Wurstelprater in October New Public Collectors publication! Available for $9.00 here. Public Collectors publication #81 takes a trip to an amusement park in Vienna just days before many of the attractions closed for the season. From the back cover:

When the Vienna Art Book Fair’s Director Marlene Obermayer invited the publishing imprint I co-run, Half Letter Press, to participate in the 2023 edition of the event, she generously booked a hotel room for me. Last time the fair was held in 2019, the hotel was a short stroll to the fair. This time it was about a 25 minute walk. She explained, “Its not the same like last time but also a really nice one (next to the famous PRATER).” I wondered why I had never heard of the Prater and meant to look it up before my trip. In the frenzy of packing books, I never got around to that. Instead I found out when I arrived.

Founded in 1766, the Prater includes a massive amusement park (Wurstelprater) filled with dozens of garish rides, an enormous Ferris wheel, tests of strength and skill, bizarre sculptures and gnarly ride facades covering every surface, and a variety of restaurants and other delights. You don’t have to pay to get in—there’s just a fee for whatever rides and games you want to enjoy. You can walk through the park any time, including before it opens, which I did on the way to and from the fair every morning and evening. At night it’s a whole other reality with dazzling lights, pounding music, and rides whipping bodies in every direction, testing any visitor’s ability to hold in their wurst. As one YouTube video-maker commented, the Prater “feels like a carnival on steroids.”

These photos were taken in the third week of October, just days before most of the rides would shut down for the season. The Wurstelprater is a fully immersive experience that could never be fully documented in all of its countless details. Anyone thinking this booklet might ruin the surprise of visiting for the first time should know that I have barely scratched the surface.

You stood in front of the mirror, staring at your clothes. No, it was summer, you didn’t need to wear a hoodie. You took your hoodie off, leaving you with a simple cotton shirt and sport pants. At least you wouldn’t be sweating now.

Your phone screen turned bright, a single notification grabbing your eyes. You picked up your phone, looking at the message from your girlfriend.

Nami<3: Hey, I’m downstairs. You ready to go?

You: In a minute.

Nami<3: You’re so slow. You wearing comfortable clothing?

You: Yep.

Nami<3: Good. Now hurry up, you slowpoke,

You chuckled at her message, as you grabbed your jacket, putting on your shoes.

You: I’m coming down now.

You made your way down, finding Nami’s car, and most importantly, the love of your life in the driver’s seat. You stepped inside the car, taking a seat in the passenger’s seat. Before a word could come out of your mouth, Nami’s lips were against yours, her hands on your cheeks. Nami broke the kiss with a giggle, the corners of her mouth stretched up to her eyes.

“Slowpoke.” Nami grinned.

“I made it, didn’t I?” You chuckled, looking into those sunset eyes. You tried not to stare into those sunset eyes; it wasn’t your first time being captured and drawn into the beauty and glory inside your girlfriend’s eyes.

Nami playfully tapped your nose, causing you to snap out of that mesmerizing trance. “You have plenty of time later to drool, Y/N. Put on your seatbelt, we’re going to be late.”

You listened to her, putting on your seatbelt as Nami started the car.

“Where are we even going? All you did was send me a text and said ‘I’ll be at your house in fifteen minutes, get changed.’ It’s 8AM.”

“It’s a surprise~”

“The last time you surprised me we went to a haunted house where I punched one of the actors.”

“Okay, that was because it was Halloween, and it’s not on me if you punched that zombie, even though it was really funny.” Nami let out a giggle at that memory.

“We had to pay, Nami.”

“Oh, it’s fine. I’m willing to spend money on such a gorgeous beauty like you.”

A small grin grew on your face, as you continued the drive in silence. Nami played the music from your playlist you had created together, with all your favorite songs in it. Soon after, the two of you pulled up into an amusement park, the one you had been begging Nami to go to with you. You were a fan of amusement parks; you were an adrenaline junkie. You’d stuff three churros all into your mouth, and then go on a ride with there loop-de-loops and two sudden drops. Nami didn’t share your same level of interest and adrenaline you had, so she’d always go on the slow paced rides and simply wait for you to finish the much faster paced rides. If Nami was going to take you to the amusement park of your dreams…

The minute Nami had parked the car, you ripped your seatbelt off, leaping out of the car as you ran to the other side, waiting for Nami to get out. She grabbed a small bag, gently closing the car door and pressing a button on her car keys.

“Come on! Let’s go! All the rides are going to have long lines!” You squealed, basically dragging Nami’s hand into the amusement park.

“Relax! I got fast passes! You don’t need to dash to the lines!’ You stumbled, tripping over your shoes as you stared at Nami. Your jaw was glued to the floor, eyes almost popping out of your sockets. Nami laughed at your expression, as she placed a finger on your chin, gently closing your mouth and placing a hat on your head.

“I don’t want you getting sunburnt, mkay?” Nami explained. You didn’t care. She could make you wear a snowsuit in the summer and you wouldn’t care. She took you to your favorite amusement park, and she bought fast passes for you. Was it all for you?

Before you could take another step and absolutely destroy your legs, you pressed your lips against Nami’s wrapping your hands around your neck. You didn’t care that you were in public and people saw you. You didn’t care. Your girlfriend had just given you the best present ever.

“You’re the best girlfriend ever!” You cheered, smiling at her. Nami smiled back, pressing a gentle kiss on your cheek.

“I know I am.” Nami grinned, fishing something out of her bag. “Turn around.”

You obliged. Nami took your hair, tying it in a ponytail and putting it through the cap before turning you around herself. “Good. You can run off, now. I know you want to.”

Your shoes were already turned towards the direction of the first ride, but your legs didn’t move. You offered your hand to Nami, a smile on your face. “I want to go with you!”

Nami smiled warmly, taking your hand as the two of you began to walk inside the park. “Aw, you’re so sweet.”

“I know I am.” You giggled.

“To think I purposefully got an airtag for you so that I can track your location.”

“Yeah- Wait what? You have an airtag?”

“What do you think is in your hair, dear Y/N?”

You blinked, your hand sneaking up to your ponytail, feeling a familiar metal disk object hidden between the layers of your hair. “Why did you do that?”

“So I can track your location on my phone throughout the entire park without having to try and catch up to you, you speed demon.”

A pang of guilt entered your heart. You knew you could be the speed of light if you truly wanted, leaving Nami in your dust. You held her hand, intertwining your fingers. “I’m going to be slow! I don’t want to leave you behind. I wanna have fun with you. It’s not fun by myself. I would rather be with you.”

Nami smiled, putting her head on your shoulder as the two of you continued to walk. “Aw, really, my speed demon?”

“Mhm!”

Nami chuckled softly, shaking her head. After a few minutes of silence, Nami spoke up again. “You really want to run, don’t you?”

“I really do.” You admitted, immediately shaking your head. “But I’m not going to run off! That’s my promise for the entire day!”

The two of you walked at Nami’s pace, as you explored shops, went on rides, doing everything together. When the sky had turned dark, you were completely exhausted, legs ready to fall off. Even though you had matched Nami’s pace, that had allowed you to explore more places you had never seen, taking so many photos you maxed out your iCloud storage. Moreover, both your hands and Nami’s were filled with souvenirs and things you had bought from all the stores, 50% of which you’d discard the next day.

Nami had wanted to go on the ferris wheel, as the last ride before the two of you went home. Well, before Nami would drop you back off at her home. So you sat in the seat next to her, intertwining fingers as the wheel began to move. Nami rested her head on your shoulder, as the two of you admired the amusement park from above, the flashing neon lights shining for miles on end.

You turned your head towards your equally tired girlfriend, planting a small kiss on her head. Nami looked up at you, a sleepy smile on her face. “What was that for?”

“For paying for everything here, and being the best girlfriend in the world. Thank you for spending the money and time with me to come here.”

Nami looked at you, that same look that always made your legs shaky and heart start to thump. She squeezed your hand. “Aw, you really are the sweetest.”

“No, you are.”

You giggled at each other. You looked into those sunset eyes, those eyes that made you first fall in love with Nami, the eyes that brought you to where you were now. Your heart began to thud, a thought creeping up into your head.

“Hey… Nami…?” You said, looking into her eyes, your thoughts growing louder than the sound of the machinery moving.

“Yes, my dear sweet Y/N?” Nami responded, smiling at you.

“I know we’ve been dating for quite a while…but we’ve never said something really really important to each other.”

“Oh? What is it?”

“Nami,” You took a deep breath, still encapsulated by those sunset eyes. “I love you.”

The corners of her mouth reached her eyes, as she wrapped her arms around your neck, kissing you deeply on your lips. Your foreheads touched, noses squished against each other.

Nami broke the kiss, your foreheads still touching and her arms around your neck. You stared at each other, your eyelashes brushing against hers.

“I love you too, my sweet Y/N.” Nami whispered. “You’re my girlfriend, you’re the love of my life. I love you so much.”

“Yeah?” You giggled. “Would you tell the whole world you love me?”

“I would. I love you, Y/N.”

“You only said that to me.

“Because you are my whole world.”
