What Franchises might go for in PSL 6 Draft?
Tumblr media
Pakistan Super League’s 6th edition is all set to take place from 20th February, 2021 with final to be played on 22nd March, 2021 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. The tournament would require a strong team composition for reaching grand finale and as a part of making teams, all the 6 Franchises had given their retentions list to Pakistan Cricket Board. All the retentions were announced by PCB’s twitter handle today which is just a day before the actual draft takes place. The draft for making up full teams for PSL 6 is scheduled on 10th January, 2021 in Lahore which will help in shaping up the teams for the flagship event of PCB.
Keeping a look at the retentions, it looks like all the teams have opted for those players which they feel can help them in creating a winning combination. Every team had an option of retaining a maximum of 8 players. All the teams retained 8 players except Peshawar Zalmi, who retained only 5 players. Majority of the retained players are local players, whereas, out of 45 retained players only 10 are international players. An evenly balanced set of players has been retained which includes openers, middle order batsmen, fast bowlers, spinners and all-rounders. Let us have a look on each and every team individually which will help in identifying the possible picks for 2021.
Islamabad United
Tumblr media
One of the most successful teams is Islamabad with 2 PSL titles to their name and they have retained 2 opening batsmen in which one has been traded with Karachi Kings. Other retentions include 3 all-rounders and 1 each middle-order batsman, fast bowler and spinner. Retained players include Alex Hales, Colin Munro, Asif Ali, Musa Khan, Zafar Gohar, Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf and Hussain Talat. Some of the major releases included Dale Steyn, Rumman Raees, Amad Butt, Phil Salt and Dawid Malan. But from the retentions, it seems that Islamabad’s management has gone for retaining performers and impact players only. With probably, the most balanced retentions, it seems like Islamabad will be eyeing on picking few batsmen of one whom can keep wickets as well along with strengthening their fast bowling unit. Another factor needs to keep in mind is that majority of England, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Australian players might not be available as they will be on their national duties.
Karachi Kings
Tumblr media
Defending champions have gone on to retain 8 players in which majority of local performing players are included. Retentions include the likes of Babar Azam, Sharjeel Khan, Imad Wasim, Muhammad Amir, Aamir Yamin, Waqas Maqsood, Arshad Iqbal and Colin Ingram. Karachi has opted for a majority of local players which seems that they will be relying more on local talent because international cricketing commitments for foreign players will make it tough. Looking at the retentions of KK, it seems they will be eyeing to select some all-rounders stuff including a wicket-keeping option. Karachi has gone for retaining majority of those players which will gurantee them good bowling stuff. Therefore, they will look out to pick middle-order batsmen including the likes of some hard hitting batsmen with spin bowling options. Some of the major miss-outs from Karachi’s retentions are Mohammad Rizwan, Chadwick Walton, Iftikhar Ahmed, Umer Khan, Cameron Delport, Umaid Asif and Chris Jordan.
Lahore Qalandars
Tumblr media
Finally, Lahore was able to turn the tables for themselves by finishing 3rd on the points table for the first time and peaked just at the right time of the tournament. Lahore was so close to winning the title but ended as runners up. The retentions list of Lahore included Mohammad Hafeez, Fakhar Zaman, Sohail Akhter, David Wiese, Dilbar Hussain, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Ben Dunk. All of these retentions were major performers in 2020 with each giving his performance at crucial stages of the tournament. However, Lahore didn’t retain one of their critical success factor, Samit Patel. It was earlier announced that Fakhar Zaman would not be retained but retentions list showed that Lahore has opted for retaining him. Key miss-outs were Usman Shinwar, Samit Patel and Chris Lynn. Lahore will be looking to pick some middle-order batsmen and spin options.
Multan Sultans
Tumblr media
Multan had their best PSL last year but was unfortunately not able to win the trophy. The retention list of Multan included Shan Masood, James Vince, Rilee Rossouw, Sohail Tanvir, Shahid Afridi, Imran Tahir and Usman Qadir. Multan has also retained those players which makes the core of their team including middle order and top order batting along with one reliable T20 bowler in Sohail Tanvir and 3 leg spinners. From the team outlook, it seems that Usman Qadir, this time might get a longer run with Afridi and Imran Tahir at the eve of their playing careers. Key players that were not retained by Sultans included Moeen Ali, Zeeshan Ashraf, Ravi Bopara, Junaid Khan, Muhammad Irfan, Muhammad Ilyas and Rohail Nazir. Looking at the retentions, it seems like Multan will be looking to pick likes of fast bowlers and middle order batsmen as it self-sufficient in the spin department. However, like majority of teams, Multan will also be searching for a wicket keeping option in the drafts.
Peshawar Zalmi
Tumblr media
One of few teams who are eyeing a complete overhaul is Peshawar Zalmi. They have retained only 5 players as there was an option of retaining 8 but quite a selective list is being selected by them. Keeping in mind their turn in the draft, they seem to select diverse group of players as they have retained only 1 fast bowler, Wahab Riaz; 3 batsmen, Kamran Akmal, Liam Livingstone, Haider Ali and 1 all-round option in Shoaib Malik. It seems that majority of batting talent has been retained but some lower order batting options and complete bowling unit shall be picked in the draft. Peshawar had not performed that well in the last season and may be they want to completely overhaul their team composition as they have even gone on to release Hasan Ali, who had performed brilliantly with bat and ball in the domestic 4-day tournament. Some major outliers from Zalmi were Hammad Azam, Umar Amin, Tom Banton, Liam Dawson, Carlos Brathwaite, Imam ul Haq, Yasir Shah and Rahat Ali.
Quetta Gladiators
Tumblr media
With most number of matches won in first four seasons of PSL, Quetta was named among top contenders as PSL returned home last year. However, Gladiators performed quite badly as they were 6th on the points table this year. Their combinations didn’t seem right and as a result of that, they have probably released all of their batting options. Retained players include Sarfraz Ahmed, Azam Khan, Ben Cutting, Muhammad Nawaz, Muhammad Hasnain, Anwar Ali, Naseem Shah and Zahid Mahmood. With decent performances in the domestic tournaments, Zahid Mahmood, unexpectedly has been retained. Some major players who were unable to see their names in the retention list of Quetta were Ahmed Shehzad, Ahsan Ali, Jason Roy, Fawad Ahmed, Tymal Mills, Sohail Khan and Khurram Manzoor. Keeping in mind the retentions list, core of the bowling unit has been retained, whereas, batting department’s overhaul will be done by picking appropriate players from the draft.
Let us all see that how teams shape up after the PSL draft on 10th January, 2021.

Aroha nui Christchurch
Madness seldom has a logical answer.
Let us focus on the great men and women we have lost. Let us forget the cowardly snake. He who shall not be named. He who shall wither while we thrive. Let us forget his incoherent rambling words. Let his malice strengthen us. Let his dastardly actions be the catalyst for our compassion. Let us show the world these are our brothers and sisters, our fellow New Zealanders, for we are a nation of immigrants. Let us show that these are our friends, our neighbours, our colleagues, our families, our countrymen. Let us embrace them with open arms. Let us be kind, for we are a people of peace and unity and hope. Let us choose love. Let us choose life. Let us choose cooperation and care. Let us contribute more than we take away. Let us help.
Let us honour the fallen.
Rest in peace Haji-Daoud Nabi, Naeem Rashid, Talha Rashid, Husne Ara Parvin, Mucad Ibrahim, Abdullahi Dirie, Atta Elayya, Hussein Al-Umari, Amjad Hamid, Mohammad Imran Kahn, Osama Adnan, Sayyad Milne, Vora Ramiz, Ashraf Ali, Khaled Mustafa, Hamza Mustafa, Ali Elmadani, Linda Armstrong, Syed Jahandad Ali, Ansi Karippakulam Alibava, Farhaj Ahsan, Mojammel Hoq, Kamel Darwish, Haroon Mahmood, Abdelfattah Qasem, Lilik Abdul Hamid, and those not yet named.
These are the names that matter. These are the lives that were lost.
As-salaam alaykum. Aroha nui.

PM Imran Khan secure the vote of confidence
Tumblr media
The process of voting for reposing confidence in Prime Minister Imran Khan has concluded in the National Assembly as the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) moves to counter the opposition’s ability to challenge the legitimacy of the incumbent premier’s government
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi tabled the resolution in the lower house on which voting is being held. The premier needs 172 votes to win the confidence vote.
Prime Minister Imran Khan reached the assembly hall shortly before the session commencement time. PTI lawmakers are also present in the assembly.

— Prime Minister's Office, Pakistan (@PakPMO) March 6, 2021
“That this House reposes confidence in the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Mr Imran Khan, as required under clause (7) of Article 91 of the Constitution Islamic Republic of Pakistan," said the foreign minister as he read out the resolution.

— Shah Mahmood Qureshi (@SMQureshiPTI) March 5, 2021
Following the tabling of the vote of confidence resolution, NA Speaker Asad Qaiser read out the procedure for voting.
Bells were then sounded in the NA in order to let all lawmakers present outside the hall to make their way inside, following which the doors were sealed.
After reading out the resolution, the NA speaker directed the legislators who wanted to cast a vote to make their way to another chamber inside the lower house in order for their votes to be recorded.
Due to the united opposition boycotting the voting process in the National Assembly, all opposition seats remain empty.
The 30th NA session – on a single point agenda – will make it clear whether PM Imran commands the trust of the house and whether the lawmakers who allegedly ditched the ruling candidate on the general seat in the recently-held Senate election stick to their stand.
PTI lawmakers started arrived at the assembly earlier and the party focused on ensuring full attendance of allied and party members.
The opposition alliance – Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) – stunned the PTI government on March 3 when PDM candidate Yousuf Raza Gillani pulled off an unexpected victory against the ruling party’s Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in the Senate elections on the general seat from Islamabad.
The five-vote victory in the capital’s Senate election brought the defining moment in the otherwise battle of narratives going on for months between the government and the PDM.
But before the opposition could move a vote of no-confidence, PM Imran announced that he would take a vote of confidence from the house. Countering the government’s move, the PDM announced a boycott of Saturday’s NA session.

  Temperatures rise outside parliament
Outside the parliament in the red zone, PML-N protesters and PTI supporters engaged in a short brawl and shouted slogans against each other. PML-N's Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal and Musadiq Malik were among the PML-N leaders present in the scene.
The incident occurred when PML-N leaders tried to address the media, PTI workers surrounded the PML-N leaders and a scuffle broke out. A large crowd has now gathered at D-Chowk and some political workers have entered the Parliament Lodges.
A large contingent of law enforcers has arrived at the scene and have managed to separate the political workers of the two parties.
‘PM Imran will start a new political life today’
Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed said he believes that Prime Minister Imran Khan would get the vote of confidence today.
“Today is a big day,” he said adding that PM Imran would start a new political life after today's vote.
It is unfortunate that the Opposition was not participating in today’s session, the minister lamented. “Imran Khan’s decision was a big step,” he said referring to the confidence vote.
Talking about the recent Senate elections, the minister said that the government won the majority of seats.
Numbers required
A total of 172 votes in the 342-member house are needed for a simple majority and to stay in power. The ruling coalition had 181 members but after the resignation of one of its MNA, Faisal Vowda, the number has come down to 180. The opposition coalition has 160 members in the house.
Party-wise, the PTI had 157 members in NA but following the resignation of a lawmaker, it has now 156 members while its allies include seven MNAs from MQM, five each from the PML-Q and the BAP, three from the GDA and one MNA each from the AML and the JWP.
Two of the four independents are also members of the ruling coalition; making a grand total of 180. Since the opposition has already boycotted the session, all the ruling party needs to do is to get all those standing with the government to vote for the PM.
Why is a vote of confidence needed?
According to Article 91(7) the “prime minister shall hold office during the pleasure of the president, but the president shall not exercise his powers under this clause unless he is satisfied that the prime minister does not command the confidence of the majority of the members of the National Assembly, in which case he shall summon the National Assembly and require the prime minister to obtain a vote of confidence from the assembly.”
Section 36 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007, explains that whenever the prime minister has to obtain a vote of confidence under clause (7) of Article 91, voting shall be recorded in accordance with the procedure set out in the Second Schedule, which defines the procedure for recording of votes.
Since all elections under Section 226 of the Constitution, other than those of the prime minister and the chief ministers, are held by secret ballot, the voting process will be open and if the premier fails to get simple majority – 172 votes out of the 342 votes – he is sent packing and the cabinet is dissolved.
Under Article 58(1), the president can dissolve the National Assembly if so advised by the prime minister but it can only happen before the house goes for a vote of confidence and a prime minister against whom a resolution for a vote of no-confidence has been passed can’t dissolve the assembly.
Article 58(2) states that “Notwithstanding anything contained in clause (2) of Article 48, the president may also dissolve the National Assembly in his discretion where, a vote of no-confidence having been passed against the prime minister, no other member of the National Assembly command the confidence of the majority of the members of the National Assembly in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, as ascertained in a session of the National Assembly summoned for the purpose.”
Article 91(8) states that the prime minister may, by writing under his hand addressed to the president, resign his office.
Voting procedure
The procedure for vote of confidence on the prime minister has been clearly defined in the Second Schedule of the NA Rules of 2007.
The Second Schedule states that before the voting commences, the speaker shall direct that the bells be rung for five minutes to enable members not present in the chamber to be present.
Immediately after the bells stop ringing, all the entrances to the lobby shall be locked and the assembly staff posted at each entrance shall not allow any entry or exit through those entrances until the voting has concluded.
The speaker shall then read out the resolution before the assembly and ask the members who wish to vote in favour of the resolution to pass in single file through the entrance where tellers shall be posted to record the votes.
On reaching the desk of the tellers, each member shall, in turn, call out the division number allotted to him under the rules. The tellers shall then mark off his number on the division list simultaneously calling out the name of the member.
In order to ensure that his vote has been properly recorded, the member shall not move off until he has clearly heard the teller call out his name.
After a member has recorded his vote, he shall not return to the chamber until bells are rung under paragraph. When the speaker finds that all the members who wished to vote have recorded their votes, he shall announce that the voting has concluded.
Thereupon the secretary shall cause the division list to be collected, count the recorded votes and present the result of the count to the speaker.
The speaker shall then direct that the bells be rung for two minutes to enable the members to return to the chamber. After the bells stop ringing, the speaker shall announce the result to the assembly.

PCB announces match officials' panels
Tumblr media
Following a comprehensive review and annual appraisal process, the Pakistan Cricket Board Thursday announced its panel of match officials for the 2020-21 domestic season, which will commence with the National T20 Cup from 30 September. The first round matches of the double-league competition will be held in Multan, while the second round will be played in Rawalpindi. The six-member PCB Elite Panel of Match Referees include Ali Naqvi (Lahore), Iftikhar Ahmed (Karachi), Muhammad Anees (Lahore), Muhammad Iqbal Sheikh (Hyderabad), Nadeem Arshad (Faisalabad) and Prof. Mohammad Javed Malik (Multan), while 14 members of the PCB Elite Panel of Umpires are Ahsan Raza (Lahore), Aftab Hussain Gillani (Bahawalpur), Asif Yaqoob (Islamabad), Faisal Khan Afridi (Sargodha), Ghaffar Kazmi (Lahore), Imran Javed (Karachi), Nasir Hussain Snr (Lahore), Qaiser Waheed (Lahore), Rashid Riaz Waqar (Lahore), Saqib Khan (Abbottabad), Shozab Raza (Lahore), Syed Imtiaz Iqbal (Karachi), Waleed Yaqub (Lahore) and Zameer Haider (Lahore). These 20 elite officials will be on 12-month retainer contracts and will be responsible for sharing officiating duties in the First XI Cricket Association and HBL Pakistan Super League matches. In the 2019-20 season, the PCB had offered contracts to 18 elite match officials. Mohammad Iqbal Sheikh and Nadeem Arshad, are the two additions in the match referees panel, while Aftab Hussain Gilani (promoted from the development panel), Imran Javed, Nasir Hussain Snr, Qaiser Waheed, Syed Imtiaz Iqbal, Waleed Yaqoob (promoted from the development panel) and Zameer Haider are the umpires who will be offered contracts for the first time. The PCB has introduced supplementary panel for the first time, which includes the match referees and umpires who were unable to find places in the elite panel. They will be offered season contracts, which includes match fees and daily allowances. This panel will be responsible for officiating in the Second XI Cricket Association matches and will set-up for First XI and HBL Pakistan Super League duties as and when required. The 72-member PCB Development Panel of Umpires has been equally divided into two groups, with the first group to officiate in the PCB-organised age-group matches and the second group to stand in club, grassroots and school fixtures. The playing control team in these matches will be led by the PCB Development Panel of Match Referees, which comprises 15 officials. The PCB Development Panel of Match Referees includes a female official, Saman Zulfiqar from Sheikhupura. This is the third successive year she has been named in the panel as the PCB continues to encourage its women officials to get involved with the game if they have any aspirations of representing the country at the international level. Similar process was followed and adopted while finalising women umpires for the 2020-21 domestic season, who will be offered season contracts. These women officials will be involved in officiating women's domestic matches, schedule of which will be shared in due course. The notable inclusion in the eight-member PCB Panel of Women Umpires is the addition of Sabahat Rasheed, who played 13 One-Day Internationals for Pakistan from 2005 to 2007. The 37-year-old from Lahore was a right-arm off break and is a graduate of Arts and Education. Bilal Qureshi, Manager, Umpires and Referees: "I want to congratulate all the match officials on their inclusion in the 2020-21 domestic panel and hope they will have a good season in which they will perform their duties to the best of their abilities. "This year's assessment and appraisal process was transparent and merit-based in which two independent former ICC match officials reviewed the performances of all the officials, while accessing their self-assessments and video decisions during the season (where available) as well as presentations, interviews, knowledge and understanding about the Laws, decision-making and man-management skills. Separately, the match officials also underwent fitness tests, which are mandatory and as per international standards. "This robust process was carried out to ensure the best match officials can officiate in the PCB-organised tournaments and through their good knowledge and understanding of the Laws and regulations, contribute in enhancing the standard and quality of the 2020-21 domestic cricket. "At the same time, we have provided a pathway to the supplementary and development panel umpires with the incentive being a place in the elite panel. I understand this is a challenging pathway but such is the role that only the best of the best can move up the ladder and this can only happen through determination, consistent performances, correct application of the Laws and regulations, and good match management." PCB Elite Panel of Match Referees - Ali Naqvi (Lahore), Iftikhar Ahmed (Karachi), Muhammad Anees (Lahore), Muhammad Iqbal Sheikh (Hyderabad), Nadeem Arshad (Faisalabad) and Prof. Mohammad Javed Malik (Multan) PCB Elite Panel of Umpires - Ahsan Raza (Lahore), Aftab Hussain Gillani (Bahawalpur), Asif Yaqoob (Islamabad), Faisal Khan Afridi (Sargodha), Ghaffar Kazmi (Lahore), Imran Javed (Karachi), Nasir Hussain Snr.
