ACSWY Historical Timeline
Not me desperately creating a timeline to keep track of all the small morsels of Will and Mike’s past history sporadically dropped in @campbyler’s “a cruel summer with you” fic because I’m going insane wondering what happened...
They are currently 19 in 2023, having just finished their first year at college.
2022 (18 yo) -
Will pushed Mike off the dock and he had trouble swimming apparently lol
But Mike also apparently shoved Will in the lake at some point
[not at camp] “follow the sparks (i’ll drive)” occurs
2021 (17 yo) -
Something made Mike’s anger at Will “return with a real vengeance”
Something happened that had them on even footing that they “do not talk about” (both POVs mention this year as off-limits conversationally lol) [next bullet point?]
Will had a breakup and Mike was apparently there for him “as much as Max and El” (references to what Mike did in Ch 1)
[Joyce and Hopper get married]
2020 (16 yo) - Their first year as junior counselors.
[not at camp] The Pasta incident (Mike got sauce all over him and Will saw the mess over FaceTime)
[Mike came out as bisexual this year, though not at camp]
[Joyce and Hopper move in together]
2019 (15 yo) - The year “their group of friends really became a group.”
The slime incident (which caused Mike to have to shave his head--he retaliated in some way that also caused Will to have to shave his head)

Dustin and Mike did gave “the worst rendition of “baby” by justin bieber to ever be heard in all of human history” at the talent show, subsequently ending the annual talent shows lol
Mike and El start dating at the end of the summer

2017 (13 yo) - The boys’ first year at camp.
They kissed (probably at an end-of-summer camp dance during “Fearless” by Taylor Swift) and it was Mike’s first kiss

Will alludes to Mike previously orchestrating something for revenge over what happened when they were 14
A previous time they were on even footing: “the last time they’d been on even footing like this had been…” [separate from 2021 incident, what happened??]

HI HELLO friends bee here. live from the google docs and also discord. and going a bit. A Bit Insane. anyway. here are my incoherent rambley thoughts regarding will and derek and how they broke up
anyway. this post is what got me thinking about the lead up to will and derek's break up....and also. the wish you were sober references WHICH MAKE ME ABSOLUTELY <JAHDJSHFKJHHH anyway.
we know that no one will be consuming any alcohol in this fic - however, this does not mean they didn't consume it outside acswy's present timeline.
will woke up to water and ibuprofen on his bedside table.
what do these often go hand in hand with? HANGOVERS, PEOPLE. HANGOVERS.
*wish you were sober plays ominously in the background*
anyway. me and wayli were discussing this and we think that the lead up to will ending up with a hangover could've been that derek (who is a year older than him, and will would've been a junior in high school at this point in 2021) invited will to the senior prom afterparty , (GORGEOUS REFERENCE. BTW.) where he inevitably got drunk and mike picked him up.
at which point, will and mike kissed in mike's car. for the second time (mike references in uh. one of the chapters i don't remember which one that he and will had kissed MORE THAN ONCE before their kiss in the isolation cabin. we know they kissed when they were 13...so....what was the other time...)
anyway. Anyway. don't know the details just yet because we haven't gathered enough evidence to make a clear conclusion but this is a basic speculatory timeline of events:
will goes to a senior prom after party with derek, probably at some point in may 2021 -> he gets drunk and tells mike to come pick him up -> wish you were sober references come in, THEY KISS -> camp starts in late may or june -> derek finds out about the kiss and breaks up with will in june/july 2021

ACSWY OFFICIAL LIVE TIMELINE
as one direction once said, "you and me got a whole lot of history (whoa)," so we thought that this timeline might be a useful reference for you (and us!) to keep track of mike, will & co.'s very loaded history within the acswy universe! this will be updated as more information is revealed -- that said, feel free to holler at us if you feel we've missed anything!
only significant months and/or dates will be highlighted. if a month is skipped, nothing significant happened and/or significance has not been revealed yet. if there is a timeframe, it means no set date has been determined, but the event happened within that ballpark.
timeline begins below the cut:

ohhh such a fun question!! i am answering without suni's input but hopefully she agrees and if she doesn't she can come fight me in a rb idc 🥊
it was mentioned briefly in ch01, but el's background is wildflowers!! for sure a picture that she took. i think that after ch09 she changes it to a picture of an animal she took at the zoo! but i think that she always has pics that are Hers bc she likes to have that personal touch. i am sure that the rest of the party has featured in her lock/home screens as well!
not to #expose max as #sentimental but she definitelyyy has a picture of her and lucas as her lockscreen and then one of her and el and will as her homescreen ❤️
i think lucas just has Max for Both his lock and home screen bc one thing abt lucas is he's obsessed w his girlfriend. and also doesn't care tht much out the customization of it all. but i do think he has focus lockscreens for school and practice and has uconn/husky logos lest he be distracted by his beautiful girlfriend <3
dustin is chaotic and absolutely has the emoji lockscreens that came with one of the newer updates in the last year but it's an emoji combo that makes no sense to anyone but him. like 🧸🗿🥪
mike is a little harder to pin down for me 🧍♂️i think probably a picture of a pretty spot of camp whiteman or a place on brown's campus -- something that makes him happy to look at!!
for willlllll i don't think he would be likeee. Brave enough to have his own art as his lockscreen but i think he would for sure have his favorite painting as it, or a design he liked from an artist he follows...i feel like his lock and homescreen are very meticulously curated and he has different icons for his apps to match his theme and is just very specific about everything!

are there any cute personalized items on the dashboards / interiors of mike and will's (+ rest of the party's if willing to say) cars? asking for.. fun reasons :D
i would say both mike and lucas value their cars looking Nice over personalization (losers 🙄) but i do strongly believe that mike has one of those tree-shaped car fresheners that doesn’t even have a scent anymore just for the #aesthetic. i think will has a steering wheel buddy (probably a bear or a bunny) and some pins stuck into his front visors, plus a plush keychain hanging from his rear view mirror (snoopy. to me. if you care)!! el also has stuffed animals Everywhere in her car and i think she has those little flower vent clips!! and her and will both have the little bath and body works car scent clip things!!
for max and dustin i don’t think they Super personalize anything but i think they both have fairly decent CD collections and their CD cases are personalized!! i also think their cars are the messiest of everyone’s 😗 dustin especially!

What are Mike and Will’s top three artists? (Idk if you’ve mentioned it before sorryy)
oooh i don’t think we’ve named specific favorites for them before!! i don’t know if we’ll be able to just name Three (edit: coming back to proofread after typing out this ask. i did not just name Three), bc to me acswy mike and will both have pretty varied music tastes — i think they’d both listen to a lot of different genres and artists, especially music that their friends/family/assorted loved ones introduce them to that might not be something they’d usually go for.
mike: we did mention in ch2 that mike has a demon days poster above his bed in the blue cabin, and while i don’t think gorillaz is one of his Favorite groups by any means, i do think he 1. listens to them a lot while driving specifically and 2. just reallyyyy loves their album art. to me mike is also such a pop punk enjoyer, so i think some of his go-tos include bands like all time low and paramore and blink-182, probably with a little midwest emo thrown in bc the boy did literallyyyyy grow up in indiana. i do also think he has a soft spot for feel-good pop, especially boyband music like 1D and BTR, and i think 5sos is not technically a boyband (or that they don’t like to be called one? iirc? maybe?) but i think he would listen to them quite a bit as well! really and truly i think mike would just like a little bit of everything, and his fav artists probably rotate a lot depending on his mood.
will: always a jeff buckley enthusiast across universes to meeeee, and the clear answers here are also the cure/the clash and other oldies rock OBVIOUSLYYYY but i think he would also totally dabble in typical Male Manipulator Music lol with likeeeee peach pit and pool house and the strokes especially. i think he’d also be into midwest emo (cannot escape his fate), and maybe also deftones and ptv a little bit (<- self indulgent and me projecting but i am not sorry). i think he also has a soft spot for pop, but not really in the same way mike does — for example, el definitely makes him listen to a lot of carly rae jepsen and the like when they’re together, and he also has a lot of good memories of listening to older pop songs with his mom when he was younger! like. he hits shuffle on his liked songs and it’s destiny’s child followed by radiohead followed by jenny by studio killers. he contains multitudes i’m afraid

Is Will a sneakerhead or does he not care whatsoever what shoes he wears?
ooooh i’m assuming since you specified will in particular that you maybe came here from another post or because of something we said in the fic, but we have indeed made our will byers a little bit of a shoe guy!! i would definitely not call him a sneakerhead in the traditional sense — in that we don’t think he cares much for collecting them for trading/value purposes or anything like that, and i don’t think he is too knowledgeable about collections’ histories and whatnot — but he definitely is very interested in them and i think they are an article of clothing that he would take real pleasure in finding rare and interesting pieces for!! the camp whiteman attire is white sneakers only, so unfortunately he does not get to showcase this often during the summer, but we included a couple of pieces we think are very him in this moodboard (especiallyyyyy the bowie sneakers which have been on my acswy will moodboard FOREVERRRR) and i think they are a fun way for him to express himself stylistically. we also made our mike wheeler a little bit of a Jacket Guy in the same sense — not really to collect to sell or anything like that, but i think they would both be ecstatic to find unique pieces for themselves at places like vintage stores or secondhand online and to show them off (like mike with pins on his jackets for example)
anyways to answer your question: definitely not a traditional sneakerhead, but he absolutely Does care
#i have started to feel this way about bags recently so that might be a road i go down in the future#but anyways like !!! just one of those little character details we came up w tht unfortunately we can’t work into this fic too much bc of#their uniforms and such#but it is very important to us#i think also shoes and sneakers particularly are a very practical item of clothing#not like for example if you’re into collecting smth you can’t wear or use often#so i think for him it’s an interest that he can also get use out of year-round and can still be really cool and expressive#he also got a pair of sneakers he’d been eyeing from his parents for his 17th bday and to me that is what really kickstarted the interest#if you care.#asks#acswy reference

this is a little bit random, but do the characters have any specific hairstyles you'd been envisioning for them? or any specific vibes/style when it comes to clothes?
i really like to doodle and this fic is my current brain-focus, so i was curious!
hello suni here! thea answered with some hair references for the entire party here but because i am extra as all hell, here are moodboards for mike and will’s styles (with more for the rest of the party to follow)!
acswy will is a big fan of sweaters and stripes (!!) and he looooves a good colorblock moment! i see him in a lot of earth tones (it’s easier for him to match and layer that way. he’s just like me fr) with the exception of a few choice colors (bright yellow, red, etc). to Us he’s also a shoes guy but in a very lowkey and Normal manner which is why the bowie reeboks have been in my pinterest board for camp au will for months now bc i think he sees them somewhere and then saves up for months to buy them and then immediately refuses to wear them anywhere out of fear of getting them dirty lol (also peep the byler shoes 👁️👁️) he’ll prioritize comfort over fashion a lot of the time — ergo the infamous hanes six pack of t-shirts from chapter 1 — but when it’s not one million degrees out and when he is not about to get covered in dirt, this is the look he’s going for!
to us acswy mike is also a big proponent of comfort and and practicality but he’s also a grade A dork LOL he has a thing about jackets the way will has a thing about shoes so thrift finds like his beloved leather and denim jackets are a staple for most of the year! (not summer though. obviously.) i think he would love a good crewneck + shorts moment in the spring especially (the “shorty short shorts” are literally the length of the shorts in the middle photo so idk what will was getting so worked up about 🙄) and he owns one million really stupid shirts that he wears all the time that will definitely does not find endearing. also to us mike loves collecting vintage pins so below the cut are some we think he would have been so so so excited to find:

re: derek and will
we see a lot of people screaming crying and throwing up over these two since the timeline went up, and while we don’t want to spoil anything too heavily, we do think it’s important to clarify the following:
derek is older than will by 10 months and a grade above him. there’s nothing predatory or skeevey or inappropriate about their relationship. they meet in a shared art class in high school. they start dating when will is 16 and derek is 17, will turns 17 during their relationship, and derek turns 18 before they ultimately break up. we promise there’s no power imbalance and will is completely fine outside of being upset that a relationship he was in ended. he won’t appear in acswy and will is doing good 💛
we love seeing y’all make theories and we love to mess with y’all, but it was important to nip this one in the bud before it got too out of hand. we have a whole universe we’ve built and it’s important to make references to their past — that said, the companion fics are not our priority, and ultimately, the derek/will drama is not important to acswy, our current focus. all will be revealed eventually, but please be patient, because we’d rather you learn the story from ao3 than our askbox on tumblr :)

you’re right, we haven’t talked about it yet!! will came out to joyce and jonathan (and steve by association) in the fall of 2017, and then to max in the first half of 2018 (before camp). by the end of summer 2018, he had come out to the rest of the party as well!! 💛

hi wayli! thanks for the question!
hopper and joyce liked derek well enough! will spoke very highly of him and he was always very polite when will would have him over and was good at getting will home by curfew. they have no reason to dislike him i think!
jonathan met him a grand total of three (3) times, twice over christmas break 2020 and once at will’s birthday party in 2021. he Observed bc will is his baby brother and he has to make sure that he’s being treated right! from his Observations, derek is treating will right, but jonathan obviously checks in with el a lot since she’s there and will be honest and unbiased.
el didn’t like derek.

how are the party's chopsticks skills. genuine question.
lucas (resident sushi enjoyer) is excellent with them. perfect form. 1000/10.
max (resident gf of said sushi enjoyer and is therefore brought on many sushi dates) is also pretty good with them. 10/10 no complaints.
dustin has terrible form/some physically very complex way of holding them he engineered himself so it’s #cringe but technically very efficient. is capable of picking up the smallest grains of rice with this new method even though it’s a terrible sight to behold. 7/10.
mike does the same thing but more so out of necessity than curiosity so it technically works (“told you. physics!” -mike wheeler, s3) but he defaults to a fork whenever he’s eating in public and not takeout at home just to save face. he can still do it! just won’t be pretty. 6/10.
to me el has those trainer chopsticks with the little grippy thing at the end that holds the two sticks together. uses those a lot bc she never learned how to use them and is too scared to properly figure it out. 5/10 bc her form is impeccable with them but terrible without.
will can only use them to eat things that are Very Large in size (vegetables, pieces of protein, etc). gets frustrated when noodles slip away and rice is out of the question. more than once he can be found stabbing the end of the chopstick into his next bite to bring it to his mouth. gets very flustered when people notice. 5/10 technique, 10/10 adorability
