Hi! Thank you for running this blog.
I'm sorry if this sounds dumb, but I'm from Europe and slightly struggling with converting units and mapping the information to what I know.
I keep coming across the statistic that in the best-case scenario, a person with albinism has a vision of 20/200 - that's a prescription of -2.5 or so, right? Can it be mostly mitigated with glasses or contact lenses? Or is the best-case scenario 20/200 vision with the best possible glasses/contact lenses?
Also, do coloured contact lenses help at all with light sensitivity in the eyes?
I recognise that there are other problems with visions related to albinism, like nystagmus. If this is not too much to ask, I'm also curious about nystagmus - is it a constant effect or does it get stronger with e.g. tiredness or focus or lack thereof?
Thank you, and please feel free to delete if this is too nosy.
Hi hi! n.n
You’re not being nosy at all! I honestly didn’t know countries outside the US didn’t use the 20/20 scale, learn something new every day, heh
But yes! The best case scenario without glasses is 20/200, which qualifies as legally blind. With glasses or contacts it can be improved (My corrected vision is 20/180) but it will never be perfect.
I’ve never actually worn coloured contacts—but I do use tinted ones which help block out some (not all, but some) UV rays and actually block out blue light too!
As for nystagmus, it never really goes away. Glasses and contacts (contacts more so) can help with nystagmus, but it never goes away. And you’re right—tiredness, sickness, eye strain and sudden changes in bright lights can cause it to speed up, but it never goes away. Nystagmus doesn’t affect the vision though, contrary to popular belief. I don’t notice my eyes moving faster or even at all because it doesn’t really affect the way I see. All nystagmus is is the weakness of a muscle in the eye which causes it to bounce around a bit ^.^ Another thing that can occur is double vision, which I have. With glasses and contacts it can be corrected, though without it, I see double.
Hope this helps! And I’m glad my blog could help you n-n

What happened last weekend was crazy. I’ve had anons call me all sorts of terrible things and had people in my DMs act tough. If me talking about racism hurts your feelings or makes you uncomfortable, I suggest you stop roaming my blog and nitpicking my words to suit your agenda.
I’m not ‘too young’ to be talking about racism. Not going to ignore racism just because it doesn’t happen to me personally. My albinism doesn’t exclude me from these conversations, my age doesn’t make my opinions less valid than yours and my feelings about who reposts my content should be respected.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fandom needs a proper cleansing and some of you need to address your internal racism, seek clinical help and learn to be respectful when talking to someone in THEIR DMs. You’re not going to waste my internet connection disrespecting me and think I won’t do anything about it. I’m more than willing to post pictures of our conversations on here and tag you in it❤️

Hi! My name is Cay (she/her), I'm the Superstar Diver here.
I'm studying mythology, specifically the Song of Dragons. We found the Cavern of the Gods, and are now working on clearing the rubble to reopen it again.
Really I'm mostly here to be another set of fins for taking jobs.
The other members of L&L are:
Jean-Eric Louvier - the boss, coordinates from the boat. Was a famous adventurer in his prime, but can't dive anymore.
Oceana Louvier - the guide, Jean-Eric's granddaughter. Has been diving these seas her whole life.
Professor Hayako Sakurai - the scientist, helps run the Goldenrod Aquarium. The only person who can decipher the Okeanos Tablets.
GG - the salvager, a famous treasure hunter from Unova. Had been seeking the Pacifica Treasure for years on his own.
Pokémon members of L&L
Snorkel - Boltund, was found shipwrecked on an island. Loves going on boat rides and taking naps.
Shoal - Finizen (Common Pacific variant), is registered to the company but is allowed to roam free. Assists on dives. Likes finding rocks and balls
Glacier - Finizen (Southern Beakless variant), helped us navigate out of the Antarctic icebergs after we saved it from the Iceberg Cavern. Likes sniffing out valuable salvage.
Cove - Finizen (Albino Paldean variant), rescued from a Sharpedo. Has poor eyesight due to his albinism, is good at finding metal and coins.
Frazil - Finizen (Tusked variant), befriended in the Arctic. Maybe used to be human. She likes finding and playing with dolls and humanoid statues.

Hi! I love your blog! If it's okay, I'd like to request a bit of advice.
I have a physical disability (born legally blind due to albinism). I had spent a lot of time "masking" my blindness since I was 8 or so. I stopped using my cane in public, only used a screen reader when I had  earbuds, read braille in private, etc. I suppose in retrospect it was me trying to play into respectability politics, so I would stop getting the "how many fingers?" routine. It feels even more reinforced that the field I'm studying is considered too dangerous for someone with low vision.
As an adult, I want to let go of that shame and integrate properly with this incredible community. Yet, I feel like a fraud just by interacting. I know that my disability affects me in a multitude of ways that makes me qualified to be here, but I struggle to shake the feeling that others have it worse than me. I am privileged enough to be able to mask myself at all. Short version is: how do I know that I'm enough to be here? If I am enough, how can I get over this imposter syndrome and support my fellow disabled people?
Thank you for reading this, regardless of if you respond or not. Sincerely, I hope you have a good day! :D
First off, I invite any of my followers to comment or reblog this with their own input, especially those who are blind or low vision, since I am not. But I will do my best to answer based on what I know and believe, and what has helped me with my own imposter syndrome.
While it is obviously a privilege to be able to pass as abled, anyone with an invisible disability will tell you that it is sometimes as much a curse as it is a blessing. I'd be willing to bet you could think of some examples from your life that exemplify that too.
In fact, I'd go as far as to say that not being able to mask is also a privilege in some contexts. Being so visibly disabled that society no longer expects you to pretend like you are abled is a privilege, and not one that you enjoy, by the sound of it.
And that's the thing about privilege; too often, I think it's easy to get caught up in conversations about privileged groups and start to think that those are groups of people: the privileged and the not privileged. But it doesn't work like that. Literally every person on the planet is part of at least one privileged group and not part of at least one other privileged group.
You asked if you were enough to be "here," but where is "here"? I think defining that might help you zero in on exactly what arguments you are compiling against yourself, and more easily allow you to counter them.
For example, is "here" the disabled community? If so, I think it would be useful to remind yourself that everyone is part of some privileged groups and not part of others. Do others have it worse than you in some ways? Absolutely. But they might also have advantages that you do not enjoy. At the end of the day, the community isn't so much a place you need to earn a spot in as it is a collaborative effort to pool resources and find solace in the fact that we are not alone in our struggles.

First off nice to meet you! Hi new mutual 👋 Your wips sound awesome and I'll definitely be tagging you in some games because I'd love to learn more about them :D
I see you're open to beta and sensitivity reads! I'm not quite ready for that yet but the second book in my paranormal fantasy duology has a recurring role that's actually a vampire who's visually impaired with albinism! (and queer but that's not explicitly stated or relevant)
I did some research and tried to avoid harmful stereotypes as much as possible, but I was wondering if you had any quick pointers of what I should absolutely avoid? Or vice versa, something you'd really like to see.
Hello, hi! I really enjoyed what I saw on your blog when I first rejoined the tumblr writing community. I’m excited to see more of your work.
First of all, thank you for asking! And thank you also for researching albinism and the harmful stereotypes we unfortunately encounter in media. If I can help bring about more positive, realistic representation of albinism and the spectrum of visual impairment in fiction by acting as a source of advice— well, honestly, I’ve been waiting for someone to ask me this since I started writing. Maybe even before that, really. My childhood was marred by not-great fictional examples of my disability, and those few that exist were used by others as faulty measurements of comparison. Baby Luna would've loved to see someone like herself in books and films who wasn’t a villain or a sympathy-inducer in one of those “disability inspiration” movies.
Speaking of, this brings me to my list of what I’d like to see— and not ever see again— in media. This list’s advice may or may not be relevant, depending on the vampire lore you’re using and the specifics of your— for lack of a better phrase—mythical humanoid world-building. If you'd prefer to share specific bits of relevant info privately— just in case my notes here aren't helpful or specific enough— please feel welcome to pop by in my private messages.
1. Demon comparisons are not well received by the albinism community. I’d love less “omg, red eyes? must be a demon!” energy aimed at us. If that’s a vampire trait in your story’s world, or otherwise plot-necessary, I'd probably support it if the character with albinism bites back with some sass or a teasing threat. The amount of times I’ve had religious weirdos and children freak out on me in public is in the double digits. I'm known to be pretty feisty in response to negative comments, and most of the people with albinism I've met either react with tolerant “in good faith” education or dry humor.
2. Albinism comes with some co-morbid conditions. For example, nystagmus— a condition many people with albinism possess— is rarely represented in media, and therefore not understood by the general population. I’d love to see it casually touched upon in a book or film. Some other related conditions and experiences include extreme photophobia, skin cancer, strabismus, poor vision, astigmatism, squinting, eye fatigue and migraines, and more I'm probably forgetting to mention.
3. Please, please, if you can help it, don't give the world another villain or evil henchman with albinism. I'm begging writers and filmmakers to stop. I can go into detail as to why this is detrimental to the albinism community if requested, but I'm trying to keep this post brief.
4. Not all blind people wear sunglasses, and those who do don't wear them 24/7. I personally only wear mine outside and if I've been under fluorescent lights for more than a few hours. Bright lights physically hurt after awhile. The whole “blind people always wear sunglasses” trope was popularized so that blind characters could be easily recognized as blind in tv and film.
5. We’re clumsy and confused a good portion of the time. Visual impairments plus possible depth perception issues and questionable ability to perceive light do not make for the most graceful of humans. We bump into stationary objects, stumble over uneven or unpredictable surfaces, fail to notice people right in front of us, and fumble with items we can't perceive. If I had a dollar for every time I've taken a doorknob into the hip, knocked over clear glasses, fallen into the street from the pavement, walked by my own mother in a store whilst searching for her, and almost gotten into the wrong car… I'd be able to actually afford to exist under capitalism, wow
I'm sure I'm forgetting some points, but alas my brain is mush and I've made you wait for my response to this question for much too long. Again, thank you for this considerate message and for taking the time to inquire about this topic. I really do appreciate the effort you've put into it. I'm always here to discuss disability, writing, and the intersection thereof.

Rarebloods/Cusps In My Lore
Rarebloods are Trolls who have differing tints and shades of an existing caste on the Hemospectrum. Collectively on in the FTC they are called “cusps,” however in my lore “cusp” is considered a debated slur/take back word similarly to the human equivalent of the controversy surrounding the word “queer.” Rarebloods are not considered Mutants, though often are mistaken as one.
In my lore, Rarebloods are… well… considered to be rare. They don’t hatch very often; those who do are usually mistaken as mutants and culled. Additionally, Rarebloods often have below-average fertility rates, so even though it is not impossible for a Rareblood to have a descendant, it is highly unlikely! Rarebloods who were not culled in the caverns and live freely experience much of the same luxuries and rights as normal blood castes, though are often discriminated against or denied some privileges on a day-to-day basis depending on the service being provided and its servicer. Additionally, many known Rarebloods are actively hunted down for sport or use, due to their blood color being very pretty and thus very valuable to bounty hunters, artists, and collectors.
The difference between Rarebloods and Mutants relies on their inheritance. Mutants tend to be born with genetic damages, which may turn their blood to a bright “candy” color, or born with extra appendages such as extra arms, limbs, eyes, tails, fins, etc. that are abnormal to the closest caste they represent. In Rarebloods however, these mutations are absent; Rarebloods are a result of true cross-inheritance, taking traits from both parents and combining it into one Troll instead of the two grubs that closely resemble one respective ancestor each (as I headcanon troll reproduction to be).
Typically in Rarebloods, one parent influences the color while the other parent influences the hue. Horn designs can also be inherited or mixed between the two parents. Psionics can be inherited by either parent but in my lore psionic genes and their expressions are more recessive meaning while the genetic disposition is present the resulting grub may or may not have any powers.
Thanks to @contrastparadoxx, recent development and idea bouncing has been able to organize the concept of Rarebloods a bit better by coming up with subcategories.
Pastelbloods
These blood colors are very light and pale in comparison to most hues, and trolls who are considered Pastelbloods might be associated, but not always, with albinism or leucism.
Pastelbloods on my blog: Athens, Adrian, Virtuoso
Cuspbloods / Betweenbloods
These are the ones that everyone is most familiar with in the FTC. They are trolls whose blood color is a hue between two or more distinguished castes on the Hemospectrum.
Shadebloods
These blood colors are the opposite of Pastelbloods, in which their color is very very dark in comparison to most hues. Shadebloods might be associated, but not always, with melanism.
Are the Fauruxes Rarebloods?
No. The Fauruxes have always been considered mutants, but just as there are subclasses of Rarebloods there may be subclasses of Mutantbloods as well. What makes them a mutant is their blood-based psionics, instead of mental-based. A mutation has allowed for chemical compounds to be created in their blood that helps control and produce fire.
Rarebloods do not distinctly have Mutations, thus they are considered "safe" and "on the spectrum." Though, even if you are *technically* a Rareblood, if you have something abnormal to your caste then you are ultimately labelled as a "mutant." Remember, Rarebloods are "on the spectrum," Mutants are not.
But as always, labels are societal constructs and people cannot be fit neatly into boxes. What is one's Rareblood might be someone else's Mutantblood, and vice versa, regardless of the Troll's genetics involved.
If you have any questions or ideas feel free to DM me or send me an ask.

random fun facts about my characters:
Alois surname is Leblanc due to a strong gene in his family which often causes albinism. Alois, his older sister Yvonne and one of his older brothers are all albino like their mother (mother's family was insistent that the father took her maiden name for this reason). The gene comes from an ancestor who was born a vampire (where genetics are stronger than those who are turned or are human).
Nasana came from an anonymous drabble that I left on a monster lover blog! The idea continued to go around in my head until I had eventually turned him into a character.
Takeshi is inspired by Tomoe from Kamisama Kiss! I wanted to make a kitsune/nogitsune oc really bad lol and I had a friend (you've seen her over this blog enough to guess who hehe) help me with the research into the mythology!
Desdemona's name ideas were originally narrowed down to Desdemona, Adrienne or Kali and I left the final choice down to another friend (who I call my wife lol) who picked her name!
Aphaeleon's MBTI type is based on angel numbers! I had my (wife) friend pick a number from 1 to 16 for his personality type and she went for 11, the angel number, which lined up to ESTJ on the 16 personalities diagram of the types.

tw bullying mention of traumatic experiences
hi! i've noticed one of your anon pointed out her albinism (?) and i want to talk about it if you're comfortable doing so!
i'm a 22 albino woman, i've spent my whole life fighting people and their nasty theories about my disease, the way they look at me with pure disgust, being bullied for a long time during school "you're a demon" "your mom should've burned you as an infant" just religious people and their terrific way of thinking (and i'm also flat and all bones but that's one of the consequences of the disease that i personally have, so the bullying from men was always there)
i know that my condition is not common, we don't have much representation on social media but it's fine for me, i'm different, i will never fit and i've learn my lesson a long time ago, when this girl tried to burn my hair saying that i should be grateful to be alive in a world not meant for me
the tlou fandom is so welcoming! no one knows that i'm albino tho, i'm not comfortable saying it to people around internet, but it's also true that i've never seen someone writing for us so i understand the frustration but at the same time.... it's okay! i love reading fics, all of them, even if they're not written for me(?) i usually don't feel excluded 'cause writers always write for people without making difference, they're so sweet and caring <3 even if there's no specific!reader it's fine i will support y'all forever no matter what 🤍 all the fics should be for anyone regardless of anything 🫂
hope you'll have a wonderful day/night, no one should make others feel uncomfortable i'm sorry if some people were rude, rude people will never be satisfied with themselves if they bring others down, you deserve a lot of happiness!
and i'm sorry if there's any mistakes/bad eng in my rant! unfortunately i'm still trying to learn english in the best i can i swear ❤️‍🩹
thank you so much for sharing this with me and by proxy sharing it with the rest of my blog. see, hearing stuff like this makes me so upset because this is when inclusivity and being included is important. as i've said i can't write things i haven't experienced, i would never want to make a caricature out of something i know nothing about and write an experience i'm not able to share.
this is also why i feel like we really need more writers who can write about their experiences in ways that it can help others cope. i am so glad you feel welcomed to the tlou fandom and i hope that everyone continues to make an environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and appreciated.
again, thank you for sharing this with me and know that i love u wherever u are and whoever u are <3

I would highly suggest you look into stereotypes like the magic albino and make sure you aren't hurtling towards it. Having albino rep is great and you can have characters who are albino and have magic, if you portray them correctly. But having a character be albino specifically because they have some magic power and their albinism is a byproduct/physical representation of that? Not great. I'd also be wary of associating goodness with whiteness and evil with darkness. In general, you should really look at the Writing with Color tumblr blog and checking out their resources and posts about albinism and color symbolism.
Oh yeah, for sure. As I said, I haven't put too much thought on this yet, so I definitively would need a lot more research before actually deciding. I am vaguely aware of the magic albino character stereotype which is why this is very much a tentative maybe for me.
I do want to say, though. That if Orion were to be Albino, this would have 0 relation to the fact he was blessed for Father Time. I did mention that I was toying with Orion having white hair if he is customizable, but by white hair I don't mean "anime white" more "gone white with age" sort of hair but even that isn't set. So far, none of the blessings have any physical characteristics, and the only reason I would add this to customizable Orion is to make coding easier.
An Orion with albinism would have been albino before he got his blessing and didn't receive his blessing due to it. The two factors would be unrelated. Still, I would need to do more research before I decide it.
And I probably check myself on the dark/white dichotomy too, because the whole basis of the blessings in Off Script is to try to subvert those tropes so if ended up reinforcing them somewhere else it would be a moot point. I tried to make it obvious with the whole "Carmen's and the Villain's Blessings are basically the same just look differently" kind of thing, but I can see where you are coming from.
Actually, I can definitively see how it would be a bad place to reinforce things since it would imply that the white/black dichotomy took place in the original video game since Orion helped defeat the Villain.

There's a rare genetic disorder known as Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome that affects fewer than 1 in 500,000 people worldwide. This syndrome, characterized by albinism, bleeding disorders, and lung fibrosis among other symptoms, can lead to serious health complications. Fortunately, advances in medical research have shown that cord blood banking may offer potential solutions for individuals with this condition. Cord blood, rich in stem cells, can be used in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to potentially treat the symptoms of Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome and improve the quality of life for those affected. In this blog post, we will explore what Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome is, how it affects individuals, and how cord blood banking can play a role in providing hope for those living with this rare genetic disorder.
Understanding Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome
Genetic and Biological Basis of HPSOn a genetic level, Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that affects lysosome-related organelles such as melanosomes, platelet dense granules, and alveolar lamellar bodies. Mutations in at least 10 different genes have been associated with various types of HPS, leading to defects in the biogenesis of these organelles and causing symptoms related to pigmentation, bleeding, and lung function.Symptoms and Diagnostic CriteriaSyndrome characterized by oculocutaneous albinism, bleeding diathesis, and pulmonary fibrosis are the hallmarks of Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome. Other common symptoms include easy bruising, prolonged bleeding after injury, and shortness of breath due to lung complications. Diagnosis usually involves a combination of clinical evaluation, genetic testing, and specialized laboratory tests to assess platelet function and determine the specific genetic mutation present.Associated Health ComplicationsGenetic mutations underlying Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome can also lead to other significant health complications beyond the primary symptoms. These may include gastrointestinal issues such as inflammatory bowel disease, kidney dysfunction, and heart problems. Regular monitoring and management of these associated complications are crucial for the overall well-being of individuals with HPS.
Cord Blood Banking
The Process of Cord Blood Collection and StorageThe process of collecting and storing cord blood is a simple and non-invasive procedure. Any expecting parent can choose to bank their baby's umbilical cord blood after birth. During the delivery, once the baby is born and the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, the remaining blood in the umbilical cord is collected using a sterile kit provided by the cord blood bank. This blood is then processed, tested, and cryogenically frozen for long-term storage.Potential Benefits and Uses in TreatmentCord blood has the potential to be a valuable resource in treating a variety of diseases and conditions. This stem cell-rich blood can be used in the treatment of blood disorders, immune system conditions, and certain genetic disorders. The stored cord blood can be a lifesaving option for the child it belongs to, as well as their siblings and even unrelated individuals in need of a stem cell transplant. This valuable resource opens up a world of possibilities in the field of regenerative medicine. By banking cord blood, individuals are ensuring that they have access to a rich source of stem cells that can potentially be used in future medical treatments. It provides peace of mind knowing that this unique form of stem cells is readily available if needed for potential therapeutic use.
The Role of Cord Blood in Treating HPS
Stem Cell Transplantation - Hope for HPS PatientsOn the forefront of treatment for Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is stem cell transplantation, offering hope to patients affected by this rare genetic disorder. Cord blood, rich in hematopoietic stem cells, has emerged as a promising source for transplantation in HPS cases, potentially providing a cure or alleviating symptoms associated with the syndrome.Research Progress and Future PossibilitiesPatients with Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) have seen significant advancements in research over recent years, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms of the disorder and paving the way for potential treatment breakthroughs. Ongoing studies explore the role of cord blood in treating HPS through stem cell transplantation, offering new possibilities for improved outcomes and quality of life for affected individuals.Research into Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is continuously evolving, with a focus on understanding the genetic and cellular factors contributing to the condition. By investigating the potential of cord blood for stem cell transplantation, researchers aim to develop targeted therapies that address the root cause of HPS, offering new hope for patients and their families.
To wrap up
Taking this into account, Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by problems with vision, bleeding, and in some cases, lung and bowel diseases. Cord blood banking offers a potential solution by providing a source of stem cells that can be used in treatments such as bone marrow transplants. By storing cord blood from newborns, families affected by Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome can have peace of mind knowing that there may be a valuable resource readily available for future medical interventions. To sum up, cord blood banking offers hope for those affected by rare genetic disorders like Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome, providing a potential lifeline for treatment options in the future.
