Everyone gets lost in Cillian Murphy’s eyes. At the end of his latest film, “Oppenheimer,” in which he plays the titular character, Oppenheimer stands alone, staring at the pattern of rain droplets over a still pond. As the camera lingers on his face, a ring of fire begins to consume the Earth, and an immense blaze fills the whole scene. Not a sound is uttered, but the emotion conveyed in those piercing blue eyes speaks louder than words.

Murphy’s eyes that speak surely bring the character of Oppenheimer to life, even in the black and white parts of the film. “I try not to think of actors as I write, but Cillian’s eyes were the only eyes I know that can project that intensity,” Nolan said to the New York Times. This is their sixth collaboration, but the first time Murphy has played the lead. With “Oppenheimer” surpassing $900 million at the global box office — becoming one of the most acclaimed biopics to date — audiences have become as eager to learn about it’s as they are about the father of the atomic bomb.

Even though it took Hollywood a while to recognize Murphy’s potential to play a starring role, this quietly intense actor has long been celebrated in the UK and Ireland. A survey of his portfolio since his debut in 1996 reveals a daring selection of characters: Jackson Ripper, a terrorist leader in “Red Eye;” Fischer, the heir to a multi-billion empire in “Inception;” Daniel O’Donovan, an Irish republican in “The Wind That Shakes the Barley;” an anonymous, shivering soldier in “Dunkirk.” None of these names carry the same fame as the legendary physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer on screen today, but Murphy honored them all.

In order to get ready for the part of Patrick “Kitten” Barden, Murphy spent weeks working with a real-life drag queen, who took him clubbing with friends so he could study women’s body language and learn how to dress. To be able to convincingly act out Tommy Shelby, a WWI veteran, he followed a hard-hitting workout plan to look “physically imposing” for the part. The quest to achieve Oppenheimer’s chiseled cheeks and a haunted look took him to the opposite end of the spectrum. According to costar Emily Blunt, on set he would only eat one almond a day to slim down and was so immersed in the role that he skipped cast dinners. According to Murphy, “It’s not the scale, it’s the quality.” For him, great dedication is necessary in order to fully embody his characters.

Clearly, his hard work has paid off. Murphy is now the 5/4 favorite to win Best Actor at the 2024 Oscars for his performance in “Oppenheimer,” as predicted by The Online Betting Guide, and his last role as Tommy Shelby in “Peaky Blinders” earned him his first BAFTA TV Awards nomination for Leading Actor. Prior to this, he also received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his role as a transgender woman in “Breakfast on Pluto.”

Yet Murphy did not always know he wanted to be an actor, and it took him a long time to discover his life-long passion. His father was a civil servant and his mother a French teacher, but the house was always busy — non-stop music, bookshelves filled with literature, and the radio often on. His parents sent him to an all-boys private school, where he was involved in rugby for some time before giving it up. Then, he tried for a law degree at University College Cork, but he quit that too. He devoted years to doing what his parents wished for, not necessarily what he wanted, and “he didn’t feel good enough.” After that, he had a fleeting music career before a stage production of “A Clockwork Orange” guided him to his true passion — acting.

His first breakthrough came in the 2002 movie “28 Days Later,” where he played Jim, the lone survivor of a pandemic in a desolate London. It was a modern horror classic which served as a launching pad for Murphy’s career, with Nolan later recalling the poster of Murphy with his bald head and “crazy” eyes in a conversation for Entertainment Weekly. His profile continued to grow in 2005 following his roles in several successful films, namely the Scarecrow in “The Dark Knight” and the villain in the action thriller “Red Eye.” For the last two decades, he has built strong relationships with directors such as Boyle and Nolan and continuously wowed audiences with his talent for playing dark, troubled, and tormented characters. But these complex characters are not strictly villains. As Murphy said in an interview with The Guardian, “Villains are good if they’re well written, but if it’s one note or a trope, then they are dull.” He relishes playing these complex characters and likes scripts to stretch into “all the shades” of the human spectrum.

“I can’t remember which director said it, but he said it takes 30 years to make a good actor,” he said to PORT Magazine. 27 years later, coming off the heels of a starring role in a major film, Murphy appears to have achieved his aim.

In an industry that often rewards fast success, Cillian Murphy has chosen a different path. “Peaky Blinders” made the Irish actor a household name, and Nolan’s blockbuster epic took him even further. However, Murphy continued to pursue roles which were often underrated, because it is “a film that you're very sort of proud of and excited by.” Known for his introverted personality, Murphy has chosen a quiet, normal life away from the public eye, even revealing at one point that he did not enjoy the “personality part” of being an actor. “I don’t understand why it’s expected I’ll be scintillating on a talkshow,” he said in an interview with The Guardian. He is true to his word — Murphy’s bored face during interviews has become a popular meme. Indeed, 67 million people on TikTok have watched videos on “Cillian Murphy interview zoning out,” and they can’t seem to get enough of his dissociating clips. Part of his appeal to fans seems to stem from this authenticity, in contrast with so many other celebrities who aim to please.

To Murphy, character is in fact all that matters. Murphy is satisfied with being the man in the shadows, and though he may not be as flashy as Tommy Shelby with “that charisma and swagger,” he believes that this shows that “I’m doing my job” correctly. “Cillian and Tommy are almost polar opposites,” Steven Knight, the “Peaky Blinders” creator, attested in an interview with Esquire.

As recounted in the Esquire interview, when Murphy auditioned for the role, Knight doubted whether this very thin man was the right fit for a Bringham-based gangster. Murphy said a simple yet powerful thing then: “Remember, I’m an actor.” His point was that when he enters a room, he is not Tommy Shelby. But when he is acting, he can become anyone — a gangster, a woman, or a physicist.

What is so mesmerizing about Murphy’s eyes? It is not the color, but the complex, varied emotion that is seen in each glimpse. Murphy can draw people into a story and make them think twice about it afterwards. While he has worked for close to thirty years in the acting industry, making him one of the most prolific actors, neither the standard film crew hierarchy nor his fame will keep him from choosing what truly captivates him. His success is a natural result of his unwavering pursuit and love of the craft.'

Riley is always my MC, but I have given her different last names and different middle names in different stories. All of my character's personalities vary from story to story. And Riley is perhaps the most variable of them all.

Liam is almost always an LI for my Riley, if he's not with Riley, I pair him with Maxwell. In most (but not all) poly fics, she is married to Liam. Occasionally he's in a throuple with either her and Max or her and Drake.

I've written Liam as understanding of her torn feelings about him and Drake and as more jealous of it. I've written him as sweet and innocent and I've written him as possessive and controlling.

In the tradition of most royal houses, I have given him (as well as Leo and any of his children) multiple middle names.

I've written Drake everywhere from completely no jealousy in him to murderous jealousy over her and everything in between. Depends on the tone of the story I'm going for.

I've given him the middle name of Nolan, after one of the greatest pitchers of all time, Texas Ranger Nolan Ryan. His son is almost always named Jackson or Jaxon after his father.

In my Drake x Leo universe, I paired her with Olivia. I have never paired her with a man other than Liam. I have made her queen twice. In Dark Elf she is escorted to social events by Rashad, but she hates it and only does it to appease her parents so they leave her alone and she can focus on her true objectives.

It’s a hard life, being a US Marine assigned SGC Scientist duty.

SGC scientists, as a rule, don’t tend to be sensible, placid people who simply know a lot about one thing. It’s more like someone gave one of those hyper-specialized sea creatures a gun, and taught them to speak Ancient Greek. Overspecialized, armed, and opinionated, and not beholden to military chains of command. And to get a ph.d, you gotta be a little weird already, yeah? To love something enough to brave that many more years of school, instead of getting your Master’s and getting out? They’re nuts to begin with, and the SGC makes ‘em even more nuts.

Being assigned scientist duty is bad enough on base; but it’s a whole new ball game around other civvies.

Because SGC scientists don’t hang around civvie scientists, as a rule, which means they forget certain social norms. Like not calling a rival a “foulbred, dickdrip son of a goat”, and cracking them in the face. In public. With cameras.

It’s just not done, is all.

And it’s worse when it’s an Atlantis scientist you’re saddled with babysitting, because Atlantis scientists are, somehow, even worse.

Maybe it’s the culture—they’re all alone out there, with the same 200-odd people, day in and day out. No leaving work, grabbing a beer with people you don’t work with—just an insular batch of weirdos stuck together out on an alien ocean, making ‘em even weirder. The Atlantis Marines don’t mind, but. Again. They send the weirdos to Atlantis. They even sent Carter to Atlantis, and she’s a USAF weirdo.

Of course, it’s different, when it’s your own weirdo scientist. No one would ever say otherwise.

But who decided the head weirdo scientist of Atlantis, and the SGC’s head weirdo scientist, should get to talk to normal people about, say, anything—didn’t know much about scientists.

The first day of Official Declassification (AKA the “Fuck You We Were Right” Tour, AKA the “Ha, Suckers, I Fly in Space” Tour) began well enough, all things considered. Dr. Jackson was smug, and the poor guy had the right, really; and Dr. McKay was smug, but that might have just been his face; and the civvies all looked chagrined, because most of them had mocked at least one SGC scientist at one point or another. It was fine. Perfectly fine.

The second, too, was fine. There was a moment when Dr. Jackson had tugged Dr. McKay into a different room before Dr. McKay had started yelling, but the marines didn’t have to intervene, so it was deemed a success.

The third had alcohol, which, in retrospect, was a bad call. That was when they discovered SGC scientists, as a rule, were lightweights, and also stupid enough to climb onto the roof of a university building, in the dark, and complain about light pollution. Loudly.

The fourth had no alcohol, but it did have a particularly obnoxious physicist, so it didn’t surprise anybody when he got coldcocked.

The fact that it was Dr. Jackson was surprising, and they did have to do some crowd control, but still. Considering the usual results of Dr. Jackson losing his temper? It was counted successful.

Despite the news headline. And the youtube clips. And the memes.

The fifth had a reporter walk in on Drs. Jackson and McKay making out in a coat closet. That was deemed a failure, although General O'Neill and Lieutenant General Carter had reportedly been found cackling after reading the mission report.

The sixth day, Dr. Lee and Lieutenant General Carter were fielded instead, and lt.Gen Carter was brilliant and beautiful enough that everyone forgot about the rest of the week. Mostly. Or at least pretended they did. Mostly.

SGC scientists, man.

Stargate SG-1 (Season 6 and What Came Before)

Okay, so Stargate SG-1 has been one of those shows that has floated in and out of my streaming cue for years now. I’ve never been able to get all the way through it– because there are ten seasons of the show, but last year (or possibly two years ago, COVID has ruined my sense of time) I decided that I was going to make a push to get all the way through it and this time, amazingly enough, I have, so far, gotten all the way to the end of Season 6.

This year (possibly) might be the year I get it done.

I've been trying to think about it: has there ever been a television show that has seamlessly picked up from the events of the movie that spawned as Stargate SG-1? For real, the pilot episode, Children of the Gods is brilliant television. When the Stargate (shuttered after the events of the movie) comes back to life and soldiers are kidnapped, they reactivate the team-- including O'Neal (Richard Dean Anderson) and Major Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) to go to Abydos and track down Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) to find out what the heck is going on.

Turns out, there's more than one Stargate- there's a whole network of them. And Ra? He was but one of many bad guys known as the Gouald, who are a worm-like race that require hosts for the symbiotes. They soon figure out where the soldiers are, go and get them back and pick up another new friend- a renegade Jaffa, Tealc (Christopher Judge) along the way and then, just like that, SG-1 is off and running.

This is from an era of television that I don't think is ever coming back again, so you have 22 episodes a season. That means, the team goes to an awful lot of planets that bear a passing resemblance to the area in and around Vancouver, British Columbia and they are inevitably confronted with some problem/monster of the week that they then solve and move onto the next mission. But SG-1, once it gets rolling starts mixing things up a bit.

In Season 2, we meet the Tok'ra. I love the Tok'ra. I love the way they are introduced. I love the idea of a secret, legendary band of renegade Gouald who are opposed to the System Lords and rely on voluntary hosts to keep their numbers up. We also meet the Asgard (who resemble the traditional 'Greys' that pop culture loves so much.) We start to see forces that oppose the Stargate program on Earth crop up--- ranging from Senator Kinsey to the NID to the Russians (a very late 90s aspect of this show.)

As you go further into the show, you see Earth start to adopt the technology they find to build hyperspace capable ships and get out into the galaxy a bit more.

Before we get into Season 6 specifically though: there has been talk of rebooting Stargate. Call it a reboot, revival, whatever they do with it-- there is one place that Stargate has not gone and it's the only thing that I can think of that will open up myriad new story possibilities for the franchise: disclosure.

They've tip-toed around it now again-- Eli in Stargate: Universe solves a video game puzzle they embedded into a video game and gets beamed up to a space ship and agrees to join the program. (Though it doesn't exactly work out well for him in the end.) But disclosure is the way to go. Seeing how society reacts. Seeing how civilians react. It's hard to believe, given how big the program is getting, that someone hasn't noticed by now, but maybe it's an open secret that hasn't been revealed to the public at large yet-- I don't know. But I think everything should flow from that as a starting point if you're going to reboot the series. Bonus Points if you manage to pull another Children of the Gods out of your hat and make the transition from the old show to the new one as seamless as they did between the movie and television.

ALL OF THAT BEING SAID, let's jam about Season 6:

So, by the time Season 6 rolls around, Daniel is gone. He's ascended to the next plane of existence and newcomer Jonas (Corin Nemec) has taken his place. The threat of Anubis is still growing- but has yet to reach it's peak. Stargate Atlantis hasn't started yet- but there are hints that it's coming-- we go back to the Antarctic sight in 'Frozen' and Daniel finds direct references to the City of the Ancients in 'Full Circle' at the end of the season, so they're definitely laying the groundwork for it.

There are some hints that Daniel isn't all the way gone either- he appears to Jack in 'Abyss' and provides comfort, though he is forbidden from doing anything. Tealc also sees him in 'The Changeling' where he's skipping through various realities and Daniel shows up. 'Full Circle' seems to be the first indication that Daniel is coming back in some form-- as he cuts a deal to try and save Abydos, which is sort of successful in that the inhabitants-- including Skaraa (Alexis Cruz), all ascend, but other than that, everything is destroyed and the season ends with Anubis getting his hands on an extremely powerful weapon setting up a big Season 7. (At least that's what I'm guessing.)

In terms of Earthbound shenanigans, we see some classified information management when a report finds out about the Stargate Program in 'Prometheus', Senator Kinsey gets shot and it seems like O'Neill is responsible in 'Smoke & Mirrors' and the Americans and Russians have to brief the rest of the world (China, France, Britain, etc.) in 'Disclosure.'

I am excited to keep moving with this show and to maybe, just maybe, get all the way through it at least once. I was a bit curious as to why Michael Shanks left for a season and could only find this as explanation, but I'm glad he's back and I hope Jonas gets to bow out with some dignity, since they had me worried in 'Prophecy' that they were going to straight up kill him off.

My Grade: I'm going to call this one a solid *** out of ****. I'm ready for Season 7 and for a show that has a few seasons under it's belt, Stargate SG-1 is ticking all the boxes with this season. 6 official down, 4 more to go!

The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour - 001 05/18/23 Defy TV 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM EST Filmed at the Good Time Theatre at Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania

SEGMENT ONE (NINE MINUTES):

- The program opened with a standup at the commentary booth. Sudu Upadhyay welcomed the Defy TV viewers to the inaugural episode of The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour and introduced his broadcast colleague "The Living Legend" Larry Zbyszko. Zbyszko told viewers it's opening week at Dorney Park, the best amusement park this side of Larryland.

- An opening video intro of CORE highlights aired set to "Black Swan Lake" by Janko Nilovic.

Titus Alexander vs. Prince Ahmed Titus Alexander defeated Prince Ahmed with the Chaos Theory. (3:55)

- A video aired which showed an older gentleman in a dark blue denim jacket over a flannel shirt and matching dark denim jeans as he fed ducks from a metal pail along the banks of Harveys Lake. The gentleman spoke of how great pro-wrestling has been to his family, how blessed he is to have this beautiful ranch right outside of Dallas, Pennsylvania. The man introduced himself as Franz Von Trier, the patriarch of the Von Trier family. Franz said that he and his sons have been so fortunate to have the support of the entire Back Mountain area as they packed the Anderson Sports and Health Center at Misericordia University in downtown Dallas, Pennsylvania every week for the last twenty years. As the camera zoomed in on a lovely ranch home over his shoulder, Franz said these next few weeks he'll be introducing his boys, his wife Dottie, and the entire Von Trier family to the fans of COal REgion Pro-Wrestling.

SEGMENT TWO (SEVEN MINUTES):

Giant Baba Yaga (with UltraMantis Black) vs. Portia Giant Baba Yaga defeated Portia with the Russian Leg Sweep. (4:11)

- A video aired which opened with a wrestling mat being rolled out over a gymnasium floor. The video highlighted three wrestlers as they put their amateur skills on display against opponents. As the video progressed, the wrestlers began to include elements of the professional wrestling style into their offense and really punish their overmatched opponents. The wrestlers then introduced themselves. Shaw Mason, graduate of the John Carroll University wrestling team and professional wrestler. Hunter Holdcraft, former member of the Augustana College wrestling team and professional wrestler. Timothy Bosby, 2022 Tennessee All-State wrestler, current Memphis Wrestling Internet Champion, and professional wrestler. The video closed with the text - folkstyle. Coming Soon.

SEGMENT THREE (NINE MINUTES):

- A video package aired recapping the emergence of Kerry Morton and his faction. The video opened with Kerry Morton covertly swapping his early entrant number in the Coal Region Rumble with his father Ricky Morton’s later number. Then we saw Kerry Morton menacing then CORE matchmaker Sad Badd at the Bloomsburg Fair about young talent not being booked. Next was a clip of Kerry Morton, Nick Wayne, Starboy Charlie, Marcus Mathers, Brogan Finlay, Billie Starkz, and Kenzie Paige attacking Christopher Daniels and Ultimo Dragon after their Senior Division match. Highlights of their 5-on-5 elimination match at Thanksgiving Tussle ’22 aired next. A clip from Co-Op Weekend where the group attacked and bloodied Sheepherder Luke and Mike Jackson aired in black-and-white.

- After the conclusion of the video package, Prince Nana appeared on screen for the first edition of his new interview show, The Throne Room. Nana welcomed his guests, Starboy Charlie, Marcus Mathers, and Brogan Finlay, to the set. The three detailed their frustrations with trying to push wrestling forward when promoters and fans always looked to the past. They discussed their issues with CORE creating an entire division solely to prolong the careers of the already over the hill wrestlers. They touched on the negative effects of putting microphones in front of sad, geriatric retreads that belittle and criticize young talent. Prince Nana mentioned that all great factions in wrestling need a name, legendary groups like The Embassy or The Mogul Embassy all had iconic names, Nana wanted to know what their name was. The three admitted they hadn’t yet settled on a name, that they had been more focused on action than messaging, but now that they have established themselves and buried the fossils, they are open to suggestions. Prince Nana encouraged the fools at home to write in with their suggestions and a P.O. Box flashed on the screen.

SEGMENT FOUR (SEVEN MINUTES):

Billie Starkz and Kylie Paige vs. Zayda Steel and Adena Steele Billie Starkz and Kylie Paige defeated Zayda Steel and Adena Steele with the Tombstone from Starkz on Steele. (4:36)

- After the match we are sent to the CORE news desk for the Coal Region Roundup hosted by Daphne Oz. Daphne Oz announced an upcoming CORE live event called The Panic In Pillow Park to be held on June 10th at Pillow Park in Pillow, Pennsylvania. Daphne said the main event has already been signed as Titus Alexander, who we saw earlier in the show, will be taking on Kerry Morton. The show will also see the debut of the folkstyle faction of Shaw Mason, Hunter Holdcraft, and Tim Bosby in a six-man tag match. Oz next confirmed reports that CM Punk had been present at the recent CORE tapings at Dorney Park to visit friends. Daphne Oz moved on to rumors that Ari Daivari's TrustBusters organization were looking to form a reserve team on the independent circuit, and said that the CORE booking office had recently received a video from the TrustBusters that addressed this topic.

- A video aired which showed TrustBusters member and butler JeeVeS K as he finished fluffing the pillows on an immaculately made California king bed inside a lavish master bedroom. JeeVeS K said that at the behest of Ari Daivari, he is preparing these "barracks" for the TrustBusters Reserve, an elite group of independent professional wrestlers that will be standing by should the TrustBusters need to bolster their manpower as they continue to grow and expand. JeeVeS K said that the first group will be arriving momentarily, and after a month of intense training in the finest facilities in the world, the TrustBusters Reserve will make their debut in CORE this summer.

SEGMENT FIVE (EIGHT MINUTES)

Something/Nothing: (Jake Something and Vincent Nothing) with UltraMantis Black vs. Trace Parker and Tom Mitchell Something/Nothing defeated Trace Parker and Tom Mitchell with the Sitout Powerbomb from Something on Mitchell (5:13)

- During an instant replay of the match, Larry Zbyszko asked the audience to indulge him for a minute and called for the camera to cut to the announce desk. Zbyszko talked about the not so veiled shot Starboy Charlie, Marcus Mathers, and Brogan Finlay took at him. Zbyszko warned Finlay that his father in his prime couldn’t beat Zbyszko, and that Brogan is literally half the man his father was. Zbyszko said he had a suggestion for a name for the faction, how about The Born Losers?

SEGMENT SIX (FOUR MINUTES):

Tending to the Living (Mirror’s Edge)

E here with an update for Mirror's Edge! WOO FINALLY! You know when I promise to write more the universe goes "We're gonna make sure that doesn't happen." I explained it in my other recent updates but long story short my laptop crapped on me, the company doesn't wanna honor the whole "You bought an extended warranty and we can't fix it so here's a new one!" and keeps trying to stall me out. I'm using a family members laptop in the meantime while i duke it out with the company.

So I will try to update more often but like i said this is someone's laptop and it's not fair if i hog it all the time so I'll try.

Deep breathes. One step at a time. A lot is going on but all we can do is our best. Have fun. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. Masks in case you run into people who couldn't get the vaccine. Vaccinate cuz science and it's important. Take a load off. Relax. just exist. It's okay. It'll be okay even if it's hard. We got this :)

Summary: Yorrick and Casey are in trouble when their (Yorrick's) plan to simply ask for the priceless artifact they need to save the city doesn't go over well with security. But there may be a way to achieve to their goal through Casey's favorite method: Kindness.

Daniel Langley spent most of his adult life as a museum curator of the Newton Haven Historical Society, gleefully giving tours to eager and hungry minds while satisfying his own need to pass his knowledge onto others.

He wasn’t doing that anymore, however. Nowadays Daniel was head of actually running the entire museum which was infinitely more challenging than simply waving at priceless artifacts and giving fun facts about the object in question.

That was probably for the best given that his 75th birthday was around the corner: Not as spry and springy as he used to be. His well kept graying hair and beard were a testament to the fact he lived a life well lived. He was often described as a kindly grandfather who was unable to contain their disappointment. It was his pointed, near indifferent stare he perfected in his professional career. Especially effective with his piercing gray eyes.

Most days he managed the museum with little to some difficulty but days like today he could feel the ache in his bones and his patience especially tried.

Daniel removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes tiredly as he stared at the troublemakers security brought in today.

“Let me see if I understand this correctly.” He spoke with a hint of irritation “You two attempted to remove one of the objects from their protective casing AFTER informing the guard you would simply be and I quote ‘borrowing it for a bit.’ Is this correct?”

Casey gave a nervous smile, trying his best to project of sincerity and harmlessness “I can assure you that we had no intention of removing such an…important item of Newton Haven’s colorful history from its…case thingy.”

“Oh no I did. It is very important and we kinda need it.” Yorrick chimed in.

Casey closed his eyes and counted to 10.

Daniel grimaced unhappily “Miss...?”

“Oh no miss. Just Yorrick.”

“Mi…Yorrick. Yorrick? Like the….? Oh never mind.” Daniel cleared his throat to give a moment to gather his thoughts “You are aware what a museum’s purpose is? Correct?”

Casey opened his mouth to speak but Yorrick beat him to the punch “Of course. It’s the preservation, restoration and safe guarding of important historical objects as well teaching and informing people of their importance to our history.” Yorrick paused thoughtfully for a moment “Though it does get a bit tricky especially when you add the factor of various stolen items from other places and cultures that really should belong to their individual countries of origins as well as the rich buying priceless artifacts for their own personal…”

Daniel raised a hand to stop her “Okay. So you do know what a museum is.”

Yorrick cheerfully nodded in confirmation.

“And you still thought you could simply…take a priceless katana?”

“Well no. We are borrowing it like I told the guard, not taking and definitely not keeping. I fully intend to return it unscathed.” Yorrick pursed her lips “Well unless I die in which case it’ll probably lost forever but I’m sure you guys can find it! You found it the first time after all!”

Daniel rubbed his eyes again “Okay I’m too tired for this. I am going to just call the police and just let them deal with all this.”

“Sir if you please let us explain!” Casey began but Daniel was already reaching for the phone.

“Is this your wife sir?”

His hand hovered over the phone receiver.

Yorrick gingerly handed back the photo she took from his desk “She’s beautiful.”

A sorrowful sting of pain and longing ached dully in Daniel’s chest. He took the frame from the young woman and turned it slowly for he knew what picture she had grabbed.

It was his wedding day and it was impossible to tell whose smile was wider: His or his beloved Gabriella.

Guilt tugged at his heartstrings as he carefully placed the photo back to its rightful place on his desk.

“Yes.” He closed his eyes for a moment “Yes she was.”

One, two, three.

Daniel looked at the troublemakers again “Now please sit there while I…”

“Can you tell me about her?”

Daniel shot Yorrick a disbelieving glare as she leaned in eagerly.

“My wife….” It was difficult for him. It was impossible for any word to encompass everything she was. What she meant to him. How hard it was to be here without her.

“My wife.” Daniel began again but with a harden edge to this “She has unfortunately passed away recently. And. And my personal business does not concern how much trouble you both are in! You especially.”

Casey was a bit offended when Daniel gestured to him.

“Me? This is the first time I’ve been in trouble in the museum!” Casey raised his hands defensively.

“True but your friend likes to give me plenty of headaches. The one in the trenchcoat who pretends to be Dick Tracy.”

Casey tilted his head curiously “Who?”

Daniel could only give the deadest of deadpan stares. Kids these days.

“Look I understand you younger folk don’t care much for history but it is very important not only for understanding our past as a society but also passing it down throughout the ages. We cannot learn from our mistakes if we cannot remember them!”

Casey shot Yorrick a worried glance but the Gravekeeper was staring intently at the photos that littered Mister Langley’s desk. His wife was in every single one.

Something broke inside Daniel because as he chastised the pair, his voice began to grew in volume with each word “And furthermore I am in charge of a lot of very valuable pieces of history: A longbow expertly crafted by some sort of mercenary group garbed in silver. An authentic outfit worn by actor Fletcher Silverdust. Strange coins with dwarf-figures stamped on their surface! ORPHEUS’S LUTE, the actual musical instrument of Orpheus Drift! And it is my job to ensure their safety and preservation! This is my life’s work and not even my beloved wife was put before it.”

A guilty pang.

Daniel slumped in his chair, the rage draining out of him and replaced with a deep shame.

“Tell me about her.”

Daniel stared at Yorrick, unsure he heard what he thought he heard.

Yorrick smiled gently “I can help you with all these pesky emotions that come with loss. Honest.”

“I…” Daniel began but Casey smoothly cut in.

“She can.” Casey told him softly “She’s very good at it. And who knows? You might feel better.”

“My wife is….was a…”

Daniel didn’t know how he spent the next few minutes talking about his wife when he had previously shut down all attempts from coworkers and family to do so but these two seemed so earnest in whatever they trying to do that he told her how lovely a dancer she was. How beautiful she was even with a red running nose and pale skin. The way she liked her eggs and her favorite kind of braid. He spoke of their trips together, the way they could talk about everything and nothing for hours.

A deep love that could never be replaced.

Or forgotten.

He left out his accidental neglect of her though. That burden was his alone.

“Do you feel better?” Yorrick asked after he finished.

Daniel thought about it for a moment “A little yes. Thank you. But. I cannot simply ignore the fact you both…”

Yorrick lifted her hand to stop him this time “Hold on! We’re not done yet.”

Before Daniel could ask what exactly that meant, Yorrick pulled out a walking stick with an old rusty lantern hung upon it. It seemed to be early 18th century given the color of the patina though it burned with a ghostly green light which was…odd. Wait, how did she sneak that in here?

Yorrick closed her eyes, letting ancient power flow through her being. She murmured something in a language neither Casey or Daniel knew.

Mister Langley raised a curious eyebrow towards Casey but he could only shrug in response.

Thick green smoke bellowed from the flame though curiously neither the fire alarm nor the sprinklers seem to register there was currently a fire in the room.

“Okay I really have to insist you put that out. A fire is….you know just not good in any situation.”

“Darling.”

Daniel’s heart crawled to a stop as a familiar voice called from the lantern. He opened his mouth to speak but no words came to him as the shapeless smoke shifted into a translucent, familiar figure.

Gabriella stood before him bathed in a ghostly green hue.

Casey was knocked out of his stupor from a nudge from Yorrick. She motioned for them to leave the room and the two quietly left the mourning husband reunited with his decreased wife.

“You’re a warlock.”

Yorrick raised a thumb “Yep!”

Casey blinked in surprise “I didn’t expect you to be so….honest about it.”

“I know what kind of reputation we warlocks have.” Yorrick admitted “Not unfounded to be fair. People will make pacts and deals with anything. And anything will grant them.”

Casey bit his lip thoughtfully “The Lantern?”

“Yeah. The Lantern. Well. Not the lantern lantern but whatever is inside it.” Yorrick clarified.

“What is in the lantern?” Casey couldn’t keep the worry out of his voice.

Yorrick remained silent though it was more gathering her thoughts and less avoiding the question.

“I’m not a hundred percent sure if I’m going to be honest” She answered after a few minutes “It’s not like the usual Patrons warlocks get stuck with. It’s old. Impossibly old. I think it predates a lot of cultures. It doesn’t give me traditional magic or change my form or anything like that. But its power over spirits and its spiritual magic is unmatched. And it’s picky. It chose me. Sought me out.”

Casey asked the questions Finn always taught him to ask “Does it tempt you? Try to influence you? Do you feel like you?”

Yorrick shook her head “Like I said it isn’t like the usual Patron. It lets me do whatever I feel is right in the situation. It grants me its power and lets me decide what to do with it. If it has an agenda it hasn’t tried anything in the seven years I’ve been the Gravekeeper and as far as I can tell I’m still me.”

Normally Casey would be suspicious at this kind of response: Most warlock Patrons leaned more towards the chaotic and evil side than altruism. Good Patrons did exist such as celestial beings like angels or creatures such as unicorns but they were far in between the devils, demons, fae and whatever darker beings humanity had forgotten.

To be honest clerics and warlocks were not much different from each other in the sense they both served someone/thing’s purpose. The difference really came from power scale and intention. Gods and Goddesses were a fundamental part of existence, each keeping their domain in check and balanced so reality kept on being real. But their power only came from their followers and their belief in the deity. There was no such thing as empty faith. Pretend as you might, you either believed or you didn’t.

It was a feedback loop too. You believe in a higher power and the higher power granted you magic to further their will on earth to grant them more power to grant more of their followers magic. Rinse and repeat.

But you were not bound to a deity like warlocks were to their Patrons. You could freely leave a God’s service whenever you wish. It wasn’t uncommon for paladins and clerics of one deity to simply walk away and give up their magic. Sometimes they even began to worship another one. People change and so do their values.

Warlocks, on the other hand, couldn’t ever leave their service unless they had the foresight to add some sort of escape clause, completed their end of the deal or the Patron chose to release them. Patrons were not powerful beings of the universe but that didn’t mean they were pushovers. More middle ground between the Gods and regular folk. To become a warlock meant making an agreement with a powerful force than yourself and most people didn’t know how the rules of such deals worked. Sure you could have ancient knowledge or magic or even be able to shift into a monstrous form beyond human limitations but did you know if you break your deal, your Patron gets your soul? Or maybe they could ask a thousand tasks (yes this was a thing. Common too) of you and you must perform each lest you be driven mad. The cunning ones even knew how to snatch your very body from your control, giving them a puppet to further their goals without your pesky morals.

Casey would love to say he was exaggerating. He would really love to say these were the most extreme cases of being a warlock and not every Patron was up to these sneaky, underhanded deals but as Finn liked to say, loan sharks were rarely benevolent.

Still Casey believed Yorrick. She chose to wield the magic of the lantern for good and he has never seen whatever granted her magic try to control or manipulate her into some selfish endgame. The Lantern was neutral, neither good or evil in its intent which ironically made it one of the better Patrons. Much like death, it didn’t play favorites.

“How did you know that he was in mourning?” Casey asked curiously.

Yorrick stole a glance towards the door “Humans are complex messy creatures. Confusing, irrational and baffling. I never understood people. But death? Loss? I know that well. It’s in the eyes. One look and I knew I was staring at half a heart.”

‘Like me’ Casey thought to himself.

Outloud, however, Casey nodded agreement “Do you think the Lantern approves of it being used to bring peace to the living given it exclusively got magic over spirits?”

Yorrick snorted loudly “Like I care if it approves or not. Besides if we don’t take care of the living, who will remember the dead?”

Casey laughed “You are just full of wise proverbs huh?”

Yorrick snickered “I’m just saying how I see things. If they’re right or not.” She gave a casual shrug.

The door opened and Mister Langley walked out, eyes red and puffy but far more at peace than when they were brought in.

Neither Casey or Yorrick commented on his appearance.

“Thank you.” Daniel murmured softly “I. We. I don’t know how but thank you.”

“You’re welcome!” Yorrick replied simply, more small talk than giving a grieving husband closure.

Daniel leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper “My wife told me everything. About you, the…other world. I understand. You will bring it back?”

Yorrick nodded “It is very important for my task but I vow on my life to return the katana.”

A heavy silence filled the room for a moment before Yorrick added “Because I’d be dead if I don’t bring it back.” She turned to Casey “Was I clear? Was that obviously what I meant?”

“Yeah.” Casey grinned to himself “Very clear. Mister Langley you are taking the whole ‘this city has a supernatural side to it’ very well.”

“I suppose I noticed and decided it was too much trouble to pay it any mind. It is a lot to take in but you brought me peace. If that is the price I must pay, I shall gladly do so.” “Sooo you won’t get mad at me when I have distract the guards so Finn can investigate whatever the hell he has to look at for his cases?” Casey asked hopefully.

Daniel smiled in a way only a kind, loving grandfather could muster “No I won’t be mad.”

Casey let out a sigh of relief.

“Only severely annoyed.”

Casey clicked his tongue “You know what? Fair.”

Daniel suppressed a laugh as best as he could “Now, before I give you the sword, may I ask where you two are going? It would make searching for it much easier on myself if something were to happen to you two.”

“Oh sure!” Yorrick beamed cheerfully “Litwick Forest.”

Casey stared blankly ahead, Yorrick’s words thundering in his ears. He slowly turned to face the Gravekeeper.

“Oh you got to be fucking kidding me.”
