TRAINTOBER | Day 8 - Bird
Bittern insults Duck. Bittern soon learns that Sodor has laws of karma.
Tumblr media
~~~
“What’s wrong there bluebird?” Duck asked as he sidled up beside the enormous LNER A4 Pacific that was perched on one of the sidings near Haultraugh. Said Pacific humphed and threw him a glare.
“Don’t call me that, little engine, only good friends get to call me that,” Bittern scolded but Duck just grinned.
“You just don’t like that I’m calling you a bird,” Duck teased and Bittern tried to burn through the pannier tank engine’s tanks with his glare.
“You think you can sass me just because you’re City of Truro’s favourite little engine?” Bittern sneered at him and Duck just laughed.
“I’d sass you regardless of if I was or not,” Duck retorted and grinned. “So, why don’t you like birds? You’re named after a bird.”
“It’s none of your business!” Bittern shouted at the Little Western Engine. “Go away you insignificant pest!”
Duck’s jovial expression fell and he glared at the LNER A4.
“Watch yourself LNER engine, being rude to the engines on Sodor typically doesn’t end well for those who do,” the Pannier Tank warned before he trundled off with his trucks who giggled as they passed the puffed-up express engine.
Bittern just snorted and thought nothing of it.
Oh, how he would come to regret it.
~~~
“Your friend isn’t very nice,” Duck complained as he found the Flying Scotsman napping at Ulfstead Castle. Scotsman opened one eye and observed the angry Duck.
“I assume you’re referring to Bittern,” the sleepy A3 mumbled as he eyed him.
“Yes! He called me an insignificant pest!” Duck snapped angrily. “I just asked him why he didn’t like birds!”
“Oh he’s afraid of birds and doesn’t want people to know about it,” Scotsman revealed and Duck stopped in his tracks and stared ahead ignoring the fact the Scotsman had closed his eye and seemingly drifted back to sleep again.
"Right then," was all Duck said as he left as quickly as he came. He did not notice the devious grin that had appeared on the 'sleeping' Flying Scotsman as he did so.
~~~
“What is that!” Bittern shrieked as he became aware of something in his tender shuffling around. His driver sighed having a good idea what it was.
“It’s just a duck,” he explained with a tired sigh before quickly throwing Bittern the now shrieking A4 Pacific into reverse to prevent him from flattening the shed doors.
“Scotsman! This was Scotsman!” Bittern screeched. "He's playing another one of his damn tricks!"
“Oh calm down would ya!” Douglas shouted back at him. “Is just a duck, these ducks be engine friendly for decades.”
“They’re awful feathered monsters!” Bittern shrieked and the Scottish engine sighed completely deflated as the ‘big, strong, powerful Pacific’ began carrying on like a child.
Douglas would have some choice words for a certain ‘Duck’ when the day was done.
~~~
If there are only two things Scotsman loves it is; 1) The City of Truro. 2) Trolling Bittern any way he possibly can but especially by proxy.

The Great Race Part 2
Narrator: That night at Tidmouth Sheds, all the engines were talking about the Great Railway Show.
Thomas: Can you imagine if any of us actually get a chance to compete?
Percy: I think you would do a great job if shunting was an event Thomas.
Edward: Did you hear what any of the events would be, Thomas?
Thomas: I only heard the famous, Flying Scotsman say that there's going to be a racing event.
James (laughing): Oh we know Gordon would want to compete in that. He'd love to have the chance to show off.
(Henry rolls his eyes.)
Henry: It's not as if you wouldn't want to show off your paintwork, James.
James: Ha! I'm sure the judges would love to see my glorious paintwork.
Emily: I do think you would do an amazing job if you did a freight pulling competition, Henry.
James: Oh please, Emily. Henry isn't even the strongest engine on Sodor.
Henry: I'll have you know James that I pull heavy goods to the Mainland all the time. Murdoch only provides goods work for the farmers and Sir Topham Hatt wouldn't want to take him away from that. They would need two engines to pull the trains I can all the way to the Mainland.
Percy: What about Hiro? Isn't he pretty strong?
Edward: Hiro would most likely represent Japan, Percy. He is a JNR Class D51 after all.
James: Yes, yes, we all know what his class is, Edward. Why would that matter? He doesn't live in Japan anymore so he should be able to compete for Sodor.
Emily: Victor's still a Cuban engine despite living on Sodor, James. Donald and Douglas are still Scottish despite living on Sodor. It's possible Sir Topham Hatt would let both of them compete where Hiro would represent Japan as his native land.
(Gordon backs into the sheds groaning.)
Gordon: Are you all still blathering about the Great Railway Show?
Thomas: It's not blathering, Gordon. We're all very excited to see engines from other countries compete against each other.
Gordon (scoffing): I think it's nothing but a waste of time. I wouldn't want to be racing against my brother like some show pony.
Percy: But you like showing off how fast you can go.
Gordon: You don't understand, little Percy. I have to boast about my speed because I'm the pride of Sir Topham Hatt's passenger fleet.
James: Gordon you don't have lovely red paint like me. If anyone's the pride of Sir Topham Hatt's fleet of engines it would be me.
(Gordon groans.)
Gordon: You are the same size as Edward, little James. You could never keep to my schedule. You simply aren't able to go nearly as fast as I can. There isn't a single engine on this island who could pull the express like me.
Edward: You do know Gordon that Connor and Caitlin were designed to go up to 123 mph.
(Gordon rolls his eyes.)
Gordon: Connor and Caitlin are STREAMLINED Edward. They only travel from Ulfstead Castle to the Mainland. They are not express engines like me.
Emily: Spencer's an A4 and can go up to 125 mph.
Gordon: Spencer wouldn't dare risk his position just for some frivolous race. And again Emily he's STREAMLINED. He serves the Duke and Duchess of Boxford which means his work load isn't nearly as large as mine.
Thomas: But why wouldn't you want to at least see your brother the Flying Scotsman again?
Gordon: That is not of your concern little Thomas.
(Gordon rolls backwards into his shed.)
Edward: Well everyone I suppose that's our cue to turn in for the night. Good night everyone.
(They all say good night except for Gordon.)
Narrator: One by one all the engines fall asleep. Although, Thomas could've sworn that he heard Gordon crying as he fell asleep.
(Thomas falls asleep as we fade to black.)

It had been a long and eventful day for the NWR since Wendell's return. The silly old engine had been busy reacquainting himself with the railway and meeting new friends. Sir Topham Hatt, Lady Hatt, and Dowager Hatt were shocked when Cleo arrived at their house ridding aboard Thomas with Wendell in tow.
For a while Sir Topham Hatt was speechless, but after a while he had managed to snap out of his trance and welcomed his great-great grandparents' engine and honorary Hatt back home. Wendell was thrilled and as such used his steam mustache to wrap around the Hatt family to hug them.
Sir Topham Hatt now just had to find a place for Wendell to work on the NWR. For the moment though, Sir Topham Hatt thought it best to hold off that decision until tomorrow, as it was getting late. He told Wendell that the silly old engine could rest at Tidmouth sheds with the others for the night.
The other engines were excited and wished to stay up late in order to hear more about Wendell, Dinah, and Ethan's adventures. Sir Topham Hatt though, denied this and told his engines that it was important for them to get their rest and that they could wait until tomorrow for Wendell's stories. That included Cleo too, who had spent the whole day chatting with the silly old engine.
Understanding, but disappointed, Cleo got up to head home with Sir Topham Hatt. Before they left, she promised to see Wendell tomorrow and that Cleo would take Wendell up to Ulfstead Castle to meet the Earl. Wendell loved that plan and asked Thomas if he was alright with Cleo traveling with him. Thomas was perfectly fine with this; he knew how much Cleo adored Dinah's discoveries and felt that it would be wrong to prevent Cleo from going on her own adventures and making her own discoveries. Wendell was grateful towards the tank engine and promised Cleo, he would see her after school.
With that Cleo and Sir Topham Hatt left, leaving the engines to rest quietly in their berths.
Later into the night the Jukebox Bands manager, J.J. Silvers had just got done counting the nickels the band earned that day. Being on Sodor had brought the band a lot of business due in part to the busy train stations. Thanks to Romeo and Patty, JJ and the band were able to set up shop at Patty's mother's cafe and provide entertainment for its customers and fellow passengers. It had brought in big business, which the band was grateful for. The cherry on top though, was that the band didn't have to hide themselves away, they could be out singing face to face with the public without people freaking out.
JJ by now had rounded up the nickels needed to pay his charges. He was planning on hitching a ride on Percy back home when the small green engine left for his mail deliveries. JJ still had a few hours before Percy's crew arrived, so he decided to look around the roundhouse, being careful so he wouldn't wake up the sleeping engines.
JJ was enjoying his quiet midnight stroll when he felt something suddenly grab him. The band manager let out a yelp of surprise as he was hauled up into the air and was left dangling upside down in front of the glowing yellow golden eyes of Wendell.
"Ssssh, you'll wake the others." Wendell warned.
"Well, why did you string me up like a trout then"?! JJ aggressively whispered.
Wendell quickly glanced around the room before addressing JJ.
"I was awoken by a presence, a familiar presence that I haven't felt for almost a hundred years. Though, there doesn't seem to be anyone out of place here, well except for you." Wendell said.
Wendell then paused, his eyes slowly focusing on JJ. JJ was suddenly turned right side up; JJ was glad he didn't have human insides as a puppet, otherwise he would've been sick. The band manager was now face to face with the old magic engine, who stared the puppet right in the eyes.
"Hmm, you look oddly familiar, have we met before old chap"? Wendell asked.
JJ felt like he would be sweating bullets if he still had the ability to do so.
"No, can't say I have ever met an engine like you before." JJ replied, trying to free himself.
"Are you sure? Because you sort of look like..." Wendell was suddenly interrupted.
"Oh, will you look at the time! I really must get going, don't want to miss my train home! Y'know important manager business stuff"! JJ stalled as he squirmed out of the grip of Wendell's steam mustache.
JJ ended up belly flopping onto the shed floor before quickly getting back up onto his feet and skittering away.
"Oh, okay. Have a good trip then." Wendell smiled.
JJ ran for cover underneath Gordon and hid there until he was sure the silly old engine wasn't chasing after him. JJ took the moment of piece to catch his breath, he could hear Gordon's thunderous snoring from above. Unable to hear himself think, JJ climbed up into Gordon's cab where the snoring was muffled.
The band manager checked his little pocket watch, he still had five minutes before Percy was due to leave. JJ leaned his back against the cool boiler, feeling tired and warn out. Right now, he just wanted to go home and rest, heck JJ played with the idea of sleeping in.
By now, the band manager was struggling to keep his eyes open, he was so tempted to just fall asleep and that heavenly singing coming from within Gordon's boiler wasn't helping.
JJ paused mid thought.
"Singing from Gordon's boiler? That can't be right, my exhaustion must be having me hear things." JJ thought.
Still, just to be sure, JJ pressed his ear up against the outer wall of Gordon's boiler and listened. To his shock and surprise, JJ did hear someone or something singing on the other side.
With his interest piqued, JJ reached for the door to Gordon's firebox. After much straining, JJ managed to open the door and peered inside.
The singing was faint, but it was a bit clearer to hear. There were no words, just a sweet hum forming a lullaby. With his interest piqued, JJ decided to take a closer look at this mysterious phenomenon.
Before JJ stepped entered Gordon's firebox, he removed his hat and jacket and hung them up on the open firebox door to alert Romeo and Gordon's crew that he was inside. With that done. JJ began his trek towards the mysterious hymn.
The inside of Gordon's firebox was dark, the only light source being what little moonlight was peering through the open firebox door. JJ carefully maneuvered forward, using the mysterious voice as guide. He passed through the ashes that had been produced from the previous day's work, accidentally kicking up clouds of it as he walked on.
The hymn became clearer and clearer as JJ drew close. He was beginning to make out the voice, as he did, something about it triggered memories in the old puppet. Flashes of a ship on the sea, a pile of vomit, a rush of ascending stairs, a restaurant, a heavenly sad voice, and a figure sitting in front of a piano. Something about those memories brought a tear to the band manager's eyes, so he quickly shook away the thought.
By now, JJ had begun to realize that he had been traveling through Gordon's firebox for a while now. At first, JJ thought he had somehow managed to find his way into Gordon's boiler as he heard a "splash" as a result of the band manager stepping into water, but after viewing what little he could see, JJ was sure this wasn't the case.
JJ was beginning to feel uneasy and thought for a moment about turning around and leaving. However, he spotted a light emitting from the direction he had been heading and his curiosity soon gotten the better of JJ who felt drawn to it.
As he neared the source, JJ's surroundings became clear. What JJ saw was mind boggling.
Above JJ was an endless clear blue sky. A few items floating around like a train of express coaches, the Queen's fire service medal, and various photos of engines and people such as Flying Scotsman and Sir Charles Topham Hatt. What caught JJ's full attention though was what laid front and center of this strange space.
There, resting between two chiseled stone pillars and atop a marble pillar was a bright star.
It was emitting the hymn that JJ had been hearing.
The band manager stood in front of the star in stunned silence for a long while. Then, he collapsed onto his knees in a crying fit.
As the sun rose, Romeo strolled towards Tidmouth sheds with a smile and a song. He had some chores to do before school, such as getting Gordon ready for the day, but the teen didn't mind it.
He flung open the doors to Gordon's berth, ready to wake up the big engine.
"Good morning"! Gordon greeted.
Romeo jumped back in surprise, he wasn't expecting to see his friend to be up and about.
"Gordon? What are you doing up this early? I haven't lit your fire yet"? Romeo asked confused.
"JJ Silvers stayed behind last night and offered to get me ready for the day." Gordon replied.
Romeo looked over his friend and was shocked. Gordon had been washed footplate to fender, any brass and exposed metal had been polished, Gordon's firebox had been completely cleaned and was now nicely lit. Next to Gordon laid a few cups, suggesting that JJ had used these to fill up Gordon's tender with water.
Taking a peek into Gordon's cab, Romeo found JJ asleep on the floor, covered in dirt and coal dust.
"Well, that was nice of him. Guess we can return the favor by dropping JJ off at the cafe." Romeo suggested, still surprised by the gesture.
Romeo hopped in his friend's cab and with the crew they headed out for the day with a sleeping JJ in tow.

The Ulfstead Trials
Hello everyone. I've got another story here. This time it's about the Ulfstead gang.
An old rival brings Stephen back to his days as a competitor at the Rainhill Trials. Shenanigans ensue!
The Ulfstead Trials
Tumblr media
One day, Thomas was sent to Brendam Docks to collect a special for Ulfstead Castle. He was very excited. The Earl was always having new ideas and holding grand events up at the castle, and any special going there was always an exciting surprise.
As Thomas pulled into the docks, Salty was shunting some trucks nearby.
“Good morning Salty” said Thomas, “Do you know where my special is?”
“Ahoy there matey!” greeted Salty, “Cranky’s just unloading him now”.
Thomas was puzzled. “Him?”
At that moment, They heard a voice coming from inside the ship, and then Cranky lifted out a very old and very strange looking engine.
His tall funnel was back to front, and his pistons were pointed up into the air.
“Hey! Easy there Clumsy Hook!” the engine shouted, “I’m a historic machine you’re lifting, not some ordinary crates!”
“Yeah yeah, whatever you say old timer” groaned Cranky,  “I’ve got more work to do besides unloading you. The least you can do is quit complaining”.
With the engine still grumbling, Cranky lowered him onto a flatbed.
“Ah, Finally! Us engines aren’t meant to hang in the air like that”.
Cranky wasn’t listening.
The old engine harrumphed, then looked to see Thomas and Salty staring at him.
“Ah good, some fellow engines at last” he said, “Well now, I suppose we should get introductions out of the way…”
There was an awkward pause before Salty spoke up.
“Er, well, I’m Salty”
“And I’m Thomas… And uh… you are?”
The engine stared at him with disbelief.
“Surely, you know who I am”.
“I’m afraid we don’t matey” said Salty.
“Wha… Do engines today know nothing of history?” the old engine spluttered. “Well, I suppose it has been a long time since I’ve been out of the museum”.
Alright then!” he continued, “Maybe you don’t recognize me, but surely my name will sound familiar. You can call me Hackworth, although perhaps I’m better known as Sans Pareil!”
He smiled grandly atop his flatbed, but Thomas and Salty just stared blankly at him.
Hackworth scowled.
“Oh come on, nothing, really? Sans Pareil?… French for Without Equal?… One of the top competitors at the Rainhill Trials?”
Thomas and Salty still said nothing.
“Hmph… Forget it” said Hackworth, trying to compose himself, “I suppose one of you is taking me to Ulfstead Castle?”
“Er, uh… y-yes, that would be me” stuttered Thomas, “uh, sorry”.
Soon, Thomas was coupled to the flatbed, and he steamed away out of the docks.
The journey to Ulfstead Castle was very awkward. Neither engine said a word for a long time.
Thomas broke the silence.
“Umm… Now that I think about it… You mentioned the Rainhill Trials. That does sound familiar. Can you tell me what they were?”
Hackworth smiled at that.
“Certainly” he said, “It was back when us steam engines were the latest thing. Brand new, and experimental technology we were. The Rainhill Trials were a competition to see which of us was the best, and I was one of the top contenders there!”
“Oh!” interrupted Thomas, “Now I remember where I heard of it. Stephen told me about the Rainhill Trials!”
“Stephen?” Asked Hackworth, surprised, “As in The Rocket?”
“Yes” replied Thomas, “He was at the Rainhill Trials too. I think he actually won them! He works for the Earl up at the castle now. Do you know him?”
Hackwork scowled.
“Unfortunately I do,” he muttered darkly.
“Huh?” Thomas was taken aback.
“I’ll say no more on the subject” continued Hackworth, “Except that there is a lot you do not know about history”.
Thomas wanted to ask more, but Hackworth’s glare made him decide it was probably best to keep quiet.
Hackworth’s mood did improve however, once they arrived at the Castle and he was unloaded from the flatbed.
He was soon in steam, and sizzling contentedly, when he was interrupted by another engines’ whistle, and a small blue narrow gauge engine drew up alongside.
“Hello” she whistled, “I’m Millie, and you must be Hackworth”.
“Indeed I am” replied Hackworth, “Pleasure to meet you. Finally someone on this island who knows my name”.
At that moment, a distinguished looking man stepped out from Millie’s cab.
“Well it certainly wouldn't be right to not know the name of an engine who I invited to visit”, said the man as he stepped forward.
“Allow me to introduce myself. I am Sir Robert Norramby, Earl of Sodor”.
“Oh! Well it’s an honor to meet you, your grace” said Hackworth.
“The honor is all mine” said the Earl, “Welcome to Ulfstead Castle! We’re glad to have you here as our special guest for the summer”.
Hackworth beamed. He was, by now, feeling much better.
The Earl continued, “Yes indeed. You and Stephen will be a fine site running around the estate together”.
If the Earl saw Hackworth’s grimace, he didn’t say anything.
“I’m afraid I’ve got to go and make an important phone call” he continued, “But Millie here will be more than happy to show you around the estate herself”.
And with that, the Earl walked off.
“Come along then Hackworth!” called Mille, “Have you ever seen a dinosaur before”.
“A dinosaur?” asked Hackworth, “Well I may be old, but can’t say I’ve ever seen a dinosaur before”.
Millie just chuckled, as she led Hackworth towards the dino park.
It was evening by the time they finished touring the estate. As Millie led Hackworth into the main engine hall, they were met by Glynn the Coffee Pot Engine.
“Hello Mille” he whistled, “Oh, and you must be Hackworth. It’s nice to meet you”.
“Likewise” replied Hackworth. “This is a lovely estate”.
“I’m glad you like it” replied Glynn, “I hear you and Stephen will be working together showing visitors around throughout the summer”.
This time, no one missed Hackworth’s disgruntled frown.
“Alright” he sighed, “Everyone keeps mentioning Stephen. Where is he?”
“Right here!” came a voice.
Wheeshing grandly, Stephen rolled forward out from a cloud of steam, and smiled at the visitor.
Hackworth just grunted. “So… The so-called Rocket now fancies himself King of a castle too”.
“Well, I don’t know if I’d go that far” laughed Stephen, “But I suppose some might say I am the star attraction here”.
Millie and Glynn just rolled their eyes.
Hackworth grew even more stern.
“Typical” he huffed, “All that fame and attention going to your smokebox… And you didn’t earn any of it”.
Stephen frowned.
“Oh, are you still going on about that Hackworth?” He wheeshed, “Come on… We both know I won fair-and-square”.
“You most certainly did not!” replied Hackworth.
“Yes I did!” Shouted Stephen, “And anyways, that was years ago! Why won’t you just let it go already?”
“Why should I let go of you ruining my one big chance to prove myself?! Especially when I know you cheated!”
“I did not!”
“Did too!”
“Did not!”
“Did too!”
“Uhm, hold on” cut in Glynn, “But what are you both talking about?”
Hackworth grunted. “You didn’t tell them? Why am I not surprised?”
“There’s nothing to tell,” protested Stephen, “but I can see you’re going to do so anyway”.
“Right you are” began Hackworth.
“1829, The Rainhill Trials. Five of the finest engines in the world at the time, all gathered together in one place”.
“Well… Four engines, and a horse on a treadmill”.
“We were all there for one reason… A test of style, efficiency, speed and power”.
“And I was one of the best! Sans Pareil! Without Equal!”
“I wowed the judges and the audience, and I could have won it all”.
“But then… BANG!”
“My cylinder cracked, and despite being so close to winning… I was out”.
“The others all failed too, leaving The Rocket as the so-called Champion”.
“It was Sabotage! I know it!”
“My crew checked over everything before we began. There was nothing wrong!”
“You did something!” finished Hackworth, enraged.
“I did nothing!” protested Stephen, “What could I have done anyway?!”
“Why don’t you confess and then you can tell us yourself!”
“I have nothing to confess to! You broke down because of bad luck. That or you were just careless!”
“CARELESS?!” Bellowed Hackwork, “Why you… I was the best engine in the world! I’m anything but careless!”
“Yeah right!” Interrupted Stephen, “I beat you then, and I can still beat you today!”
A tense silence fell between the engines.
“Alright then…” smirked Hackworth, “A rematch then… And this time I’ll prove I’m the better engine”.
“You're on!” declared Stephen, “We can have our own Rainhill Trials, right here at the castle!”
“Did someone say Trials?!” Said a voice.
The engines all looked to see the Earl as he practically leapt out the door, and ran excitedly towards them.
“Am I correct in hearing that a challenge has been put forth?” he said.
“Yes indeed sir,” replied Hackworth, “A competition between me and Stephen. Two Rainhill veterans together for a rematch!”
“Uh, Sir…” interrupted Millie, “I don’t think this is such a-”
“Oh, how wonderful!”, declared the Earl.
“Excuse me,” said Glynn, “But, could I join in too?”
“Glynn!” wheeshed Millie.
“What? It sounds like it could be fun”.
“Of course you can join Glynn,” replied the Earl, “Oh, this is so exciting! I’ll go and make the arrangements!”
“Um, Sir… Sir!...” called Millie, “I really think you should reconsi-”
But the Earl had already gone back inside.
Word soon spread of the competition, and people from all over the island came to the castle to see it.
Thomas, Annie and Clarabel, were taking visitors to the castle.
“What on earth is the Earl doing now for so many people to be going to the castle?” asked Annie.
“I feel so full, I feel so full!” complained Clarabel.
“I don’t know what’s going on” said Thomas, “but I guess we’ll soon find out”.
They arrived at the castle to find Stephen, Hackworth and Glynn, all parading around the estate, with crowds of people cheering them on.
“Yes, your eyes do not deceive you!” called Hackworth, “Sans Pareil makes his triumphant return to the rails. Make way for the finest of early railway engineering!”
“Agreed” replied Stephen, “So why don’t you move aside Hackworth, and make way for The Rocket!”
“Oh, Hello everyone” chuckled Glynn, “Thank you all for visiting!”
Millie just sat in a siding out of the way, and groaned in frustration.
“What’s happening here?” asked Thomas.
“Hackworth and Stephen have re-started some silly old rivalry and have dragged the whole castle into it” replied Millie.
“Oh” said Thomas, “Well… at least it looks like everyone else is having fun”.
“Hah!” laughed Millie, “Just you wait. This is not going to end well”.
By now, the three old engines had all lined up. The Earl stepped forward.
“And now for the big event!” He called, “Stephen, Hackworth and Glynn, will all race around the estate! The first one back here is the winner!”
“On your mark!”
“Get set!”
“GO!”
And the three old engines set off as fast as they could…
… Which wasn’t very fast.
In any case, Stephen and Hackworth took the lead, leaving Glynn behind.
But when they reached a set of points, Stephen went one way… and Hackworth went another!
“Hey!” called Stephen, “Where are you going?!”
“Where are you going?” replied Hackworth, “I’m going to win!”
“Oh no you won’t!”
So when Stephen reached another set of points, he went a different way as well.
This continued for the rest of the race. When Stephen went one way, Hackworth went another…
…And when Hackworth took one line, Stephen wouldn’t follow.
They got so off course that by the time they both reached the finish line, Glynn was there too, and they all crossed the line at the same time.
“Yes! I WON!” called Hackworth.
“No, I won!” protested Stephen.
“Only because you took a shortcut!”
“I only did that because you took a shortcut!”
“Liar!”
“Cheat!”
“OH, MON DIEU!” cried Millie, “Are you two done yet?!”
“No!” insisted Hackworth, “Since we can’t decide who won the race, we need one more challenge to prove who’s the best”.
“I’m game,” said Stephen.
“Oh,” said Glynn, “Well… I suppose one more challenge couldn’t hurt. What do you suggest?”
“A test of strength!” puffed Hackworth, “Whoever can pull the heaviest load, will be the winner!”
“Hah” laughed Stephen, “Easy!”
“Ugh” groaned Millie.
“Well, at least there isn’t anything too heavy here for them to pull” muttered Thomas.
At that moment, Percy pulled in, and whistled for the Earl’s attention.
“Hello Sir!” He called, “Here’s that delivery of stone you asked for”.
“I don’t know what you need all of these heavy stone trucks for,” he commented, “But, you ordered them, and I delivered them!”
Stephen and Hackworth looked at Percy’s stone trucks, and smirked.
Thomas and Millie just glared.
“What?” squeaked Percy.
Soon, Hackworth, Stephen and Glynn, were all lined up for another run around the estate. Each was coupled to an impressive weight of…
… one stone truck each.
The Earl got ready to wave them off.
“Er… Are you sure about this?” he asked.
“Certainly!” insisted Hackworth.
“As sure as I’ve ever been!” puffed Stephen.
“Uh… I’m also here!” said Glynn.
“Well… Alright then”.
“On your mark!”
“Get set!”
“GO!”
And once again, with much puffing of smoke and steam, the three engines started off. Each straining against the weight of their one truck.
Then, just as Hackworth reached the first set of points, there was a jolt and He began heading towards the exit of the estate.
“Hey!” called Stephen, “What are you doing now!”
“Haha! This estate isn’t big enough for our rivalry Stephen!” Laughed Hackworth, “Let’s take this to the Main Line!”
“Get back here!” whistled Stephen, and he chased after Hackworth!
Both engines reached the hill, and quickly began gaining speed.
Stephen rocked and swayed as he chased down the hill after Hackworth.
“This is getting a bit dangerous” he thought, “I’d better slow down a bit”.
Stephen applied his brakes, but the heavy truck pushed him onwards.
“Oh no. HACKWORTH!” he called, “I can’t stop!”
“Aha! So you finally admit I’m the better engine!” replied Hackworth, “Don’t worry Stephen! I’ve got enough brakes for us both!”
So Hackworth applied his brakes… But they didn’t help.
“oh… o-oh NO! HELP! HELP!”
Stephen caught up with Hackworth, and ran into his truck with a bump!
Both engines were now going at a tremendous speed, for real this time!
“WAAAAAAGH!” cried Stephen, as he leaned dangerously to one side.
Hackworth, too, was in danger of coming off the rails.
Both engines reached the bottom of the hill safely, but they were still going much too fast.
The main line junction was just up ahead. Stephen knew it would be busy at this time. If they didn’t stop in time, there could be a terrible crash.
Thinking quickly, Stephen got as close to Hackworth’s truck as he could.
Then, with a well timed bump, his coupling chain swung forward and hooked onto the truck.
“Aha! Got it!”
“Hackworth!” he called, “We need to work together if we’re going to stop in time!”
“What?!” cried Hackworth.
“Just Listen to me! On the count of three, apply your brakes as hard as you can!”
“One!”
“Two!”
“THREE!”
Together, both engines clamped their brakes hard on.
Sparks flew, as their wheels skidded along the line.
The junction was getting closer, and Stephen could see Gordon thundering towards them with the express.
With one final effort Stephen and Hackworth came to a stop.
They were just in time, as Gordon rushed past mere inches in front of Hackworth’s bufferbeam.
“Keep out of my way, Old Timers!” Shouted Gordon, “Express Coming Through!” and he continued off into the distance.
Both Stephen and Hackworth were out of breath.
They were still breathing heavily when they heard a familiar whistle, and Thomas puffed up behind them, carrying the Earl.
“Stephen! Hackworth!” called the Earl, “Are you two alright?”
“Yes sir,” panted Stephen, “we’re fine”.
Hackworth was at a loss for words.
The Earl walked up to him. “What were you thinking Hackworth? Running off down the hill with a heavy load, and having Stephen chase after you?!”
“I… I don’t know Sir. I’m sorry” said Hackworth.
“I should hope so too” said the Earl, “In any case, Thomas here will help you both back up to the castle”.
“Er… Yes Sir!” said Thomas.
So the Earl climbed back aboard, Thomas was coupled up to Stephen and Hackworth, and the cavalcade set off back up the hill.
They reached the castle to find Millie waiting for them.
“Ahem…” she wheeshed, “Well…”
“I know, I know” said Stephen, “We’re sorry Millie”.
“I suppose we took our competition too far” added Hackworth, “We should have listened to you”.
“Yes” said Millie, smugly, “You should have”.
“I guess, no one won the competition,” mused Stephen.
But at that moment, Glynn puffed into view, having almost completed his run around the castle.
“Nearly there” he puffed to himself, “I’ll do it… I’ll do it… I’ll… I’ve done it!... I’ve done it everyone!”
“Well well well” laughed Thomas, “Looks like Glynn won the competition!”
“I suppose he did,” chuckled Hackworth.
“Well done Glynn!” cheered Stephen.
“Yes, well done indeed!” added Hackworth.
Glynn just smiled. Truthfully, he was rather out of puff.
That evening, Millie, Glynn, Stephen and Hackworth, all rolled into the sheds at the castle.
Hackworth spoke up.
“I’m sorry Stephen” he said, “I took things too far. I was wrong, you’re not a liar or a cheater”.
“It’s alright” answered Stephen, “Truthfully, I think I let my own competitiveness get the better of me today. You are a good engine Hackworth, I’m sorry you didn’t get the fame you wanted all those years ago”.
There was a long silence.
Then…
“Still” chuckled Glynn, “It was a fun competition”.
“Oh, yes indeed” grinned Hackworth, “It really brought me back to the Rainhill Trials”.
“If I’m honest, Rainhill was also a bit of a mess” laughed Stephen, “Do you remember the Horse?”
“Hah! How could I forget” replied Hackworth, “I can’t be certain, but I think I remember seeing him leave some dropping in the judges stand”.
“Ha ha ha!” laughed Stephen, “Well, that’s probably what got him disqualified then!”
Glynn couldn’t help but laugh too.
Millie rolled her eyes.
But even she smiled, as the old engines, now old friends, talked long into the night.
The End

Here is a small headcannon
When the skr decided to connect to the old msr slate quarry, Duke, Handel, and Sam were ecstatic. Once the line had opened, the slate quarry became the most profitable slate quarry on the island. On the other buffer, the small raggedy blue mountain quarry was running on dimes money wise, and the mine engine and a faceless garatt engine wise. In all honesty, the bmq could make loads with their iconic namesake, "The Blue Mountains", due to te loads of slate in the hills of those peaks, but they were never in range because of their being only one engine who was able to either pull trains to lay rail or/and deliver the heavy slate to the harbours (where they have a contract for slate to
Scotland) so the trains would have to be juggled on a tightrope over lava type schedule. After a year and a half. The bmq had run down to their last $10, and the owner Jefferson Rheneas, was about to close up shop, when the manager of the Skarlowey said that they had a contract for the bmq, due to a spectral incident at the old quarry. The contract, you may ask, is to bring slate from the quarry to a construction site at Crovan's Gate to build a works for reparing, making and upgrading/updating any and all types of steam (fireless included), in return, the Skarlowey would by an engine for the bmq along with their purchase for a narrow guadge works shunter from Cuba. During the constructed of the newly nicknamed "Steamworks", the skr sent daily trains to work on building the quarry up, and during the calmest of days when trains were minimal, the skr would sometimes do construction trains to help build the quarry faster. A week before the new arrivals, "The Blue Mountain Quarry" finally finished the extention construction, and the morning of the arrivals the soon to be officially named "Stamworks" was finished. Unfortunately, during unloading of the new engines an incident occurred where the Cuban engine was accidentally knocked in to a shallow patch of water by the new Irish engine who would go to work at the quarry. Drowning in guilt that he had just killed an engine, the new quarry engine left for work as soon as he was steamed by his crew, who had been allowed to come with their engine. Luckily the yellow Cuban engine was fished out before any majior damage was done, and he got to atend the name christening and become the works very first repair and paint job. Que events of Blue mountain mystery. To this day still, the Steamworks get regular visits and the BMQ is the most profitable quarry on the Skarlowey Railway taking regular slate trains to Ulfstead castle making a tidy profit and getting regular trains of brakeroom snacks in return.

i love your au (and it’s art!) so much!
any fun details you can think of to share about the story?
Its not just my au. My good friend @sekiumiarashi and I work on this together. She comes up with most of the worldbuilding and a lot of the scenarios as well.
But to answer your question. Some tidbits include
Donald and Douglas got lost on the Magic railway for years. Since time works differently there they thought they were gone for 2 years but actually were gone for 20. This explains the absence between the model and cgi series. Also their crews now have slight magic powers due to the side effects of the magic railroad, no biggie.
A lot of the engines have things painted on their liveries as a sort of customization. For example Edward has the Earl's Coat of Arms on his cab because he stopped two thieves from stealing King Godred's Crown
Umi and I are on a quest to give every engine a big family hug story. So far the ones who have hug stories are James, Edward, Gordon, Spencer and Duck.
James has a small villain arc (not super fleshed out but it's there)
Duck and Diesel get lost in IKEA because they kept arguing over how to pronounce IKEA and didn't look where they were going. And also Donald and Douglas get stuck in a revolving door (In their human avatar forms)
There is a story where everyone thinks Gordon turned evil and brainwashed Edward to join his side but actually it was all horrible timing and a misunderstanding.
Same story as the one above. Edward gets held hostage but since he's really sleepy he doesn't take it seriously and just ends up confusing the hell out of his captor.
We made an entire fictional railway/country that is somewhat intertwined with Sodor. It's based in North America between Canada and the USA. It's larger than Sodor but it's still really small compared to everything else. It's called Aldove and the railway is called the United Northern Railway or UNR for short.
There's a secret hidden junction in Henry’s Forest where the three railway dads go to just relax and chill and hang out. It's a special place to them since it's where they hung out before everyone else came to the island. No one else but them knows about it and their crews have sworn to secrecy.
There are other train gods besides Lady.
Smudger is alive and well just physically disabled. He can't physically turn his wheels but his brakes work just fine. He and Duke live up at Ulfstead Castle now.
We made Geoffrey (from the episode Who's Geoffrey) real. We made him real and he's Italian.

Can I have Smudger for the ask game?
Tumblr media
Ha! Get generator'd, dork!
1.Smudger was one of many number two's on the MSR, and when his working life ended up being as short as the others, a rumor started that the number was cursed.
2. He lives! When Duke was dug up from his shed, Smudger ended up being found, too! Nowadays he lives up at Ulfstead Castle in Sir Robert's railway museum.
3. Millie is the only other narrow gauge engine he'll talk to. He wants to forget about his MSR life and avoids its other former engines as a result, and he's sure the SR engines have heard nothing good about him.
4. He always sleeps as close to the shed doors as he can. Whenever he ends up at the back, he starts thinking about his time as a generator.
5. Unlike one of the other number two's, who often came off the rails due to not being regauged properly, Smudger was just needlessly careless. But after being given a new lease on life, he hasn't had a single accident.
+1. Smudger's visits to the Skarloey Railway, infrequent they may be, are always tense. Smudger isn't about to talk to Duke, Duke isn't sure how to approach Smudger, and the other engines aren't getting in the middle of that.

STH: Well, if Thomas and Wilbert aren’t here, then the party is off
All of the engines: What?! No!

Percy: It’s Thomas and Wilbert, they haven’t showed up to Ulfstead Castle, so they might be lost!
Harold: I’ll take to the sky! *he rotates his blades and flies up into the sky*
Scene transitions back to Thomas and Wilbert, in which they are getting covered in snow
Wilbert: *shivering* T-Thomas.. I feel cold
Thomas: Keep being strong Wilbert, we’ll make it
Wilbert: *sees Harold in the sky* Thomas look, there’s Harold!
Thomas: Harold? Harold?! *he blew his whistle*
Harold: *hears Thomas’s whistle* That sounds like- Thomas! *he turns and spots Thomas and Wilbert* I have located Thomas and Wilbert!
Hiro: *sees Thomas and Wilbert* Are you ok Thomas and Wilbert?
Thomas: Yes, we’re fine Hiro, we just need to be out of the snow

Axel: Oh! That’ll not do at all!
Wilbert: Now we’ll never make it to the party
Thomas: Don’t worry Wilbert, we’ll find a way out of the snow
Rebecca: *blew her whistle* Fear not, help has arrived!
Thomas: Rebecca?
James, Percy, Emily, Molly, Rosie, Merlin, and Ashima all arrive
Thomas: James, Percy, Emily, Molly, Rosie, Merlin, Ashima! You came!
Merlin: Why yes we did Thomas! We heard your predicament, so we brought help
Wilbert: Where at- *sees Jack and the Pack*
Jack/Alfie/Max/Monty/Byron/Oliver/Ned/Buster/Kelly/Isobella: The Pack to The Rescue!
Thomas: Jack, guys! You came!
Jack: We heard your predicament Thomas, and thanks to Rosie, we are here to help you!
Thomas: Thank you Rosie!
Rosie: Your welcome Thomas!
Soon, Jack and the Pack began to clear away the snow bank, and Axel was able to try again to pull Thomas and Wilbert out of the snow, this time, successfully
Thomas: Thank you Axel!
Wilbert: Thank you!
Axel: Your welcome my friends of De Isoland of Sodor!
Wilbert: Don’t you mean Island of Sodor?
Axel: Of course, but it’s done in Belgian French
Wilbert: I see
Thomas: Thank you Jack, thank you Pack Team!
Jack and The Pack: Your welcome Thomas!
Ashima: Well, shall we head to Ulfstead Castle?
Thomas: I got a better idea, all of us, together
The engines all agreed, so they lined up next to each other, Thomas next to Wilbert, James next to Percy, Emily next to Rosie, Molly next to Rebecca, Merlin next to Hiro, and Ashima next to Axel
Jack: We’ll see you at the castle Thomas!
Thomas: See you soon too Jack! Come one everyone! *he blew his whistle*
Soon the engines puff to Ulfstead Castle together, as We Make a Team Together played, as the sky was night time, the rest of the engines heard 12 Whistles and they were happy to see Thomas and the others arriving in time
Thomas: Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas everyone!
Skiff evenly showed up at the party, evenly all the Road Vehicles of Sodor, such as Bertie, Terence, Trevor, Elizabeth, Madge, Butch, Caroline, Kevin, Thumper, Bulgy, George, The Horrid Lorries (since they are fully repaired), Jack, Alfie, Oliver, Ned, Kelly, Byron, Isobella, Max, Monty, and Buster were all present
STH: Well done Thomas, now we shall set the tree up
Soon, the Christmas Tree was set up in no time, thus the 3 Railway Controllers (Sir Topham Hatt, Mr. Percival, and Fergus Duncan), along with Sir Robert Norramby, Lady Hatt, Dowager Hatt, Stephen and Bridget Hatt, The Duke and Duchess of Boxford, the Mayor of Sodor, and Lord Callan all took the stage, with STH giving a speech
STH: Ladies and Gentlemen, and all engines alike, we like to thank Thomas and all his friends for making this Christmas Party possible
The engines all cheer, until suddenly, Harold landed softly
Harold: Wait sir! I have brought an important guest!
Santa: *exits from Harold* Ho Ho Ho!
Narrator: Soon, everyone was greeted with the very special guest of all, Santa Claus!
Thomas: It’s him, the jolly man himself
Jeremy: *flies by Ulfstead Castle* Merry Christmas everyone!
Thomas: You too Jeremy!
Soon, a mistletoe dangled in front of Thomas and Rosie, the one dangled the mistletoe was Kelly
Kelly: It’s fun, I mean it’s Christmas
Thomas: Really funny Kelly
STH: Without further ado, I’d like to say one thing with everyone
All: Merry Christmas!
Kyo Yamashiro draws all of the engines and road vehicles, evenly Harold and Jeremy, Humanized in Manga Style
Kyo: My Christmas Art of this year
Scene now cuts to a montage of all the engines doing various jobs in a montage with the Thomas Anthem by Headmaster Hastings, evenly going back to the first 99 Stories and the 2 Short Stories as the song plays
Thomas: This is the best Christmas I ever get to experience
Rosie: Me too Thomas
Wilbert: I agree
Fireworks were now being displayed in the sky
Wilbert: Oooooh, now that’s what I call a Christmas Party
Camera Pans up to the Sky as the Fireworks are going on and the Party going
Title Closure: Merry Christmas
Scene fades to Black, Ending the Story
What a way to end 2023 on a wild rollercoaster of a note, by doing 2 Specials in One, both a 100th Story and a Christmas Special
Until then, Story 101 will be kicking off 2024, until next time on Thomas and Friends: Tales from Sodor, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Hey, Hey, Hey! - On Music in CGI TtTE Movies
Part 1: The Anecdote (Intro)
If there’s one thing that watching Thomas the Tank Engine has taught me, it’s that the most important thing is being friends, especially when you’ve committed to watching a bunch of children’s movies of questionable quality. For this @greatwesternway must again be commended not only for getting her hands on all the films, but watching them multiple times (once by herself and then again with me, several times over by this point). That’s friendship!
The first movie I watched (alone) was Blue Mountain Mystery which, If you’ve never seen any of the CGI movies, is a nice one to start with. The pacing is decent, the characterization of the narrow gauge engines is good, and the inclusion of Victor’s backstory is great, bordering on brilliant writing. Really, I only had one complaint… The music.
youtube
My god, even now listening to it again as I write this. It’s like at every juncture the people responsible for this song were determined to make the worst possible decisions available to them at the time. The blaring horn in the intro, the cacophonous production, the lyrics that would earn a C+ at best in a 4th grade poetry unit, the children’s choir in the background, this truly has it all. Two minutes of baffling mediocrity in an otherwise pretty decent movie. The other numbers weren’t any better, but Working Together was particularly noteworthy.
The film ended and I told DJ that I’d enjoyed most of it, but that the music was very, very bad, as bad as I’d ever heard in a children’s animated feature (and I’ve watched some garbage animated features).
“The songs in the film were different songs, but they sounded almost identical,” I observed. DJ laughed and agreed, and for the next few weeks we watched better movies with better music in them. Then we got to King Of The Railway.
Tumblr media
“This next one has Stephen in it,” DJ promised me.
“Love that guy!” I replied cheerfully. We’d watched his episodes of the show, but I had not yet seen the movie.
“It also has your favorite song in it.”
I laughed. I thought she was joking. After all, I had said that all the bad songs sounded basically the same. And as someone who has been diagnosed with incurable Commitment To The Bit Syndrome, I proceeded to ‘yes-and’ her.
“Oh, great! Can’t wait to start rockin’ and rollin’ and liftin’ and loadin’!”
DJ did not laugh or continue the joke. I was confused, but it happens! I’m not always as funny as I think I am. At least I would get to watch the movie that introduced my favorite Ulfstead Castle engine! And then, sixteen minutes into the film…
youtube
“No fucking way,” I said, at first in disbelief and then again in glorious, shrieking delight. “No fucking way!”
“I’m afraid so,” DJ said gravely. At least, I think that’s what she said, because at this point I was inconsolable. I had become unglued. I don’t remember exactly what came out of my mouth, but I know it was unkind. And loud.
“You can’t just– You can’t reuse a song you already used!” I declared, once I’d pulled myself together enough to start forming full sentences again. “You can’t hand in the same homework assignment twice!”
“Sure they can. They have the rights,” said DJ matter-of-factly.
“Well yeah,” I conceded. “But it’s just not The Done Thing. It’s not wrong, but we just don’t do it!”
Since then, the quality of the music in the CGI films has been the subject of much ridicule between the two of us, but to me especially. Sometimes I will narrate what I’m doing to the tune of Working Together. Any five syllable phrase will work, and it doesn’t even need to rhyme!
Open the ipad Lookin’ at files Drinkin’ my coffee!
So why bring this up? Well, a few weeks ago, I and several others in the ttte blogosphere received the entirety of the lyrics to Misty Island Rescue’s theme as an anonymous message. It reminded me that there’s actually a lot to say about the music, how it evolved over the years, and what makes the bad stuff bad and the good stuff good. And, yes, there is good stuff in some of these films.
So let’s make a series of essays about it! Next week, I’d like to take a look at the worst of what these movies have to offer, and break down why they don’t work and what might be done to fix them. After that, we’ll look at the good stuff and talk about how they improved on the formula, and I’ll reveal which song I think is the best out of the 13 CGI films.
‘Til then!

TrainTober2022 #04: Spirit
Story Blurb & Credits Below Cut
   I remember where I was when I last saw Glilah. Topham was having a word with me at Toryreck about how I needed to make a better example of myself to the younger Coffee Pots. And the minute he finishes his sentence, in xe comes, whistling for dear life for someone, anyone to help stop them before they crash before they were out of sight and into the horizon. I could have done something. I could have done anything and it might have saved them.
   Few minutes passed and we heard this horrible, blood-curdling shriek followed by what sounded like an avalanche. A couple of men ran up to us and said something had happened down at Knapford. At the time, I was practically biting at the nail to go and help, but looking back, it was all a blur. All I can think about that day is the look on Topham's face as his youngest engine went screaming into oblivion, and when he was forced to accept that xe couldn't be saved. We were built on the cheap side, you see? Put together on a hope and prayer. A.W.Dry didn't know jack about building engines. They just wanted something that would run. If any of us were to get wrecked, well... let's not talk about that, can we?
   They had to break Glilah up on site. Topham oversaw the operation. I have no idea how some engines can work in scrapyards, because just the sight of xyr remains made me sick to my boiler. I think a part of him died that day, amidst all the ice and snow as they cut xem up. Shortly after came the Great War, and then just crisis after crisis mounted on him. He was a kinder man back in the day - enough to call him a gentleman on his good days, at least - but Glilah's death was just the first in a series of crisis after crisis that tested him over the years. I rarely saw him in the last few years of his life, but I think he tried to get back in touch with his former self. At least, I hope so. I could never stand seeing him so sad.
       - Ex-TK&ELR No.1 'Glynn', "Memoirs of the Coffee Pot Railway"
Glynn has been a member of the Norramby Estate at Ulfstead Castle since the 1990s, and can regularly be found working demonstration lines at the Estate or along the Ffarquhar Branch Line.
Local legend around Dryaw says that on some nights in January, when the Moon is full, you can see Glilah's train race through the station again, on the way to xyr final resting place just outside Knapford Harbor. Most believe this to be nothing but local superstition, but some who claim to have encountered the spirit believe much, much different.

Traintober | Day 2 - Bridge
Green Arrow finds out that Edward has a fear of heights after a new bridge is installed.
Traintober Prompt List
Tumblr media
~~~
"You again?" Green Arrow raised an eyebrow as Boco came in with clay trucks from the Clay Pits. “What’s wrong with Edward, why are you pulling his trains?”
The BR Class 28 gave a tired sigh before he looked away.
“He won’t go over the new bridge,” Boco explained and Green Arrow frowned, confused.
“Bridge?”
“The new one between Maron and Suddery, the one they raised so that taller boats could go up the Maura,” Boco tutted. “He won’t go over it now.”
“Won’t he now?”
Green Arrow gave a thoughtful hum as Boco gave a honk and departed to leave his train with the twins. Arrow decided that he would have a talk with the blue engine.
~~~
After many hours of searching, Arrow found the elder blue Furness up at Ulfstead Castle later that evening. He’d been hiding and spending less time around Brendam sheds and Green Arrow knew it wasn’t just a coincidence.
A new, significantly higher bridge had been installed, Edward suddenly avoiding work and now he was avoiding the rest of the Brendam crew. There had to be something else going on.
“So this is where you’ve been hiding,” Arrow greeted the blue engine but recoiled as he saw that Edward wasn’t alone. “Oh, hello James.”
“What are you doing here? Get lost!” James sneered at Arrow whom just stared back at him unbothered by James' hostility.
“Now I know the both of you are a pair of lovebirds, but you can’t keep hogging Edward all to yourself when Boco, Murdoch and I have to pick up the slack,” Green Arrow appealed and Edward sighed and looked away from him.
“I suppose it was rather selfish of me to dump all of my duties on the rest of you,” he admitted. “You came all this way to confront me?”
“Well, actually I was going to ask if you were afraid of heights,” Arrow queried bluntly and Edward paled in response as James immediately went to defend the blue engine.
“Don’t you go throwing around gossip like that!” James shouted at him. “Just typical of you to go throwing around rumours about people!”
“I did not throw rumours around I just asked if Edward was afraid of heights you garish red monstrosity!” Arrow retortedback at James.
“Please, please!” Edward protested trying to defuse the situation. “This fighting isn’t going to get us anywhere!”
“But he thinks you’re afraid of heights!” James argued and Edward gave a defeated sigh in response.
“It’s because I am,” the blue engine admitted. He looked back at Arrow who looked particularly proud of himself. “How did you work it out?”
“The new bridge over the Maura being raised up and now you’re suddenly avoiding it and the fact you won’t travel on the viaduct unless absolutely necessary pretty much gave it away,” Arrow claimed and Edward blushed slightly.
“I suppose it is a tad obvious now that you put it that way,” Edward conceded. “I’m sorry for putting my work on the rest of you.”
“I mean, it’s not exactly fair on us but if you’re afraid of something then I think most of us understand,” Arrow maintained to Edward.
“Stop blaming Edward, he can’t help it!” James yelled at Arrow and Arrow inwardly sighed.
He and James had never gotten along, never had and probably never would. It was fine, Arrow didn’t care all that much, he was used to people holding grudges or disliking him intently.
“Arrow, can I ask you to keep my fear of heights a secret? The Fat Controller knows about it and he’s trying to find a way around but-”
“But the Maura Bridge can’t exactly be worked around,” Arrow finished.
“I’m really sorry,” Edward apologised but Arrow simply waved him off with a wheesh of steam.
“It’s fine!” Arrow beseeched. “We all have fears, Edward.”
“Yes,” Edward gave him a tired smile. “That being said, could you keep my little secret confidential?”
Arrow was silent for a moment as James glared daggers at him. It wasn't until he saw Edward’s pleading face that he relented.
“Alright, you can stop glaring at me James, I promise I won’t tell anyone,” he promised and Edward gave him a smile of relief.
“Thank you Green Arrow.”
“But people are going to complain, Boco’s pretty patient but I doubt he’ll do your jobs forever,” Arrow warned.
“I know,” Edward lamented. “But I’ll try to find something that works.”
~~~
A few nights later while pulling the Flying Kipper for Henry, Green Arrow caught sight of a pair of red and blue tender engines around the bridge over the Maura River and he smiled to himself knowingly.
a ramble on my personal canon that turned into a ramble about the production and universe implications of the TVS and RWS
*cracks knuckles despite not being able to* today i shall talk about my personal canon for ttte/rws because i'm in the mood for an infodump :sunglasses:
you may be wondering, jade, what the hell is this supposed to mean? basically it's me trying to stitch a patchwork of the classic series canon, hit era, cgi, rws, and my own oc stuff to my liking.
...and i'll also admit i wrote this really tired, but I wanted to infodump so bad. putting the rest below the cut!
so far, my most simple summary of it so far is that it's mostly the RWS with the timeline of the model series. things from the RWS happen in the order they happened in the TVS (albeit not with the exact same execution as the RWS or the TVS all the time). Series 5's events happen, as do series 6's and maybe some of series 7's? But also, events that didn't get adapted to the model series happen, as to characters, such as Bear and two entire railways. I also wanted to take some characters from hit era and beyond, albeit I'm not sure I have a complete list yet.
I'm also including the UHR, aka the Ulfstead Heritage Railway, my original smaller railway that kinda... happened. Basically, a variation on Toby's Discovery happens, and the controllers of the railways, not quite sure what to do with it, end up with an offer from my oc, Tiffany Lancaster. She offers to run the track and perhaps then some as a heritage railway. Restoration ensues! It connects to the Skarloey, as seemingly shown in the show, and the NWR. I also decided it runs around inside Ulfstead itself and a bit further south to the Ulfstead Castle and The Mansion, which I'm using the RWS canon for and saying they're a preserved castle and mansion-turned-expensive-fancypants-hotel respectively. Sorry, no Estate Railway here... maybe, I haven't watched relevant CGI episodes yet, but something about a castle on top of a mine sounds horribly structurally unstable. But it's not like anyone lives at that castle anyways.
Other things I'm consolidating include: Toby's Branch Line and the Arlesdale Railway run near each other, like in the 2014 map of Sodor. I've elected to put Toby's Old Line on Sodor like in the TVS. James's red coat of paint comes after his accident, like in the RWS and CGI canons. Thomas just kinda Showed Up, like in the RWS. And Henry doesn't need the special coal post-rebuild like in the RWS, albeit he still might have some occasional problems.
honestly, i just wanted to write this because I was sorting out my OC event timeline for my fanbooks, realized I've been using the TVS timeline the entire time, remembered I had a personal canon, and then went wild assigning series to events and year estimates.
And, to be fair, in-universe, these stories were NOT written at the time they happened or anywhere near 'em until much later into my fanbooks, if at all. My stories are written in modern day both in-universe and out because of whatever the heck the Secondman got up to, so this is a bit loose! And setting them in more vague years, like the TVS did, might help me in the long run somehow. Toward the Christopher Awdry part of the RWS's run, more stories were written just so the TVS could have stories to base things off of, so I'm genuinely unsure if they're supposed to be records of a past year in the RWS canon or set closer to the year they were written or what. I may have worded that weird because I'm tired, but basically, if those stories were written to be scrambled in with the others in the early TVS, does that mean that they took place during different times rather than when one would think the books are set?
Despite being the guy who posted the links to RWS resources, I still don't know as much as I'd like to, LOL. And consolidating multiple canons, while fun, is tiring. So with this, I shall end this ramble. Goodnight. I leave you with MS Paint Wesley whom I drew with a mouse and also whilst very tired. I could not wrap my head around perspective tonight LOL
Things had been very busy for the Trainyard Trio since Darius announced to his younger siblings that they were going to move to Sodor.  Cleo and Romeo had run as fast as they could to Tidmouth sheds to announce the news. The engines were elated, especially Thomas. Gordon tried to act like the sibling’s move was no big deal, but Edward saw right through the big engine’s charade. Edward knew Gordon would’ve missed them if they’d had chosen to go back home. There was a lot of work to be done. The Cuppers were busy going to and from realms via Lady to transfer their stuff from the normal realm to Sodor. Darius marched into his work and finally gave his boss the what for. ” I quit”!  Darius told the boss. He became red face and ordered Darius to come back so his former boss could give him an earful, but the young man ignored him and walked out the door, with two of his coworkers cheering him on.  The Earl kept his word and brought on Darius and Scotsman as members of Ulfstead castle. Romeo had to be a bit more careful when he returned to the normal realm, the gangs were still looking for him. As a precaution, the teen would leave late into the night with Darius.  One night though, Romeo decided to go without Darius. Instead, he brought Patty and Gordon along. The teen wanted to show his friends what a city from his realm looked like, he just hoped Lady would allow them to come along. Gordon’s driver and fireman were not available to operate Gordon, so Patty took up the position of driver while Romeo took on the role of fireman. The two got Gordon up and running, heading for Lady’s tunnel. When they arrived, Romeo was surprised to see that Lady wasn’t there. Since the move began the magical engine would meet up with Romeo by the tunnel then proceed to use her magic to turn the signal green, allowing them to transfer over to the normal realm. Romeo called out to her, but there was no answer. He was growing concerned. Patty noticed that the signal light was green and told Romeo that Lady might be in the tunnel.  The three of them felt hesitant, all of the legends and stories had said only magic engines like Lady and Wendell were able to pass through realms. Romeo wondered if the stories could possibly be wrong, since there was never any mention of what happens to a non- magical engine that tries to enter, nor if any non- magical engine has ever tried to pass through the realms on their own.   Romeo and Patty still felt unsure if the magic would allow Gordon to travel.  “You feeling up to it Big G”? Romeo asked the engine. Gordon looked into the endless void of the tunnel. He felt both excited and afraid, afraid of the unknown, yet excited to see what laid beyond Sodor’s vail.  “I wish to proceed.” Gordon answered. Romeo released Gordon’s breaks and the big engine slowly began rolling forward. Gordon felt Patty lay a comforting hand on the side of his cab, while Romeo was ready with the breaks in case anything happened, or Gordon decided he didn’t want to go through. As they passed through the tunnel’s entrance, Gordon shut his eyes and embraced for whatever awaited them   further in. “Crazy isn’t it”? Came Romeo’s voice. “My goodness! I feel like I’ve ended up in Alice’s Wonderland”! Patty proclaimed. Gordon opened his eyes and immediately became disoriented. He was traveling on a set of gold rails; they were floating in midair among a pink cloud filled void. There was no bottom and no ceiling. Other tracks could be seen going in all different directions to tunnels that led to who knows where. “How’re you holding up Gord”? Romeo asked. “Disoriented, very disoriented.” Gordon replied. “Just hang in there for a bit longer Big G, we’re almost there.” Romeo consoled. They were starting to approach the tunnel to the normal realm and although Gordon was going at a regular pace, the big engine felt like time had slowed to an agonizing crawl. The darkness of the other tunnel consumed the big engine, Gordon felt like his boiler was going to freeze over. He wasn’t scared of the dark, more of what could await them on the other side. At the other end of the tunnel Gordon could see a light. It was emitting from an old lamppost. “We’re here”! Romeo announced. Gordon felt himself begin to calm down, his attention more focused on the lamppost then the station he had stopped at. Gordon watched as two little moths fluttered about, bumping into the glass in an attempt to get to the light encased within. “Huh, that wasn’t working the last time I was here” Romeo commented. The teen helped Patty off of Gordon’s cabin. Her first view of the normal realm was the back of Shining Time station. “I must say, this doesn’t look that different from Sodor, though this station is quiet charming. There’s just something about it.” Patty commented. “Indeed, even I find this place “homely”.” Gordon added. Romeo chuckled. “The actual city is a little further down the line, but yeah old Shining Time certainly has its charm, despite being abandoned.” Romeo said. “Why would anyone want to abandon this place”? Patty asked confused. “Well, they didn’t. My mom was longtime friends with the people that took care of Shining Time. Their love and hard work really made this station shine and attracted many trains and people. Eventually word would spread around about the town and its charm and soon many people were moving here. At first things were fine, the town was growing, its economy was booming, and Shining Time station was busier than it had ever been. Eventually though, those good times weren’t to last. The newly named Shining Time city was also attracting a bad crowd, they saw this place as a gold mine whether for wealth or territory. Old gangs began taking up bits of the city, then new gangs formed wanting a piece of Shining Time pie. You have to understand that Shining Time had been a peaceful town for a very long time, so once these crimes started to pop up the town didn’t know what to do. This was their Achilles heel; the criminals and thugs knew this and took every inch. The final nail in the coffin happened here at the station. A high- profile gang member had been spotted at the station by a rival gang, he was by himself, and the rival gang saw this as their opportunity to take him out.  They pulled up to the front of the station and barraged the place with a flood of bullets. Everyone inside instantly became panicked. One of my mom’s friend’s, Billy Twofeathers, took charge and got as many people as he could to shelter. The gunfire would eventually stop, and the gang would flee the scene of the crime, they had achieved their goal.” Romeo said. Patty and Gordon were mortified. Neither of them could understand why someone would do that to others, but then again this wasn’t Sodor. The two realized now why Romeo didn’t want to come back. “After that the station closed down. Our friends still loved the station, but the city had become too dangerous to keep it up and running.” Romeo said sadly. Patty rested her head against Romeo as she wrapped her arms around him. “I’m so sorry they had to go through that. I hope one day the city can be safe again so they can return to the station.” Patty said. “Me too Patty, me too.” Romeo hoped as he looked up at the Shining Time station sign. Inside, Boomer had been watching. He scowled as he noticed that Romeo had arrived on another engine. He did though find it interesting that the engine was able to get through the realms without Lady and that the boy had brought over a Sudrian to the normal realm, that had never happened before. “The kid has a whistle; he must’ve made friends with that big tender engine. If that’s the case his two siblings might’ve done the same. I’ll be no match against a magical engine and three magic abled engines, looks like I’ll have to go with plan B after all.” Boomer thought. Back outside, Patty and Romeo hopped back on Gordon and went further down the line.  “I feel weak, Romeo why does my fire feel so low”? Gordon asked. “Sorry Gordon, but I need to keep your steam low. Steam engines haven’t run on these rails for a long time, and I don’t want to draw any attention to us.” Romeo said. They reached approached the city limits. Patty and Gordon looked on in awe at the tall skyscrapers and large televised advertising boards. Gordon felt a bit intimidated by the large buildings, the tallest building on Sodor couldn’t hold a match to the monstrosities before him. “You okay Big G? You’re shaking a bit.” Romeo observed. “I’m alright, just suffering a bit of vertigo.” Gordon said. “Why don’t we head back home, maybe after a good night’s rest you’ll feel better.” Romeo suggested. “Yes please.” Gordon said. There was no turntable, but the tracks were placed in a way that an engine could loop back around. Boomer waited in the shadows for Gordon to pass by. As the big engine made his way back through Shining Time station, Boomer ran and clung onto the back of Gordon’s tender. They passed through the tunnel once more and entered the weird space between realms. When he was a kid Boomer had been curious as to where the other tunnels led to, but now he could care less. All that mattered was to not fall off.  Once they were back on Sodor, Gordon became less tense. Patty was dropped off at home and she thanked Romeo for showing her the normal realm. As the two said their goodbyes Boomer released his grasp from Gordon’s tender and quietly made his way into the Sodor night. It was time to pay Wendell a visit.
No one asked for her but I love her so have my second OC, Erzsébet! (Or Elizabeth in English)
Tumblr media
I won't be going over her backstory in as much detail as I did for Ella, since it's the basically the same. But to summarize:
She spent her younger days working for the AU's equivalent of MÁV, often trying to get away from the nightmare of a company. This went on for decades, and somewhere along the line, executives had enough of her and her siblings' antics, resulting in all of them being locked up in an abandoned station with limited supplies, slowly watching most of her siblings die...
10 years after being locked up, STH, along with Edward, happened to come to Hungary for some reason I still haven't fleshed out and I'm sorry- well, Edward heard the last few siblings trying to get themselves noticed, he went to check it out, and one thing lead to the next and now they're all happily living on the Island of Sodor.
Personality:
Erzsébet is the polar opposite of her sister. Calm and collected, she's always eager to lend a helping hand. One might consider her the crew's grandma, going the extra mile just to make sure everyone's happy. And well fed. You can smell her chimney cakes from a mile away, they say. She's a very social person, loving to make some small talk with whoever runs into her. She's always there to comfort anyone in need. She's very huggable :]
She likes many things, like cooking and baking, knitting, crochet, embroidery, you know... Grandma things ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
For things she doesn't like, there aren't many. Mainly liars and dishonesty. And Diesel 10. She doesn't tend to dislike anyone, but Diesel 10 is a different case. She'll jump off to the ground before talking to him.
Since her wings were also chained up while being locked away for a decade, she can't really use them anymore. (Why can Ella use them then? Well, she's more stubborn and always tried to get them free.) So she works on the ground most days, at Ulfstead Castle with Stephen and Glynn, who she's now in a loving relationship with :].
She doesn't really get to work with Ella and the Steam Team, but she loves all of them regardless.
Sodor A Deeper Look
(Ulfstead Castle)
(Stephen and Millie are waiting at the station when Glynn arrives)
Glynn: The Earl said he wanted to see me
Millie: Us too.
Glynn: That means something's up.
Stephen: (Looking up) Where?
Glynn: No down here silly.
Stephen: How can something be up when it's down?
Glynn: I'll explain later. Look here comes The Earl
The Earl: Ah! Hello, engines. I have some great news! I have discovered a new engine!
Stephen: Where did you find this engine?
The Earl: An old standard gauge line buried under some rubble at the Crovan’s Gate Mining company.
(A whistle blows, and we cut to Glynn in a sign of shock.)
Glynn: No, it can't be!
(The engine puffs inside the castle. We see a box-shaped engine with the letter S&M, as well as a number 2 written on its sides. At first, the engine doesn’t speak, just staring at Glynn in a sign of shock until he begins to laugh, Glynn follows suit.)
???: Small world, isn’t it?
Glynn: Yes it is.
Stephen: You know this engine?
Glynn: Yes, I do. This is Neil. He's an old friend of mine before the North Western Railway formed
Millie: He looks like a narrow-gauge engine.
Neil:(chuckling) Oh goodness no. I may have worked with young Skarloey and Rheneus over a century ago, but I’m not a narrow gauge engine.
Millie: Goodness me! I knew they were old, but not that old!
(That night, at the sheds Millie Stephen and Glynn were resting in the sheds when Neil arrives, Stephen and Millie eye the foreign engine with eyes of curiosity)
Millie: Stephen and I were speaking, and we would like to know about your life before you were dug up.
Neil: I don’t see why not.
Neil: I was built in 1861 alongside my two brothers. My older brother Clive had trust issues, he was also very snarky, rude, and always able to find the worst in any given situation. My younger brother Matthew was always afraid of the worst-case scenario but nonetheless had a heart of gold. We were built to work on the Sodor and Mainland Railway. Upon its opening it ran from Crovan's Gate to Kirk Ronan with plans to expand beyond Sodor to the Mainland hence the name We each arrived at the Kirk Ronan Harbor due to there not being a bridge at the time. We worked peacefully together under our controller, Mr. Mack, he was manager of both the S&M railway and the Skarloey railway and we all respected him, even Clive who was very hard to please. For almost a decade we lived a practically peaceful life, until 1869 when a rumour began to spread. Unfortunately, the rumours turned out to be true.
Neil: Oi! Lads, have you heard the news?
Clive: Oh great, what is it this time Neil?
Neil: It's…
Mr.Mack: Listen up, you lot! I have some news for you! A new railway is opening next year that will start at Wellsworth and go beyond Brendam for a dockyard!
Clive: I knew working on such a small line on an island this size wouldn’t be peaceful for long!
Matthew: This might put us out of business!
Mr.Mack: Please quiet down! I have devised a plan! Their main contract is the docks so--
Clive: So if we expand our harbour, then we might put them out of business. Ingenious!
Mr.Mack: Precariously Clive!
Neil: That's no plan! That's a scheme!
Mr.Mack: If a scheme is what's necessary at this time then it must be done. Now hush! You should think before you speak back to your controller. Now, if you'll excuse me, I must be going home.
Neil: My opinion made no difference on the matter. They still went through with the scheme. Once the engines arrived, trouble began to brew, and unfortunately, Clive was the first to meet one of these engines.
Colin: Hello, I’m Colin. Who are you?
Clive: Shut up!
Colin: Pardon?
Clive: I said shut it! You're trying to steal our work! Well, I have news for you, inchworm! Your plan is going to fail! Now, get out of my territory! This isn't your place to crawl around!
Coin: No need to be rude. I was only trying to be friendly.
Neil: Clive's harsh words were heard throughout the yard and workmen began to echo what he said and when I had some very stern words for Clive that night in the sheds that night that I would prefer not to say.
Clive: Neil, let me tell you this. Times are changing. The world is changing. The world has moved on from us. That engine was larger, more modern and more powerful. I had the right to treat him how I did.
Matthew: I agree with Clive. If they succeed, that will put us out of business, but maybe we can be a bit more kind to them.
Clive: There is no such thing as kindness in this world. Everyone is only looking out for themselves.
Neil: Time passed. I was to deliver slate to Wellsworth for construction. where another engine was waiting. I asked the engine their name
???: What’s it to you?
Neil: I’m sorry for the way my older brother treated you.
???: That wasn't me he was being rude to. That was one of my colleagues. I never met any S&M engines until now, so I assumed you were all the same.
Neil: Oh dear, where are my manners? My name is Neil. Who are you?
Lille: Lillie. Nice to meet you. So, would you mind telling me why your brother is the way he is?
Neil: Clive was built first, so naturally, his trial was held first. However, men had bent the tracks the night before. Naturally, he crashed and although the damage wasn't major repairs were mandatory but they ignored his pleas more focused on us then him.
Lillie’s driver: Lillie, you need to get moving. You are two minutes behind schedule.
Lillie: Oh dear! Thanks, Neil. It was nice talking to you.
Neil: What I didn't realize was that Clive was nearby and listening to the conversation.
(S&M Sheds)
Clive: What the hell is wrong with you?
Matthew: Jesus?! Clive, what's wrong with you?!
Clive: What's wrong with me?! What's wrong with him?!
Matthew: What happened?
Mr.Mack: He engaged with the enemy!!
Clive: He told one of them about my test crash!
Mr. Mack: You should be ashamed of yourself, Neil!!
Neil: I know, sir. I am, sir.
Mr.Mack: Good, now that that's out of the way, I have some news to share! Our Harbor extension has been completed. However, these actions have put us in some minor debt and if this. All we can do now is hope that the extension proves profitable. Because if it doesn't we might as well sink into that harbour.
Neil: The expansion was able to prove its merit. However, the expansion combined with the contracts we already had caused difficulty for us to balance. To compensate for it we each were assigned a one contract to lighten the workload.
Mr. Mack: Clive brings trains to and from the harbour while also shunting in the harbour, Neil brings the slate from the mining company at Crovan's Gate down to the harbour, and Mathew, you'll handle the passenger services! Any objections?!
The S&M Engine: No, Sir!
Neil: We all adjusted to our new lives rather quickly. We never saw each other as often. Due to us deciding to spend the night at the sheds with our new residents for convenience's sake. A month passed since my encounter with Lillie, and I couldn’t get her out of my mind. Another W&S engine arrived at Crovan's Gate; he was to bring empty trucks to Crovan's Gate and replace them with slate trucks. He was larger and more powerful than Lillie or Colin. He was leaving when...
Matthew: (Applying his brakes) Lookout!
(the two engines braked as hard as they could and they stopped just in time as they were inches away from each other's buffers
???: Oh, I’m sorry. Please go ahead.
Matthew: No. No. I insist you go first. I'm in your way.
Neil: They kindly bantered back and forth, I sat in the yard watching with a grin until Matthew's passengers began to complain so the W&S engine pulled back up. For Matthew to arrive at the platform
Matthew: Thank you…
Adam: Adam.
Matthew: Nice to meet you, Adam. I’m Matthew.
Neil: Well, well, well. How kind of you, Matthew.
Matthew: Don’t startle me like that! And I wasn’t trying to be kind. I was only acting as I always do.
Neil: Adam came to Crovan’s Gate more often than other W&S engines; his presence in the yard was a delight, saying or doing what was on his mind. At this point, each of us S&M engines had spoken to our W&S counterpart. But little did we know what was going on in the northwest.
(The scene fades back to the present Glynn smiled while Millie and Stephen were in shock.)
Millie: Go on. Tell us what happened next.
Glynn:(Laughing) All in good time, Millie. For now (Glynn yawns) let's get some sleep.
