Vandermeer’s Record Player
This is not strictly a mapping post, but I felt it should go here, anyway.
While taking new and imporved screenshots of La Sirena from season 1 of Star Trek Picard, I have made a discovery!
There is a small-ish case Rios keeps in his chest of Starfleet things. It sports a very fetchiing ibn Majid decal and I always assumed it contained more ship’s mementos that we just never get to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I took a bunch of screenshot of this scene in ep8, “Broken Pieced”, today, and now that I finally have all of these episodes in 1080p bluray resolution and am staring at them in that sort of detail, I realized something: This is not a simple case! This is Captain Vandermeer’s record player!
Tumblr media
You can see the cover with the ibn Majid sticker lying behind the case, and you can see the handle at the front.
And just to verify this discovery, I went looking for the original model, et voilà:
Tumblr media
This is the Vestax Handy Trax USB Portable Turntable!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It doesn’t look like these are being produced anymore, but if you have a bunch of vinyl records and are desperate to listen to them the exact way Rios does, you know what to look for in second hand markets ;)
@cristobalrios: Feel free to add this observation to our collection of Sirena props. I’m pretty sure you have the most complete record of all of our collected discoveries ;)

So, I have another plot bunny.
I just got an idea for a Top Gun fusion AU with Star Trek Picard where Cris was a Navy pilot and Vandermeer was his former wingman. Or vice versa. Someone stop me and tell me this is crazy, please.
Also-- Rios is Maverick here. I'm trying to decide if he should be with Agnes or a self-insert character, as I have an intense dislike for Teresa, his S2 love interest.

1) How much do you want to bet that Evil!Vandermeer shows up in the second season of Picard
2) Are you going to sue Paramount for stealing your ideas if that happens? 🤣🤣

PicardPositivity Day 1: Soji Asha You Look As If You’ve Seen a Ghost: Soji Asha and Cristóbal Rios
[ I have a much more Soji-focused poem that I posted on my personal, see Through the Cries of Ganmadan They Will Come to You, and this one is more Rios, Vandermeer and Jana-related, but Soji comes at the end and what happened with Jana is such an important part of Rios's relationship with her that I am posting it anyway. ]

The Albatross
He shot the albatross and it will bring our demise. To spill innocent blood on our ship; with the beautiful flower she lies. Oh heart! Be still, he did it to save us all. He didn’t know he had been caught within the siren’s call.
Painted on the wall behind him, the bleeding drops of red. Now in my arms my captain lies, fallen cold and dead. My captain is a killer, in cold blood they had died. My captain is a hero; he saved us all, I cried.
Will his name go down in history, as the hero he was meant to be? Will he die in infamy, or vanish into obscurity? His story has been erased; He’s gone without a trace, Except within my fragmented mind, his final resting place.
Alone, I sailed among the stars, all alone in space so vast. To never be looked on in pity and run away from my past. They tried to break through my walls, but I still had to mourn. But then I saw her face again, the albatross, reborn.

@ Lower Decks, this Picard fan (Rios fan, specifically) humbly requests some Captain Vandermeer content.
Or maybe Marta Batanides and have her mention Vandermeer like "Alonzo told me there's this promising young pilot he would love to make his Number One" I just
It would be a nice niche easter egg like you love so much, and it'd be connecting new shows how beautiful would that be

So ever since episode 3 “The End is the Beginning,” I’ve been convinced that there was some big significance behind Cris having two armchairs in his quarters.
Tumblr media
Guess what? I think I was right.
Like, what is the point of that second seat? Here, Cris is still presenting himself as a ‘broody existentialist space man’ who lives completely alone on his ship. We know from minute one that most of the “I’m fine on my own and I need no friend” attitude is utter bs and that he is just terribly sad, afraid to care, and way too hurt, but we don’t know what happened.
I thought that having two armchairs was just a subtle way of telling us that there is room for a friend in Cris’ heart (his quarters symbolizing his heart), but that nobody is there to fill that room (we don’t learn until the next episode and its Ready Room recap just how deep Cris and Raffi’s relationship goes).
It hit me today. See how everything on la Sirena is modern and shiny? Everything is impeccably maintained, everything is Starfleet standard? Well, the armchairs aren’t. Know what else isn’t 24th century tech?

Paper books about life and death.
Everything that Cris owns that’s almost ridiculously outdated for the 24th century is directly linked to Alonzo Vendermeer, Cris’ dad Captain.
Two old, non-regulation armchairs that look very comfy and definitely out of place in the world of a man who takes scars over dermal regenerators and pours alcohol on his open wounds instead of actually cleaning them and taking a goddamn painkiller. Probably two armchairs that Alonzo had in *his* quarters.
The seats don’t represent Cris’ desire to have friends.
They are the constant reminder of Alonzo Vendermeer’s absence, and they are in Cris’ quarters, aka his heart, because there’s a permanently empty spot there, not one that can be filled.
GODDAMMIT, writers!

It's something to do with his time on the ibn Majid, with his captain. Aye, Captain Alonzo Vandermeer. Well, what about him? Were they close? Is he alive?

La Sirena, is a warp capable Kaplan F-17 Speed Freighter owned by ex-Starfleet officer, Captain Cristóbal Rios. Rios was the executive officer of the USS ibn Majid (NCC-75710) before becoming disillusioned with Starfleet after a traumatic event, resulting in the death of his Captain and mentor, Alonzo Vandermeer.

The Syrios Family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Left: S'vec Rios Sylar, @ihlonhae, fc; Chris Evans, Vulcan - Right: Cristóbal Lorenzo Rios, @cristobalrios, fc; Santiago Cabrera, human)
Tumblr media
(Left: S'vec Rios Alonzo, namesake Alonzo Vandermeer, Cris's deceased captain and father-figure, half-Vulcan/half-human - Right: S'vec Rios T'Alaro "T'Alarita," name meaning "Lady of Beloved Vulcan", half-Vulcan/half-human - Generated by FaceApp by combining Chris Evans and Santiago Cabrera)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Left: Alonzo's fc Bryan Dechart - Right: T'Alaro's fc Anya Taylor-Joy)
So, for the Syrios kids (S'vec Rios Alonzo and S'vec Rios T'Alaro), we've decided on Bryan Dechart and Anya Taylor-Joy for their faceclaim approximations.
Alonzo's Joined Trill bondmate Kara Vehl's faceclaim is Candice King
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Left: Kara Vehl - Right: Alonzo)
And their future child (who Kara is currently pregnant with), so far with the possible name Cristóbal Jorel (at least Kara said they're thinking about naming him after Cris and after her father Jorel, so that'd make sense), half-Trill/one-quarter human/one-quarter Vulcan, his faceclaim approximation is Troye Sivan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Left: S'vec Rios Cristóbal Jorel generated on FaceApp by combining Candice King and Bryan Dechart - Right: S'vec Rios Cristóbal Jorel's fc Troye Sivan with the Vulcan ears and eyebrows and Trill spots edits made - half-Trill/one-quarter human/one-quarter Vulcan. Namesake Two of his grandfathers, Cris, from his father's side, and Jorel, from his mother's side)
Now, T'Alaro's hypothetical plan is to marry one of the Klingon holograms in Nueva T'Paal Mak'ala and have a holographic half-Klingon/quarter-human/quarter-Vulcan baby, but we don't have any idea of how that baby would look yet.
If we ever get an approximation of that and/or what T'Alaro's Klingon bondmate looks like I'll update this.
FaceApp images generated by, edits made by, and faceclaims chosen by @ihlonhae. Sylar edit PSD made by @somresources.

//It is almost certainly an altered timeline but it doesn't look directly Mirror Universe, though I kind of get those vibes (at least the dark AU part) - partially a good thing because while I love that outfit I still really want mirror Cris to have an eyepatch. Ik people have mentioned the absence of synths in this but Soji (we assume) is there and as far as I know her design wasn't based on an actual person, just someone Data made up so she's probably Soji still + she still has that symbol Maddox and Soong gave her and Soji as necklaces, but this time it's a pin (but iirc in a Mirror Universe episode of DS9 Vic Fontaine was human not a hologram, but I doubt they're try to pull something like that on us now)
I would still love to see Jana, Beautiful Flower and the Ibn Majid (what if she was never deleted from the records in this timeline?? I mean, Cris is still in Starfleet here apparently) but I don't think they're going to do anything with Vandermeer. The actor, Vincent Teixeira isn't in much, mostly like... in things he's uncredited for (like this) or in small roles that mostly don't have names according to IMDB. This might be interesting for him but like it seems to me that they're not planning any more than that one photo for that character or maybe more photos in the future but not really a lot. Which is unfortunate, I really want to meet Vandermeer, really want the Ibn Majid and to see Jana and Beautiful Flower

Half-baked time travel AU
After so long spent in Starfleet, where time travel incidents and seemingly supernatural events are common place, Picard would have thought that there was nothing that left in the galaxy that could surprise him. He was still capable of awe, of wonder, of amazement, but of surprise? Ironically enough, it surprised him to find out that he was.
The whole crew stared at the man lying prone on the floor of the bridge. He wore a Starfleet uniform - black with red shoulders, like a Captain's - and had tanned skin, and grey hair that was turning white.
Rios was the first to tear his gaze away, looking at them all instead with a look that Picard recognized as terrified. Raffi took a step forward, reaching out. Rios stumbled back, his eyes wide and his breathing harsh.
"Cris…" Raffi tried with the gentleness Picard had seen her display towards their Captain on many occasions. "Cris, look at me."
"Raffi," the man gasped, "Raffi, I think I'm losing it."
Picard was intimately familiar with panic and despair, but what he was seeing etched on the younger man's face went far beyond either emotion. Rios' usually guarded eyes were an open window on a terribly wounded soul now bleeding afresh. On the ground, the man groaned and started to stir, and Rios started badly, his dark eyes darting to the apparition.
"Honey," Raffi tried again as she realized he was losing himself in a memory, "baby, calm down. You're not losing it. We're seeing him too."
Cris pressed a fist that shook badly to his mouth, keeping in the sounds that were threatening to burst out.
"How?" He whimpered.
The EMH finally fizzled into existence, startling them all. They had all completely forgotten about him.
"What is the nature of your psychiatric emergency?" Emil asked calmly. Then there was a pause as the ship's computers analyzed the scene playing out on the bridge, and Emil's eyes widened too. "Bloody hell," he murmured, "is that…?"
"That's Captain Vandermeer," Soji blurted out.
In the half-second it took Raffi to glare at her, Cris had stormed off the bridge.
