What did the Russos say about CACW?
From the foreword to The Art of Captain America: Civil War
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We've got to be honest: Captain America was never our favorite super hero growing up. While there was certainly something to admire in a fictional character invented to fight Hitler before his country joined the real war, the story of Steve Rogers didn't completely win us over. His strength and toughness were inspiring, but there was something about his unshakable moral certainty, his overwhelming mix of patriotism and propaganda, that left us wanting a little more complexity and a little more edge. For kids like us growing up in the '70s and '80s, the character had fallen out of sync with the times. He was a black-and-white character in a gray world. To counter that feeling, we would try to imagine him as Steve McQueen in an effort to lend him a coolness that excited us. We were kids looking for a way to love the character.
Of all the good fortune we've had in our careers, nothing tops being invited by Marvel Studios to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The movie drew its inspiration from a comic run written by Ed Brubaker, and while that run missed our childhoods, it reinterpreted the character in exactly the way we had been wanting. Now we were being given the opportunity to do in a movie what we had dreamt of as fanboys: texturing and even subverting the patriot through a story that led him to question his country and break orders.
For us, Captain America: Civil War is the completion of that subversion. The film moves Steve Rogers past the flaws in his country to finally confront the flaws in himself. This is what makes him a true hero in the classical sense. Despite all the greatness he is capable of, he is flawed, and he is human. And this is a Captain America that we can love.
We couldn't have made this film without the talents and vision of our many collaborators, and we are deeply grateful to them. This book represents some of their work. We hope you enjoy it as we have.

from the Thawne Timetravel au with @windona "Bart licked cinnamon off his fingers one at a time as he polished off a third cronut. Meloni smiled, breaking her own in half and shifting her plate so he could reach, if he wanted. Her tea was warm, and it was almost easy to relax, listening to the clink of spoons against mugs or the scrape of chairs. “Mrs. Watson’s reading us a new book during After-Lunch,” Bart reported, tugging the cronut half across the table to his own plate. “And we got new art stuff for while she reads.” “That’s nice, what book?” Meloni asked, tuning out the bustle. “Matilda,” Bart said. “I like it.  Oh, and she said --” he put the pastry down, digging in his backpack’s front pocket, “uh, that there’s teacher conferences soon?” The paper he produced was several days old. “You gotta go so they’ll let me do hard math. If I have to do just borrowing i’m gonna diiiiiie.” “No one has ever died because of a subtraction worksheet, I promise.” Meloni laughed at the expression on her son’s face. She reached over to wipe a bit of whipped cream off his nose.

The Spear-Verse (Character Studies & Extras) He is their leader, both nominally and in fact, but his leadership is a relaxed one.
The Name That Calls You Home The youngest was buried under a mountain of blankets. Did Yoshi even own that many blankets?
Spear-Verse Scraps Ignoring the wind that seemed determined to throw her hair in her face, Sassy tossed her hair over her shoulder before aiming an amused look at Leonardo. “You know you’re not going to talk me out of this, right?”
They Knew They knew. Lori and Blubber might have always known, at least as soon as they got to know La’gaan: he was an orphan.
An Equal And Opposite Reaction “Why did you do that?” It was a fair question, in all honesty. It wasn’t exactly like it was normal practice to walk into a room to see one’s teammate stapling a jellyfish beanie baby to a coffee table. With an industrial-grade staple-gun no less.
Mosaic Shards Falling Into Place The first time La’gaan met Eddie, the pyrokinetic immediately set him on edge.
An Island, Adrift “Son-of-a-ba’athu-kest!” La’gaan roared as he punched the barrier. The pearlescent not-quite-transparent barrier rippled, but like the last ten-or-so things they’d tried to break through, it did nothing.
Steamed Kisegra Eddie was fit, fast, and flexible— all things La’gaan was aware of due to their various sparring sessions and working together out in the field.
A Sea-Rose By Any Other Name If there was one thing Eddie could never get enough of, it was getting to touch La’gaan, to get up close and personal so he could see the varying shades of the green of his scales, to feel the sleek silkiness over toned muscle under his hands in one direction and the slight rasp if his hands went against the way La’gaan’s scales laid.
Ripples In Fire And Sea It had been a long day, and as Eddie approached the pier he stretched his arms up over his head.

Summary: Jaime and Virgil find themselves annoyed at Geoforce acting like he's the leader of the Outsiders to the press. Khaji Da, having learned restraint with Jaime, asks to play a prank, even playing it on Virgil's old mentor as well. After all, a cell phone receiving the wrong texts and calls shouldn't be a big deal, right?
It's not like people are communicating major secrets, after all.

@windona Prompt: AU where Gregor found out about Tara being a double agent during s3 from Markovian intelligence
Gregor was pulled out of the mindless cycle of paperwork that had laid in stacks across his desk by a knock at the door. He barely looked up as he called for whoever was on the other side to come in, expecting that it was a currier with more seemingly never-ending papers needing his signature or a servant that was sent to remind him that food was not optional and that the kitchens had lunch waiting for him in a room that was purposely far away from his office and work. But when he looked up and was greeted by the looming figures of General Ivanov of special military operations and Minister Arpa of Intelligence the young man was left fumbling for a moment.
The general was a familiar face he had grown to trust in the weeks following his parent’s assignation, his uncles attempted to grab at the thrones, and the unpleasantness that followed both and left this too large castle impossible silent. However, the Minister was a less familiar, less comforting presence.
The thing about Minister Arpa is that the man had as much of a personality as you would imagine the head of a country's intelligence organization would have and must have spent so much time shifting through the shadows of this world that he looked much like he hadn’t touched grass since the Cold War. And he didn’t wander far back into the world of the light unless catastrophe was at hand. “What’s wrong?” Gregor asks, getting to his feet as he tries to steady the rapid beating in his chest. “Did something happen?”
“It’s more of a personal matter, sir.” General Inanov said, almost trying to reassure the young king.
The Minster let out a short grunt, “Yes, his personal matter had the capability to severely threaten the security of Markovia.”
“We don’t know that,” The General retorted, “Mans Karalis, we have some delegate information.”
“I’ve gathered,” Gregor said, pressing his palms into his desk, trying to wrap his head around what the two men could be arguing about. What in his life could possibly be a threat to his country? “What is it?”
“We followed your orders to look after the Princesses' activities while she was in America.” The Minster said quickly.
“Is she ok?” Gregor asked, panicking to be acceptable for someone in his position. “She hasn’t been hurt, has she? She’s safe?”
“She’s unharmed.” General Inanov said, “Over the past months our intelligence services have been going over the information provided by the Justice League on the Princess’s captures, and have taken a particular interest in Slade Wilson.”
The name ranges through his head, pulling at the memories of the phone calls with his brother that have come more naturally and frequently to the rescue of Tara. His sister hadn’t told him much of her life when she was under the control of the shadows, but that one name stuck out to him as the only man he knew hurt her, and as such, became the sole product of his resentment.
“He's a former US special forces officer but our American counterparts have been resistant to tell us more about his service record.” The minister added. We have had little success tracing his movements until satellite imaging spotted him in Hollywood near the princess' new residence.”
Gregor straightened, fear making home of his bones, “Are they trying to take her back?” the words fumbled haphazardly from his mouth.
The Minister shook his head. '`We have proof that he has been in conversation with the princess, who appears to be doing so willingly while accepting some form of technology from him, similar to a controller chip.’
“He’s still controlling her though those infernal devices?”
“No, Mans Karalis, he was giving it to her to use later. Personally, someone else.” Arpa laid a manilla folder on his desk, pulling out imagery that confirmed his words. “We think that the Princess is willingly engaged with him.”
The heart that had refused to settle in his chest stopped for a moment. “I need to call my brother.” He whispered.
“Mans Karalis?” The general asked but Gregor had already moved to his feet and from the desk, rushing past the men and towards the door, trying his best to steady his body and mind as both threatened to give out as he tried to process this information.
“We just got her back.” He muttered to himself. “I thought we had gotten her back.”

adoption and heroes
I wanna talk about the prevalence of adoption in superhero stories, because I could name a longer list of people tat have adopted in superhero fiction than I could in m real life. And part of that is the difficult hoops that they make to adopt (to ensure that the already traumatized child being adopted wont be abused) but most of it is because adoption is a truly heroic act tat not everyone is capable of doing. -I will die on the hill that good superhero stories are hero fantasies and NOT power fantasies. It makes sense that this everyday form of heroism will make its was into heroic stories, either by the hero participating in it themselves or by having it be a heroic act that was modeled to them by their parents.
I would love anyone else input on this.

I know the MCU is your wheelhouse, but given you like comics as well have you read any? Find it interesting or just don't particular care given the different continuities?
I've read Loki: Agent of Asgard and really enjoyed it; I own this one in hard copy and there are references to it in my fic. I bounced really hard of the Loki Journey into Mystery comics by Kieron Gillen and have never finished them. Gillen has the problem -- and this is true in Star Wars, in DIE, in The Wicked + The Divine, so it's just him at this point -- of doing something that in theory I really really like, but then doing it in a way I really, really hate, so I have learned not to read Gillen anymore. I haven't read any Loki comics since, but that's just me not being in the mood.
I also read the Thor: God of Thunder comics (by Jason Aaron) that deal with Gorr the God-Butcher and I think the lead-up to War of the Realms, but not actual War of the Realms. (I think this is the 2012 one?) I unfortunately really liked the comics arc that deals with Gorr, which is unfortunate Thor Love and Thunder is very, very different in the way that it deals with that arc. (It's the multiverse era! this is the perfect time to do time travel bullshit with multiple Thors! Hemsworth is good enough to pull it off!) I tried to read Mighty Thor but unfortunately I really really disliked it (Jason Aaron is really hit and miss with me).
I read Ms Marvel and the Fraction Hawkeye back in the day around when they were first coming out (in trades) and were really being talked about in fandom circles, so like...ten years ago, possibly more, and I reread them at some point in the last couple years; I own them in hardcopy back at my parents' place so it would have been probably summer 2021 or 2022. They're fine, I don't have strong feelings about them. I was reading Runaways when it was coming out in TPB -- when I was in high school, actually, so mid/late-'00s, didn't keep up with it, was keeping up with new Runaways for a while when it started again a few years back, but it's a lot of effort to keep up with comics, you know?
There's other Marvel comics I've read; I will go through phases every couple years where I read comics, but there's a base level of knowledge that tends to make it difficult, plus the eternal problem of same title, same number, different comic. Some of Marvel I know enough that I can more or less just jump in -- I went through all of Astonishing X-Men some years back, because I know enough about the X-Men that I could do that -- but not everything by a long shot, and it's really hard to figure out what is actually supposed to be good. (especially when everything has the same name.) I have actually had an easier time with it in DC rather than Marvel -- not that I read a lot of DC and it may just have more to do with what specific comics I picked up, which were Gotham Academy and Wonder Woman Rebirth, which are both pretty standalone. (I have read other DC comics, not recently; DC as a universe just doesn't do it for me, which is why I'm over here in Marvel instead.)
I have read indies, I read WicDiv and Saga and Motor Crush and tried a few others that didn't stick with me. I don't read comics very often, especially since Amazon killed Comixology. (though I do have a comics reader app that I really like, but that requires I go hunt down the specific comic in .cbr or .cbz.) For a very long time, I kept up with all the canon Star Wars comics (I think I still have all the flimsies bagged and boarded from the first year 2015-2016, maybe into 2017, including some pretty rare variant covers that I'll get priced at some point in my life), and there are a lot of EU Star Wars comics I really, really love, like Knights of the Old Republic and Legacy and the Ostrander/Duursema Republic/Clone Wars comics. I actually did grow up reading comics, but I grew up reading my dad's comics from when he was a kid, and these were not Marvel or DC comics, these were the old Gold Key Tarzan comics, so it took a really, really long time to break me of hearing "comics" and immediately thinking "Tarzan." No one ever means "Tarzan" when they say "comics," they mean "superheroes." (I also grew up reading Edgar Rice Burroughs novels. I tell people this and they go "this explains everything about you.")
In Marvel I also have the problem of being really attached to the MCU versions of most of the characters, which makes the entry level of getting into those characters' comics really difficult for me because I already have strong feelings about specific versions of those characters that don't exist in the comics -- Black Widow and Captain America are the big two here. (Don't ask me why I have an easier time with Thor and Loki, I don't know.) I've never read a Black Widow comic, I don't know if it would go well or if it would go poorly; it may go fine or it may be too much of a discrepancy that it will be impossible for me to read. Same with Cap. (But like, feel free to rec BW and Cap comics to me if you think that for whatever reason they'll work for me, just bear in mind I hate BuckyNat, which limits a lot of BW comics.)
One of the things that has for a very long time been a strength of the MCU has been that the less you know about the comics, the better the viewing experience actually is; every time they've leaned really hard on prior comics knowledge it's backfired on them (AoU, Loki "Journey into Mystery," parts of Hawkeye, DSMOM, the frickin' "Avengers Assemble" line in Endgame that I hate, Captain Marvel in general, Ms. Marvel is also a serious offender here, unfortunately). So in a lot of ways as a MCU fan, it's easier and even preferable to not know things about the comics, especially because nothing translates 1:1 and if you expect it to, you'll be disappointed. (see: why I have been avoiding TLAT, because I love the Gorr arc in the comics.) I see a lot of people in the fandom going "why don't they do [comics thing], XYZ is (comics) canon, they're just ignoring canon" and it's like...no they're not, that does not exist as canon in the MCU, you can't make that assumption, we made this very clear back in 2008. (BuckyNat my beloathed. Same for Loki/Sigyn. Or in a less ship way, people going "well, THIS is Bruce Banner's REAL backstory" or "this is a FAKE Yelena.") So it also kind of puts me off knowing things about the comics, though I am on Wiki a lot looking up background details to use in fic, but in the same way the MCU does, the "I am going to use this as a kernel to build off of," not straight 1:1 adaptation. This is going to sound super petty, but I will say it anyway: I also at this point will nope out of reading fic if it's very clear that the author is using comics backstory over the MCU canon. (Even if it's an old fic that predates the new canon, it is now just unreadable to me.) Like, you do you, but it's just what I can't read. I can't read most MCU fic in general anymore anyway.
I feel like lately I've been circling around doing another comics reading phase; I don't think I read any in 2022 (other than the MCU movie prequel comics), but I read Agent of Asgard and Thor: God of Thunder in 2021, so I'm probably about due, it does tend to be about every other year. I don't know, what's good right now that I probably wouldn't hate?

Rules: post the names of the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have wips. (You can make your own post or reblog this one!)  I have deemed that this isn’t just for writing either. Sketch titles? Comics? Dnd campaigns? If you have an unfinished project, it counts!!
I don't really have a WIP folder but I do have a rotation of WIP idea fics I am eternally working on. Ask away!

20 First lines
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories.  See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Then tag 10 authors!
@windona BITCH I'VE GOT, LIKE, FIVE STORIES AND YOU GONNA TAG ME IN THIS? Now I gotta dig through all my trash for something to post.
Salvage Operation/Reconstruction: Ace wasn’t sure how long he’d been searching for Luffy, but by the time he’d found him at the cliffs that sat at the base of Mount Corvo, the sun had just finished hitting its peak and was beginning to make its descent.
stormy weather: Law stared at the blank screen, expression frozen in a twisted smile.
Untitled AceLaw fic: The most irritating part of traveling the Grand Line as a doctor was that everyone for some reason expected him to be an expert in every related field.
Landlocked Blues: Law watched impassively as the Straw Hats and the Kid Pirates loaded their boats. ((rough rough draft))
Bounty hunter fic: Alabasta wasn’t an easy place to live. (??? also, the roughest of rough drafts)
A New Hope, from the ghost lights series: Izuku waits every day after school at Gran Torino’s flat.
search/i've got something in my eye, from the ghost lights series: “I don’t know what you want from me. You probably know more than I do,” Bakugo gritted out.
fucker's got it out for me: Bakugo will acknowledge, on some level, he’s made more than a few mistakes in life--and he’s pretty sure this fuckass vigilante has made it his personal mission to witness every single one/as many as he possibly can.
Bakugo Fucking Dies: Bakugo has always been the worst roommate. He breaks your stuff, throws things everywhere, ruins your electronics, and constantly leaves angry messages on the mirror. Not much has changed since he died.
salad days, from the Cold War Kids series: Gabriel was always braced for the rough transition between schools.
untitled mcgenji murder roadtrip: Once regarded as one of the most powerful families of Japan, the Shimada name no longer carries any weight.
someone to hold you to close: He’s being watched.
Untitled work, from the Professional Misconduct series: The Korcari Wilds had been a wretched experience.
Roads Less Traveled from the Professional Misconduct series: It had been almost fortnight since Aveline had managed to fight her way tooth and nail out of the massacre that took place at Ostagar.
Hetairae (?): Even though it was warm enough indoors that he could almost feel himself beginning to sweat, Hawke felt mildly chilly.
F5, can’t remember the title: As far as his criminal history went, Wally was pretty simple.
F4, The Sting: Wally woke up early in the morning.
F3, Network: Wally wasn’t really sure what he expected out of another encounter with Robin.
F2, Marathon: There were maybe a little over two hundred students in the auditorium, which was probably an average size for an introductory course to psychology.
F1, The New Kid on the Block: There was an outsider trespassing in Central.
I was trying so desperately hard to find work and push Fedora Verse off the list because that story just fills me up with so much anxiety now, but I ended up just rounding it off to a perfect 20 instead. Was nice, if a little embarrassing, to see the progress I've made over 7 years of writing at least. But jesus christ I have to write more. If this list had been any shorter, I would've been posting, like, my high school Naruto fanfiction and facing the reality of my writing history. I'm just not strong enough. Not tagging anyone because this is just plain hurtful, but if anyone's interested in this meme, go for it!
