happy indigenous peoples day ^-^ a year ago i found out my family is half indigenous, so ive made it a personal duty to try and reconnect in order to honor those ancestors and histories. it's not my fault that I may never know my tribal affiliation (we know they lived around Popocatépetl), but it is my responsibility to do my best to honor them. since starting grad school, i've made an effort to talk about my indigenous roots more often, and to be honest about the fact that i do consider myself mixed indigenous. I also talk about this taking into account that I have white privilege, and how this has complicated my relationship to indiginiety.
anyway, i went to an ipd event outside of boston today and was so happy!! i had to leave early for a health emergency (thank u random uti) but it was so fun and i experienced and learned a lot. loved the mexica dance group who danced for Huitzilopochtli (i love you Huitzilopochtli he was pulled for me during a tarot reading and he told me to be fucking strong!!!!), and i especially loved experiencing the seven sacred directions where the entire crowd moved as one. i talked to some lovely indigenous people and they gave me so much guidance and love! it made me feel so happy...I wish I was able to stay longer, but I enjoyed being in a space where I was so welcomed.
if you're detribalized like me or trying your best to reconnect, never be ashamed of the fact that you were forcibly removed from your tribal affiliation. never be ashamed of how you look like either! there were so many "white passing" indigenous folks there embracing and celebrating with those in full regalia, and so many people of many appearances joined in for ceremonial dance. even if you're 10% or 3% indigenous, I still think you deserve to know your ancestor's culture and history! i still think you deserve to honor those parts of you! they wanted us to forget about our indigenous roots for a reason, and i refuse to colonize my mind any longer. opening yourself up to indigineity, even if you don't know your affiliation or "how much" is in you, is far better than never learning a damn thing about indigenous folks.
i hope everyone had a lovely indigenous peoples day ^-^

I'm Afro - Taino
I chatted with a mate about my Taino heritage because he's also Taino and he discovered I'm not just Taino, but Afro - Taino according to my DNA results. I honestly never knew this. I knew my DNA results had stuff like the Congo, Northern Africa, Indigenous South American, and so on. But I didn't know what that meant.
I want to know more about where I came from, what my people and culture was like. I want to understand my history better.
I was curious if there was anyone who's also Afro - Taino who might be able to help guide me on where to look? Who to talk to, etc.
I'm still learning what it means to be Taino, but now I want to know what it means to be Afro - Taino. I want to know what happened to my people, etc. There's so much more stuff I want to know I honestly don't know where to even start.

Hetalia Headcanons - Cuba 🇨🇺🏝️🌺
his full human name is carlos ángel machado ruiz, or shortened to carlos machado. i don't have a set physical age for him but maybe around 30?
he's a marxist-leninist. very intelligent, intellectual but unpretentious, and politically active. he's an academic, probably has degrees in political science and/or economics. i could see him being a medical doctor as well, as cuba is renowned for its advanced healthcare.
he's friendly and generous with a laid back personality, loyal to his loved ones and passionate about social/environmental causes. he can be impatient, and does have a temper but it's hard to provoke and reserved for rude and ignorant people. very much a beliver of respect being a two way street.
his canon bday is may 20th and i honestly love that for him. classic stubborn taurus with a touch of unbothered gemini swag.
he's an ambivert, he throws a great party and likes to socialize but also keeps his circle small and needs a lot of alone time. i think he'd be old friends with russia, though they're not as close as they once were and ivan can get on his nerves. he understandably has beef with america, but is slowly becoming more civil with alfred.
he loves to read, particularly history and political theory. some other hobbies are swimming, fishing, playing the tres (a type of guitar) or afro-cuban percussion e.g. tumbadora (aka conga) and bongós.
his sense of humor is dry with a goofy side that comes out around people he's closer with. he has a quick wit and is always telling dad jokes. also very much a softie for kids, animals and nature.
i headcanon him as gay/demisexual, cucan is an essential ship for me personally so they're a package deal. he is so gentle with mattie, so giving and protective. they treasure each other selflessly and understand one another better than anyone.
he loves to eat and cook, especially loves when matthew cooks for him or they cook together. his favorite dish is black beans and rice with tostones. he also loves strawberry ice cream and tropical fruits.
he's afro-latino + mixed race, with yoruba (west african) taino (indigenous carribbean islander) and spanish ancestry. his skin tone would be a medium warm brown, maybe a 5 on the fitzpatrick scale. once again the canon design is kinda colorist.
he has a distinct accent and is mutlilingual, and speaks quite a bit of quebecois thanks to matthew.
his body type is buff and chubby, he's wicked strong and built like a tank but doesn't have that much definition bc the chub is hiding it. dad bod.... chest hair and moobs. he's about 6 feet tall. he has long dreadlocks that he's been maintaining since he was young.
i could see him being a lapsed catholic/culturally catholic but personally atheist. he's much more material than spiritual in terms of philosophy.
he smells like coconut, cinnamon and cigars (in a pleasant way)
he mostly dresses casually (hawaiian shirts and cargo shorts lol) if hes just chilling at home he's probably shirtless. earth tones suit him well, so do orange, yellow, pink, and jewel tones. bonus; he wears a gold chain and sometimes rings.
he partakes in alcohol occasionally, when he does he loves rum and fruit-based cocktails. sipping a lil drink on the beach is one of his favorite ways to relax and he deserves it. he does smoke weed recreationally but honestly i think matthew is way more of a stoner.

Hi riley I hope your day is awesome! I'm planning to commission a rather large pack from someone both to help them and also the indigenous community with resources. Do you have a list of Indigenous faces that you'd both love to have over 1k+ pack wise and also has the material to achieve that?
ok sooooo....... i'm loving this!!!! love to see indigenous faces everywhere. so, besides kiowa gordon in dark winds (what i just answered last) here are some faces i think deserve way more (and tbh i don't know if all can reach 1k but they deserve to be mentioned regardless!!!). i also put '!!!' next to my faves, but seriously all of these are perfect choices! the rpc would be so grateful. and and AND these are not all of my favorites, just those that don't have as many resources compared to other "popular" indigenous faces.
grace dove (secwepemc)
alaqua cox (menominee, mohican)
willow allen (inuit) !!!
anna lambe (inuit)
cara gee (ojibwe)
tanaya beatty (da'naxda'xw, himalayan)
morgan holmstrom (metis of cree, filipino)
martin sensmeier (tlingit, koyukon, eyak, white) !!!
luciane buchanan (tongan, white)
jana schmieding (lakota sioux) !!!
paulina alexis (nakota sioux) !!!
lily gladstone (blackfoot, nez perce, white)
ashley callingbull (cree) !!!
ellyn jade (ojibwe, taino, afro-jamaican, white) + two-spirit
dove clarke (blackfoot, black) + nonbinary

Hi there, I was wondering your thoughts on artists who leave the race of their characters "up to interpretation" or purposefully remain obtuse so they can ride both sides of the fence? example, a white artist drawing a white character with medium-dark skin and when POC asked to clarify their race so they could be respectful when drawing, the creator says "all i can say is they're nonwhite". Do you think that is dubious? As if they want props for being diverse without the responsibility that comes with having a nonwhite character?
(and i know it sounds confusing about "white character" but what i mean is the character can very easily be interpreted as white by the fandom and gain popularity, while another side could assume they're X race based on their skin, so creator benefits that way too instead of clarifying)
Hey!! I know what you're getting at. I think it can potentially depend on who's doing it and what the character is for?
Like if it's just an artist drawing their OC, and maybe they don't have all the backstory or character details worked out yet, or if they literally just wanted to do some character design practice so therefore they don't really have a full backstory in mind), and if they responded with something like your example when asked what the characters' ethnicity is, then it's less dubious. That could potentially be a case of not necessarily trying to benefit off of both sides.
But if it's an artist doing something like a webcomic, or something similar, then knowing a characters' ethnicity is more important. Them refusing to specify could get into the territory of homognizing multiple cultures and reinforce the idea that nonwhite cultures are all the same. Even if they specified something like "They Native American" or "they're Black" or "they're Asian" it's STILL doing this: like, if they're Native, then are the First Nations Canadian, Indigenous Mexican, Native from the Caribbean, are they Indigenous and Brazilian? What tribe(s) are they? Are they Inuk, Mixtec, Taino, Kayapo, or another tribe? If they're Black, are they Jamaican Canadian, Khoisan, Gullah Geechee, Somali-British, Afro Russian, or Aboriginal Australian? If they're Asian, are they Telugu, Armenian, Han Chinese, Bhutanese, or Kinh Vietnamese? All of these cultures can be VERY different from each other (even if, depending on geography and history, there could be overlap & similarities), so these distinctions are important. I think that IS dubious, if they do this.
White artists already get WAY more attention and praise for having nonwhite OC's in their art than actual artists of color, so when they do this it gets REAL sketchy real fast, and kind of feels like they know what they're doing, and they do it for praise. Like if they don't put in the effort in their nonwhite characters the way they do with their white characters, then it's definitely racist, and they're just riding with the approval in the way you say.

Get to know my OCs: Sentry Ojeda and life with Commander Mum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Evagria Ojeda was inspired by my maternal grandmother as well as a lot of other protective and supportive older women I've known in my life. My grandmother was Lenape and a lot of the other inspirations for the character were Taino or Afro-Latina, so that's just a bit of background to start and sort of explain where she comes in since I've said before Sentry is the OC who is most based on me.
-Evagria Ojeda grew up wealthy but ultimately gave away her inheritance to those in need in order to live her life as a paladin of Ilmater because she is a true believer in his teachings.
-She agrees with Father Lorgan's writings on Ilmater, so the two of them are close friends. Ilmater does not enjoy suffering or want his followers to suffer, he merely teaches that suffering is necessary at times in order to help others and must be endured.
-When she was young, her holy order worked briefly with The Harpers and she had a playful friendship with Jaheira due to her somewhat dry and snarky sense of humor.
-She is a genuinely good, open minded person. Not only is she aware right away Sentry is trans and willing to help him transition the way he wants, she is also aware he is a Bhaalspawn but believes that doesn't make him inherently irredeemable.
-Because all of her children are grown by the time she adopts Sentry, he is treated as her own son at the temple. She teaches him her culture, her language, and how to cook.
-Feeling valued and loved and being treated as a person instead of an idol or a weapon started Sentry down the road to rejecting Bhaal before he ever even knew he was chosen. Evagria gave him the tools he would need in order to save himself.
-Evagria's favorite recipes were feel good foods, cinnamon rolls and fry bread drizzled with honey were her specialties and those memories transcend even being stabbed and tadpoled. Even when he forgets most of who he was, Sentry can still make both of those dishes.
-Evagria supported Sentry's childhood paintings long before they were done in blood. Even when he painted dark or morbid scenes, she viewed it as healthy catharsis and complimented his work.
-While her life and love ultimately save him, her death is what made Sentry accept his role as Chosen of Bhaal. The darkness and pain he felt at losing the first person who was ever kind to him and treated him with dignity was a pretty crushing blow.
-The Emperor uses her form to visit Sentry in his dreams, knowing Sentry only ever was in love with Gortash and also that even Orin's attack couldn't erase Evagria's influence, it was an easy choice. Besides, she was an authority figure who had never steered him wrong. Although Sentry generally likes The Emperor and accepts him, he does find this impersonation the most difficult to forgive.
-Before Withers brings him back after Bhaal kills him for his insolence, Sentry is briefly able to speak with Evagria and tell her that it was her and not Bhaal or even Ilmater he drew strength from to smite Orin.
-When Sentry settles down finally, both his home with Halsin and his home with Astarion have Commander Ojeda's portrait featured prominently in the kitchen as well as above the fireplace. He always lights candles for her and leaves a plate of her favorite food and some of favorite liquor out.

Sprite De La Rosa
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Character Lore:
Sprite De La Rosa is a vivacious, pint-sized 17-year-old Mertilian born of Dominican and Haitian descent. She was born within the Caribbean Sea near Haiti and the Dominican Republic, but her family swam to the Pacific Ocean near Westshore when she was 10 years old.
She enjoys being a hairstylist for her friends, especially Terrina. She loves to moisturize Terri’s curls and she loves to give her ponytails and afro puffs.
Sprite speaks with an American accent, and her Spanish has Dominican dialect.
Sprite has scales on her back that give her the ability to breathe underwater in her human form.
As a Mertilian, she transforms into a human when she's out of the water, and back into a mermaid when her entire body is submerged in water.
Alongside Bailynn Lo-Shanta, she often participates in social justice activism to help improve her community. She speaks out against issues like racism, genocide and slavery.
She is surprisingly knowledgable in human history. She knows about the Taino genocide in the 15th century and enslaved Africans being imported to the Caribbean in the 17th century.
Sprite is fluent in English and Spanish and she doesn't play when it comes to speaking Spanish. Having spent her life near Haiti and the Dominican Republic, she knows that Dominican Spanish isn't the same as Mexican Spanish, or Castillian Spanish.
“Deja que fluya” is her major moral, it means “go with the flow” in English.
Sprite and Izzy are the ultimate tag team, they love to sass their enemies and throw comebacks at them.
Her parents named her Sprite because she reminded them of fairy figures from the surface world’s fairytale books.
Her favorite books are romantic fiction and fantasy.
Mertilians are free to roam the ocean on their own once they turn 13. Her parents are deeply protective of her safety, but they’re trying to let their daughter enjoy life in Westshore.
She LOVES to dance when she's on legs, mostly to salsa, boogaloo and hip hop.
Sprite can talk to sea creatures like dolphins, whales and fish, but she can't talk to land animals.
She has a special Siren Song that hyptonizes those who hear her singing voice. She rarely uses it at all, but she only uses it for when she needs to save her friends.
Sprite is skilled in playing the guitar and the harp. If the Terrestrial Kids were a band, she would play the bass guitar.
She is fascinated with the concept of peanut butter, and she loves to spread peanut butter on everything she eats.
Sprite is the biggest cheerleader to her team. She loves to encourage her friends to prove their worth even when they’re faced with impossible challenges or foes.
Terrina has a huge fishbowl for Sprite to swim in for when she brings her to El-Doe.
Her favorite treats are Dulce de Coco (Coconut Sweets) and plantains.
Her body constantly smells like the ocean. It's mostly a pleasant smell of coconut and sunscreen. She often "stinks like seaweed" after swimming in the ocean in mermaid form, but she covers it up with perfume.
One of her favorite places to visit are the islands of Puerto Rico, Haiti and the beaches of Florida.
She hates the bitter cold of winter on the surface land. Sure, she can handle cold waters, but not cold air. Expect her to wear a huge puffy coat in the wintertime.
Mertilians have different concepts than humans: When a Mertilian dies, their bodies evaporate into seafoam. Their bodies are strong enough to withstand the pressure of the underwater trenches, and they're even stronger than humans when they're on land.
Sprite has a crush for Izzy, but she doesn't know how to express her feelings for them. The two are currently in a situationship in which they are crushing on each other, but not interested in a serious romantic relationship.
Sprite yearns for independence from her parents to spend her life in Westshore, but she is learning to hold a job so that she can be able to financially support herself as a human.

So...why call yourself 'White Yardie'? Or is this a misnomer? Your whole persona is based around your title. Are you actually ethnically Caucasian or 'Jamaican ' white? Are your parents 'white'? None of these questions were answered. 'Fair / brown/red skin' Jamaicans have, since slavery times, sheltered under the umbrella of 'whiteness' to separate themselves from black skinned Jamaicans. George William Gordon was not ethinically white as you confidently stated. He was a 'fair skinned' black man of mixed ethnicity and was born a slave. His white SCOTTISH father gave him, his son, freedom at the age of 10. GWG mother was an enslaved African. To describe Indians (0.8% of the population) as more authentically Jamaican is dispicable and is divisory. Afro-Jamaicans form over 90% of the population and 10% is everyone else. It is a tragedy that the original inhabitants of the island - The Tainos were wiped off the face of the earth by the Spaniards. And it is a further tragedy, that enslaved Africans who toiled the land for 400 years with blood sweat and tears, never once tasted the abundant fruit of their relentless, enforced, barbaric labour and their children today,at home & across the diaspora are barely surviving on the bitter fruit discarded by the colonialists in 1962. You really are a comedian because listening to you was a huge joke!
