(Fic under the cut. Warning: Death.)
Hisashi had stopped paying attention to Yoichi after the fifth theory about the protagonist of his favorite comic.
He was sorry, but Yoichi hadn’t stopped talking and talking since they had left school, and Hisashi just couldn’t deal with reminding himself which characters had which powers or what roles had each one: Too much information at once.
Also, it wasn’t like if he had to pay close attention to the rants: They were mostly just Yoichi’s monologues, with the occasional questions, which all could be answered with a simple yes.
“So… What’s your favorite character?”
“Yes.”
Well, maybe that method had some flaws.
Yoichi looked at Hisashi a few seconds, confused.
“There isn’t any character called Yes on Captain Hero.”
Hisashi laughed nervously.
“Oh, you were talking about Captain Hero? I thought you were talking about…” Hisashi tried to think about a random comic. “Yes or No. You know, the comic about…”
“You weren’t paying attention, weren’t you?”
“Sorry.”
Yoichi sighed.
“Well, since now I have your attention, what’s your favorite character on Captain Hero?”
“Uh…” Hisashi scratched his neck, thinking. “The Demon King.”
“The Demon King.” Yoichi repeated slowly.
“Yes.”
“Of all the characters, The Demon King is your favorite.”
Hisashi rolled his eyes and smiled.
“Why do I feel like you’re judging me?”
“I'm not judging you, I’m just asking…” Yoichi took a long pause. “Why?”
“Well, first of all, he has the best fashion sense of all the characters in the whole comic.”
“Ah, yes. Five layers of Victorian clothing. The peak of fashion.” Yoichi said, sarcastically.
“Glad you got it.” Responded Hisashi.
“You have a questionable taste, you know?”
“First, how dare you, I have an implacable taste. Second, any clothes it’s better than wearing a skintight neon blue suit.”
“It’s not all neon blue! Captain's suit also has some black details, and…”
“But the majority is neon blue, so…” Hisashi grinned. “It still counts.”
“You can’t ever be wrong, can you?”
“No, thanks for noticing.”
“Well, apart from the… “Sense of fashion” of the Demon King, why else is he your favorite.”
Hisashi ignored the tone of the question, and answered.
“He’s a thief. And we all know that thieves are the best characters ever, in any media.”
“What?”
“They’re just more relatable.”
Yoichi took a literal (because the traffic light was red) and metaphorical pause.
“Thief characters are more… Relatable?” Said Yoichi, confused.
“Yes, they are.” Affirmed Hisashi, just as one says that the sky is blue, or that leaves are green.
“Care to elaborate?”
“No.”
“Alright. Now, I hope you don’t mind if I hide my stuff from you for the rest of eternity.”
“I guess that’s fair.” Hisashi said, shrugging his shoulders.
"You got any more reasons? Ones that make sense?"
Hisashi chuckled.
"This is starting to look like an interrogation."
"It's not an interrogation! I'm just curious."
"Yeah, sure Yoshi."
"Don't call me Yoshi." Responded Yoichi.
Hisashi ignored Yoichi and answered the original question.
"He's just cool, you know? He is a genius, he's fun to read, he commits atrocities…"
"The fact that he commits atrocities is one of the reasons you like him?" Interrupted Yoichi.
"Yes. As I was saying, he has a cool power, people respect him, he's dramatic…" Hisashi looked at the sky for a few seconds, smiling. " It would be cool to be him, you know?"
"I don't think so."
Two days after that conversation, Hisashi discovered that the holes in his hands weren't just birth deformities.
Three months later, he already had five quirks.
Seven months later, Yoichi started hearing rumors about a quirk thief not much older than him.
A year later, Hisashi already had two allies: One had a light quirk and was perfect at searching down people. The other had a speed quirk and was a good fighter.
A year and two months later, Yoichi started noticing how Hisashi spent less and less time home.
Two years later, Hisashi came home beaten, bloody and with six broken fingers. He also had three more quirks, but nobody knew that part.
Three years later, Yoichi started high school and Hisashi started making quirk exchanges.
Three years and a half later, Hisashi turned seventeen and already had a small legion of followers.
Four years later, the attacks and battles between "supernatural individuals" and "normal individuals" covered every newspaper front page. Hisashi felt a pinch of pride every time one of his attacks appeared.
Four years and a month later, Yoichi started wondering where did Hisashi go when it turned dark.
Four years, one month and a week later, Yoichi followed Hisashi and discovered some things about his brother.
That night, Yoichi didn't sleep.
Five years later, Hisashi moved out of home. Yoichi didn't know if he felt worried or relieved.
Eight years later, Yoichi turned twenty and finally confronted Hisashi. The fight lasted all night long, and it only ended when the sun began to rise.
Eight years and a day later, fourteen people were found dead in an alleyway.
Eight years and two days later, even if Yoichi and Hisashi didn't live on the same house, Yoichi started sleeping with a knife under his pillow.
Eight years and two weeks later, Yoichi woke up in a vault, without any contact to the exterior world.
Nine years later, Yoichi and Hisashi fought once again. This time, the fight lasted three hours, and it ended when Hisashi gave Yoichi a quirk.
And that night, sitting at his desk and looking at nothing in particular, it was the first time Hisashi Shigaraki felt regret.
Ten years later, Yoichi escaped from the vault with the help of some members of the rebellion.
Twelve years later, Yoichi had blood all over his face.
He looked at his brother, kneeled down next to him. It was the first time Yoichi saw tears falling from his brother's eyes.
"Fuck." Repeated Hisashi one and once again." Fuck, I didn't mean to…"
Yoichi coughed. He felt how his vision started to blurry.
"So." Yoichi took his brother's hand. He noticed how it was shaking violently. "Is it really worth it being the Demon King?"
Hisashi laughed, desperately.
“You’re really going to let those be your last words?"
Yoichi nodded.
Twelve years and four seconds later, Yoichi Shigaraki died.
