McDavid vs Mathews; Who Wins the Hart?
With the 2021 NHL season winding to a close, fans are talking about the Hart trophy.
Obviously, Connor McDavid is among the frontrunners as he is every year, but with the career year that Auston Matthews is having leading the league in goals, he simply cannot be left out of the conversation.
The Hart memorial trophy is awarded every year to the player judged most valuable to his team throughout the regular season. Therefore the debate of who is more deserving of this trophy must be centred around which of these two superstars is more valuable to his team.
One factor to take into account is that the two stars play very different roles on their respective teams.
Auston Matthews has proven without a doubt that he is the league’s top goal scorer this season. Currently scoring at a 0.8 goals per game pace and leading the league with an incredible 33 goals in just 41 games, separating himself from the second-place goal scorer Mikko Rantanen by a definitive 7 goals.
Earlier on in the season, Matthews was on pace for 50 goals in 55 games, and most likely would’ve hit that mark if it weren’t for injury.
Matthews however, simply can’t compete with the point-scoring ability of Connor McDavid.
McDavid has consistently scored at well over a point per game pace, with a remarkable league-leading 71 points in 43 games played and is on pace for about 92 points on the year.
So one player is the undisputed goal-scoring king, while the other is one of the most dynamic point-scoring superstars we’ve ever seen. They both boast their own unique weapons, primed and ready to embarrass defencemen and goalies alike. McDavid with his blinding speed, stickhandling and passing ability and Matthews with his deadly wrist shot, herculean one-timer, and natural goal-scoring ability.
So the question has to be, which of these skillsets is more valuable to a team’s success?
Goals win hockey games, but assists are required to create them in the first place. It’s worth noting however that it is much harder to score goals than assists/points in the NHL.
Since 15-16, there have been 70 players in total who have scored more than 80 points in a season. In that same timeframe, only 10 players have scored more than 45 goals in a season.
A player who can amass anywhere near 45 goals in a single season is much rarer than a player that can score over 80 points and is therefore much more valuable to his team. It should also be noted that at a certain point an incredible amount of points can eclipse a stellar goal-scoring performance, or at least equate to it.
While only 10 players have reached the 45+ goal mark in the last 5 seasons, only 12 players have scored 100 points or more since the 15-16 season. With a similar total number of players hitting each mark, we can say that scoring 100 points is roughly around the same rarity as a player scoring 45+ goals in a single season, and the acheivments should be judged accordingly.
Steering the Conversation back to the Hart, by looking at the rarity of goal scoring and comparing it to the amount of points needed to equal certain amounts of goals, it would seem that McDavid and Matthews are quite evenly matched at this point.
With their current paces, Matthews will finish the season with 42 goals in 52 games, while McDavid will finish with 92 points in 55 games played. Translating this to a full 82 game season, a perfectly healthy Matthews would come out with a whopping 66 goals, something that even Alex Ovechkin has never done, and a healthy McDavid would far eclipse the 100 point mark with 135 points, A feat we haven't seen since Mario Lemieux in the 95-96 season.
Taking all of this into account, although 135 points hasn’t been surpassed since the 90’s, It’s been approached numerous times by the likes of Jaromir Jagr, Joe Thornton, Sidney Crosby, Nikita Kucherov, and a few others. 66 goals however, has only really been in grasp once since the 90’s by Alex Oveckin with 65 goals in 07-08
By this logic, the goal scoring pace of Auston Matthews is slightly more rare and impressive than the point scoring performance of McDavid. Therefore, he is more deserving of the Hart memorial trophy this season.
McDavid’s point production is obviously nothing short of amazing, but the raw goal scoring ability of Auston Matthews, this year in particular, is in a league of its own. No one really comes close.
Do you agree with this breakdown? Will these two phenoms meet in the playoffs? What other Oilers deserve to be nominated for individual awards? It’ll all be discussed here next week.
-Dave

Alex Ovechkin has had two hat tricks in just 13 minutes of ice time
What a start to the new season for the Washington Capitals’ star.
Last season, it took 10 games for Alex Ovechkin to net six goals. This year? It took just two games.
On Saturday, Ovechkin posted his second hat trick of the season after potting three goals against the Montreal Canadiens in the opening period of their weekend bout. The goals made up his second straight hat trick, with all six of them coming in his last two periods of play.
Ovechkin’s first hat trick of the year came in the third period of Thursday night’s contest against Ottawa, where the Washington Capitals won in a shootout.
It took 20 seconds for Ovechkin to continue his pace on Saturday, as his first goal of the game in Washington was off a beauty of a spin move to place the puck top corner past Carey Price.
In between Ovechkin’s next goal, T.J. Oshie got in on the party to double the Capitals lead.
Then, it was all the captain’s turn as Oveckin netted his second at 2:51 of the first period.

And finally, Ovechkin’s hat trick came with less than two minutes left to play in the Capitals’ opening frame.

In total, Ovechkin has scored six goals in his last 12 minutes and 13 seconds of ice time. In fact, he is only the fourth player to have back-to-back hat tricks in NHL history. Ovechkin’s on pace for an incredible amount of goals on the season, one that won’t last as his scoring touch returns to a normal pace.
Even so, Ovechkin is off to a blazing start to the 2017-18 NHL season. Whether it’s extra motivation from having to skip the Olympics or a determination to show that the Capitals window isn’t closed just yet, his fire is making the first week of the new season a treat to watch.
