I love traumatised characters; the ones that were so mistreated by the people closest to them that now they rarely open themselves up to others in fear of being hurt; the characters that are treated as sacrificial lambs; characters that are so misunderstood that even writers forget who they truly are, at their core; the characters that would sacrifice their lives for others without betting and eye, not because they are heroes but because they don’t think of themselves as worthy of outliving others; I especially love the flawed characters that are not afraid of being flawed! No pressure - I just saw your post and love to talk about TLOU. I loved TLOU 1 as a teen and still do but hate Duck-man and have basically erased TLOU2 from my brain. Would love to hear what you think!

to give credit where credit is due, i think joel and ellie are good characters who had a very compelling relationship with each other, which is why the first game worked at all.

that being said, i've always taken issue with the way society's collapse is portrayed on most zombie stories and it's no different on this series, but it annoys me a little more than usual because it does try to take itself seriously and fails to provide a perspective more interesting than presenting us with a literal trolley problem at the end of the game (in a rather contrived scenario).

i like some of the ideas both parts 1 and 2 try to tackle, especially the messy way we deal with grief and trauma, but i think that it ultimately never escapes a very surface level 'humans are selfish' read of the world that is presented as fact, which is disappointing considering its main strength is the way it handles ellie and joel's relationship in the story

#ask #well that and a bunch of stuff on part 2. i had the impulse to defend it for a while bc ppl attacked it for bullshit reasons (being 'woke')#but yeah it kind of is a mess even just story-wise. the way ellie's relationships were written was kind of atrocious #jesse and dina and tommy are not well integrated into the story. like at all #abby's side was better on this regard but it also had major pacing issues with the flashbacks #and. of course. the offensive palestine -> seraphites parallel #ultimately though i just feel that tlou thinks it's smarter and deeper than it actually is which is annoying enough on its own

Unless Season 2 will be completely set between the two games and has all the flashbacks in their chronological place, ending the season with Golfclub, I have no idea how any of this will work

I’ll join you on the list of Tommy Miller and Abby Anderson defenders because they’re going to get a lot of stick in season 2/3 and they don’t deserve it!

I like to think that Tommy haters are the typical only child in their families and Abby haters don't love their dads because there is no way in hell you cannot understand why they did what they did.

Like with Abby, I get holding some sort of resentment bc she killed your favourite character (tho not understanding why is crazy to me, but I get not liking her bc of it).

But Tommy?!? He did NOTHING wrong.

Yall act like Ellie had every right for revenge, but Tommy didn't? Tommy had even more. His older brother was killed in front of him, a man he had known his entire life, looked up to, shared a childhood/adulthood with, the only family he had left, suffered from a head injury, felt so hopeless because he couldn't protect him the same way Joel had his whole life as people held him back and made him watch. Like bffr.

Ellie was unhappy with Dina and their facade of a happy family because of what happened, and she would've continued to be miserable. Tommy had every right to let her know where Abby was. He didn't ruin their family cause it was ruined the second Joel died the way he did, and everyone knew it deep down.

So don't act like Tommy is the "bad guy" in a love story that was gonna fail because of Ellie's need for justice and closure. For both Tommy and Ellie, Joel meant the most. It's disappointing to see people ignoring Tommy's trauma. As the youngest sibling with two older brothers, I got your back Tommy 🫶

i’ve heard a lot of ppl say they don’t like tlou part 2’s plot because it felt like abby and her dad were just random characters who came out of nowhere but like… i actually liked the fact that you don’t know about their characters until part two. in video games where you have to kill a lot of ppl to progress it can feel like npcs don’t really matter or that they’re just obstacles to get thru the game. so i liked how when you kill someone that feels like every other npc it comes back to bite you later. it does a good job of reminding you that even tho it’s a video game, all the people you’re killing are still people, with lives and family members who will mourn them and won’t forget and plot revenge against you. you kill a girls dad and she wants to kill you. anyway
