1. valerie and her week of wonders (1970) if you’re a fan of vampires and cottagecore aesthetics, you will adore this film. it’s an extremely thought provoking czech horror film that can be quite confusing and disturbing at times but is overshadowed by beauty through it’s visuals, scenery, set design, wardrobe, peaceful ambience, and of course; the storyline. valerie is one of the most well-written characters i’ve observed, she’s so endearing, curious, and absolutely fearless for such a young woman. and my golly, jaroslava schallerová is an absurdly magnificent actress!! (warning, there’s one short scene that may be triggering for csa survivors)

2. a little princess (1995) based off the most beautiful novel written by frances burnett in 1905, a little princess follows sarah after she goes through the sadness of leaving her beautiful home in india followed by losing her only family, her darling father to world war one. an orphan, she learns to fight back against her headmistress who belittled her and employed her into servitude, keeping her locked in the orphanage attic. she fights to protect her best friend becky as well as the other girls from miss minchen’s abuse and just shows that true compassion, bravery and empathy can be obtained by anyone at any age. my aunt bought me the vhs tape of this when i was five and it very quickly became my all-time favorite movie as a little girl, and the first movie to make me cry. i truly think everyone should watch the little princess in their lifetime, it’s stunning in every way possible and greatly contributed to helping me gain confidence as a child with its beautiful and empowering message towards all women and girls. i won’t spoil the ending, but let me tell you - it’s so heartwarming. do yourself a favor and watch it, it will change your life hehe.

3. some like it hot (1959) if you’re feeling a little down or just want to see something that’ll make you smile, go watch the lovely marilyn monroe in some like it hot. it’s a comedic tale of unlikely friendship and self love. i adore the way the starlet singer known as sugar cane gains empowerment and confidence through the help of encouragement from her friends even through impending heartbreak, it’s so lovely to see that sort of development from a film even from this era. marilyn’s songs featured in the film are so beautiful, the lyrics are sweet and memorable and her voice is obviously divine. it’s just so wholesome and endearing, the quotes are relatable and timeless, and setting of the hotel del coronado is just gorgeous!
there’re so many pieces i adore with strong female leading roles and i would keep adding, but i maxed out my photo limit :’) i hope you have endless fun with your movie marathon my love!! 🦌
