“I think I make art for myself, but ultimately I make it for the world.”
Jean-Michel Basquiat, an artist from New York, who was born in 1960, was always confronted with race and racism both on his works and life as a Black American. He was a contemporary of Keith Haring, once involved with Madonna, and used to be a protégé of Andy Warhol. When he began to earn money, he gave it away to his less fortunate friends out of decency and shame. He suffered self-doubts and envied Madonna for how her music reached the masses compared to the art world’s elite that dictated the trend and chose the few. A year Warhol died, his father figure, he was so lost. Only 27 years old, he overdosed in heroin. Since then his artworks have sold like hot pancakes. In 2017, “Untitled,” a depiction of a black skull in red and yellow streams, sold for 110.5 millions of dollars. Even Madonna admitted that it was hard to purchase his artworks now after Basquiat ordered her to give back his paintings he gifted her out of paranoia. Banksy would not exist without him. Albertina Museum in Vienna is dedicating a whole season for him.
