another thing abt krystal with a k and the steepy podcast at the beginning: bloggers of that level are absolutely known and manipulated by a theme park company like that. disney food blog might pay for themselves and claim to do honest reporting, but they are often at media releases, and have the company’s best interests in mind. bloggers like them aren’t going to seriously disparage the company they are making their living off of. however, they’re still not directly working for disney themselves. krystal with a k is probably extremely in the know about some stuff, and definitely gets invited to/told about new attractions before the general populace, but she’s not working directly for dentonic. she’s just seriously enthusiastic and has monetized that enthusiasm.

just did an escape room and man i love them so much...it's so interesting to me how much a physical escape room environment adds to the experience versus those board game versions (which i also like!)

i love seeing the ways people use physical environments to enhance puzzles, and set up satisfying tactile inputs for puzzles especially. my fave room i ever did had a thing where there is like a big old timey ring of keys locked away from you through bars. like one of these:

and then you get a big stick. and have to poke it through the bars, hook the ring of keys and slide it over to where you can grab it. and that just delights my brain like nothing else

and my friends always make fun of me for how excited I get if a room involves a magnet but like. magnet! there's a key stuck at the bottom of a thing where you can see it but not grab it. the excitement of realising one of the components you've been given is a magnet...unparalleled

i think it's so fun how certain ways of manipulating an environment are just instinctively delightful. i think I've done multiple rooms where there's a big old fancy desk and when you solve a puzzle the back panel of the desk opens! and turns out it's a little tunnel you can crawl through! that's instinctively fun in the same way a secret bookcase door is fun

one room i did involved having to pour water in order to access certain things like...needing to use particular physical actions to solve a problem makes me feel like this guy:

big levers! little hidden switches! it's the best

i also just love being set loose in an environment in which rummaging is not only acceptable but necessary. you've gotta rummage. you've gotta search through those drawers and reach into little hidey holds and find stuff. i think my puzzling skills are not actually much above average but i am an exceptional rummager

most times when people tell me they don't like/want to do an escape room it's because they think they're bad at puzzles. which i think most of the time what they mean is that they don't like puzzles, and it's more polite to be self-deprecating than to outright say they don't like the thing I like, which is fine

but i think escape rooms are fun bc they perfectly demonstrate that you and everyone you know are both very dumb and the smartest person in the world. everyone's brain works differently and some puzzles will click for you perfectly and others will be incomprehensible.

today i had the experience of actually understanding how a puzzle worked but being incapable of communicating it in words. and then trying to succinctly while under time pressure communicate to my friends "my brain allows me to understand this puzzle but not to articulate anything about how it works in words. please just trust me and turn those cranks when i say." and similarly I've made it out of rooms where i would have no idea how to solve a particular puzzle in there, but i don't need to bc my friends' brains are different to mine and they've Got This

Is anyone also just so fucking obsessed with roller coasters? It's kind of surprising how truly into them I am. Roller coasters probably enter my mind at least once every hour or so. I watch YouTube videos about them all the time (about half my recommended is enthusiast channels). I randomly dump facts on unenthusiastic friends. I start wondering who made a certain coaster or ride or model or part or park and then have to go track down the answer.

It started with me watching a few Defunctland videos, then Expedition Theme Park, then some reviews of my home park, and then Airtime Thrills and eventually the rest of coaster YouTube. I just find it all so interesting. The science, the innovation, the whole business. I love thinking about the logistics of different rides and parks and wondering what I'd do if I managed my own park.

Anyways, here's my little rant about one of my interests because I've bothered everyone I know irl too much already.

my guilty pleasure is watching cruise ship review videos on youtube (I've never been on a cruise ship and probably never will), like idk i think they're kinda dumb and lame but it's like watching a completley different and worse world with very weird people doing weird things on a boat they cannot leave with a bunch of strangers

I wish I could find more information on the construction of the Hatbox Ghost. I keep finding information about how the effect was botched due to proximity to the ride cars but like... I can't find info on if they tried a scrim. It seems like it would have been such an easy fix as a scrim is designed to appear opaque when a light shines from the front and transparent when lit from the back. They're not perfect of course but they're convincing enough under stage lights. Haunted mansion is a dark ride, literally perfect place for it. Or they could have done a modified Pepper's Ghost by having the hat resting on a table with a tablecloth instead of in hand.

30 hours of painting is finally complete - the Thi13teen eye is finally done! First of my ride eye series. I plan to eventually do eyes inspired by all of the rides at Towers, but that’s going to take a lot of time [and work]!
