Which Wordgirl villain would win in a fight?

Rules: No powers or gadgets. Just fists. The only exceptions are if their powers/gadgets are literally part of their bodies. It'll make sense when we get to the fight.

Ranking under the cut because it's a very long post

30. Amazing Rope Guy

Yeah this is a surprise to literally no one. He is considered probably the most pathetic villain in the entire city, and there are characters with absolutely no powers who beat him.

Pretty much every other villain is capable of escaping jail. He isn't. In The Rise of Miss Power and A World Without Wordgirl, he is seen stuck in jail while every other villain escapes or is out and about.

His only other ability other than his mediocre rope skills is his ability to imitate, but that doesn't really help him in a fighting setting.

29. Timmy Tim-Bo

Pretty much as pathetic as Amazing Rope Guy in a fighting setting. I was debating whether or not he should be above or below ARG, but for now i'm leaving him here.

I honestly don't have much to say about him. He most likely passes out mid battle. The only reason he's above ARG is because ARG is more likely to tie himself up in the rope.

28. Royal Dandy

While Royal Dandy is able to shoot paint from his hands and heal any injuries by just painting himself back up, his major disadvantage is that he's a Lady Redundant Woman clone.

Though he's clearly not the same as the other clones, he's still a clone. Lady Redundant Woman is completely capable of just zapping him out of existence.

On top of that, pretty sure he's canonically dead?-

27. Tobey

Some of you may be confused by this, but keep in mind, no gadgets are allowed in this fight. Only fists or any physical enhancements.

Without his 'row-bits,' Tobey is a literal child with zero athletic skills

26. The Coach

This dude is pathetic and sad and is the size of a child. His size may give him an advantage in dodging, but otherwise that's it.

25. Glen Furlblam

So Glen not only doesn't have any superpowers, but he's not very athletic or successful in general.

On top of that, he's a thin dude, so i doubt he'd have a chance at dog piling anyone.

24. Captain Tangent

That is a child with a hook hand he isn't allowed to use. His only advantage is his weight.

23. Victoria Best

Another literal child with zero super powers. (Ok, i get she has the laser eye.. telekinesis... thing, but that doesn't really do much damage)

The only reason she's above Tobey is because of her desire to be the best. If she's the 'best' at everything, that means her parents most likely signed her up for several martial arts, that she could be at least ok at.

22. Brent

Brent is in a similar situation as Tangent, with his only advantage being his weight. Since he is an adult, he has a greater advantage.

21. Mr Big

Mr Big also doesn't have any superpowers and is pretty much in the same boat as Brent. I'd say he's pretty equal to Brent really.

20. Reason

Reason doesn't have any superpowers, but he probably could create reasonable deductions on how to survive somewhat in a fight. Overall, he's just highly outclassed by everyone else.

19. Hal Hardbargain

This guy is really hard to place. I haven't watched a single episode he has a speaking role in, but based on what I have seen, despite the mechanical arm giving him a strength boost, his age and lack of any other powers probably leads to his ass getting kicked.

18. Invisi-Bill

First exception to the 'no powers' rule. The only reason he is exempt from the rule is because his power is a physical part of him.

Despite that, Invisi-Bill doesn't have much of an advantage. Sure he can stay out of harm's way for however long he's willing to stay invisible, but he is a thin guy with no other fighting ability and could easily be knocked out.

17. Big Left Hand Guy

Dude could murder with that hand.... if he knew how to fight. While he could smack someone with his hand, he doesn't have much fighting skill outside of it.

16. Chuck

Once again, no athletic strength. Just the weight advantage.

15. Dr Two Brains

Since there are no gadgets allowed, the doc is in a bit of trouble. However, he's seen to be incredibly quick, even avoiding Wordgirl in some scenes. I feel he can outrun many of the characters, but wouldn't really be able to throw a punch.

14. Ms Question

Kinda the same reasoning as Two Brains, but she could maybe throw a punch. I'm debating whether I should put her below him.

13. Kid Potato

He's an old guy who's not allowed to use his superpowers. Once again, his only advantage is weight.

12. The Butcher

All the same reasoning as his dad, except he's younger, so he's in slightly better shape.

11. Seymour

*deep inhale*

....Ok. Listen.

This mf INFURIATES me when it comes to this. For three reasons.

#1: The Rise of Miss Power

Assuming that every villain was locked away in the jail, that means every villain was able to escape (except for ARG). This includes Seymour which means Seymour either 1. Had someone else break him out or 2. Somehow broke out of the cell on his own.

#2:

Ok, this one may be a bit of a stretch, but it's been on my mind. In 'Tell Her What She's Won!,' Seymour locks Wordgirl and Huggy in a circular labyrinth room that he has control over via controls.

And in that room, Seymour causes the room to spin, flinging Wordgirl and Huggy into the walls.

I'm running off the assumption that in this scene, Wordgirl and Huggy hit the wall (including Huggy later bouncing off the wall in the cupcake game), and the wall doesn't break.

Later in the episode, not only does Seymour manage to stay standing while being tied up in metal bars, but he KICKS THE WALL DOWN???

How come he was able to break down the wall with his leg alone when two superpowered aliens weren't??

#3:

In "Who Wants to Get Rid of Wordgirl?" not only does he challenge Nocan the Contrarian to a duel, but he somehow holds his own in the fight

Admittedly, the fight doesn't last long, so maybe Nocan could've eventually bodied him, but that's still impressive considering Seymour's lack of muscle.

On top of that, he's fighting Nocan ONE HANDED, while Nocan is holding his own sword with two hands.

TL;DR: Seymour just may have the craziest sleeper build of the entire WG cast/hj

10. Lady Redundant Woman

This is another case of a character breaking the no superpowers rule. However, she can't be any higher than this. While she could dogpile people with her clones, she isn't very physically fit and wouldn't be able to do much damage. Plus, her clones aren't unlimited, and so once she runs out, she's in trouble. She's above Seymour because she actually has a superpower.

9. Granny May

Granny May without her super suit is actually pretty agile and quick and would most likely be able to do a good chunk of damage. However, I feel as though there is someone on this list who matches her talent, but has the advantage because of Granny May's age.

8. Leslie

Leslie is an incredibly intelligent karate master several extra skills. I'm kinda sad she can't be placed any higher, because her major disadvantage is that she has zero superpowers. That being said, she's no slouch, as she's been seen to overpower Wordgirl on several occasions.

7. Rhyme

I had to double check Rhyme's wiki because I was so close to placing her really low on the list for some reason. She's another character who breaks the no superpowers rule. Even without her ice-breath, she's got super speed and super strength, which I think just helps her defeat Leslie.

6. The Whammer

Even without his whams, Whammer is actually pretty fit, as he is scene pulling two cars using his waist alone (I forgot what episode, but it's the Coach's debut)

5. Nocan

Nocan and the Whammer are on pretty equal footing, but I think Nocan could be slightly stronger than the Whammer.

4. Eileen

This may seem like pretty high placing for a child, but keep in mind, Eileen is basically if Tobey was one of his robots (meaning she once again breaks the powers rule). She can do pretty intense damage, uprooting trees, severely damaging buildings, and much more.

3. Maria

Maria is a being made from pure electricity. How are you meant to punch her? She does have some weaknesses, which is why she isn't any higher.

2. Miss Power

Yeah this is a surprise to literally no one most likely. She's physically stronger than Wordgirl and all of the other villains, plus she also has super strength and super speed.

But who's above her?

The Learnerer

Ok. Listen. The implications of this guy's super suit makes him pretty insane. He's able to learn anything from seeing it once. It's no wonder why he only showed up in about 3 episodes, because he's way too overpowered. He'll be able to avoid anyone's attacks and fight back. Eventually, he'll learn all of Miss Power's tactics, and wipe the floor with her. This also makes him have the most unique exception to the no superpowers or gadgets rule.

TL;DR: The character voiced by Weird Al-Motherfucking-Yankovic is the strongest character in Wordgirl.

Support your favorite creative(s) this season!

So, it’s the holiday season (for values of holiday which can be anything you care to celebrate during the winter months) and you would like to support your favorite creative(s). What are some good ways to do that?

Tell the world about them

If someone is a favorite of yours, there’s a good chance that you know someone else who will enjoy their work. Signal boost the creative’s posts. Create your own post with links to their work. Showcase some of your favorite pieces of theirs with a snippet and a link to the original. Talk about why you love the work (trust me, your favorite creative will love to hear this just as much as your friends will appreciate finding out about something new).

Important side note which I know you know but it bears repeating: please reblog and link to your favorite creative’s posts; do not repost their material. Reposting might sound like a great way to show off what the creative does, but it doesn’t help anyone find them. Please be considerate.

Post reviews of their work

Instructions for this depends on what type of creative you are following. If they are a writer, leave a review on Goodreads, Storygraph, Amazon, B&N, whatever platform you choose. Positive reviews are how writers get discovered.

If your creative is an artist and has a platform where they offer commissions, leave a review there if appropriate. Give them five stars. Help your creative climb the ranks from unknown to well-reviewed!

Follow them on social media

If your creative has a list of social media accounts, follow them! This gives you a better chance to help signal boost their cool stuff (as well as hearing about it when they post!). It also gives you a chance to interact, and to see what they’re like when they aren’t creating. If you like their creations, you might have other things in common.

Does your creative have a newsletter? Subscribe! You can even forward copies to your friends if there’s something really cool you want to share. A Patreon? Check to see if they have free material posted. Many Patreons allow people to follow at a free level, and while there might be paywall-locked material, there might be unlocked material as well.

Social media is wide and varied these days, with everything from Bluesky and Mastodon, to old-school Facebook pages, to even older-school platforms like Dreamwidth. Don’t forget the little known Pillowfort, or the highly fannish Tumblr. Even better, be aware that your creative may present different faces in different spaces. They are just as human as the rest of us!

Talk to them

I’m serious! Being a creative is like shouting into the abyss… if the abyss happens to shout back, that’s emotional food that can sustain a creative for days. Most creatives have several places where they can be found, either for private communication (check to see if they accept messages/DMs/emails first, please) or for public conversation (social media can be wonderful!).

Create a transformative work

This won’t work for all creatives. BUT. If your creative is a writer, I would place a bet that they would LOVE fanart of their work. Or maybe that’s just me.

Buy their stuff

Yes, this one requires money, and I am well aware that most of us don’t have the budget for monetary support. And that’s fine! As shown above, there are so many other ways to support your creative and help them grow. But if you do have the budget, picking up copies of their work means you can get great gifts for your friends (and help spread the word!). And if you’re up for it, monthly support via Patreon, or random tips are always nice and appreciated things.

Ask them what will help

In the end, every creative has their own list of things that will help them most, and almost every single one would be happy to tell anyone what would help Right Now.

Meet Gravewatcher Siobhan. Shiv, to her friends.

Shiv is a paranormal investigator and archaeologist, fascinated with the ancient origins of life on Tyria and the intricacies and interplay of the material world and the Mists. A fast friend to the Deldrimor and a committed Priory scholar, she got her "Dark Souls"-esque name from her habits- rather literally, she watches graves.

During the Risen incursions following Zhaitan's rise to power, she served the Pact in her own grim but highly necessary way- walking between fresh graves with lamp and censer, driving off corruption in the soil, diverting Zhaitan's influence away from fallen soldiers in times where the magic was too rampant to purify.

She remained with the Pact for some time following the showdown in Orr- when news of Zhaitan's fall reached Fort Trinity, she was already on a ship heading toward Siren's Landing for continued investigations.

It wasn't until long after the events that shook Maguuma- she thought it best to sit Mordremoth out, given her already-malleable state of mind- that she left her little patch of Orr to serve the world's best interests again.

The Thunderhead Peaks were calling.

Between Ogden Stonehealer's observations recorded at the Priory, the various ruins she'd explored, and the numerous conspiracy theories she'd entertained herself with while digging up Orr's beaches, she was ready to involve herself in history and get some answers.

Some distinguish themselves with acts of great valor or daring. Shiv rose through the ranks as if steadily walking, one at a time, at a pace she set- an explorer until it served better to be a magister, a magister until her studies called for the access afforded to Priory archons.

It was from this position of magical affluence that she investigated the Great Dwarf- and began to seek linkages between the Eternal Alchemy and rituals of collective consciousness. Her theory held that all things were conscious- and that by mapping that consciousness with techniques similar to those used by Omadd's machine, an individual could- in essence- get a message out to all creation.

More practical means won out- before long the soldiers were beating Kralkatorrik's crystallized blood into spears and swords, and that was a good deal more straightforward than trying to map his brain and then solve it like a Rubik's cube.

But somehow she knew she wasn't done playing with the Eternal Alchemy. Some might've taken Scarlet Briar's dangerous foibles as an object lesson in not playing with cosmology, but when Cantha opened up to the world, she was quick to hop a ship and race to Echovald Forest.

She had heard a thing or two about Wardens, and needed very much to prove a point.

Their unity with Urgoz was a little too similar to the Rite of the Great Dwarf. Were they another inroad to map the way minds could connect?

Things that are true about Vesper:

-Ungodly stubborn. Just so incredibly frustratingly stubborn. Even with Pansa, though to a somewhat lesser extent. He's not stubborn about everything, and he's not completely unreasonable, but if he's decided to stick to something then changing his mind is like trying to pry gorilla glue off a flytrap. Possible, but a lot more effort than it's worth, and you're probably just gonna end up stuck too.

-Bad at self-care. Not on purpose, but because he doesn't usually think about it or prioritize it. There's always something more important for him to be doing with his time than leisure. Work, field missions, combat training, occasionally working with lower-ranked military members who are skilled enough to be worthy of his time (though he's certainly not anybody's mentor), Hell he'll even do street patrols sometimes if he really feels like he's got nothing else to do. As much as he enjoys working on engineering projects, spending time with Pansa or the LTs, or taking his spaceship for a cruise, he has a hard time justifying why he should do those things when there's more important stuff to get done. +He's thankfully not too bad about meals. Sometimes he forgets to eat because he's so busy, but he rarely (though still occasionally) ignores his hunger for the sake of working. Sleep is a different story though. -Eternal busybody. This follows from the last point, but this extends beyond his personal guilt over not using his time on "valuable" matters. He just sucks at chilling out. He likes, almost needs, some kind of task or activity to keep his attention. Preferably this is something physical and either useful challenging, like tinkering with technology or getting some kind of chore done like cleaning or organizing. He doesn't really enjoy reading for entertainment and he loathes paperwork, but he would gleefully do either of those before having to go to a meeting or a gala where he has to just sit patiently. And god forbid anyone tries to put him on R&R, he's practically allergic to bed rest. It takes maybe an hour of laying around before he's gone fully stir-crazy and has run off.

-Proud. Vesper's no egomaniac, but he can't deny that he thinks highly of himself and his skills. He'll very calmly concede to not being the best at many things. He's not a chef or an artist, he could never be an actor, and even if he enjoys dancing there are easily millions of beings out there who could make him look pitiful by comparison. But as a combatant? A general? A spaceship pilot? The emperor's most trusted and beloved right-hand man and confidant? Nobody in the entire universe can compare. And this pride can also make him react quite negatively to having his ego bruised. Sometimes he'll react with disdain, getting needlessly aggressive and picking fights with whoever embarrassed him. Other times he'll just shy into himself and find somewhere to escape to, usually too embarrassed to show himself for a few hours, even days if it's bad enough. He's not above a good wallow in self-pity (though he'd of course deny that statement emphatically). Both reactions can be,, childish, but hey... he can't be good at everything. +The latter reaction usually happens when he's actually lost or been proven wrong fair and square, while the former happens if someone's being insulting or has revealed some secret that he deems embarrassing. -Protective. This applies most to people. Not just his loved ones, but he considers every citizen of the empire to be under his protection and he works hard to ensure everyone's safety. But Vesper is also protective of other things. He's protective of ideals, willing to argue over why something he did was right even if it breaks some sort of rule. He's protective of his space, very cautious about letting people into his personal areas like his living quarters or even the drawers in his office. He's protective of objects too, if he's attached enough to them. Mainly that's gifts from close friends, but he'll also maul someone if they damage his collection of spaceships, and he's also got a growing collection of antique radios (both the music sort and the communication sort) and blueprints that he keeps very safely locked up in his chambers. -Loyal. Vesper's got a lot of qualities that can make it hard to really get close to him, as seen above. But for the people he does let in, he'd go to the ends of the goddamn universe to keep them safe. He's not the best at expressing it, but he does what he can.

Appearance: Whimsy is a tall, thin man with a lean, lanky build. His skin is fair, his hair is golden blond, chin-length, shaggy, and a perpetual mess, his face is narrow and sharp, and he’s almost always bearing a wide, slightly unhinged grin. He hides his eyes with a blindfold (using magic to substitute for his vision) and adorns himself in colorful, brightly patterned clothes.

Personality: Above all else, Whimsy is highly eccentric. He’s emotional, animated, and excitable, as well as prone to frequent, intense mood swings. While his behavior is always a little off, he’s generally an easygoing, light-hearted person who doesn’t pick fights or involve himself in conflict. However, his early years in the cult also gave him a highly warped perception of morals and what’s “justified”, and that comes with a strange, almost out-of-character tendency for violence when he feels it’s deserved. He’s very weak-willed on his own, not knowing how to live without having someone or something to revolve his life around— and because of that, he’s prone to all-consuming obsessions with the things that captivate him.

Positive Traits: While he does come across as strange, Whimsy is generally pleasant and easy to get along with. He’s a peaceful sort who prefers to avoid conflict and disagreements, and is most often seen in a cheerful mood. He’s highly passionate and devoted; when he finds something he believes in, he dedicates himself to it in full. Emotionally intelligent, he’s skilled at swaying people to his side. Patience comes easily to him, and he’s the type to be content with what life hands him, so long his as basic needs are met.

Negative Traits: Whimsy’s worst trait is that he’s a terribly weak-willed individual who struggles to stand on his own. When he doesn’t have something to base his entire life and personality around, he can barely function. He’s prone to changing his personality to suit whatever a situation calls for, although his mood swings and overly emotional tendencies shine through no matter how hard he tries to act otherwise. Obsessive and warped, he’ll do whatever his “idol” tells him to, no matter the act.

History: Whimsy spent his early years in a backwoods cult of an unclear nature. Whatever happened to him there was far from healthy, but he remains convinced that everything he experienced during his childhood was perfectly normal. When the cult was dissolved, he was aimless, with nothing to live for... right up until he met Ethereal. He dedicated himself to her from that point on (as his new cult leader, more or less), and later followed her to Winterkill Works when she was “hired” as a Super Executive.

Relationships: Whimsy’s main relationships are with Lux and Ethereal. He’s social enough with others, but most people find him mildly creepy, at best. While he bears no ill feelings toward her, Lux generally dislikes him as well, though she does respect him for their shared loyalty to Ethereal. Ethereal is the person who’s most fond of him, overall, and Whimsy’s devotion for her knows no bounds. His life revolves around her in every way.

Interests: Whimsy likes bright colors and wild fashions, people with strong leadership, and having something to dedicate himself to. He dislikes being on his own, bright lights, and anything “unjust”. His only clear personal interest is attending to Ethereal, including whatever that may require.

WW Role: As an Assistant-rank member of Winterkill Works, Whimsy’s job is to assist a chosen Super Executive however they may require it. He serves under Ethereal, although that job often resembles babysitting more than a boss-and-subordinate relationship. He tries to help other Assistants with their work as well, though most often, these attempts are refused.

Miscellaneous: Whimsy claims he wears the blindfold because too much light hurts his eyes. However, it seems that there may be a deeper reason behind it. Despite Lux’s general dislike of him, Whimsy remains optimistic that they’ll someday be friends. Since he grew up in a highly rural area, he doesn’t do well with cities... and can be highly ignorant about how life in them works. He speaks of the cult he grew up in with nothing but fondness, and is entirely oblivious to it when others try to tell him otherwise. He’s highly adept with magic use, especially the kind he uses to “see”.

Connotative Description: A former cult member whose experiences in his youth warped his idea of how to live on his own. He has to have a cult leader-like figure to function, and his morals solely revolve around them.

Review: Queen High by C. J. Carey

I was lucky enough to read a highly immersive book called Widowland last year and I was really happy to discover that it had a sequel. You should definitely read Widowland before jumping into Queen High, as it will give you a thorough introduction to the world that these books are set in and what Rose has already been through. They’re both very addictive books, so I’m sure you’ll enjoy them!

Since the Leader died two years ago, the Protectorate has become a land of spies. Rose Ransom is still a Class I female working as a ‘corrector’ of literature, making classic novels acceptable for the teachings of the Alliance. Now, she has been asked to turn her hand to poetry, which must be banned completely and Rose needs to seek out any cases of poetry that might be hiding. Meanwhile, President Eisenhower of the US is about to make a state visit and Rose has also been asked to ensure that Queen Wallis is fit to meet to him. But she’s met with a queen who is desperate to go back to her homeland and spouting claims of a highly sensitive document that could destroy the whole Alliance. Could this way of life finally be over for everyone?

Since the events of Widowland, paranoia has spread through the Alliance like wildfire. It’s a scary regime and it seems that very few people are above suspicion. However, in some ways, I could see reflections of our society within it. Surveillance is much more prevalent now and I think mistrust is too.

The classification system of women is stomach-churning, as the criteria for each rank seems to largely be based on looks, wealth and reproductive abilities. While it’s possible to move down ranks, it doesn’t seem to be possible to move up, so once a woman gets her social class, that’s generally her path for life. The Friedas are the lowest class of women and they live in Widowlands, which are run-down areas of town, segregated from everyone else. It’s a fascinating, infuriating notion but a fantastic device for illustrating misogyny and objectification in speculative fiction like this.

Rose is a 31-year-old Geli, the highest class of woman, but she is unmarried with no children. She is dating newspaper editor Douglas and she starts to imagine what her life would be like if she married him in order to avoid declassification. I felt sure that Rose wouldn’t subject herself to an unhappy marriage but the fact that she was considering it to protect her status worried me. I really didn’t want such a brilliant mind as hers become little more than a subserviant wife and baby-making machine.

The regime is doing everything it can to erase people’s memories of the Leader’s assassination and everything that happened before it. This kind of mass mind control is a terrifying notion that I wouldn’t like to believe is possible but that I’m not completely convinced isn’t. While this book is supposed to be an alternate history, certain parts of it felt very futuristic and I can definitely see some of these tactics being employed by future dictatorships.

The idea of poetry as a powerful weapon is one that literature lovers can easily get on board with. Poetry has been used to ignite revolutions, express rebel ideas and deep emotions for centuries, so it’s only natural that a regime like the Protectorate would want to take that power away from its people. Rose’s search for poetry leads her to the most desperate members and places of society and once again, her eyes are opened to the realities of what’s going on under her very nose.

Queen Wallis is recently widowed and she’s very unhappy at having to stay in the country. Even as the most powerful woman in the Alliance, she is still a prisoner of the Protectorate and subject to vicious gossip, like every other woman. Rose knows her pain and as she gets to know the queen, she wants to do everything she can to help her fulfill her mission to go home. One thing I love about Rose is her ability to see the world from positions that are wildly different to her own and she uses that selflessness for good.

The Alliance segregates its women because it knows how much disruption they can cause, if they unite. By separating them, they eliminate the possibility of friendships forming across castes and from women like Rose seeing the truth of how the Friedas live. The fact that Rose gains all the information she has about the Widowlands via secret visits suggests that the men don’t consider that women might have curious, intelligent minds of their own.

Queen High is an explosive, powerful sequel to a book that imagines a pivotal point in European history differently while managing to mirror our present world. It’s a very intricate, engaging and exciting feminist speculative novel headed up by a heroine that you want nothing but good things for. I would love to see what Carey writes next, as a mind that can conjure up the idea of these books is a truly fascinating one.

Elevated toxicity in the middle bracket

Typically, player’s MMR tend to settle in a bell-shape curve if you would put them in a graph. A small amount of players at the bottom, a large amount of players in the middle, and a small amount of players at the top.

There’s a good chance that you too are among the masses in the middle bracket. And that means there’s a good chance you have also experienced a good amount of toxicity.

Let me be clear, competitive games always have the potential to become highly toxic because of their fundamental nature. In most games, you rely on your team to do play a certain way according to the rank they have. It is annoying and frustrating when you see players don’t do what you think they should do, I mean, they are at the same rank as you. They should know what to do. Or do they?

Specialists among specialists

The perception that you have on playing a game is just that: a perception. You think you and your team must do this or that. You think they did something wrong. But what about what they think?

That is where the issue lies for these mid-level games. I believe players in this bracket have a very incomplete skill set. If we think about each skill you can have a game with a 5 star rating, players who have just started: they have 0 stars in all ratings (and that is fine). Players who are at the top have an extremely balanced and refined skill set, likely 4 stars in everything and 5 stars in a good majority. Then the question remains, what do you think the mid level players look like?

I believe they have an extremely unbalanced skill set. 1 or 2 stars in most skills, and a 4 in a select few skills they focused on. That is the source of a very high amount of toxicity, especially on the precipice of achieving the higher ranks, taking Platinum IV (top 15%) as an example in the graph above.

To attack or to defend

To paint the image a bit more clearly, let’s use Rocket League as an example. We’ve got 3 core skills which players can focus on: shooting, defending, and passing.

Each of these skills have the potential to carry you to this precipice of higher ranks. But what one player specialized in does not mean another did the same, this is what skews the individual’s perspective to their own specialty.

Player 1 is a specialist in shooting. They can dribble through the air, can maybe pull off a flip reset, and consistently shoot on target. Player 2 is a specialist in defending. They will rotate back quickly and efficiently to stop potential goals, preferring to let others shoot when possible.

The scenario appears where player 1, in their aggressive playstyle, tried for a goal but ultimately missed. Player 2, with their good rotation, is in position to shoot on a fairly open goal. They miss.

“What a shot! What a shot! What a shot!”, appears in chat, sent by player 1.

Yikes. The mood is ruined, player 1 doesn’t trust player 2 anymore and will play even more aggressively, taking the ball from player 2 because they will miss anyway. Chat is spammed with sarcastic and petty messages, communication broke down and the game is lost.

A matter of perspective

Ultimately, the issue is that when someone is only good at one or a few things, they will see exactly what someone else does wrong in their specialty, but fails to realise that other players have their own specialty also.

Player 1 from the example probably didn’t think at all about some amazing saves player 2 pulled off, or how player 2 always seems to be in position to tap the ball away from any potential attackers. But it’s so easy to see player 2 missing, what they think, an easy goal. And the same happens vice versa.

Once players reach a level where their skill is once again averaging out towards the higher level, common toxicity takes over.

Based off the B4 Campaign from 0DnD

Chapter 2: The way forward

“Ello strangers.” The musty old man in his many coats and his feathered crow mask had once again appeared from the darkness before the party.

“We sure do bump into each other allot eh? Them Mistressess o’the maiden don’t know of you. Which i finds highly suspect given your constant roaming.”

Tullius eyed the man with suspicion, his own expression mirroring his golden mask.

“You’re the old man with the herbs, correct?”

“That i am. You want some dank kush?”

Tullius winced once more at the mentioning of the herbs in question. Halfling pipe weed was common place among the ranks of the Thyatian military but this ‘dank’ ‘kush’ sounds like some of the more illicit substances from Darroken. Not to mention the brotherhood of Grom are very disapproving of the stuff themselves. However, Amalia was quite specific in her request that we acquire those herbs. Illicit or not.

“Yes. in fact we were hoping to buy 10 bushels of the green herbs.”

“Aye, sorry friend. Didn't think you lot were actually interested by this point. Sold em all to them warrior maidens, the floor above.” Qu’illa looked at Judia for some context but she simply shrugged.

“Well can you get us some herbs. We can pay in coin.”

“Sure thing stranger. Follow me.” Tullius, Qu’illa, Cuddles, Judia and Derick all follow in close tow. Preserving their torches so they dont give away their position and lose their supplies.

“The names Tullius by the way. Were are we going?”

“The great underground city of Cynidcia, stranger. Its were i keep my shop.”

“You dont need to call me a stranger you know my name.”

“A cynidcian don’t need asking for directions home. And even if you wear that Mask o’ Gorm i can tell you aint one of us.” Tullius felt nervous. Like the pyramids walls were closing in on him faster than the silent dead.

“Why are you so interested in trading with us then?” The merchant didn't look back when he spoke. There wasnt much point in the dark.

“Strangers come in on occasion carrying loot and coin. They die and get picked over by more strangers. I knew you lot were adventurers the moment i met you. Even if your company keeps changing.” A wave of guilt and sadness washed over Tullius. How many of their expedition died down here. Did they retrieve all the bodys. Will brother Talon even give them a proper burial…

A moments silence passed.

“Did i sour the mood stranger? Sorry about that. Being among the only sane folk who arnt trying to kill everyone else can really take a toll on ya.”

“Sorry. I just reminiscing on… everything thats happened.”

“I just hope my sons still holding in there back home” Judia piped in.

The party proceeded through the pyramids dark halls for what seemed like hours.

Later at the underground city.

The party arrived unscathed at the underground city of Cynidcia. The city sits in a massive cavern with many large square buildings and two main roads that cross in the middle. Beyond the city is a large underground lake that takes up most of the cavern itself. A small island sits in the middle of the lake with large dominating cliffs far on the opposite side of the lake itself. The merchant walks the party back to his home via the unnaturally well lit road.

“No fires. Is this magic?”

“Magic light stranger. The Magi of Usumagaris are quite aware of the effect light has on humanoids.“

“Doesn't it break your night vision too?”

“Correct stranger. But technically speaking light all around is gives further sight than the mere short distance we can see without it.” Tullius can't fault that logic but he didnt like simply accepting things like logic. Logic was for wizards and clergymen after all.

Qu’illa folded her arms over her back. Being an elf she was in the same boat as the cynidcians when it came to night vision. And she knew precisely how light can be used to good effect. “Maybe they can teach me a thing or two about magic. Casting light in peoples eyes is very effective i heard.”

A language that Qu’illa, much to her annoyance, was quite fluent in. She responded in kind with many strong and horrible words ranging from elvish, to bugbear to gnolish and even orcish.

Qu’illa blushed after being so kindly spoken too after the vulgar exchange.

“I am sorry miss. I took you for a foolish knave who sought an easy path to magic. But it seems you are well learned enough to seek the true path to magic mastery.”

“What the fuck.” judia wispered.

“I dont know said cuddles.”

The merchant gestured for the group to keep following as he had no intention to stop.

The tall figure wore rainbow coloured robes, a silver mask depicting the statue of the child that was built upon the top of the pyramid and a wide and somewhat pointy rainbow colored hat .

“Come with me young mistress we have much to discuss.” He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and ushered her her into one of the largest buildings.

“Uuuh guys?”

“We’ll catch up with you later.” Tullius looked at cuddles who was trying to hiding behind Derrick. “Cuddles you go with her and mach sure nothing bad happens.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. we should be somewhat safe here in town. Besides, we need to get more information on the other groups here. Im counting on you.”

Qu’illa was spirited away before she could protest with cuddles close behind.

The party arrived at a small shop with a small herb garden built next to it.

“I was just done delivering some red herbs to the Sisters of Muradia up in the pyramid when you lot showed up. Welcome to my shop. How can i help you today.” The merchant stood behind his counter window. He had shelves with potions and potted plants behind him. His was one of three shops here near what looked like an out of place and decently sized park. There was a large shop named Mr Shoes rope and bombs. And a shop called the happy little mask shop.

“Now normally i only accept rubies and other gem stones as payment. Coin is rather scarce, you see. But since you all seem to have cash i'm willing to take one to stimulate the economy a little.”

“Are rubies common?”

“Not really but Mr shoe has a lucrative trade going with some gnomes so he’s the one who gets to dictate the currency you see.”

The selection behind the merchant were green, red and blue herbs and various potions containing all different colours of opaque liquid.

“So. What are you buying?”

Tullius was told he needed to bring back 10 green herbs. But he was never aware of the other two.

“What do they all do?” Talk is cheap, it never hurts to ask questions even if you don't get answers. Lucky for him the merchant was rather talkative.

“Ahh yes. Well you see each has differing medicinal properties. The green herbs can cure you of any bacterial and parasitic infections.” Tullius had a poor poker face but his stern golden mask was a good poker buddy.

“The red herbs have a hemophobic effect. It causes bleeding, major or otherwise to cease.” Tullius was quickly regretting letting the elf leave.

“And the Blue herbs, despite their psychedelic properties are most effective at staving off viral infections, plauges and not yet established.” Tullius was about to crack like an overcooked egg when Judia spoke up.

“Ooo! Cures plauge you say! I need one for my son.”

“Your son you say? Well mistress its yours for only 500 gold.”

“500 gold? I only got like… 40. Hey tulius you got some gold i can borrow.”

“Wait, wait, wait. How much is it for 5 of each herb?”

“More than you’ve got stranger. Come back when you’ve got enough cash.”

“Well shit. I don't know if we can afford this guys.”

The merchant holds up his hand for attention.

“Now gentlemen, perhaps we can come to an agreement. I believe i asked this little favour of you lot before but gave little detail.”

“Asked what?” The merchant produced a couple maps from his bag and rolled them out on the table.

“You see. When we were clearing out the underground catacombs bellow we moved most o’ the bodys to that old island in the middle of the lake. The priests of zargon do a poor job o’ looking after it. I found these here herbs bellow along with an old jurnal containing a lot of information about these here herbs. Information thats been very important to my research. Im missing one small component Tullius. I need the rare white herb.”

“Rare white herb?”

“Yea. supposedly the old nobles used it to give themselves unnaturally long life by using a lot of faf i dont whole understand yet. You go down there and find me that herb. Alls i can tell you is that it once was kept with the old head priest. You find him and you find the herb.”

“And you’ll give us the herbs were after?”

“Right you are stranger!” Well he was using my name for for a hot second there.

“Well ok you got a deal. Mr Crow mask man.”

“Caw… Caw...” The merchant mused.
