Rewatching Ryoko's Case File from 2008, despite quickly remembering why I dropped it fifteen years ago. Crafting such a direly bland OP sequence from bishojo body shots was quite a feat for one thing. The titular cases are pedestrian stuff, not very successful in their efforts to be either interestingly fantastical or believably grounded. True-to-life political corruption and giant monsters in the sewers are not complementary. The show stands or falls on Ryoko, the titular maverick police inspector. Unerringly competent, self-assured, successful and independent - an ideal female action hero, in the worst sense.
Her entitlement and self-centredness are absolute; her character as deep as a puddle with a mile of leg. The difficulty of sympathising with characters who never fail, never sacrifice, never conceive of self-doubt or uncertainty, and never suffer, is Good Writing 101. If Ryoko were one of many male anime heroes who get away with ignoring this rule...I wouldn't be rewatching her series. So I suppose a female James Bond was actually somewhat worth the candle. While Ryoko's one-sided flirtation with her immensely boring everyman of an assistant is unhealthy and everymale-reader-indulgent, it doesn't detract from her competence as a heroine, or the judgement of the show as an overall 6/10.
Although I wonder if my own accustomed style of piling trauma, sexual assault and misery on female characters to elicit sympathy and justify the heroine's eventual success (often rewarded with, among other things, great sex), is altogether right. Certainly, it can be taken too far; certainly, it shouldn't be the respectable heroine's only path. Even Rose of Versailles, where Lady Oscar's numerous failures and ignomanies are almost completely eclipsed by her glorious spirit, isn't perfect. Ikeda certainly didn't fire through the same bullseye with Oniisama e, although I'm currently finding that show a very good one.
My nostalgia (mental masturbation?) somewhat concerns me as well. There are dozens of 'essential' games and shows I never touched in my teens and twenties; games pouring out now that thousands of others derive great pleasure from, while I will never have the time. I don't expect to ever be called a serious gamer, anime fan writer or reader, although I do nothing else worth speaking of, but while I still live I am what I am.

Oh no the soft power is working
Tumblr media
On a real note tho, I love how the show seem to obviously want to say "man this was great why is this over" while being surprisingly (maybe unknowingly) honest enough to show pretty well why an imperial system is quite unhealty to even its rulers.
I guess Erdogan was not SO wrong in crying about the show not being neo-ottoman bootlicking enough?

The Beasts of Paris by Stef Penney
Set in Paris in the second half of the 1800s during deprivations of the Franco-Prussian war and then the inhumanity of the civil war between the Paris Commune and the French government of the Third Republic, the Communards against the Versailles.
This historical novel is told through the eyes of several individuals from different strata of society and is rich in detail of the atrocities.
Perhaps for me, I needed a clearer focus of whose story it was?  While the book starts with several individual voices, some fictional some real, seemingly of equal importance to us, the reader, along the way, their stories seems to diminish and perhaps the main two protagonists to emerge are Ellis and Lawrence, an American and Canadian respectively living in Paris at the time, who find love.    I have no problem with it becoming Ellis and Lawrence’s stories it’s just that having met the other characters I would like to have stayed with them more or, for Ellis and Lawrence to have been drawn more thoroughly at the beginning.  I was left with so many questions.
However, the details of the of the history are fascinating.  As any reader of these posts know, I love learning history through good historical fiction and this is no exception.  I knew a little bit of the Franco-Prussian war but had no idea about the aftermath and how all those historical buildings, palaces, parks and boulevards in Paris we know and love were destroyed along with so many lives.  Like most civil wars, the way neighbour turns upon neighbour is beyond distressing.
Recommended.

The Queen of Versailles (2012)
Tumblr media
Documentarian Lauren Greenfield hit the jackpot with The Queen of Versailles. There’s no way she could’ve foreseen what this story would turn into when she sat down to interview Jackie and David A. Siegel. It’s a compassionate look at people who fall upon hard times, a riot as you watch the wealthy get knocked down a peg, a sharp piece of social criticism, a microcosm of the damage done by the 2008 housing market crisis and a look at someone who "did it!" and achieved the ultimate American Dream. It's so many things wrapped up into one you’ll want to hit “play” again as soon as it ends to compare what you now know to what you saw in the beginning.
David Siegel is the wealthy owner of Westgate Resorts, a timeshare company in Florida. His wife Jackie Siegel - former winner of Mrs. Florida in 1993 - is thirty years his junior. They live in a luxurious home with their 8 children, servants and many pets. In 2004, Jackie and David began constructing a new home for their family: a luxurious residence inspired by the Palace of Versailles in France. It was set to be one of the largest single-family detached homes in the United States, until…
What a roller coaster of a documentary this is. As the movie begins, you look at the Siegels with disdain. She gave birth to seven children (the 8th they inherited from her cousin, who passed away)? He’s married to a former Mrs. Florida winner? They’ve begun construction on a new home because the one they currently own “isn’t big enough”? What is the matter with these people? This is likely the attitude with which Greenfield approached the family but she didn’t let on, possibly because she - like us - was taken by Jackie’s very human story. When you get past the extravagance and gaudiness that’s on the surface, the life the Siegels lead seems idyllic, even inspiring - and not just because of their enormous wealth.
But then, things go sour for them. You can't help but smirk as just about everything goes wrong. It’s this continuous escalation of lunacy. Maybe your first impression wasn’t so off after all. We know Jackie is an intelligent woman but somehow, her husband's money has atrophied her brain. She says these things, she does these things that make you slap your forehead in frustration. How could anyone not see what’s going on here? As David’s enterprise sinks, you keep wondering what miracle will pull them out of this downward spiral they’ve found themselves in. The crazy thing is that this tumultuous period you're witnessing makes you see just how much the couple have in common and what makes them a perfect pair. If you palette-swapped the luxurious backgrounds of their home for a run-down apartment and did a quick find-replace with key words in their dialogue, you’d see these super-rich are no different from yourself. Maybe that’s why they seem so human. You get to see them warts and all and understand that deep down, no one is truly capable of surviving under extreme poverty or extreme wealth without becoming a little mentally compromised.
The second The Queen of Versailles wraps up, you’ll begin researching what came next. It's like a bad soap opera with all sorts of loony turns and garish characters. You know it’s a little unhealthy for you to stay invested but you don’t care. It's not that you want to know what happened next, it's that's you NEED to know. It’s too wild to simply watch it once and then move on. (On Blu-ray, March 19, 2020)

Bonjour! (I have never opened an article with this greeting before, but it’s somewhat “on brand” so I will just apologize for any cringe that might have happened there.) Anyhow, you’ve probably heard the news about KAMIJO’s upcoming European tour “The Anthem” that’s taking place in June of this year, right? (If not, we’ve already made a post with tour dates and ticket information here.) You might know KAMIJO as the vocalist of Versailles (and Lareine and New Sodmy before that) and a solo musician in the 耽美系 (Tanbi Kei) subgenre of ヴィジュアル系 (Visual Kei), but did you know that there is actually a whole story behind KAMIJO’s solo works? KAMIJO started his solo career in 2013 with the release of the single “Louis 〜艶血のラヴィアンローズ〜” (Louis ~Tsuyachi no Ravian Roozu~), but the 2014 EP “Symphony of The Vampire”, the 2018 album “Sang” and the 2022 album “OSCAR” are all connected to one another, telling a story that is still unfolding to this very day. With the European tour on the horizon we figured it would be a good time to bring these releases to the front once more, and we’ve decided to do this with a three-part series that we’ve named “Behind the Mask” (yes, we are aware this is also the name of one of KAMIJO’s singles that came out in 2021). Today we’ll start with part one, which is “Symphony of The Vampire”. An EP that exists out of 7 movements, namely “Presto”, “Sacrifice of Allegro”, “Royal Tercet”, “Dying-Table”, “Sonata”, “満月のアダージョ” (Mangetsu no Adaajo) and “Throne”. Are you ready? Then let’s go! Mini-Reviews: The Doom of Odin, The Ball at Versailles On the Plus Side, The Second Duke's a Charm, and Public Anchovy #1
I very rarely do mini reviews. My main reason is because I love doing in depth reviews. But, in this case, I got very behind with my reviews. I had planned on being caught up by Christmas but then everyone in my family (including myself) got the flu. I was in bed for four days and couldn’t function until yesterday. So, being behind a couple of reviews snowballed into six. But, I am feeling better…

Jeanne du Barry: A review
I watched it, so you don’t have to!
There was a preview screening of Jeanne du Barry that coincided with a presentation on 18th century fashion and hygiene, so I figured that would make for a pleasant Sunday. The lecture by Marta Veil was splendid.
The movie was… not.
Tumblr media
I wasn't expecting greatness, really, but I also wasn't expecting it to fail in quite so many ways. Shall we count them?
First, it falls flat as a piece of cinema. The ponderous shots just scream second-year-film-student-auteur. The narration, usually a gimmick, is critical because the directorial vision seems to have been “tell, don’t show”. It’s all glamour with no heart, a faux-profound fashion parade that fails to let its consequential story beats resonate on any emotional or narrative level. Despite being told about the constant danger than Jeanne is in, we never feel it. Despite witnessing her tragedies, we don't empathise.
The lead actor-director gives du Barry none of the wit, charm or depth you would expect of the subject of a biography, and most characters are either outrageous caricatures (the evil, Alice in Wonderlandian step-daughters, complete with heart-shaped perms) or have the nuance and magnetism of an untoasted slice of white bread (the Dauphin, a key side character, shows not a single discernible character trait besides “aloof”).
Second, it fails as a biography. Maïwenn, the woman responsible for this mess, has apparently been trying to bring this story to life for over a decade - and then manages to give us nothing more than the blow-for-blow you can get from the du Barry Wikipedia article - dryness and all.
(It’s also exceedingly clear that Maïwenn got more than a little 'inspired’ by Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, and ironically - given their historical rivalry and the way Coppola's Antoinette was lifted wholesale from her film - the Dauphine outshines du Barry completely here.)
Despite being a biography, the movie devotes very little attention to Jeanne’s coming of age - and almost no time (literally, a 30-second narration) to the 12+ years of her life after Louis’ death, which include such dramatic things as her being betrayed by her servants, tried and executed in the wake of the French Revolution. Very little of her internal world is explored - so we don’t really understand what drives her, and even when she expresses her goals it comes across as insincere.
The bulk of the movie focuses on Jeanne’s time as Louis XV’s lover. That’s understandable, I guess - people want the sexy, sparkly intrigues, not the convent drudgery - but the movie doesn’t do any work to embrace the politics and scandal surrounding her on more than the meanest surface level. I mean - "this is Versailles!" (A line that’s cribbed verbatim from Coppola.) Where are the machinations, the manoeuvres? The only meaningful drama we get is domestic. Louis’ daughters don’t like his mistress. They’re mean to her. And… that’s it.
Most egregiously, the movie makes the unrecoverable error of losing grasp of its own point of view. We ostensibly follow Jeanne for most of the movie, in what is made out to be a limited first-person perspective. But when she’s banished from Versailles, we get to witness the unfolding events without her. After all, the death of Louis XV is surely more interesting than some woman bundled off to a convent (wait— who is this movie about…?) and so we stay with him - and miss the opportunity to follow Jeanne and empathise with her isolation, fear and grief.
If the goal of the movie was to humanise and rehabilitate du Barry, then maybe she shouldn’t have been made so vapid, boring and lacking in agency that her own biography lost interest in her.
Third, it fails as a historical piece. Not entirely - some of the men’s fashions are sumptuous and on point, Marie Antoinette is chef’s-kiss, and Versailles looks splendid on screen - but that makes the rest worse, somehow.
Again, we get Coppola plagiarism, in the form of Louis’ morning dressing routine (with the same comical play on the endless steps and bored attendants), as well as in many of du Barry’s fish-out-of-water moments.
But the movie forgets its own rules and context. For example, we’re told that “no one except the Dauphin is allowed to turn their back on the king” - a rule that’s respected until about midway in the movie, at which point, its plot purpose exhaused, it's forgotten entirely. Jeanne is also surprisingly enlightened about racial equality, showcased in painful scenes with Zamor, her black… servant? slave? Although it’s not really clarified on screen, the former is heavily implied, which would be gross revisionism.
Even Louis is treated with a strange sort of familiarity, left to mill around with his guests in the hall of mirrors or stroll the gardens with his hair undone.
As for the clothing… I can’t bear to deep-dive into the entirety of the mess, but here are a few examples of just how lazy the styling is.
Now, when he’s done up in his finery, Louis XV actually looks grand - and even (what a rarity) has very decent period men’s make-up. But then it’s clowns all the way down. Take this shot.
Tumblr media
Just behind him is his daughter, sporting a top-of-the-pops 1980s crimped blowout, and beside her is the Dauphin of France - though you could be mistaken for thinking he’s some fella getting to pose for a romance novel cover in the world's most ill-fitting suit. (I don’t recall this man tying his hair up one single time for the duration of the movie.)
Some of the critique is a little nitpicky, yes - for example, du Barry wears this outfit to be formally presented to the king:
Tumblr media
The big hair and ostrich feathers are a decade too early (stop trying to be Marie Antoinette: The Unauthorised Prequel already), the makeup is mid 2000s, and the necklace... the less said about it, the better. But at least an attempt was made!
But this?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this???
Tumblr media
0.5 out of 5 stars. It would have been zero on account of all the plagiarism, but a half-star is given for the cameo of Elizabeth Vigée Le Brun.

Okay, I caved and downloaded Romance Club😭😭 Does anyone have any good story recommendations? I'm still gonna be on Choices and post Choices content (and finish off the books on my reading list). I just feel like I need to stop relying on one storytelling app
Ugh, this is such a weird feeling! It reminds me of when I switched from Episode to Choices and I had to acclimate to the better quality of stories imao. I just wanna ✨expose myself✨ to more interactive apps and since Storyscape or wtvr doesn't exist anymore this is the closest I can get

COMPLETED
Kali: Call of Darkness: 9/10; love the MC, the characters, the story progression, the Dozen lore, replayability, etc. but gets a point off for its problematic depiction of Indian culture and Hinduism) tbh it deserves an extra point or two off because I despise the way Remy clearly wrote from a Eurocentric perspective, but this is also the first RC book I read after the slew of mid Choices books so I got attached unfortunately
Theodora: 9.6/10; I got the ending where I was only able to save my soul and it made me sad 😭 the story was well written but there were parts where I was just a lil bored. At least, that’s how I felt initially before I became obsessed with the book. It's objectively amazing etc. but I feel kinda robbed from screentime with the OG characters if that makes sense? Either way the writer did a great job writing them into the plot in later seasons and the MC is so amazing I love her <3 it’s not easy to write the progression of multiple relationships already but to have a different set of likable LIs every season is incredible!
Arcanum: 9.8/10; THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD omg I love how the plot came full circle and the MC was interesting and well-written (her character design was also top tier). It's such a unique concept for a book I love it. I feel like S3 could have gone by a lil quicker (along with a couple of other nitpicky things) but that could just be because S2 was so full of action
Heaven's Secret: 9.9/10; I just started its sequel, but I was pleasantly surprised at how engaging this book was! I like the gradual progression from being a new student to slowly learning the truth behind your death and about the academy. The final battle scene was super cool, and I feel like everything had a logical explanation (ex. Shepha only having power over light). I also like the different pathways of being an Angel, Demon, or Harmony Bearer (which I was!) it was really fun and seems like a replayable book <3
Vying for Versailles: [review pending, check later]
Sins of London: [review pending, check later]
Heaven's Secret 2: [review pending, check later]
