Devil Summoner Akuma Zensho bibliography

By request, here is the Devil Summoner Akuma Zensho (that demon art + profiles CD-ROM) bibliography. It’s totally in Japanese! I believe this was extracted by @pepsimangb many years ago. I have a habit of forgetting where to find this anyway, so it’s a worthy repost.

Sega Saturn: Primero que nada, ¿Podrías por favor decirnos que te hizo decir “Akuma Zensho” estará completo precisamente porque es el Akuma Zensho?

Kazuma Kaneko: Puedo dibujar CGs de personajes bastante grandes en la Mac, pero una vez están en el juego, terminan siendo muy pequeños. Es por ello que hay aspectos como los detalles faciales, accesorios o ropa en los que termino dedicando mucho tiempo, pero son imposibles de reproducir allí. El Akuma Zensho utiliza modelos de alta resolución, así que ahora están vívidamente claros y eso es genial.

SS: Data de demonios, perfiles y recetas de fusiones también están incluidas. Eso si que es detallado.

KK: Es correcto. El encargado de la información de los demonios, Isogai, es el modelo de la T-shirt de detective de Devil Summoner (risas). Así que, en esta oportunidad se hizo cargo de todos los datos sin ayuda. Queríamos escribir aún más, pero el límite de caracteres era bastante estricto. Yo, por mi parte, tenía muchas otras cosas que quería decir, así que estuve muy feliz cuando Softbank reveló la fecha de lanzamiento para los libros de Devil Summoner (risas).

SS: ¿Algún monstruo favorito en esta oportunidad?

KK: Hachiman en Devil Summoner, o debería decir, el Dios único en Megaten. Así que el único Dios es el Dios de los Hebreos y hay una teoría que dice que él fue conocido como Hachiman en Japón. Es por eso que lo interpreté como un gran hombre. Todos se familiarizan con el usual Hachiman, pero en realidad su forma original y quizás la del único Dios! De verdad me gusta ese concepto.

SS: ¿Algo más?

KK: Realmente me metí en la cultura sumeria mientras trabaja en esto, y encontré que en su mitología hay un planeta con una órbita elíptica fuera del sistema solar, número doce o más. Es muy popular entre los ocultistas y se dice que monstruos proceden de allí. Inaruna, quien se aparece en la parte final de Devil Summoner fue inspirado por la diosa sumeria Inanna. Hay muchas diosas madre en todo el mundo, como Ishtar o Kali, pero Inanna se siente como madre de todas ellas. Sin embargo, todos difieren de región en región, y parece que Inanna se convirtió en Ishtar en algún momento. Si lo ponemos de esa manera, se siente como si Sumer es el origen de Dios, así que le presté especial atención. Al principio, en realidad estaba pensando en enfocarme en los tipos fantasma, pero me distraje por la otra mitología a la mitad del camino (risas).

SS: ¿Algún favorito entre los demonios de bajo nivel?

KK: Esos serían Ba y Mothman. En Egipto, el alma es llamada Ba, mientras que a la carne se le llama Ka…

SS: ¿De verdad?

KK: Sí, en el pasado. Bueno, ya ves, Ba se convierte en un ave, el espíritu deja a Ka como una momia detrás, hasta que decida regresar. Esa es la costumbre que condujo a la creación de las momias. Dibujé a Ba teniendo eso en mente, como un ave más bien parecida a un espíritu. Así que mientras juegas y te dicen “Tu eres un Summoner, soy el gran Ba” me terminó gustando (risas). En el caso de Mothman, hay una leyenda urbana acerca del Mothman de ojos rojos que persigue a las personas. También, hay avistamientos de OVNIS cada vez que él se aparece, así que toda clase de rumores comenzaron a surgir, como el que Mothman es un alíen robot o algo parecido entre esas líneas. Él es un tipo tan encantador. Él también chupa la sangre de las personas a las que ataca, pero no existen personas atacadas. Hay, sin embargo, personas que lo han visto atacar a otros. Extraño, ¿no lo crees? (risas) Me encantan los monstruos lindos, así que originalmente pensé que lo haría lindo a él también, similar a Doronpa de Obake no Q-Tarou. De verdad me gusta Q, así que esta ves fue el turno de Doronpa. De verdad quería hacer algo basado en Uko también… También está el Demiurge. Existe este movimiento llamado Gnosticismo, un grupo de sociedad secreta; uno de sus conceptos era que la serpiente que le impartió el conocimiento a Adán y Eva, era de hecho, un ser maravilloso, así que este es un ángel de muy alto rango.

SS: ¿Cómo has dibujado a los monstruos hasta ahora?

KK: Yo soy quien hace los bocetos iniciales, incluyendo el diseño y el color, mientras tres de cuatro personas del staff me ayudan a terminarlos, así que terminamos siendo como Kaneko Kazuma y los Ghostwriters. Últimamente, ellos han estado haciendo todo, las ilustraciones y todo lo demás. Es por ello que este es el nombre original. Todos en el staff son muy talentosos, así que deberían de hacer su debut oficial alguno de estos días. Tengo la intención de ser como Komura Tetsuya (risas).

SS: Como la familia Kaneko…

KK: Cierto, cierto. Ah, suena tan bien. Muchísimas gracias (risas).

Isogai se refiere a isogai Shougo, planificador de sistemas y escritor de escenarios para varios juegos de Megaten (sistemas: SMT: if…, SMT: Devil Summoner; escenarios: Camino de Akira en SMT: if…, Soul Hackers, Nocturne, Strange Journey).

El personaje es Isono Shougo, un policía detective de apodo “T-shirt” por su cariño a las T-shirts, inclusive en el medio del invierno. Su sobrino, Kurori Tsutomu, apodado Akuma-kun, también se basa en Isogai.

Aparentemente los japoneses consideran a Inanna como una diosa madre.

El planeta al que se refiere es probablemente Nibiru.

La explicación de Ba y Ka está verdaderamente simplificada y puede que no sea correcta, y debido a que no somos expertos en la mitología egipcia, aquí la wiki para clarificarlo.

“El gran Ba” es un ore-sama en el original…

This time we have a short Kaneko Kazuma interview on the newly released (back then) Akuma Zensho in the eighth volume of the Sega Saturn Magazine, revealing something totally unexpected about Hachiman, with Mothman being cute and Kaneko’s gang. What do you mean what gang.

Two posts in one month is often a rarity on this blog, let alone two within 24 hours, but while preparing the discs for Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Special Box for upload for the last post, I came across a directory inside the Demon Compendium disc with these seven desktop wallpapers, along with a readme file. Good friend of the blog @eirikrjs has previously uploaded these images before, but I figured a fresh post here would be worthwhile both for posterity and also for properly bundling them with said readme file in one place. (It’s worth mentioning these were all originally bitmaps and had to be converted in order to be uploaded here. I doubt there’s really been any qualitative loss that’s taken place in the process, but you can grab the original .bmp files off the compendium disc image in that first link in this paragraph if you’re that inclined.)

The readme itself, included after the jump and available for download here should anyone want to view it natively (just open it in a text editor and it should play nice despite the fun file extension), is quaintly amusing if you read Japanese. In essence, it discusses the bonus directory with these goodies existing as a fun treat for people who own PCs (a rarity in 90s Japan), while also essentially saying, “Just because you can view this directory and copy these files to your computer doesn’t mean you have our permission to copy the rest of this disc’s contents, too, so don’t do that because that’s copyright infringement, okay!?” Polite, but stern, as is the way of many such disclaimers in Japanese. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Kinda curious about the demon "Agony" from Devil Summoner. Is there any explanation behind the demon's design by Kaneko? Having Jesus (sorry, "Jesus-like figure") be demoted to a generic demon is kinda wild, ngl

There is a Kaneko comment for Agony in World Guidance but it hasn't been translated yet as far as I know. This was another topic covered in the Fan Myths from last year. All we have is the Akuma Zensho profile:

Origin: Unknown A zombie who is always carrying a cross. He's a martyr who was not reborn in the Kingdom of God after dying. Because his people did not give their lives for their God, he was reborn as a demon. Though he lived through many forms of pain, his God did not ask this of him. Because he only cared about pleasing his God, he became a truly miserable soul.

The cross has really been quite the barrier to overcome in understanding what the design is; once you realize it's not Jesus at all, but some poor soul wrapped in barbed wire, it becomes a lot easier. Because yeah, he's a regular encounter:

He's just one of those Saturn-era pain/torture original demon designs, along with Inferno, Scarecrow, Padlock, Garrote, and more that Kaneko seemed to enjoy creating.

A lot of them seemed to be inspired by horror movies, Hellraiser in particular. Imagine these having the same kind of presence as a Cenobite or a victim of a Cenobite and they make more sense.

So the IMAGINE compodium and a random blurb in Dx2 says Uriel was the first angel to become a human. Where did they get that from?

Here's a link to the IMAGINE profile and here's a relevant snippet from Uriel's entry in Gustave Davidson's A Dictionary of Angels:

This idea that Uriel is actually Jacob is probably behind the profile's reference. The rest of the profile just seems to take from this entry verbatim, like him warning Noah, guarding Eden, watching over the heavens, Judgment Day, etc. Even in the SMT1 profile he's said to guard Tartarus and that's from this book's entry, too. Davidson's book is also one listed in the official Akuma Zensho bibliographies, so they almost certainly have a old copy in the office.

It seems in this case a reference book trying to cram as many sources as possible into an single entry (and hey, unlike the SMT profiles, it names what they are) is behind what otherwise seems completely outlandish. And it's certainly weird! I'm guessing when SMT profiles (especially long ones like those in IMAGINE) are being written from a single book like this Dictionary, there's no consideration for level of orthodoxy or tradition (or consistency); whatever sounds interesting is what goes!
