3rd April >> Mass Readings (USA)
Easter Wednesday
(Liturgical Colour: White. Year: B(II))
First Reading
Acts of the Apostles 3:1–10
What I do have I give you: in the name of the Lord Jesus, rise and walk.
Peter and John were going up to the temple area for the three o’clock hour of prayer. And a man crippled from birth was carried and placed at the gate of the temple called “the Beautiful Gate” every day to beg for alms from the people who entered the temple. When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked for alms. But Peter looked intently at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” He paid attention to them, expecting to receive something from them. Peter said, “I have neither silver nor gold, but what I do have I give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, rise and walk.” Then Peter took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles grew strong. He leaped up, stood, and walked around, and went into the temple with them, walking and jumping and praising God. When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the one who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with amazement and astonishment at what had happened to him.

Speak, Mary, declaring What you saw, wayfaring. “The tomb of Christ, who is living, The glory of Jesus’ resurrection; bright angels attesting, The shroud and napkin resting. Yes, Christ my hope is arisen; to Galilee he goes before you.” Christ indeed from death is risen, our new life obtaining. Have mercy, victor King, ever reigning! Amen. Alleluia.

Gospel
Luke 24:13–35
They recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread.
That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?” And he replied to them, “What sort of things?” They said to him, “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his Body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures. As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the Eleven and those with them who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

hellu hellu gloss here ( s/h, 21+ ) n happy opening day 2 us all!!! can't wait 2 get plottin n interactin w all ur cool muses ♡ im gna be writing for mr venture capitalist, wolf of ansan street, jin hansol!! he's lived in astra nearly all his life and only recently got his ass booted 2 ansan bc his rich n influential daddi-o pulled some strings to get his ass kicked out so ... awkward ... but yes!! you can find more nonsense info on hansol under the cut, but as alw, pls hit that LIKE button n ill come runnin into ur dms!!! also if u have d*scord pls pls lmk bc i cannot for the life of me keep up w tumblr ims orz edit 10/07: so i've decided hansol is gna take on a fake identity as some not-from-ansan dude named kim wonshik bc the anti-astra sentiment in nightrunners ( aka the place he's tryna infiltrate n gentrify ) is p strong and his family is too much of a household name rn!! he's gna be known as jin hansol in business and clinical settings but other times he's gna be known as wonshik but yep!! so muses from ansan prob only ever know of him as wonshik unless we plot otherwise <3
if ur an astrology h0 like me then ♡ he's a leo sun / scorpio moon / aries rising which explains a lot of his fuckassery behaviours 👅
lil backstory: his family owns cynet cybernetics, a v longstanding company and one of the major providers of androids ( aka ai robots / humanoids that run around doin ur house chores 4 u... yep... )!! they were one of the first in astra 50y ago which means hansol was born in astra!! he's Never been to ansan and honestly kinda looks down on it ( pun not intended ) so we know where this is goin 🥶
anw he's born middle child between big bro n lil sis n was unsurprisingly neglected : )) he was alm exclusively raised by cynet androids yikers so altho his physical needs were tended 2 as a kid ( 2 the point of overindulgence honestly ), his emotional needs is that year 1 science textbook sittin in the deep corner beggin 2 b read
a lot of his experience shaped who he was as a teen!! he was a bit of a black sheep n would alw get into tons of trouble like tw underage drinking and drug use n it was all rlly j his own way of trying to get his father's attention!! it seemed like those were the only times his dad ever acknowledged his existence even tho it was usually j 2 express his disappointment
meanwhile his obnoxiously overachieving older bro is taken under daddi-o's wing when he comes of age, even starts 2 intern @ cynet n this pushes hansol to clean up his act!! ofc given his track record his dad is Not goin 2 award him the same internship @ cynet so he ends up trying to prove himself in other ways aka scoring deals, funding startups w his sizeable pocket money, buying out said startups when it shows promise!! he's also a bit of a gambler n even got the rights to revel mayb ab 1y ago in a moderately high-stakes poker games so uh... revel peeps say hi 2 ur absentee owner ♡ also has a ton of body mods to help him cheat in these poker games aka cyberaudio 2 b able to pick up change in tone aka if the person is lying n cyberoptics which helps him read hidden cards!! i'll update his body mods page someday rip
ofc despite all his efforts, none of these r big enough to impress his dad so he goes higher!!! word spreads ab his 'talent' @ the game n this leads to his invitation to play a v v high-stakes poker game w the big boys aka dad's competitors friends!! it's to the point that they don't dabble in cash anymore so this is rlly The Game that would get him his father's attn if he won so he rlly goes all in!! all of the jin family members get a small share of cynet to ensure that the company stays in the family and ultimately overpowers non-relative shareholders in big decisions, n bc hansol is positive he's gna win ( bc he's cheating lol ) he bets his share of cynet eek
ends up LOSING bc it turns out they were cheating too but !! he only knows they're cheating bc he's cheating so can u imagine how that argument is goin 2 go down : )) so yeah cynet is so super impt 2 his family n his dad was absolutely livid to find out that hansol gambled his share away n chalked it up 2 his 'delinquent activities' being so bad 2 the point where it's not only detrimental 2 himself but 2 his family!!! anw 2 regain that cynet share that hansol lost, his dad reports him to the authorities for cheating ( dad obv found out ab his mods bc whose credit card do u think he's usin to install em ) n pulls some strings to get him kicked tf out of astra
so yeah now he's here!! it's been 3 months since n he's still trying to prove himself, this time 2 prove 2 his dad that he's a better businessman than his dad will ever be n the first step is 2 get himself back on astra!! of interest one of his current ventures is to gentrify the betting ring @ the nightrunners races n j make it more organised / official but understandably the nightrunners want their own representative runnin these bets so yeah this means hansol is tryna officially become a nightrunner
personality wise i'd say he's v cunning, likes to think he's more like his dad than his brother is bc he can be p cutthroat and he knows a good deal when he sees one ( n honestly it's true it's prob why his dad loathes him extra ) n he takes a lot of pride in it!! ( yeah he's got a capital D for daddy issues )
also has a bit of a one-track mind so it's like if it's related 2 wtv business venture he's focused on then he'll care 2 the point of obsession n micromanaging but if it's not a priority then he will literally pretend it doesn't exist!! what this means espc socially is if ur someone who's eg a nightrunner he'll be v present 2 u but if ur eg working @ revel he literally could not give less of a shit u prob won't even recognise him that's how absent he is
he can be really charming when he wants to be but honestly it's j part of the game, v wolf of wall street villain coded, has a predatory instinct @ pursuing wealth n will stop at nothing rlly
this is also bad but in line w bein raised by androids n just not respecting ansan at all it can sometimes feel like he's treating ansan as sorta his playground n by extension he doesn't rlly treat a lot of ppl from ansan like real humans n this may sometimes be sorta alluded to in j how he talks or the things he does......... but yeah this sorta goes back 2 his stuff w the nightrunners, like j not respecting their races n stuff n j seeing it as a business opportunity but idk!! mayb w more time in ansan he'll have a good character arc n learn 2 care for things
err as alw i've rambled on waaay too much so if uve made it this far i wanna personally thank u ♡ also below r some plots 2 get us started w the brainstormin!!
since he's p hyperfocused on the nightrunners rn i feel like @ nightrunners there'd b plenty of opportunities 4 positive n negative interactions!! mayb he's tricked u w his charm n u think he genuinely loves racing n shit teehee or ur sus ab his motivations n ur sleepin w one eye open when he's around idk!! i'd also love a nightrunner who's a friend of his ( who he probably approached when he heard ab the existence of these races ) who queued him in that nightrunners only want their own people runnin these bets, which gives him the bright idea 2 become a nightrunner!!
did i mention he loves a good gamble <333 anyone who's a gambling fiend urself pls step right up!!! he also prob places bets on fighters @ the underground so if ur muse is a fighter mayb he places a bet on u!! or against u!! hansol is also not above cheatin so imagine he approaches u n tells u to lose on purpose or smth n he'll give u money in return....
alternatively anyone working @ revel say hello 2 ur boss 😩 i imagine the prev boss was a little more hands on bc they actually cared a lil more for revel and since the ownership's passed to him it's rlly j been goin downhill... also fun thread where he dines @ revel for the first time n mayb he doesn't pay n they confront him n he's like i own this place n they're like o so ur also delusional
he honestly gets a cybermod for literally anyth ( could also b purely for aesthetic purposes honestly ) so anyone workin @ the circle installation centre and apollo medical see u for the monday am appt
he's currently staying at la mariposa ( yeah he was cut off from his fam but this is j proof of privilege 🤡 aka bein his father's son has helped him start off w a large capital to get his hands into a lot of diff businesses which are all now paying off n funding his time @ ansan )
i can also imagine hansol may not be So forthcoming ab him being from astra espc when he finds out ab some of the anti-astra sentiment so idk it would b cool if he kinda lied ab his identity to u n u bought into it n he's literally not at all the person u became friends w ( or even started dating 👀 )
alternatively if ur a diehard fan of astra he will use his birthright as an advantage : )) or if uve been to / are from astra mayb!!! yall could've known each other somehow!!
someone he's pissed off or wronged n mayb now it's comin back 2 bite him in the ass!!!
catch him at orbital sometimes bc old habits die hard
even someone workin at or used to work at cynet?? like the ansan branch or smth!! i feel like ur muse would know him bc he's part of the jin family n ngl once he finds out he's immediately gna start treatin ur muse as like an assistant or smth......... .. .. .... .... orrr mayb he will ask u for info on how daddi-o's doin idk lots of room 4 brainstormin!!
a bunch of his body mods r to make him a good poker player which is rlly handy in business bc he can usually tell when someone's lying!! maybe ur muse is tryna lie to him ab smth n hes like 🧐

so uh... take 20 🤡 hi guys it’s gemma ( s/h, 21+ ) bringing u mr anger management issues, park jaehyun! he’s a pretty old, heavily recycled muse of mine so some of you prob recognise him by now, but his roots are from a mutant rp from ages ago so i’m rlly glad it’s come full circle! anw he’s basically a bit of a criminal, constantly in and out of the correctional facility and one thing ab him is he’s gna hate aeternals w a Passion 🤙 under the cut is a not really tl;dr cause his bio is too stinkin long, but as alw, please LIKE this post to plot! thx fam ♡
born to aeternal parents! mom had superstrength like him and dad had some psionic power but they d*ed when he was p young so honestly he doesn’t know much ab them
anw he was a really difficult kid 👅 he’s always had this v destructive rage n coupled w his strength, it made it really hard for anyone other than his mom to handle and raise him which was obv limited bc she was busy w work
not to mention both his parents d*e when he’s ~4 when they’re off on aeternal duty and he basically gets promised a bunch of shit bc it made the people up there feel a lil better ab themselves ( spoiler alert: it’s all a load of bull espc when they find out he requires more attn than usual )
when they decide they’ve done enough for the guilt to subside, they send him off to live w his maternal grandmother in the jeong district who has superstrength too! she’s got a speech disability but even besides that she doesn’t rlly communicate w him much so it’s a huge contrast to how he was raised, espc since he alw found his mom’s voice v soothing 😩 she loves him a lot but she’s also old, tired, n did not sign up to raise a kid so whenever he misbehaves she j smacks him w a slipper n tells him like... stop tf lol
so yeah he gets a little out of hand... jaehyun feels a lot of entitlement and it comes from what he perceives as being robbed by life!! like before his parents kicked the bucket he was on track yknow, had great, respectable parents who raised him the way he needed to be, lived in aeternity homes up in posh elysium hill, people prob cooed at him as a kid n one day he’s tossed to the jeong district n people r lookin at the kid like he’s a dirty thieving rat and on top of that, the authorities assure him it’s fine, he’ll be taken care of, everything’s going to be ok then peaced out so yeah he’s gonna feel a lil angry
so anw this entitlement led to him stealing a Lot and there’s two npcs ( aeternity mako and aeternity tekki ) who are alw on his case!!! aeternal mako knew his parents so he’s a lil softer on jaehyun, kinda reprimands him when he’s caught stealing but doesn’t rlly lodge much of a report, but aeternal tekki is a bit weirder n likes to pick on kids bc he's got nothing better to do w his life and is a loser
jae’s 17 when he gets locked up and it’s bc he stole aeternal tekki’s car cause fuck that guy : ) aeternal mako’s retired by this point so jae gets no mercy in aeternal tekki’s hands and he’s sent to the correctional facility for a year
comes out and realises how much harder life can be now that he’s got mark on his record : ( to his credit, he manages to get a job in the junkyard and works for his grandma’s bakery ( this one is more like a favour, he doesn’t accept anyth she pays him ) and eventually finds out ab daemon’s underground fighting ring! alm kills a guy on his first day but he’s so strong the people love him so they pay him big bucks to come back
but yeah the younger sib of the fighter he nearly kills finds him and tries to beat him up in his rage n sorrow n jae isn’t careful enough w his strength, so he accidentally hurts the kid while defending himself and gets caught on one count of assault + using his unlicensed powers ( wild considering he can’t turn it off n it literally is part of him but anw ) n gets sent back to the correctional facility for 3y, considering his prev record
when he comes out he finds out a lot of shit has changed in 3y, his grandma had to sell her bakery bc her competitor was spreading rumours that her grandson was out here beating up kids do yall rlly wanna support a bakery that supports that wack so her business dwindled n she needs to sell the bakery or it’ll put her in debt : ) jae feels hella guilty for being the cause of it n for not being there when it mattered, so he tries to teach em a lesson and pummels the ground until there’s a lil earthquake n the bakery’s levelled
so yea h he’s back in the correctional facility for 6y and is prob threatened w banishment if he ever fucks up again!! not in the bio but his grandma had a stroke while he was in the correctional facility so now he’s trying to be on his best behaviour bc he doesn’t wanna be banished from eden and not be there to care for her....... yeah </3
present day he’s a junkyard worker still since they’re basically the only ones who’ll give him work!! he also fights in daemon and he’s actly rlly good bc of his strength, so he’s paid rlly well there but it’s mostly going to his grandma’s hospital bills ♡
in terms of personality i would say jae has rlly poor impulse control and it does not take even the daftest person v long to realise he’s got some anger issues..... maybe it’s the way he speaks like he’s spitting or the way he says fuck like every sentence,, or it’s def his reputation if ur muse knows of it
jae is rlly in his mind his business era but if u piss him off he will have a personal vendetta against u... like honestly a lot of the shit he does is not so much j reactive but it’s bordering on j... unnecessary? like he did not need to go n make an earthquake j cause they spread some rumours n he did not need to be stealing cars j bc the person who owns it looked at him the wrong way so yeah he’s a bit of a drama king
he’s also sorta egotistical, cannot be held accountable for anyth ever so yeah he’s a real hit w the ladies bc let’s not pretend we don’t know it’s the toxic men that have our queens in a chokehold
i realised i haven’t said a single pro so uhm... he’s a family guy, rlly into the found family aesthetic too n u know criminals do those best ♡ their kinship is unmatched nth brings people together better than being on the run
aight anw here’s some plots!!
gets in trouble w the law r e g u l a r l y so uhm aeternals wya!! u don’t even gotta be dealing w him specifically like he will give u the stink eye for even existing in his general space </3 ik his parents were aeternals but trust me the logic checks out
honestly jae knows abysmally little ab his parents but it’d be cool to see an aeternal or j someone else who sorta,, knows more ab them?? it could move into a sorta confidant relo where he hears all ab his parents from ur muse ( sorta the wow u are so much like ur mom and jae doesn’t react but deep down he’s crying bc he alw saw his parents as angels n he clearly is uhm... not ) or it could turn sorta nasty ( like u r their kid? how did u go so wrong tf ) j anyth rlly!!
he works in a junkyard so who needs scraps, he’s ya man!!
also brings some salvageable parts over to spark repairs too!! he’s a huge car dude and he doesn’t rlly know enough to be a mechanic but he’s honestly keen to learn, even considering swapping his junkyard job to b a mechanic so!! anw who works there pls take him under ur wing ty
he’s also a daemon fighter so imma need all the daemon fighters to line up under this post so they can measure dick sizes who’s winnin, who’s losin, who’s teamed up n who’s sworn enemies get in line
he’s spent a total of 10y in the correctional facility so he prob would’ve met anyone who’s been locked up too!! i imagine jae was sorta minding his business but i can def see him being part of a clique ( yknow how prisons have those ) so yeah!! was ur muse part of his or against?? or j a nomad??
speaking of correctional facility, he prob also spent a lot of time in community service @ butterfly island so!!! anyone who has any business there hmu!!
i’d love to see some childhood friends from elysium hill, like maybe both ur parents were aeternals or smth n u guys were besties n now ur life trajectory is so diff... it’d be cool to explore this contrast!!
alternatively would love to see high sch friends from the jeong district!! jae is rlly extroverted and he was those kids who bullies other kids into letting him copy their hw, blatantly disrespects the teacher n is havin a nine course feast at the back of the class, skips sch regularly ( he could even have convinced ur muse to skip class back in the day teehee )
i’d also love to see someone who cared for jae’s grandma when he was alw away @ the correctional facility!! maybe yall met when she was still running her bakery n shit but i thought it’d be a really cute connection to have!!
last but not least i have implied that jae has that community dick so yeah uhm... if yall need a toxic ex to jumpstart ur glow up or u j need someone to scratch that itch, everyone knows the broker the boy the better the d—
this is rlly long bc i lack the ability 2 b concise, but if u see this, ty 4 making it all the way here!! pls hmu to plot im so keen!! ♡

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES
📅 TUES. 16TH APRIL 2024
        POWER TO HEAL
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
And these signs shall follow them that believe... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover (Mark 16:17- 18).
Pastor Chris Says
━━━━━━━━━━
Do you know that when it comes to healing the sick, we're the ones God asked to do it? He gave us power to heal. In our theme scripture, the Lord Jesus didn't say the believing ones shall pray to me to heal the sick; rather, He said, they shall lay hands on the sick, and the sick shall be healed.
Then in Luke 10:9, He was just as direct when He sent His disciples out to preach the Gospel. He said, "... heal the sick...and say unto them, the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you." Also, He told them, "And as ye go, preach, saying, the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give" (Matthew 10:7-8).
Remarkably, He didn't say, "pray for the sick"; rather, He said, "heal the sick." Hallelujah! In Acts 3, Peter exemplified this authority to heal the sick when he encountered a man who had been crippled from birth at the Temple gate. He declared, "...Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk" (Acts 3:6). This wasn't a plea or a prayer, Peter simply acted on the Words of the Master, He used the Name of Jesus as a powerful instrument.
In Acts 3:16, he further emphasized the power of the Name of Jesus when he said that faith in His Name had made the formerly lame man strong: "And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all."
One of the most beautiful things about Christianity is the blessing of using the Name of Jesus. When you speak or proclaim healing for the sick in His Name, your words are effective, producing exactly what they talk about. Even now, go ahead and make declarations in His Name about your health and that of your loved ones. Proclaim healing for many today who are sick and in hospitals. Hallelujah!
          🙏 P R A Y E R
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Dear Father, thank you for granting me the power of attorney to use the Name of Jesus and bring healing and health to the sick. Even now, I proclaim healing for many today who are in hospitals and might have been given up to die; the handwriting of death concerning them is cancelled, and they're restored to sound health, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
      📖 FURTHER STUDY:
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Luke 9:2;  And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
Acts 3:1-8;  Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.
[2] And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple;
[3] who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms.
[4] And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us.
[5] And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.
[6] Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
[7] And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
[8] And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
Philippians 2:9-11;  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
[10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
[11] and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory

Reading 1
_________
Acts 3:1-10
Peter and John were going up to the temple area
for the three o’clock hour of prayer.
And a man crippled from birth was carried
and placed at the gate of the temple called “the Beautiful Gate” every day
to beg for alms from the people who entered the temple.
When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple,
he asked for alms.
But Peter looked intently at him, as did John,
and said, “Look at us.”
He paid attention to them, expecting to receive something from them.
Peter said, “I have neither silver nor gold,
but what I do have I give you:
in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, rise and walk.”
Then Peter took him by the right hand and raised him up,
and immediately his feet and ankles grew strong.
He leaped up, stood, and walked around,
and went into the temple with them,
walking and jumping and praising God.
When all the people saw him walking and praising God,
they recognized him as the one
who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the temple,
and they were filled with amazement and astonishment
at what had happened to him.

Christians, to the Paschal Victim
Offer your thankful praises!
A Lamb the sheep redeems;
Christ, who only is sinless,
Reconciles sinners to the Father.
Death and life have contended in that combat stupendous:
The Prince of life, who died, reigns immortal.
Speak, Mary, declaring
What you saw, wayfaring.
“The tomb of Christ, who is living,
The glory of Jesus’ resurrection;
bright angels attesting,
The shroud and napkin resting.
Yes, Christ my hope is arisen;
to Galilee he goes before you.”
Christ indeed from death is risen, our new life obtaining.
Have mercy, victor King, ever reigning!

Gospel
__________
Lk 24:13-35
That very day, the first day of the week,
two of Jesus’ disciples were going
to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus,
and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.
And it happened that while they were conversing and debating,
Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,
but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
He asked them,
“What are you discussing as you walk along?”
They stopped, looking downcast.
One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply,
“Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem
who does not know of the things
that have taken place there in these days?”
And he replied to them, “What sort of things?”
They said to him,
“The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene,
who was a prophet mighty in deed and word
before God and all the people,
how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over
to a sentence of death and crucified him.
But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel;
and besides all this,
it is now the third day since this took place.
Some women from our group, however, have astounded us:
they were at the tomb early in the morning
and did not find his Body;
they came back and reported
that they had indeed seen a vision of angels
who announced that he was alive.
Then some of those with us went to the tomb
and found things just as the women had described,
but him they did not see.”
And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are!
How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things
and enter into his glory?”
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets,
he interpreted to them what referred to him
in all the Scriptures.
As they approached the village to which they were going,
he gave the impression that he was going on farther.
But they urged him, “Stay with us,
for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.”
So he went in to stay with them.
And it happened that, while he was with them at table,
he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and gave it to them.
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,
but he vanished from their sight.
Then they said to each other,
“Were not our hearts burning within us
while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?”
So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem
where they found gathered together
the Eleven and those with them who were saying,
“The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!”
Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way
and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
***
FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD
"Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?"
Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
I grew up virulently anti-Catholic. It wasn’t that we hated individual Catholics. I was taught never to treat anyone poorly, even if they were one of those Biblically illiterate Catholics. Anti-Catholicism was simply in the water we drank.
I did not realize it until later that I was also raised in a debating society. My dad never said a word. How could he? My mom sucked all of the air out of the room. She even debated television shows and movies. I caught the bug honestly. By high school I was debating Catholics.
A funny thing happened after graduate school, serving many years as a minister, and raising a family: I became less and less convinced by words. Sure, I made a living from reading, analyzing, interpreting, and then speaking words. I was all about words. Sometimes those words had power. Sometimes they caused people’s hearts to burn. But too often those words simply fell to the ground with no impact whatsoever. I never could quite understand why.
Then I met two people who changed my life. I did not actually personally meet them, mind you, but I felt the power of their words. Mother Teresa actually said very little, yet there was obvious power in her words. Why? When she spoke, things happened. I also remember being introduced to another person with those famous words, “Habemus papam.” He actually spoke a lot of words but it was the impact of his travels and the way he treated people that made me think that there was a lot more to life than words.
This really should not surprise us when we read about those earliest disciples. They were just like Jesus. Jesus spoke with authority, meaning that things actually happened when he spoke. Peter and John told a man who had been crippled from birth to rise and walk. What a shock it must have been to the people around him to see the man “walking and jumping and praising God.” I remember a commercial from many years ago. “When E.F. Hutton speaks, people listen.” Peter and John were the E.F. Huttons of the early church. When they spoke, not only did people listen, but you just knew that something was going to happen.
After spending thirty years as a minister, I have preached a lot of sermons. Now that I have been Catholic for ten years, I have heard a lot of homilies. My friends have asked me to compare the preaching of my sermons with those homilies. I do not do this for one simple reason: it is impossible to compare them. In the former setting you have powerful sermons and sometimes it causes hearts to burn. But where is Jesus? In the latter, whether or not your heart burns from the homily, Jesus is known in the breaking of the bread. Would I like to hear better homilies? Yes. But I cannot imagine giving up the risen Jesus for a better homily. The homily is not the only words spoken in the Mass. We also hear: “This is my body” and “This is my blood.” Whether or not the homily causes our hearts to burn, when those words of institution are spoken, things happen. Oh to have eyes to recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread!

SAINT OF THE DAY
Saint Benedict
(1526 – 1589)
Saint Benedict the African’s Story
Benedict held important posts in the Franciscan Order and gracefully adjusted to other work when his terms of office were up.
His parents were slaves brought from Africa to Messina, Sicily. Freed at 18, Benedict did farm work for a wage and soon saved enough to buy a pair of oxen. He was very proud of those animals. In time, he joined a group of hermits around Palermo and was eventually recognized as their leader. Because these hermits followed the Rule of Saint Francis, Pope Pius IV ordered them to join the First Order.
Benedict was eventually novice master and then guardian of the friars in Palermo—positions rarely held in those days by a brother. In fact, Benedict was forced to accept his election as guardian. And when his term ended, he happily returned to his work in the friary kitchen.
Benedict corrected the friars with humility and charity. Once he corrected a novice and assigned him a penance only to learn that the novice was not the guilty party. Benedict immediately knelt down before the novice and asked his pardon.
In later life, Benedict was not possessive of the few things he used. He never referred to them as “mine,” but always called them “ours.” His gifts for prayer and the guidance of souls earned him throughout Sicily a reputation for holiness. Following the example of Saint Francis, Benedict kept seven 40-day fasts throughout the year; he also slept only a few hours each night.
After Benedict’s death, King Philip III of Spain paid for a special tomb for this holy friar. Canonized in 1807, he is honored as a patron saint by African Americans.  The liturgical feast of Saint Benedict the African is celebrated on April 4.
Reflection
_________
Among Franciscans, a position of leadership is limited in time. When the time expires, former leaders sometimes have trouble adjusting to their new position. The Church needs men and women ready to put their best energies into leadership—but also men and women who are gracefully willing to go on to other work when their time of leadership is over.
Saint Benedict the African is a Patron Saint of:
African Americans

14th February >> Mass Readings (USA)
Ash Wednesday
(Liturgical Colour: Violet: B (2))
First Reading Joel 2:12-18 Rend your hearts, not your garments.
Even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment. Perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing, Offerings and libations for the LORD, your God.
Blow the trumpet in Zion! proclaim a fast, call an assembly; Gather the people, notify the congregation; Assemble the elders, gather the children and the infants at the breast; Let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber. Between the porch and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep, And say, “Spare, O LORD, your people, and make not your heritage a reproach, with the nations ruling over them! Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”
Then the LORD was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 51:3-4, 5-6ab, 12-13, 14 and 17
R/ Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.
Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness; in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense. Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me.
R/ Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.
For I acknowledge my offense, and my sin is before me always: “Against you only have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight.”
R/ Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.
A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. Cast me not out from your presence, and your Holy Spirit take not from me.
R/ Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.
Give me back the joy of your salvation, and a willing spirit sustain in me. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.
R/ Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.
Second Reading 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2 Be reconciled to God. Behold, now is the acceptable time.
Brothers and sisters: We are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him. Working together, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says:
In an acceptable time I heard you, and on the day of salvation I helped you.
Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Gospel Acclamation cf. Psalm 95:8
If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Gospel Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18 Your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
Jesus said to his disciples: “Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. “When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

hi nikki!!! i vanished again for a rly long time cuz its rly busy and crunch season for me in uni rn :/ how have you been!! hope youve gotten better since the last time we talked :")
i had 4 assessments last week like one on wednesday and THREE on friday it rly felt like acads was sucking the life out of me >< i hope you dont mind me ranting a little but this sem has rly been by far the worst semester in my uni life like ive been tryna stay all positive and focus on the good things that happened but fr NOTHING good has been happening :"( its rly a pain going through all these days and its like the skies r tryna play tricks on me even when it comes to small daily stuff.. like id just be minding my own business and walking somewhere and then someone spills water all over my shoes, or after finally managing to find an empty spot to study at, the charging plug at the table just refuses to work, or the chairs r spoilt and like.... IM SO DONE :"( and it sux even more cuz daylight savings have caused the time difference between me and my boyfie to increase and its alm like we can never find the right pocket of time to communicate anymore and its rly taking a toll on me mentally. sigh... like literally all the stress and discomfort has caused me to lose my appetite and ive lost alm 10kgs in the past 2 months..
i hope after going through all these, things would only be better and would make me happier after a long long time.. and id be able to learn how to express myself and speak my emotions properly again cuz im rly rly emotionally constipated rn.
<3, 🍑
hihihi lil peach!!!
it's okay, i totally understand crunch szn for uni--went through it one too many times. i'm sick yet again (thus the woes of being a kindy teacher, the germs!! it's my 6th time getting sick this school year) but i'm writing again! the inspo finally came back to me <333
i complete empathize w you--sometimes it's really hard to stay positive when all is going to shit. and with people telling you to look on the bright side makes it even harder because you could try and try to no avail. i'm so sorry this is happening to you, whatever you're feeling is so valid. i'm glad you see me as a safe space to come and talk about these things. i hope things begin to look up for you soon and that your 2024 is filled with happier days, good health, and prosperity.
when i feel like this, which is quite often, i turn back to journaling or asking myself these questions (they're questions i've learned as an elementary teacher, trying to understand the feelings of my kiddos):
what am i feeling right now? i use the mood meter (you can look it up on google and they'll be some good ones)
why am i feeling this way? (get down to the root of it) "i am feeling _ because _."
what is one immediate thing i can do to get me out of this mood? is there something physical i can do? an immediate fix? or is there a step i can take?
"next time i feel this way, i can _"
