Haven’t seen anyone talking about it on here, but is anyone else getting the vibe that this whole episode was basically Captain Freeman and the Ceritos as a whole getting thrown under the bus by our “good friend” Admiral Les Buenamigo as expendable bait to show off his fancy A.I. ships? Similarly, while I don’t have concrete proof and his voice is wrong to be the one from the flashback, I suspect the Admiral and his Texas Class ships are linked to the illegitimate project young Rutherford got roped into.

So today I finished rewatching Lower Decks in preparation for season 4’s premiere and I’m sorry if this is the dumbest thing to complain about but I just need to get it out there.
It bothered me immensely that the big bad of season 3 was a Hispanic guy from Texas. Like, of all people, why him??? Trek has so little Hispanic/Latino representation that I instantly latched onto Buenamigo when he was introduced. And to just throw that in the trash and make him a villain really angers me.
Do you know how fucking overjoyed I was when I saw Buenamigo had an Alamo on his shelf? The symbol of my hometown?! And then later when they showed the rest of the Texas memorabilia on his shelf including two flags, four commemorative plates, and a lone star. Sorry if this is graphic, but I was practically creaming my pants.
So to learn that he was a selfish fucking douchebag that only cared about advancing his career, used Rutherford and forced the implant on him to cover his tracks was extremely frustrating. My disappointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined. And that also kinda reinforced the stereotype of Hispanics being shady and untrustworthy. Which, you know, is fucking awful.
And the Texas class. Oh God the Texas class.
Look, I enjoyed the season 3 finale. It was cool seeing all the California class ships in a space battle against a super powered Starfleet vessel. But there was this looming implication throughout the episode. The fact that the problem was the Texas class threatening to end the California class, the Texas ships turning evil and destructive, and all the Cali class ships coming together to destroy the Texas ships… it gave off some real California supremacy vibes.
I do not think Texas is perfect. It has a shitload of problems, especially in regards to their politics. But it is big and beautiful and diverse. I grew up in San Antonio where the majority of the population was Hispanic/Latino, so seeing the lack of representation for my ethnicity in media (positive rep, I should say) makes me so upset. We deserve better. Texas deserves better, at least I think so.
And one more thing regarding that Cali supremacy: California's not that fucking great. Texas has its fair share of natural disasters, but at least we don't have constant earthquakes and forest fires. And if y'all haven't noticed, a lot of people have been leaving California to move to Texas in the last decade. I wonder why that is...
Yeah I know my bias is showing. No I am not sorry.

Admiral Buenamigo (aka Admiral (not so) Good Friend
I can’t stop thinking about Buenamigo from Capt. Freeman’s prospective (this also applies to Admiral Freeman and Beckett)
Imagine you have a friend--such a good friend that your daughter calls him “Uncle Les”. Then that friend not only sets you up for failure to pursue his own agenda, he’s willing to actually KILL YOU AND YOUR ENTIRE SHIP!!
That’s so heavy. I mean, it’d change her whole worldview--like how did we not know this person we thought we knew for decades! It’s just WOW.

(Too Many) Admiral Les Buenamigo Head-Canons
1. Grew up as a family friend of Alonzo Freeman (Alonzo being named after Les’ father), where Les was something of a little brother to Alonzo.
2. Les has always been fascinated by and talented with engineering.
3. Worked as part of the Support Team for Nova Squadron at Starfleet Academy, which is where he met Carol Mariner.
4. Introduced Alonzo and Carol to each other, and was one of Alonzo’s groomsmen at the wedding.
5. Assigned to the Galaxy-class Project at Utopia Planitia right out of the Academy... and remained an Ensign for the duration of the project (which was about six years).
6. Pattern emerged where Les was assigned to various projects that would last for years, and only get promoted at the end. (Danube Runabout project, Defiant class project). Meanwhile, his friends are working their way up the ranks, with Alzono already in the Admiralty, and Carol a mid-ranking officer on the Enterprise.
7. Les dreams of making a name for himself in Starfleet, designing the Texas-class starship. Finally, he is assigned to the Prometheus-class Project as a Lieutenant Commander, where he is promised a chance to work on his own project once this is done.
8. Problem is, part of the assignment is the Prometheus’ auto-piloting during Multi-Vector Assault Mode, and while Les is a fantastic engineer, computer programming is not his skillset. But his career is saved when he notices the talents of young Samanthan Rutherford, who IS brilliant with computers.
9. Les basically trades starship parts to Samanthan (for his shuttle races) in exchange for his computer code for Prometheus. The young man gets better parts for his shuttles, Starfleet gets top-running computer code, and Les gets the credit, and, in his mind, a long overdue promotion and chance to work on his own project.
10. Les encourages Samanthan to apply to Starfleet Academy, intending to use him to complete the Texas-class, which Les has now come to envision as an automated starship, based on the Prometheus class.
11. Unfortunately, there is an “accident” (secretly the result of Samanthan’s demented and evil-prone AI code), but Les can’t let this kill, or even delay, his project. So, he gives a bogus investigative report blaming human error, wipes Samanthan’s memory upon his Cyborg conversion, and uses his connections to arrange a transfer to a different division in Starfleet (Carol’s division, but as a staff officer for some bigwig). (It is because Les covered everything up that he did not discover the AI was the cause of the “accident”, leaving the problem unaddressed for years).
12. Legitimately does good work during the Breen Attack on Earth in the Dominion War, where he jury-rigs a shield that saves a good chunk of Starfleet Command, as well as a visiting member of the Federation Council. The Admiral that Les was a staff officer for was critically injured, so Les was tapped to fill the position temporarily. With his connections to the highly-ranked Alonzo, as well as a grateful Federation Councilor, Les’ position is made permanent.
13. Prior to this, Les was the one to give Beckett Mariner her two years of horse-riding lessons (teaching her how to be a cowgirl, basically), and also tutored her for Early Admission to Starfleet Academy (a la Wesley Crusher, only it worked).
14. Les is the source of Beckett’s philosophy of ‘rules that get in the way of helping people are better off broken’, because that is how Les justifies his corner-cutting to himself.
15. Used his new rank to help protect Beckett’s career after Beckett went AWOL from her second starship to rescue General K’orin from a Klingon prison. Les’ help ensured that Beckett was not discharged, but instead transferred to Carol’s division of Starfleet (though not to the Cerritos just yet).
16. Les continues to be friendly with Alonzo and Carol, but now that he is in Carol’s division, he quietly stonewalls Carol’s idea for Operation Swing-By until his baby, the Texas-class, is ready, because he likes Carol’s idea and decided to steal it to make a name for himself and his class of starship.
17. The Texas-class is actually a masterclass in starship engineering, and would make an excellent starship, if it hadn’t been for Les’ insistence on making it automated. And if he hadn’t used Samanthan Rutherford’s AI coding (but if he’d used anyone else’s, he wouldn’t have been able to take the credit).
18. Sam Rutherford was assigned to the Cerritos so that Les could keep tabs on him, since it wouldn’t be strange for Les to keep track of his friend Carol’s ship.
19. Les was the one, along with Alonzo, to transfer Beckett to the Cerritos from the Quito, as a genuine friendly favor.
PS: Hello everyone! This is my first major post here! I had a lot of fun thinking these up, and I hope it captures the right feel for this character. Les is someone sociopathic and self-obsessed, but slick. There should be enough here to justify Beckett calling him “Uncle Les”, and for his corruption to be unthinkable to Carol. Not only that, but he has to go from Lieutenant Commander (as seen in Rutherford’s cyborg-based memory) to Vice Admiral in only a few years. Go ahead and share any thoughts or head-canons you have about him as well!

It’s time to call out some problematic admirals in the latest episode of the Casual Trek podcast.
We recap and chat about episodes from different series of Star Trek, and in this case, about some badmirals!
First we’re off to Star Trek Lower Decks and Les Buenamigo in “The Stars at Night” where he tries to replace all of the California Class ships with faulty AI ones.
Next we’re over to Star Trek: The Next Generation and Erik Pressman in “The Pegasus” where he tries to recover an illegal experiment and had previously been a Bad Captain who ordered Riker to do awful things.
Finally we’re proving that no one’s above reproach and calling out JL himself in Picard’s “The Next Generation” where he endangers the careers of his friends and steals a ship.
You can listen to us talking about badmirals, Star Trek and all manner of other things by looking for Casual Trek in your podcatcher of choice!

20 Questions for Fic Writers
1. how many works do you have on Ao3? 170
2. what's your total Ao3 word count? 336,231
3. what fandoms do you write for? I started with Whiskey Cavalier after it was cancelled. But now it's various Star Trek--mostly Voyager & The Next Generation
4. what are your top five fics by kudos?
A Clear Future From an Uncertain Past - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Lower Decks (Cartoon) [Archive of Our Own] - After the Texas-class incident, Samanthan Rutherford ponders what Buenamigo had done to him
A Difficult Debrief - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Lower Decks (Cartoon) [Archive of Our Own] - Admiral Wong must answer some difficult questions following the disastrous events at Douglas Station.
Doppelgangers - Chapter 1 - TVgirll1971 - Multifandom [Archive of Our Own] - Multi-chapter fic. Over the years, multiple actors have played multiple characters in Star Trek. Of course it's a coincidence. Or are there connections we don't know about?
Doubt - TVgirll1971 - Bones (TV) [Archive of Our Own] - It's been months since Zack confessed to killing Ray Porter and Booth is still looking at the case file. It's an open and shut case but Booth's not buying Zack as a murderer.
Friendship Lost - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Lower Decks (Cartoon) [Archive of Our Own] - Carol tries to process the complete betrayal of her friend, Admiral Les Buenamigo.
5. do you respond to comments? Yes.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I'd say An End to Pain - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Picard [Archive of Our Own] It's Deanna contemplating what she did to drive Will away after the death of their son and her resentment that Will just left without even trying to understand why she did what she did. (For the most part, I don't have angsty endings. I have angst in the story, but I usually end on a hopeful note)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Almost all of my fics end on a positive note. I'd say the happiest would be D'Vana Tendi's backstory fic in Knowledge for Knowledge's Sake - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Lower Decks (Cartoon) [Archive of Our Own]
8. Do you get hate on fics? Not really, just a few comments coitizing B'Elanna Torres/Tom Paris.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? No. I've written maybe two love scenes but they aren't heavy. It's not really my thing.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I've written a few. I wouldn't call any of them crazy though. I just wrote a crack piece called Jellico's Excellent, Wonderful, Very Bestest Day - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Lower Decks (Cartoon) [Archive of Our Own] but that was based on the Lower Decks Crew Handbook.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I don't know.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Not that I'm aware of.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? Will Riker/Deanna Troi
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Nothing I'd call a WIP. I have a few ideas. I do keep saying I want to do a Strange New Worlds fic where Una gives Spock advice about whether he'd make a good first officer. But I keep putting it off. I have a few other ideas that are pushed way back in my mind involving Owen Paris's death (that might not get written simply because it'd be complicated to write since it's action).
16. What are your writing strengths? I don't know. I do believe I'm good at displaying emotions. I "see" the scene in my head so I try to write out how the "actor" is playing it. I think I'm good at dialogue.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I'm not real detail oriented. Plus, sometimes I worry that my endings are too abrupt. Also, I don't have the motivation to write very long multi-chapter stories. Most of mine are one shots.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I did it a few times in my early Whiskey Cavalier fics where I had Susan Sampson say something in Spanish.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Whiskey Cavalier
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? I'd have to say The Mystery of Level 10, Section A - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Voyager [Archive of Our Own] because it was a very plot heavy story, whereas most of my fics are just character pieces. So, I'm very proud of that one..
