Sam Goody stores at Universal CityWalk & Horton Plaza (1993 & 1995)
"The synthesis of three distinct merchandising departments for the new Sam Goody store at the Universal Citywalk exhibits a design of dynamic expression by the Jerde Partnership design team.
The new building sits on the center court of an outdoor shopping mall in Southern California. Representing the three merchandising concepts of Sam Goody, the design pronounces each area through unique and interrelated façades.
The customer enters the Popular Music department through an animated, neon-accented color plaster façade. The entrance to the Classics department and the upstairs Coffee Cafe is between two 40 foot high, 10 foot in diameter Corinthian columns within an interpretative classical façade. A 35 foot high, two-dimensional profile sign depicting King Kong climbing the face of a black and metallic bronze tile building hangs over the entrance to Suncoast Motion Picture Company (video).
The central sales environment is referred to as Backstage, and has the character and atmosphere of a soundstage/studio. The two-story space is defined by upper level catwalks and the destination mezzanine known as the Coffee Cafe. A three-dimensional, walk-through Media Wall features music advertising, photos, oversized images, photo lightboxes, video monitors, projected music videos, reader boards and graphic elements.
Media events are orchestrated throughout the day in an ever-changing environment that depicts the trends of popular music and movies. Weather reports, current events and promotional messages continuously scroll by on the reader boards. In-store performances, CD signings and record promotions bring a sense of "an event" to the store. A live VJ/DJ controls all aspects of the store's music and video media, and interacts with the customers.
On a floating piano-shaped level, the Classics department features a state-of-the-art inventory of classical and jazz selections and creates a controlled, intimate area for the customer with special acoustics, localized sound systems, listening stations and lighting. In the Suncoast Motion Picture Company department, tall video columns accent the environment, supporting the sale of videos and laserdiscs. Interspersed throughout the department are video monitors creating the effect of video confetti.
The Coffee Cafe features a wide variety of interactive listening stations and media experiences. It is intended to be an intimate environment where the customer can pause, enjoy the fare, engage in conversation and take in views of the store as well as the street below through its windows."

I love reading all of your concert reports, so I'll have a try myself for Joker Out in Cologne Kantine at 24th of March.
- I had an EE ticket and arrived around 13 o'clock. There was a queue already, but not too wild (got number 59).
- the weather was quite unsteady, with lots of wind and occasional rain. Lots of umbrellas and rain covers.
- the queuing started around 17:30 o'clock, early entry was allowed in around 18:30 o'clock.
- Sound check was lovely. The boys were in a good mood. Bojan explained about what the procedures of soundcheck. And we got a Nace + Jan jamming session. They played two songs - Dopamin and Proti Toku.
- Sector 5 started as an opening band. They played really well and were energetic on stage. Some people started singing along
- JC Stewart was a total contrast to them, being alone on stage with only his acoustic guitar. His songs were really powerful and full of emotions.
- The JO performance was amazing. They were so energetic, cheerful and seemed to have a great time. Kris seemed to take it a bit slower - he might still be sick
- Looots of Jance action, smirks and heart eyes. Jan leaning his head to Nace's chest, them screaming at each other, Nace nearly kissing Jan. That was a 5 star girl (gn) dinner
- Bojan as a fairy with pink wings, taking his job really seriously. Kris wore a tiny crown with a veil, Jan a fluffy tiara
- During Metulji, they both wore butterfly head crowns and Bojan had his fairy wings back on. He cracked up seeing people do the Macarena during the song, but caught himself again.
- Jan's guitar was somehow out of tune. They stopped the song and he tried fixing it by himself. During the second try, he went rushing to Kiki to exchange guitars.
- Umazane Misli "only" had a few people singing. I remember a really well-sung German version, Russian, Dutch (?) and of course Slovene. Bojan was in the crowd with Vita, encouraging the singers. Sector 5 was in the crowd as well, and the singer
- Jan dancing Macarena during UM and taught it to Nace. Bojan parted the sea crowd and made us take turns in singing UM
- Jure was an absolute beast on the drums. It was so intense
- after the concert we waited outside for the boys to come out. Jan eventually came and took pictures. Jure was hanging out with the people from Sector 5
All in all a wonderful concert experience. Can't wait for Munich tomorrow

The first of two New Year concerts Elvis performed was 1975-76; one night at the Silverdome, Pontiac, Michigan, to a record in-person audience of over 62 000. Newspaper reports of the time conveyed the excitement with headlines, 'Elvis Still Shakes 'em Up', and 'The Legendary Elvis Dazzles New Year's Eve Stadium Crowd'. The $800 000 gross for the night also attracted widespread publicity, at that time a record for a single performance by a solo artist.
Tumblr media
The time of year, and the unprecedented size of the venue, created a number of challenges. The weather was freezing, described by a concertgoer as 'the worst ice-storm ever', and there was an unfamiliar stage rig; Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick suggested that there was no way Elvis could have pre-approved the design which left him isolated on a catwalk several feet above the main stage, making the usual eye-contact and unspoken communication with the band difficult to impossible.
It appears the audience remained generally patient and did not allow the sense of excitement to be undone by ticketing mix-ups, troublesome sound and the freezing temperatures, as well as a seemingly endless pre-programme which on this occasion also included a group named Bodie Mountain Express, a side project of Colonel Parker who was trying to get them signed with RCA.
Early in the show, Elvis tore the seat out of the 'rainfall' jumpsuit and had to leave the stage to change into the 'white V-neck', on his return joking about being a 'quick change artist'.
The Detroit News;
"...Inside the stadium, there were some hassles over tickets. A few fans complained of duplicated seat numbers. Others, most of them $15 stadium floor seat ticket holders who were unprepared for the booming acoustics of the arena, complained about the sound. Others weren't happy about their distance from the stage, but many Elvis fans seemed content to watch 1976 come in through a pair of binoculars...Presley hit the 50-yard line stage - a platform 10 feet off the stadium floor, surrounded by speakers and connected to his dressing room by a 70-yard tunnel - At 11:10 pm; women in glittery dresses and billowing pantsuits joined kids in a rush toward the stage. Lots of screaming. Everything flickered as a generation of flashcubes meets oblivion..."
Tumblr media
It was the most ambitious single performance since Aloha, and once again, after some nervous moments, and in almost impossible conditions, Elvis rose to the challenge.
He talked a little about the show in a lighthearted moment on stage in 1976;

Taylor & Travis Timeline
November 2023 - part 2
November 15 - New Heights Ep 64 airs Travis and Jason Kelce chat about their bye week and discuss what Travis got up to in Argentina, south of the equator (x 42:20). Our bestie Jason draws out what we are all wondering about...
"Sounds like a labyrinth of issues" says Jason.
Oh Travis, she is falling in love with you, and Jason saw the Argentina Night 1 acoustic performance of Labyrinth too.
Referencing the lyric change in Karma;
"How does it feel to officially be 'The guy on the Chiefs'?" Jason teased Travis on the podcast. With a laugh, Travis said that he had "no clue" Taylor planned to mention him during her show. "Well, I might have had a little bit of a clue," he then admitted. "But definitely when I heard it come out of her mouth, [it] still shocked me."  "Yeah, you could tell in the video," Jason responded.  "I was like, 'Oh shh! She really said that,'" Travis marveled.
When Jason notes that Scott Swift is wearing a Chiefs lanyard at the Eras Tour Night 3 he asks...
"What are we doing, Scott? You're gonna let this man's devilish good looks and relationship with your daughter sway you from a lifetime of fandom, Scott? Ridiculous."  Travis further explained, "I might have persuaded him at dinner the night before. When I met him."
Travis commenting on the first Eras Tour he has attended as Taylor's boyfriend..
"The show was even more electric knowing that I had a little bit more to enjoy," he said of watching her perform in Argentina. "Taylor absolutely ripped it. She killed it and it looked like she was having some fun up there."
We love to see the support Travis is showing to our little Indie artist.
We are to expect to see Taylor and Travis spending time together during the Eras tour break according to ET sources (x)

WSJ article: Travis Kelce Opens Up About Taylor Swift and His Life After the NFL; Travis Kelce for the Wall Street Journal (x)
Tumblr media
At the moment, of course, the only thing millions of people want to know about Kelce’s future is whether or not it will include Taylor Swift. And the second thing they’re dying to know is how he and she got together in the first place.
... People have even speculated that Kelce somehow spoke his desire into the universe and just—manifested Swift?
He laughs. “I don’t know if I want to get into all of it,” he says, and then he gets into it, because fountain.
It all started when he tried to meet Swift at her Arrowhead concert in July and got blocked, presumably by security. He then recounted the experience in a charming way on the podcast he does with Jason. Soon after, he says, he received an unbidden assist from inside Team Swift.
“There were definitely people she knew that knew who I was, in her corner [who said]: Yo! Did you know he was coming? I had somebody playing Cupid.” He wasn’t aware at the time, however; the revelation only came later, after he looked down at his phone and got the shock of a lifetime. “She told me exactly what was going on and how I got lucky enough to get her to reach out.”
He lets slip that some of his early helpers were part of the Swift family tree. “She’ll probably hate me for saying this, but…when she came to Arrowhead, they gave her the big locker room as a dressing room, and her little cousins were taking pictures…in front of my locker.”
Understandably, he’s not handing out details about the first date, though he will say that he managed to not be nervous. “When I met her in New York, we had already kind of been talking, so I knew we could have a nice dinner and, like, a conversation, and what goes from there will go from there.”
If anyone was nervous, he adds, it was his core group. “Everybody around me telling me: Don’t f— this up! And me sitting here saying: Yeah—got it.”
As those first heady days unfolded, as news bulletins and cutaways showed Swift cheering Kelce on from his suite, Kelce was uncharacteristically guarded with the media. “That was the biggest thing to me: make sure I don’t say anything that would push Taylor away.”
Likewise, his mother. Donna Kelce still berates herself for how she handled a question about Taylor on the Today show. Trying not to sound too enthusiastic, she came off underwhelmed. Kelce, not wanting his mom to feel bad, immediately phoned her and assured her that she did a super job—adding that her green eyeglasses looked great.
These days, however, with the relationship progressing, Donna feels more at liberty. “I can tell you this,” she says, beaming. “He’s happier than I’ve seen him in a long time…. God bless him, he shot for the stars!”
Kelce seems freer, too. He doesn’t need to be asked about Taylor; he mentions her unreservedly, lavishes praise on her, calls her “hilarious,” “a genius,” notes that they share compatible worldviews, especially when it comes to family and work. “Everybody knows I’m a family guy,” he says. “Her team is her family. Her family does a lot of stuff in terms of the tour, the marketing, being around, so I think she has a lot of those values as well, which is right up my alley.”
One of Kelce’s friends describes a sweet, magical moment, a late-night gathering around Kelce’s firepit. Kelce and Swift looked like two “peas in a pod,” the friend says, and at one point they even burst into a memorable duet of—“Teenage Dirtbag”?
This must be fake
My lips start to shake
How does she know who I am?
Kelce squints into the distance: He’s not sure they were singing…Wheatus. But he allows that his memory might be compromised.
“There was some wine involved, for sure.”
LONG BEFORE MEETING SWIFT, Kelce was just another Swiftie. In some ways he still is. He explains the concept of her concert—“She does it in eras”—as if you live in a yurt in Outer Mongolia. Then he eagerly informs you that the night he attended, he was counting the minutes until she got to 1989. (Both he and Swift were born in 1989.) “ ‘Blank Space’ was one I wanted to hear live for sure. I could make a bad guy good for the weekend. That’s a helluva line!”
More often than not, he says, it was a Swiftian beat, a melody that captivated him. (“She writes catchy jingles.”) But lately he’s all about those lyrics; he’s scrutinized the breakup stuff. What a miracle, he says, the way Swift can turn life into poetry. “I’ve never been a man of words. Being around her, seeing how smart Taylor is, has been f—ing mind-blowing. I’m learning every day.”
Something he might need to learn from Swift: how to handle the attention. Kelce lives in a quiet neighborhood north of downtown—leafy trees, trim lawns, no gates. There’s now a clutch of desperate-looking dudes with cameras stationed on his sidewalk 24/7. He’s followed everywhere, drones buzzing overhead—it’s stressful, more than he lets on, according to one confidante.
“Obviously I’ve never dated anyone with that kind of aura about them…. I’ve never dealt with it,” Kelce says. “But at the same time, I’m not running away from any of it…. The scrutiny she gets, how much she has a magnifying glass on her, every single day, paparazzi outside her house, outside every restaurant she goes to, after every flight she gets off, and she’s just living, enjoying life. When she acts like that I better not be the one acting all strange.”
Asked if he has anything to teach Swift, he looks shy. He can’t think of anything offhand.
Football?
Sure, he says, sounding unsure.
Of course, the thing she probably wants to learn about most is him. While talking to Kelce you realize all at once that the most avid participant in the national scavenger hunt for clues about his character is likely Swift herself.
...
Indeed, Kelce has warned Swift that she’s going to have to reckon with this part of his personality. Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Will Ferrell—they will all be a part of the relationship. “I told Taylor that I have that world, I’ve got to introduce it to her. I let her know: This is my jam right here.”
...
Minutes later, he’s steering past a small airport, where Swift’s plane is often prominently parked these days.  Is it there now, gleaming in the moonlight? The Kelce eras tour is coming to a close. Left unsaid, but palpable: She’s at the house, waiting.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's romance isn't for show — his friends believe it's the "real deal," a source tells PEOPLE.
"Travis' friends think this is the real deal for him,” the insider close to the Kansas City Chiefs star says exclusively. “They're still a little shocked by all of it — that he's dating the Taylor Swift, but they've seen how down to earth she is with his friends and family.”
The source adds that the relationship is “growing” because the NFL tight end, 34, and the music superstar, 33, both have found success in their own worlds — and they continue to appreciate one another's accomplishments.
“They're both really hard workers, and he acknowledges her art is hers, and he has what's his,” the source tells PEOPLE. “He understands the territory their relationship comes with and like he said, isn't letting any of the hoopla impact how they're growing together.”
The source adds, “Their relationship is about the two of them, and he sees Taylor for who she is and vice versa."

Bornean orangutans are one of three orangutan species, all critically endangered. They thrive in carbon-rich peat swamp forests on the Indonesian island of Borneo. These habitats are also the sites of massive wildfires.
Indonesian wildfires in 2015 caused some of the worst fire-driven air pollution ever recorded. The fires were driven by an El Niño climatic cycle, which caused especially dry weather in the region.
Compared to other wildfires, peatland fires smolder underground and produce exceptionally high levels of hazardous gases and particulate matter—a leading cause of global pollution-related deaths and illnesses.
Orangutans are well known as an “indicator species” – one that can serve as a proxy for the health of an ecosystem. Changes in their environments often cause conspicuous changes in the apes’ health and behavior. Frequent and persistent exposure to toxic smoke could have severe consequences for orangutans and other wildlife.
Toxic air pollution also poses serious health and safety risks for researchers. However, remote sensing techniques, such as satellite images, GPS data, and acoustic monitoring, are increasingly popular ways to track wildlife populations and see how creatures respond to changes in their environments.
I have studied the behavior, ecology, and acoustic communication of wild primates in Indonesia since 2005. In a new study, my coauthors and I investigated how wild orangutans in Borneo were affected by toxic emissions from Indonesia’s 2015 peatland wildfires—by studying their voices.
Around the world, wildfires are on the rise. They often produce a thick blanket of haze that contains diverse hazardous gases and particulate matter, or PM. Most recently, smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed the U.S. East Coast and Midwest in June 2023, turning skies orange and triggering public health alerts.
Studies have shown that human health risks from wildfire smoke include respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, systemic inflammation, and premature death. Much less is known about how smoke affects wildlife, but in a pair of studies published in 2021 and 2022, scientists at the California National Primate Research Center reported alarming findings.
After less than two weeks of exposure to high concentrations of particulate matter—in particular, ultrafine particles measuring less than 2.5 microns in diameter, which are known as PM2.5—captive rhesus macaques suffered a spike in pregnancy loss. What’s more, surviving fetuses and infants suffered long-term effects on lung capacity, immune responses, inflammation, cortisol levels, behavior, and memory.
During Indonesia’s 2015 fires, Borneo’s air had particulate matter concentrations nearly an order of magnitude higher than the levels in these studies. This made the potential implications for people and wildlife who gasped through Indonesia’s wildfire smoke for nearly two months extremely worrying.
I was studying wild orangutans in the forests of Indonesian Borneo when the 2015 fires started. My colleagues and I at the Tuanan Orangutan Research Station tracked local fires and patrolled nearby hot spots to assess the risk of fire spreading to our research area.
Wearing N95 masks, we continued to monitor orangutans in hopes of learning how the animals were coping with encroaching fires and thick smoke. A few weeks into the fire season, I noticed a difference in the sound of the males’ “long call,” which was the focus of my research.
Long calls are booming vocalizations that can be heard over distances of more than half a mile (1 kilometer). Orangutans are semi-solitary and live in dispersed communities, so these calls serve an important social role. Adult males make them to advertise their prowess to listening females in the area and to scare off any eavesdropping rival males. A couple of weeks after the smoke had appeared, I thought these males sounded raggedy—a little like humans who smoke a lot.
We observed the orangutans for 44 days during the fires, until large blazes encroached on our study area. At that point, we stopped the study to help extinguish the blazes with local firefighting teams and other government and nonprofit groups. Fires burned in our study area for three weeks.
Using data that we collected before, during, and after the fires, I led an analysis of this Bornean orangutan population’s behavior and health. My coauthors and I found that in the weeks after the fires, the apes reduced their activities—resting more and traveling shorter distances—and consumed more calories than normal.
But although they were eating more and moving less, we found by collecting and testing the apes’ urine that they were still burning stored fat—a sign that they somehow were using up more energy. We hypothesized that the cause might be inflammation—the swelling, fever, pain, and fatigue that human and animal bodies experience in response to infection or injury.
Studies have shown that when humans are exposed to particulate matter, they can experience inflammation, both in their respiratory tracts and throughout their bodies. We wanted to know whether inhaling wildfire smoke would cause vocal changes in orangutans, just as inhaling cigarette smoke does in humans.
For this study, my coauthors and I carefully analyzed more than 100 sound recordings of four male orangutans that we followed before and during the fires to measure their vocal responses to wildfire smoke. Research has shown that a suite of vocal features—including pitch, vocal harshness or hoarseness, and shaky voice—reflects the underlying health and condition of both human and nonhuman animals. We were looking for acoustic clues about how this toxic air might be affecting the orangutans.
During the fires and for several weeks after the smoke cleared, these males called less frequently than usual. Normally, orangutans call about six times a day. But during the fires, their call rate was cut in half. Their voices dropped in pitch, showing more vocal harshness and irregularities.
Collectively, these features of vocal quality have been linked to inflammation, stress, and disease—including COVID-19—in human and nonhuman animals.
Increasingly frequent and prolonged exposure to toxic smoke could have severe consequences for orangutans and other animals. Our research highlights the urgent need to understand the long-term and far-ranging effects of peatland fires in Indonesia, which is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.
By uncovering the linkages between acoustic, behavioral, and energetic shifts in orangutans, our study highlights a way for scientists and wildlife managers to safely monitor the health of orangutans and other animals. Using passive acoustic monitoring to study vocally active indicator species, like orangutans, could unlock critical insights into wildfire smoke’s effects on wildlife populations worldwide.

316: Toto Bissainthe // Chante Haïti
Tumblr media
Chante Haïti Toto Bissainthe 1977, Arion
“These songs are mostly slave songs taken from the Vodou cult. They speak of the quotidian, of the suffering of exile, and the desire of Africa, not as a geographical place but as a mythical land of freedom. They express their resistance and their refusal: resistance to the colonizer, refusal of his politics, of his religion, of his culture, of his language.”
So begins Toto Bissainthe’s statement on the rear of Chante Haïti, her 1977 collaboration with a small combo of Antillean folk and French jazz musicians: vocalists Marie-Claude Benoît and Mariann Mathéus; percussionists Akonio Dolo and Mino Cinélu (Miles Davis, Weather Report, Gong); Patrice Cinélu on acoustic guitar; and Beb Guérin on the double bass. The songs indeed fuse the Vodou ritual of her native Haiti with the European avant garde sounds of her adopted milieu of Paris, where she had moved to pursue acting and found herself a de facto exile due to the political situation back home. Bissainthe had become a prominent figure in the French theatre, performing in new plays by Beckett and Genet and co-founding Les Griots, France’s first Black theatre company; by the late ‘70s, she was an acclaimed recording artist to boot. Her accomplishments made her a prominent figure in the Haitian diaspora and her activist streak is apparent throughout Chante Haïti, explicitly linking the grief and yearning for liberation in these traditional ceremonials with the country’s contemporary struggles.
Like many songs on the album, the Creole words of opener “Soley danmbalab” mourn the people's estrangement from Mother Africa, a crossing which can neither be reversed or repeated. It begins like a field recording, Bissainthe’s soulful, Miriam Makeba-esque voice set to a chorus of rattles and bells and gurgling masculine whispers. As the song develops, her melody wends like a stream through the dense jungle of percussion, dissonant bass, and counterpoint chanting. Eventually, Mino Cinélu’s arrangement becomes more free, the male chorus imploring the Oungan (a male Vodou priest) to intercede with the creator on the people’s behalf as the tune breaks down into an increasingly abstract bass and drum interplay, while the three female singers exchange birdlike vocal improvisations.
youtube
“Ibo Ogoun (Variations)” is even wilder, evoking a trance ritual, the spirits speaking in many tongues through the celebrants as they seek to summon Ogun, God of Iron and War, to lead the battle of liberation. One of the male percussionists times his tanbou beat so that it hits just as he sings certain notes, creating the illusion that he voice has suddenly lurched down an octave for a moment, almost like a DJ freaking a vocal sample. Bissainthe, Mathéus, and Benoît match the intense drumming with some crazy syncopations, sometimes talking, sometimes hissing and whispering, sometimes wailing and ululating.
Most of the album takes on a more meditative tact, anchored by Guérin’s plangent double bass. On the smoky “Papadanbalab,” an entreaty to the serpent creator Damballa to bear witness to the penury of his people, Bissainthe sways over a slinky jazz bass line, Patrice Cinélu adding mellow acoustic fusion licks. The song seems like a brief stopover in a Parisian club. But even the less overtly intense tracks pack plenty of musical interest. “Lamize pa dous” has this hypnotic rhythm that sounds exactly like a micro house beat—in fact, the first thing it made me think of was Ricardo Villalobos’ Alcachofa, or Animal Collective at their campfire ravingest. The song is about the moment of surrender to death, the winnowing of time represented by water encroaching on all sides, the realization too late that “we spend our lives trying to fill the sea with stones.”
Listening to a record like this, especially in light of Bissainthe’s note on the back excoriating the colonialist ethnographer who reduces Haitian folklore to “excitement and violence,” requires at least a smidgen of awareness from the white listener that Chante Haïti is not intended for them. The traditions it engages with are of deep spiritual significance to many Haitians, both in the ‘70s and today. But for those inside and outside the culture who are willing to approach it with respect, Chante Haïti is a fascinating fusion of Antillean and European musics, and a peek into a profound and secret history.

Long-period oscillations control the Sun’s differential rotation
The interior of the Sun does not rotate at the same rate at all latitudes. The physical origin of this differential rotation is not fully understood. A team of scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Germany has made a ground-breaking discovery. As the team reports today in the journal Science Advances, the long-period solar oscillations discovered by MPS scientists in 2021 play a crucial role in controlling the Sun’s rotational pattern. The long-period oscillations are analogous to the baroclinically unstable waves in Earth’s atmosphere that shape the weather. In the Sun, these oscillations carry heat from the slightly hotter poles to the slightly cooler equator. To obtain their new results, the scientists interpreted observations from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory using cutting-edge numerical simulations of the solar interior. They found that the difference in temperature between the poles and the equator is about seven degrees.
The Sun’s differential rotation pattern has puzzled scientists for decades: while the poles rotate with a period of approximately 34 days, mid-latitudes rotate faster and the equatorial region requires only approximately 24 days for a full rotation. In addition, in past years advances in helioseismology, i.e. probing the solar interior with the help of solar acoustic waves, have established that this rotational profile is nearly constant throughout the entire convection zone. This layer of the Sun stretches from a depth of approximately 200 000 kilometers to the visible solar surface and is home to violent upheavals of hot plasma which play a crucial role in driving solar magnetism and activity.
While theoretical models have long postulated a slight temperature difference between solar poles and equator to maintain the Sun’s rotational pattern, it has proven notoriously difficult to measure. After all, observations have to “look through” the background of the Sun’s deep interior which measures up to million degrees in temperature. However, as the researchers from MPS show, it is now possible to determine the temperature difference from the observations of the long-period oscillations of the Sun.
In their analysis of observational data obtained by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory from 2017 to 2021, the scientists turned to global solar oscillations with long periods that can be discerned as swirling motions at the solar surface. Scientists from MPS reported their discovery of these inertial oscillations three years ago. Among these observed modes, the high-latitude modes with velocities of up to 70 km per hour, proved to be especially influential.
To study the nonlinear nature of these high-latitude oscillations, a set of three-dimensional numerical simulations was conducted. In their simulations, the high-latitude oscillations carry heat from the solar poles to the equator, which limits the temperature difference between the Sun’s poles and the equator to less than seven degrees. “This very small temperature difference between the poles and the equator controls the angular momentum balance in the Sun and thus is an important feedback mechanism for the Sun’s global dynamics” says MPS Director Prof. Dr. Laurent Gizon.
In their simulations, the researchers for the first time described the crucial processes in a fully three-dimensional model. Former endeavors had been limited to two-dimensional approaches that assumed the symmetry about the Sun’s rotation axis. “Matching the nonlinear simulations to the observations allowed us to understand the physics of the long-period oscillations and their role in controlling the Sun’s differential rotation”, says MPS postdoc and the lead author of the study, Dr. Yuto Bekki.
The solar high-latitude oscillations are driven by a temperature gradient in a similar way to extratropical cyclones on the Earth. The physics is similar, though the details are different: “In the Sun, the solar pole is about seven degrees hotter than equator and this is enough to drive flows of about 70 kilometers per hour over a large fraction of the Sun. The process is somewhat similar to the driving of cyclones”, says MPS scientist Dr. Robert Cameron.
Probing the physics of the Sun’s deep interior is difficult. This study is important as it shows that the long-period oscillations of the Sun are not only useful probes of the solar interior, but that they play an active role in the way the Sun works. Future work, which will be carried out in the context of the ERC Synergy Grant WHOLESUN and the DFG Collaborative Research Center 1456 Mathematics of Experiments, will be aimed at better understanding the role of these oscillations and their diagnostic potential.

morning of 6/28 update
hello i haven't slept in some time. i have had an intense bout of writers block and have been dealing with some things and so very little to report overall
i have moved all of my recording equipment out of my bedroom and into a storage room across the hall and have been recording in here for a bit. playing with lighting & video elements since i have felt uninspired musically. pic related
Tumblr media
most of my time in here has been dedicated to recording some shitty covers and rewriting my favorite song from the original batch of demos, currently titled "Moths Landing"
this morning i am re recording it again-- stripping back a lot of the electronic synthy stuff i was using and just taking it acoustically again, similar to the way i recorded the first demo (which is apparently almost a year old. crazy)
Tumblr media
anyways this version i am recording feels purer than the electric version i had been stuck on for a while. feels more like carnival avenue. though my mind changes like the weather so we will have to see. i will release a single to you all some time soon, i promise. mayb a music video too. who knows. and more updates from the storage room hopefully. see you soon

Yuve Yuve Yu, Propaganda, and Klimt - a Friday List
Welcome to the third Friday in June! Weather-wise we have had a bit of an eventful week for June, check out this hail that fell just northeast of us last night. I think that this was our third hailstorm this year, the local roofing companies are staying busy. Happy Father’s Day to all of the fathers! I am incredibly grateful for my own.
As always I hope that you have something enjoyable and or restful planned for your weekend. Enjoy this Friday list and a few pictures at the end!
Bat acts like a dog, demands belly rubs - YouTube, I have been fascinated with Flying Foxes for the last several years. And Eddie is a good example of why, he’s clever and strong with lots of personality.
Stormy Weather in color - The Nicholas Brothers and Cab Calloway | Colorized with DeOldify - YouTube, Fayard and Harold were incredible self-taught dancers. The sheer energy and strength that it takes to dance how they danced matched with an incredible preciseness is amazing to watch. In this clip they are dancing to Cab Calloway and his orchestra playing “Jumpin’ Jive.” Two of my favorite things….incredible dancing along with incredible music!
VIVALDI SUMMER - SYMPHONIACS - Violin Concerto In G Minor, Rv 315 III. Presto (The Four Seasons) - YouTube, I am working to break my record of the use of the word “incredible.” But The Four Seasons is such an incredible piece of music and you don’t even have to enjoy Classical music to appreciate its value. The Symphoniacs do such a great version of Summer here, so enjoyable.
The Hu - Yuve Yuve Yu - Live Acoustic at the Mongolian Embassy, Paris, France - YouTube, this was filmed after The HU was nominated as an Artist for Peace by UNESCO. Their use of the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle) mixed with some metal is a beautiful mix of old and new.
The HU - Yuve Yuve Yu (Official Music Video) - YouTube, I am sure that I have shared this one before but it’s worth resharing. It’s best if played with earbuds in and volume perhaps a bit higher than should be for the health of ones ears.
Facts don’t change minds: a case for the virtues of propaganda | Psyche Ideas, I learned a few new things reading this article which is often a very good thing. A good example of the use of positive propaganda.
The 12 Best Wireless Earbuds of 2023 – Robb Report, I personally prefer the Beats earbuds for quality of sound yet if I had an extra $300 to spare I would snatch up the Bose QuietComfort earbuds in a second!
A Brief Overview of Pre-Raphaelite Art - Invaluable, this was an enjoyable, short  read on Pre-Raphaelite art, specifically its origins. Waterhouse has been one of my favorite artists since I was in high school. I had a print of the  Lady of Shalott for years, Boreas is my second favorite.
Klimt’s Last Portrait Expected to Sell for Over $80 M. at Sotheby’s – ARTnews.com, this is so beyond my understanding. At the same time, if I had the money I would for sure pay that amount to have an original Klimt. It is such a beautiful piece and I love the colors and symbols that he used.

Song Review: The Kitchen Dwellers feat. Lindsay Lou - “They Love Each Other”
If drugs are required to make Grateful Dead music make sense - and they are not - then break out the acid-spiked moonshine for the Kitchen Dwellers and Lindsay Lou’s rendition of “They Love Each Other.”
It’s bluegrass, yes. But it sways in a Dead way with Lou going old-school by retrieving long-abandoned lyrics to sing after an instrumental break featuring a banjo solo over mandolin, acoustic guitar and upright bass.
I heard your news report/you know you’re fallin’ short/pretty soon, they won’t trust you for the weather, she intones before kicking her voice into high gear and making it crack in all the right places.
Recorded live backstage before a gig in Montana, it’s the kind of clip that helps ensure Dead music will have a long, healthy life.

Emerging Trends in Commercial Construction - Innovations Shaping the Industry with Ted Vitale (NJ)
As construction firms grapple with an acute labor shortage, they must employ employee retention and recruitment strategies that include competitive salaries and training programs to retain staff.
Construction technology is also rapidly progressing. Some emerging trends include 3D printing, drone use for construction projects, and connectivity between projects. Theodore Vitale Wall
Modular and Prefabrication
With technology reshaping commercial construction trends, modular and prefabrication methods are revolutionizing this sector. These construction methods offer more streamlined project schedules, less energy-intensive materials, and greater design freedom.
Ted Vitale (NJ) asserts that modular construction enables contractors to prefabricate sections of buildings off-site before transporting them for installation, cutting overall project timelines by 20-50% and helping avoid weather delays or any interruptions that could stall its progress. A study conducted by SmartMarket showed that over 88% of general contractors surveyed reported positive effects on their schedules from modular construction.
Study findings showed that modular projects were also more cost-effective than traditional on-site construction, as the prefabrication process allows for enhanced quality control as each assembly is carefully inspected by trained staff in a controlled manufacturing environment. Furthermore, multiple units could be assembled at once for faster construction efficiency and seamless delivery to the site.
Contrary to popular perceptions, modular construction does not limit design flexibility and can produce a range of aesthetically pleasing buildings. Furthermore, factory settings enable more sustainable practices, including using recycled materials and energy-efficient equipment.
Smart Building Technology
Construction technology that can manage building systems, optimize energy use, enhance safety, and promote communication between employees and contractors is becoming increasingly prevalent. Recent advances include innovative security systems that track movement and facial recognition and intelligent lighting that adapts to occupancy rates - among other tools that make construction technology genuinely groundbreaking.
Intelligent building technologies also provide greater interoperability between systems, tailored end-to-end experiences for people using them, and increasing flexibility of design options for architects and designers. For example, intelligent systems that connect through mesh networks enable buildings to avoid fixed cabling routes for increased flexibility from designers and more excellent reliability and scalability than traditional wireless networks. Theodore Vitale Petore
Another trend in construction industry design is integrating biophilic design principles into buildings and structures. This concept taps into our natural connection to nature to create spaces that promote well-being, productivity, and overall satisfaction - such as using natural lighting sources such as sun rays including greenery in interior design elements of a building, or including acoustic elements in the process.
Ted Vitale (NJ) illustrates that design-build projects have gained popularity as an efficient means of streamlining construction processes and saving money by having one firm take responsibility for all architectural, general contractor, and construction worker roles - for smoother communications, more organized feedback systems, and organic teamwork between all involved parties. Theodore Vitale Monmouth County
Wearable Technology
Innovative technology has become an increasingly popular trend in commercial construction. Managers and supervisors are utilizing devices designed to monitor workers as a preventative measure, helping prevent workplace accidents while guaranteeing everyone's safety on site.
Smart helmets with sensors can detect when wearers become overexerted and help them take a break to prevent fatigue, helping avoid accidents on-site and increase worker productivity. Wearables enable faster decision-making processes by connecting team members without using walkie-talkies or radios; such devices allow instantaneous decision-making without costly walkie-talkies and radios.
These tools can also record workers' locations should an accident occur, enabling quick rescue and treatment of victims. Furthermore, these innovative devices help automate data collection to reduce time management spent on headcount and safety checks while providing preventative maintenance, reducing equipment downtime, and guaranteeing everything works as it should.
Ted Vitale (NJ) highlights that Virtual reality and 3D printing technologies are also revolutionizing commercial construction, providing thoughtful decision-making support, streamlining processes, and improving accuracy - leading to an increase in efficiency, reduced cost and time expenditure, better product quality, and the addition of younger talent into construction teams - and shaping its sustainable future.
Artificial Intelligence
AI in commercial construction enhances projects' efficiency, safety, and quality while helping companies anticipate and address potential risks. Ted Vitale (NJ) accentuates that artificial intelligence tools can automate estimation procedures, connect workers in real-time, and track project progress while assisting managers in staying abreast of progress.
Several AI-based solutions on the market help companies manage construction projects more efficiently. Natural language processing - an aspect of artificial intelligence that interprets human languages - makes data extraction from two-dimensional construction plans such as PDF files more accessible, thus saving resources and eliminating manual data entry processes.
Ted Vitale (NJ) elucidates that AI-powered sensors and cameras used on construction sites to monitor real-time compliance with industry regulations are another example of technology helping construction firms save money by avoiding expensive repairs due to equipment failure and alerting them of issues before they worsen. This technology saves companies money while helping avoid costly equipment repairs due to breakdown and warns them of potential problems that need addressing before worsening occurs.
Some companies are even employing robots in the field to improve worker productivity and safety, such as autonomous bulldozers that can prepare job sites according to specific specifications without human input; these vehicles also help prevent accidents by sensing heat, wind, or noise that might threaten worker well-being; virtual reality training helps workers learn new techniques or practice procedures without placing themselves in dangerous environments.

The Nightingale Of Iran: A Podcast About Identity, Belonging, And Music
Tumblr media
What if I told you that a Jewish singer was a national celebrity in the nation of Iran? You'd probably scoff and head to a fact-checking service to confirm my inaccuracy. With the socio-political and religious events in the 40 years, you'd be right in answering, "impossible"
However, politics is like the weather in its capriciousness and shifting winds. Back in the 1950s, Tehran under the Shah was a cultural center of the world and called the Paris of the Middle East.
It was a golden age for Jews in Iran. In the 1950s, a religious Jew – Younes Dardashti – became a national celebrity, singing at the Shah’s palace and on the radio. In the 1960s, his son Farid became a teen idol on TV. They were beloved by Iranian Muslims.
Younes Dardashti was so famous that he was known as The Nightingale Of Iran. The nightingale is the official national bird of Iran. In medieval Persian literature, the nightingale's enjoyable song has made it a symbol of the lover who is eloquent, passionate, and doomed to love in vain. In Persian poetry, the object of the nightingale's affections is the rose, which embodies both the perfection of earthly beauty and the arrogance of that perfection.
But at the height of their fame, Younes Dardashti and his Farid left the country. Why? Why would a revered entertainer and his teen idol son leave a nation? Would Taylor Swift bolt from the U.S. for Sweden or France? Not without Travis Kelce!
It has always been a mystery to host Danielle Dardashti and her sister Galeet. Danielle and Galeet are the granddaughters of The Nightingale Of Iran.
Why did their family leave Iran at the height of their fame? Now, in an enthralling documentary podcast series, the sisters reveal painful secrets unspoken for generations. I've listened to a pre-release of the first episode, and I can promise this. The Nightingale of Iran is a story that will resonate with listeners because every family has secrets that are buried.
As Danielle Dardashti says in the first episode, "It's a story about identity, belonging, and music." Their investigation promises to reveal painful secrets unspoken for generations.
Danielle Dardashti is an Emmy Award winner and Moth StorySLAM champion. She runs dash. - a consultancy that helps companies tell stories. She's a former on-air TV reporter, a documentary producer, and is co-author of the Jewish Family Fun Book series. Danielle was a fellow in the 2023 Digital Storytellers Lab.
Galeet is the leader and vocalist of the edgy all-female Mizrahi band Divahn, Dardashti’s “sultry delivery spans international styles and clings to listeners long after the last round of applause,” according to The Jerusalem Report.
Galeet's acoustic/electronic solo project The Naming, supported by a Six Points Fellowship and a Hadassah-Brandeis Institute Fellowship, draws inspiration from the musical and cultural landscapes of the Middle East and some of the provocative yet unsung Biblical women who lived there. The Huffington Post called the album "a heart-stopping effort." The Naming album launched in September 2010. Galeet also holds a Ph.D. in anthropology, specializing in cultural politics and contemporary Middle Eastern/Arab music in Israel. She is currently Assistant Professor of Jewish Music and Musician-in-Residence at the Jewish Theological Seminary, and she has published widely on her work. She offers residencies, lectures, and workshops on her artistic and academic work.
Danielle is clearly an excellent narrator, and, in the first episode, she tells her family's story with patience, a slowly building crescendo of mystery, family secrets, and political and religious upheaval.
At one point in the first episode, Danielle says to listeners, "I feel as if we are interrogating our parents." As the daughters question their parents about the family's past, their parents become increasingly uncomfortable with the questions and the topic.
Check out The Nightingale Of Iran. It's a superbly crafted podcast documentary that focuses on a family and its long held secrets, while balancing a tale of geopolitical forces that flow like a hidden current through the crevasses of culture and art.
It's an exploration by two women, Danielle Dardashti and her sister Galeet, of their family roots, mysteries, and events left unspoken for decades.

The weather was freezing, described by a concertgoer as 'the worst ice-storm ever', and there was an unfamiliar stage rig; Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick suggested that there was no way Elvis could have pre-approved the design which left him isolated on a catwalk several feet above the main stage, making the usual eye-contact and unspoken communication with the band impossible.
The Detroit News;
Early in the show, Elvis tore the seat out of the 'rainfall' jumpsuit and had to leave the stage to change into the 'white V-neck', on his return joking about being a 'quick change artist'.
It was the most ambitious single performance since Aloha, and once again, after some nervous moments, and in almost impossible conditions, Elvis rose to the challenge.
The Pontiac Silverdome was demolished in 2018.

ALMOST COUCH TOUR: RACHEL Z with Jeremy Pelt, Steve Wilson, Jonathan Toscano, and Ben Perowsky, SMALL’S JAZZ CLUB, 22 SEPTEMBER 2023, both sets
I went almost a week without streaming even a set before having a whole subdued day to myself. To get back into it, I returned to the other, first, night of the last thing I saw, RACHEL Z’s Wayne Shorter tribute. What I saw before was the second night without Jeremy Pelt who was, I thought, a big part of why I wanted to see the gig. I didn’t know about the Shorter angle going in and getting to know alto/soprano player Steve Wilson better helped me place his melodic, linear playing (not Parker, not Konitz) in this context. So this first night allowed me to hear Pelt’s contribution.
It was also a chance to hear basically the same tunes again but with different stories. This time she closed the second set with a Depeche Mode tune mashed up with Footprints rather than the Saturday first set closer of a Coldplay song and instead of Fall from Nefertiti. Otherwise it was that same mix of Witch Hunt (written in the ‘50s when Shorter thought he was going to be drafted into the Army during the Korean War), Iris, and ESP from the ‘60s recordings. Also in the first set was The Three Marias, leading to a second set of ‘80s tunes which I didn’t know—On the Milky Way Express and Over Shadow Hill Way.
Having Pelt along was illuminating and worth the reprise. I have seen him mostly in drummerless trios at Mezzrow’s which are tasteful and intimate, but also with Wayne Escoffery and Victor Gould in the Black Arts Collective where he shows that he can bring muscularity too. Here he was thoroughly himself while inhabiting tunes that Freddie Hubbard mostly but Miles Davis too put their stamp on. One couldn’t help but hear the echoes. It also served as a reminder that Shorter heard the trumpet in his own music.
Z’s own tunes, like the latter day popular tunes she covers, also illuminate Shorter’s own later work—they are riffy and rhythmic but with lots of rich space for soloists. She is not a deep as the maestro, but who is? They are fine tunes, period. This made the second set in particular a showcase for drummer Ben Perowsky to embellish and make multidimensional the grooves in Shorter’s later music. Wholly acoustic, but a chance to remember that behind the bombast and orchestration of Joe Zawinul’s bank of keyboards Weather Report was a jazz band that advanced the music.
These were valuable sets and I am back to the music.
