Once again I am here to post my mindless ramblings about Yona of The Dawn.
So enjoy this outrageously long post I've written simply because of a characters name and me being a massive loser who reads Wikipedia pages like it's the morning paper.
SPOILERS FOR CHAPTERS 100-MOST RECENT CHAPTER !!!
As a renowned Zeno enjoyer, and lover of over-analyzing media. I will finally ramble about his name (fyi if this makes me sound smart, then please reduce your expectations to zero because it's not true I am just a nerd obsessed with a silly little animanga).
Tumblr media
So to preface I have a very odd itty bitty fixation on quantum physics/mechanics & in the discussions of probability, quantum leaps, paradoxes, and just overall the big brain stuff. There's a thought experiment called Schrodinger's cat which is used to illustrate a paradox of quantum superstition. In which there is a box & in the box is a cat w/ a vile of toxic gas/poison.
The cat is simultaneously both dead and alive until the box is opened blah blah blah massive brain probability stuff. But tied to this thought experiment is also another part of this topic. It's called the quantum Zeno effect and to put it in simpler terms it refers to a slowing down of the evolution of a quantum state under the limit that the state/it is consistently observed or in much MUCH simpler terms a watched pot never boils.
If you as a reader apply that to Zeno as a character and his powers it's such a clever thing to come up with. An immortal character that can't age, can't get sick, can't die, and can't physically change named Zeno after the quantum paradox about how something won't change under constant observation essentially. It's just,,, wow.
The whole part with the dragons crest never leaving Zeno after Hiryuu bestowed it upon him knowing his "fate" and being the only thing that keeps him sated for long periods just screams the Zeno effect to me beyond the obvious immortality, not aging, ect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know at this point in my fixation with this series that Kusanagi never misses a detail, let's be honest, so I feel like the part with the crest is her waggling the actual nature of Zeno's powers in our faces. Given that his name may not be an obvious reference to his power(s) unless someone knows a single thing about quantum physics/mechanics. Like Kusanagi is shoving the details at us.
Kinda like, 'you guys aren't nerds enough to just google his name by itself so here's this little guide for you about his powers in a super duper simplified story-relevant way'.
However, this all leads me to wonder what/who specifically is watching Zeno then? If a watched pot never boils & Zeno can't die/change whilst being observed or a continuous outer force is always there then what would happen if this "watcher" stopped observing/happening? Is it the Yelllow Dragon up in the Heavens? Is it the Crimson Dragon King? So many questions.
I have no idea if Kusanagi did this intentionally, or with the thought that anyone would even find out. But I sure hope she did because it's just pure genius & adds even more depth to what's already there. It feels so intentional it'd hurt if it turned out not to be.

Damn, imagine if the sword won't work on Zeno unless Hiryuu's reincarnation, Yona, uses it on him. Zeno attempted to kill Hak in Yona's dream in order to trigger her.

Hey. Hi. Hello. Fuck.
OK just read the new chapter and had to share some thoughts.
1) the resemblance to the beginning of this journey. They looked for jae-ha last and he has been the first to disappear. Shin-ah was second and we are back with just kija. The dragons are being lost in reverse to how they were found. Aside from Zeno of course who, just as he showed up the first time makes his presence known only of his own accord.
2) Zeno being pressed for questions and obviously either lying or avoiding saying anything. Particularly with his quick response to the chalice.
Hear me out.
The chalice was the start of this mess for Zeno. It gave him immortality and with it centuries of agony. What if he suspects that there's a way to use the chalice once more to reverse it? What if it holds the secret that will let him finally die? The palace has been burnt to the ground, the sanctity of the mausoleum breached and the chalice stolen. We don't know what chagol did with it while it was in his possession. Maybe the circumstances combined and with everything on a knife's edge with the dragons and their holy artifacts/places, it all leads up for Zeno to have an out. To finally die. He loves the other dragons as he did his own dragon Brothers but he knows either way they will die and leave him like every generation before. If there is a chance that he can finally join them and all the others before. To join hiryuu in the heavens. I think he would be hard pressed to pass up that opportunity if it ever arose. It's the only thing I can imagine that would tempt him to in any way betray his friends. We know he hides history and info on the dragons many times in the series but this and the behavior surrounding it is all just so different.
This was total conspiracy theory right here but lemme know what you think.
Honestly in my ideal scenario with the dragons this whole issue with their powers leads to a form of death wherein they lose their powers and become human. Maybe that means the eyes of the dragon go blind. Maybe the green and white dragons become amputees. In some physical or metaphysical death they separate their lives from the dragons powers and that let's them stay with their loved ones.
I don't know but God damnit I can hope.

Conspiracy theory time
Please, tell me your craziest theories about Zeno (mine below).
Let's gather the informations about the chalice :
Chapter 235 when Zeno was attacked by the assassin who stole the chalice, he became unusually violent and commented he was desperately holding on to him.
CHapter 236 to protect the Red dragon, the dragon gods collected their blood inside the chalice and gave it to the human warriors.
Chapter 241 Holding the chalice in his last moments, Chagol expresses his last wish "If I could be reborn, next time I'd like the place I go to, to be more peaceful".
Chapter 236/241 when the dragons own the chalice, it regenerates their powers and heal their bodies.
Chapter 245 In Yona's dream a worried Zeno has the chalice in his left hand "Miss it's coming, don't let it get away".
Chapter 250 we cannot see Zeno's left side and determine if he has the chalice or not. He's alone, there are no dead (or living) bodies around him. He states he has been caught and the next panel oddly goes pitch black.
The questions are : where is he now? What was the meaning of the warning he gave Yona inside her dreams? Something is coming to where or whom? And what is Yona supposed to do?
My very imaginative theory is that Chagol drank from the chalice, somehow survived and gained the mastery over the dragons (becoming the famous phoenix perhaps, reborn from the ashes?). The four dragons went berserk because the chalice was originally meant to protect the Red deity and not some human. Zeno managed to keep his will like Ki-ja because of Hiryuu's earring. The two left dragons were sent to check on Chagol's enemies, Jae-ha to Yona and Shin-Ah to Suwon. Then Chagol summoned the dragons back somewhere, hence they disappeared one after the other. Zeno escaped and he was caught because Shin-Ah (who's now serving Chagol) found him. Thanks to his eyes the Phoenix now knows his position, which is why he is annoyed.
Zeno was warning Yona that IT is coming, a new supernatural being who could defy the divine order the heavens established. To stabilize the Dragons Yona must retrieve the chalice and once the 4 are gathered again, "to protect the king (Hiryuu)" maybe there's a chance for the sword and the shield to appear once and for all.

the dripping from out of frame, the slow turn, the hard cut……horror writers WISH they had a shoujo mangaka’s skill to invoke pure unadulterated dread
[ID: panels from chapter 256 of “yona of the dawn”. in the first panel, zeno stands up; his neck and robes are heavily stained with blood, and some of it is splattered on his cheek; he says, “i tried all i could to die…”. in the next panel, the phonomime “drip” is written twice in the corner, indicating that it’s coming from somewhere out of frame but zeno has yet to react to it. in the following panel, the dripping continues and he turns towards it. in the next panel, which is taking up most of the page, he stares at the source of the sound in horror. the final panel shows the roof of the palace; the sky above it is dark and cloudy, with sunlight beginning to break through the clouds. end ID.]

With this latest AkaYona chapter, yeah, I don't think this thing with the miracle cure plant was meant to cure the Crimson Illness, and I hoped it wasn't. It seemed too...not to say all that Hak went through was easy, but it made the plant seem like a mcguffin. A couple things here caught my eye and got my gears turning though.
Soo-won tried so hard to throw/pack away those bonds, but ultimately, he does care about Hak and Yona. In this chapter, the plant did not make the pain go away 100%, but he acknowledges that in the moments after Hak handed it to him, collapsed in his arms, he forgot the pain. Their bond in action was stronger than the illness/curse. And yes, that may just be overwhelming emotion, but what if it's something beyond that?
I'm thinking about the dragons' reaction when Hiryuu stayed human, the fact that he loved humans despite how awfully he was treated. From the dragons' perspective, it made no sense. He had a bond with them. He left them for what? How were humans worth it? Worthy of him? They gave him the dragon warriors and with them tried to recreate the kind of bond they understood. The warriors would love and be loyal to him unconditionally because their blood said so. Human bonds were too frivolous and couldn't compare with that, surely.
Did they have a grudge against the choice Hiryuu made? Even subconsciously? Zeno says that the dragons' short lifespans are because human bodies can't handle the dragon blood, but what all is involved in that blood? Perhaps some resentment? Resentment that Hiryuu chose the company of unworthy humans over that of the dragon gods.
In that case, what happens when a human shows that their human bond is unbreakable? Could that be the key, not only to "curing" the Crimson Illness, but also to saving the current dragons from young deaths?
Hak went through a lot with Yona before they even knew to look for the dragons, fighting off armies and falling off cliffs. (And I do so wonder what Hak would have done had Yona stayed in Fuuga like he planned, but that's a topic for another day.) When they found Kija, he had the perspective that I think the dragon gods did: Hak protected her for the money, and now that she had Kija, someone with a "real" bond to her, she didn't need Hak anymore. He would leave.
So, I'm wondering if it's Hak's loyalty--and how it motivates him to act for Yona's sake and Soo-won's sake--might be the key that finally shows the dragon gods what Hiryuu saw in humans and overturns their resentment.
Re: Akatsuki no Yona chapter 225 (released May 20, 2022)
Disclaimer: This is my first fandom/theory post ever. I'm trying to be less of a sticker on the wall and get over my fear of admitting I like things.

Zeno and Hiryuu
The next akayona's chapter is coming soon so i am writing down my last crack theory before it come : The "Zeno" who is with Yona and Hak and who caught Kija in the chalice is actually Hiryuu.. who took over Zeno's body after Zeno became a big dragon. The real Zeno is the one Yona met in her dreams.
The Zeno who appeared in the last chapter made me think of Hiryuu, in the way he acted, and i still find it strange how unbothered this Zeno seemed to be about the safety of the others dragons..

Hiryuu was also a big liar unable to answer questions so there is that.

Potential theory for akayona after reading chapter 257…
So we get a vision of the (potential) future in this chapter that is basically identical to how the entire series opened in chapter 1, right?
Keeping in theme with Yona’s recent visions, Hak and the dragons are seemingly not with her. It’s up for debate on whether the series will actually conclude in a way where some or all of the dragons die at the end, but I think most people would agree that its unlikely Hak will die.
If that’s the case, my thought is: what if that future that Yona is seeing is not one where Hak and the dragons are dead, but rather they are missing and Yona is leading the army as queen to go find them?
If Zeno really is the “final boss” of the series, maybe after failing to end his life and the dragon warrior cycle, he somehow makes an escape with both Hak and the other dragons as hostages or something?? I don’t know how this would work, but I feel like he is desperate enough at this point to pull off something unexpected. (I’m also wondering if he saw the dragons back in their human-forms in the last chapter whenever he turned around and seemed shocked? Maybe the dripping sound was their wounds??)
Of course, Soo-won is still alive at this point, so Yona can’t be queen. However, Soo-won said last chapter that he already said goodbye to Hak… so let’s say Yona and Hak make it to Zeno before Soo-won & company, and whatever ends up happening results in Zeno escaping with Hak and the dragons. What if then Soo-won arrives just in time to make Yona his successor before he says goodbye to her and actually dies from the crimson illness? It would explain how Yona ends up leading the Kouka army as the newly-minted queen to a seemingly unfamiliar locale without Hak and the dragons on an important mission…
I guess a less dramatic version of this would be that Soo-won doesn’t die, but he is still too ill to remain king and decides to make Yona queen anyway, and then he stays behind at the castle while Yona/the army go after Zeno.
I DON’T KNOW
Not saying I definitely believe any of this will happen, but it’s what’s been churning in my head since reading 257 and I can’t believe we have to wait till June for the next chapter 😭

Ok, today this thought is wandering around in my mind (or theory, call it what you want😅). We all remember the first dream of yona, right?
Tumblr media
In this dream hak died but in fact he lived. In the dream with the dragons she saw that all the dragons except zeno were dead.
Tumblr media
So my thought is that maybe zeno is the one who will die and everyone else lives in the end (because everything is done upside down from what it seems so...🤔) .
Either way, this is a thought that crossed my mind. I don't know how the story will turn out but ofc I can't wait to see what will happen afterwards😁.

ramble ramble ramble ramble zeno beloved ramble ramble ramble ramble
I’m gonna dump akayona thoughts here ‘cause I love this series lots and they make me very happy to ramble about! (warning for spoilers if you’re unaware of anything about zeno or his backstory)
Tumblr media
I don’t see a lot of people analyzing or digging at the things that I do, usually they’re more centered around widely known details and fan favorites and such.
So here we go:
Ever since Zeno wiggled his silly way into the group (the dragons, yoon, hak and yona) he completely threw away all of his self preservation. And you can say “well ofc, he’s there to protect yona” but I think you’d be wrong for simplifying it that way. He's such a complex character. Out of all of them he is the one that stands to be the least affected by Yona’s presence same with the presence of the other dragons. He simply decided to approach them on his own accord, they didn’t approach him. This guy has had to kill and run to protect him from others and from himself for millennia.
Tumblr media
He’s completely lost his purpose in life by the time we meet him in the series, having lost so much and constantly being at odds with the concept of time. But he found that purpose again in protecting the hhb, which is where I bring this back to the previous statement that he completely threw away all his self preservation, or rather he actually gained some.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the Xing arc the dragons end up being imprisoned, and Zeno willingly offers himself up to Mizari to have his arm cut off as means to get away easy, but they all outwardly express their disdain toward this. Jae-ha being the one to intervene and avoid Zeno being subjected to such treatment.
Tumblr media
Though I think it should be said that he could’ve easily sacrificed himself for them here, it's just his arm right? But he let's Jae-ha intervene and sway the topic away from him. Despite the fact that he could at any moment throughout the series (after his power has been revealed) when there’s a battle or confrontation, power his way through fights and run away or get help at the drop of the hat but guess what? He doesn’t do that, he stopped doing that for the sake of the others. He instead he chooses to stick by the side of his companions even if he could just as easily tear himself apart or be torn apart in order to help them escape.
A good example is this scene in the current arc:
Tumblr media
Even with the artifact from Hiryuu castle in their presence that causes there powers to amp up and everything, Zeno sits tight, literally. He sits there tied up tight with the others. I bring this scene up as an example because like I previously stated he could just tear himself apart here, now more than ever to help them escape. But he doesn't.
(Whether this is due to his wisdom beyond years or because he doesn't want to upset the other dragons is up in the air for sure but we're gonna say it's cause he doesn't wanna upset the others for the sake of this post)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel like it should be explained further, it’s been brought up multiple times throughout the series where Zeno’s partook, especially in anxiety inducing parts, the others don’t like to see Zeno hurt even if he heals, even if he’s used to the pain. They don’t like it, they’ve been very upfront about how much they hate it, how much it scares them to see him injured in ways that would kill any mortal being, in ways it would kill any of them. Seeing him bleed is the worst experience for them. And I think Zeno makes the conscious choice to no longer completely tear himself apart just to escape in order to save them because he doesn’t want to scare them more than they already are in the situations they get involved in. As well as when it wouldn’t be necessary to do so, when they work together just as well to escape without unnecessarily blood being shed.
Tumblr media
Zeno is honestly an enigma of a character, he says a lot but simultaneously says nothing. Which makes me love him even more.
What I’m saying here is all me reading between lines and using my own brain to come up with something that would make sense rather than it being a verbal statement or thought being stated in the series. There’s no real textual evidence that outright states that Zeno has made any of the choices I’ve stated, it’s just my own thoughts surrounding him.
At the end of it all here, I personally believe this is one of the best ways his character could be written, especially as the only one remaining from the original dragons. He gives things away to the group and the readers but only with bits and pieces. The rest is speculation or a matter of putting things together. In my opinion he keeps us hooked into the series, he’s the one character still present that carry’s so much weight and wisdom with him. He’s the one character in the hhb that understands the pain that each separate individual has faced that even they amongst themselves can’t understand.
Tumblr media
They’ve all learned how cruel the world can be, how painful being alive is in their own ways but in my opinion Zeno is the only one that understands their individual experiences infinitely. For crying out loud he knows things that the characters around him don’t even know and that we the readers don’t as well. He’s seen and lived through more life than them all combined, but he still holds onto his humanity albeit rather stubbornly. He still continues to learn and grow and above all else he sees that everyone is human and that there can be/is still good in the world even with all the bad.
Yona maybe be in the title of the series, but Zeno is still just as much of a main character as she is.

So, I have this theory that Hak will somehow be the key to Soo-won realising that he has to change his strategies, has to stop believing that everything his dad did and said was right, and that Yona's methods might actually be beneficial for them.
And I think that this might be the reason that sensei has yet to let Hak and Soo-won meet. Like there were so many times we thought that those two might finally have a proper conversation, but unfortunately, we couldn't get it. Now, Hak is the one person that Soo-won actually really looks upto and used to consider his goal. Growing up, he was the closest person to him, even when he didn't know about the circumstances surrounding Soo-won. So I think that right now, if Soo-won was to be in a situation where he feels stuck or lost, Hak could be the one who takes him out of it.
This actually occurred to me because of what happened in the latest chapter, where Geun-tae chose Yona's side. So what I think is that even if the other generals were convinced that Soo-won needs to change strategies, but he was still unable to leave his father's shadow, Hak might be the one to drag him out of it.
And since Soo-won probably thinks that Hak only has feelings of hatred towards him, he'll be even more affected by his support. Hak's genuine words of advice or concern or whatever it be, might be the sign that Soo-won needs to let go of his father's wishes, and worries about Yona being Il's daughter and everything else that's tying him down.
Yona had already started breaking down his walls, and Hak just might deal the final blow.

Is it just me, or can anybody else not stand the idea of Su-Won just lying down and dying in the palace? Like he did not just plan a whole coup for 9 years, then try to fix a whole ass country to sit down and die. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t support him but COME ON. If he’s gonna it’s sure as hell not gonna be because of the crimson illness. It’ll be like.. his last ‘fuck you’ to the gods, eh?

should we talk about how yu-hon was definitely aiming to kill yona in the carriage that day knowing that if yona, or as he saw her hiryuu, was dead then yon-hi would recover?
