Alocasia Regal Shield Coming Back
Observation is a super important skill yo work on.
I discover root rot, by observing the behavior of this plant. She was losing leaves to fast, light levels was great and it just felt not normal for their cycle. So I took her out of the soil and check the roots. About 50% was rotten!
I cut the rotten roots, clean them and potted her in a smaller plastic pot. She's being in recovery since then. Now she lives in my office space with supplemental light and she's putting lots of leaves!

Over spring break I repotted most of my plants and I have a lot of alocasia so I collected some of their corms. I’ve been growing them in like a makeshift greenhouse (that’s totally definitely not a dog treat jar that I stole from my neighbor’s dumpster). And and and I have my first leaf.

The abominably hot summer killed a lot of plants. The alocasias and colocasias fared poorly in general; a lot of them started to emerge from dormancy, got sucker punched by the heat, and promptly rotted from well-intentioned watering. 'Regal Shields', happily, just went dormant, and returned in the fall* without much fuss. It really shouldn't be up in January, but hey, why not at this point?
*by which I mean November.

The older leaves at the bottom tend to droop overtime and die but it produces a new leaf for every two that I lose. Very finicky but a survivor.

Plant Growth - Alocasia Regal Shields
This is June 2019 vs June 2021. Two years of love, consistency and patience. Look at the size of the damn leaves... I'm in love! 💚
✓Bright to Medium indirect light.
✓Let the soil dry the top inch of soil before watering again.
✓I add a couple of coffee grounds twice a year.
✓They like medium to high humidity.

The Alocasia Regal Shield took my breath away. Found this beauty hanging out in the hydroponics section of the nursery. I cannot get over the contrast between the leaf and the veins beneath it. If I couldn’t have him, I still needed a photo of the beauty.

My alocasia regal shield is putting out 2 inflorescences?? Flowers?? I don't even know! I haven't looked up what they're supposed to look like to keep extra excitement through the process.
