It's pretty rare that I'll wait for a shot when I'm out on my walks, so rare that I've just done it two days in a row. Weather was a bit pants so thought it was worth waiting by the small pond to see if one of the dragonflies would stop for a minute. It was worth waiting. Taken on 2021 14th September, I found a female southern hawker (Aeshna cyanea) that appeared to be worn out, so much so that I could get this picture. After the picture, I transported it to the university pond to let it rest, but when I put it on a reed, it flew off despite being exhausted out of nowhere, a male tackled her to the ground, then gripped her neck with his cerci so the two could mate on a nearby tree. Southern hawker (Aeshna cyanea) shot in the same place but on a different day to the photo I posted earlier this week. The heatwave we've just had in the UK may have been hard work in a lot of ways but it did have its upsides too. Being here, watching the dragonflies (and melting a bit) was worth all the discomfort. Had a little lie down on my walk yesterday morning to catch this southern hawker (Aeshna cyanea). They're described as an inquisitive species and this one certainly had no problems with flying very close, often hovering within a few feet. It wasn't so close when this was taken but cropping for Instagram gives you erm, more options.
