Cat's Bride Chapter 2

Two days.

It had been two days since Tohru woke up in the world of Zodiac Lover, and she was still trying to adjust. Hamasaki, the head maid of Dog's House, was firm in running a tight ship. This meant that Tohru and the other two maids of the house, Arisa and Saki, had to keep everything cleaned and ready for guests at any moment. Tohru had yet to meet any of the characters from the game that she remembered, but she chalked that up to the fact that she wasn't the player character. The player character was the one meant to meet and befriend these characters.

Last time I checked, I barely even qualify as a background character. I'm just an extra set dressing to make the house feel more alive.

Today, in particular, she'd been assigned to clean the hallway near where their guest was staying. Hamasaki had assigned it to her because of how well she'd been doing the past couple days. Tohru had accepted the assignment without hesitation, knowing that a refusal wouldn't make sense.

She wondered what the prince character was really like. All she knew about him was that he was handsome and sensitive and things like that. He was supposedly the best character in the game, though she'd heard debates on the matter.

I'll just lay low until I figure out what that voice meant by 'save him'.

She was so focused on her own thoughts that she didn't notice a loose floorboard and tripped over it, the bucket of soapy water flying out of her hands as she fell forward. Before she hit the ground, a hand grabbed her arm and pulled her to an upright position.

"Are you all right?" asked her rescuer. She blinked in surprise.

No way.

This was Yuki, the prince of the game. The one all the girls in her class had been utterly obsessed with. His hair was a silvery gray, his eyes a matching shade and his face delicate. Feminine. She could definitely see the appeal… and he'd just kept her from hitting the floor.

"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" she blurted, yanking her arm away. "I should've been watching where my feet were going! I'm sorry to have bothered you!"

"I'm not bothered at all." His eyes went to the loose floorboard. "That should be fixed before someone gets seriously hurt."

"Yes, I'll be sure to let Miss Hamasaki know." Tohru bowed politely. "Thank you for helping me. I should clean up this mess."

She went to run back down the hallway.

"Wait." She turned to face him. "What's your name?"

"Tohru. Tohru Honda."

"Well, Miss Honda, it's a pleasure to meet you."

"The same to you." She bowed again and took off to go get supplies to clean up the bucket of soapy water that had soaked the floor before it set in.

Oh my gosh, that was so embarrassing! I hope he doesn't tell Miss Hamasaki what happened.

She managed to find a mop and rushed back to the hallway, taking care to avoid the loose floorboard that had tripped her up as she began to soak up the water. Oh, she'd definitely have to get that floorboard fixed before someone else tripped on it. And of course she'd been the one to trip over it, given how clumsy she tended to be.

"Do you need some help?" asked a voice. She looked up to see Yuki standing over her and she yelped in surprise, nearly throwing the soaked rag into the air.

"Oh, no, of course not! This is my job! I can't possibly make you do this kind of work!"

"I want to help you," he told her, crouching beside her and taking another dry cloth to the puddle.

"I-I mean, if you want to, I won't stop you. B-but this really is my job."

"If Miss Hamasaki makes things difficult for you, let me know. I'll be sure to set the record straight."

He gave her what she could only internally describe as a princely smile.

I definitely see the appeal of someone like him!

Yuki let out a sigh as he arrived in the dining room.

"What's wrong?" Shigure asked, looking up from the papers he was rifling through.

"Nothing. Just…"

He thought back to the maid who'd apologized so profusely and tried to deny him helping her.

"People are strange."

"Which people?"

"That maid. Miss Honda."

Shigure set down the papers and smirked. Yuki caught the meaning immediately and rolled his eyes in response.

"Not in that way. She's just… not like any of the other maids I've ever met here at the estate."

"I picked her because she was a hard worker. And she's so adorable!"

"Please don't."

"Um… excuse me?"

They both looked up to see Tohru standing in the doorway carrying a tray of food.

"Your dinner," she stated, setting it down.

"Thank you, Miss Honda," Yuki told her.

"It was my pleasure." She smiled in such a warm way that Yuki hadn't seen on another person's face for a long time. Shigure took notice.

"Miss Honda, thank you for all your hard work."

"I-it's not just me!" she insisted. "I-I mean, there's Uo-chan and Hana-chan and Miss Hamasaki, too!"

"Ah, but none of them are quite as adorable as you are."

Tohru's face turned pink and Yuki let out a frustrated groan.

"Please, Miss Honda, you may return to your duties," he insisted. "Do it now, before this gets worse."

"Y-yes, sir." She bowed and dashed out of the room. Shigure pouted at his younger cousin.

"Come on, Yuki, why'd you have to spoil my fun?"

"Because she's my age, you idiot. You shouldn't be flirting with girls my age."

"I wasn't flirting. I was simply stating the obvious. Are you saying you don't find Miss Honda adorable?"

Yuki choked on the tea he'd started sipping.

"That's not the point!"

"I think it is."

The younger Soma let out a sigh and turned his attention to the food. He had overheard Miss Hamasaki telling Tohru it was her job to cook, so all of this had been done by her. He'd noticed it had a tendency to be better some days than on others, and he wondered if those days were Tohru's doing.

One bite all but confirmed his suspicions.

As night fell, Tohru found it difficult to sleep.

She slid out of bed and quietly walked out of the house, feeling a need to walk around. Maybe that would help her feel tired enough to drift off. Plus, she'd spent most of her time in the house since she'd been here. This was her chance to explore a bit without anyone stopping her.

As she walked, she took notice of landmarks so she wouldn't get lost. She wondered how many Somas lived around the estate, and where the rest of the ones who were routes in the game were. She didn't know much about the others due to them not being quite as popular with the people around her as Yuki and Shigure.

Before too long, she'd wandered down a trail and found a small building. It looked like some kind of dilapidated cottage, and like it should've been locked. But it wasn't. The lock had snapped off. Part of her was begging to go back to the house, but another part was saying to open the door and go in. She listened to the latter.

It opened with a quiet creak and revealed a set of stairs leading to a dimly-lit dungeon of some kind. She descended the stairs, taking in her surroundings until she saw there was only one cell in the prison. It was more of a cage, about the same size as her bedroom in her previous life (that is to say, not very big), and at first glance it appeared to be empty.

She nearly slipped on the bottom step and yelped, catching herself on the railing. Quickly she clapped a hand over her mouth. But then she saw someone stirring in the cage. They'd sat upright upon hearing her yelp.

"Who's there?" called a young man's voice. He had a tinge of panic to his tone. "What are you doing here?"

"I-I'm sorry!" she squeaked. "I didn't mean to disturb you!"

The person in the cage turned to face her and she grabbed a lamp off the wall, holding it up to see that it was a young man about her age. His hair was a coppery-orange, his eyes a dull amber. Like he'd lost his will to live and fight while inside the cage. He was also incredibly handsome. Tohru felt her heart skip a beat at the sight of him, and he stared at her. A bit of light came back into those eyes before he tore his gaze away.

"Who are you?" he asked.

"I'm… Tohru Honda. Who are you?"

He curled into a ball, refusing to look at her. The broken way he sat made her heart hurt.

"You have to have a name. What am I going to call you?"

"…Monster."

"Y-your name is Monster?"

"No. But it's what everyone calls me."

She racked her brain, trying to remember if there had been any character like that in the game. None came to mind, but this was still confusing. Why was he called that? He didn't seem like a monster.

"I don't think I will. Doesn't anyone call you your actual name?"

"…someone used to. But he isn't allowed to see me anymore." He glanced up. "Does anyone know you're down here?"

"Not… really? I couldn't sleep so I went for a walk and I found this place."

He blinked.

"You… randomly found the Cat's Room?"

"The Cat's Room?" She tilted her head.

"Never mind."

"Well, I'll come see you again sometime, if that's okay."

"I don't care if you do. Do what you want."

"All right, then. I'll see you soon." She turned to leave.

"…Kyo."

"Hm?" She turned to face him and he was avoiding her gaze.

"My real name. It's Kyo Soma."

"All right then… Kyo."

She put the lamp back and walked up the stairs carefully, closing the door and rushing back the way she'd came. It didn't take long for her to reach the house again—the Dog's House, as Hamasaki had called it—and she found her way up to her bed. She should've found it harder to sleep after something like that, but she closed her eyes and drifted off soon enough.

"Tohru."

A woman with orange hair stood before her, a woman Tohru knew all too well.

"Mom? Is that you?"

Kyoko Honda was wearing clothes that Tohru had never seen her in before—clothing that seemed to be from the same era Tohru was currently in. Her mother approached with a smile and Tohru ran towards her, throwing her arms around the woman who'd been dead for so long.

"My baby girl. You've gotten so much older…"

"Is Dad here, too?"

"Not yet. It's just me."

Tohru's eyes went over her mother's hair. Suddenly she thought of Kyo in the Cat's Room, his hair being the same shade.

"He needs you, you know."

"Who?"

"You'll know. If I tell you, it won't happen right."

"It's Kyo, right? He needs me because he's locked up?"

"…yes. It's him. And not just because he's locked up."

"Do you know why I was brought here? Instead of dying?"

"Dying?" Kyoko's eyes widened.

"I was hit by a car. Then I woke up here. I'm not unhappy being here instead of…"

Kyoko stroked her hair gently.

"My sweet girl… you've been through so much."

"And it's about to get worse."

There was another person there now, a woman with shoulder-length reddish-brown hair. Her voice was familiar, just clearer and brighter than Tohru remembered. This was the person who'd talked to her before.

"Tohru Honda." The woman nodded. "I chose you for a reason."

"Why? Can you explain any of it?"

"I will. Once things play out as they're meant to, I'll explain everything in the waking world. You won't see me until then."

"W-wait!"

Tohru gasped as she sat up in bed. Arisa had been prodding her.

"You were talking in your sleep," the blonde told her bluntly. "Everything okay?"

"Y-yeah, I'm fine. Thanks, Uo-chan." She gasped again, panicking as she threw off the covers. "Oh my gosh, am I late?"

"No, you're fine. If anything, you're up early. You woke me up with your muttering."

"I'm so sorry…"

"Eh, had to get up sooner or later. I can't be mad at you." She glanced at Tohru's nightclothes. "Did you go for a walk or something? Your dress is all muddy."

"Yeah, I had trouble sleeping."

"Just be careful where you go, okay? Hamasaki told me there's a few places you don't want to wander into by accident. Like this weird little cottage that's way out of the way—it's dangerous."

Tohru swallowed. She didn't dare tell Arisa about Kyo, or that she'd gone to the cottage.

Kyo needed her.

And she'd find out why as soon as she helped him.

StarPre: Zodiac Forms

Now that I’ve got the good quality official art, c’mon, did anyone seriously think I would not ramble about the zodiac forms in another long post? :P lol

Crap, I should be studying my Japanese since I’m traveling to Tokyo next week (GONNA GO VISIT THE PRECURE STORE, WOOOOT~!) but I want to get this post out first cuz I know I won’t have time or internet access to do it later.

So let’s do this!

Taurus form – BRAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDSSSSSSSSSS

This one I like best out of Star’s two forms (but Pisces is awesome too!) for that reason but I also love how they changed her short tutu-style skirt into an asymmetric, flowing one. And that cow pattern is to die for~! <3

The butterfly earrings and horns are a very nice touch as well! *chef’s kiss*

Pisces form – I can’t explain why or how Hikaru pulls off the mermaid look so well…but she just does, okay?

Maybe it’s the twintails.

Anyways, super cute! Adding a touch of blue and deep magenta to the overall light pink theme really makes her look more tropical.

Then there are the sea accessories and ugh! Sometimes when I look at this, I’m reminded of Mermaid Melody except the way Star is designed here looks a lot more fun.

Before I get into this, I just want to say that we can now celebrate Lala’s bubble shorts blooming into space dresses! Aaaaaahhh~ <D

Leo form – Y’know when I saw Lala go “RAWR!” in the movie trailer, I was like “This is it, if this is the last thing I see, I’ll be happy I lived”, hahaha!

Lion imagery is just so cool, y’know? (as Gelato can testify)

The wild hair, the crown.

Yeap. This pretty much confirms it. Lala is Space Queen. ;D

Cancer form – I’m simultaneously gushing over her crab hair, how much I love this shade of yellow green and giggling mad that she resembles a jellyfish more than a crustacean. xDD

*sigh* Really, I think Lala’s forms turned out the best. They faithfully captured the aesthetics of the Star Princesses while retaining Milky’s original design and without making it overly gaudy, too.

Lala, you are perfect! <3

Libra form – Normally, I would say that’s too crazy for even crazy magical girl hair but then I remember Felice’s Alexandrite form and how extra that was in all its Mother Nature floral glory…

…and I just shut my trap.

Still, it seems like Libra form had the least effort put into it.

I mean, yea, they moved some colors around (more like seeped the orange into the ombre of Soleil’s hair) and extended the reaches of her dress but it’s practically the same thing save for Libra’s hairdo…which looks more like a wig she put on that anything.

That’s just it. The dual cornucopia there catches your attention right away on how…fake it looks that it’s as if the rest don’t matter as much. Which is sad cuz the Libra Star Princess is perhaps one of the best Star Princesses based on what little personality we did get from each of them. And I just wanted to see something more creative for her form, that’s all. :(

Maybe it’ll look better in motion? We’ll just have to see if that happens in the movie. As of right now, this still picture isn’t really helping my impression of it.

Scorpio form – Much better. Absolutely adore the slimmer cut and my, does Elena look downright gorgeous with a ponytail! <D

I’m always reading about how “full of passion” Scorpios are and while I don’t let those descriptions get in the way of appreciating their characters, have to admit that “passion” was the first word that came to my mind when I saw Soleil in this form.

She literally looks like a goddess of sunsets. Beautiful.

Capricorn form – Still not sure if I’m the type of person who favors something just because I so happen to share a quality or trait with that one certain aspect of a character…

And I freely admit that the Capricorn form is not the best of bunch (though it’s definitely not the worst)…

…but it looks unarguably lovely regardless and I love it with all my heart because me is a Capricorn, after all~ <3

The tiny hearts themselves may be a bit much but it’s part of Capricorn Star Princess’s design so honestly, I have zero problem with it. They’re adorable~

Then I kinda squealed because Selene traded her umbrella/lamp shade skirt for a fancy bed canopy! LOL xDD

But most of all, it’s simply wonderful to see Madoka with wavy hair (AGAIN WITH THE HAIR!). Ooooo, gotta love that transition from light purple to fuchsia! X3

Like I said before, they made the Cures’ respective color schemes and the Star Princesses’ color schemes quite compatible. But that’s a given since they’re within close range of each other anyway.

Sagittarius form – Ok, I may have said Lala’s forms looked the best but I believe the Sagittarius form alone can blow everyone else’s out of the sky.

I mean, look at her! Isn’t she friggin’ STUNNING?!

The long side pony tail (*SCREAMS*), the mature vibe the long gown gives off and most of all, MADOKA HOLDING AN ACTUAL BOW AND ARROW AND LOOKING LIKE A WARRIOR MAIDEN DESCENDING FROM THE HEAVENS TO PURGE THE EVIL FROM THIS WRETCH WORLD!!

HAAAAAA……I dunno why I get so emotional over form changes, I just do.

Alright, first things first. This is not the place for me to spill my grievances about Cosmos in general so rest assured, I won’t do that. But I am allowed to say one thing.

Toei. I don’t understand your incomplete logic.

Cure Cosmos is a rainbow Cure. You either give her all twelve differently colored forms or you give her none at all.

Seriously, it makes no sense that she gets four zodiac forms, leaving the other girls with only two when we could have had:

1) the original starters with three zodiac forms each

2) Cosmos with either twelve (because SHE’S THE CURE OF EFFIN’ RAINBOWS!!) or one exceptionally glorified rainbow super form (with seven cat tails because RAINBOWS!!)

This is less about midseason Cure privilege (which Cosmos has heaps of) or the fact that they won’t be able to fit so many forms in an hour long special (it’s movie budget so piss off!) and more about not doing your math right to get the best, maximum output! xP

*sigh* Ok, petty raging done (for now). Moving along…

Aries form – As some of you may know, I’m not a fan of Cosmos’ rainbow skirt but I find I can easily overlook that (along with the cat ears, the flat top hat décor, the weird braids and the dorito clips) to appreciate the full picture.

And the Aries form may just be my most favorite out of Cosmos’ forms. Since Aries is the ram constellation, the white wool trim looks appropriate, especially against the crimson of her outfit. Frankly, I think Cosmos looks better in this red design than her normal blue-rainbow Cure form.

Then there’s the poofy (kyaa~!) hair that just acts so well as a backdrop to the ram horns.

Mm, yes, definitely my favorite. *nod nod*

Gemini form – Again, where the fuck were you when Met Gala was happening this year?!

Like, this would not only fit right in with the camp theme but could’ve won best dressed that night!

The only thing I’d consider getting rid of is the rainbow but then it’d probably look less campy so maybe not.

Anyways, I was the least fond of this form when I first saw it but the more I look at it, the more I’m learning to like it…??

The red cape (and cherry earrings) provides a sharp contrast to all the green going on, too.

Virgo form – Azure blue complements light pink and white in a very angelic sort of way. Pretty~

Cosmos’ hair also looks delightfully charming when it’s curled and has a flower decoration in it.

…That’s all I have to say, really.

Oh no, wait.

It’s extremely odd to me that Cosmos gets two zodiac forms that correspond to other Cures’ birthday signs and she doesn’t even get the form of her own birthday sign.

Hikaru’s is Aries and Elena’s is Virgo. Look who got those forms.

Yuni’s sign is Libra. That form went to Soleil instead.

…WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?! >:/

Aquarius form – Is it just me or do the rainbow pleats actually work here?

We’re dealing with water and the droplet beads attached to the ends really reminds me of the rain so that’s probably why.

Cosmos’ hair also looks mega good in waves, too.

And the stars~! Exquisite!

On another note, again she always comes as a strange package because if cats in general hate water, then pairing Cosmos up with Aquarius is the biggest mismatch of them all, them both having a blue theme be damned. xD;

*SIGH* Finished!

…Or not. One last thing. There’s always one last thing.

It’s just a real shame that these forms are exclusive to the movie. I mean, I know we all have our opinions on whether or not Form Changes are actually useful in the tv series (I don’t care, I just like looking at them and that’s reason enough for me)…

But the stock footage was severely underwhelming for StarPre so having these in the show may have done some good to alleviate that feeling.

Also, the Zodiac forms have a much closer relation to the space motif than the Twinkle forms do. Seriously, the most noticeable things about the Twinkle forms are the tiaras and it’s weird because we already have the Star Princesses. So WHY do we need to put tiaras on the Cures? They’re not aiming to become princesses themselves, they’re channeling the powers of the stars (aka the Zodiac princesses!) so they should take on appearance respective of the star signs!

Again, I really don’t understand Toei logic.

……AND ONE MORE THING! OMGODD

Is there anyone out there who tried to draw what the first four Cures would look like in the forms that went to Cosmos? And if there is, may I see them? Please, pretty pretty please please please?!?!?

The whole episode was played during the Miraculous Ladybug panel for SDCC so for those that wish to wait for the proper release, I will keep everything hidden under the “keep reading” tab. (it’s going to be super long anyway)

Great, LET’S GET INTO IT!

HOLY SHIT I LOVED THIS EPISODE❤❤ (I say that for pretty much almost all episodes but can you really blame me?)

The friendship challenge sounded like a such a cute and cool concept that I personally really liked. Like you know how we have so many National something days that nobody really cares to much to even remember? PARIS DOESN’T HALF-ASS ANYTHING Y’ALL. They take the concepts that TRULY matter and make sure it is celebrated, respected, and appreciated to its fullest. Making sure to remind everyone about what’s truly important, keeping their faith in humanity strong, strengthening the communities bonds, just like in Heroes Day! It’s honestly just such a sweet feeling and I really wish people would talk about this concept more. I can’t wait too see what other fun events the show has planned.

Tomoe continues to be a badass. A good mother? ......UHHHH 😬😬

Aaww, Kagami just wants more friends.

WTF, THEIR CAR??? OKAY THEN. I guess I really shouldn’t be so surprised since they ARE rich. (Especially since Gabriel has a freaking hologram in his car, so that really makes the Tsurugi’s pale in comparison)

Ooooohhh clever girl. I love how both Kagami and Adrien are rebellious against their commanding parents.

(No hate towards Marinette, I love her with all my heart, but the girl still has to seriously work on her emotions)

KAGAMI TRYING TO SMILE IS MY FAVORITE (everyone is a constant mood in this show)

I love how there are so many awkward characters, and how the writers did such a good job showing how different characters with different upbringings have different ways of displaying that. Just like with any other emotions or personal issues, it is a wide spectrum and never just one-dimensional thing. I appreciate it so much is because as a very awkward person myself, I can relate. It feels nice to have something like that be acknowledged and positively included and definitely helped boost my confidence when I was younger🥰.

Okay Marinette is definitely 100% me I’m really indecisive as well

*Kagami listing down Marinette’s traits to determine her blood type* “Split personality” Excuse me?? The reason it stuck out to me the most is because the definition of split personality is: Another term for dissociative identity disorder; A rare psychological disorder in which two or more personalities with distinct memories and behavior patterns apparently exist in one individual. In this case the different personalities have no memory or even knowledge of the others existence. ...WELL I’m pretty sure Marinette doesn’t have DID but if you think about it... What if Kagami meant it as a, less extreme, figure of speech to describe Marinette’s behavior? Marinette is filled surprises, so much so, that I honestly have a hard time figuring her character out. She may seem like a simple, typical shoujo-esque character but OH NO MY DUDE. I HEAVILY disagree. (But that’s a different post all together for another day)

“HEY”

Cue montage of Marinette trying to screw everything up but Kagami still wins with ease (aka Chaotic Neutral vs No Bullshit🤣)

“Trust exercise. Exchange unlocked phones with your partner.” OH NO. PHONE THIEF MARINETTE MAKES A COMEBACK

MARINETTE DON’T GO THROUGH HER PHONE

Wait Kagami doesn’t even have Adrien’s contact? And she even searched up how to make friends. AWW MY POOR LONELY BABY, MUST PROTECT AT ALL COSTS.

Not to mention how proud I was of Marinette for immediately realizing her mistake and wanting to fix everything between the two of them. I will definitely make a future post about the relationship development between Marinette and Kagami, but all I can say now is that there has been HEAVY miscommunication between them up until this moment. Both girls did not have a good impression on the other leading to false interpretations and a overall poor thought of character towards each other. In Marinette’s case, she thought Kagami was full of herself with her bold and and competitive streak, due to her many success in the the past. She thought Kagami literally couldn't care less about others but learned it was quite the opposite. Kagami yearns for friends and companionship but is just awkward at showing it. Learning that, Marinette changes her idea about Kagami completely and wants to make her wish come true.

“Are all humans this noisy?” Marinette just smiles awkwardly. AT LEAST SHE’S SELF-AWARE (Seriously I’m glad their bringing up this unhealthy behavior, my girl needs to CHILL)

AW NO SHE SAW THE VIDEO, NO BABY, FUCK OFF HAWKMOTH

AH SHIT HER MOM FOUND OUT SHE LIED

MARINETTE IS PROTECTING KAGAMI.

KAGAMI IS GENUINELY GRATEFUL FOR THAT AND CHEERS UP

I’M GOING TO CRY THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL

I honestly love how in a second, their relationship took a complete 180. Marinette just suddenly becomes very protective and attentive towards Kagami. I LITERALLY HAVE NO WORDS FOR HOW I FEEL AFTER SEEING THAT.

So yeah! That basically summarizes all my (MANY) feelings about this wonderful episode! I loved the theme of friendship, the development between my two best girls, the akuma battle and dragon miraculous, all the asian cultural references, there was just so much to digest. Ikari Gozen was definitely a character heavy episode that adds so much more context and depth to the overall understanding and arcs for both Marinette and Kagami, there is only so much more to go from here! With that said I will definitely do my best to come up with a full blown analysis post for both girls and how their relationship developed and some for Kagami alone as well (Mari too of course, that just might take a bit longer). There is already something I have in the works😉...

i want to take a moment to acknowledge

that as much as Yuki is a jerk, he has actually tried really, really hard in his life?

(looking at my notes, this post was partially sponsored by the martial arts flashback in ep 9 of the reboot, partially inspired by the Kisa ep, and partially because I realized that our girl Tohru done Yuki real dirty in ep 1)

Because this is a thing I tend to forget about Yuki--that he has tried so hard. It's partly because he doesn't see himself that way ("Why am I so weak, why do I give into peer pressure to be liked, why didn't I just run away from home and live in the woods as a child if I didn't like being abused???" Yuki no). Yuki, like Kisa, is actually pretty damn good about asserting himself and being proactive. The problem, same as for Kisa, is that it just literally doesn't work.

So. Bitty Yuki gets sold to Akito as a playmate. This starts to go south, and Yuki repeatedly tells mom to please get him out of there. It doesn't work, of course, mom won't hear anything that would inconvenience her, but Yuki uses what is available to him and tries his best. It isn't his fault he fails miserably.

Still bitty, Yuki realizes that he hasn't ever spoken to anyone but, like, his mom and Akito. He would like to change this, but Ayame seems (rightly so) like a very anxiety-inducing place to start. Yuki runs into Kyou, admires his orange hair, and decides this is a perfect place to start making the friends he would like to have. Kyou, projecting the shit his sperm donor has been giving him, tells Yuki to go die. And then his mom slaps him for wandering off, like what if Akito had been looking for you, huh. Rude.

So Akito keeps telling Yuki that everyone hates him and no one cares about him. Yuki has picked up from his mom that this might actually be a true thing, but he decides to be proactive anyway and reach out to Ayame. Well that did jack but you tried, son.

Yuki starts school. Yuki still wants friends very much but he is very tired and dislikes being hurt, so he tries not to interact much, which is not difficult because he has had so much practice. Friends find him anyway, but unfortunately Yuki blows the family secret. Yuki tries to appeal to Akito to keep his friends. Yuki cries on Hatori lots to appeal to him to keep his friends. But the rules are the rules. Now Yuki has no friends and he's tireder than ever.

Yuki decides to fuck this shit and run away from home with no end goal in mind, but idk this sure sounds like tent life to me. Luckily for him he meets Tohru though, and the sight of a mom that actually cares about her child is so inspiring, and being a necessary presence that helps Tohru is so gratifying, that Yuki is saved from tent life and goes back home filled with determination to do his best and live a good life.

Haru confronts Yuki with the "fuck you the Rat ruined my life" speech and Yuki, still buoyed up on Tohru-induced self-acceptance, is like "wait no I've got this maybe...just because people say you are a certain way...doesn't mean it's true? Maybe people are just mean? I bet you're not actually stupid really." Congrats Yuki, you did a good thing~

Timeline is a bit fuzzy now but here's what I think. I am very glad the reboot clarified the "didn't you enjoy martial arts" scene because I could always tell it was very Significant but could not really interpret the meaning from it. I kind of vaguely assumed "Akito is menacing because Akito" and "martial arts just kind of happens to Yuki because it was suggested it was good for his health" and "I guess that's Shishou being all mentoring with Haru??" Now we've got Kyou and Haru messing around with training together...I'm going to posit it's at the Main Estate, that this takes place before Yuki starts taking martial arts. I bet Yuki watched them, like he watched everyone walking to school together being friendly. This is a thing he desperately wants to have and doesn't know how to acquire. And he can't change where he goes to school (and school friends went poorly anyway), but he can press to have martial arts lessons. If Kyou and Haru both take martial arts and hang out together and are friends, then if Yuki also takes martial arts the same thing will happen to him, right??? So I think Yuki proactively pressed and pressed and pressed to take martial arts lessons, and people were like "well it might actually be good for his health so why not let him, Akito?", so Yuki won the battle but lost the war because it didn't make Kyou like him and it didn't get Yuki out of the grip of Akito's isolation.

Possibly it helped contribute further to Haru befriending him and being the only person who would sneak into Yuki's ~special isolated Cat Room Lite~ to see him. But Yuki has put a lot of effort into this and now he's getting tired again and at some point he starts getting mean towards Kyou because fuck you, Kyou, okay so everyone says they hate you and you suck and you're going to be locked up for the rest of your life but right now your amazing dad loves you and you live outside the estate with real people and you have friends who smile at you every day and your hair is so cool???? While everyone says they love me and I'm special and I'm going to be very successful at whatever career my mom picks out for me but right now literally no one but Haru gives a shit about me and I live in a dark isolated room with only Akito to visit me and I would die to have people smile at me on a regular basis and also friends and my hair is styled the same as Akito's for some reason that no one remembers??? Like Kyou if you're gonna throw all this away in order to get locked up in the Main Estate which is not that great trust me at least give me your damn life you shitface.

Still, Yuki manages to regroup in trying to be proactive about his life if not in trying to be friends with Kyou. Yuki's old enough now, he can definitely get away with applying all on his own to an unapproved normal-people-co-ed high school. So he does! And he's like "surprise, mom!" who does not take it well and is like "since when have you ever been unhappy or complained about your life, why would you let Ayame put you up to this" and also "yes duh you are literally just a tool for me to use is there? some kind of problem here??" and Yuki's all "well I have been dealt a mortal blow, not only am I not going to be allowed to get away with my scheme but even my mom doesn't believe I'm a real person and also my words and thoughts and feelings are literally powerless, guess I'll just never speak again." Except it feels a lot less melodramatic and more desperate from his end of things.

But all is not lost! Because even though Haru begged Shigure to get Yuki out of the Main House, and Shigure probably went along with it solely half for the lulz and half because it fit into his curse-weakening scheme and not at all because of Yuki as a person, it must be noted--we specifically see Yuki breaking his spiral just long enough to beg Shigure himself with his own words. Shigure has presented himself, and Yuki is trying to use what is available to him! Get him the fuck out of here.

So Yuki moves in with Shigure. Yuki goes to a normal people high school. Yuki decides to pretend to be a real normal person! It doesn't really work because people at Kaibara are weird about how gorgeous and high-class Yuki is and put him up on an isolating pedestal, and because of his life experience Yuki can only assume this is because they hate him and he sucks, not because they are all incapacitated with weird idolized love for him. Oh well!

Then one day one of Yuki's classmates just...shows up outside his house one morning? Like okay then what the fuck? But Yuki realizes...he can make the best of this! Shigure has probably introduced him to rom-coms by now, and if not, at least Yuki remembers the things he has envied from his childhood. Yuki is going to walk to school together with this girl and they will become friends maybe.

But as I said, our girl done Yuki dirty in that ep 1. Tohru, the person most likely to keep an entire conversation going the whole walk to school, even if it's most about her mom, even if it's a little weird. Tohru, the person who instantly friends everyone, even if they don't friend her back. Tohru…

...gets exactly as weird as everyone else at school, gets incapacitated by Yuki being good-looking, and doesn't say a single thing the entire way to school. Yuki and Tohru don't form an instant magical friendship bond. Tohru doesn't even share a single mom wisdom. Tohru. Our Tohru.

Yuki's bad at giving up. He tries to talk to Tohru again after school when she runs into him again. It doesn't go any better because basically all Tohru says is "Gosh I love Kyou he's the best zodiac." Like okay you seem nice or whatever but your taste is shit???

And then...Yuki reaches his peak assertive stubbornness. He runs into Tohru a third time on like that same day. Third time is the charm. Tohru is homeless and needs a place to live and apparently won't just, like, talk to her family or friends about it. Yuki's not a bad person but, like Shigure, I don't think he's doing this solely for Tohru. Yes they have a spare room but I think he's partly like "fuck the main estate, I go to a co-ed school I can even live with girls if I want!" and also partly like "OKAY SO WALKING TO SCHOOL DIDN'T WORK BUT I KNOW, I KNOW HOW ROM COMS GO, I HAVE WATCHED AN ANIME AND READ A MANGA, IF I JUST TELL HONDA SHE LIVES HERE NOW BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A TENT ANYMORE, WE CAN'T NOT BECOME FRIENDS. YOU CAN'T JUST NOT BECOME FRIENDS LIVING IN AN IMPROPERLY SUPERVISED HOUSE TOGETHER IN HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE OF WACKY CIRCUMSTANCES. I'M GOING TO FINALLY GET SOCIALIZED."
