Hi! This isn't relevant to the current lore but have you listen to 2D's cover of Crystalised by The XX? It was marketed as a Gorillaz cover back in 2010 and I read somewhere that 2D was the one who chose the song (not confirmed though, I don't have the source), the lyrics are...quite interesting if you think it's from 2D to Murdoc, especially when it was set in Phase 3, just wanna hear your thoughts. Anyways, I love your blog and your analysis are always so mind-opening to read!

I did listen to that recently, I never noticed the marketing around it at the time, even though I was totally engaged with lore back then.. weird.
It.. honestly really should say something significant about characterization for Gorillaz to choose to do a song cover. If Damon wanted to cover that song he could just… cover the song. He didn’t need to pretend that 2D, but instead, they made a decision with narrative consequences to choose this particular song and associate it with that character… Like, FM, is another cover, it’s not 2Doc, (like we’re obviously implying Crystalised is lmao) but it’s very in-theme with the band. It’s basically “as long as it sounds good, who cares about genre”. So yeah, it seems like a waste of time for them to cover a song that just means nothing to Gorillaz.
