Classic BL Inspirations in Captive Prince?
Full disclosure, I was cleaning out my drafts and rediscovered this old ass post lol. It was originally going to be much longer and include works like Zetsuai 1989 and Ai No Kusabi, but I lost steam while writing it so instead you just get the Kaze to Ki no Uta part LOL.
Fun fact unrelated to Capri since I’m also on a bit of a Berserk kick, this manga was also a big influence on Kentaro Miura.
Kaze to Ki no Uta
Kaze to Ki no Uta was written in 1976 by Keiko Takemiya, and is one of the manga credited as bringing boys love, or BL, into the mainstream in Japan. It’s a tragic love story between Serge (right) and Gilbert (left) that takes place at a prestigious French boarding school.
This manga was a MASSIVE influence on BL for decades after its publication. Lots of early BL by artists like Takemiya were about these unearthly beautiful boys, and much of early BL dealt with very dark themes such as incest, rape, and child abuse.
Gilbert has some things in common with Laurent while also still being a very distinct character. Gilbert is described as cruel while hiding deep pain due to being molested by his uncle. There’s also the obvious visual similarity - Serge is a mixed race boy with a Romani mother (like Damen, who is canonically dark skinned) while Gilbert is pale and blonde. However, unlike Laurent, Gilbert expresses his trauma through sexual promiscuity with older students, while of course Laurent pushes away all sexual contact.
The main antagonist, Auguste (heh) Beau also has very similar vibes to the regent. He is a powerful figure in French society, and he openly abuses and manipulates his nephew, Gilbert. Gilbert, much like is implied about young Laurent, genuinely believes that he and his uncle are in love, which Auguste exploits.
There’s also random similarities too. Of course Auguste being the uncle’s name is one thing, and also the main action of the story takes place in the city of Arles. Arles is a real city in France, though, so who knows if that’s just coincidence

Does anyone remember this very weird yaoi OVA called zetsuai 1989? Apparently, its manga never got a proper ending. The manga creator fell ill and then it just got continued in a doujinshi created by the og creator herself (so, why is wiki calling it a dj? Idk). And from the title of the dj, it looks like the characters died together or something.
The reason I got reminded of this odd piece of media is coz I was actually reading a very good of media before, called Smyrna & Capri. I am really enjoying this story. But my brain suddenly went: hmm...you know theo and seth remind of this very old yaoi anime I once watched with a white haired popstar becoming obsessed with a soccer player. I couldn't remember the name but one Google search of "yaoi anime 90s soccer player popstar" and boom... zetsuai 1989 in the results LOL
Now, I remember the art style being very odd. Razor sharp pointy jaws, 80% legs characters. And that the popstar became so unhealthily obsessed with the soccer player that he might have tried to kill himself. I have half a mind of watching the OVA again. I just...idk this story was so odd. Everything about it felt very weird but strangely artsy.

Oh do NOT read it its an abomination to what is considered decent literature but its basically this batshit rockstar koji stumbles upon this soccer / association football player izumi who like has a rage trauma flashback on the field + koji falls hard at first sight n orchestrated a situation where izumi finds him in the dumps n has to nurture him but izumi sis is like wtf. isnt that the famous rockstar koji+ koj is convinced that the sis is who he liked but its rly the dude. everything goes wrong from there

Koji Nanjo, a young rock star, falls in love with soccer player Takuto Izumi. Koji eventually learns that Izumi's mother killed his father out of severe and intense love. Izumi took all the guilt for his father's murder and refuses to go pro because of fear that his past will be discovered by the media. Izumi detests Koji's company and encouragement and severely dislikes the attention from the press, but Koji cannot stay away for he soon realizes that his love for Izumi is very similar to the love that Izumi's mother felt for his father.
This is my definitely favorite old obscure yaoi anime, although the story is ok, I would say what really pulls me in into this anime is the character Nanjo Koji, he is an outstanding character in terms of him being the greatest possessive/obsessive seme of all times, and I will die on this hill! It's not everyone's cup of tea, but Bronze is certainly mine.
