just wanted to say how happy it makes me to see an older butch living your best life out in the Midwest! I've lived here my whole life and I've always wanted to keep a modest little farm out in the country but I've been too scared to being queer. but seeing you and your critters having a wonderful life fills me with so much hope and happiness. have a lovely day / evening / night, Jen!
I did not choose where I lived carefully. My girlfriend at the time saw the house, loved the house, decided we could afford the house annnd suddenly, we owned a house with 6 acres. She left 6 months later.
It just so happens we got (I got) lucky. We are a short commute to larger cities, the county is rural but spread out and populated with people who work in larger and cities or own local small businesses that employ the local citizens.
My advice is find and area with a doable commute to a larger city because jobs are easier to find, more resources tend to be available and people are less isolated. Make sure wifi, clean water, propane for heating and electrical is readily available on a stable grid, healthy well.
Make sure your fences are well build and your neighbor is not an obvious ass hole. (messy, dogs, livestock or kids running wild). If there is a junk yard in the yard next door or broken fences, run down house and barn, take a pass and keep looking. Age is one thing, clear neglect of his property is a good glance into how he might behave. And if it is close by, those conditions can affect your home and yard. Think rats, fleas, dangerous dogs, sick cats infecting yours or kids getting into things.
Living on gravel is cheaper because suburbanites want hard surface. I am one mile from a highway giving me privacy but that small stretch of gravel made my home more affordable, less affected by traffic (except during harvest) and pretty easy to navigate except in the worst of snow storms.
It is completely possible to be a visible lesbian in a rural setting but learning about the locals and the political climate can help. Don't wait for the perfect plot of land, just one you fall in love with and can afford, then make it your home.
One last piece of advice. If your girlfriend finds a baby goat (or 2) and the guy selling them says they live 4 or 5 years he is lying and try to get her away from them ASAP. :)

Living in the Woods. In the summer we keep a fire break around the house, and I mow with a push mower so as to make sure not to just mow indiscriminately. Native, fire resistant plants are allowed to remain.
We are fighting several invasive plant species right now, and so the mowing is extended to keep them at bay while we figure out how to destroy them without destroying the habitats they are attacking. Ivy, Archangel, Shining Geranium, the Bedamned Buttercups...they and their friends have no place here in our part of the PNW.
We are trying not to put any more poisons into the environment, but may have to utilize some as a last resort, and are working with the Watershed Council in our preservation efforts. You will see tarps in my photos occasionally, covering what otherwise looks to be beautiful woodland. They are there to try and deal with the Shining Geranium that has exploded in our county. Look carefully and you can see some tarping on the right in the bottom photo.
The two side by side photos above that show the slide the beaver are using to come and go from the creek. The Archangel is also highly visible. I have walked up the creek, past our place and up into the Forest and the Archangel is everywhere. Crowding out the native species. I could just cry.

The Church of Galana and Grounds
Prior to the Hellmouth, the church of Galana in Toreguard was a small chapel with grounds so modest, as to be nearly non-existent.
After the rebuilding, it was allocated far larger grounds, in part due to the actions of the resident Abuna, Egrim Shiverstaff, who argued that anyone would be allowed access to the grounds on the NE corner. Today, the gardens cover an area of around 340 acres and are kept by a small team of gnomes and woodlings, lead jointly by Turnips and Oakrose O'Toreguarde.
The main church and associated buildings are most unusual in that they are majoritively grown from wisteria and yew by Abuna Shiverstaff with assistance from Ms O'Toreguarde. There are few stone parts, notably the kitchens, however these are merely an extra precaution as the church is said to be protected from fire and blight by the Green Goddess Herself.
While congregational services are held in the main body of the church, adherents of Galana are encouraged to make use of the grounds for personal worship, particularly the contemplation pools. Each contemplation pool is screened by box hedge and offers a chance for the faithful to commune directly with their Goddess - if She so chooses.
In the spring and autumn, the lawn comes alive with merriment as the church holds feasts for Galana's Holy Day and the Harvest. These are often multi-faith affairs, with adherents of Iatro, Argowen, Aegraven, Istarel, Varantar and Ploughman joining the celebrations.
