is onstage, they're acting, no matter what kind of show you're seeing.
Everything you see in an improv show is acting, because we have an audience. If I make a stupid joke to my scene partner onstage (even if we aren't in the scene), I'm actually making a stupid joke for the audience to hear and for my scene partner to have something to react to. If audience members started to ship another member of the troupe with me, we would probably play it up for the audience to keep them invested. Same rules for a rivalry. Nothing you see in an improv performance is realistic for how those people act outside of the show--we may be swearing death and vengeance upon each other onstage, but offstage there's nothing between us because that was all character work.
In theatre, if you have a good director you do warm-ups to get into character before a show, then de-rolls to get out of character after a show. Improv is no exception, even if there aren't lines to rehearse and costumes to wear. You have no idea the amount of times I've been approached by people I don't know after a show who say "you're so good at coming up with quick answers, I could never!" versus the people who know me who say "you were totally different up there. why did you put twizzlers in your sock".
If you don't see improv actors as having characters for improv, you probably aren't an actor, or you're not acting right. Acting of any kind requires detachment from the character so you don't go insane (which is why method acting is harmful to your mental and emotional state, but that's an entirely different post). It's really important to have distance between yourself and whoever you are for an audience--that way, when an audience laughs or boos, you know it isn't a comment on you personally, just the persona you've put on.
Which I guess is all to say, all Minecraft Youtubers are acting, because they have an audience. You have no idea what their personal life is like or how they behave off camera. A series like Hermitcraft may be unscripted, and the characters may seem very similar to the content creators, but it's improv, which at the end of the day is theatre.
There are some very clear examples of this (the season 7 turf war, the moon arc in season 8), and some not-so-clear examples (recent sculk pranks, boatem meetings, or outside of Hermitcraft, the way Jimmy's friends bully him). Everything they do on camera is to benefit the audience, or to give another character something to build off of. That's just the way improv works.

Rules for new tumblr users
I'm sure people will have seen other mcyt blogs first and they've all given warnings but I'm just making this to pin at the top of my blog and so I can edit it when I inevitably realise I've forgotten something.
General ground rules:
If you have a default profile picture, blog and haven't reblogged anything, you will likely get blocked as a potential spam account. It doesn't have to be a lot, just search the tags for some of your interests and reblog some cool art or something.
You have to curate your own dashboard on tumblr. Search and follow the tags of things you enjoy, find users within those tags you want to see more from, follow and reblog posts from them. And if you aren't enjoying yourself, don't be afraid to unfollow people again (we don't usually pay attention to follower counts) and block tags/people if you really aren't happy seeing them.
If you want to keep things nice and neat, most of us will have a main blog (the one you get when you join the website) and then for any particularly strong interests will have a side blog. You can't like or follow from side blogs, but you can reblog things easily and people can follow side blogs if they share that interest with you. You can even make group blogs by going to the side bar of your sideblog and clicking 'members'!
Don't censor words, especially in the tags. You won't get reported or 'shadowbanned' for saying words like 'kill' or 'fuck' and if you do censor them then people who have them as blocked words and may be triggered by them will see them anyway.
When you join tumblr, there will automatically be sections showing what you've liked and who you've followed publically visible on your blog. Not only can you make these invisible in your settings, but we actively encourage it! People don't usually pay attention to them anyway but it's easier for you to like the things you want when you know people won't see them and judge you.
If you want to have a conversation with other people and get replies, put what you want to say in the main text of reblogs. If you're just trying to add a funny comment or say things without people responding to them, put it in the hashtags or as a reply. It means you can reblog things from other people without also having to reblog hundreds of people's random little comments.
Mcyt specific:
If you're gonna make posts, use 'mcyt' rather than the word 'mine/craft' when you're tagging. That tag is reserved for people who want to talk about the game and if you start talking about your blorbos in their tag, you will be told off for it. Same with tags where the word is included, use (e.g. use mc championships instead of the full name because it will still get picked up by the game's tag)
There are people in the mcyt communities on tumblr who ship and will post about those ships in the main tags. I'm personally not one of those people and try to avoid it where possible but you will inevitably come across it. If that's not your thing, don't make posts raving about how terrible it is or start harrassing them. If you don't want to see it just block the people doing it, block the relevant tags and move on. The communities here are pretty good at tagging their stuff using 'hermitshipping' for hermitcraft, 'trafficshipping' for the life series, 'empireshipping' for empires, and 'dsmpshipping' for dream smp. I don't think it happens much for dsmpblr but the others it's a regular occurence.
A lot of us (including myself) don't want to be noticed by content creators! We were here first and for the people who write fics or make art, they may feel uncomfortable posting if there's a chance a CC will see it. I believe Aimsey's now saying there's an 'Aimsey look' tag that they will go through each week so only people who wanted to be noticed will be, and I know we can't really do much to stop CCs going through the hashtags but just don't @ them in posts unless they're your own or OP specifically says you can.
No drama please! This is supposed to be a chill space and people moving over from twitter aren't going to ruin that. We've been here longer than you have, so you're the guests under our house rules. This is especially the case when it comes to MCCs. Leave Scott and Noxcrew be!
This is a personal one but please don't complain to me about buildmart. Yes I know people hate it and think it's unfair but I and other people here really enjoy it so I will simply block people who complain about it. We're all entitled to opinions but it's really tiring to see people shit on it once a month every month.

hi! i was wondering where the hermits have said theyre okay with their characters being shipped? i just know it can be a lot for someone since the character has the same name and appearance of the persona they use for themselves, so i wanted to check sources
okay. um. yeah. a few thoughts here:
• why are you asking me this??? I'm not even really a shipper I just think it's shitty to be an asshole to people who are shippers, WHICH. by the way. is the stance EVERYONE should have. literally just don't be an asshole!!!!
• I'm not going to pull sources out of my ass and I'm not going to go find them for you. I don't owe you anything, and especially since you phrased this kind of accusationally? honestly you're lucky I'm taking the time to answer at all, because I DO have a real life, yknow, where you touch grass and all that.
• it is PRETTY FUCKING WELL KNOWN that the hermits don't much give a shit what you do in fanworks as long as you tag properly. IN FACT, ZombieCleo themself was harassed off tumblr by the anti-hermitshipping crowd because they literally said "do whatever you want as long as you tag it". ALSO, the only hermit who uses their real name is Joe??? and almost all fan designs atleast on here are pretty different from the actual skins, much less the IRL PERSON. I honestly don't know how to explain to you that they're pretty fucking clearly characters. And I could absolutely go on about the double standard when it comes to shipping in mcyt and specifically in the helsblr (Hermitcraft/empires/3L LL, it was a joke name but I like it so I'm using it) circle, but that's a lot of effort I don't want to give to you tbh and also not what you asked.
I don't know if you're new here or something, because frankly this kind of reads like the stuff I saw in my brief stint on twitter. but not only have multiple hermits expressed that they don't care, you also realize that if they did care they would say something? if what fandom did was bothering them, they would have ZERO qualms about speaking up about it. like, Tango did that when he asked people not to draw/otherwise depict him with horns, and the fandom listened and have stood by that since!
And, just to wrap things up, because we're still fucking BAFFLED that I got this ask???

With Grian practically tripping over himself, unable to string together more than a few words, getting lunch together was awfully hard. Ren was awkwardly trying to excuse himself to put on a shirt, but was reluctant to leave Grian. At the same time Ren was also blushing at Grian seeing him shirtless, and fumbling his words as well. Impulse was still keeping his gaze firmly averted from the unclothed parts of Ren.
Impulse had finally just ordered Ren off.
“Ren,” He started, “Go back to the R.V., and for goodness sake, please put a shirt on.” Impulse was rubbing the bridge of his nose, with his eyes closed.
“Right!” Ren hurried off, embarrassed.
Once Ren had left, Gian was quick to calm down a bit, and came to help Impulse prepare lunch. Grian was still flushed, and refused to look at Impulse. As if it would keep Impulse from noticing what had just happened.
“So… Why wasn’t he wearing a shirt?” Grian asked, clearly trying to distract him.
Impulse decided to humor Grian. “He got hot, and dumped water on himself. Then he was wet, so he stripped.” Impulse internally winced at his terrible phrasing. Grian just nodded absentmindedly, so he probably didn’t catch it.
“So. What’s up with the way you were eying Ren?” Impulse grilled him very un-subtly. Impulse wasn’t even going to try to be inconspicuous. He could maybe surprise Grian into giving him the answers he needed. He already knew Grian and Ren were into each other, but with confirmation, he could do… something.
“I-I! I wasn’t eyeing him!” Grian stuttered back. Impulse smirked internally. Bingo.
“Mhmm. So I didn’t just catch you staring at his chest. His shirtless chest.” Impulse raised an eyebrow, internally struggling to maintain his own composure.
“Face it. You have a major crush on him.” Impulse prodded him.
“I know. I think he feels the same way, but… I just don’t know what to do. I’m terrified of misreading the situation and losing him.” Grian looked down.
“I wouldn’t worry about that if I were you. Ren almost definitely feels the same way.” Impulse reassured Grian.
“Sure.” Grian was clearly doubtful. Ren elected not to pursue the conversation.
“You can’t tell him. If he likes me, then he’ll say something eventually. I don’t want to mess this up. Do you promise, Impulse?” Grian said abruptly. His voice was hard, and Impulse instinctively knew not to mess with him.
“Yeah. I promise.” Impulse said begrudgingly.
Those two were so hopeless! Impulse usually didn’t mess with other’s business, but… Well. Those two might not even get together by the time they got Grian’s time machine back, at this point. They would surely forgive him some meddling for a good cause. And Impulse had the perfect idea. Old, sure, but true classics are timeless. Plus, he had kinda just promised not to tell Ren that Grian liked him. He just had one thing to do first.
Impulse cornered Ren after they had finished eating, and Grian had left. It had tugged at his heartstrings to see him go, and to see Ren miss him. He had to do this now, before Ren left, or dragged him on another adventure. And hopefully stop the two from giving each other those heartbreaking puppy eyes. They would do it when they thought no-one was looking.
“So,” Impulse began, “Grian.” he stated firmly.
“What about him?” Ren asked nervously. He knew exactly what Impulse meant. Too bad he wouldn’t just accept that Impulse wasn’t going to let this go.
“You like him. You like him a lot.” Impulse said.
“Yeah. I do.” Ren admitted.
Impulse nodded. That made this whole thing justifiable. Okay, maybe not. He knew that Ren liked Grian, and Grian liked Ren. Maybe he could tell Grian that Ren liked him. But without actual proof, it was unlikely that Grian would believe him. Back to plan A, then.
“Why haven’t you asked him out yet?” Impulse questioned.
“He… likes someone else, I think.” Ren said hesitantly. Impulse was floored. Seriously?! He’d literally just had Grian thinking Ren didn’t like him, now he had to deal with Ren thinking Grian liked someone else?
“Who.” Impulse said flatly. Ren just looked away. Impulse sighed internally. He wasn’t getting anymore out of Ren. Time to move on.

Not to be That Clueless Fool, but,,, what exactly happened in 2019? I know in general that it was about shipping, but I'm, uh, curious about details. Is there some sort of post explaining it? Or bits of information here and there is the best I can find?
bits of information here and there might be the best you find, I dont think theres a single fandom historian who's recorded all of that. Maybe one day someone will try and reconstruct the narrative from posts and individual's memories?
but anyway, the way I remember it is this:
one day, something Snaps. something changes, and people who dislike hermitshipping, the non-shippers, are upset about seeing hermitship content. Instead of blocking tags/accounts, an "us vs them" mentality crops up. Tags get spammed. People get harassed. They try and create a new maintag to "escape the shippers". artist cactus-block is ""outed"" as being a shipper and their blog is spam reported; they remake as cooler-cactus-block and say fuck it & fuck those people! and then their art becomes unabashedly Mildly Horny and hermitshippy (more power to ya). There were a few non-shipper ringleaders, I think, who relentlessly harass several people, including a system they're convinced is faking DID to "get away with shipping", for.... some reason?
hermitshippers basically had to go into hiding; there was no True neutrality. i myself at first leaned toward the non-ship side but I tend to be very influenced by the narratives in a community because I kinda want to fit in? and so I found myself latching onto a voice of reason - lime of limelocked, who's beacon of morality basically said "just block and move on wtf"
When cleo joined tumblr, she was asked about shipping; she clarified the hermit perspective (they dont discuss shipping nor do they see it; cleo is fine with being shipped; if the hermits have a problem with it in the future they can speak for themselves, until then just block and move on instead of being dicks). people dont like this and cleo is promptly harassed off of tumblr
apparently people may have received death threats and threats of doxing, but that's kind of murky. I think some of them were fake?
oh also the non-shippers very much wanted to dictate what was and wasnt okay for fic to be written about- not just shippy fic, but a fic where a hermit was influenced by a higher power and became violent was called I think ableist? and the fic was basically seen as Bad and Wrong and the author may have been harassed also?? the attitude of the time was that the fic got treated the same way shippers did: looked down on and shunned
I think the non-shippers felt like their actions were noble, especially because the discourse kicked into gear probably right after the SMP Live "serious stream" about stan culture; I wouldn't be surprised if the collapse of smptwt and the failure of shipping in that fandom influenced the non-shippers' instigation of the conflict.
all the conflict and tension drove a Lot of people away from hermitblr, which really sucks; the conflict only really died down fully with the advent of season 7, which brought in new viewers without the baggage of what had happened here.
anon, I'm sure you could dig up ancient posts on my blog (probably under #hermitcraft discourse or #discourse), and probably more on others' blogs. If anybody happens to know if they still have reblogs from that era extant somewhere, maybe we could start like... a community archive of the discourse that happened (and all posts related to it), so we can have a time capsule of exactly what Not to do? just a thought of course, and nobody retraumatize yourselves to provide that please

Doesn't matter if Worman and Ex are considered extensions of the peeps or the peeps themselves I think it should still be tagged as hermitshipping since they're directly linked to hermitcraft
Also it's easier to block a fandom shipping tag than abuncha ship tags so for peeps who don't like romancy stuff it's easier on them
extremely valid take tbh! i was thinking more in general as whether it counts as rpf aligned/shipping the hermits but ur right for tagging purposes it should definitely go under the umbrella just to be safe.
