My main problem with the maternity debate with Kate is that people are under the assumption that she is no different from any other mother when she very very much is. No one likes to talk about the effects of class and poverty on issues like maternity, least of all in this fandom, but Kate is in a much higher and privileged position than most other mothers in the world. And before I get any further into it, I just want to stress that I am NOT saying that she wouldn’t have her fair share of problems with motherhood or parenting. She clearly could, and we could be none the wiser. There are plenty of examples of women for whom wealth was no cushion against that type of thing (Duchess of Kent, for example).  However, with that being said, she is in a position to be able to afford help. She is in a far more privileged position than most other working mothers, both in terms of the help she can afford and the fact that the nature of her job is fundamentally different and so much more amenable to her needs. I don’t think it’s fair or helpful to anyone to not take that into account, especially if we’re trying to make a point about how maternity and parenthood affects working women around the world. There are differences between Kate and an ordinary women and the type of responsibilities they have and can take on, post maternity. That’s okay. That’s part and parcel of this discussion and it does everyone, especially Kate, a disservice to not talk about that type of thing.
